Starting point is 00:00:00 I tell myself, it's not about comparing, but then I start wondering, what can they lift? Are they adding more weight to their barbell than I am? And suddenly, I'm not training. Then I realize, my journey is not theirs. I've earned every step. So I smile. My smile is the shape resilience takes to keep me moving. To put more smiles out into the world, Colgate has supported female athletes for over 50 years with the Colgate Women's Games, the nation's longest-running indoor track and field series for girls and women.
Starting point is 00:00:28 Colgate, your smile is your story. strength. Investor's Edge with Gary Coltbaum. Straight talk about you and your money. Now from the BizTalk Studios, here is Gary Cultbaum. And welcome once again to Investors Edge. I'm Gary Coltbaum, your host day. Thanks for being with us today.
Starting point is 00:00:47 Glad you're here, ladies and gentlemen, happy that you are listening. It is Wednesday, May 10th, 2003. Hope you're having a good day. I'm preparing myself for 10th. tonight as the Knicks our home against Miami down 3-1 in their NBA playoffs. I do know my peeps in Phoenix, I think had a rough night of it last night. That dude from Denver, what is he? Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:01:25 That guy is good. Anyway, hope you're having a good day. We have a lot to cover. You know, as I tell you, just so you know what I do in the morning, as I said, I have the apps on my phone. I go through the New York Times, the local Orlando Sentinel, and the Wall Street Journal. I go cover to cover. It doesn't mean I read everything. Some of them I'll just read the first paragraph.
Starting point is 00:01:53 And if I really have a big interest, I'll mail it to myself. So I see it later. Today was one of those days where I pretty much mailed to myself a bunch because all of it I'm going to cover on this show because there is so much going on out there, ladies and gentlemen. Some of the stuff is stunning. We will get into it in a little bit. But of course, you know this is a show about everything that affects you and your life and your job and your money and the markets and all that in between with the interlopers that continue to provide. headwinds against us. We'll get into that later. But man, oh man, as you know, is the greatest technicians on earth. We're very good at isolating weakness and strength. And sometimes, you know,
Starting point is 00:02:40 there's a, what was it, it's called the tale of two cities where you have a bunch of cars going south on I-95 and a bunch of cars going north on I-95. And that's what's going on right now. We'll get into that in a little bit also. But first, a big shout-out. from Tempe, Arizona. A big shout out to seven-year-old Hadley Bandera. I think I pronounce that right. 10-year-old Harper Bandera. 12-year-old Berkeley Bandera.
Starting point is 00:03:16 Buck, their father, drives them. They love the show. They love the music, too. So big shout-out to them. I expect, well, let me say this. there is this is to you three buckley harper and hadley i hear there's a daven busters in tempi arizona i hope i'm correct so on me on investors edge your dad's taking you to daven busters this weekend the pressure is on i'm hoping you're around this weekend on me send me the bill
Starting point is 00:03:56 have a great time, eat whatever you want to eat, play some games. You all three are cool. The Banderas. I think I'm pronouncing it. B-A-N-D-U-R-A-Bandera of Tempe, Arizona, 12-year-old Berkeley, 10-year-old Harper, 7-year-old Hadley, and a message from me to you three. In school, stay focused, study hard,
Starting point is 00:04:29 Find what you love in life as you move forward and become great at it. And watch what happens. Just a little words of advice from your handsome and buffed host. Mwa. Gary. Buck. Thanks for the kind words. Have a great time at Dave and Busters. By the way, I love Dave and Busters because when my kids were young,
Starting point is 00:05:01 I used to go Dave and Busters down in, it was like Lauderdale, somewhere around there. And it was so easy to win the big stuffed animals. I once brought home a stuffed animal. It was like, it was five feet. It was that big. It was five feet. It was a big gigantic bear. Anyway.
Starting point is 00:05:22 All right. So we start off the show with that. We'll do the morbid stuff later. So, ladies and gents, let me introduce myself. and our daily routine. We scan the markets. That's what we do. We assume, I want you to assume we have a good eye.
