Starting point is 00:00:31 Investor's Edge with Gary Coltbaum. Straight talk about you and your money. Now from the BizTalk Studios, here is Gary Cultbaum. And welcome once again to Investors Edge. I'm Gary Colbom, your host. Thanks for being with us today. Glad you here, ladies and gentlemen, happy that you are listening. It is, I believe, Friday.
Starting point is 00:00:52 Yeah, good. Friday. That's January 24th, 2025. Yeah. Hope you having a good day. hope you have a good weekend. I am actually not traveling this weekend. That is a rarity right now. Actually going to kick back. You know what I got going this weekend? Training. I will be doing seven hours of inclined trainer, jogging, or fast walking tonight and throughout the weekend.
Starting point is 00:01:29 I've already designated times that I'll be doing it. I'll be an hour and a half during the first football game, Division Championship or the AFC, and an hour and a half during the second game. You break it up. I'll be doing a bunch in the morning tomorrow and the afternoon. I'm at minimum seven hours. I will be doing 10 sets of every body part but 20 sets
Starting point is 00:01:59 of legs because that's the big thing as you get older you got to have strong legs so that's going to be the weekend and my best advice for all you get off your you know what get off the alcohol eat well train and i don't mean workout but train and get yourself in shape because i got news for you it gets tougher as you age that's all i can tell you that is your athletic segment of the show today. And by the way, when I say body parts, I just do the normal stuff, the bench press, the bicep curls, the tricep extensions, the leg extensions and squats, shoulder presses, trap shrugs, you know, the back pull downs in front and behind. I do the simplistic stuff. It's not that hard. And by the way, the training sessions take
Starting point is 00:02:59 30 to 40 minutes of my day. It's easy stuff. Anyway, anybody want any info on what I do? You can email me. Next, introductions. I'm Gary Culpom. This is Investor's Edge. Serious talk on everything that affects you,
Starting point is 00:03:18 the markets, the economy, your job, your industry, the new president and his administration and his proposals. The last president and his nightmarish proposals. and everything else that comes to mind. And we will cover it all with no agenda, ulterior motive, or bias. We are not, R, we are not D. We are A, American. And we just care about you, not them.
Starting point is 00:03:46 And we just hope they do the right thing. Simple is that. Okay. And if you do not get this radio show in your city, we'll post it at garyk.com. We'll also post it on our Twitter feed, which is now X. And if you don't follow us on X, you should. and we'll also post it on those podcast apps.
Starting point is 00:04:04 And may I state for the record, I think we're probably going to put the radio show on YouTube. We'll let you know. Okay, it's the Trump moment. As you know, every day now, we're doing the Trump moment, the good, the bad, the indifferent. First and foremost, I'm going to talk about the talk. He was out today proposing, not,
Starting point is 00:04:31 not saying we're going to, but kind of sort of putting it out there that they're going to get rid of FEMA. So let me be clear about this. They're not getting rid of FEMA. Just letting you know. He said something about the states and this and that. I got news for you. I've been in hurricanes. FEMA does a great job.
Starting point is 00:04:55 But I do believe under Biden they were politicized because Biden was the worst president ever. ever by far politicized everything and so glad he is gone and let's hope the new president politicizes nothing next president trump's in north carolina today i could be wrong i i think Biden may have gone to north carolina but just dropped the dead in its tracks and i have been watching how the North Carolinians that were hit with that hurricane and lost their homes, they've been left for dead. The media hasn't reported on it. Nothing. Donald Trump president went there today.
Starting point is 00:05:41 Good on him. That is being a leader. And I believe he's in the midst of going to California to check out what's going on there to fix up California. And wouldn't it be interesting if he earns. instead of the wrath of Californians, the applause of Californians for getting front and center to help getting back up
Starting point is 00:06:09 in those areas affected by the fires. And by the way, the latest is the worry about landslides because there's going to be big rain coming in. I'm just thinking to myself, okay, fires and then landslides. Am I moving back to that place?
