Yep, the dude was outside your studio with the blanket. I was like, you know what?
Starting point is 00:03:28 Get the fuck out of here, man. I got the jacket. You got the chain. He didn't get stabbed. Right. Shut the. Brooms! Role!
Starting point is 00:03:42 What? You get movies with! Oh! Rebel! You're talking about a rich. You got my video on that. I would have to watch it. That's how my...
Starting point is 00:03:52 Intentency, you know. Yeah, yeah, it's the boy, Jet Lennie. And it's your boy Turbulance, Tony. And this is the Rear Report show. Yo, y'all make some noise. And tell them who you are. Today we got one of the biggest comedians in the fucking world. I'm Rip Michaels, man.
Starting point is 00:04:12 Shout to Rip Michaels. Make some noise for Rip Michaels. Rip Michaels in the building. Thank you very much for having me, man. I appreciate it. Love the studio, man. Love the staff. No, we appreciate you.
Starting point is 00:04:20 Come on, man, man. That's what I'm talking about. We appreciate you to be here. I heard you's from Chicago. Southside. Oh, shit. 86 racing, yes, sir. So tell us your story.
Starting point is 00:04:28 What it was like growing up in Chicago? Are you good on 63? I'm just trying to figure out. Yeah, I'm going on 60s. I'm good on 60s. All right, cool. Southside, what part of Chicago is? What are?
Starting point is 00:04:39 86 in racing. 86 and racing. 86 and racing so yeah it's just been a journey man you know chicago's a great place could be wild but i was always very well of course i served you with i grew up in the area where they was taking starter coast and jordan's back in the day when they was getting getting dudes like a triple fat goose looking at yeah i got robbed from my startup coming from school right that's that's my generation right there okay so we're the same type of yeah yeah yeah hell that's that error that error right there i still don't think y'all got the best piece at all
Starting point is 00:05:05 of course we got the best piece because you know why we don't do we don't do cold Reheated slices. That's what I can never get used to. I can't never get used to the fact that y'all are willing to walk in the belly. Walking the pizza apart and take pizza that's been in all day long and let it warm up. But all y'all got is deep dish pizza in Chicago. We have regular slices, too, but the deep dish is what we're known for? Nah, y'all keep talking with that deep dish shit is all right.
Starting point is 00:05:26 Mad tomato sauce. How you eat healthy? That's all good. See, the whole thing is when you come to New York, you can't judge the pizza off the dollar slices in the city. Don't judge it though for that. So who got the best pizza in New York? To me, I'm going to go with Jamaica, Southside Jamaica, Jamaica, Queens. We're gonna eat it on the show too.
Starting point is 00:05:41 I should have brung her head too. Margaritas. Over Gabby's, though? Yeah, Gabby's is Jaru shit. Okay. No, I'm just saying Gabby's is good. That's North side. But Gabby's is good too.
Starting point is 00:05:50 I would just say, Petez. But when you think about Queens... Shut out to Margaritas, man. Yeah, not Gabby, shout to Gabby's too. Gabby's is like Northside. Like, I even think they got pictures of Jaru on there. But Gabby's is good too, because like the bar will go to Gabby's. Okay.
Starting point is 00:06:01 But Margaritas is Southside. But that, that been open since... Liggas was kids. Got you. We talk about 30, 40 years in business. You want pizza that's way better than Chicago. Go to Margarita. I've had Margaritas.
Starting point is 00:06:14 I have, I have Margaritas. And that's better than, that's way better than Chicago. Okay. Look, no, he's talking about. I have had margaritas. Because I'd be out there, like, when it comes to Queens, big shout out to everybody in 40, Basley. Oh, shit.
Starting point is 00:06:24 Oh, yeah. Oh, shit. Oh, yeah. Okay. Those are my cats. Oh, shit, okay. Queens in the building, baby today. Brooks, man.
Starting point is 00:06:32 Brooklyn. You don't know anybody in Brooklyn, my man? We go in Brooklyn. You don't know, everybody I know in Brooklyn is Jamaican. So I don't really know. Oh, man. Oh, man. It's all good.
Starting point is 00:06:41 Big shout out to all my soul. Big shout to all of my soul. All my Jamaica's crazy. Because I used to have rooms in Brooklyn. I used to do squads. I used to do Venus. I used to do footprints. I used to do all those rooms.
Starting point is 00:06:50 Okay. And a big shout to my one. We got a big shout out to Brooklyn. Man, one of the funniest to ever do it. That was Papi ain't no shit. That ain't no. Remember the Jamaica dude, the Jamaica store and Poppy ain't no snitch. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:02 A big shout to him. That was Brooklyn. That was Brooklyn. You working, man. Yeah. It's been an interesting journey because when I came in New York, I came in New York homeless. I had never been here in my entire life. So seriously?
Starting point is 00:07:12 I literally, I met Dave Chappelle in a club and he was like, man, if you ever want to find out if you're funny, you got to go to New York. And I was like, you know what? I'm going to go. I got off the Greyhound bus for my daughter. And I was like, all right, New York, let's see what we got to offer. And I was homeless for about a year. I used to sleep outside like Brian Park and the Finn Institute.
Starting point is 00:07:30 And big shout to the Fit Institute, there was this Haitian security guard that would let me sleep there every night by the vents because he was warm. And he would tell me just be out by. six o'clock. And that's what we would do, me and my daughter. And I just constantly started doing comedy and more comedy and it just led to me doing other things. And I think the funniest thing about it is I used to sleep sometimes outside of 15, 15 Broadway. We all know that's in TV. And I was like, one day, I'm going to be on that network. You know, I start off as the warm-up guy, making people laugh in the line and just taking that and elevating that
Starting point is 00:07:57 to the next level. And then went from being a warm-up guy to being on Wild Now and a whole much other TV shows. Yeah, how'd you get to Wile and Out? Because Wile and Out is, you know, a big syndicated show. Shout to Nick Cannon. Shout to everybody that's on Wile and Out. Extremely funny. How many years?
