I'm Gary Colbom, your host. A thanks for being with us today. Glad you're here, ladies and gentlemen, happy that you are listening. It is May 18, 2023.
Starting point is 00:00:56 And we're here to talk about everything that matters to you, your mind. money, your jobs, the economy, the markets, everything else in between. Serious talk with a little comedy injected. And we have some pointed comments, pointed things to say today, because we have certain mantras that has now come to fruition again. And we gave you the shout out on Monday. Little did we know how the week would progress, but we gave you the shout out on Monday. And we'll get to that in a minute.
Starting point is 00:01:42 But first, if you do not get this radio show in your city, we'll post it at garyk.com. We'll also post it on our Twitter feed. If you don't follow us on Twitter, go to Twitter, put our name in, or press the button at garyk.com. You can email me, just be nice. And based on just what we've told you this week, y'all should be nice.
Starting point is 00:02:08 But I must tell you, we're just going to start out with one thing. Then we're going to do a crap load of markets. and at the end we got some news of the day. As you know, in the morning, I read the whole Wall Street Journal, the whole New York Times, the whole local paper, and what I do is I send to myself the ones I have a real interest in and ones maybe I want to talk to you about that you may not know about. But the one thing that stood out, who on this earth in the last week came on to, to this show and said, Governor DeSantis had better be careful with Disney. Who was that?
Starting point is 00:02:57 That was moi. Who on here said ego is getting much of him? Why is he going after a company that has been a boon to the state of Florida, not just central Florida, to the tune of hundreds of thousands of jobs, billions of dollars of economic impact, the tentacles that Disney reaches, I think that's good, the right language, into all other avenues of airline travel, auto travel, rental cars, merchandise, restaurants, other theme parks, philanthropy. I can go on and on and on of the beneficial outcome of Disney. Yet, amazingly, he picks a gargantuan fight against Disney, and don't give me the woke crap. because I'm with you on the woke.
Starting point is 00:04:15 I don't like the woke. But it has to go so far before you piss off people. And I don't know if you know this. The governor threatened Disney. Threatened with new toll roads into Disney, which Disney wouldn't pay for. It would be the consumer. Higher taxes at the hotels.
Starting point is 00:04:46 The consumer would pay for. A threat from one of the staff about building a prison near Disney all kinds of weird crap against Disney and all I'm thinking to myself wait a minute here we've been hearing
Starting point is 00:05:07 for a long while Disney and the want to expand an expansion which means more economic impact more jobs more this more that more everything good for an economy we warned you
Starting point is 00:05:26 we knew it We knew something negative would come of it. Disney just dropped a $1 billion campus plan in an area called Lake Nona. One billion, a corporate campus that would have brought 2,000 high-paying jobs to Orlando, Florida. In 21, Disney paid $46.4 million. for 58 acres that had planned to turn into a complex for its creative team, imaginering, and other jobs. The average salary was going to be $120,000.
Starting point is 00:06:20 And because Disney says we have changing business conditions, and you know what that is. They're not moving forward with the campus. They went on to say, he still has hope the company's plans, get this, to invest $17 billion in Florida over the next 10 years. including the addition of around 13,000 jobs what stood happen. Stupid! Egotomaniac!
Starting point is 00:07:05 Fight in a losing battle! Because they went woke. And again, I don't like woke. I'm against woke. I've talked about it here. I think it's stupid. We've become this victimhood society. Everybody's a victim about everything.
Starting point is 00:07:23 You can't say something. You say the wrong way. Oh, you're this, that, and the other thing. I told you the story that I opened the door for a woman at Target, and she F-bombed me, and I thought she was going to hit me because I opened the door. So I get it. But you've got to measure everything you do, especially when you run a state. And it's the most, I don't know if you know this.
Starting point is 00:07:49 It is the most important corporation in the state of Florida. They're pretty much as Disney. I don't want to say everyone else, but most are beneath. So just letting you know, told you so. Mr. Logic strikes again. And I try to reach out to the the Santa's people. They don't want to hear.
Starting point is 00:08:17 Ego maniac! And you know what they're going to do now? Oh, this is about spite. Does it matter if it's about spite? We deal in reality here. And as I rip California, And cities like Portland in L.A. and Chicago over anti-business stupidity, Governor DeSantis, who's been very good with business,
Starting point is 00:08:46 this was purely anti-business egotomaniacal maneuvers by DeSantis that made no sense whatsoever, and he just got bitten the ass. And you know who loses out? His state. His state. I rest my case. Hopefully there's not more of this. and hopefully he recognizes he's not bigger than Disney. He's not.