Starting point is 00:05:51 I want you to assume that we know what a good uptrend looks like and what a good downtrend looks like. I want you to assume we know what a bull market and a bear market looks like. And you should assume that because we've been doing this for a very long time and guiding you in real time and being right. What's been the latest being right? Two days before the banks crash, we said to you there was something wrong with the way the banks are trading, specifically the regional banks. We had no idea what was going to happen, but they were already starting to shiver. This second, this second, a lot of the money is going into software, big cap tech. Not all.
Starting point is 00:06:45 There's a few that are really Tesla lags badly. Adobe lags badly. That's the story. What happened recently is Z scale, ZS, announced revenue would be 4% higher, just 4% higher than expected. Boom. They rallied data and other software security names. On top of that, they've been buying up now. Other software types, not necessarily software security. Cloud, cloud-based. they're starting to buy that up Microsoft gaps up sits around moving out Nvidia keeps ascending Oracle breaks out sits moving out again Apple gaps up on pedestrian numbers notice that word every now and then I come out with a big word pedestrian yes that will mean not so great numbers and it's not pulling back. Chipotle selling a lot of burritos gaps up sitting for a week or two, maybe on the verge of moving out again. What do we talk to you about? Stair steps. Google moved
Starting point is 00:08:11 above range today Amazon looks like it's going to move above range. They're not big leaders, but they're big names. Good reaction to earnings reports. That's where the money's flowing. A little better day in the semis too today. though really not a lot of great except the nvita that said we have three screens and behind them are other screens but the three screens that are always up that we can see at all times one of the screens are all the blow-ups and i mean there's like 200 of them from 2,021 and a lot of them are the software names and other things And we're able to see if they stop going down, start emerging.
Starting point is 00:09:06 The other screen is what we call our stuff screen. What's the stuff screen? Financials. Economically sensitive stuff. Deer, Caterpillar, Parker, Hannafin, things like that. Insurance. Consumer staples. Commodities.
Starting point is 00:09:24 Transports of all kinds, including cruise lines, airlines, truckers, rails, hotels. All the retail, energy, managed care, defense stocks, autos, auto dealers, the payroll companies like ADP and paychecks. That screen looks like a horror show, in particular the financials, looks like a horror show. Wild today. All the money going into a couple of these tech areas. How long it lasts, how far it goes, don't know. but it is the definition a tale of two cities in this market the second if things change will let you know
Starting point is 00:10:22 but a big wow and i must tell you to give you an understanding of a big wow we're going to go through the intraday today to give you an understanding about how weak some areas are and how strong other areas are we're getting past a lot of the earnings now There's still plenty more to go, but really the big matzah balls are out already. There's a few more, but you know what I mean by the big guys. Up next, we'll describe. Thanks for being here. I'm Gary. This is the one only Investor's Edge.

Hi, I'm Dr. Jake Goodman, host of Beyond the Script, the podcast where I sit down with pharmacists to answer the health questions you didn't even know you could ask at the pharmacy counter. In this episode, we are diving into gut health with CVS pharmacist Victoria Motola, who explains why so many of us live with stomach issues we should not accept as normal.
Starting point is 00:12:57 A lot of what I see is just like chronic bloating, chronic stomach aches. Like I get a stomachache every time that I eat. And it just becomes like a lifestyle where, oh, yeah, you know, I just have a stomachache every day. Or I'm constantly feeling like gassy. And all of those things are not something that generally, if you have a healthy gut, you should be living with. So that's when we deep dive. We deep dive into your medication. We deep dive into your OTC medication.
Starting point is 00:13:23 And then at that point, we can probably identify something that we can change. Hear the full conversation, plus some fascinating facts about how gut health affects so much more than just your stomach on Beyond the Script, a podcast from CVS Pharmacy and IHeartRadio. Listen now wherever you get your podcasts. One sweet, melty bite of a Hershey's bar, and suddenly I'm right back sitting on the front porch with my grandmother on a slow summer afternoon. She doesn't say much, just breaks the bar in half and hands me a piece. I open my mouth to say whatever a nine-year-old wants to say.
