Starting point is 00:00:31 Investor's Edge with Gary Coltbaum. Straight talk about you and your money. Now from the BizTalk Studios, here is Gary Cultbaum. And welcome once again to Investors Edge. I'm Gary Colpom. I'm your host. A thanks for being with us today. Glad you here, ladies and gentlemen, happy that you are listening.
Starting point is 00:00:49 It is Monday. It's April 22nd. It's 2024. Hope you're having a good day. Hope you had a good weekend. I'm demoralized. But first, if you do not get this radio show in your city, we'll post it at garyk.com. We'll also post it on our Twitter feed, which is now X.
Starting point is 00:01:10 And if you don't follow us on X, you should. We're quite illuminating and sarcastic. And if you like to email me, just be nice. And in case you don't know, this is serious talk on everything that affects you. The economy, your jobs, your industry, the markets, the Morlocks in D.C. and what's going on with this world. And I started off the show saying, I'm demoralized. It's not going to stop me, but I'm demoralized.
Starting point is 00:01:47 And I think a lot of you are also. You know, I was texting back and forth with three of my good friends from college, and I texted to them, the only thing I thought about when I went to college was have a good time, play tennis on the tennis team go to Clearwater Beach and be nice and what we're seeing
Starting point is 00:02:16 it's by the way it's at University of Michigan it's kind of in a bunch of these colleges and you know racists are not born racist they are taught it they are around it and all I'm thinking to myself
Starting point is 00:02:37 is who in God's name is teaching at these colleges? You have girls, college-age girls, women that are praising Hamas, even though they know Hamas violently raped women. You have gays walking around for Hamas. when they know they would be murdered for being gay. The vileness coming out of these young men and women is outrageous. And all I'm thinking to myself today, these colleges are lucky I'm not president.
Starting point is 00:03:54 These colleges are lucky that I'm not the mayor of the city or the chief of police. I loathe Joe Biden even more today when he was asked about what he's seeing. And he said, yes, that he's against the anti-Semitism. And within no seconds, he brought up Palestine and Gaza. The racist, vile attacks that when we had the George Floyd murder, that they covered it 24-7 as white. supremacy and whites this and whites that and the police suck and it's the police fault you turn on those same networks now all they're doing is covering trump selective outrage on racism selective
Starting point is 00:05:18 outrage and they can all kiss my butt we're going to continue to fight the good fight here I don't know what else to say. These young men and women are going to have to live with themselves. Most of them are wearing masks so they don't get noticed. Because who in God's name would hire such ill? I don't know how this is going to come out. But if these places don't put the hammer down, thee would not get one dime of federal money
Starting point is 00:06:07 ever again ever again ever again if I wasn't with my father and mother this weekend I would have gone to Columbia I would have taken an Israeli flag and draped myself in it and I would have got right into their faces
Starting point is 00:06:35 every single one of them I'm demoralized really am. I wonder what the parents are thinking. I actually wonder what the parents are thinking. The faculty is now protesting that a hundred of them were arrested. Not their vile racism, so we know where this is coming from. These colleges have hired Jew-hating, Israel-hating, racist scumbags.
Starting point is 00:07:33 and are teaching it. We are finding this out. They are making up stories. They are lying about what's going on. And remember, October 7th, they were protesting against Israel the day of the attack. I'm demoralized. But we're going to continue to fight the good fight. In what form?
Starting point is 00:08:03 Not really sure. But we'll keep yapping away. I wish I was running this country now. you have a nut job running the country right now that only cares about Muslim votes so he doesn't lose Michigan that's why today he pivoted so quickly from this vile racist anti-Semitism to Gaza but when I'm done with the show I'm going to work out
Starting point is 00:08:50 walk my dog he will be smiling at me and all that stuff okay we segue coming into this week what did we say money flows have been going towards defensive doubt type areas that's what we've been saying what else we've been saying that the drop in technology was a big wow that we didn't know in what shape or form but we knew march 8th was important important. And we also knew that a lot of software stocks were gagging before March 8th.
Starting point is 00:09:46 Leading to last week's, again, Big Wow, where NVIDIA dropped $84 on Friday. Super Micro dropped 200 and change. The 50-day moving average taken out on a bunch of names. So we knew we got some oversoldness on those tech names. after a month of nausea, six weeks, and then the end of last week, where, by the way, the NASDAQ dropped 9. NASDAQ 100, 952 points, NASDAQ, I think, 890. Well, it wasn't the highs of the day, but the NASDAQ got back 169 today out of the almost 900. The NASDAQ 100 got back 173 of the 952. The Dow was up 253 today.
