We get to ask other people questions because we're sick and tired of being asked questions. Well, sick and tired is a strong way to put it, but, you know, tired and sick. Tired and sick.

Starting point is 00:01:23 The yard birds, right? That's the name. The Harvard yard, but they're open. Do you have a name suggestion? We're open. since you guys are middle-aged. One erection. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends

And I'm C.J. Toledano. It's our favorite time of the year on our podcast point game, the playoffs. We're digging into the biggest surprises of the season.
Starting point is 00:01:56 And I'm looking back on some of my greatest. playoff moments. If we didn't talk ever again, I was crying. You just understood. That's how personal it got. Wow. Then after that game seven, Marquis come until he's like, you know, I love you, dog. You know, it's all love. This was just playoffs. This was just basketball. So listen to Point Game on the I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. What were you thinking at your 80th birthday? They thought I was surprised. You were not? I knew about it, honey, way before they thought I did. Child, I knew. But I had to go along with it. I said, oh, wow. And when we opened the door and saw all of those wonderful people, I said, I'm so shocked.
Starting point is 00:02:41 Thanks for watching, guys. Today's episode is brought to you by Boost Mobile. So I want to toast to you. To me. And thank you for inviting me and my crew into your home. You have a lovely crew and you're my best friend. We're best friends already. Already.
Starting point is 00:02:56 I've known you for so long. And I've just admired you. Really? Yeah, girl, you got it going on. Well, I have admired you, obviously, for many years. And that your home feels as joyful and magnetic as you do. Thank you so much. Thank you, honey.
Starting point is 00:03:17 That is a wine. Isn't it wine? What is that? I shouldn't give my plug. I'm not. I'll tell you, though. It's an expensive one, though, isn't it? No, that's right. Before we start, because I could usually get very comfortable in your home, took up my shoes already.
Starting point is 00:03:31 Good. Had me a little patty pie already. Oh. But I do want to do a proper intro, get some accolades going here, so everybody can recognize the presence that we're in today. Patty LaBelle is an undeniable music legend whose career spans over six decades with classics like Lady Marmalade on my own. If Only You Knew, she's a Grammy winner, a Billboard chart topper. She has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Apollo Theater Hall of Fame. I mean, this, honestly, this could take all day and have the show.
Starting point is 00:04:03 She's a phenomenal cook, like everybody knows. She has a track record of cooking for some of the music's industry's best legends. They have been raving about her meals for years, and that eventually led to the founding of her own food brand. Her food company is undeniably successful. She has a heart as good as her voice and an energy that is just unmatched. The legendary, Caddy LaBelle is our guest today on IRA. When you think about some of those things, what do they mean to you? Are they important to you?
Starting point is 00:04:32 Like when you think of accolades and all those words, awards and those moments and those. I think it's a blessing. I don't take anything for granted. Yeah. And so when I'm being honored and I just hope I say the right speech when I receive the award. You want to say something good? Something good and something meaningful.
Starting point is 00:04:50 But it's crazy because even when you come in your house, all of this, there's so much memorabilia here. Like you clearly, it means something. Like your history, your career, your impact. I feel like you, you know, you know, you. take the time to be surrounded by it and look at it and enjoy it. I do. I sometimes look at some of the awards that I've gotten and some of the letters from certain presidents and especially Obama.
Starting point is 00:05:18 I look at what I have achieved and how many people, I think, like me. Love you. Love me. And you know, you can never, ever say enough about that. It's just always an honor and a pleasure to know that somebody cares. I don't take it for granted, never. Sometimes I think it's like outrageous to certain people. They might say I'm too loud, too big, too just wrong.
Starting point is 00:05:46 You know, a lot of people think that, you know, that- Who are these people? Some people that I won't name. Anyway, girl, listen, I have, all my life have been big in voice and never holding back. And- like young? No young, I was very shy. I didn't do anything.
Starting point is 00:06:06 I played with my cat. Called him Skippy. He committed suicide because I will put nail polish on his little feet. And he ran away one day, but I know he went in the sewer close to my house. He committed suicide. And I had butterflies. I was a very lonely child, no friends. Really?
Starting point is 00:06:25 Cats and butterflies. Yes. That is not what I would have expected. Oh, and I would go in the garage and make hot sauce. hot sauce. I would use ketchup. Well, that I would expect. Yeah, that I did start cooking in my younger years. Yeah. And I've been just a shy girl and I'm still kind of shy. That's not, that can't be possible. Why? Because I see you on that stage. Girl, that's what you see. Stage Patty and then here's Patty with you. I'm very,
Starting point is 00:06:51 like I was very nervous to do this interview with you. Are you kidding me? Girl, I'm serious. Who is that? Because you're big. No, you're And I'm big. You are. I know. But I still admire you. And that brings off a little bit of nervous Patty to you. To you.
Starting point is 00:07:09 See, when I saw you in the kitchen, I hug you first. But no, it's real. And it's because you're so special. Thank you. And I meet special people and I'll let them know I think they're special. Don't hold that. I love that. That's so surprising to me.
Starting point is 00:07:30 You're so amazing. Does it ever change that inner kind of, I don't know, shyness or will you question yourself or you? I still question certain things about me at 81. I still ask, well, what do you think about that? What do you think about this? And if it's something I don't want to hear, I just don't talk to them anymore. I just figured out on my own. Figure it out on your own.
Starting point is 00:07:54 No, but I, every year that I've been on this planet, I've been, Whoever I ended up being at the end of that year, she was cool. She was good. She was the one that I have to be because I couldn't pretend that she didn't exist. We just had, we had Jill Scott on the podcast recently, your Philly sister. A Philly girl. Yeah. Have you spent a lot of time with her? When we can.
Starting point is 00:08:19 Okay, yeah, yeah. You know, but we don't get time. She's always on tour and I'm always on tour. The reason I brought her up is because we just interviewed her and she had this theory about age and women. And I'm curious your take on it. She said, Jill Scott thing of life for women. She said, you work hard in your 20s, you work smart in your 30s, you work how you want to in your 40s,
Starting point is 00:08:40 you work when you want to in your 50s, and you work if you want to in your 60s, which I thought was good, and people really related to that. But then she stopped because she doesn't have the perspective. 70s and 80s. What happens? You still do what you did in your 50s.
Starting point is 00:08:57 I do. Really? Really? Oh, yes. So you don't, there's no shift. But do you, does that any of that ring true to you? Some of the things, you know, but it's like I've been whoever I am now that I was at 20.
Starting point is 00:09:12 Really? I know I am. I know it. Are you the same? I'm the same boring girl. You're not making the same mistakes though. No. That I won't.
Starting point is 00:09:21 I won't make any more, no more, no more drama. None. You're not making the same mistakes you made into your 20s and 30s and you're 40s. No. Well, it's like I still have little pieces of some of my 30s and 40s in my 80s. I do. And it's nothing that's going to hurt me. You know, I like I said, I'm blessed to be in this place of where I am at 80.
Starting point is 00:09:48 I'm still walking, talking, thinking the way I did in 30s and 40s. Thinking impact, having a business, a successful business. Yeah. It's like I never really thought at 80. I would really still be standing on stage singing. Really? Yeah, I'm amazed at my stamina. I'm amazed at my still having an audience.