Starting point is 00:08:11 Was it 10 years now? 10 years? Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:16 I didn't even realize that. You never get tired of Wiling Out. Like 20, 26 season, the longest urban running comedy television show history. Yeah, 26 season. Coming up on 27 now. So we're about to do a whole new season. And we're doing it live, man. And if you want to talk about Queens.
Starting point is 00:08:32 man. I actually started. Come on with all this queens. No, but I'm just saying it. It's just funny that he said, we. Damn, man. We didn't go through that, too. It's funny because he said queens because I actually, you know, I started the while now touring Queens.
Starting point is 00:08:45 It's just funny that I actually. Oh, look at that. Because it started from Nick, you know, I was writing for Nick's stand-up, don't shoot. And I wrote for a lot of comedians and write with comedians. And we were doing that. I was right for me. He was watching Kat Williams.
Starting point is 00:08:55 And we was at, I think it was on Ontario at Anahon. And he was watching Kat. And he was like, yo, man, one day I want to do that, man. I was like, what are you talking about? It's like, I want to sell out arena. So the cat, he's just in there in front of like 6,000, I was like, that's what your dream is? And I got to give Nick's flowers because Nick put me on the show and took me
Starting point is 00:09:11 under, it's like, and took me on his wing and let me write for him and let me do all these different things. So I was like, man, if that's your dream, I got you. We're going to be selling out of arenas in six months, bro. And he was like, really? And he just looked at me like, ah. So I went ahead and I started and I booked it. And I did it at Amazzoa in Queens.
Starting point is 00:09:27 And I had 1,500 people show up. And Nick thought it was a joke. So Nick was like, man, what are you talking about? We got a show. I was like, remember, you told me you want to do this. And it's the day you said you was free. So we got Amazon. And he's like, look, man, I got a show in Chicago that's paying me way more than that.
Starting point is 00:09:39 And I was like, listen, I promise you. I can't give it to you now. But before you step on stage, I'll have $10,000 more than you was getting in Chicago. And God bless me and I hand off lives every day. And I promoted the hell out of it. And it went from just one show with $1,500 to two shows back to back. And then we did another show in Patchhog at the Soundgarden. It was just crazy.
Starting point is 00:09:58 It was just crazy. Yeah, and it started right then in front of a room of 1,500 people. And the next thing you know, six months later, we was on every single arena that was. And we was doing, like, I was number two on Polestar that year for promoting it. Like, yeah, like pushing it together. Postal, you know, once you were, you talking that Postal. Oh, my God, I still hold the record in Detroit. I still hold a record, I mean, not Detroit, I still hold a record in D.C.
Starting point is 00:10:20 For selling out two arenas in one night. We did show palace arena. We did, I think, 14,000. And then we went over to Capitol One, took a police escort and did 17,500. We had a 7 o'clock show and a 9 o'clock show. So how does a comedian turn into slash promoter? How do you transition to that? People not allowing you on stage.
Starting point is 00:10:40 People and a big shout to Arden York comedies, but they got this like hazing thing where it's like they'll put your own when you're not funny, they'll make fun of you. And when you get funny, they won't book you no more. And being told no so many times, I was like, you know what? I'm going to do my own room. I'm going to do my own grind. And I started doing like little ball.
Starting point is 00:10:58 like squires and Venus and like footprints. And before you knew it, I had had like six rooms. And then Rashid passed away. And I remember his brother-in-law coming to me and said, hey, they're about to lose the rooms that Rashid had. Because Rashe had like, like, five rooms. And I was like, well, I'm going to let that happen, man. You know what?
Starting point is 00:11:15 I'll do the rooms. I think the budget was like $800. I was like, take $600 and give it to his kids. And I'll take that. And I just do it for the $200. And I'll pick out. I'll book on one comedian. So I was getting $100.
Starting point is 00:11:25 And I was like, I'm going to keep this so his family can do it. And then that turned out crazy. Out of overnight, I literally had 12 rooms. At one point, I ran to York. You couldn't go to a borough that I didn't have a room in. I used to have two shows every single night. And when you came to York, you had to say, Rip, because Rip could put you on for two weeks straight to just doing comedy.
Starting point is 00:11:41 And then I turned that and just like promoting myself, like any other artists. And I'm like, you know, I'm going to promote myself. I'm going to do this. And everybody kept coming around me like, hey, Rip, can I be on the show? Can I do this? So then I just tried to start uplifting us all. And then just next thing, you know, I was doing, that's how the April Fool's came about. I was like, all right, cool.
Starting point is 00:11:57 You know what? Instead of doing it by myself and pushing myself, I'm going to take all my friends and we're going to go ahead and sell out the Westbury Music Fair. We're going to do something that nobody ever done. Five thousand people just to see us. And 10 years later, now I'm doing 18,000, 19,000 people. I mean, we got regular comedians doing Chris Brown and Drake numbers. We're performing in the round. It's crazy. It's been a phenomenon. We sold out the garden in three weeks on the Wednesday. Yeah, because it seems like everybody from while and out, like, took their success and did other things. Like, it wasn't like, you know, we're just going to. to piggyback off of Nick Cannon, yo, look, we're going to do our own thing. Like, everybody off that show is kind of doing their own thing. Yeah, because it's an institution. I look at Wildn out as the best institution you could ever be on for comedy. Definitely. And big shout out to Nile and Nick because they put you through like a boot camp.
Starting point is 00:12:44 Like, you come in is one thing and you leave out as another. You have to find your own voice in that show. And they'll be screaming at you. You'll see some of your favorite streamers that and Instagram famous people that just can't hack it. They'll be crying because they were not funny. Just because you're funny on your phone. It doesn't mean nothing. Does it mean shit?
