The Hits with the Jono and Ben podcast.
Cheers to Dilma, making the world a better tea.
Good morning, Friday morning, Jono and Ben with you.
Yesterday at 8 o'clock we started playing handball.
24 hours was our goal to raise a whole lot of money as well for Kids Can.
And Jono, we're 22 hours in.
Megan, you haven't seen us for a number of hours now.
What's the comparison from when you left to now?
The energy levels have dipped somewhat.
I'm concerned about Ben.
He's quite pale,
but you've got very long blinks happening.
Yeah, but I mean,
we also must remember
Ben made the controversial decision
to bleach his hair,
which may also be bleaching his skin.
I did, you're right.
So if you wanted to know
what's been going on
over the last 24 hours
as we played through the night the sport of handball or foursquare,
raising money for Kids Can, well, here are a few highlights.
Good morning, it is the Hits coming to you from the Auckland Netball Centre.
We're about to play 24 hours of handball for Kids Can.
What wonderful halls we're in here, Ben.
You can only imagine the amount of volunteer referees that have been abused
in this building, my friend.
But we are about to embark on this.
It's for Kids Can, the brainchild of How To Dad, Jordan Watson.
You've got the horn to officially launch this.
I've got the horn. I've got the horn. You tell me when.
History's about to be made. Children are about to be saved.
And the first ball is bounced.
Obviously, being the game four square, we need a fourth person all the time.
And wonderful Art Green has come on down.
How are you, Art?
I'm good, thanks, mate.
Art, I don't know,
somehow the more you breathe,
the hotter you get.
How is that possible?
Hi, Minister, good morning.
Congratulations.
This is fantastic what you're doing.
Kids Can Fall kind of support
a fantastic organisation.
What you guys are about to put pain,
you're about to put yourself through
for 24 hours,
and for everyone who wants to get
behind a great cause
and John Owen being on the team,
just please step up and donate
because this organisation gets incredible results.
Every dollar that goes in
ends up generating many, many more dollars of benefit.
Yeah, we have our biggest waiting list right now since 2018.
We have around 10,000 kids in schools
and early childhood centres that really need this support so we're
asking the public to really dig deep it will help so much it's a really tough year for charities
and the fact that you guys have put your hands up to do this it's going to be epic when they've
been given a pair of shoes and they're quite cool shoes now they they're sort of like trunks
and the raincoats when it's raining it's hard to describe the magnitude of what impact it has on the children
when you're not there at this cold place.
A hungry child doesn't move.
It's Jordan Watson, howdy Dad.
But you came to us with this idea because you're very passionate about Kids Can.
You're a Kids Can ambassador.
Yeah, I've been an ambassador for around six years.
And my job really is let's try and push this out through my socials as much as I can
and get as much traction, as many eyes on the issue as we can.
So I've always had the idea, like, we've got to do something bigger.
I want to do something bigger, like a 24-hour something.
It sat in the back of my head for a few years, and then it's like handball.
Foursquare.
Every school does it.
Everyone knows what it is.
I need some old 24-hour legends who've done a decade of 24-hour craziness.
Why don't we just give you like a $100
donation or something
Yeah, it's been a wonderful ride
so far and I'll tell you what, I was just staring at that
piece of carpet down there and if you
look at it for long enough it starts moving
No sleep during
the night, we've been staying awake
We've had so many people come down and support us
from celebrities, members of the public kids as well, amazing team from The Hits and Kids Can supporting us through the night, we've been staying awake. We've had so many people come down and support us, from celebrities, members of the public, kids as well.
Amazing team from the Hits and Kids Can supporting us through the night.
And can we say right now, our goal is a huge one,
to try and raise $350,000.
That's a lot of money, particularly in the current climate.
We're currently at $238,000, which is incredible.
That's amazing.
We still need more, obviously, so if you can,
go to kidscanball.org.nz.
If you can donate, even $10 will feed one kid for one week's breakfast.
But next, we had an amazing moment overnight.
Like, incredible.
Did it actually happen, or was it a delirium?
It might have been a hallucination.
Well, the carpet's moving for me, so it might have been a...
This was incredible.
One of the biggest moments of the whole 24 hours.
