Starting point is 00:01:16 Glad you're here, ladies and gentlemen. Happy that you are listening. It is the end of January. The 31st. It's Friday. 2025. Hope you're having a great day. As always, we have lots to cover.
Starting point is 00:01:35 Serious talk on everything that affects you. We will do the markets, the economy. We're going to start every day throwing in the word tariffs, jobs, your job, your industry, debt, deficits, doge. Is it doge or dogy? Who the heck cares, right? and whatever else comes to mind. And if you do not get this radio show in your city, we will post them at garyk.com.
Starting point is 00:02:11 We'll also post them on our Twitter feed, which is now X. And if you don't follow us on X, you should. And if you like to email me, just be nice. ladies and gentlemen, it's the Trump moment. And today, the president affected the market in a negative fashion. Let me explain. There has been talk about tariffs. Tariffs are basically a charge that a country will charge another country's products
Starting point is 00:02:53 that are coming in to the said country, a certain percentage. The reason why a country does that, it's for several reasons. Number one, say the first country is dumping, too much product and too cheap. It hurts that other country, so they put tariffs on it. That means the price of those products costs more and enables the, let's say it's us to be more competitive. Also, what would be another reason to affect change? Part of President Trump tariffs on Mexico is enough of this crap at the border.
Starting point is 00:03:41 Stop letting people in. Stop letting them pass through. So he's talking about immigration. Canada, I'm not exactly sure. China, he's got a myriad of things he is dealing with. But I want to explain to you something because what you need to know, because you keep hearing, they pay for the tariffs. If Canada sells a widget to us and Walmart buys it, we keep hearing that Canada pays the tariffs. You can't be any farther from the truth.
Starting point is 00:04:28 Walmart, if they were buying that widget, and it's a 25%, and it costs five bucks, it's now going to be six and a quarter because of that tariff. It is at that point in time, Walmart decides whether they will pass it on to the consumer. All of it, none of it, some of it. so when you hear the country that exports the goods to the United States pays for it no it's the country that is ordering the import I was reading and this is very easy to explain
Starting point is 00:05:15 say you bring back a few cases of Kianti Classico from your vacation in Italy when you declare those items to customs, you're the one who's charged import duties, not the vineyard in Tuscany with whom you settled up when you paid for the wine. That's all. The ultimate consumer is going to bear the additional cost of the tariffs. You need to know that. So what happened today, there has been talk of tariffs. And we'll let you disallowed. side if they're good or not. I know some very respectable people that are saying they're a good. We disagree. Anyway, the rumor has been that the tariffs were being put off until March 1st in order
Starting point is 00:06:18 to have discussions with these countries. It was reported that today. We were having another good day in the market. The stock market was doing just fine, led by a pretty darn strong NASDAQ. And then the young lady who is now the press secretary, who by the way, is fantastic. Fantastic. She said the report was wrong. The tariffs go on tomorrow. 25% Mexico and Canada, 10% China.
Starting point is 00:07:01 Now let me explain. and Canada are two biggest trading partners. Canada is the number two GDP country in the world behind us. The NASDAQ today, which was at one time hit 1969, closed at 1967, dropped 342 points from the highs. And by the way, it all started when the press secretary said, no, not March 1st, February 1st, which will be tomorrow. That's the story of today. Will this continue? I have absolutely no darn clue. Will he change his mind?
Starting point is 00:07:52 I definitely do not have any clue. Do I think the president is watching the markets? hell yeah and late in the day at 4 o'clock President Trump was quoted as saying nothing Canada, Mexico and China can do now to forestall tariffs starting February 1 and possible we can
Starting point is 00:08:13 even increase the tariff rate he also noted that oil and gas tariffs to be imposed by February 18th huh ladies and gentlemen we've had tariffs. We've had them. We'll see how it goes. Now, some good news on that. You know who Tom Holman is, right? He is the borders are. You know, the borders are like Kamala Harris was and they
Starting point is 00:08:50 said she wasn't. He is meeting with Canadian officials, senior Canadian officials, to discuss, discuss no discuss fentanyl and immigration in hopes of staving off the tariffs so maybe we walk in Monday and the market gaps back up again because everything has changed now I will tell you I've been reading up on these things and I'm trying to figure out what are they going to tariff I'm not even sure at this point. I've read eight different things. So I'm not even going to mention what. I'm not even going to mention what. I don't know exactly what they're looking to tariff. I'm just letting you know that's what did the trick today. I will tell you that again, the NASDAQ really wanted to go higher. And by the end of the day, just got a little bit kicked in the teeth.
