What is something you've had to unlearn about love?
That it's earned.
That I was unworthy of love.
That it needs to be forever for it to count.
February is the month of love.
Whether you're in a relationship, casually dating, or proudly single, it's a great time
to reflect on yourself and what you want.
I'm Hope Woodard, host of the voiceover podcast, and each week we're looking at love

Yeah, I wrote, Freak Me, Baby.
Lose control.
Speak slow for them.
Talk slow to them, man.
Let me get you come on.
Let me lick you up and down.
Do you say and stop?
Oh, go.
Yeah, yeah.
Joe Crack the Dawn, A.K.
Colonel Avert.
Rest in peace
to my big brother.
You know what it is
your boy Jada Kiss.
You know what it is
the Joe and Jada show.
Every show legendary.
Every show iconic.
I can't guarantee your safety.
When we talk about
today's guests,
a lot of things come to mind.
Timeless.
Classics.
Somebody that
grind it from the bottom.
My top five dead or alive.
You know that.
Turns nothing into something into a lot of something
into a plethora of success.
Biggest in the motherfucking game.
Songwriter.
Genius.
Businessman.
Ability to break groups.
Smarter than everybody.
One of the flies niggas ever in the world.
That's fucking right.
Ladies and gentlemen,
without further ado, make some noise for our guest.
They keep sweat.
What's up, what up, what up, baby.
What up?
What's up, brother?
How you doing, baby?
Long time, no sleep, man.
Yeah, you know, you know.
You know how we used to do it.
That's a history.
We're going to get into there, yeah.
Now, I want to hear that all frit.
Like, you were telling me a story behind it.
Before we even go corporate style, young kids, I'm in the studio,
bad boy, they're working on a Lavert sweat and
Gil out.
So,
G.
I was pinning some bars,
as I was telling you earlier.
You know what I mean?
For somebody,
a dice game breaks out.
My brother right here.
You know that go,
Jeff and Gerald got the bank.
Now, every, I'm like,
oh, yeah,
I'll give me some of this R&B money
the night, baby.
If I, the last thing I,
if I don't finish the soul,
I'm going home with some rat.
They sleep on R&B.
They think you on B.
You might be.
They got that shit
on silk linen,
they end the whole student,
everybody. Bunny rabbits.
Rabbit is the whole junior mafia.
We don't like.
Your sweat, you even feel sorry for these guys
you took all their money?
That's that Harlem shit, huh?
I took their money as they year.
I talked to you out later.
That's a fact.
It is.
I never forget it, dog.
You can't tell me I was going to go home.
I didn't even care if I feel.
Minutes the sessions.
I got some money from Gerald and Keith today.
Sike, they aired me.
I'm talking about to the bones gristle, man.
Yeah.
The whole studio, though.
We cleaned the damn whole stew out.
So you've been a gambler your whole life?
You was always nice to shoot dice.
Yeah, I'm good at that.
You know, I used to tell, when I used to go on tour and go to the casinos,
I used to tell everybody better on me.
Everybody made money.
Who used to bed?
against.
Like, other R&B
singers at the tour or just
at that casino?
I'm good at Crap Table,
casino.
Any of that I'm good.
That's crazy.
I remember when I wasn't
talking to JZ or O.G.
Juan, I go down to Atlantic
City with Chris
Gotti. And you know, I don't
gamble for nothing. He does.
I caught beginners.
I was rolling for like an hour
straight. It was like seven. We just
kept winning. That boy, Juan,
couldn't bet. He's on the other table. He looks sick like a puck.
He's like, damn, this dude got the roll of a lifetime. I mean, I was literally on there for like
an hour. That's it. One thing is crazy about the casino. When you win, they don't want to give
you your money, huh? They don't want to give you your money. They want to comp. Listen, they want
to cop their money. I had the biggest rooms than ever at the Mandalay Bay because they would
comp, comp, comp, comp. They fucked up with me. One time they cop me, the biggest suite is the only
time my grandmother ever left the Bronx.
She never left the block in like 80-something years.
I gas said to go to Atlantic City with me.
She's looking out the window like his marshes.
Like she couldn't believe it was so beautiful.
She never been in the shit.
So we in there, them they were sending me lobster, steaks, all type of shit.
I don't know nobody.
They kept coming up to the room.
You ready to go downstairs?
Mr. Joe.
I was like, no, chilling.
We eat lobsters, we champagne, everything.
They were like, Mr. Joe, you ready to come down.
I was like, man, I might have played a couple of slots on the niggas and broke out.
Like, they got, they lost with me.
I'm telling you that.
That's like an all you can eat buffet.
They lost.
Sweat, man.
Let me tell you something.
You're one of my idols.
You're one of my biggest inspirations.
You know, I'm thinking driving down here, well, passenger down here in Mayer's car.
And I'm just thinking, like, I remember when I fell in love with you.
your music, I never even thought I would meet you in my life.
Like, just to meet you. You know what I'm saying?
And the fact that we're friends, you know, is surreal to me.
Who's like that for you? Like, you know, I love Keith's where I bring you to every party.
I think, you know, who's like that for you that was out before you that you can't believe you became cool with or you love like that?
I was a few people, J.G.,
J.G., Jani Gill, you know, when I met Gerald, you know what I'm saying?
It was like Eddie Lavert when I met them.
Eddie Lavert.
You know, I grew up listening, you know, Cassanova was one in our joints.
You know, so I ain't ever been friends.
You know, that's my all of them shit.
That's my all of shit right here.
You got the words.
Yeah.
So, so when I, you know, when I first came out, like, everybody used to go to the holiday
they, you know, journey full.
Root 4.
In the Root 4.
So, you know, that's why you spent a lot of time
when I had to hear reggae.
God damn.