We'll fill you in next.
The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast.
In the middle of 24 hours of handball,
trying to navigate a radio show, handball,
and 24 hours is challenging.
I won't lie.
Yeah, it feels like an unnecessary addition
to what we're already doing, but hey, here we are.
It's not your first rodeo, though,
but sometimes you keep coming back for punishment.
I know, but... You keep doing it again and again and again i mean it's for a wonderful cause we
should chuck a rodeo in the mix too kids can as we keep mentioning uh it's for a wonderful cause
if you can give something helping out so many kids who need your help right now go to kids
campbell.org.nz but throughout the last 24 hours we've had amazing people come down and join us
social media stars olympians all blacks actorss, actors, all sorts of musicians.
All with varying handball skills.
Yeah, well, true.
Some of the most unexpected are the handball guns of New Zealand.
I think it could be turned into a national sport.
Well, yeah.
Yeah, and we were dominated on the international stage, but about 4 o'clock in the morning, Ben, we got a huge surprise.
The biggest donation we've had so far.
Take a listen.
We just got a bit of a fright.
We're playing here at the moment.
We've got Clint Roberts is with us.
We've got Jordan, How To Dad, Jono and me.
We're here.
We just got the Kids Can Jingle playing over the top.
All your favourite cast members are here.
I'm just setting the scene.
I was like, what's going on?
Someone just made $40,000.
Someone has just donated $40,000.
Do you know who it was, Kelly?
Anonymous donate?
Yeah.
Guys, it was me.
Wow, Jordan.
So now we've gone up to...
It might have been that money from Putin that I was asking for.
Yeah, he was really hoping the Russians would come through.
Friendly Russian donors.
Yeah.
Wow, that's awesome.
$40,000.
So we've just jumped up over the $200,000 now.
Let's pack up.
Pack up the chairs.
Mate, we're still, what are we, 9.30?
We're still a long way to go.
Much as I'd love to pack up, we're still not at 3.50.
And we've also got to finish this podcast we've committed to,
the world's worst sounding podcast.
Yeah, sorry, I said it was 4 o'clock in the morning.
That was 9.30.
It's all blending into one, to be honest.
Yeah, so that was pretty incredible, $40,000.
Right now we're sitting at $261,000.
So many people coming down to join us.
An anonymous donor, too.
That's a lot of money to just chuck out there with no, like...
All right.
If I was shelling out 40 grand, I'd be like,
build a freaking statue of me, thank you very much.
I want a billboard.
Yeah, something.
Now we've got some amazing people joining us,
and one of them is Boxer Shane Cameron. How's it going? Yeah, I'm good, we've got some amazing people joining us, and one of them is boxer Shane Cameron.
How's it going?
Yeah, I'm good.
Thank you very much.
You doing well, mate?
I'll just put that mic up there.
Sorry there, buddy.
Hey, lovely.
Always lovely to see you, Shane.
Yeah, mate.
Yeah, last time you pranked me, yeah.
We did on Dancing with the Stars.
That wasn't as lovely for you to see us that time.
So what we did is when Shane,
who did a magnificent job on Dancing with the Stars,
each week the dancers, they would get massages from professionals.
And so we had teed up Shane to get a massage.
And we had our friend Laura doing it.
And you were face down on the massage table.
And we were getting her to pour chocolate on your back and hay.
Feathers and all sorts.
And you're like, what is up with this masseuse?
And you walked out of there.
And we stopped you.
And we're like, oh, Shane, it's a joke.
It's us.
And then I think it dawned on you
what was going on.
You took it very well.
And in hindsight,
probably wouldn't try
and prank a heavyweight boxer again.
But it's so good
to see you here today.
You're actually really good
on the handball court.
Oh, thank you, mate.
I think I broke,
because I've broken one hand
seven times,
so it's in that
natural handball style.
I can't even open it
so it's working perfectly
for a little cup.
Seven times
have you broken your hand. So wait, two of your fingers kind of don't... Well, that's why I can't even open it, so it's working perfectly for a little cup. Seven times have you broken your hand.
So wait, two of your fingers kind of don't...
Well, that's why I can't open it.
You can't flatten out your hand.
So that's obviously from years of boxing.
