I'm Gary Coltbaum,
Starting point is 00:00:50 your host. A thanks of being with us today. Glad you here, ladies and gentlemen, happy that you are listening. It's April 3rd, 2003. Hope you had a good weekend. I did. I hung out with Bovvie Lenny and Rob my college buddies down in Bocca Raton Remember I told you
Starting point is 00:01:11 I hadn't seen them in ages and decide to get together and like the decades you don't see somebody for decades and it's like you saw him the day before it's amazing so I was down in a beautiful Bocca Raton, Florida
Starting point is 00:01:25 may I state for the record the driver's suck from West Palm down to Miami. That's all I could tell you. I was getting into five separate accidents if I didn't avoid. There was somebody just came right into my lane. Did not care. If I didn't see him and he was going like a hundred. And nobody's, do you know if police just parked their carcasses every two miles on I-95 from West Palm to Miami, they can fund everything with how many people they can give big tickets to. And if I tell you, I've never seen more people driving 100 miles an hour while there's a lot of cars on a highway,
Starting point is 00:02:17 they suck down in South Florida. And I'm here in Orlando, and there's some bad ones, but it's an every now and then thing. South Florida, I'm telling you, I'd avoid five separate accidents. And a couple of them would have been real bad accidents. Besides that, it was a good weekend. Ladies and gentlemen, news-driven day. I'm going to go through the news-driven day first. Then we'll do the market wrap, move as of the day, whatever else today.
Starting point is 00:02:49 Just letting you know when all said and done, I'm going to give you out some numbers on the market. One's a big number, but less than meets the eye except everything counts. And then the good side of it is what I'm going to tell you was down today, was actually the good side of the market. So news, it didn't affect anything today. Oil prices went up almost $5 today. A huge move. Saudi Arabia, these are all countries that are going to cut production, 500,000 barrels, Russia, 500,000, Iraq, 211, 111, United Arab Emirates, 144,000. Kuwait, 128, Kazakhstan, 78, Algeria 48, Oman 40. We're talking about 1.6 million barrels per day of cutting production.
Starting point is 00:03:43 And that's what did it. If it sticks, prices at the pump are going to go up markedly in the next two to three weeks, if not sooner. Just letting you know. Less oil, higher price. And that's a big Monsabal 1.6 million barrels per day. The biggest problem we have, if we had a president that was pro-logic, you know, pro-logic. This can be ameliorated. Notice the big word.
Starting point is 00:04:30 But we have a president that's not pro-logic and has done everything possible. everything possible that can hurt the consumer on oil prices. Now, one of the things he did was he cut down the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. You may go look that up to have an understanding of what that is. The problem is he's taken so much out of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve that there's not much more you can do. He should have been filling it up when prices will lower, but he did not. Certainly there'll be no announcement, no announcement of doing the right thing.
Starting point is 00:05:29 Production. Ain't going to happen. Ain't going to happen. And in case you don't know what the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is, it was established, I think, 50 years ago. and it's supposed to be in response to crisis a war. The president, Congress, they exert certain degrees of control over it. There's been nearly 40 releases since its inception. Gulf War, Hurricane Katrina, I think, oh, the pandemic, and now the Russia-Ukraine
Starting point is 00:06:13 more. But Biden has done it at an historical pace, so I'm not so sure what you can do there. So we're going to watch that closely. The good news is it did not affect the market today. It did affect some areas, though. Who's it going to affect? Airlines, of course. Cruise lines, of course. Truckers, of course. Travel related? Yeah. Guess what stocks didn't do so great today. just those areas. So that's number one in the news. Number two in the news, President Trump, we'll just repeat ourselves. This whole indictment is a load of bull crap. And just remember, we don't like the guy. We don't want him to be president again. We want him going back to his golf course. We are no fan of his. We've never met him personally, but the things he shows of his
Starting point is 00:07:19 person pretty much disgust me. But at the same time, we are fair. We are unbiased here. This is a load of bull crap. And this is even before we've seen the indictments. And he may be guilty of things. we're just letting you know we're comparing it to political circles the amount of crimes being committed by our politicians we can fill a couple encyclopedias with not only is there no indictments there's not even any investigations that's number one number two and this is simplistic if if Donald Trump was a favored politician there would not even be an investigation This is laughable. And I say that, let me repeat. They may come out with indictments that he's guilty of. I'm just letting you know in D.C. They don't indict squat of people that are favored.