Starting point is 00:09:20 He's not even close. I love great businesses. Disney made some mistakes. They paid for it. Stop kicking them in the grapefruits. Because you just got kicked back in the grapefruit and you know who the victims are. DeSantis isn't the victim. The economy here will be.
Starting point is 00:09:51 And you know what else the Santas just did? He handed over a great tidbit to Donald Trump when they go into debates in the primaries. Stupid! Now here's what's not stupid. On Monday, I told you that the semiconductors were emerging. Little did I know. As we have explained to throughout the year, semiconductors are great leaders of markets, both up and down. they started to go on the move on Monday
Starting point is 00:10:28 we told you about it again little did we know what would happen yesterday and today in the semiconductors and the rest of NASDAQ land as we have told you here the only thing we have bought is mega cap tech
Starting point is 00:10:49 you know what mega cap tech is doing boom boom boom boom boom boom boom how did we know the roadmap will explain the roadmap again that's up next on investors edge hi i'm gary colbaum hosted a nationally syndicated radio show investors edge we're not just handsome radio people we manage investors money for a living specializing in fee-based discretionary money management no big commissions just a fee on the assets that's managed we also provide a full range of personalized services including retirement plans planning, fixed income, and educational needs, all to assist you in achieving your financial goals.

Starting point is 00:12:36 Hi, I'm Dr. Jake Goodman, host of Beyond the Script, the podcast where I sit down with pharmacists to answer the health questions you didn't even know you could ask at the pharmacy counter. In this episode, we are diving into gut health with CVS pharmacist Victoria Motola, who explains why so many of us live with stomach issues. we should not accept as normal. A lot of what I see is just like chronic bloating, chronic stomach aches. Like I get a stomachache every time that I eat. And it just becomes like a lifestyle where, oh, yeah, you know, I just have a stomach cake every day. Or I'm constantly feeling like gassy.
Starting point is 00:13:14 And all of those things are not something that generally, if you have a healthy gut, you should be living with. So that's when we deep dive. We deep dive into your medication. We deep dive into your OTC medication. And then at that point, we can probably. identify something that we can change. Hear the full conversation, plus some fascinating facts about how gut health affects so much more

Starting point is 00:14:01 It's time to switch on the integrator units and get the brain cells working. You're listening to. Hey, this promise is to be fun. Investors Edge. The last bastion of quality programming. With Gary Coltbaum. It doesn't get better than this. By the way, I don't call myself Mr. Logic tongue and cheap.
Starting point is 00:14:34 I mean it. How logical was it that Disney's. was going to say enough. How logical? How often can you get beat over the head when you have been this magnificent corporation for the whole state of Florida? And I can sit here for an hour and go through what Disney has impacted and what is a magnet for. When you have a chance, if you're ever in central Florida, go to the convention center and you will see a place that attracts bazillions of companies to come here and do their meetings. You know how much revenue that gets from that?
Starting point is 00:15:33 Do you know why they come to Orlando? And do you know why they bring their families? Anyway, so explanation. Throughout the many years, the semiconductors, which go into a lot of things, have been a very good harbinger of the market. I'm going to say it's in the 90 plus percentile, a harbinger for the market.
Starting point is 00:16:12 On Monday, we just said to you, they woke up, got above the 50 day, let's see what comes of it, and then yesterday another Bafo day. Today, and another Bafo day. and the market's very narrow. It finally lifted up the data. I'll explain the whole market in a minute,
Starting point is 00:16:43 but just rates a big wow on what we are seeing. We don't ask why. I can tell you that the earnings and sales growth, blah. Maybe it's the artificial intelligence things. I don't know. don't really care. What we've been able to do is notice that 70% of the market is in, you can have to assume we know what one looks like downtrends, while the semiconductors started a new uptrend on Monday of unknown price and time. When we talk about that, you never know if
Starting point is 00:17:29 it's going to work. Well, there's been plenty of times through the years we say, looks like the I can tell you the marijuana stocks I believe let me even get that out the marijuana stocks back in October of last year we said you know we think the marijuana stocks may start to get going it lasted a couple of weeks and then bye bye so you just never know on the other end we said to you we thought the regional banks look like they're getting in trouble we didn't know they'd crash. Yesterday we came out and said we think there's a chance they put in their low based on this roadmap that we follow. What you have to understand is price plays out in pictures. We use the phrase looking at a photo album for familiar faces. Go get the book by Marty Schwartz called Pitbull.
