Starting point is 00:00:24 Los enbases del verano Siempre van a la amarillo I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to those that are new to listening to this podcast. This podcast obviously has no affiliation with the Joe Rogan experience. All I'm doing, like how the news does, the news has no affiliation to the events that happen on the news. They just talk about it. It's like talking about things that happen in the world. I just happen to exclusively talk about episodes of Joe Rogan, and then I have guests guests on and we just go over parts of it that we like or whatever and with the guests that come on if they have fans of Rogan and really into his message and so on they talk about kind of why they like listening to Rogan and what they get out of it and what kind of inspiration there is and how it changes, you know, in some
Starting point is 00:01:25 ways, the directions of people's lives. So it's just showing some respect to Joe. But anyway, that's what this does. All right, that's not affiliated. Today, I've got a buddy of mine, a guest and a big fan of Rogan is my buddy Garrett. How you doing,? Very good, very good. What's up guys? Thanks for joining and today we're talking about MMA 46, Aerie Shafia. Now I felt this was kind of funny when I saw this one because it's an MMA podcast and Aerie is a comedian, right? Though he's a great podcast, he has his own really funny podcast. It's very entertaining. But who knows? They're good friends. Maybe he was just like, fuck it. I want to do an MMA one. And at the end of the day, they do whatever the fuck they want.
Starting point is 00:02:15 I mean, I just like them referencing funny, fucking times they had more, less shows, what not. Which was, it's almost more insightful and more. I can't sound when you hear those moments, I think. Yeah, I mean, it certainly was a good podcast. It wasn't bad at all and really funny as well. But first, of course, they got into sober October. So, Erie, Joe, Berk, Khrysha and Tom Segura are doing their second year of sober October.
Starting point is 00:02:46 And it's a really good thing to do. I've done moderately sober October, I'd like to say. I'm, uh, yes and no. You're right, I mean, I picked my spots, but more know this month, honestly. I'm just stoked to get on the side of town to be honest so it's like I've been fucking just pumped this past week even when I have time off it's like I like last night I bought a bot I just bought I feel like I'm I'm really back when I don't buy the full pint of vodka and I'm like are you really
Starting point is 00:03:20 really in it back maybe that's your silver sober up to I know I'm getting half a point of it's more like book Crisis like attempt to sober up to I mean and I didn't like I did it two nights ago And then I was like all right, and I was even we're just talking about fucking going out to eat It's like every time you go out to eat no matter what I had one drink in a meal last night in North Hollywood I like you said a little shipbox spot. It was fucking 30 boxes. Yeah. You're not eating for fucking cheap. It's not cheap.
Starting point is 00:03:49 I think that's one of the other hidden value points of doing sober October. As you save a lot of money. Well, you just save. It should just be called saving money October. And it just, you happen to be sober. Yeah. I think at the moment areas in
Starting point is 00:04:05 second place because they have the competition that they're doing as well as like connected to these hot monitor things I don't understand it I wish I know I feel like it's probably one of those like Apple watches or fucking right Fitbit which to me and even Joe kind of exposed I heard him talking about is like if you just want to fucking sit on the treadmill or sit on the elliptical watching movie like Ari's been doing like you can rack that motherfucker up yeah so it's like and not that you need I mean that is still I still consider that work don't give me don't get it don't get me wrong but it's the same time it's like I think you can
Starting point is 00:04:38 I think you can learn these programs right you can maximize points and minimize that because Joe is talking about running at like 90% Right, but it only counts the 80% rock or whatever that so you gotta be careful But still Joe's like working out like five hours in a day, right? He's 50 years. Oh, it's bad ass. That is hardcore. I mean holy fuck. I never want I mean I kind of thrive on his shit like the way he talks about it's like, he's like, I wanna stick the knife in and turn it. It's like, I don't know why I have that mentality
Starting point is 00:05:11 of the gym too, but I'm like, I wanna work harder than everybody there. So yeah. It's a good metric to go by because you can, I think it's not about working that hard as much as making sure you don't work. Like, you do nothing. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:05:27 It's like a slippery slope. If you start half-assing things, you can quickly get to the point where you're doing nothing. Which, and I think everything is mental. Like even today, I sat in a fucking cold bath for, I do two stents for five minutes and I think it's like 51 degrees. That's pretty hard, cool.