Starting point is 00:13:03 And people just be walking out crying and they'd be hurting feelings. But if you make it through that other side, you make it too. And you find out who you are and what your voice and your strength is. So that's why you see the Rip Michaels. That's why you see the 85 South. That's why you see the Matt Rife's. That's why you see the Kevin Hartson and the Mike Epps. Because everybody came from the institution, the D-Rays and the choreography.
Starting point is 00:13:20 We all come from that wild out there. You ever perform somewhere? You ever perform somewhere? I didn't have a good turn on how you wanted it. Like, it was a bad night, man. And how you bounced back from that? Like, how did you play? Oh, man, we all get booed.
Starting point is 00:13:37 Any given son that happened. Any night, man, of course, man. Like, coming up in the game, of course. I think the worst boy I ever had when I was in college. Because I actually started doing comedy when I was 13 years old. My auntie jockey. Whatever really my auntie was my daddy's girlfriend. But he made me call it.
Starting point is 00:13:54 I didn't know that. I didn't know that. That wasn't my auntie. I had no idea. I really was my dad. I really didn't know. It was my daddy girl friend. I didn't know it.
Starting point is 00:14:01 I was so happy I was doing comedy. I was like, mama, look. When I did Jackie bought me. She was like, that ain't your goddamn auntie. That's your daddy girlfriend. I go outside your uncle Charles. I go to take it to you. I had Uncle Charles too.
Starting point is 00:14:13 Don't get a twist. Got you. My parents been together 42 years. They've been cheating for 41. Uncle Charles too. I had Uncle Charles too. I had Uncle Charles too. I had Uncle Charles too.
Starting point is 00:14:22 And that's the truth story. People think I'm joking, but that's the truth story. I love my parents. Don't judge my family. Y'all don't live with us. No, that's all good. All good. You know, listen, man. People go through shit.
Starting point is 00:14:29 It's all good. I got the hardest job in the world to make people laugh. It's not easy to make people laugh and be in front of a crowd, you know. And we are the real report. So you know we're going to ask you who are your top five comedians of all time for you? Of all times, that's a difference. If you're going to go all times, if you're going to go all times, you're going to go all times. But if you're going to go, who are my favorite comedians?
Starting point is 00:14:50 That wouldn't be of all times. Because if you're going to go all times, you're going to have to Eddie Murphy, you're doing the Richard Pryers. you know, and him. But if you like who my favorite comedian is that's grinding and doing it, I would say, I'm gonna get big shout out to Tony Roberts. I'm gonna get big shout out to TK. Kirkland. I'm gonna get big shout out to Dion Cole.
Starting point is 00:15:05 Like, these dudes are like revolutionary. Because you gotta realize I watched Deaf Comedy Jam as a kid and seeing all these cats performed. Same here, I love the comedy jam. You know what I was a little kid watching them at 10 years old going like, wow, one day I want to be like this, this is what I want to do. And it's weird being in a position I am because that was my only dream. and this whole shit was like to be just on Def Jam.
Starting point is 00:15:26 I thought that was it. I thought that once you got that, you was rich. Not rich. Def Jam comedy back then. Yeah, they was only paying people $777. That's crazy when you find out what it is for real, right? That is crazy. I mean, we looked at it like, come on, that was the biggest, that was like the biggest comedy show to watch back in the days on TV.
Starting point is 00:15:44 It was. It was. All the grades came. How many, how many grades came to do? Everybody is. Everybody's out. Everybody you could think of. Bernie Max, the Marr.
Starting point is 00:15:53 I remember everybody on Defcombe again, man. Oh, I miss Bernie Mac. Rest and peace. Everybody was on that, though, man. Everybody. Like, I remember Bernie Mac. Yeah, he had, go ahead, go ahead. No, no, go ahead.
Starting point is 00:16:03 No, I was going to say Bernie Mac had a style like, um, what's my, what's the father that played in kid? Robin Harris. That was the black father. Yeah, he did have his dad. Oh, my God. That's one of my furrows. To me, him and Bernie Mac had that same kind of style.
Starting point is 00:16:17 Bernie was a beast, man. And I remember me in Bernie Mac when I was like, like, I think it was 12 going inside the to Cotton Club. He used to host it, and they used to bring me in through the kitchen, because I wasn't old enough to come inside, and they would just let me perform, and they would sneak me right back outside. And just watching him, he would always just tear every apartment,
Starting point is 00:16:34 him, and back then, Diane Quarter and, like, Tony Schofield. And it was just a fraternity of just, like, people just a brotherhood. Damon Williams, just so many dope comedians that just embrace you to be like, hey, man, let's do this. But if you wasn't funny, man, they don't play around. But New York don't play around age. Of course not. You're not.
Starting point is 00:16:51 Of course not. They would throw pepper pot on you. They were throw oxtail and gravy. I think a comedian. Get a mop bucket throwing them. I think they threw mop water on Gerald Kelly one time. And I was like, woo. And he looked at us like, what are we going to do?
Starting point is 00:17:02 I was like, uh, we're going to get you a towel. These niggins is killing. Get you some cottonell, paper towel. New York is tough, man. Remember Showtime at Apollo back in the day? Yeah. I'll throw everything at your ass. Get you the fuck a party there.
Starting point is 00:17:16 Yeah, man. Yeah, it's just a time. But that don't happen anymore. There is no more boy. Now everybody just sits. and watches and they just go on your page and say, you're not shit later on, but they don't really boo like they used to.
Starting point is 00:17:27 Well, sometimes they do. Sometimes in my shows that I put on sometimes people can get it. How was it when, because I know you bought T.I. out to one of your shows and it was crickets. That, okay, first of all, let me explain. First of all, T.I. Because you think a rapper should be doing comedy? Of course.
Starting point is 00:17:44 Of course. T.I. is a funny, funny comedian and person. He has great stories and it's just, I just think that's that night. And he went around the country blaming me for getting him booed. First of all, I didn't set T.I. Everybody knew you was coming. I didn't.