That much...
You know, because, you know, you take the girl...
You take the girl on the Route 4.
So that's how I met LaVird, not Mark.
I met Mark.
You met him at Route 4?
Yeah, at the holiday end, that holiday in,
they used to be a Route 4, right?
I need a new one, by the way.
Everybody used to go that one back in the day.
You know, I was saying?
It's like, you know, right off the turn, right?
Right there.
So that's why I met Mark.
They were standing there and they had a show at Del Apollo.
And I went to the machine
because I came out through and went to the snack machine.
It would get a little sudden.
And I said, oh, man.
That was what, I wanted had just dropped.
It just had came out.
I said, oh, man, damn, you Mark from the Verc.
Yeah, so yeah.
And he said, you know, Mark had the dark shades on.
You know how Mark was.
He had got dark shades on.
He said, yeah, I'm Keith Sweat.
He said, Keith Sweat.
He said, Keith Sweat out, that name's something for me.
Yeah, I got the little record I called I Warner.
He said, oh shit, that's Joe
Favorite record. We got a show at
the Apollo tonight with the
Whispers. He said, you should come by.
So I came by. That was my
first time meeting,
Jell and, you know, Sean
and all of them. So, you know what I'm saying?
And then once we met each other, we became the best
of friends. We became like brothers and, you know,
because I never thought, you know, I was
big friends or the old Jays and
the verse or used to go to Cleveland
all the time and stay at the house and everything.
So for them, that was
Johnny and him was like, that's why I put the LSG thing together
because they were all my, or was my two favorites.
Yeah.
Wow, I didn't know that, but Johnny killed.
I was going to Apollo, though, for you,
when you say you went and pulled up on them after Apollo for me,
when I think of the Apollo, I'm not sure if I turned.
I was even turning 11, I was even 12 or 13.
And I'm like, for my birthday, I don't know what I asked for,
for that particular birthday.
But you ended up at the Apollo.
My mom and my dad,
for you suckies that didn't grow up with two parents
and you think it's a bad thing.
They took me to the Apollo.
Is you, heavy deep,
and LL.
It was the best show model.
I'm like, what I'm going to do with a concert?
My mom's right here, my father's right here.
This shit was amazing, dog.
You killed, is left a lifetime.
memory on me for ever.
Just sweat L L L and L.
The Apollo shit was incredible.
I would never forget it.
They ripped me.
Yeah, that was my first.
It was crazy because my first tour
was with Heavy Diener Boy,
Salt and Pepper and myself.
That was my first tour.
You know, shout out to Salt and Pepper.
They just won the award in the Hall of Fame.
Yes, yes, yes.
Yeah.
I was so proud of them.
You know, let me tell you something.
I did some shows with Salt and Pepper
But in the women, it's 99.
It definitely ain't Fat Joe fans at that show
because the women is 99% come out for, I mean, there is no men.
And the whole audience is just women.
Three guys one up in there, the here flows up.
You know what I'm saying?
So Salt and Pepper, man, I'm so proud of them.
We love them, man.
And, you know, Heavy Dee, that's another one of my idols.
You know, I got to be real cool.
We have Heaven come to Miami and hang out with us.
I remember the first time I met him
the same situation like a Labert
I'm at Tavenan on the green
they were throwing them ill parties
and I'm using the
restroom
and the door opened
and somebody going you gotta flow Joe
I turned around the fucking heavy D
almost pissed on myself
I couldn't fucking believe it
I was like yo Evans man
my fucking I do man
he walked in and we got cool
and we went to eat after that
and I was just like
yo heavy D
Like to me, that was like...
That was that era, man.
That was the best error.
You know, we had Mike Epps on here, and Mike Epps gave...
I told him, what's your top five comedians?
He didn't mention Dave Chappelle.
His excuse for not mentioning it was right on.
Because he says, you know, me and Chappelle the same era.
I got to mention Richard Pryor.
I got to mention the old school guys that was before us who inspired us.
That's how I feel.
I can see here and say,
JZ, but we are for the same error.
When they asked me, I got to say
LL, KRS,
you know, that's that era before us.
These are guys we used to look at what we didn't even think
we would ever be a rapper or be successful.
So, you know, when I'm at Heavy D, man,
I used to try to dance like Heavy D.
I still try to dress like Heavy D.
Today I'm Gerald LaVeur, though, rest of the people.
As Lee.
I heard some stories about Gerald O'Rour.
He had the ladies, man.
Gerald Lerner, girl, you know,
There ain't nothing I won't do for you.
The guys ain't giving it up like that no more.
Like, they're not singing to the women like...
I don't know you feel about the state of R&B.
Or is it even a state?
I feel like they're trying to do away with the kind of music
we was raised and grew up on the texture of it.
Like, what I said about R&B now is some of the R&B artists,
they want to rap.
They want to be rappers.
Because, you know, my attitude is R&B is supposed to be full play.
Like when you're breaking up, making up with your girl, you want to play something fly.
You know, because if you are going to scream, I'm going to, fuck you.
Then you put an R&B record on.
The R&B record saying the same thing.
You don't add more confusion.
The R&B record cursing that all to y'all to you, do you know what I'm saying?
So the R&B record is supposed to calm you down.
Listen, baby.
I can't say what I want to say to you.
So I'm going to let this record say it.
You know what I'm saying?
So we need to calm this shit down, have a real conversation.
Because if you, it's, I'm going to fuck you and hit me over the head and the R.B.
records talk about all that.
You're like, yo, let's get, you want, it's a fight.
It's still a fight.
Let me tell you something.
This shit got out of head about two years ago.
So I'm used to listening to LL doing it and doing it well.
Doing, you know, the guy and girl, you know, I need love or you're all sure.
I need you, every time.
