Starting point is 00:00:33 Investor's Edge with Gary Coltbaum. Straight talk about you and your money. Now from the BizTalk Studios, here is Gary Cultbaum. And welcome once again to Investors Edge. I'm Gary Coltbaum, your host. A thanks of being with us today. Glad you here, ladies and gentlemen, happy that you are listening. It is April 5th, 2024.
Starting point is 00:00:56 It's Friday. Oh, yeah, it's Friday. Good. And as always, a lot to cover. For starters, in case you don't know, there was an earthquake outside of New York City in Jersey. My sons text me, we just had an earthquake. I'm like, get out of here. New York City.
Starting point is 00:01:14 They had an earthquake. Four point something, which is kind of like a tiptoe through the tulips compared to others, but you never know, especially when you have all those buildings and all those people, all concentrated, but so far so good. And not hearing anything. I was in Japan on the 50th floor of a hotel when an earthquake hit. That did not feel good. And when I lived in San Diego, we had a good one also.
Starting point is 00:01:44 Did not feel good. And aftershocks. That was today. Ladies and gentlemen, I want to start the show today with our favorite two words. Let me make it three. Protect your capital. I can't tell you how many times throughout the years we would be contacted by people with their stories
Starting point is 00:02:19 because of things we say on this show mainly protect your capital in the year 2001 I was in office in downtown Orlando we were in the midst of one of the most brutal bare markets in history and a woman came in to meet with me, sat down at the table and you can tell she was really upset and really nervous. She had turned 750,000 into 70,000 in all those crazy stocks back then. And she told me her husband did not know.
Starting point is 00:03:10 and she was I think there was hope and prayer I can turn her 70 back into 700 and some odd thousand and when I told her I couldn't you're asking for miracles and we were still in the midst of the bare market I thought she wanted to jump out the window and you know we asked what happened
Starting point is 00:03:33 and the usual bought crap and then praise that it would work and average down into crap that was being touted left and right and shared destruction.
Starting point is 00:03:58 We know some people that wealthy put a couple of hundred grand into an NFT that's worth a dollar. That's not going to affect them. Well, it affects your psyche, but if you're worth, worth 10 million, you lose 200 grand, no big deal. There are moments in time with markets and your
Starting point is 00:04:22 capital that we feel like we have to open our mouths a little bit louder. And we did it recently. And again, we have to give the disclaimer. This is not political statement when we talk about Trump's merger that they just did, because that's what we're going to talk about here. And the reason we're going to talk about this today is because we know the emotion of the fans of Trump. We have friends that live and die by the man. We have people that hate his guts that we know. That won't go near anything he touches. But what we want to talk about right now is to the people that really love.
Starting point is 00:05:16 the guy and how we're getting contacted from people that have listened to this show while we said days ago and they ignored what we said because of emotion and not logic and we never ask numbers but let me just state for the record it's more than a few our main thrust of what we want to say is when you are putting your money to work you have got to take all emotion out of it fan dumb out of it and always have an escape hatch what are you going to do if things go awry
Starting point is 00:06:29 and this doesn't matter whether it's Trump stock or GameStop I got a good one for you or Walgreens Wallgreens stock has gone from 97 to 19. Let me get closer.
Starting point is 00:06:51 86 to 19 since 2018. Walgreens. So this is the place where you go to get your drugs, sometimes food, sometimes beverage. Ridiculous prices, by the way. Never buy dog food there. And it's kind of like on every quarter.
Starting point is 00:07:17 How is it possible it can go from 86 to 19. Well, the question is, if you bought it at 86, what was your escape hatch? What was the point in time and what was the place that you got out? Without any disaster happening.
Starting point is 00:07:47 This is what we want to talk about here today. with the accent on the stupid. And that is buying into things that make absolutely no sense that are staring you straight in the face, that you are paying $10 for a $1 bill, and in some cases $10 for no dollars. And that would be no sales companies. So we received some thank yous.
Starting point is 00:08:27 We stopped one of our peeps from buying it two days in a row. And now the stock is down 50% in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 trading days. And you had our warning. But our warning was not, hey, in 7 trading days, the stock's going to be down 50%. Our warning was, you know, this thing can go to 200 first. Why not give it a $50 billion valuation?
Starting point is 00:09:10 Because you really never do know how far froth is going to go. We've seen in past years some real insane moves and things that made absolutely no sense. I remember Bed Bath and Beyond was on the verge of bankruptcy.