Starting point is 00:14:00 And she replies with a low, listen. So we sat there, listening. That was the first time I learned that quiet can feel full. Hershey's. It's your happy place. It's time to switch on the integrator units and get the brain cells working. You're listening to.
Starting point is 00:14:23 Hey, this promises to be fun. Investors Edge. The last bastion of quality programming. With Gary Coltbaum. It doesn't get better than this. Okay. For example, there was a point today where the Dow was down 320 points. When the Dow was down 320 points, the NASDAQ, that was up 150 points, that was up 150.
Starting point is 00:14:57 50 early was flat. The NASDAQ was flat with the Dow down 320. So if the Dow rallies some, well the Dow only finished down 30, the NASDAQ up 126. NASDAQ 100146. Advanced decline's not that great. You know why. Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon, Google, you know what they mean. That. That was the story today. And as I looked to my left, as I said, it was much worse when the Dow was down 320, but still mostly beat red. And I can't begin to tell you the retail stocks
Starting point is 00:15:52 continue to act like the south end of a northbound jackass. Commodities, yuck. And financials. They were worse early, but they can't find the life. And there were plenty of blow-ups, though, some good moves, and we're going to highlight a couple of names for you, knowing that we are not advocating buying, selling, shorting, recovering,
Starting point is 00:16:26 but just noting the strength on their earnings reports. So definitively, money coming out of one into the other. And this is not coming out of the one. It's been going on. What have we been telling you to avoid? That's right. Retail energy. Most transport types, commodities.
Starting point is 00:16:56 Financials. Economically sensitive insurance. Few other things. Defense. Defense stocks are acting like there's no war. I don't know what's going on there. Usually when something's going on with a war and stuff, defense stocks, yeah. I'm wondering whether it has to do with, you know, the fight over the big con game of the debt ceiling.
Starting point is 00:17:22 And we'll get to that in a little bit. We'll see. So today's market wrap brought to by Investment-Dashmodels.com. That's Jim Morbock, one of the great market timers. No gray areas with the man you're either in or out of the market. It's proprietary indicators. Go check it out. Investment-dash-models.com. Dow down 30, NASDAQ up 126.
Starting point is 00:17:41 Dow down 30, NASDAQ 100 up 146. but amazingly with the NASDAQ strong, another day when new yearly lows swap new yearly highs. And there were more new yearly lows on the New York than New Yearly highs also. 10-year yield tanked again, 3.339, 3.439, came out with a Wuchamadugi, an inflation number that looked still high,
Starting point is 00:18:16 but the market kind of took it the other way early. Just so you know, the Dow, I think up, was up i want to make sure i get this right the dow on the open today 33 772 was actually up to 10 and then at the lows was down 320 just like i said finished down 30 but the story today was the nasdaq and the nasdaq 100 we don't mind that one bit and again remember 2021 topped out all these software names? Well, most of them are still down 50, 60, 70 percent from the highs of 21, but they're at new yearly highs right now and definitely getting what we consider to be institutional defense. That's it. That's the story. I don't even know if I need to go further.
Starting point is 00:19:17 Gold pulled back today, but it was much worse early. The housing stocks, which have been kind of the strongest area were down early, finished up, mixed, a few were down. But really, the whole story is what we just explained to you. And then they're the earnings. When you got a chance, you know this drink calorie burning fitness drinks. I don't know how that works, but Celsius. Symbol C-E-L-H was up almost 20% today on six times average volume, finished up 21 was as high as 27 and finished at a new yearly high and I'm going to guess that's a new all-time high yes it is I would just put it on your screen by the way little did I know stock was five bucks in 2020 and their revenue is you ready for some revenue last eight quarters 65 million 95 million
Starting point is 00:20:24 104 million, 133 million, 154 million, 188 million, then 178 million. So that was flat, 260 million the last quarter. So obviously they're selling more and getting into, I see them in the public supermarkets where I shop. I've never tried them. And I don't know this means calorie burning fitness beverage. How do you drink a beverage and it burns calories? I'm going to have to look that one up. I may have missed that memo.