They start to
fuck me,
nigga,
piss the with me
while I'm fucked with the dick,
like a glowrilla
and a money bag or something.
Like, they started going,
like, I'm like,
what the fuck?
It's going on,
pissing with me and choke me,
nigger and spit in my face.
When you this,
this,
I hold your dick.
I'm like,
I hold your dick while you pee.
I'm like,
yo,
this shit out of control.
Like,
this ain't doing it well.
This ain't not this shit.
I'm like,
yo,
this is the new.
This is.
The new Bonnie and Clyde?
No, no, I'm dead serious.
You know, this ain't gonna...
I can't do that because he's right.
No, I'm right.
It's a better way to describe it.
Just with me, nigga, you took me.
I'm like, you know.
But that's what they said.
I am confused.
You know the emoji, your head blow?
I'm like, yo, this is crazy.
And then they're sampling my shit.
You turned into that, kiss.
And they're sampling my shit to say the same shit on my shit.
I'm like, oh, my shit wasn't meant to be that.
That's a fact, man.
Don't do that to that classic material.
Let me tell you something.
Keith Sweat and Jeter Kiss, I've noticed right now they got something in common.
They got like the same humor.
I said, yeah, no problem.
Joe, send it over because there's people were trying to front,
but I knew once I get Keith on the phone.
Was it you I was talking to?
He was like, well, you know.
I said, okay, don't worry, you'll get a phone call.
Fucking Keith Sweat.
Call that motherfucking two minutes.
I'm like, that's your crap.
We cleared it.
He said, send me this song, Joe.
I sent it to him.
Goddamn, you jacked my own fucking song, big.
You're singing every word of mine, Joe.
This is going to cost you right here.
I said, yo, sweat, whatever the fuck you want.
You got it, baby.
But, because we had the best of the best coming on this show.
That was one of the greatest answers to any question.
I have asked where you say,
yo, the R&B is the foreplay,
you know, you can't, everything can be, fuck you just.
He assessed it and described that.
That's perfect.
I was the perfect sweat, man.
Let me tell you something.
But you're my theme song, man, for my life.
That nobody.
I used to draw because I was scared to fly.
And you know, when you meet your wife for the first time
and you get that song,
we have everybody dizzy
in the Lexus.
We keep playing nobody
10,000 times
from fucking the Bronx
to Miami.
24-hour drive.
Nobody, baby.
Is that the biggest song
you ever put out
or you got a bigger one?
Then,
uh,
make it less and nobody
are the biggest,
you know,
maybe Twisted,
nobody,
make a last.
The Mega Las album.
Twisted is dead.
It is my favorite.
All of those shit is forever.
Oh, no.
No, I did the 20th anniversary.
You was there lean back.
And he could have did whatever.
I said, nah, Keith.
I wanted him to come out the side and go,
Girl, I've been thinking about you all day.
Oh, that shit, crazy.
The way you started that record, girl, like,
how do you get that shit right on time?
They didn't have pro two.
He came in lit.
It was perfect.
They had no pro twos.
That's the start, girl.
I mean, that's your take off immediately.
Genius is an understatement.
Facts.
Let's not even talk about Key Sweat.
Let's talk about the songs you wrote
because people don't really understand
all the hit records you've written for everybody else.
And you've got to be very unselfish
to give other artists smash hit records.
Yeah, I wrote Freak Me.
Freak me, baby.
Lose control
When me and you up and down
Let them stop
Keep tell them a couple boys
No no but you gotta sit and give them a little bar
If you keep
Because some of these people
They slow for them
Talk slow to them
Man, let me get a couple of them
Let me lick you up and down
To you say you stop
Boom
Boom
Boom
Boom
Bove
What else you
Freak me baby
He wrote match
Just got paid
Oh my God

Let's chill
I wrote with Teddy
And Bernard Dash
Let's chill
I know that
Because somebody said
They cleared
They had to stop by
Keep Sweat Office
I knew he wrote
Less shit
Let's chill
Wow
Let's chill
Like

Oh day

Half of the LSD album.
Yeah, half of the LSD album.
I wrote all my hits.
You know what I'm saying?
So...
Yeah, how?
All right.
No, no, no.
It's very, very important.
I wrote Drew.
I wrote on Drew Hill first album.
What you wrote from Drew with?
I shared my world.
Oh, shit.
Fendi very underestimated Jewelier.
They got bomb classics.
I think Cisco dancing and they're doing all that shit, you know,
throwing them off for the, you know.
Like, you know, I'm,
shout out the Jew Hill, Jagged Edge.
I'm going Jagged Edge because, you know,
they throwing the Army shit on and the furs.
And, yeah, every guy got to dance and shit, you know.
Shout out the Jew.
You know, you go to Keith Sweat.
Shout out of the Jagged Edge.
I remember going to fucking.
The key sweatshaw, I'm damn near upper deck.
You had the bed in the middle of all.
Madison Square Garden.
Yeah, the bed came up on, I give all my love to you.
I give all my love to you, y'all.
Yeah, I used to walk up to the top and get on the bed,
the bed go down like this.
Yeah, that was on the triple thread to him.
That was an amazing.
He was doing shit like that.
How many years ago was that?
Man, that's just weird.
years ago.
This fucking key sweat.
Key sweat,
you know where I want to go?
They get mad at me, right?
I'm 55.
I don't give a fuck.

They said the 15 wine, celery shit.
I said,
my tickets now. I'm going to see Jimmy
Jam. He's going to talk about all the songs
he wrote. And you know, my favorite
band of all time. It's
SOS band. Okay. Yeah.
I recently found out
Jimmy Jam rolled all that
shit.
Just be good to me.
Woo!
Yo!
I'm pulling up.