Starting point is 00:09:30 Everybody knew it, and they short-squeased the stock up one or two times beforehand, and of course the stock is gone now. AMC theaters, how many times do we warn you about that? That has gone from $393 to $3.
Starting point is 00:09:49 And they did some splits, I think, a reverse split somewhere. Protect your capital. And sometimes it's just darn easy. But people did get caught up. And I can't argue the point. I watch the audience when Trump talks. They are laser-focused on the man.
Starting point is 00:10:22 They are enamored with the man. The sun rises and sets with the man. And now he's got the Trump media stock. well, but something happened on the way. And that's something I didn't even know. I did not even know the numbers. And when I finally found the numbers, I was like, what?
Starting point is 00:10:58 Huh? Is this real? That's what I had to ask. And I checked three different ways to make sure the numbers were right. Up next. The protection of capital. The wild market. That's up next.

Starting point is 00:12:40 the podcast where I sit down with pharmacists to answer the health questions you didn't even know you could ask at the pharmacy counter. In this episode, we are diving into gut health with CVS pharmacist Victoria Motola, who explains why so many of us
Starting point is 00:12:55 live with stomach issues we should not accept as normal. A lot of what I see is just like chronic bloating, chronic stomach aches. Like I get a stomachache every time that I eat. And it just becomes like a lifestyle where, oh, yeah, you know, I just have a stomachache every day. Or I'm constantly feeling like gassy. And all of those things are not something that generally, if you have a healthy gut,
Starting point is 00:13:19 you should be living with. So that's when we deep dive. We deep dive into your medication. We deep dive into your OTC medication. And then at that point, we can probably identify something that we can change. Hear the full conversation, plus some fascinating facts about how gut health affects so much more than just your stomach on Beyond the Script, a podcast from CVS Pharmacy and IHeartRadio. Listen now wherever you get your podcasts. When energy dips, your reviving routine deserves more than a quick fix.

Funds could be available as soon as tomorrow. Depending on certain loan attributes, your business loan may be issued by OnDec or Celtic Bank.
Starting point is 00:14:43 OnDec does not lend in North Dakota, all loans an amount subject to lender approval. It's time to switch on the integrator units and get the brain cells working. You're listening to. Hey, this promises to be fun. Investors Edge. The last bastion of quality programs.
Starting point is 00:15:01 With Gary Coltbaum. It doesn't get better than this. So, here is what I found out and conveyed to you on the stock. 136 million shares outstanding. When I found out about it, the numbers, that day the stock hit a highest 79 and closed at 58. but the next day gaps up to 72 and you take $72 just will take the $72 times 136 and you get $9.7 billion market cap with less than $4 million in sales and a loss of $50 million. I don't care what the company does who's involved what they sell.
Starting point is 00:16:13 Well, in bull markets, you can get some Teflon. In bare markets, this thing is going to single digits. And as we said to you, maybe it goes to 200 first. I mean, you never know. Well, it's gone from that high of eight trading days ago, right around 80. It's 40. But there's a problem still. Even at 40 has a $5.5 billion market cap with less than $4 million in sales.
Starting point is 00:16:48 and loss of $50 million. And by the way, I hurried, I didn't read it, but I know it's there. They put out a note that they can very easily go bankrupt because they're leaking cash. Now, they just raised a bunch of cash with this merger, but how long can this go for? I don't know if you also know this.
Starting point is 00:17:10 Trump is suing the founders. The two founders are claiming that something happened with how much stock and Trump did this and they did that and they're, I guess they're suing each other, but that doesn't matter. Well, it does matter, but my point is, after I mentioned these numbers to people, they still went and bought it. One of my peeps, after mentioning the numbers, still came back and wanted to buy it the next day, would have bought it at 72.
Starting point is 00:17:44 It's now 40. and even at 40, let me repeat, it's got a $5.5 billion market cap. And the other problem is I don't know if they're going to be able to grow this business. And let me stop again. This is not political, but it's one of those extreme examples combined with the emotion of, I love the guy, and I have to be a part of it, and then all of a sudden you're squashed. and that's where we come out and say protection of capital
Starting point is 00:18:22 do you know in normal circumstance the stock's worth not even a buck what well if you do less than four million in revenues and lose 50 million dollars and are leaking millions
Starting point is 00:18:42 and you have 136 million shares outstanding at a buck It's a $136 million market cap. That's how crazy this one is. And trust me, they're worse. There are things with absolutely no sales. But I wanted to bring this one up because it has the component also. We love the man.
