Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Good people. What's up? What's up? It's Questlove. So recently, I had the incredible opportunity to have a real conversation with an actress and producer, Jamie Lee Curtis, from routines to recovery, true lies, and a certain Jermaine Jackson music video. Jamie's surreal and raw. And it's something I really admire about her. I am so happy that I'm the head bitch in charge at 67, that I'm in. I have the perspective that I have at my age to really be able to put all of this into context.
Starting point is 00:00:38 Listen to the Questlove show on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm Clayton Eckerd. In 2022, I was the lead of ABC's The Bachelor. But here's the thing. Bachelor fans hated him. If I could press a button and rewind it all I would. That's when his life took a disturbing turn. A one-night stand would end in a courtroom. The media is here. This case has gone viral.
Starting point is 00:01:06 The dating contract. Agree to date me, but I'm also suing you. This is unlike anything I've ever seen before. I'm Stephanie Young. Listen to Love Trapped on the Iheart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Ceno Show podcast, each episode invites you into a raw, unfiltered conversations about recovery, resilience, and redemption. On a recent episode, I sit down with actor, cultural icon Danny Trail, to talk about addiction, transformation, and the power of second chances.
Starting point is 00:01:35 The entire season two is now available to bench, featuring powerful conversation with the guests like Tiffany Addish, Johnny Knoxville, and more. I'm an alcoholic. This is a special episode, one of our IRL weeklies, a little bit different today, because we are talking about the Oscars last night. There are so many important moments to discuss and even to discuss where IRL is connected.
Starting point is 00:03:14 Like, we feel very strongly on this podcast about a couple of people that were having an amazing moment last night at the Oscars. So we shall discuss. Do you remember actually when we interviewed Tiana Taylor back in 2023? You know, that was her, I think, one of her first, like her kind of like her acting debut in a way for 1001, which is a great film. But, you know, in our trailer, how you introduce her is actually, you say, Future Academy Award winning Tiana Taylor. Yo, I mean, I'm putting it out there. I'm really like, you know what I mean? Manifesting thing for people.
Starting point is 00:03:48 It happens. There's a clip back in the day of me talking about people having babies together. It's like, it happened like three times. So I was like, you guys going to have a baby? and then they had a baby. It was like three times. I put that on somebody and it happened. So, yeah, she didn't win the Oscar,
Starting point is 00:04:03 but she did get the nomination, and she got all the glory of that moment. And it was just so much. You could just tell she's, like, francing around and these amazing outfits in her glory. Like, she's, I don't know, she's just in the space that she's worked so hard to be. And I think winning the award sure is nice,
Starting point is 00:04:22 but I think it's beyond winning the award. It's just like filling up And being in the space that you're supposed to be in life, I feel like she's arrived in that space with or without an Oscar. She's arrived in the space that she's worked so hard to be. You could totally tell how happy. I mean, I don't think there was anyone more happy just to be at the Oscars than Tiana Taylor was. You know, her category came really early on in the Oscars last night.
Starting point is 00:04:47 And when she lost to Amy for weapons, that girl, the camera pants of her, you see Tiana jumping on my up and down. Oh, my God. You thought for a second, like, did Tiana just win? That's her way of showing. Like, she's just, that's to me. That's exactly what I'm saying. It's like, she's just happy to be in this moment.
Starting point is 00:05:07 She's happy to be sitting next to Leo, happy to be in this class, happy to be making art that I'm sure she's super proud of. And, you know, sitting next to her mom, who's been on this journey with her whole, I mean, she gave her her journey, right? But, like, I don't know, just the whole thing. and Michael B. Jordan there with his mom.
Starting point is 00:05:26 There was a lot of love. And maybe it's just us. Maybe we're biased a little bit. But like, I just felt like, it just felt like a lot of love was present yesterday. Watching Michael B. Jordan win that award sitting next to his mother and he's been a working actor since he's a kid. And the fact that he said, I could feel everybody's wanting me to do well. Like, I felt that deep. Like, because I feel that sometimes.
Starting point is 00:05:52 Like, sometimes we'll do something and I'll meet. people, they'd be like, yo, or even with the pod, they'd be like, I love the pod so much. And I could feel that they wanted to do well, that they want me to do well. And that's such a great feeling. I can only imagine for him with like more than half the world rooting for him to have this moment, what that must feel like. And then he wins it, and he's sitting next to his mom. And then he goes to N&L Burger after, which was so, we didn't love him enough.