Starting point is 00:06:33 You know, I call myself Mr. Logic. Fires destroy my home, and now landslides are coming down to cover things up. Am I moving back there? I'm not so sure. Next, I love, love what they're doing on immigration. Remember, we love immigrants. We think they have made this country throughout the decades, but it's got to be controlled. And also, you've got to root out those that came in and are criminals.
Starting point is 00:07:16 And all I can tell you, I was watching one of the lead people for the administration and immigration. And these are pretty much quotes, if you commit crimes, you're going to jail. Sexual predators are going to jail. Criminal gang members are going to jail. Child traffickers and smugglers and endangering children. going to jail, 500,000 children were trafficked under Biden. And I'm thinking to myself, did I hear Biden once say anything like that in his four years ever? No, because he wanted open borders. And for the life of me, I don't know why. He's a weird dude, and I'm glad he's
Starting point is 00:07:55 out of here. Anyway, this is the way it's supposed to be. The rule of law, that's the way it's supposed to be the rule of law. If you commit crimes, you're going to do the time. You traffic children, you're dead. If you smuggle and endanger children, you're dead. If you're a gang member and you are raiding the county or city and doing all kinds of criminal activities, you're gone. Simple as when I say dead, that means you're gone. And that's what they're doing. They are rounding these suckers up. They are vetting them and they are gone. This is great news. This is protecting the citizenry. The number one job of a government in any city, state, county, or the country. Number one job is defend the citizenry. And did you hear one time in four years Joe Biden talk about doing
Starting point is 00:08:54 something about crime? What a concept. Well done on President Trump. And that is the Trump moment. And we'll keep covering it, good or bad or indifferent. Again, with no agenda, ulterior motive or bias. We just want good policy. And that policy should be defend the citizenry. Keep your taxes low. Keep regulations are fine but not onerous.
Starting point is 00:09:28 And streamline the freaking government that is so, God, is it out of control. brought to you by the last few. And by the way, part of that was Trump in his first time. And we'll report on that as it goes. And I don't think it's going to be easy. Do you know the left is already suing Doge? Doge wants to make government more efficient and effective, and the left is suing them.
Starting point is 00:09:58 They should be applauding them. It's amazing to watch. And that is all. We segue now. Someone got mad at me today. Somebody who watched me on TV got mad at me today because I said on TV, I just want to let you know in the last bare market, Bitcoin dropped 75%. They got mad at me because I stated a fact.
Starting point is 00:10:29 Isn't that amazing? Mad at me. Sent me nasty. because I just stated that it dropped 75%, just the fact. And just be careful. And I said on TV, no sales, no earnings. And you never know when there's been 32,000 coins that came out that went to zero. So we're going to pay attention to price.
Starting point is 00:10:56 And if it keeps going up, we're going to let you know. If it starts to go down and breakdown, we'll let you know. Somebody got mad. Wow. I don't think that's meaningful to it, but wow. Up next, full market wrap. Lots more. This is the one only Investors Edge. I'm Malcolm Gladwell, host of Smart Talks with IBM. I recently spoke with IBM's new director of research, Jake Embatta. We discussed his vision for the future of quantum computing. At IBM research, what we always do is answer what is the
Starting point is 00:12:51 future of computing, whether it's coming up with new algorithms, coming up with better AI, coming up with quantum, or coming up with just how do different accelerators go together. It's our DNA to answer the question of what is the future. Isn't it a perfect problem for IBM because you kind of need to have a legacy of building stuff? Yes. Building actual physical machines. Yeah, it's why I came to IBM. I wanted the experience, the culture of building hard things that others have not done before.
Starting point is 00:13:26 Where do you imagine we are in the timeline of this technology? There will come a point when it will mature. Right? My cell phone is a mature technology at this point. How far are we from that point with Conta? By 2029, we'll build the first fault-tolerant quantum computer. That is one that can run a very, very, very, very. large, large problem.