Starting point is 00:11:01 S&P 43, but, and I'll get to that in a minute. Transport's up 140. Foreign markets had a good overnight. Up next. What is the but? Thanks for being here. I'm Gary. I recently spoke with IBM's new director of research, Jake Mbeta. We discussed his vision for the future of quantum computing. At IBM research, what we always do is answer what is the future of computing, whether it's coming up with new algorithms, coming up with better AI, coming up with quantum, or coming up with just, how do different accelerators go together?
Starting point is 00:13:01 It's our DNA to answer the question of what is the future. Isn't it a perfect problem for IBM because you kind of need to have a legacy of building stuff? Yes. Building actual physical machines. Yeah, it's why I came to IBM. I wanted the experience, the culture of building hard things that others have not done before.
Starting point is 00:13:25 Where do you imagine we are in the timeline of this technology? There will come a point when it will mature. Right? My cell phone is a mature technology at this point. How far are we from that point with Quantum? By 2029, we'll build the first fault-tolerant quantum computer. That is one that can run a very, very large, large problem. To learn how IBM is building the future of computing,
Starting point is 00:13:51 visit IBM.com slash quantum. Want to earn extra income for your business? Amazon Hub delivery is looking for ambitious business owners, to assist with local deliveries. Starting point is 00:14:50 Enjoy savings on top of savings when you shop in-store or online for easy drive-up and go-pick-up or delivery. Restrictions apply. See website for full terms and conditions. It's time to switch on the integrator units. and get the brain cells working. You're listening to. Hey, this promises to be fun. Investors Edge. The last bastion of quality programming.
Starting point is 00:15:15 With Gary Coltbaum. It doesn't get better than this. So, hey, thanks for being here. So, do I start with the good? First off. So last week, we're telling you Dow types. And we also told you, hey, just letting you know, financials the big banks were acting pretty decently
Starting point is 00:15:38 Wells Fargo was in a new high on Friday and I believe we mentioned it was the only new high in the market financials had a very strong day today I don't know what happened but at 1116 they just started popping the conspiracy theorist in us state that somebody leaks something in DC but that doesn't matter that's just me
Starting point is 00:16:03 but just letting you know Goldman up 13 today to 417 and it's trying to bust out of this whole thing Bank of New York Bank America both had really bad reactions to crappy earnings
Starting point is 00:16:22 and they've had this little V-shaped move up like it never happened City group the same and may I state for record they had crappy earnings And just the rest of the financials had a good tone today. Smaller investment banks. Well, just the whole financial complex had a good day today.
Starting point is 00:16:43 The XLF, it's an ETF, went back above the 50 day today. The KBWB above the 50 day. It's the NASDAQ bank index. And even the regional banks had two good days in a row. though they're still, let's see, they hit a high in March of 22, it's 79, it's 48. That's the regional banks. The other, the butt is, the Dow hit 38-447. It was up 460 and only finished up 250.
Starting point is 00:17:32 And by the way, it was only up 210 with 30 seconds to go. and in 30 seconds went up 43 points. So we'll call it a nice day. I'm not going to go further than that for those types except the financials. And what also volume was, what we also found, and we did our scans already, a lot of stocks holding in the... boring lower beta arena 50 day moving average I'm even going to name a few fear just if you want to look at them wing stop Royal Caribbean but Carnival and
Starting point is 00:18:30 Norwegian ain't happening but Royal Caribbean reports in three days some steel names Steel Dynamics, New Corps, Holden the 50 Day. Robin Hood, 50 Day. Dick's sporting goods, 50 day. Instacart, 50 day. And you know what we think of the 50 day. Muay Importante. And a few others.
Starting point is 00:19:10 Not a ton, but enough. The Dow continues to be below the 50 days. right now. The S&P continues to be below. The S&P today was up 2871 but only finished up 43. The NASDAQ hit 15-539. So it was up 250-something, finished 169. And by the way, it was, well, it rallied up 19 points in the last 30 seconds. Make it 10 points. The good news is The NASDAQ today was at 15-430 right at the open. Gave it all back by 1115, and that's when the Jets hit. Got the 15-539, closed at 15451.