Starting point is 00:18:32 He's the one who came up with that phrase, not I. and when we see it thus we saw it Monday shuffled around and then boom Wednesday and Thursday Enfuego and that's knowing you got some earnings reports we're careful about saying about what we own but we do own the strongest name in semiconductors and we were a little late actually we were late. We don't know how long it lasts, how far it goes. Applied materials reported after hours, it's down a buck 70 in the aftermarket to 12820, but it was just on Monday when it started moving 117. So it would be normal to pull it back a little bit. But what it did is it lit the fuse. what have we been telling you?
Starting point is 00:19:42 Mega Cap Tech. And what have we been saying? Seven names. But we've also been telling you which names we're not doing anything. Like a Tesla. That's nowhere near what a Microsoft is done or an Nvidia. So today, the Dow, just so you know, and I'm going to give you the Dow at its weakest today,
Starting point is 00:20:16 At its weakest at 2 p.m., the Dow was down 208 points. When the Dow was down 208 points, the NASDAQ was still up 80. The NASDAQ 100 at its lowest today was up 110. When the Dow was down 200. So what happens if the Dow rallies? Well, guess what? The Dow rallied some into the close, still pedestrian, but the name of the game is what we've been telling you.
Starting point is 00:21:06 Mega cap tech, other tech, there are other tech stocks now on the move, and semiconductors. And a smattering of other stuff. And by the end of the day, the tech area was so strong, it lifted the weak, which still, by the way, is relatively weak. how long it lasts, how far it goes, we don't have a freaking clue. We're just going to ride the rails as far as it wants to go. And it got stronger today in spite of, oh, we got debt ceilings.
Starting point is 00:21:55 What do we tell you here? It's not the news, it's how things react. And they're a bunch of con artists anyhow. On the other end of the spectrum, we've been telling you, oh, the gold and silver's top. Guess what was down today, the golden silver? We've been warning you about Chinese stocks. Guess what was down today?
Starting point is 00:22:12 Chinese stocks. Managed care. Down. And all these other areas today. Bounce today like yesterday. But if you scan them, bouncing in downtrends. So we stick to the major uptrends until they croak. And today finished well.
Starting point is 00:22:39 High note. Up next. The numbers. The particulars. This is the one only investors' ed. Hi, I'm Dr. Jake Goodman, host of Beyond the Script, the podcast where I sit down with pharmacists to answer the health questions you didn't even know you could ask at the pharmacy counter. In this episode, we are diving into gut health with CVS pharmacist, Victoria Motola,
Starting point is 00:23:24 who explains why so many of us live with stomach issues we should not accept as normal. A lot of what I see is just like chronic bloating, chronic stomach aches. like I get a stomachache every time that I eat and it just becomes like a lifestyle where, oh yeah, you know, I just have a stomachache every day or I'm constantly feeling like gassy and all of those things are not something that generally if you have a healthy gut
Starting point is 00:23:50 you should be living with. So that's when we deep dive. We deep dive into your medication. We deep dive into your OTC medication and then at that point we can probably identify something that we can change. Hear the full conversation plus some fascinating facts about how gut
Starting point is 00:24:06 health affects so much more than just your stomach on Beyond the Script, a podcast from CVS Pharmacy and IHeart Radio. Listen now wherever you get your podcasts. Starting point is 00:25:19 make it visible with Viz. Viz is a once daily prescription eye drop to treat blurry near vision for up to 10 hours. The most common side effects that may be experienced while using Viz include eye irritation, temporary dim or dark vision, headaches and eye redness. Talk to an eye doctor to learn if Viz is right for you. Learn more at Viz.com. He's got to be pleased with that. The crowd is just on his feet here. He's a Cinderella boy. With Gary Colbomb.
Starting point is 00:25:49 It comes highly recommended. You're going to feel better if you talk to him. And by the way, this is how stupid some people are. On my Twitter feed, because I posted the DeSantis thing, you ready? Disney loses. They were moving for lower taxes for the company. What? No, they weren't.