Starting point is 00:09:54 So the Dow finished down 337, the S&P down 30, the NASDAQ 54, which is not a big deal, but when it was up, I think, what I say, about 300? Let me get that right. Well, I got you, if you don't mind. When it hit, it was 1922, hit for 300 points. But at the high today, we were 19969, 300. So up about 290. That was a real nice day. We'll see what happens over the weekend.
Starting point is 00:10:31 I am not a tariff guy. I don't believe in them. Why? Because you don't know what the other side's going to end up doing. Now, I do believe the president knows that we are much bigger than Canada and Mexico, but then not when it comes to trade. Let's see what happens. With China, it's a 10% tariff, and I can tell you that China stocks have been acting well in the last week.
Starting point is 00:11:06 Guess what happened to the China stocks today? They got whacked. So one of those days, as I have said to you again, we do this without agenda, ulterior motive, or bias. We don't care who's running the show. Today, there was a negative effect off of all this news, and I will see. State for the record, I am hoping they back away. We'll see what happens. It's a long weekend.
Starting point is 00:11:39 Up next, the market wrap. Movers of the day, news of the day, whatever else today. I'm Gary. This is the one only Investor's Edge. I recently sat down with IBM's chairman and CEO, Arvin Krishna. And I asked him, how can companies use AI to its fullest potential to create smarter business. My one advice to them, pick areas you can scale.
Starting point is 00:13:22 Don't pick the shiny little toys on the side. For example, if anybody has more than 10% of what they had for customer service 10 years ago, they're already five years behind it. If anybody is not using AI to make their developers who write software 30% more productive today, with the goal of being 70% more productive. Yeah. So we are not asking our clients to be the first experiment on it. We say, you can leverage what we did.
Starting point is 00:13:58 We're happy to bring out all our learnings, including what needs to change in the process, because the biggest change is not technology, is getting people to accept that there's a different way to do things. The last bastion of quality programming. With Gary Coltbaum. It doesn't get better than this. Welcome once again to Investors Edge.
Starting point is 00:16:20 By the way, through the break, I'm looking to see what they're looking to tariff. I'm not really finding that. I saw three different ones that completely were against each other. So I don't know. And maybe what you want to do this week and just spend five minutes on what are tariffs, who pays for them? What's happened in the past? How do they work? Why?
Starting point is 00:16:48 But I gave you a good roundabout way. I think they are somewhat of a good negotiation. tool, but I wouldn't start with them. We'll see how it plays out. Let's segue. We did a little market. Let's segue. Yesterday, we gave you what we thought was a duh comment.
Starting point is 00:17:13 We said to you that we, you know, have studied aviation and things like that. And there was no doubt in our mind that this tragic crash, was because of what happened in the tower. We're finding out that they only had one person handling the helicopters and the airplanes. And in case you don't know, it's a very busy corridor except at night, it's less so, but the amount of lights,
Starting point is 00:17:46 when you go look at the video, look at the amount of lights, and not just lights, but lights blinking. So very, very tough. The jet was seconds away from landing. Man. And I watched interviews. You know, Nancy Kerrigan, she's the one great skater.
Starting point is 00:18:13 I don't know if she won the gold or not, but great skater. And she's part of this Boston skating group. And she was interviewed and just crying her tears out because she knew all these young men and women. Just very tough to watch. I did the whole dissertation yesterday on it. Guess what they're doing now at Reagan National? Something you would think logically, and we talk logic here, there's going to be no more helicopters in that airspace.
Starting point is 00:18:52 And again, it comes back to what is a helicopter doing in the glide path of a plane landing, whether it was at the right level or not? Just sheer insanity, if you ask me. Just my opinion. News. Let's cover a few things today that are of imports on some important names. Apple. So we looked at the numbers last night and were like, oh, it's going to gap up all that.