Starting point is 00:20:59 You drink a beverage and you burn calories? I know there's these pills that they say burns fat easier. I'm going to look it up. Celsius. I don't know how they pronounce it. Celsius. I heard somebody say Celsius. Celsius.
Starting point is 00:21:20 I got to mention something off the beaten path, though. I think I'm smart. they have the Jeopardy Masters Tournament this week How do these people get so knowledgeable? Do they read 24 hours a day? You know, when they have regular Jeopardy, I kick butt. This master stuff, I mean, they're doing like the Renaissance age. I mean, from 1850 and 1472 and this, that, and the other thing.
Starting point is 00:21:53 You know what I got right a lot? They did one with sports. Another one is music. It's about all I got right. Everything else I never even heard of. I think it's on ABC at 8 o'clock this whole week. You wouldn't believe how smart these people are. Gosh, I hate them.
Starting point is 00:22:12 And I consider myself very smart. I just had to mention that. It was sticking in my craw. I was looking at my wife and she looks at me because when we watch Jeopardy, she sees me answering a lot of questions on regular. The regular Jeopardy shows. but I guess they supersized the questions for the masters. And all I can't think, how do they know this stuff?
Starting point is 00:22:38 It's almost like they ask, what time did King Tut go to the bathroom on this date in this year? That's a little sarcasm, but it's almost like that. Up next, what else I got in store? This is the one only investors end. I'm Dr. Jake Goodman, host of Beyond the Script, the podcast where I sit down with pharmacists to answer the health questions you didn't even know you could ask at the pharmacy counter. And all of those things are not something that generally, if you have a healthy gut, you should be living with. So that's when we deep dive. We deep dive into your medication. We deep dive into your OTC medication.

Starting point is 00:25:36 with my grandmother on a slow summer afternoon. She doesn't say much, just breaks the bar in half and hands me a piece. I open my mouth to say whatever a nine-year-old wants to say. And she replies with a low... Shh. Listen. So we sat there, listening. That was the first time I learned that quiet can feel full.
Starting point is 00:25:58 Hershey's, it's your happy place. We're listening to. America is talking. Investors Edge. He's got to be pleased with that. The crowd is just on his feet here. He's a Cinderella boy. With Gary Colbomb.
Starting point is 00:26:16 It comes highly recommended. You're going to feel better if you talk to him. Okay. Are you ready? In the news. And I have to tell you, it goes under the headache. You never know. I'll just read it to you.
Starting point is 00:26:51 Sales figures for Bud Light are now dropping in every region in the country by some pretty big numbers. 25%. Rocky Mountains, 29%, the most. South Atlantic, West North Central, East South Central, all dropping 25%. There is a map. Wow. You know what it tells you? People really care about how something's presented.
Starting point is 00:27:33 Take away all the stuff about who's tolerant or not tolerant. I'm just talking business here. People are very, very in-tuned to how their favorite so-and-so is percentage to them. These are gargantuan numbers. By the way, Bud today broke the 50-day moving average to the downside. In the news, George Santos. Interesting, he was charged today, 11 counts of this, that, and the other thing.
Starting point is 00:28:17 My once-beloved party, which I'm no longer a part of, only in names because I can vote in the primary, the Republican Party. Why are they being quiet? Why aren't they kicking his boneheads, you know what, out? The guy's a crook, the guy's a fraud. This is even before this. Anyway, he stood up there and started answering questions. He looked like a moron.
Starting point is 00:28:44 He sounded like a moron. Anyway, in the news, boy, George Santos. Unbelievable. In the news, Miami's love affair with crypto is souring. Who told you that? That was me. So in case you don't know, they came out with a Miami coin. It's down like 98%.