Starting point is 00:13:48 To learn how IBM is building the future of computing, visit IBM.com slash quantum. Want to earn extra income for your business? Starting point is 00:15:11 Investors Edge. The last bastion of quality programming. With Gary Coltbaum. It doesn't get better than this. All right, somewhat of an icky day, but we would do for an icky day. And there's nothing wrong with an icky day. In fact, I told my peeps today, boy, we really hope we get some pullbacks here because there are things we really want, but we don't want them on the up.
Starting point is 00:15:48 We want them on the pullback. And they obliged us to a certain extent today. But compared to the move off of last Monday, it was a... They fly on an elephant's rear. The Dow was down 140. I will tell you, it was down 2.30 with like 10 minutes to go, so they bounced at 90 into the close. And in the Dow today, well, American Express on its earnings was down about 13,
Starting point is 00:16:19 but only finished down four and three quarters. And they ramped it, a part of that ramp into the close. Amgen down three and change, Boeing down two and two. change, Honeywell down five and change, Goldman Sachs down two, that's had a nice move, Nvidia down five. And since it's the number one stock pretty well, yeah, about close the number one stock asked about, it has been teasing a big move and it's failed every time. Every time it gets to that 150, 152 area. It got to 149 today and turning tail closed at 142 and change. And it's just range bound back and forth, bouncing like a ping pong up and down.
Starting point is 00:17:08 On the upside, nothing to really talk about on the upside. S&P down 17, NASDAQ 99 to the downside, NASDAQ 100 down 126, and a juicy 102 on the semis. And of course, that's Nvidia. And I'm just noticing in the semis, listen carefully, because they had a nice move up. But they had a little gap to the downside yesterday and not a good day today. We'll let you know. I'm going to call it, I'm agnostic on it right now. But again, as I said at the outset on this, rather have pullbacks right now.
Starting point is 00:17:49 And we'll see where it takes us. And we think we probably started a little bit that today. Transport's down 34. I mentioned the semis. Advanced declines weren't that bad. today. Small and mid were down a little bit, no biggie. On the week, but on the week. On the week. NASDAQ was up 1.6. The Dow was up two. The S&P 500, 1.7. And I'm not really complaining, except, you know, we watch these indicators of bullish sentiment. I got to tell you,
Starting point is 00:18:32 It went almost coast to coast in a few days, bearish sentiment to bullish sentiment. I don't think it's that big of a deal yet. We'll see. Of note, and let me be clear about this, this coming week, Tuesday, Boeing, GM, Royal Caribbean, SAP. ASML Holdings, Brinker International, Strong Restaurant, Corning, Flextronics, T-Mobile, UBS.
Starting point is 00:19:14 How about Wednesday after the close? Let me make sure that. Before the open, before the open, after the close, IBM, Lamb Research. You ready for this trifecta? Facebook meta, which actually hit a new high today. Microsoft, Tesla, all in one afternoon. That is three of the big eight. Also United Rentals, Western Digital. By the way, IBM's in the Dow. Microsoft's in the Dow. Alibaba, Qualcomm, SkyWork Solutions.
Starting point is 00:19:55 How about Thursday before the Open? Blackstone, Caterpillar in the Dow. and I got to tell you, Caterpillar and Deer romped over the last nine days. Mastercard, Northrop Grumman, Parker Hanofim, UPS, tractor supply. They have nice tractors there. How about after the close on Thursday? Apple. You've heard of them, right?
Starting point is 00:20:19 Estimates are 235 versus 218. So estimates are 17 cents on 218. What is that? About 8% earnings growth. and they usually beat, so there'll probably be low teens. Decker's, KLA 10 Cor, Intel, Visa in the Dow. I've got Amazon, it says unspecified, believe it or not. How is Amazon unspecified about when they're reporting earnings?
Starting point is 00:20:47 That's weird. So Amazon hasn't stated yet. Let me see if I can pull that up in real time here. Amazon, unconfirmed, January 30th. That would be that Thursday of next week. So just letting you know, we're loaded for next Thursday. And what we'll do is pay attention to reactions. This week, we had Twilio up 22 bucks today as they raise their numbers.