Starting point is 00:08:30 You got that? Criminal activity is called nothing. To even get an ethics violation in D.C., you got to do some bad stuff so just letting you know that's he's in new york now and that's tomorrow and as usual trump has mishandled this whole thing as usual he's a dope but it's it's bull crap
Starting point is 00:09:00 and i say that to each and every one of you and you all know i can't stand the guy i have no bias no agenda no ulterior motive except to tell you the truth Ilhan Omar took almost $3 million of our campaign funds and siphon them off to her husband's business. That's not illegal? Really?
Starting point is 00:09:34 Elizabeth Warren committed fraud, claimed American Indian heritage to get money in status. That's fraud. Not illegal? Nancy Pelosi, the greatest insider trader of all time. No? No? No? So anyway, that'll be tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:10:00 The good news is I'm hearing. There's no perp walk. There's no handcuffs. And I really hope for him that there's no camera in there and he can just walk in and out the back door and nobody even sees him. That's what I'm hoping for him. As much as I'm no fan, he don't deserve this. And I say it again. He may be guilty of some things.
Starting point is 00:10:27 I'm just comparing it to D.C. Now, comparing it to the real world, different story. But we got to do apples to apples, orange to oranges here. That's Trump. Other big news, the WWE is merging with UFC. It's called Endeavour Corp. There'll be 51% WWE, 49%.
Starting point is 00:10:53 That's big news to me. You know, I'm a big wrestling fan. And WrestleMania, the two nights were just, I haven't seen every match, but the matches I have seen, fantastic. Up next, more, and the market wrap, and whatever else.
Starting point is 00:11:08 I'm Gary. This is the one only Investor's Edge. Hi, I'm Gary Kalpom, hosted a nationally syndicated radio show Investors Edge. We're not just handsome radio people. We manage investors' money for a living, specializing in feedback,

Starting point is 00:12:41 taken a toll. Work pressure, financial stress, changing relationships, and traditional expectations around masculinity can quietly wear men down, often without clear warning signs. In season three of the visibility gap, Dr. Guy Winch and his guests explore how these pressures show up, how to spot them earlier, and how men can access meaningful support. Listen to the new season of the visibility gap, a podcast presented by Cigna Health Care. When energy dips, your reviving routine deserves more than a quick fix. Starting point is 00:13:47 Hey, this promises to be fun. Investors Edge. The last bastion of quality programming. With Gary Coltbaum. It doesn't get better. And the last bit of news. Have you seen what happened with those tornadoes? Man, oh man.
Starting point is 00:14:27 The first week I had ever moved to Florida from New York, I lived in North Miami Beach, Florida. A tornado, the first week hit our place. We lived in an apartment building. I had my window open a little bit. My room was fine. The rest of the apartment, was
Starting point is 00:14:51 yuck I had a deep respect back then and of course all the hurricanes we've been in as I've told you we were down when Hurricane Andrew hit we drove me and my buddies
Starting point is 00:15:04 drove down from Boka down to South Miami we hung out with the National Guard for two days helping out and they took us in their lack of a better word trucks or whatever it was a war zone
Starting point is 00:15:19 so just you know, respect the weather when it hits, especially you all in the Midwest, you know, stay on top of this stuff, whatever you got to do. With hurricanes, you can prepare a lot longer. Tornadoes, anyway, our hearts go out, man, people died, injuries, devastation, I mean, just to the ground. All right. Okay, doke. Um, we, gave you, we really didn't have a great feel for the final four, but we said, we really love Connecticut the whole thing, but we said Miami plus the five and a half, but go very, very small, but Connecticut proved themselves. They were the better team. And heartbreaker
Starting point is 00:16:16 for FAU, the worst, you have the lead the whole second half, up by 14 at one time, and the only time you don't have the lead is at a shot at the buzzer. Wow. The line is seven to half, Connecticut, tonight. I have one big problem. I can't find anybody who likes the other team, San Diego State. That's a problem. I have this rule of betting.