Welcome to the A building.
I'm Hans Charles.
I'm Minilic Lamoma.
It's 1969.
Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr.
have both been assassinated.
And Black America was out of breaking point.
Riot and protests broke out on an unprecedented scale.
In Atlanta, Georgia,
at Martin's Almemata, Moore House College.
The students had their own protest.
It featured two prominent figures in black history,
Martin Luther King Sr.
and a young student, Samuel L. Jackson.
To be in what we really thought was a revolution.
I mean, people were dying.
1968, the murder of Dr. King, which traumatized everyone.
The FBI had a role in the murder of a Black Panther leader in Chicago.
This story is about protest.
It echoes in today's world far more than it should, and it will blow your mind.
Listen to the A-building on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
What do you do in the headlines don't explain what's happening inside of you?
I'm Ben Higgins, and if you can hear me, is where culture meets the soul, a place for real conversation.
Each episode, I sit down with people from all walks of life, celebrities, thinkers, and everyday folks, and we go deeper than the polished story.
We talk about what drives us, what shapes us, and what gives us hope.
We get honest about the big stuff, identity when you don't recognize yourself anymore, loss that changes you, purpose when success isn't enough, peace when your mind won't slow down, faith when it's complicated.
Some guests have answers.
Most are still figuring it out.
If you've ever felt like there has to be more to the story, this show is for you.

I heard some stories about you behind the city.
Is it you or is it?
No, no, it's Keith Sweat.
You're a good businessman, obviously, if he got you.
But it's key sweat.
Did you go through a lot of bullshit early to learn, you know, to get shit tightened up and...
I think he was smart.
They were being very stern or you came in.
I went through a little bullshit.
Not everybody.
Not, not, not, not what everybody...
Not raping you records.
Nah, no.
I wouldn't...
Nah, I wouldn't...
I can't throw the flag.
Yo, we had a meeting the other day.
He said...
He went through that.
Jada kiss was like...
This feels like all over again.
I said, this guy's traumatized.
This guy, 30 years later, they did some shit to these dudes.
I was like, yo, Jada, calm down.
Calm down.
I thought the real gangsters.
This ain't that and that ain't this.
I thought the real gangsters kill you, rob, you all that.
I never knew they had contract gangsters.
I've never got robbed.
John Gotties of contracts.
Tons of jury, whatever you want to name, mountains of money.
What's his name?
What a nigga pull out of gun on me?
What's that guy?
What's the guy?
The lawyers are robbing down.
They told you what?
Is his name?
Jelly Bing.
Oh, he robbed me for like 20 million.
Yeah.
He came to me on the Latino shit.
Yo, we Latino.
I'm going to watch your back, yo.
Sign your publishing.
I'll take care of you.
I've discovered Madonna out there.
That nigga, raping you records.
He robbed me for like 15 years.
You know how I found out.
I did a soundtrack for,
movie and to me at the time
it was big money. I was like, yo, I need $150,000.
You know, I'm on fire. I'm thinking
I can't, you know, I come
for $500 a show. Right.
I'm getting them for $150. They said, hold up.
You know, you're publishing. He wants $3.50.
I said,
who, what? It was like, yeah,
Jelly Bean Benitez went to allow you to be on this soundtrack.
He wants $3.50. I think I'm robbing
him for $150. That's when I was saying, oh, no, we got
to find this dude. Because, you know,
he wasn't in the same surveys.
And it was in Malibu and all that.
We had to catch them outside of the awards show.
It would be like, your brother, the gigs are.
These lawyers know both parties.
So they got their friends over here.
They act like they're your friend over there.
So they put these little things in the contract that, you know,
because they're supposed to have watch your back.
I got two lawyers going after.
I'm going to put it right there.
I'm going to get that ass, though.
Because they slick.
So I just got to, you.
You know, be slick.
So I got to get that.
They robbing me now.
The lawyers, I got some allegedly, I don't know if I could see that.
I got some serious.
I got some serious friends who, thank you.
I got some serious friends.
And I don't care if we in dinner or whatever.
He's fucking lawyers.
But I never understood that.
I felt like you do your job.
I pay you this and this.
Right now, I'm like,
Like, these fucking lawyers, like, yo, these lawyers.
So you're going through the same thing I'm going through right now.
They're the biggest crooks I've ever seen in my life.
But, you know, some of them, when they're doing what they're doing,
you know, they can lose their license because they really.
Man, I don't know about that.
Nah, they're going to, yeah.
They got to do a lot to lose their life.
What I'm telling you is, like, if you doing things,
knowing you're doing things and you catch them, you know what I'm saying?
It's like if they're representing both parties, that type of shit.
We caught this one, nigga, 20 times, Keith.
He still ain't get fun.
Well, let me tell you to you.
Half of the time they represent both parties,
but you don't know they represent both parties.
You know what I'm saying?
Because they finagling in the contract
where you don't know they represent this party and that party.
So they can't be serving your best interest.
And their job is to serve your best interest, right?
And if you go to the corner and say,
they didn't have my best interest at hard.
And they finagle me because they were friends over here
and they didn't serve my best interest.
Half of the time,
if you go to the right, get the right job.
and go to the right play.
Because a lot of times they put it in the contract,
we will only settle this in this state or this whatever.
It ain't powerful.
Right.
So basically what it is,
if you're doing business in any state,
whether the land or whatever,
if that business is being done in that particular state,
you can sue in that particular state.
You know, all that shit about we got to go to Connecticut
to settle in all that.
These guys, man, let me tell you some.
I could tell you guys, 1 million percent.
You need an attorney.
Don't sign no paper without an attorney, but these guys are cool.
Let's just say they get paid well.
They want the bag.
Who he said?
Don't sign the paper without an attorney?