I was going to say, how did you do that?
So your knuckles, did they get obliterated?
Yeah, you see, they've just punched them away.
You have too.
The man is so hard, he's punched his knuckles off. Jesus. Oh have to. The man is so hard he's punched his knuckles off.
Jesus.
Lord.
Crying knuckles
and punched them
away.
Any other injuries
because Ben of
course is coming in
with a sore elbow.
He's got a bit of
a sore elbow.
Megan let's not
bring that up right
now.
He's got a gym
injury.
In front of a guy
that punched his
knuckles away.
Did you show him your owies?
It's not the time to show him.
He's got a plaster on his elbow.
We'll talk about that later.
We'll swap some more stories.
It's got an owl, yeah.
Hey, Shane, you're always so generous with your time
and for many charities as well.
You grew up in Gisborne.
Yeah, that's right.
So you ought to have seen firsthand
what an organisation like Kids Can do for young children.
Oh definitely, definitely I see that not just Gisborne but all around the country.
So this is great, so when I was called up to do this I'm like oh yeah, I'm not really
worried about my handball skills but they're coming in handy alright today but great course,
great course, you guys are doing a great job too by the way.
Well yeah there's a lot of kids that go without lunch, shoes, jackets,
and head to school every day.
So hopefully this money that we're earning is going to help a few schools out.
Many of them waiting to get on the Kids Can program.
They can't service them at the moment.
Yeah, so we're trying to get to $350,000 by 8 o'clock this morning.
Still a long way to go.
So if you can give something, go to kidscanball.org.nz.
Thanks so much for coming down, Shane.
We'll see you back on the court.
The man who punched his nose.
The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast.

The Hits,
the Jono and Ben podcast.
We had the physio here yesterday.
Were you going to talk
about your lovely photo?
No, I was going to go
on some ramble
about the no sleep
till Brooklyn,
but there's no point in that.
I'd rather talk about
the photo that we took of your face through the massage chair.
No, this is one of the things they had some physios out to help us out throughout the
night, and I kind of thought at first, oh, we'll get one for the gram, you know, but
actually, jeez, it was helpful.
I was kind of hoping they'd still be here this morning, so I know I didn't stay here
last night, but I've got, you know, a little bit of a tweak in my back.
Honestly, Britt from Axis.
Yeah, uni sport physio.
Yeah.
She was meant to leave at about 7 o'clock at night and stayed till 4 o'clock in the morning.
Wow.
And was like a life coach.
She's like, you're going to need a 20-minute nap now.
You need to wake up.
I'll give you some electrolytes.
Shara was the only one that had a 20-minute nap.
I can have a 20-minute nap anywhere.
Don't threaten me with a good time uh but you got a massage and the audio will have a listen
taylor probably don't need to be recording this. You want donations, mate? We're putting this out there.
Yeah, so you're doing it for the kids.
I don't need to hear that sound come out of you ever again.
If you ever want to know what it would be like, well... Nope.
That 20-minute nap was also for the kids as well.
Never wondered.
Yeah, never wondered.
Yeah, but we are raising money for Kids Can.
You can donate, as we keep saying, at kidscan.org.nz.
But also there's some amazing Trade Me auctions up for grabs
that you can find as well, including
– now, you remember the TV show?
We had a TV show.
We had the big Jono and Ben neon sign.
Have we mentioned that before to you, Megan?
Right.
We're selling the Jono sign.
Jono's given up the Jono part of the Jono sign.
Oh, you don't want to give up the Ben part?
No, that's up already up in the house, mate.
That's up in my house.
I've got the Ben part of my house.
It's in the lounge. You flick a switch in the lounge, it lights up. up in the house, mate. It's up in my house. I've got the Ben part up in my house. It's in the lounge.
You flick a switch
in the lounge,
it lights up.
Come around,
I'll show you.
You weren't allowed
it in the bedroom.
Because I forget my name.
No, I did ask for the bedroom
but it was a bit weird.
Wait, is it and Ben
or is it just Ben?
Just Ben.
Just Ben.
So you've got a neon light
that says Ben in the lounge.
Yeah.
So if I forget my name.
This isn't so narcissistic at all.