Starting point is 00:10:14 I'm amazed that I haven't had a single or an album in 22 years, R&B album. I've had jazz and gospel, but I'm working on the R&B album. I'm saying, God, it's been a long time since that happened. And like I said, I'm still saying, girl, you're blessed. Because people don't even buy music from 80-year-old chicks. Yeah. They're going to buy yours though. I hope so, because I'm going to give them something they can feel.
Starting point is 00:10:45 That we know for sure. Yeah. What were you thinking at your 80th birthday? Because I saw some of the photos and videos and... I, first of all, they thought I was surprised. You were not? I knew about it, honey, way before they thought I did. I thought I did telling me that we're going to a meeting with Walmart.
Starting point is 00:11:03 Now I had this beautiful Zang toy dress on down and all these blings on my ear. And it's your 80th birthday. It's my 80th birthday. What are we going to a meeting with Walmart for me looking like this? So you played along? I played along. Yeah. And they still thought they got me when we went to the back of this restaurant.
Starting point is 00:11:22 We pulled in where no people were and all that stupid stuff. Child, I knew. But I had to go along with it. I said, oh, wow. And when we opened the door and saw all of those wonderful people, I said, I'm so shocked. Girl, I was lying. Who was there? Tell me, paint the picture for me a little bit.
Starting point is 00:11:41 Take me into the party. Gosh. Can't remember? Tamarin, Gale King, I think Whoopi. All the women. It was so many entertainers there. And so many, like my mailman was there. Your mailman?
Starting point is 00:11:57 Oh, I love that. from Philadelphia, came to New York to the party. He was invited. They were invited. And just everybody, everybody, my niece was there. Oh, Stacey, the day of Stacey's birthday, May 18th, Happy Birthday, Stacy. Yeah, she was there, all of my, I don't have many family members left,
Starting point is 00:12:16 but the ones that I have, they were all there. It was just fun, my band, my background singers. Just so many people. It was a beautiful party. Starting point is 00:13:36 I don't have that many family members, because my mom's always talking about that. My mom is in her seven inches. She's always like, she's the oldest now. Oh. She's the, you know, so. She lost many. She lost, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:47 So now she's the older. She has three younger, so she's still, you know, she has siblings still, but she is like becoming the matriarch. And I think, I think it's tricky. Like, why did you say that? Because I think it's scary for some people. Like, I don't know that she's all the way leaning into it yet. I want her to because it's like a beautiful, because she's young and vibrant and she does stuff and she travels and she's got a great life.
Starting point is 00:14:11 There's nothing. That's great. It's just age in your head. People who think they turn old after 50. Yeah. You're as old as you make yourself. It's like 73 hours on Dance with the Stars, the Mass Singer and all that kind of stuff.
Starting point is 00:14:28 And a lot of people would see me at the airport, Patty, you've given me courage. I said, how? By seeing you on dancing with the stars and stuff, and you're in your 70s. And I am, but I'm afraid to take chances. I said, that's the problem. People are afraid to take chances after a certain age.
Starting point is 00:14:45 I'm going to take them until I take my last step. I have to, yes. Where does that come from? Like, did somebody teach you that? Did you have to learn it? I think I was taught by my mother and my father. They were go-getters. I was laid back.
Starting point is 00:15:03 But, you know, I still had this talent. And somehow it had to come out. And so that's when I'm not shy, that talent comes out. But I am still a shy woman. This is not what I expect. I know. I'm so fascinated by that. That's why we're going to get you some wine.
Starting point is 00:15:23 You're sweet. Hey, everybody. Thank you for looking and listening. Happy early birthday. Thank you, darling. Swick. Mmm. Mmm.
Starting point is 00:15:33 So delicious. Mm-hmm. Let's go through some of these moments in your life and some of these songs. Oh, wow. Because you know, this is in real life. We like to learn the real lessons. I want to learn some of the real lessons behind some of these classic Catty LaBelle songs.
Starting point is 00:15:50 Come on. So on my own. Yes. Uh-huh. song now in 2026 and I think, man, there's women sitting in their house today. What year did you make that song? I don't know. There are a lot of remember years. I'm like that too. I can never remember years. It must have been about 20 years ago. No, maybe more. Maybe. Girl, I don't know. Does anybody know in the house? On my own. On my own. Oh, that was in the 80s, Patty. Okay.
Starting point is 00:16:22 That was 40 years ago. Wow. So you, Go ahead. Make a song 40 years ago called On My Own. I love that song. Such a, you still love it? Yes. Yeah, how could you not, right? I do.
Starting point is 00:16:43 But even when you hear that song, I was looking at, it's like, I thought everything was going to be okay, you know, like, and then it's not. And then here I am on my own. That's the way it happens sometimes, yes. And what is the lesson in that, I guess? The lesson is, if you're a lesson. Listen is, if you're lucky enough to be together and stay together, that's a blessing. I mean, I was married for 35 years to my wonderful husband, but we couldn't see eye to eye after a time.
Starting point is 00:17:14 So I became solo and he became solo. But I'm on my own without him, but I'm doing well. And so is he. So that makes you feel good when your partner that you leave or whatever breakup happens, that they're still doing well. Mm-hmm. So you pray that that person still has a good life. That's the way I think. Well, you did it well then because the breakup are not easy for a lot of people. No, they're not. And we're recording together. So we still see each other. You know, we work together. Still? Yes. All these years. All these years. There's still friendship and love and like it's family, right? It's still family.
Starting point is 00:17:52 Yeah. I mean, we gave birth to a wonderful son. He didn't. I did. Right. He didn't do that. No. Cuddles at your feet. Hi, Mr. Cuddle. Hey, baby, you're looking for mommy? Sweet, baby. So yeah, we're still friends. That's beautiful.
Starting point is 00:18:10 Mm-hmm. But that's life. It is, right? Mm-hmm. Yes, it is. It's hard for a lot of women, though. Oh, it is. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:18:18 Was it hard for you at that time? No. Even in the time? No. It's one thing to reflect on a years later, like, okay, I got through that, and it was, you know, blah, blah, blah, but when you're in the throes of big changes in life like that. We knew we had to split. So it wasn't hard. It was inevitable. We knew that we couldn't be
Starting point is 00:18:39 together as married. But as friends, yes. And then never a desire to do it again? No. You're okay with that? Honey, I'm 81. I'm getting married. You never know. I would look good. Yeah. You would be still be a fly bride. Right. But I'm, uh, I'm, I'm a, I'm living my life like it's platinum. Mm-hmm. Yes. If only you knew. If only you knew how much I am crazy about you.
Starting point is 00:19:19 I mean, that's the song that you're very much in love and you don't know if he knows it or not. It's just the lyrics of it. Like, you can't even suspect that you probably could care less about the changes that I've been going through. Because I love you so and you don't even know. You don't even know what I'm sitting here. you could be in a whole marriage, a whole relationship, you could be dating somebody for however long, and the other person can have no idea
Starting point is 00:19:48 they don't have a clue. What is going on inside? Inside. It's true. I mean, there's so many people live that life. You know, and I've never lived that life, but... You never lived? No, not like that. You say, have you always said what you...