Starting point is 00:18:01 I didn't. He tried to say that they thought he was doing music and they booed him. No, the crowd knew you was doing comedy. I promoted his comedy. I had his drops in comedy for the first time. That was the whole appeal. You promoted him coming out to perform. No.
Starting point is 00:18:14 So when he came out doing stand-up comedy, they were like, what the fuck is this? No, he got an old. Roaring replies. I did not, man. Y'all not going to put that on me, Bobby J. You're not going to put that on me. You're not going to put that on me. I did not.
Starting point is 00:18:25 He came up and he went up and the crowd was so happy to see TTI. And everybody knew was doing comedy. That's a rapper or not this. No, as a comedian. That was the whole reason everybody bought tickets because he had been doing comedy. It wasn't his first show. So they had been doing comedy across any change his name to tip hair. So he'd been doing comedy for a minute.
Starting point is 00:18:41 So when he said it that he was doing comedy because my friend write for him. And he went up and the crowd, you watch the video yourself. The crowd listened to him. him for about seven minutes. They was like this. They didn't booed right away. They was like this. I put you going to say seven seconds.
Starting point is 00:18:55 No, no, no, no. They listen to him. They was like, Tia. And then he was like, yeah. And then it was like, okay, okay. Mm-hmm. Boom. And they're going to take no more.
Starting point is 00:19:07 Yeah, I think he did a joke about, like, something about heated seats in the gas station bad for him and the girls sitting down. That's when they had enough. So your man who wrote the jokes for him wrote some bad jokes. I don't know. I don't think nobody wrote jokes for that.
Starting point is 00:19:17 I'm just saying that he just, and he took it. personal. Like, it happens, bro. Like, you get booed. It just, you know, how do you feel about comedians get mad at people with the crowd? I think that's wrong. Any given night it can happen. I just want to say that. Any given night it can happen. Like, the crowd looked at them and it didn't end bad because afterwards, I didn't make fun of TI. I didn't go out there and roast TI. Like, we had comedians, we posted do. No, I didn't go out there. I played his music and say, why would y'all do that to a legend? That's a legend. DJ Envi played some music for him.
Starting point is 00:19:45 We played all his hits and we rocked out for a few seconds and showed that's a king. He tries something different and that's what it was. Like, the crowd was just looking at him and like, hey, man, you can have whatever you like, but it ain't comedy. And his wife was there on the other side. She was like, who can you run to? Because she couldn't escape either.
Starting point is 00:20:06 To feel like empty space. And it just happens. Like, he took it too personal. He cut his hair off. He got the number one song. You're back rapping now. Like, it's just, and maybe that was the thing for him to do. Like, but go back.
Starting point is 00:20:17 But he's funny. And listen, if T. is watching you are more than welcome to come back anytime and do comedy. He ain't watching this. He ain't watching this. He ain't, oh. Oh, I'm sorry. We just listen to the stuff.
Starting point is 00:20:27 They ain't watching this shit. Oh, yeah, not watch, okay. But I just feel like, I feel like, no, this is why I feel like. Tia ain't got to-by. No, this is the purpose. No, we ain't too. No, I'm just. Tia, I get you some tubis so you can watch this shit.
Starting point is 00:20:42 Yeah. It's some to be. Yo, look, though, the reason why I say that, because like, when I see him, like, I see him, another clip of him like arguing with somebody. You can't, for me, if I'm a comedian don't want to be a comedian, because people say I'm a funny motherfucker. I don't want to go to the show
Starting point is 00:20:57 and argue with nobody. And to me, a good comedian, you don't got to just pick somebody in the crowd to fuck with them. Like, I'm not coming. Look, I don't want to come to your show and get roasted, my nigga. But that is real.
Starting point is 00:21:09 That's why I never was on wild. That's a possibility, right? That's a new way. That's a new way of doing, you know, crowd work. So sometimes that is cool to do crowd work. And that's like, because sometimes people sit there and you want them to have a good time.
Starting point is 00:21:19 So you see somebody just like, unfold your arms, man, enjoy yourself. Man, why are you looking like the last key picture I'm baking? No, I'm just saying. No, I'm not saying that. I'm not saying. I'm trying to make it home. That's like,
Starting point is 00:21:31 see, y'all has smiled with me on the camera. They'd be like, Rip, go downstairs and get too cold. You're good. You need to ride to Harlem. We got you, man. Go get in that car. And he'd be like, Rip had an unexpected heart attack on the way
Starting point is 00:21:43 to the Bartley Center. They'd be like, another one, another heart attack. No, Rip. It's cool when like somebody's doing something stupid, like you talking like Airy Spears. I seen somebody walking by and like, you know, this motherfucker like going to the bathroom doing your show. Now you deserve to get got. But if I'm in the front, I don't want to take that bullet, man.
Starting point is 00:22:04 I don't want to because y'all motherfuckers be roasting, motherfucker. But it's all in fun. I think some comedians do it wrong and I think some comedians that, you know, do do it. But it can be a lot of fun. It can be crowdwork can be a lot, a lot of fun. Like that's, you know, I was the woman who got for so many years. and like crowdwork now, thanks to a lot of people that's revolution. It's because you make jokes
Starting point is 00:22:21 for people in that space. But just roasting somebody, no, I think that's wrong. But like enjoying the moment, asking the question, involving their lives and bringing joy to it, I think that's dope. Because my name is actually Rip Mike Heels. It's not Michaels. It's actually M-I-C-H-E-A-L-S.
