Starting point is 00:00:31 Investor's Edge with Gary Coltbaum. Straight talk about you and your money. Now from the BizTalk Studios, here is Gary Cultbaum. And welcome once again to Investors Edge. I'm Gary Coltbaum, your host day. Thanks of being with us today. Glad you here, ladies and gentlemen, happy that you are listening. It's Monday.
Starting point is 00:00:52 Darn, we have four more days of this week already. It's February 3rd, 2025. Hope you had a good weekend. Hope you're doing well. As always, we have a limited time to cover so much that we have to cover or want to cover. Hope you are listening carefully. This is serious talk on you and everything that affects you. The markets, the economy, your job, your industry, whatever's going on in D.C. with all the Morlocks.
Starting point is 00:01:22 The new administration, the old administration, the new administration proposals. And out of the box today, we'll talk. tariffs. And if you do not get this radio show in your city, we'll post it at garyk.com. We'll also post it on our Twitter feed, which is now X. And if you follow us on X, if you don't, you should. And if you'd like to email us, just be nice. Why? Because we're always nice, unless you like Hamas and things like that. So ladies and gentlemen, we tell you exactly how we feel. We don't pull any punches. We tell you how we feel good or bad, ridiculous or not. I think I changed my mind today three times. So in case you don't know, we came into today
Starting point is 00:02:20 where the markets were getting blasted. The markets were blasted. We hit a load today of 43, 879 on the Dow, around 10 o'clock. We finished at 44-421. So that's 121, 542 points off the lows. Yeah, that means we were down 664 points at one time today. What else? The NASDAQ today, at one time today, early, was 19141. We finished at 19391, 250 points. The NASDAQ was still down 235 points, so it was down near 500 early in the day. And we covered a lot and then sold off in the last hour. And we'll give out those final numbers.
Starting point is 00:03:27 But here's the story. The president, Donald Trump, put on tariffs 10% on China, 25% on Mexico and 25% on Canada. As you know, we do believe tariffs. We're not tariff people. There's a lot of bull crap going on about what tariffs are and who pays them. but we know the actual facts and we don't pull any punches on those facts. A tariff is a charge pretty much by a government for an entity to pay an additional, whatever you want to call it, tax fee, whatever, and 25% is 25%.
Starting point is 00:04:20 So if Walmart buys a product from Canada or Mexico, and there's an extra 25%. Walmart is going to pay that extra 25% to our treasury. So Walmart's paying for it, not Canada, not Mexico. And Walmart gets to decide if they're going to pass it on to the consumer. All of it, none of it, or some of it. That doesn't sound too good, does it? It doesn't.
Starting point is 00:04:56 So Trump did that and the market was very, very, very unhappy about it, big time unhappy about it. And I'm sitting around thinking, wait a minute. The president watches the market very carefully, much carefully. Isn't going to do something about it? Is he going to react to it? Well, within a cut, already he was talking to Mexico. he was already talked into Canada and listened to his credit.
Starting point is 00:05:31 We give him all the credit in the world as we are in the Trump moment segment of our show. We give Donald Trump all the credit in the world because guess what Mexico did? They promised, well first off, the tariffs are backed away for a month with Mexico,
Starting point is 00:05:51 not necessarily with Canada yet and not with China. Mexico said they're going to put 10,000 of their military on the borders to make sure, get this, no more illegals coming into the United States. Wow, that's amazing. As you know, we are big time. We are big time when it comes to having controlled immigration, not what we have been seeing throughout the years. And we're also a big believer that they're so full of crap, the media, that all of a sudden they care about it.
Starting point is 00:06:37 They didn't care when we had massive open borders by Biden, and they didn't care when Biden closed, just so you know, in the last six months of his administration, Biden started doing what Trump was doing beforehand. And the media didn't complain about Biden. But all of a sudden Trump's doing all of a sudden. He's like a bad guy. So screw the media. But I must tell you, I have to give credit because I'm asking myself, and this is where I was changing my mind all day, is Trump the cat who ate the canary?
Starting point is 00:07:16 Is he that smart and is he that good knowing he's going to move the needle? that what he's doing is going to affect Mexico so much or Canada so much that they have to move our way and by the way just do logical things anyhow like keep the border closed and of course he's talking fentanyl and other things so I got to tell you on our Trump moment today I got to hand it to him because as you know I am a big believer in outcome outcome. What is the results? And obviously it's going to be fluid going forward, but Mexico has come back. And for starters, they're going to address their end of the immigration front that they have failed so badly on. Now let's see if the same thing happens with Canada. And you can read up also what Mexico's decide to do, but to me, that's the big macha.