Starting point is 00:20:12 And in Techland, the best way to explain it, well, NVIDIA dropped 84 bucks on Friday. It was up 30 today. Down 84 up 30. Doesn't excite. Super Micro was down like 215 on Friday. Was only up three? Facebook meta was up 10 early today. Was down six also when things were weakening.
Starting point is 00:20:46 But it was up 10 and finished up 50 cents. So while I'm happy, We had a good day. We're off the highs. And as I did my scans, there was nary a tech name to be had. Amazon, sitting right at the 50 day, but cracked a little last week. Google, the best of the mega caps. We'll give it that. But after that, we'll take it for what it is.
Starting point is 00:21:26 if you're going to be invested. Financials, some economically sensitive, not all. The oils, which look really in trouble early this morning, then oil prices reversed, still in decent stead, nothing spectacular. The one casualty today was gold. Out of the box, the GLD was down 2% and finished down about 2.5%. on a gap. And we're always looking for maybe a reason.
Starting point is 00:21:59 The only thing I can come up with was last Friday, two Fridays ago. It had one of those big gigantic reversals to the downside, just like the semiconductors did on March 8th. We'll see what it means. But a bad day, definitely a bad day for gold, and miners are definitely weaker. The Sox today, the Philadelphia Semiconductor indexed, finish at 4381. Am I correct? I think so. Up 75, but was 4411, so that came in too.
Starting point is 00:22:43 We're just happy it was an up day. And it's actually good to see financial strong because I pose the question today, how can the market really crack even worse if financials are strong? And the answer is, not so sure it's going to crack so bad. Next, I had a mention China. China was strong today. You can go look at the FXI, the K-W-E-B, C-W-E-B, three exchange-traded funds for China, and holding the 50-day moving average on the pullback.
Starting point is 00:23:27 What was announced, China went into their coffers and bought $41 billion of China stocks in the first quarter and have stated that will continue. Now, I don't know if that's the reason, but it certainly would be a reason. Up next, much more. whatever else. Some carry. This is the one
Starting point is 00:23:55 to only investors' edge. Hello, hello. I'm Malcolm Gladwell, host of the podcast Smart Talks with IBM. I recently sat down with IBM's chairman and CEO,
Starting point is 00:24:11 Arvin Krishna. And I asked him, how can companies use AI to its fullest potential to create smarter business? My one advice to that, pick areas you can scale.
Starting point is 00:24:23 Don't pick the shiny little toys on the side. For example, if anybody has more than 10% of what they had for customer service 10 years ago, they're already five years behind. If anybody is not using AI to make their developers who write software 30% more productive today, with the goal of being 70% more productive.
Starting point is 00:24:51 Yeah. So we are not asking our clients to be the first experiment on it. We say, you can leverage what we did. We're happy to bring out. all our learnings, including what needs to change in the process, because the biggest change is not technology, is getting people to accept that there's a different way to do things. Starting point is 00:26:27 We're listening to. America is talking. Investors Edge. He's got to be pleased with that. The crowd is just on his feet here. He's a Cinderella boy. With Gary Coltbaum. It comes highly recommended.
Starting point is 00:26:40 You're going to feel better if you talk to it. And welcome once again to Investor's Edge. So good day. Bounce. Except for financials on the upside. Not going to go much further than that. Gold on the downside. Not going to go more than that.
Starting point is 00:27:07 But I also have to mention the Bitcoin because I have to. Held the 50 day on this ram to the downside. Let's see if it continues to hold. the insane stock of micro strategy, which is just a high octane times 10, was up 12% today, even though the Bitcoin was up, I don't know, a couple percent or something like that. Be careful with that stuff. But we're happy to see what happened today, and let's hope it continues. I have yet to do my final scan.
Starting point is 00:27:43 a lot of oversold bounces that we would tell people to be careful about. And without getting into names, something that drops 50 points in two weeks and rallies up five. And is up five today. Oh, look, it's up five. That's not good news. You got that? As we said, Nvidia dropping 84 on Friday and rallying 30 today, that's not good news. Well, it's good news if you own it and it's back up 30 today.