Starting point is 00:22:37 So I try to heal with the microphone. Because I know my crowd. Like, I bring out a lot of hood people, regular people, but people buy tickets. And I think a lot of comedians don't realize who buys your tickets or what they go through to get ticket. Like some people just they last $25. Some people just came home. Some people got going on. Some woman just being abused is so much and they come just to laugh. And escape that. And escape that. And if you could take 10 minutes of somebody's day and get them not to think about what's going
Starting point is 00:23:00 in their life and make them smile, because comedians all we do is really turn tragedy in the comedy. Because there's nothing funny when you talk about being beat as a kid, but you're able to laugh so you can overcome it and make it a good memory instead of something that's tragic and let go of it. So I think that when you have that ability, you should, you should harness it. And just like, why I don't always stick to my material. Sometimes I'll just look at the crowd and be like, tonight the crowd don't want this. Tonight the crowd needs this for me.
Starting point is 00:23:24 Because I want everybody to go home and fill the way. I'm not selfish. I don't want everybody just to hear my story. You know what? My daughter's going through this. I don't use it as therapy. I use it as to make everyone else feel good. And I think that's why I've been able to do these 18,000, 19,000 Cedar arenas
Starting point is 00:23:37 because that's the type of energy I put into it. Oh, bless. 19,000 seed aren't. And I've done it in every facet, man. Not only just with the Wild Out Tour, creating that, the April Foods, comedy jam and that's comedy and music, I take my friends with that, well, that's hip hop and comedy together.
Starting point is 00:23:52 So I take, it's like Fat Joe and Jada kisses on that. And that's, and Kodak Black, that's how that is, because those are friends in mine. I'm like, you know what? We're going to do the comedy, y'all do the music and we don't have fun. And if you look at Fall Back in Love, that was me taking all my R&B friends and putting R&B together with comedy. So that tour was super dope because it was fun. It was like, one minute you'll see Brandy and then you'll see D.R.
Starting point is 00:24:11 And then you'll see Monica and then you'll see D.C. Young Fly. And it just took that, that rhythm of just sitting. there when the band is playing while you're waiting for the next act and just make it a non-stop party. Wow. Yeah. And even if to offer a rip, that's when I go in the crowd and I'm super interactive with that tour. And it's just these platforms that I created just for my friends, just for everybody to have fun. That's for us go and say, look what we can do has a culture without the big machines behind them. Because I didn't know that. I didn't know that. I didn't know that every comedian has some huge machine. I didn't know that every comedian
Starting point is 00:24:40 signed to some weird live nation, A.G. deal. I didn't know comedians wasn't selling anything on aren't. I didn't know that. I thought everybody was doing it themselves. I found out the hard way. I was supposed to do like a weekend in Vegas with Kevin Hart and we was going mix the brands and do like he has a Kevin Hart weekend and we was going to mix a while now weekend and we was going to do this huge collab and he came back to me and he was like yeah AG said they can't do it. And I was like, A.G. Wait, wait a minute. I thought it was, oh, it's not you. It's, oh, it's A. Okay. I didn't know. You had a boss partner or whatever you want to say. I didn't know that. So when you ask me a question, it's me. It's not no live nation.
Starting point is 00:25:17 And there's no Aegee behind me. There's no, it's just me doing. And you're doing ball clays and big spots. I've done it every single arena in this country, at least five times. You know what you're supposed to do something together, you're saying? We were going to merge his heartbeat weekend. He had a thing called Heartbeat Weekend. And then we were going to do the two brands.
Starting point is 00:25:32 And it was going to be added to Heartbeat Weekend. Because that weekend, we did the Wild and Out Live. So I had Wilden Out live. And we was going to do a pool party and make it a whole package because, you know, Kev did Wilden Out. He was on it for a while. But then AG said, you know, we don't really want to merge like that. It's a big company.
Starting point is 00:25:48 I was like, oh, okay. But I didn't know that you had to go back. I didn't know people had that behind. I didn't know I was probably one of the only comedians to sell all the arenas by himself. I didn't know that. I had no idea. I thought that's what everybody did. I didn't know that.
Starting point is 00:26:01 Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Everybody ain't doing that. Yeah, it probably just didn't want to do that shit, man. No, it's really, it really, when you look at it, and even when you look at y'all on tour, that was Colin. That was Live Nation. That was Live Nation when y'all went.
Starting point is 00:26:14 Yeah, that was Live Nation. That was Live Nation, AI, G, they did. Some things was without a live nation tour. They're looking at him like without that company, they probably like, well, who's he with? You know what I'm saying? But he's doing it on his own. He's proven.
Starting point is 00:26:26 If they see, they could look up your receipts and see what the fuck you did. Yeah, but sometimes the corporate don't know until it's too late. That's when they come when they see him selling out ball clays and the garden and doing this and then they'll come and snatch him up. But to now- These companies try to highlight you, Rick? Oh, a thousand percent. Of course.
Starting point is 00:26:42 He wanted the money for himself. No, I just felt like when. these companies approached me, I just didn't think the deals made sense to me. It didn't make sense to me because I've already done it. So when I'm someone is, I offer me a deal and they got these deals and I tell any person, I will never do a cross-collateralization deal because that's just a loan. They're giving you a loan against your ticket sales. And if you don't sell it, then you don't get it and you pay the loan back, which makes no sense.
Starting point is 00:27:08 And then if I'm already doing 18,000 seats and you're splitting my gate with me. But then I'm splitting my gate with me, you're selling me your marketing. You're selling me your production. You're selling me all these different things that's coming out of my share of the money, not your share of the money. And then at the end of it, I'm splitting my ticket sales with you, but you're not splitting anything that you bring. You're not splitting.
Starting point is 00:27:30 You own ticket master. Why am I not getting any ticket master revenue? You get food and beverages. Where's my food and beverage? Where's my part of parking? So what are we splitting? So how are you going to come to me and offer me something? I don't need your marketing.
Starting point is 00:27:43 I've already proven this market. I'm already selling out 18,000. So it added no value. So when I sit with these companies, they look at me like, I'm crazy. Well, we could do more shows. So you want me to do more shows and get half the money.