Starting point is 00:20:03 I always say what's on my heart. You know, I'm not going to have anybody guessing. Smart. And I'm going to not keep it to myself. If only you knew. Sometimes women can get in their own heads. Oh, yes. We can do that.
Starting point is 00:20:19 So we don't say it all the time. You know, punks. You're messed up for yourself. Girl, say it. Talk about it. That's your advice. Say it. Oh, Lady Marmalade.
Starting point is 00:20:30 So they're open the hey sister, go sister, soul sister, go sister. What is a soul sister? What is the meaning of a soul? sister to you. Well, in this particular song, well, she's a hooker. Mm-hmm. And Vuli Vukh Keshavikwa means, will you sleep with me tonight? When we recorded the song, we had no clue what it was about until the song came out and was
Starting point is 00:21:02 selling and doing really well. And we got some complaints from nuns. Nuns were having a moment with Patty LaBelle and the Bluebell singing. No, LaBelle. That's when we were at LaBelle. singing about ladies of the evening. And I would just say, well, they have to make a living too. You know, I can't snatch the mattress from my number.
Starting point is 00:21:23 They got to do what they got to do. And that was a hit, not knowing it was about a hooker. And that's what a soul sister is? What is the soul sister? A soul sister. No, soul sister is not a hooker. No, no. Soul sister is just us.
Starting point is 00:21:35 We're soul sisters. Yeah. I'm in fully-rug-shame and she was doing some business. I feel like you are a soul sister to many. I sure am. I am a soul sister. What does that mean to you though? Like it means it's a, it's like a graduation.
Starting point is 00:21:51 Because when you're a baby, you're a little girl. And as you grow up and to whatever you're going to do, you become a soul, soul, soul sister. I mean, I'm a soul sister because I do soul things, soulful things. And they're going to be a white soul sister too. You don't have to be black to be a soul sister. Yeah, so I just consider myself a soul sister but not a hooker. I would hope not.
Starting point is 00:22:20 I know some people might get it twisted, you know, but that's what it is to me. That's beautiful, a soul sister. Yeah. A little too relaxed during yoga? That's embarrassing. You know what's not? Debt. Consolidate your debt with a loan from FIG, no early repayment fees and low interest rates,
Starting point is 00:22:41 so you can pay off your debt faster. Borrow better with FIG. Visit fake.ca. Hey, it's us, the Jonas Brothers, and guess what? We have some big news. What's the news, news? Huge news. We created our own podcast called, Hey Jonas.
Starting point is 00:22:54 We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts. Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts throughout there. But this one's extra special. So how do we actually come up with a name, Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember.
Starting point is 00:23:10 I think it was on a call about what we should call it. And, well, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band before Jonas Brothers. This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes. I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast, where people could call in and say, hey, Jonas. And then I wrote down on my little notepad, Hey, Jonas, and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast. But thanks for remembering that, guys.
Starting point is 00:23:38 Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guide. Not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Jim Gaffigan to Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel help an Acapella band with their between songs banter. There's the worst singer in the group. The worst? Yeah. Me. Is there anything to the idea that because you're friends?
Starting point is 00:24:12 from Harvard. You only got in because your parents made a huge donation. The group. The yard birds, right? That's the name. The Harvard Yardt. They're open. Do you have a name suggestion?
Starting point is 00:24:25 We're open. Since you guys are middle-aged. One erection. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the I-Heart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. You love me. I need some. To make me seem funny.
Starting point is 00:24:46 Keith Giamanka seemed like a mild-mannered suburban dad, but secretly, he became someone else, a master of disguise who went on a crime spree. At the time, did it seem like a crazy idea? It seemed very crazy, but I felt so desperate that I felt it was the quickest, easiest way out. Did you allow yourself to think about how it could go wrong on what that might look like.
Starting point is 00:25:14 No, I didn't want to manifest that. I was trying to manifest success. Every family has its secrets. But what happens when you discover that your dad has been living a double life? That is not the look of an innocent man. This is going to change my life and my family dynamic forever, because everything that had existed prior in my reality is now untrue. Listen to Deep Cover the Family Man on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:25:53 Soul sisters are good. You do have stuff from your soul. It's probably why you connect with so many women. I sure do. Of course, somebody loves you, baby. It's one of my favorites. Oh, yeah. But it's interesting because you're like deeply in love and somebody loves you baby.
Starting point is 00:26:17 You said you could make a slave out of me. I don't mean that. You know that's a lie. But that was the lyric. Okay. Bunny Sigler wrote that one. He put that line in. I said, I'm going to say it.
Starting point is 00:26:29 I'm going to sing it, but you can never make a slave out of me. I worship you and nobody else. I give my heart to you forever and ever and ever. Yes. That's a deep love song. You sing it like you mean that, though. You do mean it. I do mean it.
Starting point is 00:26:50 Yes. that somebody is me. Somebody loves you, baby. All the way live. Yes. But I don't know, I think now, especially, like, women are so, like, independent and don't want to, like, worshipping your man.
Starting point is 00:27:09 That kind of notion of being so... It's like giving you all to a man. Yeah. I'm not that girl. You're not. No, no. Unless it's really deep, deep love. really deep, deep love.
Starting point is 00:27:23 You felt that though before in your life, yeah? Oh, heck yeah. Yeah. I'm only human. Yes. But some of the lyrics in certain songs, like I said, I didn't write it, but I'll be a slave for you. No way will I ever be that for anybody.
Starting point is 00:27:38 You could probably sing anything, huh? Well, I try to with meaning and with understanding that it's a song. You know, like I said, Lady Marmalade, it's a song. I'm not that girl. You know, a lot of songs are beautiful and they're written. And some of the lines, you just say, God, would I really say that in certain songs? But I've been blessed to have songs that I can say every line in. What are you most proud of in your career?
Starting point is 00:28:12 My career? Well, it's not my career, but my life, I'm most proud of my son. He's better than a Grammy. How did being a mom change you, though? Like, take it. I never thought I would ever have a child. Why? Because I was into my animals, my cats and dogs.
Starting point is 00:28:32 You were about to be a cat mom, that's it. A cat woman. No, I just really never thought of becoming pregnant. And the story is, which I know Zori don't like to hear, but my friend Laura Niro, great performance. She took us to Japan, me and my mom. Japan, me and my husband.
Starting point is 00:28:53 And sorry was made in Japan. He hates that. He don't want to know. He don't want to know about that. I know, but he was made in Japan. And the best gift that I could have gotten was giving birth to him. Yeah. How does it change you though?
Starting point is 00:29:11 So what ships? You have a baby, you've been on your own. You're patty LaBelle already. You're already Patty LaBelle, right? When you have him, you already have a successful career. a successful career. So here's the idea, Angie. I couldn't take care of him.
Starting point is 00:29:23 So I had a great husband and a great, he had a great sister who took him, Aunt Mary, would take him everywhere. And they took care of him when I was, you know, on the road, which was a lot. We stayed on the road. And when I would come home, I would try to buy him things. And he said, I don't need any new shoes, mom. I don't need pants. He was humble.