Starting point is 00:29:06 Try even selling it. It's no longer the FTX arena. It's another name. But now they, I guess they hosted another one of these confabs and 1,500 less people showed up and they're not taking salaries in Bitcoin anymore. By the way, Bitcoin's rally a little bit off the lows. Miami officials and business leaders
Starting point is 00:29:27 have soured on the crypto, no longer counting, is the main driver in the city's quest to become a world business and financial center, blah, blah, blah, told you. Just so you know, we emailed the mayor's office in the midst of the frenzy. We did not hear back. I introduced myself and calmly and nicely said, you do know you are promoting bubbles that will pop. I never heard back.
Starting point is 00:29:55 I don't even know if they even read it. and Miami is a great place so this is not a put down in Miami except the drivers anyway what can I tell you interesting enough crypto companies are now testing the public markets
Starting point is 00:30:14 is this sick or what some crypto companies are exploring an option that appeared off the table just six months ago Bitcoin mining company Bit Deer DER listed on the NASDAQ last month if they're merging with a special purpose acquisition company or SPAC.
Starting point is 00:30:31 Isn't that great? In case you don't know, this was a SPAC at $10,000 and $3.4.4. It actually went up on the news. It's at $6 now. Kids, be smart. It's a bubble. It's all it is. Nothing more, nothing less.
Starting point is 00:31:00 And the fact that after the SPAC crash, that there's still not an even, even know what to tell you. I don't even know what to tell you. In the news, Oakland teachers are striking, not just for pay. They want climate justice. Really? That'll help your students who are failing, who can't read in eighth grade. The district offered a record raise increasing salaries 22 percent not good enough. I don't even know what to say. It's no longer schools anymore with these unions. Their way of the highway, forget about teaching students. Rivian, one of our great calls at 170 telling you it's worth 20 bucks and it's 14. They're lost narrows, but they're facing a cash crunch. It's good to know the loss narrowed. It was up in the aftermarket today. Hit a high,
Starting point is 00:32:19 of amazingly 1574, closed at 14. Just so you know, their revenues have skyrocketed. But if you lose a crap load of money on every car you sell, what's so good about that? They only lost a billion dollars for the quarter. They did 661 million of sales, lost a billion dollars on those sales. I'm not making that up. Stunning. In the news, did you? Did you? You know, You know, and I guess some things passed me by. In certain areas, there were eviction. You could not evict people if you were a landlord because of COVID. Do you know in California a bunch of cities are still enforcing those laws?
Starting point is 00:33:10 Imagine if you are a landlord. You can't evict somebody who refuses to pay you rent. You go broke as the landlord. Think about that. The city is crushing the owners. the landlords what is the matter with some of these governments in the news
Starting point is 00:33:39 I kind of had an idea I just want to let you all know in the Senate which is 5149 now for the Democrats which should have never been that except Donald Trump put up a bunch of scummy candidates in the next election
Starting point is 00:33:56 there are 34 Senate seats up only 11 Republican seats are up for election. 23 for Democrats. If the Republicans were smart, they better get cracking. There's some seats for the taken. But if you keep putting up a bunch of buzzards, it ain't going to happen. Get some people that can walk to walk, talk to talk, and are logical. Defend the police. Defend the people. Put the criminals behind bars. Balance the budgets. logic. And for God's sake, enough with the BS on the election. That's your news today, unless I can find something else. But the big one, George Santos, unbelievable. And we covered
Starting point is 00:35:02 Trump and his finding liable on sexual assault and whatever else. In case you did not know, ex-president Trump is on CNN tonight. I think that he's suing CNN, but he's on CNN tonight doing in a town hall. I may have to watch. Just letting you know. I don't usually advertise CNN, but I may have to watch that. And that is your ever popular over-the-top news of the day. Brought to you by my good friends from Tempe, Arizona, the Bandura family. Headed by Berkeley at 12 years old, Harper at 10 years old, and Hadley at 7 years old, that are gone to Dave and Busters this weekend in care of the Colbaum family. You hear that buck, and there you go.