No, it's good.
Actually, it was to be fair
my wife said,
I was like, where should I put this?
And she's like, actually, it's quite cool.
Let's put it up in the lounge.
So, yeah, I was like, okay.
But if you want to get the Jono part of the sign, you can buy it on Trade Me right now.
I haven't been allowed to put mine up in my lounge.
I wanted to.
Yeah.
$855 so far is the current bid.
Wow.
Well, yeah, too.
And we must admit.
All the money goes to, obviously, to Kidscan, not to us.
Yeah, it's just been sitting in the shed here at work for a number of years,
and we're worried about some electrical faults with it, Ben,
and it potentially being a fire hazard, but we're going to get that all checked out.
Yes.
It's the same person who checked yours out and said this was some really shady wiring here.
Yeah.
Refixed it so it'll be all good, and we can sleep well at night,
conscious, with a clear conscience.
Yeah, that's right.
You didn't think to get, like, your wife one, Ben,
so it could be, like, Amanda and Ben in the lounge?
Like, okay, okay, there's birthdays and anniversaries coming up.
Ben is three letters.
That doesn't take up much wall space.
Amanda's a lot of, you know, I like to see her.
Right, okay.
Yeah.
So if you want to get that, you can actually head to the,
well, head to Hits Breakfast on Instagram and you'll be able to find out, you can actually head to the Hits Breakfast on Instagram
and you'll be able to find out how you can buy that sign.
The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast.
It is Friday morning, you're with Jono and Ben here on The Hits.
With just over one hour to go on our handball marathon,
we're playing handball to raise money for Kids Can this morning.
Yeah, it's been a fun 24 hours, but we are trying to get to $350,000,
and we are about 80 grand off at the moment, Ben, boys.
I don't know where you can find 80 grand in just over an hour.
I know.
But, hey, whatever we raise, it's better than nothing.
Well, yeah, true, yeah.
I know you were like, if we don't get to $350,000,
I've brought shame upon my family and all this stuff.
Don't worry.
You know, you've been out here.
It's more money than they had before we started this.
Well, that's true.
And we really do appreciate everyone that's donated
and given their time as well to come down and help us raise some money for Kids Can.
Yeah, and during the ad break, we just had a message for us to call Dilhan.
Now, Dilhan is the owner of Dilmara,
a proud partner that we team up with for this show right now. And we spoke Now Dilhan is the owner of Dilmara, a proud partner that we team up with
for this show right now and
we spoke to Dilhan on the phone. Have
a listen to this. It is!
How are you guys? We're doing okay
to be honest, a little bit tired
but hopefully we can get through
this last hour or so and
get to 24 hours of handball.
Oh brilliant, you've been on the
roll for the last couple of days,
so congratulations.
Yes, thank you so much.
Tell you what we need is a cup of tea and a lie down.
Yeah, a long lie down, that's for sure.
Oh, you've earned it.
You've earned it.
You're doing some amazing stuff.
Congratulations.
And now you've got the support from Dilma.
We've got support from Dilma?
Yes, yes.
I mean, you know, we're topping up the amount that you've raised
and we're going to put in $5,000.
Oh, wow.
$5,000!
Wow, that is incredible.
Everybody, Dilma's donating $5,000.
Woo!
Oh, that is incredible.
I've been advised that it works out to around $100 per hour
for each of you,
and so that means you're really well paid.
Oh, that is so generous and lovely of you.
We really, really do appreciate you supporting us,
even from all the way over there in Sri Lanka.
We love what you're doing, and and you know, my father formed our business around the philosophy
of kindness to people and nature and we're in awe.
And thank you for helping us to make the world a better tea so there's nothing we can hope
to do more than support you in what you're doing for Kiwi communities.
Oh, Dilhan, I already loved you.
I couldn't love him anymore.
I didn't think it was possible.
I didn't think it was possible, but we love you even more.
Thank you so much, guys, and I hope it goes really well.
You've got an hour left, is it?
Yeah, we do, we do.
Yeah, we're trying to get $350,000 and this has helped
a huge amount, mate, so we really
appreciate you phoning through.
We are all behind you. We are rooting for you.