Starting point is 00:26:23 The lowest taxes are in full. Florida. Keep the woke mind virus in California. Mr. Iger is ruining Disney. There's another one. I live in Florida and good. We don't need any more Gen Z or woke crazy's coming. Actually, we don't need any. These people are more. I'm not going to say it. These people have their heads in the sand. Everybody's taken their sides and they're in the tank and they just don't think logically. another one Florida can afford it New York billionaires are moving here Ron will holy crap the tank
Starting point is 00:27:17 the tank everybody's in their tank and not just not looking at what's sitting in front of them because it's my guy it's not my guy it's my party it's not my party it's amazing to watch if Biden
Starting point is 00:27:41 did to do Disney, what the Santas did to Disney, the same people who are yelling and screaming would be cursing out Biden. The tank! And that's how you get the $32 trillion of debt. All right. Also, as we have told you here, there's only a select few people. There's only a select few people that we really follow carefully. One of them passed away.
Starting point is 00:28:20 Sam Zell. One of the most brilliant minds. One of the most brilliant minds in real estate. Had his moments, bought up a newspaper chain and lost a bunch, but one of the most brilliant minds in real estate passed away at the age of 81. Most definitely a man, I am going to miss his words and his opinion. I've never met him. Okay. Today's market wrap brought to you by Investment-Dashmodels.com. That's Jim Rohrabak, one of the great market timers.
Starting point is 00:29:10 No gray areas with the man you're either in or out of the market risk proprietary indicators. Go check it out. Investment-dash models.com. The Dowp 115 and I got Newsfea. It was down at I think 3.30 around there. But only 115, but the S&P up 30. NASDAQ 188 NASDAQ 100, $1,245, the socks up 98.
Starting point is 00:29:38 And here's the amazing thing about the NASDAQ. 2,200 up, 1900 down. Advanced decline figure, stunk. What's the story? Just what we told you. Apple up two and a half. Google up two. Keep in mind some of these are not as high as other prices.
Starting point is 00:30:00 Microsoft up foreign change, NVIDI up 15, Oracle up two and a half. Amazon up two and a half, AMD up for, Salesforce, com up for a Facebook up 460 Netflix up 30 boys I got to tell you I saw the news on Netflix and I see it opening up today they opened it up at 346 let me get this right closed it at 339 I think that's got to be wrong 346, let's call 348. And I'm saying to myself, all right, Netflix. One of the bigger caps, it's got a pivot at 348, but the big one's at 350. Within six minutes, it's 360.
Starting point is 00:31:06 And I missed it. But close at 369. I'm going to catch it if they pull it back. Netflix is now on the big watch. Why? Because it's a big name and the big's winning. That's the story here. The big is winning. What more do I need to say? Today's the first day. The NASDAQ had more new highs than new lows, though. I'm going to say I doubt it because a lot of them are spacks and whatever, but it was better.
Starting point is 00:31:44 And just the tone was damn good. And my stuff screen that was red all day, finish green, the problem is the oils were green, but they're in a bearish phase some of the commodities turn green just minor green bearish phase some of the transports green bearish phase and list goes on and on what's in a bullish phase though is the semis were up 98 and the housing stocks were up today again now the financials were down all day the regional bank kare finished up xlf finished up i have no complaints because the crap's And we'll see where it takes us. Not everything, but it be working.
Starting point is 00:32:35 And my only hope is applied materials goes down big and takes it down a little bit, but it's not. Now it's only down a buck in the after market after rallying 10 bucks this week. And breaking out a range, but we don't buy anything before earnings. May also state for the record the NASDAQ 100 is a new yearly high.
Starting point is 00:33:05 while the NASDAQ advanced declines is just off the bare market low what did we tell you about seven stocks being 51% but that's where the money's flowing until it ain't that's the story when you have a chance go look at the IGV that's the software ETF go look at the SMH that's one of the semiconductor ETFs by the way that's at a new yearly high, but the socks is not, but getting close. I also want to let you know. These are some of things I also I watch. There is a symbol called IPO. It's an IPO index, maybe turning up. We'll see. There is also something called the IBD-50 index. Not yet, but getting close. So let me repeat. Semiconductors are leading up. and it's lifting a bunch of technology. And some of the down and out software stocks. What do we tell you?
Starting point is 00:34:40 Now, you better be attached to the New Yearly High list. Because if this set, and it's an if, if it has legs. Again, if, first things that move, often the best potential. Let me repeat, the NASDAQ 100 is New Yearly High. amazingly so with the advanced declines near the new yearly low NASDAQ's not close to the new yearly high why less representation of the big guys it's stunning the Russell 2000 today
Starting point is 00:35:25 was up a smidge and again 2,200 up 1900 down on the NASDAQ on a day that's NASDAQ 100 is up 245 that should be 36 to 8 but that's fine what do we tell you many times we don't mind narrow. We don't mind narrow at all. We'll just stick with the narrow until the narrow goes by-bye.