Starting point is 00:27:52 How does that make sense? No. Give you half the money and do more shows for half the price. You know, he's shit when he starts talking about Park because that's that Live Nation tour. We learned that being on tour
Starting point is 00:28:02 like they care about the beer sales, the parking. Better believe. The fucking, just the little shit. Parkour. No, but it's the smallest. They don't care about your ticket price. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:28:12 Because on top of each ticket, ticket master takes 19. It's $19 on a $30 ticket. Right. It's a $19 fixed on a $30 ticket. The money is all that food and beverage. So if you just think about it, if it's average is $19 to $20 on top of your ticket price that you get nothing about. And then once your tickets start selling them, they have the ability to resell them.
Starting point is 00:28:29 So they have the ability to pull the tickets, sell them for a higher price and give you the original price. So you think you're selling your tickets for $150. They pull the ones that are selling when they see how quickly and they see the EDPs and they see the ratios and they pull it and then they resell it for higher. And you still get the $100, but they sold for 300 other sites. Gaste. What made you get so creative to put the music with the comedy? Just my friends. It was just all my friends.
Starting point is 00:28:53 Like, it's be no different. You say, hey, Rip, I'm coming through. I want to go up. Well, hey, Rip, I want to be a part of that. I want to do that. Like, Jaquist is like, Rip, let's go. And, like, I met Jaquist in the airport. And I was like, hey, man, I'm put you on Wild Now.
Starting point is 00:29:04 I think you dope. And he just came to one of my comedy shows. And he thought I was lying. And I was like, man, watch. And then two months later, he was on one of the episodes. and he was going to tour me. I was shook to get on Wiling Out. Cool me for that shit, man.
Starting point is 00:29:13 Big shout out to Rich Homi Kwan. I hear Rich Homi Kwan. I was like, man. That's the piece, Rich Housen Kwan. And Rich Hohanme Kwan was like, hey man, I really, I was like, man, I'm put you on this, so we're going to do all these different dates. And we got him back popping. And when he passed away, I actually did the memorial for him at the State Farm Arena.
Starting point is 00:29:31 Because his brother called me and his brother was like, hey, man, you know, he passed away last night. I think I had spoke to him the night before. And he's like, he had passed away. And I was like, wow. And he's like, everybody just, it's just a bad space. I just wanted to tell you. Because right now everybody's asked for your money, that money back, and we're going to get them the money and just give a second.
Starting point is 00:29:49 I was like, but I want no money back. Keep the deposit. And on top of it, I'm going to pay you the balance. And on top of that, I'm going to raise money for you too. Because I understand what you got to do. Real nicker shit. And then I had his family come up. And everybody was like, oh, you shouldn't do it.
Starting point is 00:30:03 I had his family come up. I had the whole thing. And we rocked that arena. We showed him so much love. and in front of 20,000 people at the State Farm Arena. His family was sitting there, his brother was sitting there, and we played his music. And it was just a huge celebration.
Starting point is 00:30:15 I've always just looked out for my friends and people that care about me. Right. On a while or now, how many places have been around? Did they go overseas before? We did Canada and we did London. That was only two days ago. But April Foods now, it's going to be in London.
Starting point is 00:30:28 So April Fool's Sparkle, and then we're OVO Arena. We ain't got his own shit going. Yeah. And a big shout of the Daniel. Daniel, you've been riding with me every day. Daniel, that's my man, man. Yeah, he's a good guy. He's a crazy, crazy dude, man.
Starting point is 00:30:41 Talk about some of the writing you did. Because Daniel was telling me he did a lot of writing behind the scenes too. I write for a lot of people. I've written for a lot of people over the years on different TV shows. I was the head writer for the Nick Cannon Show, Roland Winnie. A lot of different things. But then that's just a way of, you know, continuing down your path and politicking with everybody so y'all can, you know, come together and crazy.
Starting point is 00:30:59 Is that how you were able to bet on yourself, like, from doing that, stacking that money, like, fuck that I'm doing all this sort of my own, man. It was never about money today. this day, you don't even hear me talking about money. It's not about money. I talk about how many people it is. Got you. Got you.
Starting point is 00:31:12 It's about the people. It's not about it. Not one time am I going like, hey, it's going to make this. I'm going, we're going to do 18. But you got the Louis hat on, Louis boots, Louis jacket, Louis shirts. This is all Daniels. Get the fuck. Get the fuck.
Starting point is 00:31:26 I'm telling you. I promise you. You get the money and you're spinning the money. No. You enjoy the money. All that ain't about the money shit. Listen, you're getting the money and you enjoy the money and you're spending the money. No.
Starting point is 00:31:38 No, actually. So that's what I'm saying, Rip. No. Was that you bet on yourself with the grind? You bet on yourself, Rip? That's what it was, Rip. You bet on yourself, man. I don't want to know what.
Starting point is 00:31:48 No. Michael Blackson told me all this, so it's all fake. Oh, my God. Okay. This comes from a Blake and on Canal. Mother sucker. Okay. You're a mother sucker.
Starting point is 00:31:57 I'm getting me robbed out of here. You rob me? You got me. You got me. You don't have me out there all hemmed up. I got you. Walking through Brooklyn. I got you, Rick.
Starting point is 00:32:07 Yo, Hick, I'm Rip. He's coming out, Carnarcy. He getting off the L-Train. I got you, rip. I got you, rip. No, it's, uh... I'm Luke Wilson. Join me each week for Film Never Lies.

Film Never Lies, available on all TSN platforms in the IHeart Radio app. You know, Real Dahl. The writer who thought up Willie Wonka, Matilda, and the BFG. But did you know, he was also a spy? Was this before he wrote his stories?
Starting point is 00:32:40 It must have been. Our new podcast series, The Secret World of Roll Doll, is a wild journey through the hidden chapters of his extraordinary, controversial life. His job was literally
Starting point is 00:32:50 to seduce the wives of powerful Americans. What? And he was really good at it. You probably won't believe it either. Okay, I don't think that's true. I'm telling you. The guy was a spy.