Oh, thank you. Keep up the strength,
drink a cup of Dilma tea and you'll have
all the stamina you need. Oh, thank you
so much. And listen, also thank you to producer
Taylor who called Sri Lanka on her cell phone
for this call as well.
We'll be seeing how much that bill costs you.
It might be a $5,000 bill.
Love your work, Dilhan.
The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast.
Just getting a nice shoulder rub for Monty Beetham, actually.
Oh, lovely.
Strong hands, I imagine.
Yeah, it's really strong hands.
It was wonderful.
And the reason Ben is getting his shoulders rubbed by a professional league player
is we're raising money for Kids Can.
And if you want to know what Kids Can does and how they actually touch the kids of the country.
I hide at morning tea and lunch so other kids can't see that I have no food.
I'm always paranoid people will hear my tummy rumbling in class.
I couldn't ask mum for a new school bag.
We hardly had any food.
I thought having quarter of a sandwich for dinner was normal. And from a teacher,
one day we were doing some writing and one boy said, I can't think what to write. I said,
just write what's in your head. I came back to find a page of I'm hungry, I'm hungry, I'm hungry.
Yeah, so that's what they do. They help out 60,000 kids around the country right now
and there are thousands more on the wait
list. We need your help.
It's so sad that, it's heartbreaking
that in New Zealand that kids are going to school
without lunch, without jackets,
without shoes. So if you can give something
as we keep saying, it really would make
a big difference. We're giving it one final push
this morning and thanks to ASB, doubling
your donations to 8 o'clock
at kidscampbell.org.nz
And also we want to thank
sorry, oh I'm so delirious
also want to thank the wonderful Chris too
from Kindface. Now at Kindface they do
pillows, they do sheets
eye masks too, sleeping eye masks
they can help you sleep better and
cure migraines and things. He has said
for the next three people that donate $360,
the package would include feeding a child for a whole year at a school,
giving them a jacket, giving them shoes.
He will give them a $360 voucher for Kind Face.
Oh, that's awesome.
Amazing.
All right.
Hey, can I have permission from now on, every $10,000 we get to do the air horn?
Yeah.
Okay. You have to warn people because you're getting a we get to do the air horn? Yeah. Okay.
You have to warn people because you're getting a hell of a fright.
Here's your warning.
Here's your warning.
We've just hit $270,000.
Very weak warning.
A stadium load of people just drop to the floor.
They really get a heck of a fright, don't they?
All right.
Keeping them on their toes.
The hits.
The Jono and Ben podcast.
But we're almost there.
We're almost at the end of 24 hours doing it for a great cause, Kids Can.
If you want to donate right now, ASB are doubling your donations
at kidscampbell.org.nz, or you can text KIDS to 933 and donate $3.
Yes, and we're here with Warriors legend and boxing legend, Monty Beetham.
Welcome.
Good morning.
I don't know if you guys have been to bed, so I don't know if I should say good morning.
Wonderful sleep last night.
How are we looking?
We're fresh.
Talk to us about sleep.
What was it like?
It was actually, I was just saying to Jordan, how to dad, it was one of my best sleeps in
a long time, but you don't want to hear about that story.
Cool story, bro.
I don't want to hear about that right now.
No, you're always so generous with your time, Monty.
Whenever there's a good cause, you'll be there to help out.
And Kids Can, a wonderful organisation.
Amazing what they're doing in the schools for the kids.
And then when you've got How To Dad putting out the sort of stories
about how it's been received and how vulnerable the kids have been.
And you guys just giving up your time yet again for a wonderful cause.
The money that's been raised is just outstanding.
So that's what we want to see, more and more of that.
And if ASP are getting behind and people out there,
please just put your money to some good causes.
These guys have been up all night.
It's a wonderful feeling down there.
People will be supporting you.
But, you know, kids can.
Very worthy, man.
Now, you do a lot of work in the community as well,
and you'd see firsthand there's poverty out there.
Absolutely.
You know, and that's the thing.