Starting point is 00:19:29 Really? Apple today at the open was up $10, which is like $150 billion. million dollars of market cap, which is, wow. It finished down $2. So they sold that off. And remember, when you open up big and you're sold off, remember the physicality of that. That are big institutions selling stock into strength and telling you in and around those levels, it's going to be tough to get through. That's what happened with Apple today. they're still Apple but just letting you know that was a little bit of import to me
Starting point is 00:20:16 I want to mention Decker's strong apparel stock Ugs got young today if I can read this right to the tune of $45 yep down to one
Starting point is 00:20:42 78, and that's cracked. And we're just watching, as the market weakened today, is there anything else that cracked answer is? Don't know just yet, but I just noticed that something called Boot Barn and Apparel on their earnings. Remember, we watch earnings like a hawk now, especially the reactions. That's another one that got hit. So we're going to be watching those areas. It was just a tough day when all was said and done.
Starting point is 00:21:16 And what we're going to be doing going forward, let's see. Symbol Team, Royal Caribbean, which was down eight bucks today. Didn't see any news except it's extended. We're going to be watching that one. We're going to be watching Celestica. Not so sure I'm going to be watching IBM because, I'm not buying a company with no growth. I'm not sure I'm going to be watching Starbucks.
Starting point is 00:21:47 I'm not buying a company with that. Their comps are down 4% and their earnings are down 23, regardless whether it goes higher. But we are paying attention to this earning season. Where are the strong reactions? And what they'll tend to do, let's say the market continues to pull in some. Let's say that happens.
Starting point is 00:22:08 They will hold up best. And when the market gets relief, stops going down, stops correcting, they just lead out of there. Today, market by the end of the day took most everything down. That's okay for this second. The banks were down today, but they've had a good move and it's okay to have pullback days. The semis were strong. Here's another note today. The socks hit 5161 today, closed at 5,015, 146 point move to the downside from the high.
Starting point is 00:22:55 And what happened there? And I'm studying closely, NVIDIA. If I got this right, closed down today, four and a half bucks after being up a few dollars. and finished at the low of the day and finished below the 200-day moving average. That is to be watched very closely. You know, all the great talk about artificial intelligence this week, terrific. But one of the things that is not being brought up by the many is there's a lot of companies coming out with their own AI crap.
Starting point is 00:23:40 The word competition is coming to the four. and that's to be watched. Just letting you know. A move below NVIDIA. Well, first off, it could not get back above support, that resistance that used to be support. A break below 116, troublesome. And it's down from 153, by the way,
Starting point is 00:24:09 just about three weeks ago when I got stopped out. we had a very good year with NVIDIA 24, our last foray into it. We got stopped out. That happens. What can I tell you? Meta, another gap, we're going to be all over. Netflix. Pay attention.
Starting point is 00:24:34 We'll be telling you. Up next. Lots more. News of the day. This is the one only investor's edge. Hello, hello. I'm Malcolm Gladwell, host of the podcast Smart Talks with IBM. I recently sat down with IBM's chairman and CEO, Arvin Krishna.

Starting point is 00:28:01 With Gary Coltbaum. It comes highly recommended. You're going to feel better if you talk to him. By the way, one more thing on tariff. yields can potentially go higher interest rates can potentially go higher because of them to account for them if things get out of hand we're just letting you know if i was to put it in one sentence i think they're playing with fire i think they're playing with fire i think they're playing with fire i think they have convinced themselves
Starting point is 00:28:55 that in 18, when they did all these tariffs, the end of the world was not at hand. Okay. Do remember that the farmers lost a ton of money because of the tariffs, and Trump took our taxpayer dollars and paid them off. I want you to remember that. Remember, we do this without any bias, any agenda, any ulterior motive. We want good policy Remember what we've said to you here
Starting point is 00:29:33 Tax is low Regulations not onerous You got that Logical policy No open borders And get out of the way There's not much a president needs to do If they just do those things
Starting point is 00:30:00 Oh yes and Cut the size of government down, which I think they are doing. I'm not sure tariffs fit well into that, but we'll keep our fingers crossed. What else? We'll segue a little bit here. I got sent something called from somebody,
Starting point is 00:30:26 my reflection of the California wildfires. 100 pictures of Altadena and Pacific Palisades. Holy crap. You know, I've seen some pictures, but these are about 100 pictures destroyed. And there was no bias. Big, small, churches, schools, temples,
Starting point is 00:31:03 restaurants, shopping centers, you name it. It was taken out. It is going to take a long while. to get this fixed up. Maui, and I told you, I was just there, what, about three months ago, you can't even get into Lahaina. You can't make the turn that takes you to Lahaina. And it's been like three years, and they're still moving stuff away, not building stuff.