Starting point is 00:33:00 Did you know Dahl got cozy with the Roosevelt's? Played poker with Harry Truman and had a long affair with a congresswoman. And then he took his talents to Hollywood, where he worked alongside Walt Disney and Alfred Hitchcock, before writing a hit James Bond film.
Starting point is 00:33:13 How did this secret agent wind up as the most successful children's author ever? And what darkness from his covert past seeped into the stories we read as kids. The true story is stranger than anything he ever wrote. Listen to the secret world of Roll Dahl on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Marsh Madness is here, and if you're trying to keep up with everything happening on and off the court,
Starting point is 00:33:34 We've got you covered on the podcast, flagrant and funny. You look at the top four number one seeds. What do you think UCLA is going to do? Break down that for me, my friend. I do think UCLA has a really good chance of getting back to the final four. Obviously, Yukon is the overwhelming favorite in this tournament. But I'll be honest, I think people are kind of sleeping on Texas. Experts are suggesting that UCLA is the number one challenger to Yukon
Starting point is 00:34:02 and that right after that would be Texas. SEC is so deep and so thinking just about everything. It really is annoying. So it's UCLA, Texas, South Carolina, LSU. Only ones that could possibly upset Yukon. On Flagrant and Funny, we're giving our unfiltered takes on the biggest moments of the conversations everyone's having. So whether your bracket is busted

The family court hearings that followed revealed glaring inconsistencies in her story.
Starting point is 00:35:50 This began a years-long court battle to prove the truth. You doctored this particular test twice in so much, correct? I doctored the test once. It took an army of internet detectives to crack the case. I wanted people to be able to see what their tax dollars were being used for. Sunlight's the greatest disinfected. They would uncover a disturbing pattern. Two more men who'd been through the same thing.
Starting point is 00:36:13 Greg Gillespie and Michael Marantini. My mind was blown. I'm Stephanie Young. This is Love Trap. Laura, Scottsdale Police. As the season continues, Laura Owens finally faces consequences. Ladies and gentlemen, breaking news at Amaricopa County as Laura Owens has been indicted on fraud charges. This isn't over until justice is served in Arizona.
Starting point is 00:36:37 Listen to Love Trapped podcast on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Honestly, before I had heart attack, I literally wouldn't care. Like, if you look at it, the old stuff, I didn't really care how I dress, like, or really care to push myself. And I always stay behind the scenes. Like, I've done these things for years, man. Like, like, and I never really even thought about being in the forefront. I was just always happy just to do what I do. Got you.
Starting point is 00:37:05 And then, like, I thought I was going to die when I was in the house when I had. heart attack. You had a heart attack at the Apollo, right? Yeah, I had an heart attack twice. I had an heart attack in Atlanta, and then I thought I was going to get better. And then when I had the heart attack after the show at the Apollo, I just, I've been in the hospital. I was in the hospital for like eight months in the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, and big shout to Daniel and Joe, and they came to visit me. And when I was in L.I.J, big shout to Envi, and Nick Cannon came to visit me. It just, I just thought I wasn't going to make it. And everybody thought I wasn't going to make it. And I'm honestly still not better. I'm, I'm only, I'm
Starting point is 00:37:37 a heart transplant list, so I still got to get a heart. God bless you. I'm still looking for that. But that's why every day is grateful. So when I came out, I started really caring and I was like, God gave me the ability to even be here. Like, I'm here. I'm here. It's sitting here. And I'm not supposed to be here. But I'm supposed to be here. But I'm supposed to be here. But I'm supposed to be here. So now I promise God that I won't stand in the background anymore. And I'm going to share my story so other
Starting point is 00:38:06 people can do it. And now I'm going to step out on faith and I'm a, I'm a, I'm a raise my stock and go higher than I was ever supposed to go because it's not about me. It's about me sharing my story. So the next person can do it. And it can continue. Keeping it to myself, then I'm not creating a legacy for anyone to come behind me. So I'm going to show people that you can do this. I'm going to show people that you don't need these deals. I'm going to show people that you can take it from being a small comedian sleeping on the streets of New York with your daughter to selling out arenas and being number two on Polestar and having an Apollo special that did a million and like the first week, like independently.
Starting point is 00:38:38 And that's what I'm trying to do. You had a heart attack on stage? Right on the side of stage. And it was rushed to the thing. So what goes, because when we interview Tracy Morgan, he told me and murder, I got the closest to God in this fucking room. And you're the second comedian that could say that shit too, right? Yeah. So you're on stage and you know, you, it's this, you know, you're on the road.
Starting point is 00:38:59 We all know the road life. It fucks up your body. You know, murders you drink and smooth. Eating bad. You're not really getting no sleep. bad, no sleep. Now, what goes through your mind? Like, what do you see?
Starting point is 00:39:09 Do you, when your eyes are closed, you have a heart attack? Like, what the fuck? Like, what did you see when your eyes were closed? Like, what was it like having a heart attack on stage? It's just crazy to me because I think fat man scooped. Did he die out on safe? Rest and peace.
Starting point is 00:39:23 So, like, what was going through your mind? Like, what's the mindset? Um, that I hope everybody enjoys the rest of the show. and that I hope that I don't stop it so it can't continue. Yeah. That was the first thing coming to my mind. Because I put those people in those seats. They came out because I came a flyer.
Starting point is 00:39:54 I emailed them and I text them. And I know how hard it is sometimes to get the money in for that. So that was the first thing I was thinking. And then the second thing I was thinking was like, what would I leave my kids behind? What were my wife behind? What did I leave them? a whole bunch of behind the scene stuff
Starting point is 00:40:12 that nobody knows. Yeah, that's what I was thinking about. Damn. That's all it was in my mind. That shit is deep. You know, it's great. Yeah. See, being that that happened,
Starting point is 00:40:21 so how do you, do you get nervous now a little bit when you perform on stage? No, I'm fearless now. Got you. I'm fearless. It's fun. It's fun, man. It's fun.