Starting point is 00:16:55 When everybody goes one way, I close my eyes and just go the other way, regardless whether I like it or not. and eight out of ten times. I can't find anybody who likes San Diego State. So let me just say in normal, Connecticut, minus the points. But we're just, I don't think I'm betting the game. I don't like betting with the masses. So just had to mention that.
Starting point is 00:17:21 I think the overrun is 132. I'm apt to go over. But I have no, you know, that's, I'm not going to, I'm not going to bet it. Anyway, that's the story on tonight's final four. And today's, and it should be a great Monday Night Raw tonight, today's market wrap brought to you by Investment-Models.com. That's Jim Rohrabach, one of the great market timers. No gray areas with the man you're either in or out of the market with his proprietary indicators.
Starting point is 00:17:50 Go check it out. Investment-dashmottles.com. The one other bit of news is, as you know, one of the areas we have said to avoid is managed care slash HMOs. On the weekend, the Medicare Medicaid trust fund came out and said, we're going to pay a crap load of money. Guess what? They all turn the corner today.
Starting point is 00:18:16 It's no longer an avoid. It's now something I got to watch. The same thing goes for oils. We have been telling you to avoid oils. With that OPEC move, and oil price is going up five bucks. The OIH, the oil services went up 5%. The oil explorers went up 4.5%. The big oil about 4.5%.
Starting point is 00:18:42 I have yet to do the scan, but a lot of names, I know jumped back above the 50 day. They're not breakouts, but they're what we call turning of the corner. We're not thrilled on news-driven moves, but everything counts. everything counts and when we give you out the numbers we're going to tell you the warts but it was actually a good day today even though the NASDAQ NASDAQ 100 and the socks was down I'll explain so the market wrap is brought to you by
Starting point is 00:19:14 Investment Dash Models.com that's Jim Rohraback one of the great market timers no gray areas with the man you're either in or out of the market as proprietary indicators go check it out Investment dash models.com now listen carefully Dow up a juicy 327 it's not even 1% but it's still 327 what was the story united health by itself one of the Dow 30 was up 222 270 Dow points i'm actually going to give you the exact number in one second but that's what we mean by some narrowness but again everything counts and it has been a stock that has not
Starting point is 00:20:02 perform. 147 points I was off. Sorry about that. Chevron was up almost seven bucks today. 40 plus Dow points. So between the two, let's call it 185 out of that. And really nothing was down in the Dow today. Other things bounced a little bit too. A couple of things were down but no big deal. S&P up 15. Keep in mind the Dow up 1% of out. The S&P's only up not even four-tenths of a percent. NASDAQ down 32, NASDAQ 133, SOX down 30, but, but listen carefully, and this is important because this is the area that's been the strength. The NASDAQ at one time today was at 12-086.
Starting point is 00:20:52 It was down 135, finished only down 32. That is good news. The NASDAQ 100 at one time today, if I can hit 13036, was down 145, finished only down 33. This is good news. The Sox at one time today was 31, 6, and 30. It was down about 68, finished only down 30. This is good news. Why do we say that?
Starting point is 00:21:26 because they've had a little move here recently, and when they have a day of pulling them back, but they can't keep them down even on that day, it's good news. Doesn't have a big impact on tomorrow. You know, every day can be different, but it's a good day when you have things down markedly, and they come back.