Starting point is 00:05:43 But I like the minute four, a minute five, my teeth are just about jittering. That's pretty hot. But I like the minute four minute five my teeth are just about jittering. Yeah. Some of that's breathing too. Oh, it's like wind. Wind and hot. Yeah. That's who I referenced through. You say that's who I referenced my thought process exactly because the guys like how you doing that like said next to me fucking freeze of balls. I'm like it's all mental. Right. Because at the end of the day of the majority even even working out it's like it's like people like you got your shit together it's like no I just decided to do something that you didn't do today exactly yeah really not this fucking like mind blowing thing it's just like whether or not you choose to do it just like fucking comedy just like fucking anything it's like what are you doing
Starting point is 00:06:21 yeah what are you fucking doing for sure for And, and something. And that's always one of Joe's messages. And I think with his friends, you know, why he does the sober October is because I think he just wants them to come into his world a little bit of that. Right. Right. You know, he's probably scares him away. He's good at the alcohol. I don't feel like he pushes the alcohol like, I don't want to say me or you but me and you probably you know I mean like yeah, he's not pushing the booze like he's like I have a couple drinks Smoke a joint and I'm like if I could just fucking chill Yeah drinks, but it's like not that I don't know I don't know like but I don't take it to like a dark place
Starting point is 00:06:59 Like I think a lot of people like jump on board and be like it's got a bit also who don't look he's 50 right So maybe he's chilled like maybe when he was our age he drank I sure maybe maybe it's more the phasing issue may live that here for fucking what 20 years Yeah, he's probably like a 50 drinking a bunch of alcohol price sucks the next thing I mean I know how much it sucks for me. I guess probably five and fifty years. Be bad. Oh my god. Be bad. Yeah. It's got awful. I literally have woken up and been like, man, I cannot put a price tag on how good it feels
Starting point is 00:07:31 to not be hung over. Yeah. Yeah. This is when I've been drunk. I've been like, or like super hung over. It's like, I would literally pay $200 right now to not feel this way. Yeah, yeah. Maybe more.
Starting point is 00:07:44 So many of those hangers are so bad. Probably more. That's probably one of the best things about the idea of a sober. Or a sober. Maybe I'll do something in January. I think I'm gonna accuse it. That's the time to do it.
Starting point is 00:07:54 There's nothing going on. That's the time I always did in Arizona, which was even a rough one. But I would just be like, new years, not that it was kind of, because I was always fucking party in like an animal. It's it.
Starting point is 00:08:04 And the new years hit some you rage out. And then I'm like, alright, clean it up. It takes January out. Yeah, I've done that twice. Well, I mean in so many ways, for example, the same thing with demo working out for sober October is like they need to build their bodies up for it because some of them, like Joe can just go in and hit it like an athlete. You sure he's doing more than he usually does, but those guys don't do any. Right. So then they go straight into it.
Starting point is 00:08:30 They're just going to be smashing themselves and they really need to like, they were talking, Erie and Joe were talking about how they need to kind of, Erie needs to work at his own rate, you know, like get into that kind of that level of Working out. Yeah, and stay to I mean, he's a clown, right? He was the guy that there's a there's a famous video They were talking about one time Erie goes to the UFC and they wait till the cameras on him two guys are fighting any kisses That that what the T. tj mill is the comedian I thought it was funny. It's funny. I'm hilarious. I can kiss some dudes but I don't think I mean I mean I do it for the moment right I don't know if I can tongue in. I don't know like a tongue
Starting point is 00:09:15 dude that's so it but you know they're comedians so they probably want up in each other like whoever did the tongue was like fuck you. Look at the guy to you. Ooh you like getting some tongue all like going up to him and be like hey you remember tongue by dude. Look at you. Ooh, you like getting some tongue all like going up to him and be like, hey, you remember tongue by a dude? That's true. He just like, you fucking worked with that. That was really good. I would take the one up to a new level.
Starting point is 00:09:31 Yeah. A great story that he was telling about when he was used to go to the UFC's back in the day, is he used to give clues, I guess, on his social media. And he would like tape weed to different places throughout the NGM, and people could go find it. And it's like, that's fun to do. He's funny as hell, he's such a fucking...