Starting point is 00:08:34 Control the border. I don't know if you know this, but the cost to this country for what they did in opening the borders up, just come on in, come one, come all, is stunning. Now, as I said, the news is going to be fluid. what I don't want to see, listen carefully, is what I call the mind change. Tomorrow, oh, we're going to go back with those tariffs because we're not exactly happy with Mexico said we want more or we don't believe them or this, that, or the other thing. We'll see. So 10,000 Mexican soldiers designated to stop the flow of fentanyl and illegal migrants into the
Starting point is 00:09:33 country, immediately pause, as we said, the tariffs, and we'll see where it goes. Wow. Wow. That's all I've got to say is, wow. I am impressed. And of course, tomorrow's another day. The Dow did finish down 122, the S&P 45, the NASDAQ 235, NASDAQ 135, NASDAQ 180, the transports were still a juicy 379. The socks was down a big juicy 91. Europe was weak, Asia was weak, but we had a decent comeback. Advanced declines were not good. And again, at the end of the day,
Starting point is 00:10:22 just so you know, the Dow was up. After being down 600, the Dow was up at one time today and sold off into the close. but 122 points down is a lot better than 600 235 NASDAQ
Starting point is 00:10:46 is a lot better what I say it was 450 and by the way in after or pre-markets it was like 570 it was crazy overnight I was scared out of my wits What did we do today?
Starting point is 00:11:05 That'll be up next. And whatever else. Thanks for being here. This is the one only Investor's Edge. I recently spoke with IBM's new director of research, Jake Embatta. We discussed his vision for the future of quantum computing. At IBM research, what we always do is answer what is the future of computing, whether it's coming, up with new algorithms, coming up with better AI, coming up with quantum, or coming up with
Starting point is 00:12:59 just how do different accelerators go together? It's our DNA to answer the question of what is the future. Isn't it a perfect problem for IBM because you kind of need to have a legacy of building stuff? Yes. Building actual physical machines. Yeah, it's why I came to IBM. I wanted the experience, the culture of building hard things. that others have not done before. Where do you imagine we are in the timeline of this technology? There will come a point when it will mature.
Starting point is 00:13:33 Right? Yeah. My cell phone is a mature technology at this point. How far are we from that point with Kondo? By 2029, we'll build the first fault-tolerant quantum computer. That is one that can run a very, very large, large problem. To learn how IBM is building the future of computing, visit IBM.com

Starting point is 00:15:32 It's time to switch on the integrator units and get the brain cells working. You're listening to. Hey, this promises to be fun. Investors Edge. The last bastion of quality programming with Gary Coltbaum. It doesn't get better than this. So, uh, we were scared out of our wits this morning, but the only thing we did is we, as you know, we made a real good move in Tesla in the last month or so. We gave back some of that today, sold it as it broke the 50 day, and that one really didn't come back today. Of course, it'll be up big tomorrow just to piss us off, but hey, we don't play with the downside, and we were really upset about that one because I got to tell you Friday, it looked like Tesla was going to go. That's to the upside. And that's it.
Starting point is 00:16:27 We kept everything else, and we'll see what tomorrow brings. Didn't like the way it finished. We've really toned things down. And again, we'll see what tomorrow. Now, just so you know, we've got a lot more earnings to come as we move forward. In numbers this week, a lot. But a lot of the big ones have reported. But Google comes out, Amazon, Spotify, PayPal, Merck in the Dow.
Starting point is 00:16:55 What else? Prudential. Uniper, KALIC, micro strategy. Arm Holdings, Disney and the Dow, Uber. But a lot of things that I'm not, Roblox, Ralph Lauren, I said Amazon, Honeywell, I believe that's still Nadal Hilton, Hershey, Eli Lilly, we'll see what's going on there, and whatever else.
Starting point is 00:17:22 But just, wow, what a freaking day, ladies and gentlemen. That's all I can tell you. It was just one of those days where I just took a step back and I really started to formulate what if, what not. And again, as we stated, we'll see what happens tomorrow. A few things from my weekend. Well, we went to Chili's because Brinker International, and by the way, was up another seven bucks today. Stocks had a big move, gargantuan earnings. and I really should have visited a few months ago.
Starting point is 00:17:58 That's bad on me. And I just had conversation with a couple of people that worked there, and they just said, business is great. Simple as that. I can tell you, the menus look a lot different than I used to go, and I haven't been there in a while. The place was packed at two in the afternoon. They had a lunch special at 3 to 3 o'clock.