Starting point is 00:19:14 We're getting a lot of that. The people that are contacting me, my emotions. There are people out there that think he is the savior. And I'm not going to argue that point. That's not we're here to do. We're here for you going forward. Get a grip, get a hold of yourself. And when it's too good to be true, it probably is.
Starting point is 00:19:45 And then most importantly, in this day and age, in this day and age, when I was a kid, information, the Encyclopedia Britannica I had, and it was a year old. That's what I had for information. That's it. If I had to look up Abraham Lincoln, I'd probably find a page on him. Now go look up Abraham Lincoln. You can spend a month.
Starting point is 00:20:19 So all the information is at hand at this juncture and there is no excuse to not do some legwork on everything. And sometimes you just have to put the pen to the paper and just add. Multiply, divide, and get your head in gear.
Starting point is 00:20:48 Why? Because if somebody decided to buy this at 80, seven trading days ago, they're down 50% on their money and all they had to do was, oh, okay, not to mention the other part of the equation, the dude's going to need to do some selling. The problem is he's got a six-month lock-up unless the board changes the rules, but the problem is the board is too closely held to Trump, and I can promise you the lawsuits up the wazoo, if they change the lockup, I can't begin to tell you how many there would be.
Starting point is 00:21:31 I think another Trump is on the board. So again, I think a third time to mention we're not browbeating Trump. We're browbeating a stock and its valuation and your emotions. And there's going to be many more going forward. Oh man, look what happened with just Reddit. Reddit. What did I say? What price did that come out at?
Starting point is 00:22:08 Hit a higher 75. It's 47. 28 on 75, added up. 35%, some like that. It's a lot of cake lost that you did not have to lose. We will keep coming at you whenever we see these extremes. Don't send me nasty emails that I'm picking on Trump. I'm not.
Starting point is 00:22:39 We've done it with Rivian, GameStop, Beyond Meat, AMC, Robin Hood, even though that's a stronger stock right now, the marijuana stocks, even though the marijuana stocks are in a bullish phase now, we're talking about when they drop 90%, and so on and so forth. And there'll be more, many more, because they're always come around. And all we ask you to do is some legwork. be the CSI of your money. There are enough great investing opportunities than having to do that.
Starting point is 00:23:31 Look at gold just recently, 10% in a month. Up next, today's markets, explanations, whatever else, I'm Gary. This is the one only investors' edge. Hi, I'm Dr. Jay Goodman, host of Beyond the script, the podcast where I sit down with pharmacists to answer the health questions you didn't even know you could ask at the pharmacy counter. Starting point is 00:26:14 he's a cinderella boy with gary colbomb comes highly recommended you're going to feel better if you talk to And welcome once again to Investors Edge. So, hey yo, I'm flying up to New York. My father's still in the hospital, doing much better, and we've really found out just too much pills, not enough water. The big issue, though, is he's at the point now where, how do I put this? Boy, I'm really telling you my life here.
Starting point is 00:26:53 we worry about his strength overall. Getting up, laying down. It's a little bit at that moment, so we're doing some physical therapy right now at the hospital for the next few days to see. We have a now full-time living. So that's good news. But the doctor says,
Starting point is 00:27:18 how do you have a living for 24-7? How is that person going to be able to? Don't you need two people? And I'm like, what, am I going to get somebody from eight at night to eight in the morning? I don't know if there's anybody like that. So we're in the midst of trying to figure all that out. Life, baby. That's all I can tell you.
Starting point is 00:27:40 As you go through your life, different things. And, you know, it's funny when I mention I get a lot of emails from all of you, a ton of emails from all of you about, you. yeah yeah that's what we went yeah yeah and this is what we did and we really appreciate all your big time for you lending a helping hand with your thoughts prayers as well as your input because we're new with this but we are consulting professionals he's got a very good i mean just a hands-on doctor but at 92 and god bless my mom she's 90 and she's like the rock of gibraltar So I'm flying up there tonight.