Starting point is 00:06:18 The whole thing was just really nice to see. So yeah, it was a special moment. One of the things I wanted to talk about, and we are going to play some clips to refer to some of these episodes that we're talking about. But one of the things that I loved seeing last night was, you know, there's a new category for casting director. There is watching the cinematographer for the woman who won for sinners. Yeah, Autumn, watching her win. You know, it really, and a lot of people in their speeches refer to, like, filmmaking is not the star. It's not just Michael B. Jordan.
Starting point is 00:06:52 like Michael B. Jordan, yes, he won an Oscar. That's amazing. God bless him. But if Ryan didn't write that script, if his wife didn't produce it with him, if that cinematographer didn't make it look the way it looked, like it really is, and it really takes a village, is what I'm saying. And to see some of those people in the village be acknowledged, that to me last night was super dope. I love seeing that. I love seeing the people that, you know, make the village. And so there was a lot of that going on last day. And totally, and by the way, congratulations to Ryan, because he did win for best screenplay. He didn't win the director award, but he will at some point. It said Marty Scorsese, I don't know how many films before
Starting point is 00:07:33 he got one. Ryan's going to get one. But I was glad that he won screenplay. And then some of the post interviews, man, the way he talks about his wife, can we just, before I get into what I have to say about that, do we have any questions? Do we have any questions? from his episode that referred to that at all? Yes. I got an amazing wife who's been with me, knowing me a long time, and it's always very honest with me.
Starting point is 00:08:02 It's very smart. So I keep her around and let her in on everything I'm doing, so she can kind of give me perspective. When I'm drowning in stress, she can tell me, yeah, you should be worried or not, you're tripping, you know what I'm saying? Lots to love about that clip, number one, as also a fellow workaholic, understand the concept behind that. I love hearing that from him. But I don't think just the way that he respects and honors his wife. And even when people try to give him credit for that, you know,
Starting point is 00:08:30 sometimes, I hate to see this, but like, sometimes people will be like, oh, it's always the way you talk about your wife. Like if he's doing her a favor. You know what I'm saying? Like, oh, it's nice. You let your wife produce the movie. And people don't say that, but there is a tone sometimes that people say something that makes, I don't know, it like diminishes, diminishes her importance. And he is always the first one to check that. He's like, oh, it's not a favor. Oh, no, I'm grateful to have her be part of this film. Oh, this film doesn't happen without her. You know, I love the way he checks people in terms of the tone in which people refer to his wife. I'll tell you a quick story about Zanzi. And y'all should just know, man, that this movie,
Starting point is 00:09:13 you know, big credit to her and said our partner, man, but it wouldn't be what it was without her, man. And she did it all. pregnant and postpartum, most of you. Like, like I seen her, she was in every, she was in every post-production meeting, man, like, like holding it down and dealing with all types of stuff, you know, the only I could see. We took the film on the road all over the world while she was out there.
Starting point is 00:09:44 Y'all saw her, man, that wasn't easy. And then we, and it hasn't stopped. You know what I mean? All of this since, you know, our little baby is seven months old now. And she, and she, and as good as a producer she is, she had even better mom. So to see her do all of this is crazy. But, but, but, but, I'm, I'm going to just, I'm just, I'm just, I'm just
Starting point is 00:10:02 leave y'all with one insight into her brilliance, man. Like, like, like, we were dealing with some stuff at home and, and, and, and, and, and, and, things. And I did what I did. I vented for like 40 minutes to her about, you know, who did what and why we got to do this to support who. And, and she took a deep breath when I got done Vin in her crazy, zingy way. And she says, you know, sometimes it doesn't matter who's right. What matters is that people know that the other person cares about him. And I, and I had, you know, I'm a writer. I heard a lot of words. I listen. I think about words about time. I live with this woman for a long time and I never heard those words put together like that in that context. And I was like, God damn, man, you one of one. And I felt like one-on-one for bagging her, you know, you know what I'm saying? Um. I, thank you, say, hey, hey, hey, so, so look, yo, hey, so, um, I see all the comments.
Starting point is 00:11:13 Everybody's like, I pray for us all of the findings. this type of love. So, and that's a dope thing about Ryan. It's like he pays attention to the detail of, he's such a truth teller. Like, you know what I'm saying? That even like a false tone about his wife, he's going to check
Starting point is 00:11:30 that fast. And I just appreciate that so much. And I think that's what makes him a phenomenal storyteller. Is this like, the music's always going to be the right music, the tone, the laugh, the way you ask the question about my wife. I'm like,
Starting point is 00:11:45 We're going to get that right. Because, you know, sometimes it's in the little things, how things are framed. And I just appreciate that about him so much. One of the reasons why not only is he one of my favorite filmmakers, but I just think he's super dope as a human being. I don't know his wife. I've never met her, but I'm like her number one fan. I just love them as a couple.