Starting point is 00:18:22 At 3 o'clock, it's somewhat emptied out, but the guy had said to me, oh, at 5 o'clock, wait to you see what happens here. I thought the pricing was very good. The value was good. But most of all, whatever's going on, I can tell you during lunchtime, the parking lot was packed. Wow. And what's funny is the stock broke out back in October, and I said to myself, it's chilies.
Starting point is 00:18:54 That's just an old restaurant chain. And they own something called Maggiano's also. I'll never do that again. It broke out at $76.6. It's $188 today. And now I'm first going to the restaurant. Bad on Gary. Because as you know, usually I'm out there doing my thing.
Starting point is 00:19:20 Went to Apple Store. went to buy my wife a new iPhone what is it 16 got of the 16 max and guess what I did I bought one for myself also but I must tell you
Starting point is 00:19:36 I've been to this Apple store many a times it felt about 50% of normal I spoke to three or four different people and they all said the same thing Yeah, it's not what it was. We'll see.
Starting point is 00:20:07 It's just one place. But I checked one other. And the in-store business is not what it used to be. And this is coming on the heels of a new phone. What I loved in the store, though, they had some guy teaching you how to use all kinds of things. And I sat down and listened for 20 minutes. And I got to tell you, this new phone's pretty cool. Got some good stuff.
Starting point is 00:20:33 What else? So over the weekend, they were killing the crypto. But I will tell you, Bitcoin, which hit like 93,000, I think closed like at 100,000. So that one, let's see, Bitcoin price. Let's see what I got for you. 101,000 at the close hit like 93 today. And it tells you how crazy is, but I do want to let you know. They have this other coin called Ethereum.
Starting point is 00:21:08 I know you've heard of it. That didn't come back so much and is much weaker than the Bitcoin. And we got asked about it over the weekend, and my answer is, I don't have a freaking clue. I don't know what drives Ethereum. I don't know what drives Bitcoin. Leave no doubt Bitcoin is the one. And if you go to these websites, I, I, I, I don't know. I've told you about this.
Starting point is 00:21:36 They came out with over 30,000 coins. Most of them are zero. So we're just letting you know. I think this one website called CryptoWatch or something like that, and there are others that I go to, and they just list them all. We'll see, oh, coin ranking.com. Bitcoin's number one with a $2 trillion market cap,
Starting point is 00:22:05 Ethereum number two, 326 billion. XRP, what is that ripple? 155 billion. But then you go to the, all the way to the end, and I can tell you, when I click on all coins, there's a bazillion of them. And a bazillion of them. And there's still a bunch that are worth a billion here,
Starting point is 00:22:38 a billionaire, because the world is insane. but as I go down the list, a ton of them are worthless, which calls into question, well, why the Bitcoin, what makes it the beauty pageant winner, for lack of a better way to put it. I have no idea except to say it is what it is. I hate that line, but it's fact. I hate that line, but it's fact. and that is that Nvidia got to bring
Starting point is 00:23:28 oh by the way Apple was down $8 today so Apple from the open on Friday was it Friday? Yeah that they had earnings on Thursday afternoon 247 to 28 from that high hit
Starting point is 00:23:44 225 and change today last I looked that's $19 on 15 billion shares $285 billion in market cap from Friday's Open to today. Very weird. Up next, going to do a little Nvidia, some aftermarket, whatever else. I'm Gary.
Starting point is 00:24:11 This is the one only investor's edge. Hello, hello. I'm Malcolm Gladwell, host of the podcast Smart Talks with IBM. I recently sat down with IBM's chairman and CEO, Arvin Krishna. And I asked him, how can companies use AI to its full? fullest potential to create smarter business. My one advice to them, pick areas you can scale. Don't pick the shiny little toys on the side.
Starting point is 00:24:56 For example. If anybody has more than 10% of what they had for customer service 10 years ago, they're already five years behind. If anybody is not using AI to make their developers who write software 30% more productive today, with the goal of being 70% more productive. Yeah. Wow. So we are not asking our clients to be the first experiment on it. We say, you can leverage what we did.
Starting point is 00:25:29 We're happy to bring out all our learnings, including what needs to change in the process, because the biggest change is not technology, is getting people to accept that there's a different way to do things. To listen to the full conversation, visit IBM.com slash smart talks. Want to earn extra income for your business? Starting point is 00:26:57 We're listening to. America is talking. Investors edge. He's got to be pleased with that. The crowd is just on his feet here. He's a Cinderella boy. With Gary Colbomb. It comes highly recommended.