Starting point is 00:21:23 Interactive brokers gapped up on their earnings. We're paying attention that Union Pacific good reaction on earnings. GE, though it gapped up and has fallen back already. We look for that also. But sticking out, for me, still a little bit narrow, we'll see. Other things to note, gold's back up near the highs, quietly, slowly back near the highs. GLD, go take a look. The gold miners have been better, but continue to way underperform.
Starting point is 00:22:04 China, I want to bring that up. I think it's held four-month support. That's an overall for China, not each name. Whether or not it gets going again, I don't know, but overnight China put something out to the extent of take this and buy up stocks. Seriously, it was an edict from the government, and it reacted. Now, I can tell you that first move in China was September, went straight up Eiffel Tower, came down, tried to move in November, failed, try to move in December, failed, came back, tested those lows the third time, looks like it's holding. We'll let you know. the problem is if it's just government moving the numbers it's a problem they reported GDP of 5
Starting point is 00:23:04 percent it used to be always 7 percent i don't believe their numbers just like i don't believe the numbers that came come out of the united states oh come on gary in case you don't know and you can go look it up over the last 25 years our government has changed the formula inflation to make it lower than it used to be and has changed the formula on GDP to make it higher than it used to be. Now you tell me. You tell me. Up next, what else on the markets? And the news of the day. I'm Gary. This is the one that only investors edge. Hello, hello. I'm Malcolm Gladwell, host of the podcast Smart Talks with IBM. I recently sat down with IBM's chairman and CEO, Arvin Krishna. And I asked him, how can companies you
Starting point is 00:24:14 use AI to its fullest potential to create smarter business. My one advice to them, pick areas you can scale. Don't pick the shiny little toys on the side. For example. If anybody has more than 10% of what they had for customer service 10 years ago, they're already five years behind it. If anybody is not using AI to make their developers, who write software 30% more productive today
Starting point is 00:24:47 with the goal of being 70% more productive. Yeah. Wow. So we are not asking our clients to be the first experiment on it. We say, you can leverage what we did. We're happy to bring out all our learnings, including what needs to change in the process, because the biggest change is not technology,
Starting point is 00:25:05 is getting people to accept that there's a different way to do things. To listen to the full conversation, visit IBM.com slash Smart Talks. Starting point is 00:26:22 We're listening to. America is talking. Investors Edge. He's got to be pleased with that. The crowd is just on his feet here. He's a Cinderella boy. With Gary Colbomb. It comes highly recommended.
Starting point is 00:26:40 You're going to feel better if you talk to him. So, we got an email from somebody with a question that I thought it was pertinent to bring up about this big announcement this week from Oracle. what is it Stargate, Oracle, SoftBank, the chat GBT guy, and they're talking big numbers. They're talking, I won't call them outrageous numbers, but they are big numbers about how much they're going to spend. I believe today Facebook or meta announced I'll read it to you
Starting point is 00:27:38 let's see meta I had it somewhere yes planning to invest 60 to 65 billion in capital expenditures this year while also growing its AI
Starting point is 00:27:56 team significantly AI being artificial intelligence. Huh. And some numbers of 600 billion and 500 billion and 400 billion and 400 billion. And I watched the Larry Ellison from Oracle interview again talking about how this could cure cancer, that artificial intelligence is going to be able to do this, that, and the other thing on cancer. and it can provide a vaccine for cancer. And I'm always thinking to myself, as a skeptic, often,
Starting point is 00:28:44 because very often these numbers are bandied about and they never come through, and not even close. I do remember numbers, crazy numbers about the internet in 99. If all of this is true, where is it today? It's just a question. Maybe it's a stupid question, but I know they're saying, oh, it's going to take time and all that. But if they're so genius and so smart and they're so sure of themselves, I hope they're right. Because every one of us have been touched by cancer, in families and friends.