Starting point is 00:31:39 And I'll just make that statement and not say anything else, because I don't know what drives the bus around I do know they've raised a lot of money and let's hope they get it done. Man, I'm looking at these pictures right now. Whoa. Whoa. I'll say one more time. Whoa. Stunning, stunning, stunning, stunning.
Starting point is 00:32:13 I mentioned earlier about these stocks that have gaped to the upside. Let me just explain a little lesson time from Gary. Through the years, we have gone through study after study that if a stock closed at 100 yesterday and today opens at 120, and we're not talking about a buyout, we're not even talking about a news event. we're talking about earnings reports. Those things you have to watch. And sometimes they open up at 120, and the next day it's 125,
Starting point is 00:33:01 next day it's 130, and it's out of here. I would suggest a good half the time, it'll open up at 120, and then for three weeks, trade between 115 and 120. And every time it hits 115, 15 can't go any lower.
Starting point is 00:33:22 Anytime it hits 120, can't go any higher. What do you do? The break above 120, that's your clue. That's the things we look for. I will tell you there are two names where we failed in the last six months. One is Palantir because number one in September. you had a gap to the upside. I'm actually going back to it as I speak.
Starting point is 00:34:00 You actually had one. I've got to get this right. You know, I hate when things go slow. So Palantir, you had a couple of gaps on earnings reports, and we just didn't play it. You had one. Here's the deal. date 9-9 that would have been number one and I did not play that was not necessarily an earnings
Starting point is 00:34:39 report but that was a big report on what they were doing but then another earnings report was on 115 and I knew the market was better the market the trend changed And on 115, we just didn't do because it was a little bit extended already. And on 116, well, it closed at 51 on 115, 116, it was already 55. And at that point, two extended. And then two days later, 58. And then it's on its way. The other one, which should have been easier for me, and I just read it,
Starting point is 00:35:21 gapped up big, huge, on October 30th. And it did one of those little dipsy doodles. It pulled back for four days. And then just five days later on the fifth, the pullback was bought up, moved above range the next day. That was at $125. It was 155 like three weeks later. And to say the least, in our little book,
Starting point is 00:36:01 that we write notes to ourselves, there's a few little four-letter words I wrote to myself on both those names to make sure the next time I just do it, like the Nike little thing of a bob. So just letting you know that's what we concentrate on and actually when stocks are gaping up in a weak market
Starting point is 00:36:24 and can't get going because the market is weak. normally as soon as the market stops being weak they really get going so right now earning season we already mentioned some of the names and again we typically will not play crappy earnings regardless we'll just miss those in the case of the names we just mentioned strong sales growth strong earnings growth and we have a lot more earnings to come next week
Starting point is 00:37:00 in fact I think Palantir reports next week I believe Amazon I believe Google that'll be the last of the biggies but I think we have some candidates going into the next two three months
Starting point is 00:37:18 but as always you need a cooperative market and today the market was roughed up but I repeat, if by chance over the weekend those tariffs are rolled back, I will gap up to 300 points on Monday. NASDAQ will be up 150. And that's what we're dealing with now. Unfortunately, and by the way, that was not a dig at the president.
Starting point is 00:37:49 We're just stating facts. Anything we're saying here, there's no politics involved. It is purely market and purely investment. stated by the facts of what happened today and the timing of it now can bull markets turn into bear markets because yes when you're dealing with a person who runs a 30 trillion dollar economy it matters up next what else we got this is the one only investors edge. Hello, hello.
Starting point is 00:38:53 I'm Malcolm Gladwell, host of Smart Talks with IBM. I recently spoke with IBM's new director of research, Jake Mbata. We discussed his vision for the future of quantum computing. At IBM research, what we always do is answer what is the future of computing. Whether it's coming up with new algorithms,
Starting point is 00:39:13 coming up with better AI, coming up with quantum, or coming up with just how do different accelerators go together. It's our DNA to answer the question of what is the future. Isn't it a perfect problem for IBM because you kind of need to have a legacy of building stuff? Yes. Building actual physical machines. Yeah, it's why I came to IBM.