Starting point is 00:28:17 but we're talking about from a trend perspective, down 84, up 30. Oh, and by the way, the down 84 was on 87 million shares volume. The up 30 is on 59 million shares. You catch in my drift? It is very important. it is vital. These are our measuring sticks. And too often you hear people that don't do what we do, call on the bottom on every up day, and not really measuring. As we always tell you, be careful. Down two, up one, down two, up one. Down two, up one. Down two, up one. We want up two, up one. We want up two, down two, down two, down. We want up two, down two, down.
Starting point is 00:29:37 down one, up two down one. And we can promise you right now, today being up would be the other part. Now, of very importance, massive amounts of earnings reports to come. You got that? Massive amounts. Massive amounts. The next two to three weeks, everything. Almost everything. From the mega cap tech, Well, let me just say this, like three, four, five thousand stocks. I don't have an exact number. And it's imperative that you stay on top of that. And what we always tell you and what we always will be doing, as I'm doing right now as I speak to you,
Starting point is 00:30:43 I am noticing symbol CDNS, a recent software stock that just broke down from its up trend seven days ago closed at 285 I got a 260 in the aftermarket don't want to see too much of that
Starting point is 00:31:07 so stay tuned we'd like to give you the big whatever going into earnings but we don't have a single solitary clue as to what does what
Starting point is 00:31:25 and why there's no way of knowing and I just want to repeat something to you last week before Netflix reported you had a pundit on TV saying Netflix is going to go up 10 to 12% on earnings it went down 10%
Starting point is 00:31:48 we consider ourselves very smart we have to what do you think we're going to consider ourselves dumb and we don't know and we don't know who's going to report what and why I had no idea Netflix would gag
Starting point is 00:32:16 I had no idea American Express would jump and we'll measure the stocks as they come out like an important name SAP software company foreign
Starting point is 00:32:33 only down a buck in the aftermarket no big deal so I don't have to worry too much but CDNS getting younged Ameriprice Financial reported after the close. I got it flat.
Starting point is 00:32:47 It's been one of the stronger financials. And we'll just take it day by day, one by one, little by little piece by piece, inch by inch, and do our very best. If the markets continue to gag, stay out of the way. That's all. If you can stay out of the way, that is one heck of a talent. Tomorrow, Spotify, GM, GE, Pepsi, Rider, Pulte, Pulte, Holtie, JetBlue, Kimberly Clark, Halliburton, Freeport MacMaran, and that's before the open. after the close Tesla
Starting point is 00:33:50 Visa in the Dow Texas Instruments Seagate and much more that's just in the next day or so so be ready we are and let's hope the market rights itself
Starting point is 00:34:09 again before today money was flowing into the Dow types that continued with a little not the greatest finish but still up and it again, the Dow is still below the all-important 50-day moving average, but the financials got back
Starting point is 00:34:30 above the 50-day moving average. Good to see. And then as always, we close our eyes, hold our nose and pray. And that's how we roll. What happened today at 1116, I have no clue, because the market was coming in hard. Of course, again, as I said, the conspiracy theorist in us, we don't trust anybody out of D.C. Why would we? 35 trillion of debt. You know they kicked out a couple of central bankers for ethics violations, trading, and one guy, Bostic is still there.
Starting point is 00:35:15 As admitted, oh, he was trading, he wasn't supposed to. Do you know the energy secretary, I forgot her name? Which is blasted on Capitol Hill for trading when she's not supposed to. Oh, it was a mistake. I'm sorry. So we trust these people to do the right thing? I don't think so. Not to mention the absolute unadulterated insider trading going on in D.C. that we go to jail for. It's unbelievable what they do. They're voting on legislation and they are buying stocks that will be affected by their vote.
Starting point is 00:36:06 think I'm kidding? Go look it up. Remember, if anybody works at a company or knows information that is material and you trade on it, they're going to jail and you go to jail. Not in D.C. And you wonder why their poll numbers are little less than root canal and jockage. But that's who we deal with and that's what we deal with right now, until we can get rid of them and find some people that are actually going to do the right thing. What a concept. Just do the right thing. $35 trillion of debt tells you they have absolutely no interest in doing the right thing. Up next, this, that, and the other thing, and whatever else. I'm Gary. This is the one only investors, Ed. Hello, hello. I'm Malcolm Gladwell, host of the podcast Smart Talks with

Starting point is 00:40:22 What are we waiting for? Well, what are you waiting for? One, two, ready, go. Action! In the Gester's Edge. With Gary Culpa. Okay. Dun-na-na.