Yeah, I won't sign the paper without an attorney.
Even if you sign an attorney, you better check another attorney.
The attorney attorney.
Attorney for an attorney.
Right.
Did you hear BIA?
I got lawyers watching lawyers.
It's the truth.
No, you got to have.
Because the attorney, half these attorneys are friends with these record companies and whatever.
So they, boy.
So you got to have an attorney, watch the attorney.
You can't have this.
Like, you have to have an attorney who don't know this attorney to be.
It's almost like, Julie I do now.
I have to get robbed 50,000.
Julius is crook.
I got a girl.
She's been my attorney maybe 10 years.
And everybody I work with, they're like, yo, you need a bigger time attorney.
You need this.
I said, listen, she's.
Somebody that's for you.
You know you.
and don't rob and she's smart
and I'm fucking with her.
Right.
And every attorney you know,
try to have a meeting with me, Joe.
Like, you know, I'm like,
well, I've been through them fast talking niggas.
I'm good.
Let me stay with my girl.
She watched my back.
She may be a little bit slower
than them, being like in speed.
But she got your message.
She's a mother.
Oh, no.
She's not playing with it.
But these other guys, you use them for Eddie.
Oh, my God.
I'm dizzy.
These niggas said,
Happy New Year.
They gave me a bill.
No, if I tell you the matter of fact, when we get off the air,
I'm going to tell you this lawyer bill.
You're going to smoke 40 blunts for me.
You and K going to roll them shit stuff and smoke 36 therapy blunts.
You're going to be like, give me the whole bonnet chronic.
I can't be 55 paying this shit.
I'm supposed to be on my retirement gatherings, niggins.
You're supposed to be looking like Gerald Burr.
Look.
They're trying to wipe me out.
Look, look.
Just the least I could do.
They get mad at me.
Like you, you spent too much money on clothes.
I'm saying, fuck you.
I'm working for this fucking money.
I'm going to be fly till I die.
Like, look at, yo, Keith, you look fucking amazing.
Thank you, my brother.
And I tell him every time I FaceTime here,
I tell him all the time.
Every time I FaceTime, Keith, he on a fucking machine running 30 miles
but out.
You think you work out.
You call Keith sweat anytime in the morning.
Nigger like the incredible whole.
He's gone, bro.
And the fucking him,
he don't jog on the trail.
He ain't walking.
He's gone.
All systems go.
That's why he looked great.
Movement is medicine.
Now you're tapping in the Afro beats.
What's going on with that?
Yeah, that's the new R&B, babe.
I feel that.
I feel the new...
Because, you know,
the R&B had changed so much.
I just wanted something that made you feel good.
That made you, you know, because Afrobee got that.
Yeah, it got that.
that whole vibe, you know, no matter where you're at, out the country.
In the country, you're like, oh, shit, that's it.
It feels like, don't scurl.
Don't stop me love.
So that whole Afrobeat thing got a whole vibe to it.
So that's what made me tap into that because, you know, I always love Applebee.
I always love it.
But the music is central.
It's sexy, sensual.
And, you know, it just says all the right now.
So that's why I tap into it.
I always love this, though.
It just feels like it's just.
be me.
Me too.
You know, Africa's so big.
I always knew that shit was going to blow on another level when I'm out there.
I thought you was about to say,
I feel like to say Afo Beach started in the Bronx.
Ow!
We might have...
Hold up.
No, hold up.
No, hold up.
No, don't co-sign that shit.
Listen, we might...
Let me say something.
We might have more Africans.
Definitely.
In the fucking Bronx.
You don't.
Anywhere else.
In Africa.
I wouldn't say Africa,
but the Bronx is African-mania.
Like, we got Africans all over in the Bronx.
I'm not saying African-American straight.
People from Ghana got bone from fucking Zemonga.
They're in that motherfucker in the Bronx.
There are no more Puerto Ricans in the Bronx.
It's all in that.
It's Africa.
You know how we like tours, right?
Mm-hmm.
he got the R&B lovers
to all come.
No, how are you like going?
Look who he got.
Look who's on the bill.
Joe, Drew Hill,
genuine,
cut close.
Cut close.
That's great.
You really get up.
You wrote that shit, huh?
Get up on it.
That's one of the greatest.
That's classic.
Yo, cut close.
All right, this is what I was asking
before the man detoured me, right?
To help you get to this question.
A man told me to Africa, man.
Let me tell you something.
Creating music is something you got to be born with.
How did you know the woman to put on the duets with you?
Like, they're just as good as you, bro.
Right, man.
What was the name, Athena?
Athena Cage.
Jesus.
Let's give it up for Athena Cage.
Yo, man, like, how do you pick?
Because all these girls singing back to you.
It was just perfection.
Every one.
If you cut close, perfection.
Everything, when you come in,
I like the way you had.
You thought they'd kill that shit.
You come real freaky, baby.
But how do you pick the perfect people that are?
Like going to the studio, listening to them,
saying if you know, if I say sing this,
saying if they can follow my lead on stuff
because, you know, like, if you're having a hard time
riffing on some shit that I'm giving you,
like, you ain't the one.
But if you can, ooh, when I heard her wrist was so like,
oh, my God, so incredible that I'm like,
okay, I can write anything for this girl.
You know what I mean?
Yes.
So when I came up with, if you really, really want it,
and she said, I like it when you get real big of that.
You know what I'm saying?
So she made me want to sing it like that.
You know, like it, girl, win a week.
So she made me want to sing it like that.
You know what I'm saying?
Oh, freaky, baby.
No.
What's talking that shit?
I step on stage.
Girl screamed like a geese.
You never mentioned how many fucking hip-hop records?
Your man, Drake, I'm a light skin, key sweat.
Right.