Starting point is 00:29:47 And he would go and. the truck, if a limo came from me, he would go on the baggage truck. He would not ride in that limo. And today, he still doesn't tell people he's my son when we're doing business, when he's on business. And they find out later because the promoter might come in the dress room after the show to say, thank you, Ms. LaBelle. And I would say, oh, this is Zori.
Starting point is 00:30:10 He said, Zori, my son. He said, you're her son. See, he never lets people know that. He's just, which is cool. Man is like representation. Right, right. He doesn't throw around telling I'm Patty LaBelle's son. Never will you hear that from him.
Starting point is 00:30:25 Wow. Yeah, so he's just cool. And he's here now and I know he's listening. Yeah, I want to talk to you about that too. We'll get back to that too because I know you're doing such great business together. Oh, yes. Me, him and Charles and Alex love. Ooh.
Starting point is 00:30:41 Well, wrecked the buffet over there. You're okay? You want to take a little stuff? That brought some break, you could tell me. No breaks on Broadway. Look at me. I'm already like, you're, I'm blowing past you Patty. Come on now.
Starting point is 00:30:56 Come on now. Come on now. What's all your spirit these days? Like, what season is this for you? It's a good season until I look at TV. And see the world. And that's, well, it's so bad right now. So I pray a lot for me and for those who are,
Starting point is 00:31:17 going through and we're all going through. Mm-hmm. So that's on my spirit. It's scary. It's unpredictable. And it's, gosh, some of the things I can't say. But you know what I mean. Of course. Yes.
Starting point is 00:31:37 Yeah, of course. How do you find peace for yourself in it? Because you can't, you still have to have joy. Yeah, I find joy in cooking. and cleaning. And doing what I do watching TV, I'll take that remote and I click all day. I do. I mean, that's what I do.
Starting point is 00:32:00 I don't really like party. Oh, I play cards. We have card games on the weekend. That's a good time. What do you play? We play AC Doocy. Oh, I love A.C. Do you do? Yes.
Starting point is 00:32:13 Well, you can come to some of our games. Please, I will be here. And we play Pity Pat. I don't know how to play. I learned real fast. Oh, I'll teach you. I'm very competitive. It's so much fun because we have like maybe 10 or 15 people on the weekend.
Starting point is 00:32:26 Sometimes I cook. Sometimes they'll all bring something anyway. And that's so much fun when I win. Ooh, it's more fun. Girl, but when I lose, I say, I'll see you guys later. I'm going to go watch Netflix. I get so mad. You're competitive.
Starting point is 00:32:42 Right. I am competitive. Yes. So that's really. And we play cards on the road, me and my glam squat. So that's how you keep some joy, you keep some balance and not get too sucked into like, oh, we keep balance.
Starting point is 00:32:56 What's wrong with the world? Yes. Yeah. And of course we all know we're thinking the same things about what a bad place the world is in at this moment. Do you ever recall it being like this? Never. Or even close to it?
Starting point is 00:33:16 it or no? I don't think so. I mean, it could have been close, but it's never been like this. This is all the way deep. It's just scary. So when you prayed for it, what do you ask for? I ask for peace and I ask for kids not to be hungry. You see those commercials where they're starving or somebody's beating an animal and
Starting point is 00:33:41 animals all beat up and stuff. I just wish that we could be nicer. And kind in this world. That would help a lot. Yeah. You know, on the elevator? Nobody speaks. When we get on the elevator, I speak to everybody.
Starting point is 00:33:55 You do? Yeah, you have to. It's just, we're frightened. What are other things that people should do? To be a kinder or joyful, bright world? I would say just acknowledge everyone. Like nobody's not a person that shouldn't be acknowledged. We're all somebody.
Starting point is 00:34:16 And when I see people just ignoring people who have less than them, that bothers me. Cuddles is licking my ankle. No, he's not. Yes, he is. I have on lotion and he loves this lotion. Patty, you got good tones. Thanks, Carol. And all of those kind of things when you don't speak to your garbage men, when you don't speak to people, when you think you're better than someone else.
Starting point is 00:34:46 There's so many ugly things that we look at and see people go through. That's so unnecessary. Have you ever had to self-correct something about yourself that you didn't like and you had to change? I bet I have. Oh, let me see. Yeah, that I speak too much to everybody. Everybody's nice. Yeah, and I get in that trap where I think everybody's wonderful and I give everybody a second chance.
Starting point is 00:35:16 And sometimes I wish I would not have because some of it got me in trouble. Yes, but that's who I am. Yeah. Miss Love a lot. You give people too many chances sometimes. Oh, what? Yeah. Oh, I have about 10 people with me who should have been gone.
Starting point is 00:35:36 But it's hard for me to say bye. And you've never self-corrected that? You've never changed. You just stayed just like that. I stayed the same to a fault. Mm-hmm. But that's my heart. And I just let people stay.
Starting point is 00:35:54 What is that? It's crazy. That's really what it is. It's crazy. Don't you love yourself a little more than that? And I think I do. Your compassion. But I can not hurt feelings.
Starting point is 00:36:08 Huh? You're compassionate. Oh, I'm very. Like is it to a fault. Yeah. Yes. I've, I am. I am.
Starting point is 00:36:16 I'm so that girl. I know you are. But that's why I'm interested in you saying that because I'm in a place in my life where I feel like I'll give me a little history, right? So my father was not in my life, right? I thought he was dead my whole life from drugs. I found out a few years ago that he was still alive. But my whole life, I thought this man's drug.
Starting point is 00:36:37 I wasn't mad at my father for not being in my life. I thought he just had a drug problem and he disappeared or whatever. Then I found that he was alive, like not that many years. years ago. And so, but doing that made me have, it made me have compassion for everybody. Oh, he's not a bad person. He just has a problem or right. She's not, she's not mean. She's just, she wasn't treated right. She's gone through, right? She's gone through what she just died. Right. Let me give her a break. But I learned that from being a kid making excuses for a parent. That's how you learn that, right? That's learned behavior. Uh-huh. So then as my life, as I'm getting older, I'm starting to
Starting point is 00:37:16 like maybe I don't know if I want to do that so much. I want to be still kind. I still want to be like you and still have my, I want to hold on to my compassion. Yes. But I want to learn how to have some better discernment so that. I know that's hard. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:34 It's hard when you're the way you are, period. That's you, a giver. Yeah, but is there no way to, that's an, you're making me scared right now because you're making me feel like I'm always going to be like this. I'm not going to- You are. I am.
Starting point is 00:37:49 And that's not going to hurt you. I mean, that's the way you're used to be. And I'm used to being this way. So I know I'm not going to change at my age. I'm going to still be that person to give you 15 chances. I just do. And you have no regrets about that? Yes, I do, but I can't change.
Starting point is 00:38:08 So that's it. I'm that person that will walk over me sometimes because I'm not going to hurt you. But you won't. And that's stupid. Really, that's what it is, but don't call me stupid though. But I'm a little special. We're all a little special.