Starting point is 00:09:53 I wonder if he's actually was doing that. If he's got a lead bling, he's like, go do this. Yeah, well, people used to find them, yeah. People used to go get them. No, what I'm saying is he actually taking the time. I like the idea, I'm just curious. Oh, did he go do it? Is he personally doing everything? He's like, a guy to go get no, but I'm saying is he actually taking the time. I like the idea. I'm just curious Oh, did he go do it? See personally doing everything. He's like a guy No, this was before he was famous before people knew he was so he just found this funny
Starting point is 00:10:13 They were like the breath strip weed ones and he just take the places and seats and poles I didn't know they had that yeah, I guess they do like see Joe They were saying Joe used to get Companion flights right it was built into his USC contract so he could take one person Yes they do. We'll see Joe, they were saying Joe used to get companion flights, right? It was built into his USC contract. So he could take one person with the same standard that Joe got. So Joe flew for first class and he would take someone with him. So like when they all flew to Australia, Joe just took Erie with him.
Starting point is 00:10:41 And that ticket was, they know why it was was like it's like 25 grand for this fucking ticket He half said it happy and half said it fucking serious. Yeah, yeah, and Aaron was like shit fly me coach and give me 10 grand I'll take it what are the what's the feeling like when you're fucking just dusting up 25 Gs for just Somebody you don't even know yeah Well for his company. I mean he doesn't he didn't even have to think about it. Yeah. And I don't really think he said what was funny is he goes, he loved those flights because they give you first class like you can like, it's like a bad joke. They even give you some socks. He jumped off in the socks. I give him a letter. One of the other guys did that. That's so hilarious. It
Starting point is 00:11:21 was probably him. He just passed him off. That's just so good. They get into, they get into a conversation about John Jones, which is really cool because, and we were actually just talking about it before this podcast, just obviously about how good Jones is and where his career's gone and the kind of damage that he's put on people. But a really cool story was one time, I guess, Aerie was hanging out, met up with the John Jones at a UFC, and they both wanted to get stoned. So they called up Joe in his hotel room, and they're like, Aerie didn't want to bother Joe, I guess, like, was a bit worried about it. But it was like, hey, you are, because this guy wants to come get stone let's get high and he's like fuck it come up so they end up this before John Jones was really anybody but obviously
Starting point is 00:12:11 Joe knew who he was he comes up and they get stone together and Joe is talking about how John should join a real fight camp because I guess during his first fights in the UFC and I'd always heard when he started, it's only like six months, he'd only been training six months and he was like training from YouTube videos and you know in his backyard and just punching a bag and how do you go about that? You have to get people to sponsor you pay them to find it. Well I think what happens is they saw how good he was and what his potential was and then people start
Starting point is 00:12:45 Referring him and he goes down then and no you they would probably take a percentage of his fight wins Right to pay for the camp right. I think that's how what you can't just be a You can you can go you could go into Greg Jackson's in Albuquerque, and just pay 150 a month in spa, you know. I hope you get good. Yeah, I mean, that's the idea. You train with good people and you get better, you know. You're gonna get there eventually, but it's right. Yeah, it's one of those.
Starting point is 00:13:15 Yeah, you're gonna get fucked up for a while. You're gonna get fucked up. That's just like fuck, I mean, think about, I mean, think about how many dudes are doing that? Like, I'm gonna be a UFC fighter. Well, but it's like anything that's hard. How many guys wanted to be football players? How many guys, you know, it's like everyone at some point gave a shot. Right.
Starting point is 00:13:35 And the nature of the beast, we're really good at weeding people out of shit. I was talking 4-11 until my senior year high school. So I was always on my outside. Not that that's it. People have overcome it. People have overcome everything, right? Yeah. Not that that's it. But still, you're, unless it's a weight class related event, you're going to be fucked up against guys that like six foot one, two, ten in high school. Yeah, you're just like, what the fuck am I going to do with this guy? Right. You know, be a jockey. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:03 Oh, that's like, right. What do you do? Of course, yeah. I was so upset after not making the basketball team freshman year and I was like, my life's fucking over. Like, everything's hot like that. I'm going to the NBA. Life is over. And then fucking, I read some article Jordan didn't make it freshman year. I was like, I still get a chance. That's an inspiring
Starting point is 00:14:21 shit. But you know what? Those are the messages that are important. Just like Joe Rogan's podcast. We don't always want to hear that people just crushed it. We want to hear that they work fucking hard and often they fail. Yeah, they fall down and they're like, you know what? And oh, yeah, some of them are lucky. Some of them are gifted. Right, Joe is obviously lovely.