I mean, how many rappers them mention key sweat
and they songs and all that.
And how you feel about that when you hear the record
and they talk in that Keith sweatshit?
I mean, it's like it just showed me
the generations that I've touched.
You know, like when I was talking to somebody,
they were telling them, I don't touch the mamas.
No, no, I'm going to tell you something.
The daughters, the little kids, the little kids.
Right, I'm going to tell you something.
Because I watch everything you do.
You popped out in a plies show
where the oldest person was 23, 25.
And broke.
And it's something.
every fucking word.
Even Fat Joe, your number one fan
wouldn't be able to bet.
If we had to do hard rock bets,
there's no way I would have said.
Every 23 year old would know
every single key sweat.
It's impossible.
The whole stadium starts singing every fucking word.
Like, that got to feel amazing.
Yeah, that shit was crazy
because when I went on the stage,
I was supposed to hit, sing nobody, too.
I was supposed to be a special guest
and come on and say,
it makes it last forever and nobody.
But when I got there,
Ply's said,
yo, I already do
writing the wrong way.
Right.
Right in the wrong way.
So I think I was supposed to come on before Ply's.
And he said,
nah,
you need to come on with me.
So he does writing the wrong way
at the end of the song.
So he said,
yo,
this could not be no better situation.
So when he started writing the wrong way,
I came out.
You know what I'm saying?
And that's when they,
They went crazy.
Then I was winning to make it last, right?
And I knew this was the millennial tour,
and I was supposed to go into nobody.
They said, no, no, no, we can't let him do nobody
because if he do nobody, they won't be no more show.
Sure.
Yeah.
So, they made me stop.
You be careful who you brought out on your fucking little show.
Because they will kill that, they will body that bitch.
You bring the wrong guy out?
I told a story.
I'll tell her to get it, fuck it, man.
You know, somebody.
Nah, because it's legendary.
You know, one of my favorites also is Elder Barge.
I'm trying to be on my birthday maybe 10 years in a row.
One year I had them.
We had private playing for him, everything.
Swiss beat was going to drive him up.
Motherfucking ain't show up.
You know, the barge, he'd get missing.
So one day, I'm doing the show with Dave Chappelle.
You was with me that day, rest of peace, Clark Kent.
Yo, a man hit me out of the clear blue sky.
I said, yo, I'm in town.
I said, pull up the man.
Madison Square Garden.
Let's throw him.
Come up there.
And I got him.
He was, ooh,
and I like the whole garden
was singing that shit.
That shit, you'll be careful who you bring on stage
because they'll rip that shit down.
Legendary on you.
But yeah, that's what happened.
You know, Keith Swant,
I'm going to tell a story.
I don't know if it's private and we'll cut it, right?
But he gets scared when I say some shit.
But I remember it was COVID.
And somebody canceled a show.
I don't know if it was Essence Fest or some festival shit.
And I happened to be with you when you started politic and that money,
you was like, I know you got the PPP, nigger.
I know you did.
I was like, yo!
You think you know numbers?
I was dizzy with Keith.
Hold up, Joe.
Yeah, you got that PPP loan.
Homeboy was going to charge you this and this and that.
This is last minute.
I don't know if I feel like going out there.
You know this man, you caught these dudes for so much money out there.
Where was it?
It had to be New Orleans.
She jazz flustered some shit.
Yo, I heard you.
I said, yo, I'd never seen nobody negotiate like that.
Like, you were a hell of a fucking negotiate.
Yeah, I mean, because I...
Well, you know your worth.
And I know numbers.
I'm like, yo, yo, I know you got that PPP's on.
Nah, I was there.
And I said, I know you got it.
I know what you got.
You know what I'm saying?
It's public.
knowledge.
You knew what he got to.
I was standing.
You was like,
yo, I know what you got on the PPP loan.
You got to spend that.
Otherwise, it's illegal.
I know what you was given.
Who was it?
Frankie Beverly.
Somebody was supposed to do that shit.
Yeah, because, you know,
because a lot of people don't know
all that is a public knowledge.
So you can go and see what everybody got.
You know what I'm saying?
So if you don't know that,
you're not going to go and look and see what everybody got.
So I know what you got.
It's not taxed deductible.
You ain't got to pay it.
Give up no time.
You know, so spend that money.
That was the coldest shit.
That was the coldest shit I ever seen by life.
Business negotiations, yo, kiss.
He told the promoter that.
Yes.
He's showing the promoter, yo, you got one point something.
Not 10 million.
You got 10 million PPP.
You got to spend that shit or you go to jail, my brother.
This is Keith Sweat telling him.
So Frankie Beverly got sick of something.
Last minute.
It was two days.
to the show they want KeySquare.
Key Squet start telling him.
You got this to PPP, you paid this for the venue.
I know Frankie Beverly, I do the shows with him.
He ain't moving without $4.50 or $4.
He was breaking this shit.
Had his whole shit down.
What?
Scientifically.
I'm like sitting there like, yo, I ain't know people could do it.
And he got him, too.
Keith got him.
That's when I knew.
I said, I always knew you was a smart businessman.
But that's when I said, oh, no.
This guy, God forbid you.
negotiate with Keith.
You're not beating Keith Sweat.
Not in the negotiation.
When is the, for OMB Lovers,
it starts in February.
The first year of February 13th.
Oh, right before Valentine's.
I think, yeah, I believe it's February 13th.
But for those that want to know,
you can go to keepswet.com.
No, I'm saying, buy my bags, my candles.
He definitely got the luxury-line-in-bags.
Candles.
That's crazy.
And I know they're going out there, man.
They're going to be using that.
wine too, you know what I'm saying?
This shit right here.
Yeah.
Why, why be 53 when you...
You ain't got me on none of the...