Starting point is 00:36:13 Otherwise, back on point, NASDAQ, NASDAQ 100 in tech, while we're told it's no good. Up next, this, that, and the other thing, and whatever else. This is the one only investor's edge. Hi, I'm Dr. Jake Goodman, host of Beyond the script, the podcast where I sit down with pharmacists to answer the health questions you didn't even know you could ask at the pharmacy. counter. Starting point is 00:39:51 What are we waiting for? Well, what are you waiting for? One, two, ready, go. Action! So the question is why is the economically sensitive areas of the market continue to get blasted? We know why financials are.
Starting point is 00:40:27 But technology, I think a couple of things going on. Number one, some of these technology stocks, 70, 80, 90% drop and maybe that's it. Number two, lower rates. Number three, some of these companies have good growth rates. And eventually, remember what we've always taught you, growth rates will cut through. I don't care what markets do. If you grow your company like crazy numbers, you're going to cut through it. and coming out of bare markets or crashes, you grow your company in a huge way. You're going to win.
Starting point is 00:41:13 We've given you the example, our favorite example of LA gear. Out of the 87 crash, that stock was breaking out to yearly highs, all-time highs before the crash. And then the crash came, and it got everything. crushed everything the crash ended for a year or two the market just drifted listlessly LA gear went up 17 fold
Starting point is 00:41:51 why amazing growth of their business amazing growth of their business from nothing to a lot market recognized it and off she went
Starting point is 00:42:17 so we think with some of these names they've already gone through the worst of while still growing their business. No longer are they ridiculously overvalued. We think there's a component of that. Now keep in mind, not everything going to go with it. There's still plenty of them.
Starting point is 00:42:47 Probing the bare market lows. Plenty of them. But we're starting to see a few of them getting on their way. And as I was looking at them in the last couple of days, hey, this one's at a new yearly high. And then I break out the weekly going back five years. Oh, it's down 72% from 2021.
Starting point is 00:43:18 That's how bad it's got. But that's also maybe why we're seeing what we're seeing. So we have interest in them for the first time in a long while. And as you know, we called the tops on them in 21 and got the heck out of the way in time. We'll keep you abreast of this. Why? This is some important stuff.
Starting point is 00:43:53 This is real deal stuff. We don't know which. All we know is we're on it. I'm looking at LA gear right now. 1471% in 17 months coming out of the crash. Earnings growth just skyrocketing. Went from losing money to $2.25 earnings in two years. Sales of nothing to a lot.
Starting point is 00:44:35 So we're in scoping mode. We've got the microscope out right now because they're showing up on screens now. And they're showing relative strength. What you really should be doing right now is looking at the new yearly high list. And even though these things are way off their highs of 21, they're at the new yearly high list. And market loses memory of resistance after a year, at least a decent amount of it. Will this move last? Don't know.
Starting point is 00:45:11 We just know at the close today. NASDAQ taincy-weensy above the highs. And volume was good today. Same for the NASDAQ 100. While these other areas, my goodness, and we stay steadfast, did I just do the double positive, stay steadfast? We are steadfast on our thought process and going near the regional banks, even the midsize. We haven't bought a big bank either. They're under pressure too.
Starting point is 00:45:47 We think the business may be changing. And those who do not come up to snuff, going to be in trouble. Remember, these banks are paying two-tenths of 1% on your cash when people can get 5% on one year without any risk. Now, for those that don't know, that's what these banks are hoping. You think the banks are sending out notices to all the clients, oh, you have all this cash, we're only paying you two-tenths of a percent, here, he'll get this. Why would the banks do that? So I really think the business has changed. And again, Well, tough to predict, who's next? Is there somebody else going to be next?
Starting point is 00:46:40 And as we said, you can trade them, but you better trade them right. While Pack West has had a good move off the lows, it's down 20% from the highs of a day and a half ago already. And still down 50% from eight days ago. And still down 80% from 10 weeks ago. So I wouldn't touch them. and all those areas we said bearish on nothing changed hey tomorrow we'll be on with varney and company stewart varney on fox business network will be on the 11 o'clock hour don't miss me i'll be wearing a very nice tie and until tomorrow you have a great evening drive carefully