Starting point is 00:14:39 But he's also... He's crying. He's also said, yeah, I am lucky. And maybe a lot of this good fortune is the energy that he needs to pick himself back up, but also just the act of doing it. And the more shitty you feel when you pick yourself up, the stronger you're gonna be. 100%. Because that's what's hard. If it's easy to pick yourself back up, you're not getting tested.
Starting point is 00:15:00 It's supposed to suck sometimes. It's supposed to suck a lot of the time. And it's alright. That's the time. And it's all right. That's the thing. So if you accept the sucking, the fucking end game is so much nicer. Like, it's just so much more rewarding. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:13 That's the name of the game. 100%. I mean, look, you put it 2% you get 2% reward back. You put a 100% idea you're getting 100% reward. Yeah. And it's the things that you do, right? So, like, look at Aryan Joe They're both standard comedians. How many times do you think they've had to go on stage and completely suck?
Starting point is 00:15:32 Completely bomb right feel terrible go home almost and tears. They have probably done that 10 to 1 100 percent, you know, obviously now they're very famous and they don't do it Crushing it. Yeah, but they still get nights. They bomb. Yeah, it's still is gonna happen Probably not as brutally. Yeah, if they're working on new material or they're just not in the mood, right? You know, their energy is kind of low. They just have the comedy store. I mean it you know, I mean maybe bombing They're traveling. I don't think that they're bombing. No, if they they're they're going Just about the stand-up community that I've seen an Arizona. I've always been I don't want to say spot on but I mean I know what you mean and well
Starting point is 00:16:09 That's the thing when they're on tour Everyone that comes to see them is coming to see that right but when they're at the comedy store You could have a line up at 1015 people obviously most people know Aryan Joe So they give him some benefit that doubt but there are some awkward months. I've seen Joe Working on new material and when it's brand new right after a special It's it's still very good because he's so talented and he's done it so long But there's a difference between Material that he's worked on for a year and something brand new and he also you can see how he tries different angles
Starting point is 00:16:43 And some of it doesn't land and he's like all right That's how you find out right, but you know he moves on and he's a fucking pro. That's so critical the life in general Yeah, it's like you want he I heard him say something to like certain questions people ask then like what job should I be doing? Do you write and it's like but I think of that like you think about other fucking people and it's like well They figured it out so like maybe they know you are I mean, that's just fucking like think the point that they make you about is is just that You have to choose you Without about choose something. Yeah, we can sit here and say we want to be stand up comedians if we're not coming home every single day training Writing doing the shit you don't really want someone. Well, someone else is. And somebody else is fucking, that's how I feel.
Starting point is 00:17:26 It's like, I can't keep, I can't say I want to do shit if I'm not really doing shit. Yeah. There's certain expectations that I hold myself to physically. It's like I just need to get that energy point towards another direction and not separate. Just fucking integrate. Exactly, yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:43 Make the time for it. Right, make sure you're doing it. It's, you know, not be afraid to say, okay, look. When good fortune happens in your life, what are you gonna choose to do? Are you gonna choose to just make your life more relaxed? Like, okay, you win the lottery, right? The lottery was what, one billion or whatever recently?
Starting point is 00:18:01 So you win that, well then what? You just sell it a beach every day drinking margaritas. Right. Four days of that and you're an alcoholic. Right. Right. You just drink it all the way. Like it's like why not choose to then make yourself incredible at something. Right. Because you have the money and the resources and the training, you know, you can pay for it. But the point of it is it's never easy. You could never, you couldn't just buy your way into a black bow and you get, it's gonna hurt. It's gonna be hard. You're gonna want to quit.
Starting point is 00:18:32 It's all built in. It's not, anything that's easy is not worth having. No. I mean, I got a free fucking thousand dollar pair of jeans. I'm not gonna fucking treat them as well as if I bought them. Yep. just psychologically. Well this is why also they start talking about comedians that were once big but now not like Mencea and Dane Kirk and the thing about them is that they took jokes. So that's they stole it.
Starting point is 00:18:58 They stole jokes. Dane did a couple took one of Louis', Louis confronted it about him, even on Louis' show. So they talked about it, and it was like a naming, naming babies a bit, but it's very similar. Like it's so clear that it happened. And- What happens if he just owns that? Does that save his career? No, Dane did.