Starting point is 00:40:34 What is, what the park says, that doesn't kill me? It only made me stronger. That's right. That's right. Yeah. You're strong, bro. That definitely, I'm fearless now.
Starting point is 00:40:43 And I'm just, because I'm like, I'm back on stage. I have an opportunity to be funny. So now I took it for granted before. I'm like, ah, da-da-da-da. So now every show is, I treated like it's my last show. So whether I got a million shows or 50 shows or one show, maybe the Barclays and it, whatever it is, I'm going to live it and enjoy it to the fullest. I'm going to give it.
Starting point is 00:41:01 I can't say give it with all my heart because then that's not that much. Oh, man. That's only 19%. You know, comedian. That's only 19%. That's crazy, man. That's crazy. You're waiting for a heart, man.
Starting point is 00:41:14 It's just a thing. You're waiting for heart. It's just weird, man. What's the process with that? It's just a weird process. Don't you got to move a little easier, though? You can't be as energetic as you. I keep EMTs now everywhere I go.
Starting point is 00:41:26 I got a home health aid and a nurse that I got to, you know, my readings are every day. I have doctors constantly monitor me. And some days are good. Some days are bad. Got you. Some days I don't get out of bed. And some days I'm sometimes for weeks, I'm no good. So I try to make sure everything continue to move with or without me.
Starting point is 00:41:43 And that's just the different pacing. Because when you're looking for a life organ, you realize that someone has to pass away or someone has to no longer need it for you to live and survive. So it just puts you in a whole different mindset. Like, I ain't allowed to you. Now, every time I hear an ambulance, I'd be like, is that my blessing? Damn, that's crazy. Is that for me?
Starting point is 00:42:02 When somebody gets shot up, be like, don't shoot them in the chest. Shoot them legs. Please. Head shots only. I don't need the brain. I need the heart, please. Head shot only, oh my, my, wow. Only on the real world for being so positive.
Starting point is 00:42:16 Man went from being so positive. Happy to be here and say, well, just hit somebody in the head. No, I'm just saying. If you're going to do crime, make no crime pay. No, me, go. No, I'm just trying to make light it, because it's a real serious situation. Definitely. And every time I talk about it, somebody emails me or somebody
Starting point is 00:42:34 deems me and tells me thank you because they're going through it. My heart is congestive heart failure. It's congenital because I got it from my dad, but it's congestive heart failure. So it's nothing that I did from eating. It's nothing from diet. It's just something that just over time from not knowing that this was something in my side of my heart that it just caught up. So that's why I teach preventative. I teach to help people to go get checked out.
Starting point is 00:42:55 Find out what you got to do. Find out before it gets to that point. So that's, and if you notice I donated my last show, we donated to American Heart Association. And I constantly have people like at the Apollo, we taught CPR. We constantly, I don't want anyone else to go through this. Because you don't have to. If you would have got checked out earlier, it could have prevented it? I could have lived a different lifestyle, and I could have kept my own heart.
Starting point is 00:43:19 It's just a little longer. Just a little longer. Because I'm going into a thing, and it's like, oh, you're going to give you a stamp. You know, oh, it's just because you ate too much. And then did that right-heart calf, and they went in there. And literally, like, in seconds, they were like, stop everything. and all the cardiac arrest team came in and it was like 10 doctors
Starting point is 00:43:41 stood over me and then they just took me out of the thing and it was just like you gotta go to CCU and the nurses start changing from like being joky joking I'm just making jokes to and prescriptions to like asking me like who's your pastor and like quote you I went from prescriptions to scriptures and just a hard thing to take and I did it
Starting point is 00:44:01 I was by myself during that time and it just it's hard man it is it's hard man it is it's hard hard, but God got me through it. It is really hard when you face with that. You got to prepare yourself. You face it with your family, what are you going to live? Because we all know we programmed to die.
Starting point is 00:44:15 It's going on after one day. Yeah. It's part of the program. It's right there. But it's when it comes and it's right there for you, that's crazy. Why you get on stage? No, on the side. On the side of the stage.
Starting point is 00:44:25 Stop. Well, just, you know, doing what you do. On the side of the stage, yeah. The first thing you think about is by yourself, a lot of fake Louis. Um buy as much like Louis Vuitton as you can Don't let these Europeans
Starting point is 00:44:40 have your money You get this shit straight to the black man with the blanket This is People want that Louis Sit to let people know You can do this in two
Starting point is 00:44:48 Without these big companies You could do it That's why you went And got the Louis shit After you made it Yep The dude was outside your studio With the blanket
Starting point is 00:44:54 And I was like You know what Get the fuck out of here man Get the fuck out of here I got the jacket You got the chain Yeah
Starting point is 00:45:00 Now your shit is real. Don't rub it, it's gonna fill apart. It's for sure. You can't touch it. I can't move. That's like this. Now the motherfuckers with the purses now,
Starting point is 00:45:16 I've seen they got like some two strings that they hold. Like they could just go. Oh, yeah. Damn, boy. They're not playing with them. So you know my guy then. I don't.

Because, you know, Marlon Wades and Fitty, that shit was the crack up a little bit. Yeah, I think he held it down a little bit. I don't think no one stands as a chair as born against 50.
Starting point is 00:47:52 I don't care who it is. 50, a different animal with that. Like, I don't know what it is. Like, I even got my own 50s in story. He did a show called 50 Central. Oh, B, T. Yeah, yeah, I remember that. Right?
Starting point is 00:48:03 And he was doing a comedy. He would come up doing it. comedy and I did the comedy on the show and I failed and I hurt myself because the floor was like shaky and something shit and I was like I was like oh shit I'm about to get paid and I looked up and 50 looked at me and I was like no I just take a GE's just me yeah size 11 I'm old no I'm good he was like you're sure I was like mm-hmm definitely and I'm here today because Bill Belamy was he was in Shreveport He definitely was.