Starting point is 00:21:52 And you know what they did at the end of the day, some of the mega caps, regardless that they're earning. suck. NVIDIA today. Let's see where that was. Hit 273 was down four in change, finished up a buck 88. For example. And I don't need to go through a bunch of names, but that's the story. Up next, more on these markets and whatever else I can think of. I'm Gary. This is the one only investor's edge. For many men, mental health challenges aren't recognized until they've already taken a toll. Work pressure, financial stress, changing relationships, and
Starting point is 00:22:50 traditional expectations around masculinity can quietly wear men down, often without clear warning signs. In season three of the visibility gap, Dr. Guy Winch and his guests explore how these pressures show up, how to spot them earlier, and how men can access meaningful support. Listen to the new season of the visibility gap, a podcast presented by Cigna Healthcare. When energy dips, your reviving routine deserves more than a quick fix. Starting point is 00:23:23 it helps support healthy hair, skin, nails, and joints, and a smooth, ready-to-drink shake. So your afternoon reset actually sets you up for success. Vital Proteins. Stay vital. Visit VitalProtene's.com and get started. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. These products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. By the time I hit my 50s, I'd learned a few things,
Starting point is 00:23:47 like how family is precious. Work can always wait. and 99% of people over 50 already have the virus that causes shingles. Not everyone at risk will develop it, but I did. The painful, blistering rash disrupted my life for weeks. Don't learn about your shingles risk the hard way. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist today. Sponsored by GSK.
Starting point is 00:24:17 America is talking. Investors Edge. He's got to be pleased with that. The crowd is just on its feet here. here. He's a Cinderella boy. With Gary Colbomb. It comes highly recommended.
Starting point is 00:24:30 You're going to feel better if you talk to him. And welcome once again to Investors Edge. By the way, you know, we get emails on it a lot when I say to you, I've never been more optimistic on most of us, but never been more pessimistic on all of them. The Republican Party, which I've been a part of forever, I went independent a bunch of years ago when I realized they were a bunch of BS artists. themselves. If you want to know what's wrong with the Republican Party right now, go watch this moron, Marjorie Taylor's Green's interview on 60 minutes last night and some of the things she said, which I don't know what, listen, it's the voters voting these people in. It's the voters. And by the way, she's not the only moron. I mean, the Democrats are full of morons, the Republicans are full of morons. But she thinks she's mainstream and she thinks people like I would even want to even pay attention to this. You'd go watch it. She's a nut.
Starting point is 00:25:56 She's a goofball. Yet she makes a decision on the future of this country. And you know I can pick all of them apart. But I would love my Republican Party to get back to where they used to be. Our tax dollars matters. budgets matter size of government matters the people matter
Starting point is 00:26:25 they talk a good game but we have evidence of four years under Trump they shot the middle finger at us also my favorite one was when Trump says I took care of the farmers no you screwed the farmers and you paid off the farmers with our tax dollars just like the rest of the politicians that suck this is what I mean
Starting point is 00:26:49 and leave no doubt I can't convince the Democrats to think different I can't convince the Republicans that we've converted plenty but on the whole I mean people are in have taken their sides
Starting point is 00:27:05 and as everybody takes their size we're going to be at 50 trillion of debt in the next 10 years one and a half trillion to two and two trillion will be going towards interest on the debts each year. And by the way, in the year 2000, that was the whole spending budget. It takes two to tango, kids. And no Trump is not the savior, kids. Six trillion later in deficits under Trump, kids. But every, you know, I get it. And I respect all. I just, people got back towards start from scratch and really think things through. I don't think there's a lot of that. But okay.
Starting point is 00:28:02 All right. So a few things back on the market. When you're down 135 and finish down 32 and the Azdak, this is good news. When the stocks that have been leading up, and let me put the disclaimer on that and the caveat on that, their earnings are terrible. And if the earnings don't get better, they're going to croak. All these names are going to croak. But another day where they were down marketly and they finished better. Microsoft was down a buck, I think, was down four and a half.
Starting point is 00:28:29 after in the day. Now with the Dow up 327, the advance declines are only 22 up 17 down on the New York, and that's, again, the narrowness. So let me just put a little bow tie. A, we have not really have to go in depth looking at the oils on a nightly basis. We'll probably have to start now. And I say probably because in the past when OPEC does something, there's a day or two of reaction and then it goes away. But we've never had an anti-energy present. like this one, so this one may stick. And when I mean anti-energy, they're insane. They're insane.