Starting point is 00:12:09 And it's just so nice to see that type of love. You know what I'm saying? And that type of work relationship, too, by the way, because he'll tell you himself that that movie wasn't what it would have been what it was without her on it. So that was really nice to see. And then also a quick little clip of Michael B. Jordan at In-N-Out Burger after the awards. The part in his speech where he says to his kids, I'm sorry that this is causing us to be, you know, spend so much time away from you.
Starting point is 00:13:57 But the one thing I hope when I'm long and gone is that I leave you with good memories. I was weeping. You were so emotional. What was wrong with us? Why are we so evil? But that's what I mean. Because it was actually, there was so much genuine love happening. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:14:19 It was just, yeah, I don't know. What do you think? Why? What are we going to say? I think you can relate when you put that much, when you really care and love about your work that you do, you know how much it takes to make something good, to make something great. Yes. Hi, this is Joe Winterstein, host of the Spirit Daughter podcast, where we talk about astrology, natal charts, and how to step into your most vibrant life. And I just sat down with a mini driver.
Starting point is 00:14:49 The Irish traveler said when I was 16, you're going to have. a terrible time with men. Actor, storyteller, and unapologetic Aquarian visionary. Aquarius is all about freedom-loving and different perspectives, and I find a lot of people with strong placements in Aquarius are misunderstood. A son and Venus and Aquarius in her seventh house spark her unconventional approach to partnership. He really has taught me to embrace people sleeping in different rooms, on different houses and different places, but just an embracing of the is-nobranchil.
Starting point is 00:15:21 of it all. If you're navigating your own transformation or just want to chart side view into how a leading artist integrates astrology, creativity, and real life, this episode is a must listen. Listen to the Spirit Daughter podcast
Starting point is 00:15:36 starting on February 24th on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen to your podcast. I'm Clayton Eckerd, and in 2022, I was the lead of ABC's The Bachelor. Unfortunately, it didn't go according to plan. He became the first bachelor to ever have his final rose rejected. The internet turned on him.
Starting point is 00:15:56 If I could press a button and rewind it all, I would. But what happened to Clayton after the show made even bigger headlines. It began as a one-night stand and ended in a courtroom, with Clayton at the center of a very strange paternity scandal. The media is here. This case has gone viral. The dating contract. Agree to date me, but I'm also suing you. Please search mark.
Starting point is 00:16:20 This is unlike anything I've ever seen before. I'm Stephanie Young. This is Love Trapped. This season, an epic battle of He Said She Said, and the search for accountability in a sea of lies. Listen to Love Trapped on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Good people. What's up? What's up?
Starting point is 00:16:50 It's Questlove. So recently, I had the incredible opportunity to have a real conversation with actors and producer, Jamie Curtis ahead of the release of her new thriller series, Scarpetta. I can honestly say I've never done an interview like that before. You know, at one point I shut my laptop down. And we just started chatting as old friends, recent Oscar recipient. So we have some commonality there. I predicted that, by the way. And you said these words to me, dust off your mantle. Yes. And I looked at you and I said, what? And you said, dust off your mantle.
Starting point is 00:17:30 And then I left and that was it. And then when all of that happened, I remember the next morning, I think I wanted to like write you and go, how did you know? Listen to the Questleaf show on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Adventures of Curiosity Cove Podcasts,
Starting point is 00:17:52 what if the right fit isn't what everyone expects? In the case of the right fit, Ella explores movement, confidence, and belonging, and learns that not all strength looks the same. Tennis is powerful. Fast, focused, and kind of fun. Strong swing, Ella. This Women's History Month story introduces kids to women who change sports by trusting themselves and moving differently. A thoughtful episode about identity, courage, and helping kids discover where they truly belong.
Starting point is 00:18:24 So it's okay if I'm not quite sure what my thing is yet. It's absolutely okay. When, and if you do find a sport you love, you may be the next Gertrchew, Tony, or Venus. At Curiosity Cove. Listen to Adventures of Curiosity Cove every Monday from the Black Effect Podcast Network on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts,
Starting point is 00:18:47 or wherever you get your podcast. I went and sat on the little ottoman in front of him. I said, hi, Dad. And just when I said that, My mom comes out of the kitchen, and she says, I have some cookies and milk. This is a badass convict. Right. Just finished five years.