Starting point is 00:29:45 And the great news is, in the last couple of decades, without a doubt, people, people who used to live a year or two after getting certain cancers are living five years and 10 years and 20 are living a whole life. I think I said to yes, a multiple myeloma. My uncle contracted it many years ago, I think within a year. And now I hear 10 years, if not more. Of course, it depends on if you catch it quick and things like that. There's definitely variables. So we had, back on the markets, we had this really big reaction. Oracle was a dead stock. Dead. And it went from 160 to a high of 192 on this news. That's a lot of cake. That's about 30, a hundred billion
Starting point is 00:30:47 dollar move on what may come Microsoft has been a dead stock Microsoft went up from 428 to a high of 447 that's a big move for that stock that's 150 billion dollars of a move
Starting point is 00:31:13 and they're not even the head honcho top dog big cheese of the Stargate So the question is, was this a little bit too much? Well, we'll know in time. Duh. But just letting you know as somebody who's heard a lot of big numbers from a lot of people in the past, and we're not accusing them of lying or anything, but maybe themselves a little bit too excited,
Starting point is 00:31:49 well, we'll see. and vidia made a strong move for an invidia and has pretty much given it all back and we're told this is the lead dog or why did give it all back we'll see we'll keep our eyes on all of it and by the way we mentioned Oracle and Microsoft it's not just the AI thing obviously right there's a lot of the things going on with these companies I got some emails on the nuclear stuff. I got asked by somebody, Gary, you're a technician, so why don't you just buy the breakouts on some of these nuclear stocks? Well, because I am a technical fundamentalist and I'm not paying $5 billion for a company
Starting point is 00:32:40 with no sales that came out with a SPAC. That's all. That's all. Why would I pay $5 billion for a company with no sales? which by the way, went up 60% this week. I'm not going to mention which one. It went up 60% this week. Up $15.77 to $41.82. It was $5 in September.
Starting point is 00:33:17 It's $41.82 today, and they still have no sales. Oh, but we'll see. That's where we always tell you, you get to decide. that's why we always tell you you got to pick your own poison you got to decide where you want to go with things and we are constantly showing our peeps stocks that went from one to ten and back to one I found a couple of China names that just did a round trip Iful not even Eiffel Tower Iful Tower with the space needle on top and then all the way back down to the sidewalk so it's just a matter of you just got to decide what boat you're going to get into and I will tell you
Starting point is 00:34:14 this most of these stocks come out of nowhere don't trade a lot and start at a few bucks very tough to catch that but again it's your money you get to decide we just like being a little bit of the voice of reason when a little froth and speculation is going on out there. And right now there's a lot of it. And the themes are nuclear, quantum computing, the space thing. That's what's robo-taxies companies with no sales. Here's one. Low-emission sidewalk delivery robots, company with no sales.
Starting point is 00:35:10 Was two bucks in July is $20 today. 1.1 billion market cap with no sales. And I got Newsfea. We really don't know how big this is going to be. Do you, you got that? I'm not so sure. But I'm open to anything, any and all out. comes. So just let you know how we think it's not exactly for everybody. We know people
Starting point is 00:35:48 that the VMO, thus said, I made 80% in the last two weeks on this. And you know what I emailed back? Terrific. Dinner on you. We're happy if you catch them. Just don't catch them the wrong way. Because as we have stated, too many times, if nothing changes, And these companies continue to have no sales. And we go into a bare market or a bare market for that area. Don't be the last one in. And you better be a trader. Simple as that.
Starting point is 00:36:33 Bond market on the stable side after pulling back here a little bit. The Fed couldn't care less. Oil prices, a little elevated but nice little pull back the last five days. At the pump, it's been going up. Oil stocks, there's some leadership there. Still a lot of lagging, but there's some leadership. Up next, real estate. This is the one only investor's edge.
Starting point is 00:37:29 Hello, hello, I'm Malcolm Gladwell, host of the podcast Smart Talks with IBM. I recently sat down with IBM's chairman and CEO, Arvin Krishna. Starting point is 00:41:00 I get a lot of that. It's weak. And there's worry about China. that they're just not selling well in a very big market. Simple as that. And keeps getting reported. Next week will be earnings. They will beat the estimate, as they always do.