Why, you ain't got me on none of them boxers, man.
Man, you definitely told me that.
I'm trying to politic.
Nah, no, you...
He told me, right?
Hold on.
Hold on.
He told me he called me.
Gallup!
He told me he called me.
I said, man, Joe, you ain't tell me you ain't called me about that.
I did call you, man.
I did call you, man.
He did call you.
He said, Joe.
Like, yo, Joe, you fucked up.
Man, you had, I sell more boxes than that.
I believe it.
I said, I'm the making last forever, man.
I said, I'm, yeah, they see me on the look, look.
They see me on.
I still got mine.
Look, mine ain't going nowhere.
You go to Turkey.
That's real, no, no, no, no, no, no.
No, I ain't no turkey.
I don't care.
You go to Turkey.
No.
Bro, I went to Turkey.
That's good.
Joe Kra.
I ain't got no head, so you can't accuse me.
I went to Turkey in that fucking airport.
Eight out of ten men had their shit wrapped up
and bloody like, they're going to Turkey for that shit.
Like, girls going to Columbia D off of BBL.
They are in, the airport is flooded with dudes with their,
there's little blood on their shit.
They're going to get their head.
They think that your shit's still El Natchel.
El Natchel, baby.
Put them on a box.
You know, that's a no-brainer.
But you know what then?
We need to do something together.
How about these guys, D.C. young,
but those guys came on the show, they were like,
yo, kiss, you got your hair, like?
then you bought the big shit back here.
He's trying to save that.
Chingo Bing.
Chingle Bing, huh?
That boy, Chingle Bing, 85, stop.
This shit pushed back here.
I'll give up.
I gave up a long time ago.
My shit pushed back like that.
I'm giving up.
Take a bit and shave your shit.
Oh, take a bit.
Take a big and shit.
That's what I use.
You know, my shit's smooth as fuck.
But I use a big.
What do you want to be used a $1,000?
a razor, this shit is just, it's better.
It's work.
See, passionate.
I ain't got to worry about this shit.
I'm fortunate.
Right.
Yeah, you know what I'm saying?
Fortunate.
Unfortunate, baby.
Oh, no.
I wish.
I tell them all the time.
No, I take these, make it last forever pills, so it makes my hair grow.
Really?
You what?
No is throwing it back.

Welcome to the A building.
I'm Hans Charles.
I'm in Alec Lamouba.
It's 1969.
Malcolm Max and Martin Luther King Jr.
had both been assassinated,
and Black America was out of breaking point.
Writing and protests broke out on an unprecedented scale.
In Atlanta, Georgia, at Martin's Almemata,
Morehouse College, the students had their own protest.
It featured two prominent figures in black history,
Martin Luther King Sr., and a young student, Samuel L. Jackson.
To be in what we really thought was a revolution,
I mean, people would die.
In 1968, the murder of Dr. King,
traumatized everyone.
The FBI had a role in the murder of a Black Panther leader in Chicago.
This story is about protest.
It echoes in today's world far more than it should, and it will blow your mind.

What do you do in the headlines, don't explain what's happening inside of you?
I'm Ben Higgins, and if you can hear me,
is where culture meets the soul, a place for real conversation.
Each episode, I sit down with people from all walks of life, celebrities, thinkers, and
everyday folks, and we go deeper than the polished story.
We talk about what drives us, what shapes us, and what gives us hope.
We get honest about the big stuff, identity when you don't recognize yourself anymore, loss
that changes you purpose when success isn't enough, peace when your mind won't slow down, faith,
when it's complicated.
Some guests have answers.
Most are still figuring it out.
If you've ever felt like there has to be more to the story,
this show is for you.

Segregation and the day integration at night.
When segregation was the law, one mysterious black club owner had his own rules.
We didn't worry about what went on outside.
It was like stepping on another world.
Inside Charlie's place, black and white people danced together.
But not everyone was happy about it.
You saw the KKK?
Yeah, they were dressed up in their uniform.
The KKK set out to raid Charlie, take him away from here.
Charlie was an example of power.
They had to crush him.
From Atlas Obscura, Rococo Punch, and visit Myrtle Beach, comes Charlie's Place.
A story that was nearly lost to time.
Until now.
Listen to Charlie's Place on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
I got shit with Keith Sweat.
I shot a movie with him and all, like twin pillars.
Yeah, we're doing Aaron Henson, Nicole Murphy, myself.
Fat Joe Kane now did his thing in it, you know what I'm saying?
So, you know.
Darren from the Bronx, too.
You can't dispute that.
He grew up with Raul or Melrose.
So, you know, we got...
If he said he ain't from the Bronx, he's full of shit.
I'm telling you, he's from the Bronx.
Yeah, Darren, then he don't say he's not from the Bronx.
He's from the Bronx.
Yeah, because he was on that dance, you know.
He's doing it.
What's the thing?
The dance...
Oh, dangit.
Hey, let me...
Yeah, screw.
Let me explain something to you, Chief, right?
You never...
You never been into drugs and nothing like that, right?
That's not.
That's not.
I'm not calling weed drugs, right?
Weed is like a cigarette.
Wait, go, limit.
No, I'm trying.
No, the point is, the reason why he's still rich
and get all that money is because he's not on drugs,
and he don't take drugs.
I'm trying to tell you that every time we see a legend like him
look great.
Liv, I went to his house.
This shit on the water, big-ass estate, this, this, that.
Same thing when I watch Eddie Murphy
in his fucking documentary is start in a $90 million house,
beat. That shit come. I knew
he ain't used drugs. That motherfucker
was like, now.
I ain't never smoke a cigarette. And every
time our legends
are well kept and they look amazing
is because they didn't fuck with
the drugs. The drugs
are hard drugs. I'm not talking about
a little lids. Because Eddie was
smoking the joint doing the dog of mill.