Starting point is 00:28:26 And the only weekend I won't be there is next week. I'm going to the Masters next Saturday. Unless he really needs me, I'll be at the Masters one of my sons. On Saturday. Got to go to the Masters. Okay. Seguway. In case you don't know, in three hours, the NASDAQ dropped the juicy 500 points yesterday. In case you don't know, the Dow dropped 824 points yesterday.
Starting point is 00:28:54 In case you don't know, on radio yesterday, we said to you, potential warning shot, we went on to say we had one of these several weeks ago, but nothing came of it. This one, we'll see, may be different. Why? It's a weaker market at this point in time. We got back 307 today. and 199. So 307 of the 824 Dow points,
Starting point is 00:29:27 199 of the 500 NASDAF points. What does that mean? Well, I can tell you because we work our tail off. We went through 1,500 stocks already, and there are a few stocks that are showing extraordinary strength. Meta. Spotify. And that was an outcome of Spotify raising their prices.
Starting point is 00:29:53 Netflix is really starting to. I throw Amazon in there, but Netflix and Amazon are kind of lower beta-ish right now. But strength. But I will tell Dell, strength, Micron, which was actually down today, but strength. But after that, we think a ton of the market is just going to. in range bound is going range bound which is great for us why we love range bound what well what happened out of the five-month range bound nvita 70 80 90 percent range bound meta 50 percent and as we do our scans I'm drawing lines.
Starting point is 00:31:00 You know what the lines are? Range bound. We love it. And we hope it lasts a couple of months. Because the longer range bound and then a break to the upside, the better. But there are areas that are strong another.
Starting point is 00:31:22 Well, gold. We told you a break above 195 on GLD would be a multi-year all-time breakout. It's already $2.50. up another 360 today. That's 10% in a month for gold. Gold miners coming on better, silver. We told you about the emergence of oils.
Starting point is 00:31:42 Well, they have fully emerged now. And a bunch of what we call U-shaped, deep cup shapes, make them saucer shapes, meaning the right side came up without rest. and if you look at the new yearly high list, oil's gold. Add in copper, what do they have in common?
Starting point is 00:32:09 Commodities. Will that come home to hurt the markets eventually? Could be. Inflation. We'll see. Amazingly, a Fedhead this week said, we're expecting deflation.
Starting point is 00:32:28 What? Have you looked at oil prices you do, fiss? And then there's this building slash construction group. You wouldn't know it, but MLM, Martin Marietta materials, cement, W.W. Granger, Top Build, BLD, installation services. Builders first source, BLDR. A bunch of these things are just, wow. And I'm not trying to be a genius. I don't own any. But we're now finding out what's going on. Why are these things going?
Starting point is 00:33:27 Joe Biden. The amount of money he's forwarding for the construction of whatever is gargantuan. So that's an area. Whether it continues or not, we don't know, they're now starting to rest. They've gone up a few weeks now and we'll see if they decide to make another move.
Starting point is 00:33:48 That's an area. In the semis, March 8th still overhangs. The huge gargantuan reversal to the downside. Up today, but needs work. We hope they sit around for three months and then break out again. I'll take that. For us, trading ranges are our best friends.
Starting point is 00:34:18 Pullbacks are our best friends because you can isolate strength much easier. And if everything's range-bound, the first things to break out, usually lead. Now, next week we start earnings. I can tell you next Friday, BlackRock, J.P. Morgan, State Street Bank, Wells Fargo, City Group. That'll start earning season. And go for a few weeks.
Starting point is 00:34:52 Oh, we'll be watching closely. And we'll be ready. You know what the job's going to be, just like we tell you every earning season, up early, after the close. What's the numbers? What's the guidance? What's the reaction? Where the stocks are. And hopefully, catch some nice ones.
Starting point is 00:35:20 And typically, there'll be those ones that have the strongest earnings, the strongest sales growth, and great guidance going forward. forward, we'll be ready. Of course, we'll try to avoid the other side. Just like, have you seen Lulu Lemon? Talking about a cliff dive, do you know the stocks come from 480 to 356 in 12, 3,000, 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 on a worsening outlook. And I haven't had the time, but I'll get to a Lulu Lemon and see what's going on. Something's up. sometimes it's very easy we'll get a gist
Starting point is 00:36:12 inventory builds things not selling or do you know how much expensive their stuff is versus other places think about that high prices these days kids not easy
Starting point is 00:36:31 dollar tree it shouldn't be called dollar tree anymore it's dollar and a quarter tree and they're actually selling some things for seven bucks up next the new news. There's a bunch. I'm Gary. This is the one only investors, Ed. Hi, I'm Dr. Jake Goodman, host of Beyond the Script, the podcast where I sit down with

Starting point is 00:39:22 What are we waiting for? Well, what are you waiting for? One, two, ready, go. Action! In investors' edge. With Gary Culp, And well, once again, to Investors' Edge. In the news, and this is the stuff that pisses me off. Joe Biden unveils a $20 billion green energy spending spree.