Starting point is 00:27:10 You're going to feel better if you talk to him. NVIDIA. I have no idea what Tamar brings. NVIDia on the open today was around $113. Yeah, it was just, right at the open, closed at about 116 and change. I got it up about 70 cents in the aftermarket 117. We're just letting you know while a bunch of names have recovered a decent amount of last Monday's carnage in AI stocks, and Vitya close below the low of last Monday today. So very, very
Starting point is 00:28:09 week, notwithstanding tomorrow, and trading below its 200-day moving average. So by definition, there are two things for me. Number one, it's below the 50-day moving average, and the longer it stays below, the worse the process becomes, in that the 50-day moving average will start turning down, and that's troublesome. if it stays below the 200-day moving average, which is your long-term moving average, which it was trying to hold so badly for the last six days, even worse. I suspect they'll get it back above with a good NASDAQ day.
Starting point is 00:29:02 That said, the stock is fully $37,000. below the highs of just three weeks ago, which is about 23%. And it is trading exactly where it was. Do do, do, do, do do, do, do. First week of June, 2024. So just letting you know, in order for me to even consider it, a lot would have to happen at this juncture. I do want to mention Palantir, a very popular stock with ridiculous valuation.
Starting point is 00:29:46 And I say valuation is, by the way, they're making money. They have revenue of, let's see, 714, 21, let's call 2.6 billion. And they just reported revenue of 2.6 billion, let's add another 100 on the new earnings. earnings, 2.7 billion, they have a market cap of near $200 billion. Doesn't matter. The stock closed today, up a buck in a quarter. It's up another $12.88 to 9660 in the aftermarket as they raise numbers going forward. They only beat the number by a little bit, but they raised numbers going forward by a decent amount. I wouldn't call it spectacular, but certainly the market likes whatever they had to say. And that is helping some of the AI in the aftermarket and the NASDAQ 100, which closed down, let's see, 518, 11.
Starting point is 00:30:58 I got it at 52014 in the aftermarket up 100. it. So that means it's carrying some things with it. Let's see. Do do do do do do. Expectations for this coming quarter were about $800 billion. They're going to do $860 billion. For the year, they were supposed to do $3.5 billion. They're going to do about $3.75 billion. And the market's paying up very nicely for it. And again, that's helping some other things. We'll see what happens. Now, what ifs? I hear the president had a conversation with the head of Canada today this afternoon. What if nothing gets done there and the tariff stays on? Well, the tariff stays on.
Starting point is 00:31:53 We'll see. I am really of the belief that the goal is not tariffs. The goal is to move the needle. and all I can tell you when it came to Mexico, President Trump got his way. And let me state for the record, wow, well done. I applaud him. And I will tell you I was pissed off at him over the weekend, over this tariff thing. But if it just moves the needle and does not get into the system,
Starting point is 00:32:43 I repeat. Awesome. Well done. Good stuff. Canada up. And next up will be China with the 10%. I don't know what happens there. What are the outcomes if we end up with that tariff with Canada?
Starting point is 00:33:11 Well, I'm being told that Canada needs us. We don't need them. I'm going to disagree. I'm going to say Canada needs us more, even much more. We still need them on the things they do and provide. But call me thrilled if Mexico follows through and helps us securing the border and getting things done. Yay. What else do I have for you today?
Starting point is 00:33:49 Well, it's interesting. Why would anybody be pissed about anyone in Trump's circle wanting to make the government more efficient and more effective and rooting out all the waste? Why would anybody be against that? Oh, because they were part of the problem. That would be the only reason. We are finding out, and we already knew, that boy, oh, boy, man, oh man, what they were doing with our tax dollars would make you throw up.
Starting point is 00:34:52 And I think we're just seeing some of the tip of the iceberg. You know, they have this thing called USAID, USAID. And we found out that 45 million of our dollars went to DEI scholarships in Burma. 520 million to ESG investments in Africa. 1.2 billion, get this. This is the line. Undisclosed recipients. I'm not making this up.
Starting point is 00:35:43 It's unreal. No checks and balances. and all of a sudden somebody wants checks and balances and people are pissed, that means they are losing their nest egg. How about $1.5 million of our tax dollars to promote DEI in Serbia's workplace? How about $20 million on a Sesame Street show in Iraq? How about $56 million to boost Egyptian and Tunisia tourism? 56 million. What?