Starting point is 00:19:07 I'm going to have cookies and milk at my mom. Yeah. On the Senor Show podcast, each episode invites you into a raw, unfiltered conversations about recovery, resilience, and redemption. On a recent episode, I sit down with actor, cultural icon, Danny Trail, talk about addiction, transformation, and the power of second chances. The entire season two is now available to Bench featuring powerful conversations with the guests like Tiffany Addish, Johnny
Starting point is 00:19:34 Knoxville, and more. I'm an alcoholic. And without this trouble, I'm going to die. Open your free I-Heart radio app. Search the Cito Show and listen now. By the way, speaking of making things, I posted
Starting point is 00:19:53 recently, you know, I posted a clip that I finally, that I shadowed on my boy, Stephen Capewell, junior on the set of man on fire. So I posed this thing on Instagram that I have secretly been studying your filmmaking for the past. I don't know, four, five. I feel like since COVID, honestly, doing masterclasses,
Starting point is 00:20:09 doing lessons, shadowing people, asking a lot of questions, doing research, reading books, all that. Brittany, too. Brittany's been on this journey with me for two of us. And so I shared a post of how I was able to follow Stephen in Mexico City on the set of man on fire, which is getting ready to come out, which I'm very excited to see,
Starting point is 00:20:29 but I was there when he was directing an episode in Mexico City. Now, Stephen, who was an amazing filmmaker, also friends with, not only is he friends with Ryan, Ryan, I believe, kind of put him on to Creed 2, because, you know, Ryan did Creed 1, Stephen did Creed 2, while I believe Ryan was doing Black Panther. Anyway, I say that's all that to say.
Starting point is 00:20:56 Ryan Googler went to USC. Stephen Cable Jr. went to USC. The person who won best documentary last night, USC film student. I don't know what we got to do. We don't know if there's like an online program or something, but whatever they're doing at the film school at USC, bravo,
Starting point is 00:21:20 because you churning them out over there. But yeah, I feel makes an interesting, beautiful, I don't know, graft. In and out, after this Oscars, the in and out stock is up at USC as we have flooded with applicants for sure. That was happening. As it should.
Starting point is 00:21:42 As it should. Yeah, it was a great night. What else? Tiana Taylor. I know we talked about her not winning, but she looked incredible. She had an amazing night. I'm certain.
Starting point is 00:21:54 I love seeing her there with her mom. As women in filmmaking for sure. autumn winning best cinematography for being the first woman to ever win in that category and when she tells all the women in the audience she's like if you're a woman's up oh, it's so good.
Starting point is 00:22:11 That's so good. And I'm so glad that because sometimes people call out to the audience and they're like, yo put your hands together or whatever and people don't oblige. You're like, yeah, whatever. But when they zoom out the camera to show everyone standing up, you're like,
Starting point is 00:22:26 dang, that's how many women are part of this industry and without their influence. And they often go unnoticed. They all usually behind people. Even the woman who won for wardrobe, best wardrobe. I was thinking about my friend Tiffany. Shout out to Tiff the stylist. You know, she'd been doing this for years for all types of shows and films and projects.
Starting point is 00:22:49 And she don't get that type of recognition, but she'd be right next to the people making films. And I was watching the woman who did win for wardrobe. I think it was for Frankenstein. Yeah, which was spectacular. Frankenstein wardrobe is spectacular. Yeah, so for that, for her and for all, can you imagine, my friend Tiffany, for all of the many, many women behind the seas that have been working at this 10, 20, 30 years to finally be recognized.
Starting point is 00:23:17 It's pretty, I mean, all that caused for waterworks. All of that was very emotional yesterday. Well, I love seeing you. 100%. I think an overall, an overall theme for it is like... Takes a village? Well, yes, of course, that takes a village. But also doing things without recognition, like still maintaining motivation throughout it without getting like, you know, that pat on the back. Because there's, even after an Oscar, after an award win, those women are still going to go back and, you know, do the same great level of work.
Starting point is 00:23:55 And some people are there and they're never going to get it at all. So the Oscars is a nice spot, but it is it. I'm going to be honest. Normally you watch the Oscars and you say the big celebrity wins the best actor, best supporting actor, best whatever. And everybody's like those are the moments. I don't feel like those were the moments this year. I feel like the moments were the people that were behind the camera,
Starting point is 00:24:19 the people that don't agree were the moments that I got most emotional. when she went on them who's been a cinematographer for I don't know how many years makes the whole all the women in the room stand up or the woman like I said who won best um wardrobe or just any of those moments like or the agents I feel like there was a moment with it with agents and just all the casting directors yeah and a casting director who you know people spend their whole life hours lose sleep lose like and built a craft a valuable craft a valuable craft. craft that sits quietly kind of in the shadows while these big productions are made and then the actor goes and gets the spotlight and gets the awards. But it's the people behind the scenes. It's the village. And to me, that those moments last night were the most special moments at the Oscars. Those are the ones that got me a little watery eyed more than anything. And then, of course, Ryan, it's amazing.