He said they were saying wild
smoking a joint to he turned groaning
already mad rich. I understand it. I understand it.
Some people smoke the joint
when they all to go to sleep
and don't know.
Me, I run for my neck.
You know, I smoked for the leg.
Time I ran out the house with my head.
It was a bullshit.
No leg pain.
What did you say you smoked weed
and ran out of the house?
Smoke weed one time.
That wasn't weed.
It was weak.
The girl gassed me.
That was Frankie, baby.
The sex's going to be incredible.
That wasn't weed.
That wasn't weed.
Frankie, baby.
That dick said I smoked the old dirty bastard.
Who?
Whoa.
He said I smoked.
Well, she gasped me.

What year was your first hit?
88
How to fuck it feel
to drop a hit at 88 and
2006 drop
another hit.
Now how hard it is to do that.
That's a smash hit. There's nothing
they could do with that. Who's the girl
that was singing at the end? Being maddy. She's from
Nigeria. She ain't fucking playing.
Like, that shit was incredible.
How'd you fun? How'd you?
You're incredible. How did he make that?
I don't think is
nothing he can't do.
He top off. Let her alive.
I tell you that every time somebody come up on here and start talking about that.

Always there.
Luther Vandjors, you always there.
I'm like, yo, you see, it's nothing.
I am surprised because that is a super smash year in 2026,
but at the same time, I'm never surprised when it comes to real hitmakers.
If Nelly came out tomorrow with the big.
biggest record on earth.
I would say, okay, 50 cent come out tomorrow with a new ghost shorty right now.
I'd be like, that's what they do.
That's what Keith Sweat do.
Unfortunately, we take you for granted because that's what you do.
You knock them out the park all the time.
I see the bag coming out again.
That bag coming back out on that tour.
That's all I seen, the first four bars.
A hundred million went by.
Hey, take you.
The motherfucker search it.
Y'all Keith, one question I got for you.
It's legendary is, you knew I had the time to go out to Atlanta.
Right.
What made you say, I'm going to Atlanta before everybody?
You there before anything happened out there.
Right.
At that time, must have been woods, sticks.
Yeah, it just woods and everything.
Well, you know, basically it was more a sort move that I made for my mom
because, you know, I wanted to really take care of her.
And, you know, for the houses that I would have bought in New York,
It was like it wasn't big enough I felt for her.
So I moved to Atlanta basically
because I wanted to give her the biggest house
or the biggest situation she ever had.
So I got bought a house on two acres of land.
Now, Affureta, I just happened to luck up
and get it, go to Alpharetta back in the day
because Alpharetta was nothing.
Now, Alpharetta is the biggest thing in Atlanta.
So I ended up being at Alpharetta, you know,
and I was there ahead of time.
I always admired that about you.
Yeah, so, I mean,
I was able to build everything because, you know, when I went out there,
I was one of the first person to put an SSL board in my house,
54 channel input, you know what I'm saying?
So after the second album, I put the SSL board in my house,
and that's where I did, the Silk album, my album, all my album, LSD.
Every album I did, that's why I got all my masters on my reels in my, in my garage.
You saw my thing in the garage, nothing but the freak me,
I give all my loves of you, all that.
You know, because I did it on my board, SSL board in my house.
You know what's crazy is, yo, we...
Come on.
That's Gene.
Yo, man, shout out Johnny Gill, man.
He came to see me.
I was in L.A. He hit me out.
He was like, yo, I heard you out.
Where you at?
I'm at the Waldorf Astoria.
The man pull up and the Rose Royce.
Oh, take it down.
And I...
You don't understand.
Like me, I've never been a hater in my life.
I always love inspiration.
I want my legends to look incredible, man.
When that man pulled up in that double law with that shit,
I said, thank God.
This guy's doing great.
I love it.
What color was it?
I think it was like gray or green or something.
Who gave a fuck?
We're sitting in the lobby.
No, I was the other guy came to my house.
He came to my house.
He said, man, I'm going to give me one.
Oh, he did it.
Yo, he did it.
He pulled up on me with that shit.
And they get in my house.
I'm telling you.
I'm going to get him.
me what that.
Fucking right.
Fucking right.
That's my dude.
That man,
that man pull up.
I said,
yo,
he made me so happy.
I said,
because I love it
looking at my,
my legends and my icons,
my idols looking good
and living good.
You know,
Mary Jay,
my sister,
you know what I'm saying?
So she told her we need
to do an album together.
Keith Swift,
I'll tell her,
I need her to do
make a last brother with me,
Get up on it with me.
All my female.
Classic.
Yeah.
Oh, my God.
Then you do Keith,
Keith,
and Mary to her?
Shit.
Let me ask you a question.
Did you ever do a Christmas album?
You did a Christmas album?
Yeah, I did it.
I did it,
but, you know,
I just did some videos on it recently.
Yeah, I did one eight years ago,
but I started putting songs out there.
Man, that Christmas time,
I had that soulful Christmas, man.
They had all that young Jackson five shit,
that Luke did that dick,
man, it's so much good.
Christmas music out there.
Man, this ain't that.
And that ain't this.
It's cracking kiss.
God, damn it annoys to Keith.
Thank you, boom, boo, boo.
I step on stage.
Girl scream like I'm Keith.
Appreciate you.
My brother.
He's mad, man.

These students, including a young Samuel L. Jackson,
locked up the members of the Board of Trust.

What is something you've had to unlearn about love?
That it's earned.
That I was unworthy of love.
That it needs to be forever for it to count.
February is the month of love.
Whether you're in a relationship,
casually dating, or proudly single,
it's a great time to reflect on yourself
and what you want.