Starting point is 00:36:30 How about 11 million to tell Vietnamese to stop burning trash? By the way, I double checked. That's what was written down. Can $11 million, just $11 million, a little footnote to these people? Could it help your community? Got any sidewalks to repair? You got any veterans walking the streets? You got any children in your community that need a little more food?
Starting point is 00:37:04 Or maybe a homeless shelter needs fixing up? No, 11 million to tell Vietnamese to stop burning trash. We're nothing but their freaking slush fund. And the guilty parties are showing themselves very easily. They're the ones that are complaining. Up next. This, that, and the other thing, or whatever else. Amazing, huh?

And all this administration is doing is saying, wait, well, hold on a second here. We're just going over this.
Starting point is 00:42:12 And we're making sure that taxpayers aren't getting screwed anymore. What's your problem? The problem is. they have used us as the biggest freaking gargantuan monolithic slush fund the history of time, running $2 trillion deficits and not given a crap
Starting point is 00:42:32 and giving us the middle finger. Now, I don't know what the outcome of Doge is going to be, but certainly the effort is there. And as I have told you, if they are able, if they are able, if they are able to get our government under control
Starting point is 00:42:57 and more efficient and more effective. Instead of a headwind, it becomes a tailwind. And I find the... Let's see, who's that? Ilhan Omar. She's the one where her campaign paid her husband's business like two or three million bucks. No, no conflict of interest there.
Starting point is 00:43:19 She's complaining about this. Interesting. Interesting. Can't wait to see where money flew there. It's about time. What else today that I've, I'll take them to task when I have to? The Trump administration today, the Department of Justice, announced a task force today to combat anti-Semitism. Awesome.
Starting point is 00:43:59 They just sent a woman who was here on a visa, who is on video, who is on video. praising Hamas and happy what they did to the Jews and Israel. By the way, they didn't just do it to Jews. I don't know if you know five people from Thailand were just released. Guess where this woman is? She's out of the country. What a concept. You pay for your choices.
Starting point is 00:44:34 And maybe the next people that are thinking about that, are going to shut up. What a concept. If you are here on a visa and you're promoting terrorism, murder and rape. You're out of here. How logical is that?
Starting point is 00:44:58 Well, for me, as logical as can be, so there you go on something else today. We don't ask for much here. So what do we have so far? Mexico? Panama, Colombia, Venezuela just let go of like six prisoners, hostages being home.
Starting point is 00:45:36 They're ending DEI programs, which, by the way, I saw somebody on the Grammys last night complaining how DEI is good. What? Huh? What? I believe in inclusiveness. but I also believe in meritocracy. That's all. How hard is that to figure out?
Starting point is 00:46:09 Merit. The person who wind and complain on won an award? You know why they won an award? Merit. Interesting. Are bureaucracies being slashed? Great. Border crossings have dropped by 93%.
Starting point is 00:46:33 terrific. And by the way, that is about the safety of children and women. You do know the media did not report that so many people died on these little maid-to-order boats trying to cross or on the back of trucks, dead. The missing kids, the media is not reporting it. They would report it now. So just letting you know, I thought the day ended up pretty good. I have no idea about tomorrow. And of course, as I have said to you,
Starting point is 00:47:30 Donald Trump is quite the Monday to Tuesday to Tuesday to Wednesday. But on this Monday, I'm going to throw some credit his way. and we'll let you know if anything changes. We'll let you know if they do anything insane or wrong or doesn't work. But for today, good day. Could have been better, but I see futures are already up nicely in the aftermarket. Maybe we're hearing something from Canada. I don't see that as of yet, but I'm pretty sure if they cut a decent deal with Mexico,
Starting point is 00:48:13 maybe Canada's next, and we can get past all this crap. Ladies and gentlemen, and if anything changes, we'll gladly let you know. I'm just glad we kept most of our everything today, even though we were scared out of our wits. No fun when the market opens up down 600 and the NASDAQ, I think was down about 400 at one time. Did I say that? Yeah, 450 maybe. No fun. but good clothes.
Starting point is 00:48:49 That all said, you have a great evening and drive carefully. And when you get home, do like we do, quite simple. Make sure you hug your family. Make sure you hug your children. They will feel better. You'll feel better.
Starting point is 00:49:00 I promise. Stay well, be well. Until tomorrow. Good night. This has been Investors Edge with Gary Cult Bomb on BizTalk. To listen to past episodes or to get in contact with Gary,