Starting point is 00:40:00 Republicans are slamming it as a slush fund. Well, duh. So what is a $20 billion green energy spending spray? Let me explain. Their grants. You know what a grant is from government? You never have to pay it back. versus a loan.
Starting point is 00:40:20 The 20 billion, and just so you know, they've made $20 billion into a footnote. 20 billion of our tax dollars has turned into a footnote. Do you know who's going to get the $20 billion? They're saying it's going to be reserved for economically disadvantaged communities, rural, urban and tribal areas, as well as so-called energy communities,
Starting point is 00:40:50 including towns with shuttered coal mines. Yes, the government shut the coal mines, and then we're going to give you money. They say the grants will go towards investment and technical assistance for workforce development. That's the stuff that pisses me off. Do you know why?
Starting point is 00:41:21 These are going to go to cronies and they're going to take very big salaries and they're going to make a lot of coin. That's how they roll. And nothing's going to get done. That's all. There will never be a, an accountability for the dollars, which are ours,
Starting point is 00:41:50 because we are nothing to these people except votes when they need them. Joe Biden is turned our treasury into his own fiefdom in numbers beyond the beyond. And the media is given it a pass because the media sucks. In the news, a 99 cent store. 99 cents only stores they're closing 3701 locations rising theft and inflation well there you go how can you sell things for 99 cents when it's costing you a dollar five to buy the products now so they're going to shut dollar tree announced recently a thousand stores they are shutting
Starting point is 00:42:56 but the fed tells us inflation's in check just letting you know I've been never been in a 99-cent store. I've been in dollar trees. I've been in dollar generals. But what really got me is Biden's $20 billion, which is now a footnote. In the news, JetBlue, hmm, this is interesting. JetBlue is now going to do surge pricing. I don't know if you know this, but at Disney World, you pay up for certain dates. So JetBlue now is going to do luggage surge pricing. Now remember, I'm the one who said when they came out paying for luggage that the people would never go for it. I was a thousand percent wrong.
Starting point is 00:43:58 Well, now JetBlue is going to do during peak times during the year, instead of $35 for check bag, it will be $50. Hmm. Surge pricing. This time I'm not going to say it's not going to. to work since I was so wrong the first time. But surge pricing, huh, but there's no inflation. Everything's good. Everything's fine. Interest paid on a U.S. government debt is now $1.1 trillion in the last 12 months, and it's going to be $1.6 trillion for the fiscal year. You think about that. In the year 2000, our whole federal spending was $1.8 trillion, but they've gotten it so bad, these miscreants, 1.6 trillion of our tax dollars is going into the garbage chute of interest to pay on their debt that grows exponentially.
Starting point is 00:45:14 And as I've said to you, Joe Biden cannot have another four years. the problem is I don't think Trump's going to do anything about the debt or deficit either. He didn't the last time. He says he will this time. But I'm, as they say from Missouri, the show me state. What do they say about fool me once? Shame on you? Is that right?
Starting point is 00:45:50 Then fool me twice, shame on me? What I do know is we can't have Joe Biden for another four years. But that alternative. Joe Biden is bankrupting this country, destroying the fabric of this country, destroying democracy. The same thing they claim of Donald Trump. I'm saying about Joe Biden with gargantuan growth in size, scope, reach, and spending of government. We are nothing but a gargantuan freaking slush fund for this man covered up. by a pliant, corrupt, sleazy, slimy media that should be given him a colonoscopy
Starting point is 00:46:47 every day on what he is doing. I wish I had a different trajectory because I kick his rear end in an election. Oh, well. Hey, you all have a great weekend drive carefully. I'll be on a Delta flight tonight. And when you get home, do like I'm going to do this weekend, I'm going to see my dad, and I'm going to give him the biggest the hugs. And make sure you hug your children.