Starting point is 00:29:16 Let the windmills fly the airplanes. The managed care, that's United Health, Humana, and the like. We've had avoids on them. News changed the avoid. Doesn't mean their buys, but we'll have to start watching them now. That's how we work. Auto parts retail, AutoZone O'Reilly Automotive, back above the 50 day. That's on my screen.
Starting point is 00:29:49 And by the way, the oils are certainly not leadership at all. We're just pointing out I can now look at them. On the other end, what hasn't changed? Autos. A lot of the retail. A lot. Some getting better. Rails, truckers, hotels, cruise lines, airlines. A lot of the economically sensitive names.
Starting point is 00:30:19 Financials finished down today for the most part with the Dow Up 327, and I use JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs. Both were down today. Bank America was down also. That has not changed. And of course, to be watched. You know, there's this aura right now on the banks that everything's fine. All is good, all's quiet. That may be so.
Starting point is 00:30:45 But while some things have climbed up, climbed up the rope, that everything just slid down, financials have not. And the regionals ain't nothing going on there. They're dead. If that changes, we'll let you know. And just remember that the small cap indices are laden with the small banks. And that's why they've been on the point. By the way, V's and MasterCard back above the 50 day.
Starting point is 00:31:17 Those are financials, but they're a little separate financials because they're just bookies. Greatest bookies of all time. God bless them. Why don't I come up with that? By the way, one of my biggest misses of all time was back in, it was, Oh, six, seriously, Mastercard had just come public. And it did one of these, how do I put it? Great IPO moves.
Starting point is 00:31:48 And it was just the most perfect breakout. August 2nd of 2006, the most perfect breakout on their first earnings report after going public. I didn't buy it. It went from, you ready for this? up 50 to 108 by the next earnings report. You know? What can I tell you?
Starting point is 00:32:16 We tell you our hits and our misses. I'm looking at MasterCard on the monthly right now. Just so you know MasterCard, and this is split-adjusted. Four bucks when it came public, $366.66. 90 times in 17 years. because they're great bookies.
Starting point is 00:32:47 Visa not as strong. That won $14 up to $2.29. And that came public, 07. So it tanked. It hit a high when it first came public at 22. It tanked down to $10. $2.29. Not bad.
Starting point is 00:33:07 Bookies. Oh, to just find some like those. Man, oh man. And we had Visa for a triple before. for COVID. Had it for like two and a half years. And COVID took it down. It's been dead money. Visa now is basically, has done nothing since February of 20. It's up six bucks. And if they break out, we'll take another look because I got news fee. Earnings are still not bad. Same for MasterCard. February of 20. MasterCard's earnings up 13 and 12.
Starting point is 00:33:44 Earnings in sales last quarter. Visa 20 and 12. For the two greatest bookies on earth. What a business. What are they charging now for late fees if you don't pay on time? Is it a lot? I haven't looked. Just so you know, I've never paid interest on a credit card ever.
Starting point is 00:34:08 Crazy if you do. Afterlook. It's probably what is about 21%, 22%, 24%, somewhere in there. Anyway, good day. And now my scans at night have to include another couple areas. And that's how we roll. Let the market dictate, let the market decide. And I must tell you, somebody who loves pullbacks, we wish we didn't bounce up today.
Starting point is 00:34:38 Maybe we pull back a little more tomorrow, but good close. Up next. A more, we'll figure it out. I'm Gary. This is the one only investor's edge. mental health challenges aren't recognized until they've already taken a toll. Work pressure, financial stress, changing relationships, and traditional expectations around masculinity can quietly wear men down.
Starting point is 00:35:30 Often without clear warning signs, in season three of the visibility gap, Dr. Guy Wynch and his guests explore how these pressures show up, how to spot them earlier, and how men can access meaningful support. Starting point is 00:36:07 Visit VitalProtene's.com and get started. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. Don't learn about your shingles risk the hard way.