Starting point is 00:41:25 But also the problem is, let's see, they do 120, 210, 295, they do 390 billion in revenues, almost 400 billion. It's very tough to grow like you used to. So it could be they are a product of their success. And we bought it in June on the big breakout, made some very good money in short order. And we bought it on the breakout again in December. And like a doofus,
Starting point is 00:41:54 I let it come back to almost where we bought it and got out fortunately. And right now it's lost all its relative strength. And there's new, you know, any news that comes out right now is about softness. We'll see. I got my son bought me and I watch and I'm still trying to figure the darn thing out. I'm going to go to an Apple store this weekend because I don't want my watch to ring when my phone rings.
Starting point is 00:42:23 That's number one. I can't figure it out. And then number two, when my watch is on, my phone stops ringing. It goes to voicemail. It's weirded out. and then it rang me the watch at 4 in the morning yesterday. What the hell is with that? So obviously I don't know what the hell I'm doing.
Starting point is 00:42:48 So I'm going to go in and hopefully they can help me out. Real estate. We're just letting you know. Basically we go on zillow and realtor.com and we look at a lot of Florida, a lot of Texas, a lot of Phoenix, Scottsdale, Vegas, California. and every now and then we'll just go around the country different areas. We're just letting you know, inventory in many cities has just skyrocketed.
Starting point is 00:43:25 And usually the end result of that is, A, people get fed up because they're not able to sell. There's nobody buying, so they just take it off. but B is the first person starts to lower prices. And if that still doesn't sell, well, and they stay down, well, the next person lowers price to match that person, knowing they're not going to be able to sell at a higher price if that person's already at a lower price. And then the third person. And then the fourth. And I can tell you, here in Central Florida,
Starting point is 00:44:09 I'm not going to mention which areas, but there are some areas where there's two, 300 homes being put up at a million bucks. That was 600,000 three years ago. And then six months later, it's not selling. So, all of a sudden, it's 950 and then 900. So I think there is a definitive process on. I'm not just talking about the high end here. there is a definitive process on of higher inventories in many areas starting to force down prices from fantasy prices. I've seen some $6 million homes that were $3 million three years ago and they think they're going to get six.
Starting point is 00:45:02 And maybe they will. But you know what's happening. before you know it it's 5-2 and then 4-8 and 4-5 so we'll let you know we'll see how it goes but supply and demand dictates the more inventory that comes out the more prices are going to come down
Starting point is 00:45:24 and of course it's different based on locale beach front waterfront golf front condo homes schools, what areas, but we're just letting you know,
Starting point is 00:45:49 I don't want to say across the board, but getting close, prices on their way down. And when you hear, I saw a real estate guy say, oh, the real estate prices were up 3.1% last year. Bull crap. Bull crap.
Starting point is 00:46:10 They're coming down. I'm also seeing builders offering 3% mortgages while mortgages are at 7%. I'm seeing builders offering free this, free that, added pool, added this, added that. They don't do that because they're generous,
Starting point is 00:46:34 they do that to attract. It's the same thing I said to you. It was it yesterday or the day before. All these card dealers now do zero percent financing for 72 months on a ton of electric vehicles. They do that because they ain't selling. And in case you don't know, go look at the price of electric vehicles where it was two years ago and where they are today. For that matter, go look where Rolex watches were two years ago and where they are today. Those prices have crashed. So we've had a lot of
Starting point is 00:47:14 fantasy land. And again, does not mean end of world. We're just letting you know the lay of the land as we see it. And by the way, this goes for homes, 300 and 400 and things like that. Obviously, they just come down less as far as a dollar
Starting point is 00:47:30 amount. But there's a lot of inventory of that also. Stay tuned. We're on it. In no way, shape, or form. And we didn't necessarily call a crash in 07, but we said, look out.
Starting point is 00:47:47 And you know what happened back then? We don't see that at this point in time. We don't see that, but we do think prices, it'd become more of a buyer's market going forward. Oh, and by the way, some of the worst acting stocks in the market are the home builders. And that's that. So you all have a great weekend.
Starting point is 00:48:11 Drive carefully. I'll report to you Monday on my, workouts, my training. And when you get home to like we do, quite simple. Make sure you hug your family.