Starting point is 00:25:16 I'll forever cry for them. But, yeah, I hope we see more of that. I think that was super dope. And the theme of it takes a village, but it's also like what God has for you, like that timeline is way above you. Like he's already, whoever up there, whatever you believe in now, already hasn't figured out.
Starting point is 00:25:39 Like you're taking a Tiana who has been working since she was a teenager, a baby. She goes from music artists to quitting music to picking up a camera herself and creative directing all the way to now. And you know, now she's getting getting that recognition. And then even a Michael B. Jordan, who started off when he was also a kid from going from the wire, right,
Starting point is 00:26:03 to now he finally. So hoppers to commercials and what they broke together as a team is even that, even the friendship of these two men at the awards together, having that grand moment together after Fruitville Station, after Creed, after Black Panther to be here during sinners. I mean, it's really like, come on, this is pretty spectacular stuff. And then for them to be real ones, let's be honest, you know what I'm saying? Like, no, seriously, like, it's not a small thing.
Starting point is 00:26:40 And I think for me, that's more than half of the joy. Like, it's that that's a real one right there. Man, look at that. That to me is the most inspiring part of it. because there have been people successful in Hollywood. There have been people who have broke boundaries and knocked doors down and that's cool. But like to be a real one and do it, to me is a different level of success. To maintain who you are, where you from, the people you came up with, your beliefs, your vision, your art, your storytelling is so pure and honest.
Starting point is 00:27:18 And then you do it that way under those circumstances. That to me is like, that's the most inspiring it can get. And so when Ryan Cougar is concerned, that's what I feel will happen. And Mike, too. And Mike, too. He's so real that he won't even be on the voting committee for the Oscars because he's like, no, I don't want to, I would feel bad judging my peers art. No, he, I'm trying to tell you, he is a real one.
Starting point is 00:27:48 We're going to start with Ryan Cougar fan club here at the end of Martin's viral podcast. And by the way, guys, if you have not watched this episode, please go back. It was before sinners. Was it right before centers? Why do we? It was way before centers, actually. He was working on sinners, right? He was like working on it, writing it. But, oh, yeah, he was doing the project with the basketball project. But it's just, it's an insight into him as a human, like, and as a creative. And I really love that episode. And now granted, we could be biased because we are, like I said, we do fancy film and we aspire to be filmmakers and we're in that creative learning space right now. And so maybe we're a little biased. But I just think there's so much to learn about that the way he navigates through his world. And he's just super dope. And like I said, a real one. So definitely worth an episode worth watching if you haven't called it yet.
Starting point is 00:28:46 Also, I highly recommend one of Britney's favorite episodes ever on IRL podcast. Tiana Taylor, right? I don't want to misspeak. That's me your favorite ones. It's definitely one of mine, too. Whenever everybody asks, you always refer to that one. Yeah, because I always appreciate, like,
Starting point is 00:29:03 if you want a glimpse of it, just watch the trailer on the, on the Angie Martinez IRO page, because you can go out with the show. Let's go out with both their trailers on this episode. No, seriously, I want you got to see it because you get to sense. Like, we take time on those trailers for the pod.
Starting point is 00:29:18 We, like, after the episode, I'm like, what do we like? learn from them. What did we talk about? And then we make a trailer based on that. And so it's the, it's the what we think is in the episode. And it's just a sample. It's a tiniest little sample ever. But I'll give you both of those on the end of this so you can do it. So you can check those episodes out. Anyway, this is also a new episode, random, not Oscars related. Well, June Ambrose was at the Oscar party looking fabulous. But June and brood are our past episode. And there's some beautiful stories from June, too, about learning to deal with grief after losing her mom.
Starting point is 00:29:50 she shares the story about J&B and we don't really get to hear a lot of intimate stories about J&B in the way she shared it that I thought was pretty great. Anyway, another episode can you to check out that just dropped. All right, so as I promise, I'm going to leave you with these two trailers of two episodes that you can check out
Starting point is 00:30:08 as it relates to the Oscars. But feel free to check out whatever episode you like. Just make sure you subscribe and tell a friend and I'll be back on to Wednesday with a new episode. So hopefully you'll check that out. Thank you to Boost Mobile. Thank you, Britt. And we'll catch you soon.
Starting point is 00:30:29 Yeah, it definitely feel like the moment. Future Academy Award winning Tiana Taylor. Being strong woman is not by choice. You know what I'm saying?