Starting point is 00:38:25 Yes, we are. And we're all trying to figure it out still. I know I am, but I'm going to be this girl probably until. Yeah. Yes. Do you beat yourself up? Are you like to or no? I do.
Starting point is 00:38:37 Because that, does that get easier? I don't. I fought myself yesterday big time for. For what? I'll tell you. Okay. But you did something? I did something that was just not in my favor, but I did it.
Starting point is 00:38:53 You know, it was just something. But after I did it and after today, I'm just thinking about what I did, I said, well, that's just who you are. You're never going to change. So it's giving your, it's just like coming to terms with certain things and who you are and being at peace with it. And I do. And then after I think about it, I think that I'm a little more blessed than they are. So let me continue to give and just beat myself up later, but I can't stop giving.
Starting point is 00:39:29 That's so funny. You know, today I was on the plane and I don't usually repost things like this, but you're saying this and I posted something today. What did you say? It was a meme and I felt it and what you're saying is like the same thing. It's what you give. This is for you then. Patty, maybe that's why I posted it. Maybe it was for you. What we give doesn't always return, but what we give is always what we are. True. It's just what we are.
Starting point is 00:39:57 That's, and I know you're the same way. You're not going to change. I mean, I really want to. And that's not a great thing to change. I mean, you're the way you are. You've been comfortable in your life the way you are as a giver. Yeah. That's who you are, Boo.
Starting point is 00:40:13 Thanks. Aren't ever going to change. Don't you think people can change though, Patty? Do you think that's- Oh, I think people can change, but I can't. But you can't? I can't. There's nothing you've changed in your life.
Starting point is 00:40:24 I don't believe that. Oh, yeah, there have been things, but it's hard of me to change what I'm feeling for certain people now, as far as me saying, I'm finished. It's just so hard. Yeah, so I think people call me Patty the forgiver. That's my- But that's also probably why you're so blessed and why people love you so much. I just love loving on people. I just do.
Starting point is 00:40:49 People feel that too. Yeah, and Zori's that way too. He likes loving on people too. Yes, he don't think I know it, but I know it. He does it in a masculine sense. He does a masculine version of that. Really? He's that he's that person.
Starting point is 00:41:02 And I love that he is. I'm going to take you back real quick, and then we'll wind up towards the end. When did you realize that you were special? Like, when did you realize man, I got this, like, this is going to be something. Wow. I guess after I recorded somewhere over the rainbow, I started feeling really great about myself.
Starting point is 00:41:34 And the way people responded to it. Just made me feel wonderful. Did you not grow up with that feeling? Because I always hear people who have careers like yours and gifts like yours that they always had this sense of like this purpose that they were going to be. I don't know. I never thought that. No. I never thought I would be. I thought I would be a chef. That's what I really thought I would be. But not a big, big entertainer. And the reason I feel that way with Rainbow is that it was everyone's favorite of my singing in my way. And whenever I would do
Starting point is 00:42:15 TV shows or big shows or like a BET award or the not Grammys because they didn't have me there. But whenever I would do that song, I would get such an ovation. And that's the first time I felt like, oh girl, you got it. And then how did you receive that? I need it. I need applause. Really? Oh, yes. Where does that come from? From me. Just like what? It just comes from me. I don't know what it is. I want validation. Did you need attention?
Starting point is 00:42:46 Like, well, I was so shy. I probably, like I said, I had cats and butterflies. I don't need nobody to do that. I need applause. Are you addicted to it, do you think, a little bit? Yeah, I am. When you put your heart in to anything you do and you get a great response, that feels like great.
Starting point is 00:43:08 It feels great. Are there ups and downs in that, though? Because we're all chasing something. I'm always trying to figure out like, I always stop myself and ask myself, like, what are you chasing? Why are you working so hard? Like, what do you want? What is the end goal here? Like, what do you beat yourself up?
Starting point is 00:43:22 Because I want to make sure. I want to be intentional about that. And so when you have a career like yours, like, are you thinking that way? Like, are you chasing something? Or are you just in it? I'm not chasing. I am just always going to do it. But I'm not chasing anything.
Starting point is 00:43:39 If the standing ovation comes, fine. If it doesn't, I'm still in it. You're still in it. So if it doesn't come, you're not sad. It's not like a low. Heck no. Really? Uh-uh, because there been times when there was a standing ovation.
Starting point is 00:43:51 Didn't bother me because I knew I'd give it my best. But it's like a challenge for you. Like a. Well, I don't know. Uh-huh. What do you think? I think you probably, you're a giver. And so when they stand up, you feel like you've served them.
Starting point is 00:44:10 True. This is my guess from my conversation with you. I feel like that's probably like you're a giver. You feed people, you love on people. I think so when you see people standing in ovation, you know they're moved. They're moved to a level of you've served them in some type of way. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:44:29 So it just makes me feel great to see it. And if I don't, I still feel great. You do. Yeah. When do you ever not? Because you always seem. Child, there been times when I couldn't sing, when my voice was just not there.
Starting point is 00:44:43 And I got scared. You know, I said, what is this? It was life. And it was because I worked so hard. And sometimes you work your voice away. And I'd sing my voice away. And it happened for a few months. And you got it back.
Starting point is 00:45:03 I got it back. Thank God. Yeah, I was petrified. That must have been terrible. It was bad. Do people know that? Is that like a known public thing? Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:45:13 They knew. They knew. Yes, they knew. And I was always told, you sound great. You say, I know when I don't sound great. That's so interesting because you think somebody has a gift and it's just always there. Oh, honey, it leaves when it wants to. You can't pray for it back.
Starting point is 00:45:30 You can't do anything with say, Lord, just what happened? And you don't know. And of course you go to throat doctors and vocal coaches and all that stuff, and they can't bring it. And they can't bring it back. You know, so you, you're blessed to get it back. Yes. You think of it as a gift, right? Oh, it is a gift.
Starting point is 00:45:51 Yeah. Yes. And you take care of it, I'm sure. I do. I don't smoke. I have occasional wine. I don't drink heart liquor. I don't do drugs.
Starting point is 00:46:03 I don't do anything. But have this wine and water what I want it. I mean, it's pretty good. It's pretty good. Very good. Starting point is 00:47:18 So she sent my voice, her voice note today. And she had a little question for you. That's wonderful. This is from my mother. My name is Shirley. You'll meet her at some point. Oh good. I hope.
Starting point is 00:47:27 My mother has a question. Does she get asked Patty? I can say it's from my mother. All right. So what is the question? If you could ask, all right. So if you could ask Patty a question. Patty is a question.
Starting point is 00:47:41 too. I just can't believe it. I mean, how does she manage to say so joyful and exuberant? She's always that way. Right? She has been like that since she's been in existence. Oh, wow. Yes, I can't remember ever seeing her otherwise. That was her question. How do you stay? Oh, Shirley. Yes, my mom's her birthday. July 28th, she's a Leo. Okay. Hey Shirley. I said you're exuberant and joyful too. She was like, not all the time. Ditto. Not all the time. But most of the time, I mean, I am. I always say to myself at 82, why are you still like you were when you were 40? Yeah, what is that? You have to give us the key to that, Patty. You can't. I have no clue what it is. You can't. Come on. What do you think it is? I think it's God.