Starting point is 00:39:35 I wanted the experience, the culture of building hard things that others have not done before. Where do you imagine we are in the timeline of this technology? There will come a point when it will mature. Right? My cell phone is a mature technology at this point. How far are we from that point with quantum? By 2029, we'll build the first fault-tolerant quantum computer. That is one that can run a very, very large, large problem.

Starting point is 00:42:24 And I got to tell you, we're going to give you out a pick. We'll do it later in the week. Next week, there really is a conundrum. I've always believed in the past. Until somebody loses, you go with them. I feel like Philadelphia is really destined this year. And Sequin. And also fundamentally, you got this two-sum of Hertz and Sequin.
Starting point is 00:42:56 And if Casey tries to play the run too much, Hertz has some great receivers. And they do have a great line. But Kansas City just wins. They just win. And I think this is for a three-peat. That's never happened, right? And of course, Kansas City has the refs.
Starting point is 00:43:19 They're in the tank. Don't tell me they're not. As of this second, I'm Philadelphia getting, what is it, a couple of points. Over under's 49. I'm an over guy. I was over on the two last games, and they both went over. I got to figure it's an over. But we'll give you the official late next.
Starting point is 00:43:44 week if it's okay with you. It's going to be one heck of a game. And if KC wins, you know how amazing that is? You know how tough it is to get to the Super Bowl? It is not easy. The injuries, Detroit, I think, would have won the Super Bowl this year if they didn't have all those injuries. Their whole defense was gone. So as of this second, I'm still over. But I'm leaning Philadelphia. for you, but I got to tell you that can change. It's that nip and tuck. Dang. Dang. What else is going on? I think my guess, I don't think Tulsi Gabbard makes it on the vote. I think Cash Patel is going to be close, but I think he'll make it. And it may be a 50-50. and I think Kennedy, who I'm against,
Starting point is 00:44:59 nothing personal. I think he probably makes it. And let's hope all his bull crap from the past does not come to the fore again. And let me state for the record, some of his beliefs are bull crap. But I do like the fact about what he says on food.
Starting point is 00:45:24 I agree. Did you read the story about fruit loops in other countries don't have certain chemicals, but they're here, and the chemicals are not that good. This is true. Do you know in Italy, people can eat a certain amount of pasta in Italy, and the same amount of pasta here, gain 20 pounds here and not a pound there. So, yeah, I think that can be looked at. But I don't want to hear them telling us what we have to do. Just remember the Republican Party has always been about let be, you know?
Starting point is 00:46:04 We'll see how it plays out. We'll know a lot more in the next week. But I repeat, lower taxes, less regulations, no onerous regulations, get the border under control, get the government under control, and get out of our way. will do great things. The amount of technological advancements and medical breakthroughs is gargantuan, which takes me to Vertex Pharmaceuticals, which was up $23 today. Just letting you know, this one's a good one. Vertex Pharmaceuticals has a drug, Jornavex that's being called.
Starting point is 00:47:08 It's a non-opioid pain killer. That's huge. It doesn't work on the reward centers of the brain that lead to addiction. That is huge. Now the price is high, but it comes down. That's a huge advancement. Look at what's going on with this OZempic, though as I, have told you if you ever get off of it, if you don't change your lifestyle, you're going
Starting point is 00:47:41 to gain the weight right back. That's why diets don't work. Once you get off the diet, you're done. You're toast. But this is what we mean by, just get out of our way. And I expect more great things going forward. Many more. Another part of the equation today that I loved out of this administration, they are working on schools. The ability to choose a school. Vouchers. If you're in a school that sucks and your son or daughter is not being taught the way they should be in order to become great, you should have a right to choose.
Starting point is 00:48:32 What a logical concept that is. only available in certain venues or if you got the money for private schools. So they're all over that. I love that. I took my sons out of regular school, one of them in elementary school. The kids broke his leg. And we went to the principal and he didn't, like, didn't even give a crap. See ya.
Starting point is 00:49:05 My other son went to a high school where every day there were five. and drug bus took them out. Put them in private school. Fantastic. And I shouldn't have had to. Cost some bucks. I think in a lot of ways we're heading the right direction. We'll keep you informed.