You know, our kids are the most important things in our life
coming through the next generation that's what we
put them on this world for
to be better and to be the next generation
coming through so you've got to support them
you know it's a hard time growing up in this day and age
man that's for sure so
you know it's not like the back in the day and I don't want
to give you those sort of stories of back in the day in our
time but you know it's just
very very difficult so any help and support out there through waves like this you guys giving
your time and people donating to worthy causes and already there's been some generous people
out there man which is huge we've got a forty thousand dollar anonymous overnight anonymous
too yeah i don't think it's called anonymous beds i don't think they're trying to double their money
i made a bet overnight for forty thousand dollars000 Did they double down? They didn't come in actually
Sorry, it's called a donation isn't it?
Yeah, yeah
Alright, take 40 off the total
Now Megan, who we've started working with this year Monty
You'll know, we're getting her into league
And so we've been interviewing a different warrior every week
And we're asking them what sort of lingo can she chuck into a conversation
because we want to get her
to interview Webby
at the end of the year.
And not sound like an idiot.
Yeah, so far you've learnt
Rocco Berry told you to say
Was it the processes?
Are you working on the processes?
And that crosses over
to other lanes, other sports.
Dallin said something
we didn't quite understand
but maybe you would.
On the launch pads?
It's all about getting on the launch pads. That was from Dallin. That's didn't quite understand, but maybe you would. On the launch pads? It's all about getting on the launch pads.
Get on the launch pads.
That was from Dallin.
That's probably closer to a warrior type of terminology
that probably other people wouldn't see.
Do you have anything that she could maybe say
that maybe could insert into a conversation?
Isolate defenders.
Isolate defenders.
Inside shoulders.
Inside shoulders, all right.
Those two crossover, doesn't matter what team you play for,
what club you play for, if you hear isolate defenders,
inside shoulders, straight away they go, oh, rugby league.
Yeah.
Rugby league.
What's the question I can ask then?
Are you isolating defenders?
Yes, like your halfbacks, your playmakers,
you've got to make sure they're isolating defenders,
and that way they're asking questions.
Yeah.
So if she collates all of this lingo into one question,
is it going to make sense, like,
how are the processes on the launch pad isolating the defenders?
Or does she need to maybe ask multiple questions?
So launch pad is defense.
Isolating defenders is attack.
So if you cross over quickly from, you know,
if you transition from attack to defense,
from the launch pad to isolating defenders, that's a little bit better.
Oh, I thought the launch pads were those tackle pads they were using.
That's the position you get into before you tackle someone.
So you get up nice and high into a position where you can make a good decision
on which shoulder you put them on, and then you launch, launch into him.
I think we've confused Megan even more.
Megan, I'm always there for you.
Just phone a friend, and I will help you with your rugby league lingo. Oh, I'm always there for you. Just phone a friend.
Thank you.
And I'll help you with your rugby leg lingo.
Oh, Monty, we love having you here.
We're going to get back to our handball, back to our marathon.
The final 30 minutes.
We can do this, New Zealand.
Go to kidscambell.org.nz.
If you've got anything to give, just even a couple of dollars,
we'd greatly appreciate it.
You're on the hits.
The hits.
The Jono and Ben podcast.
Yes, today.
It's finished at 8 o'clock right now. All for Kids Can. We've done it. You're on The Hits. The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast. Yesterday, it's finished at 8 o'clock right now.
All for Kids Can.
We've done it.
How did it, Dad?
I've just been told unofficially, but we are over $400,000.
We are over $400,000.
Over $400,000 for Kids Can.
Oh, my goodness.
Kids Can.
I can't even say Kids Can.
Thank you so much to everyone that's donated.
Thank you so much for everyone that's given their time
to come down here and help us out.
This is incredible.
This is going to go such a long way, as you know,
to help out so many Kiwi kids.
Oh, it's absolutely phenomenal.
It's blown everything out of the water.
$400,000 is going to make a massive difference
to so many kids' lives.
We love that this has reached every corner in New Zealand.
Lots of people have been aware of this wacky thing we're doing
and have got behind it and have been donating.
If it's been a couple of dollars up to people doing $50, $100 and more,
every little dollar has helped.
Thank you so much.
That's so cool.
It's been an amazing thing to be part of.
Thank you so much to everyone that helped us out.
Kidscan has got over $400,000 unofficially, but it's huge.
I'm no expert, Ben Boyce, but I think we're about to receive a hucka.