Starting point is 00:48:37 Sending a spicy picture to your work chat instead of your significant other? That's so embarrassing. You know what's not? Debt? Consolidate your debt with a loan from FIG. No hassle, no judgment. Borrow better with FIG. Visit fig.ca. Hey, it's us, the Jonas Brothers, and guess what?
Starting point is 00:48:56 We have some big news. What's the news, name? Huge news. We created our own podcast called, Hey, Jonas. We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're first people to do podcasts.
Starting point is 00:49:07 Pretty wide range of podcasts throughout there. But this one's extra special. So how do we actually come up with a name, Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember. I think it was on a call about what we should call it. Oh, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band. Before Jonas Brothers was... This is how you guys remember it going down?
Starting point is 00:49:31 Yes. I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast, for people could call in and say, hey Jonas, and then I wrote down on my little notepad, Hey Jonas, and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast. But thanks for remembering that, guys. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts,
Starting point is 00:49:49 or wherever you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guide, not quite. Unhumored me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Jim Gaffigan to Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman, Help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and headwriter, Streeter Seidel,
Starting point is 00:50:10 help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. There's the worst singer in the group. The worst? Yeah. Me. Is there anything to the idea that because you're from Harvard, you only got in because your parents made a huge donation. The group.
Starting point is 00:50:28 The yard birds, right? That's the name. The Harvard yard, but they're open to change. Do you have a name suggestion? We're open. Since you guys are middle. A one erection. Listen to humor me with Robert Smygel and Friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:50:46 Humor me! I need some jokes to make me seem funny. Keith Giamanka seemed like a mild-mannered suburban dad. But secretly, he became someone else, a master of disguise who went on a crime spree. At the time, did it seem like a crazy idea? It seemed very crazy. But I felt so desperate that I felt it was the quickest, easiest way out. Did you allow yourself to think about how it could go wrong and what that might look like?
Starting point is 00:51:22 No. I didn't want to manifest that. I was trying to manifest success. Every family has its secrets. But what happens when you discover that your dad has been living. a double life. That is not the look of an innocent man. This is going to change my life and my family dynamic forever because everything that had existed prior in my reality is now untrue. Listen to Deep Cover the Family Man on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I know it's God. I mean, all my sisters died at 40 before they turned 45. Wow. And I'm still standing.
Starting point is 00:52:11 And it is because of God. I don't go to church or anything like that, but it's in my heart. I go to church and my home with myself. I don't need a minister. You pray a lot? I pray a whole lot. Yeah. Yes.
Starting point is 00:52:30 And let me get through a show, a 90-minute show, and my voice was funny before I went on, but during that show, it came back. stuff like that. And I say after that show, girl, you are truly blessed. Sounded like a frog for a minute. And then pull this together. Then something good came out. Yeah. So there's no like routines or rituals. It's just prayer and it's just what it is. Yeah. I. And I just know that I'm blessed, Shirley. And you are too, girlfriend. Yes. Lean into that. She has to. Yeah. I mean, like I said, I'm here. I do think there's a difference. Everybody says, I'm blessed. There's a difference in saying those words because it's like, oh, what a blessing. But literally waking up every day and feeling it and operating in it. Yes. And acknowledging it is different. You just carry it different when you live your life that way versus something you say all the time. And I feel like that's probably the difference for you.
Starting point is 00:53:36 I live my life this way. It's like I said, I have a lot of faults, a lot of down moments. But when I can get up in the morning, I always say, you woke me up this morning. And now with this 24 hours that I'm blessed with, depending on what time I wake up, I'm going to do the best I can with it, with the time that I have.
Starting point is 00:54:01 Because like I said, my sisters didn't have as much time as I've been given. I've been given a lot of time. That must have been hard. How many sisters did you have? Three. Three. Oh, wow. That's tough.
Starting point is 00:54:14 Yes. And they all died before they turned 45. That's outrageous. That's a lot of sadness. I know, a whole lot. What do you do with all that sadness? How do you have you managed that? You take it and you say, well, I know they wouldn't want me to feel bad,
Starting point is 00:54:31 that they're not here. You know, so I do what they want me to do on my sister, Jackie was the biggest Patty LaBelle fighter ever. If you said you didn't like me, she was going to beat you up. And she was this big, little thing. And there was four of you in the house growing up. Oh, yeah. It was four ladies, my God.
Starting point is 00:54:49 We will wear each other's clothes, try to put them back before they got back from work or whatever, so they wouldn't know that they've been worn. I guess I was clean in school, honey, wearing their clothes. Beautiful clothes. And I miss them all like crazy. So I have their pictures all around and say, gosh, what would you do if you saw me do this or do that or dance with the stars? What would you say? What would they say?
Starting point is 00:55:15 They would say, girl, you're crazy. So you still talk to them. Because I'm not a dancer. You still talk to them. Oh, yeah. You still feel connected. I am connected. Yes.
Starting point is 00:55:26 So that's probably part of your blessing. They're probably part of your. Oh, they are. They are. And my mother and father who died young. And I, like I said, I'm still standing. Wow. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:55:40 You say that now with Patty, but mind that your sisters, your parents going young, there had to be a period where that was not an easy time for you. Oh, it wasn't at all. But I did, if you asked me to the video after I buried my sister Jackie and on my shoulder in the church was a butterfly. And I love butterflies. And that was her saying, you better do that video. Because it was something in my business that I was contracted to do.
Starting point is 00:56:13 And I said, no, I'm not going to do it. So when I did it, I kicked my shoes off. I cried. So the tears in that particular video, they were real. Wow. After burying my sister, yeah. Wow. It's been some good stuff I've gotten from them.
Starting point is 00:56:31 Good, just good stuff. good advice, just good everything before they all passed. They passed it on to me. Well, they still left you with stuff even after they passed, right? Yes, they did. They still talking to you. Uh-huh, they are. What a blessing.
Starting point is 00:56:47 Yes, it is. I know you sang at Celia's service. Oh my God. I sang at her memorial. I sang Ave Maria. Her husband called me because he knew that we were buddies. And when I sing at her memorial, at the cathedral, I think that's where her services were held.
Starting point is 00:57:07 Girl, I sang that song. I felt like an angel just singing for her. At the time she was... I didn't know you guys were friends. I know you had that performance and stuff. I didn't know you were friends. Oh, that sounds like a good time. Oh, crazy, crazy.
Starting point is 00:57:21 Oh, I suco. Oh, I suco. Are you crazy? Crazy. Wonderful time. And so she was going to teach me to speak Spanish. And I was going to teach her to speak good English. I said, girl, I'm not even a good speaker of English, but I'm going to teach you.