Starting point is 00:19:19 Dane came on the show and said straight up, yeah, I can see what you mean, but it wasn't intention on. But here's the problem, when it's, once it's on but here's the problem when it's once it's happened it's happened like it's it's so what even Joe talks about forgiveness yeah I mean I don't trust me they don't trust your size I can see that happen once like in the way I understand what man see it he was just fucking robbing yeah Dane wasn't bad man see it was horrendous right man see it was horrendous and like
Starting point is 00:19:44 and he's gone and it just speaks to it. It's like you're taking the easy road You're taking a road so easy that it hurts someone else. Yeah, like it's better to just not have a good joke Literally, like you're literally hurting someone. Yeah, it's really it's a really fucked up thing And that's why they jump on it and like all this is good. They accountability though. It's a really fucked up thing and that's why they jump on it in like all this is good the accountability though It's good that it does it. Yeah, but you know they need martyrs because nobody would say anything Nobody could in joke all them out and joke up band from the comedy store for like five years He had to be he had to be like brave as hell that it was so fucked man But now look yeah, do they have a banner on the side of the comedy store right now for his new Netflix special
Starting point is 00:20:26 I don't think they've ever done that for anyone ever. It's like finally You know, he stuck to his mom's he didn't get angry, right? He didn't get she just said I'm leaving the shit that he talks about doing which is I think that that's what makes it the easiest way to fucking support in I don't know just he looks at everything from such a fucking conscious literal spot. There's no, like, I haven't angle before I hear an issue. Yeah, there doesn't sound like a lot of indecision with you, however. Like his core values really set his decisions and he sticks to him. And this is what comes, this brings up the next big thing that they spoke about
Starting point is 00:21:01 and how we're going to finish out this podcast, but the whole Alex Jones issue, the guys are lunatic, right? No doubt. But he is pretty funny guy in the sense of just like how much of a lunatic is the guys, the propaganda. Yeah, the info wars conspiracy theory, dude, about the sand, sandy hook stuff. So basically now Twitter, YouTube, a lot of the big social media platforms, information platforms have like banned and they de-platformed and they've taken them off. And Joe and Ari were talking and they were saying, so what is this?
Starting point is 00:21:35 You know, should these things get to decide if we shut someone up, right? And what are they? Because how long will it be before someone says we don't like what Joe is saying right and they take his podcast off you know obviously something is pop you know there's no way I would know what I do for the UFC about his podcast right right it's like so true it's like such a weird fucking twilight so yeah he's he's just geniused himself into this like trifix that's how I relate to the other people could stifle him if they don't get a hold of What is allowed and what is banned and it's an interesting bit of conversation because you know I mean I'm doing this podcast now what should I be allowed to say or not? The point of me doing this is to say whatever I want.
Starting point is 00:22:26 That is interesting. That I like and hopefully other people do too. So hopefully you guys do. Thank you for listening. But, you know, that's it. When do we ban people? When do we not? And Erie bought up a great point and he's saying,
Starting point is 00:22:40 if nobody's getting hurt, then we shouldn't be banning anyone, right? I mean, the Louis, it's all perception. We've always talked about that. It's like what, just different people hold different things. But whenever it comes to the comedians and people that are on a platform, you have this idea that they have something figured out. And it's like, oh no, they're fucking humans too. Yeah. They're doing their best. And it's like, and I like the way he like allocated what Roseans said because fucking she's not anyway. Yeah, but at that time, it's like dude, she was fucking 2 a.m. on Ambien. Yeah, get out of town. And she was not anyone. I've said on a Friday fucking night, and the bottle of Cheetos, like get out of my face.
Starting point is 00:23:19 Yeah, it's just because you're on a platform. I can get it. It's like yeah, you've got to be a little careful But also like you were saying earlier where do we forget how do we there's a ways I think for that and and after that Just to finish on a high point and I know Garrett's gonna appreciate this they talked about Canada legalizing We how fucking awesome is that and I think that it was within like half an hour that happening that somebody was arrested in that car for being too high Obviously, well, there's always the dumbass, right? I'm just text me. He's like buy these stocks today yet weed stocks. They exist. Oh my god. I'm getting involved I've just bought TV Ameritrade fucking he's like your money. He's like, he literally just sent me it I have that's a real thing. All right, people, buy weed socks.
Starting point is 00:24:05 Think about it. Thanks for listening today, and we'll be back for more. And cheers, Garrett. I appreciate it, brother. Peace and love.