Starting point is 00:40:55 In the news, I just have to mention Scott Sheffler won another golf tournament this week. weekend. I was there when he won the Masters, and then he goes to what Texas, and he wins by three strokes. He's won five tournaments this year, four out of the last five, and he came in second. That is just unbelievable. And I know some people are saying, well, a lot of these players went to LIV, the Saudi Arabian golf. I got news. I don't think they'd be beating him. He kicked their butts into Masters. unbelievable. I couldn't place the golf ball closer than where he hits the ball. His irons are just amazing. Speaking of sports, the Knicks and Rangers both won their first playoff games. We're happy right now.
Starting point is 00:41:52 And by the way, the Rangers, they pretty much look like, they, them and another team, I think, are the best. And we'll see how it goes. The Mets have been playing well, even though they lost their last game. So I'm a little bit sports happy right now, but I shouldn't speak too loudly about that, right? You know what happens when we get full of ourselves. Hey, in the news, the mayor of L.A. Her home was robbed. They were in the house when it was robbed. Just letting you know.
Starting point is 00:42:24 We bring this stuff up because we just think a bunch of these cities are just not. protecting the citizenry, as I have told you, you give me a city to run, crime will be down. You know what criminals are, they're wimps. You know that, right? If they have to pay the piper, they are apt to not commit. There are studies. Just letting you know. Hey, in the news.
Starting point is 00:43:00 Oakland, speaking of, they just posted something to, I guess the Oakland Police Department, 55 cars stolen in the last 48 hours. In Oakland. I don't even know what to say. See, I live in Florida. And, you know, I've been saying things, there's certain things, the Santhus I wasn't happy with,
Starting point is 00:43:30 but he, and he started talking these colleges today he you should have heard him sound like me yeah try doing what they're doing at Columbia University over here in Florida it's what it takes sometimes in the news uh again Joe Biden hates Alaska he is uh as you know everything he's doing right now is to kiss the butts of voters and frankly I guess I can't blame I guess other politicians do the same. As the election is nearing, he's now blocking oil drilling and mining in the state of Alaska. You know, no big deal, right? All I can tell you is he's going to restrict oil gas and critical mineral development. Interesting mineral development. In case you don't know,
Starting point is 00:44:29 these minerals are very important to the creation of and the making of semiconductors. Huh. So we have to buy these minerals. from China. So we got this chance to get him from Alaska, but no, Joe Biden has issued a statement saying he is honoring the culture history and during wisdom of Alaska natives. It's a lie because local indigenous leaders are against the restrictions that Biden's pushing. So just another lie from the greatest liar of all time. Taking the championship belt from the last guy, which was a gargantuan high bar to get over. So, sorry, Alaska.
Starting point is 00:45:18 What can I tell you? But at the same time, they're easing sanctions on Venezuela oil production. No, we're not making that up. Dirtier oil and more costly oil because of transporting from Venezuel. Venezuela, but not in Alaska. You see, Joe Biden does not give a crap about the environment. It's okay to produce in Venezuela, but not in Alaska, just to please his voters. And it's the same reason why today, when asked about the anti-Semitism, he said, yeah, I'm against it, and pivoted right to Gaza, because he can't piss off the voters in Michigan.
Starting point is 00:46:07 Yay. And then there's the student loan forgiveness. We warned you, but really wasn't us. It was Jefferson. More than two centuries ago warned against the person who is going to use the treasury to buy votes left and right. And not to say that others haven't done in the past, this guy's really doing the job for the young vote. voters. Here, I'm going to use other taxpayers' money, even though they won't see it to pay your student loans off. And it's getting bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger. There's a new thing, the safe plan, which it's so convoluted, I don't even know what to tell you. What's interesting is I know people that are not getting relief on their student loans because they're not
Starting point is 00:47:21 the right group and therein lies the issue picking and choosing now i get it if you help out the firefighter or the police officer i actually get that they're serving the citizenry but i don't get the other stuff so the beat will go on trillions of dollars of debt trillions of dollars of deficits when it hits. $34 trillion has not done the job. Let's hope I'm not around when it does. You'll have a great evening drive carefully. And when you get home, do like we do.
Starting point is 00:48:14 Quite simple. Make sure you hug your family. Make sure you hug your children. They will feel better. You will feel better, I promise. Winston's doing great. My parents had a good weekend. Take care, everyone.