Starting point is 00:57:36 I'm going to show you what I can. Right? And we have plans together, but she left. Yeah. What a wonderful woman. Yeah, it was a big fan of hers too. Were you? Yeah, I loved seeing the two of you together in the energy forever. Mm-hmm. How old was she when she passed about 75? I thought she was older. Really? I thought so. I thought she was older. You would know. Yeah, I thought she was older. I could be wrong. I could totally be wrong. 77 oh 77 yeah you were about right i remember that day she was some woman yeah you've had a lot of great experiences with people though i sure have i mean i have so many wonderful people in my life that were in my life um richard probably was so it was prince and michael jackson i had a moment
Starting point is 00:58:24 tell me that because this have you seen this movie isn't what i've seen it twice you did see it twice I saw it twice already too. Oh, the best movie. It's so good because it's so, I don't know, it just takes you to this one period. It makes you see him in a, the child in him in a different way. How he went through his life was amazing. And he was born with that talent.
Starting point is 00:58:48 And I watched it twice. So he and I, I was performing overseas somewhere, The Prince for some Prince or something. You and Prince was Besties, huh? No, this was another point. I think he had like a crush on you, low-key. Who, Prince? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:59:04 I knew he did. I'm only joking. But he probably did. No, he clearly did. Yeah, he took care of Miss Patty Patty. And no, it was four prints of some big old, you know those rich people. And so Michael was there. He and I sang Lady Marmalade together that night.
Starting point is 00:59:26 And I sang for him for the, oh. Oh, God, it was something. I've done a few things with Michael that were just beautiful. I can't remember the other thing. Is Lady Marmalade? Is there a video of that? Is that out? It might be.
Starting point is 00:59:40 Is that something I can search? It might be on YouTube. Patty LaBelle and Michael Jackson sing Lady Marmalade. And where were we? We were, we were we somewhere over, overseen. And what is that experience like? It was just wonderful. I said, okay, why not?
Starting point is 00:59:58 Why shouldn't he sing Lady Marmalade? with me and he did his little dance. It was just beautiful. Yeah, I have a picture of him somewhere in this house. Somewhere in the house? Mm-hmm. Yeah. I know you guys stories, I want to walk around the house and just see all the photos.
Starting point is 01:00:14 Oh, so many wonderful moments. So many, huh? You honored him, you and Darryl Cole Week sang for him at the NWCCC. What was it? Oh, yes. That song... What did she sing? Will you be there?
Starting point is 01:00:28 No, I'll be there? No. No. Da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da. Yeah. They're that one. Oh, that's song and Darry Coli. Ooh.
Starting point is 01:00:40 And here is video that. There's that, but not her and Michael singing Lady Marmalade? Yeah. I feel like if there was video of you and Michael Jackson singing Lady Marmalade, I would find, and it might be. Where were we when we perform? I don't know. South of France.
Starting point is 01:00:55 Is that very? South of France. Yes. And it was for a prince. parents, right? Right. Anyway. Oh, you probably got a lot of those.
Starting point is 01:01:05 Girl, I don't remember. I just know I've had fun in my life. I've had so many wonderful moments. And I am just... That's a good highlight reel. You got a good highlight reel of like memorable inauguration. You went to that, yeah? It's just saying for the Obamas, no?
Starting point is 01:01:25 I saw a picture of you, I believe. You never saying for them? You never sang for them? Yeah. I did. Women and sold it? Oh, I sure did. Right in his face.
Starting point is 01:01:35 That's my dog. Yeah. Right. I did. Yes, it was he, Michelle and Michelle's mother sitting in the front row. And I just gave him a little speech. I said, I am so honored to perform for Mr. Obama. I said, because you got swag.
Starting point is 01:01:51 I've had fun times in my life. Mm-hmm. I have fun times. I had great times. with Cindy Lauber, with pink, just with a lot of the young girls in the industry, with Gladys and Dion, with Oprah, just times. Good for you. All right, let's go to some business a little bit because I love that you, I love that you're
Starting point is 01:02:20 in business with your son. With my son. That's challenging for sometimes people to work with family. Well, he's my manager also. So in my rock-of-roll life. Okay, so he's all around me and with Alex and Charles and Zori. And they've always known for a fact that I could cook. So back in the day we started talking about food and the sweet potato pie was the first big thing that we did.
Starting point is 01:02:51 I remember when viral. I just snuck one in the kitchen, by the way. Oh, yeah, good. It was good. Delicious. Yes. And so right now we're doing breakfast. Oh, nice.
Starting point is 01:03:02 Yeah, because my grandkids love waffles. And so I made them for them one day. And they say, where did you buy this like from a grocery store? I said, no, boy, I made that right there in the kitchen with my hands. And they said, oh, they're so good. That's what we're doing that with the syrup, the pancakes. Gosh, we're just doing a lot of stuff. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:03:25 And of course, you know. the other stuff, the macaroni, the greens. Yeah, you have like a full food line now, right? And it's doing really well. Yeah, it's doing really well. Thank you. And syrup, yeah, she said syrup. Yes.
Starting point is 01:03:39 And I just like talking about how great that is. Yeah. And surprise. And not a surprise. I was going to say. Because it was quality. You know, when you give great food for a decent price, you feel great about your product.
Starting point is 01:03:57 So my product was something that you were fall in love with if you like good food. Yeah, I look good products and I know you do. I can't wait to try the other stuff. I only had the pie so far. You have to try the breakfast foods. Okay. Are they out? Are they on the shelves already?
Starting point is 01:04:12 Oh yeah. Okay. Oh yeah, I'm going to do that next. They're in so many stores. And what is your dream for this company? Like is this a- Oh, honey. Let's top it.
Starting point is 01:04:21 Let's go as high as anybody. Let's be the best. in this industry because we're qualified to be the best. And it's no joke. I mean, I am like. You don't think small, huh? I don't think small. No, you have to think top.
Starting point is 01:04:42 And with the three guys, with Zuri, Charles, and Alex, it's nothing but top work. They work like, oh, they work hard, promoting my mind. Yeah. And I'm happy to be with them. I trust all of them. of them. And that's a good thing in business. You have to trust who's taking care of your stuff. Hey guys, support for this podcast is brought to you by Walden University. Have you ever thought to

Starting point is 01:05:41 All right, let's go to the bowl. This is our IRL bowl. Okay. Take a question out the bowl. And if money were limitless, what would you? No, no, Patty. What would be the first thing you would buy or do? Whoa, I would buy a bunch of houses for people who can't afford them.
Starting point is 01:06:06 Aw, what did you still give me? I would. Yeah, because they're hard to buy. Yeah. They're expensive. They're very expensive. Especially now. It's limitless.
Starting point is 01:06:16 I would just do stuff like that. Take care of people. Yeah, take care of people. Mm-hmm. All people who are in trouble. Mm-hmm. What are still some of your big goals? What are some of the things you still want to do in the world?
Starting point is 01:06:32 Oh, not much. Really? I have done enough for me. I'm not a vacation girl. I don't like to travel. There's no mountain you want to climb or... Heck, no. There's no bungee jumping.
Starting point is 01:06:45 No, no darn crazy stuff. No. I'm just satisfied with my life the way it is. Wow. I want to just keep performing. and recording and doing what I do, cooking, dancing, playing those darn cards. Playing with the dog.
Starting point is 01:07:08 Yes, playing with the dogs. But there's nothing that I think of that I would want to do other than what I'm doing already. What a beautiful thing to be able to say. I really mean it. Yeah. No, but I know, but everybody wants to be at, it's peace what you're talking about, right?