Starting point is 00:35:58 Up next. What else? This is the one only investors' edge. Hi, I'm Dr. Jake Goodman, host of Beyond the Script, the podcast where I sit down with pharmacists to answer the health questions you didn't even know you could ask
Starting point is 00:36:49 at the pharmacy counter. Starting point is 00:39:15 In the Gester's Edge. With Gary Culper. It is amazing how people are in the tank. They can't even see logic standing right in the face. Oh, but we don't want any woke people here. That's stupid. In the news, because we love talking about marijuana. Just letting you know U.S. workers testing positive for marijuana reaches a 25-year record.
Starting point is 00:39:59 Of course it is. Don't you want stoned workers? The government says it's okay. Bring in the bong, baby. As we've told you, Manhattan, it's the giant bong hit. You just get stone walking in the city. It is one big giant stank there, ladies and gentlemen. In the news, ESPN, interesting.
Starting point is 00:40:25 They are planning to stream the ESPN channel, laying the groundwork to get off of having a channel. Does that make any sense? So ESPN will no longer be on direct TV ultimately or cable system. It's just going to stream? Huh. People are saying that's going to happen, but don't they get paid a crap load of money to be on? I saw that.
Starting point is 00:41:00 I was like, whoa. I'm not the biggest streamer. In the news, Walmart, stock was only up two bucks today. They are saying that a lot of people, I mean, they're getting business. Do you know Walmart? Their sales are up 8% year over year? To $152 billion for the quarter.
Starting point is 00:41:27 Do you know how tough it is to grow your sales when you do that amount? What a stud business. Yet the communists in D.C. We're going after them. The greatest job creating machine, the company dropped inflation by themselves with their prices, and they were gone after because we weren't unions. You've got to have union.
Starting point is 00:41:54 In the news, I thought this was interesting. When plans for the Sunsea Project, a massive power line and wind farm in the Western U.S. were first laid in 2006, George W. Bush was still president, and Taylor Swift had just released a debut album. It took 17 years and now it's been approved. You think that's a problem?
Starting point is 00:42:25 17 years to approve. I'm going to say that's a problem. In the news, California's new budget reality. Governor Newsom is now in trouble. The state is now forecasting a $31.5 billion deficit up from $9 billion from his January plan and a reversal from last year's surplus. even he blames the progressive tax structure the state's top marginal tax rate of 13.3% hits households making more than a million. You know, I was thinking to myself, if you make $2 million in California, I think the 13, I'm not sure when the 13% kicks in.
Starting point is 00:43:19 So let's, but let that means above a million 13%. If you make $2 million in that second million, you're giving to California $1,000,000. $30,000 of your hard-eering money. In Florida, you give them nothing. Just saying. Yet Florida has a surplus. California has a big deficit. Interesting. Yet the legislator wants to raise taxes even more. To spend more on climate social welfare and raises for government workers. Hmm. Because it's been working so well there. Tell my friends in San Fran and L. LA. In the news, Rafael Nidal is out of the French Open and I'm worried he's going to be out of Wimbledon. I'll be going to Wimbledon and that worries me. One of my favorites. I've always worried
Starting point is 00:44:28 about how long he's going to last. I'm surprised he'll last this long because, man, is he ferocious hitting that ball? And just in the news, wealthy homebuyers are flocking to Puerto Rico. I don't know if you know this, but Puerto Rican real estate on the high end is just skyrocketing because they have this whole tax thing where you don't pay taxes on this, that, and the other thing. And it's pretty nice. I don't know if you've been to Puerto Rico. Man, is it beautiful. Some of the beaches there, my, my, my.
Starting point is 00:45:00 And I think that's my news of the day. And, yeah, can't wait to see what else people are saying on my Twitter feed. Because I posted the DeSantis. They're insane. People are insane. Yeah, who gives a crap about the economy? We don't want whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Whoa, well, as a governor, you're supposed to be a very good negotiator.
Starting point is 00:45:28 You're supposed to be at the table with people that you disagree with and iron it out. Not urinate on them to where they just dropped a billion dollar project. Starting point is 00:46:07 Not affecting squat. And we'll just keep on, keeping on with this big cap stuff and see how it goes. We will ignore the downtrends. We'll stay away from, though at the end of the day, and I've yet to scan. It was a much better close. And just remember, write this down. Gary says, watch them semiconductors. If they get going, they get going.