Starting point is 00:36:44 Talk to your doctor or pharmacist today. Sponsored by GSK. You're listening to... What are we waiting for? Well, what are you waiting for? One, two, red, By the way, word to the wise. I don't know why, but it's really picked up over the last two weeks.
Starting point is 00:37:21 I'm just getting so many scam things coming at me. Don't fall for the stuff. Geek Squad, I owe $499. They send you an email. I guess they know you're at best you do business with Best Buy. You call them up. They want to get a hold of your computer. getting a ton of those
Starting point is 00:37:43 all kinds of stuff and a lot of calls from 833 numbers you know an 833 number sucks right don't fall for that and next time a bunch of scams hit we'll do another little scam show
Starting point is 00:38:01 it's not a scam show it's we explain scams to you remember people are nice there ain't nobody out there so generous they're going to cut you in hey uh you know we're uh selling cigarettes in Maine that we bought from California. We're making 150% our money.
Starting point is 00:38:20 And because we like you so much, we want to cut you in. All it will take from you is, we've been asked about my talk on earnings. So let me explain. The strongest stock, basically off the lows is NVIDIA. Their last three quarters earnings were down 51, down 50, and down 33. That's earnings. Sales, plus 3, minus 17, minus 21.
Starting point is 00:39:01 and then I go look to see what the guidance is for the quarter that they're in. And it's 91 cents. That 91 is against last year's $1.36. That would be another 30-some-odd percent drop in earnings. That would mean 30-something, 51, 50, and 33. yet the stock has gone from 108 to 280 since the low. Albeit the old high was 3.46, so it's getting closer and closer. So what's the problem with all that?
Starting point is 00:39:50 Well, let's say they beat estimates by a wide margin at the end of April quarter. and they do a buck 36 versus a buck 36 it'll be trading at 90 times earnings of the prior four quarters including the one they're in now 90 with four quarters of earnings being down now I know there's the AI factor in there and maybe then into some other things what have we taught you throughout the years on valuation you don't pay for five bucks for a dollar bill and how are you able to know you're paying five dollars for a dollar bill well in the bubbles it was much easier but there's also something called price earnings price to earnings versus growth rates if you have a 90 times earnings that's a ridiculously high number for something that has flat earnings something only growing 20 percent is probably not that great. Their earnings down big. Now maybe the market's saying big recovery but we also watch guidance and what do we mean by that? During a quarter we see
Starting point is 00:41:20 if guidance starts going up. The feel for things. It hasn't moved. So all we're saying is if nothing changes and earnings do not reaccelerate, you're dealing with something that's at 90 times earnings. I don't care what they're selling. with earnings down and the same for Facebook. Last four quarters, minus 18, minus 32, minus 49, minus 52. That is the deceleration of the down quarters. That's what we mean. Now, if the market knows something, we're going to find out soon enough.
Starting point is 00:42:02 But Facebook, last quarters, the quarter they're in now, last year was 272. Estimates, 192. So they're going to have four down quarters in a row while the stock is. going up nicely leading to five dollar bills exchanging them for dollar bills so we're really watching this closely because big glosses come from bare markets and eventual markets recognizing valuations that could cannot stand so just letting you know and we're using those two's an example because they've been standouts. We could also provide Seagate Tech. Last two quarters earnings were down 80 and down 93. The low in October was 47 at 65 right now, and that's not
Starting point is 00:43:11 that great compared to the old high, but something's got to give. Micron, only a $1.91 loss on a 53% drop in sales. By the way, we warned you when they gapped it up to 64. bucks is 59 now. I'm just letting you know right now we are not in a bearish phase. If we go into a bearish phase again, and you know what we mean by that, we think we know the stocks that are going to get clipped and clip big. We suspect that some of these bigger names that are being flocked into right now. Is that a word? Flocked into? Moved into right now. So we are on big time watch. By the way, Apple, last three quarters, minus 8 plus 4 minus 10.
Starting point is 00:44:19 They did $1.52 a year ago. Estimates for this quarter? $1.43. Yeah, they'll beat. But same. You got the point. Have a great evening. Drive carefully.