Starting point is 01:07:25 I'm very much. much at peace. Like I said, when I come home, I don't want to leave to go on vacation or go someplace beautiful or whatever. This is it. Home. I am happy being home. Good for you. No regrets. Do you have any regrets? Not really. No regret. No, nothing that's important. No, I'm good. What do you think your superpower is? Cooking. Cooking. Cooking. Yeah. Really? Really. That's it. That's it. That's my superpower.
Starting point is 01:08:01 It's not how you connect with people or you're like, no. My superpower is cooking. Wow. And I made food today, I mean, yesterday, and my beauty squad, my glam squad, they tasted the food that I made and they all lost their minds. But they can only have a little bit, because I only had a little left. I wish I was here. I had to eat. I know you go leftovers in the fridge because I don't know.
Starting point is 01:08:26 I will take a left over. They took them. Right? What do you like most about yourself besides your cooking? What do you like more? I love my voice. I love my singing voice. Yes.
Starting point is 01:08:39 What is one thing that you hope never changes about you? My heart. I hope my heart never changes. I hope I continue that I will continue to give. And I don't want that to change. Like I said, sometimes, Sometimes it's to a fault. But I don't mind.
Starting point is 01:08:59 You've come to terms with that, right? Yes, I have. That's who I am. I'm going to work on that. I'm going to work on that for myself. You will. I'm not at to terms with that. I'm still trying to fight it.
Starting point is 01:09:08 I'm like, no, I need better for me. You got it, girl. You got it. Big. Oh, he has a bad cough too. All right, baby. So Cuddles. Okay.
Starting point is 01:09:24 No, he has, his larynx is collapsing. collapsing. Yeah. Poor baby. That's tough. Do you want me to get him? You want me to get him? I get him. I get him. I'll get him. Relax. Don't get him.
Starting point is 01:09:45 You want to hold him? Yeah. Oh, you want me to hold him? Oh, you want me to hold you? I'm on camera. We're going to get this. You see. You okay? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:10:02 Are we going to wrap up with cuddles in the shot? Yeah. Yes. Cuddles was hanging on to be seen. Oh, my God. Look at Cuddles. Is he okay? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:10:12 So sweet. He's not well, you know. But he's hanging. He is hanging in there. God bless. Triple O.G over there. He sure is. All right, this is our final one.
Starting point is 01:10:27 If God would have sent you a text on your phone right now, you got. You still got a flip phone, Patty? I got that flip purple phone. I don't text. You don't text? No. I don't have a DM or whatever that stuff is. I don't do that stuff.
Starting point is 01:10:41 Please, I can't take it if you had a DM. That would be nuts. Right? I'm just a phone girl, regular phone. You talk. You talk to people. Yes. Okay.
Starting point is 01:10:51 Are you a talk on the phone? No, I hate to talk on the phone. So how do you stay connected with friends and family? Because if they call and I don't feel like talking, I'll say I'm getting massage. I might tell a little white, Yeah, I don't like talking on the phone. Plus, I'm saving my voice most of the time. So having conversation is not good for me.
Starting point is 01:11:13 Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Takes your voice away. Yeah, I can't believe you're going back in the studio. Oh, I have to. Girl, it's been so long since I've done our R&B album. So what is the- And most of it is done? And what is the goal there?
Starting point is 01:11:26 Like, what do you, is it just because it's on your spirit? Is it because- It's something that should have been done many years ago. So I'm long overdue. Yeah. And where do you hope that lands in the world? Like what do you make? It's going to land a triple triple platinum.
Starting point is 01:11:39 That's what it's going to land, girlfriend. Okay. Do you have like plans for it to tour and like, is it a whole thing? Everything. I never stopped touring. Never ever stopped touring. So I plan to do all that. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:11:54 While you're taking care of Mr. Cuddles and doing your food business. I'll be doing everything. You don't stop one thing because you have more things. your plate, you continue to do it all. Mm-hmm. Yes. So if God were to text you right now, this is our final question. If God were to text you right now, even though you don't text, you got a text, and it was God, right?
Starting point is 01:12:15 And he texted you. Uh-huh. What would it say? It would say, don't stop what you're doing, baby. Keep it up because you're doing it well. That's what God would say. Here's to you. If I had a hand, I hold my glass.
Starting point is 01:12:29 Don't let go on the dog. I got to hold the baby. Don't let go with the dog. You are doing it well, Ms. LaBelle. Oh, thank you, honey. I love you so much. I love you too. It was an honor to spend time.
Starting point is 01:12:38 Was it? Very much. Okay, good. I know you never stopped touring, but what about the Queens tour? What is... Oh my gosh. This is the second half of the Queens tour. Okay.
Starting point is 01:12:47 We toured about two months ago. Now who's on the tour for people who don't know? Here's the ladies. That's on the tour. Stephanie Mills, Gladys Knight, Shaka Khan, and Patty Lobel.
Starting point is 01:13:00 And we're doing This weekend also. This weekend. Yes. No, in Texas. And I need to get to that show. I don't remember where I'm going. I just know I'm going.
Starting point is 01:13:11 And this is the last three shows of the Queen's Tour. Wow. What has that been, what is that experience been like? It's been wonderful, but you can't get a chance to watch them because we all have like 45 minutes and the next act goes right on and next goes on. So when you go there, you do your part and then you leave the building, go back to the hotel, but I sneak sometimes and I'll get there early to see Gladys and Steph. And we just have fun, but we never get a chance to chit-chat because we're all right on behind each other and running. Yeah. But it might be nice to have that.
Starting point is 01:13:50 It is for four black women to do what we do. And we do it like with no egos. No one's trying to outdo anyone. We just sing. What is the key to that? I think you're all probably really secure. Because we're all secure and who we are. And there's no competition, none. And I would do it again. You would? And we might do it again. You need to.
Starting point is 01:14:16 Yes, I think we will. You always talk, we always talk about how you poured into everybody. Who poured into you? Nina Simone. Really? Yes. Oh, please. She did.
Starting point is 01:14:27 She would talk to me all the time about looking for the better. In other words, if I was drinking wine, And they would bring it to me in a paper cup. She said, oh no, darling, no, crystal for you. And since then, there's been no paper cups. If Nina Simone said it. And she's serious. She was serious. She was my friend.
Starting point is 01:14:49 She was your friend. We talked every two weeks. Wow. She would be in London or somewhere overseas. And she would just call me and we would just talk. She said, you should find a man for me yet. I said, no, boo, nobody's worthy. For real, she was that girl. Just wonderful moments with her.
Starting point is 01:15:10 And she was like, you need the finer things. Oh, yeah, fluff up. But Nina, she outright just told me no plastic cups, no paper cups, crystal dieting. I said, okay, and I've been doing crystal. This is crystal. Hey. I expect nothing else. To you, my dear. To you, Ms. LeBelle. Mm-hmm.

And here's something that should be a whole lot easier than it is, getting a new one put up in its place. I'm Akela Hughes, and Rebel Spirit Season 2 is about both of those things. As I was watching these statues come down, I was thinking about what it meant that I grew up in a majority of Black City,