The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast.
Just completed 24 hours of handball.
The game, Foursquare, handball, whatever you call it,
we raised money for Kids Can over the last 24 hours.
It was emotional scenes as we got to the end of the 24 hours.
I haven't slept for 24 hours and longer.
We didn't really plan the ending of this too well, did you?
Well, I don't know.
I didn't think we were going to get to the ending.
And an incredible figure that's sitting on the screen at the moment.
We have the wonderful Julie from Kids Can.
Before we get to her, a haka, a beautiful haka.
Have a listen. Yes, lovely waiata there.
And Julie from Kids Can, the founder of Kids Can, is here with us.
And the figure that you have at the moment, the goal was $350,000 to help children in need in schools right across the country.
Whereabouts are we sitting at the moment there, Julie?
We are sitting at over $416,000.
And there's still money to come in.
So that has just absolutely blown us away and it's amazing.
That is incredible.
It was a period through the night, probably about
two or three hours, it felt like
the money didn't move at all.
All it did, it was going in $10 or $20
or $30 and we're like, geez, we're
a long way off getting to $350,000.
But we got there through the great
help of everyone. And then, yeah,
every dollar counts. So thank you to everyone
who donated to this wonderful cause.
But yes, some special mentions have to go.
To an anonymous donor overnight, about 9.30, 10 o'clock, $40,000.
Yeah.
Anonymous donor.
And then $100,000 last night, donor Julie?
Yep.
I got a call from one of our long-time, like years and years supporters, Trillion Trust.
And he was watching, you know, you guys battling
it out, and it was quite late at night, and he said, look, I'm going to come in and put
$100,000 in.
A hundred?
Wow.
Amazing.
How late at night and how many drinks had he had?
I think he'd had a couple, but maybe I should have said 200 this morning.
Maybe he'd woken up in a big...
Did I give Julie $100,000 last night?
But no, incredible.
Where will that money go to?
How will this help New Zealand children?
Yeah, so look, the need is bigger than ever.
We have the biggest waiting list we've had since 2018.
Over 200 schools and early childhood centres waiting.
So our goal is to take a lot of those schools off the waiting list and also to continue
the work with the kids that we already support. We're providing food to 10,000 more kids this
year than at the same time last year.
So 60,000 kids at the moment you're providing.
And that's 10,000 more than last year.
10,000 more than this time last year.
And that just shows you, I guess, the real impact of the cost of living.
And it's a real thing.
Yeah.
And you say the cost of living.
And for us to end up with a figure, the generosity of New Zealanders during a cost of living
crisis, that makes it even more special.
Yeah.
And I think that's, you know think donations are harder to come by,
and so I think this was an amazing idea by Jordan,
but it was actually bringing some fun back into fundraising
and giving people that opportunity to donate a little or a lot
so that collectively it's going to make a massive impact.
Now I know a lot of external parties have helped us get to this figure
but what would you like to say to the HITS audience?
Oh, I'd like to thank
everybody
from the HITS audience
that has donated, has tuned
in, has supported you guys
who's maybe even stayed up all night
I'm sure there's a few of you
and yeah, I just
think it's just an amazing
amazing
thing to be able to do and to reach a
total like that has literally
blown us all away at Kids Can
and it will make a massive
difference and when we do some
stuff in schools where we
give out some shoes or raincoats I actually love
to invite you guys along to actually see that
so you can actually see the results of all the efforts
and share that with your listeners.
Love to be part of it.
Thank you for having us part of this.
It was a real honour to be part of it and to help to bring this.
I'm very emotional right now.
I'm very sleep deprived, but it was very emotional to be part of that
and to see that figure go up to over $400,000.
Yeah.
I won't lie, Julie.
The way I feel right now, you might have to start a charity up for me.
Raise some money for old J-Pro over here.
If you were auditioning for The Walking Dead now,
probably get the part, just saying.
Thank you.
Over $416,000 and maybe more to come.
Thank you so much for everyone's generosity.
It was amazing to be part of.
It was really,
yeah, we feel touched to be part of this
and to have you help us
through this whole journey.
The Hits,
the Jono and Ben podcast.
Who's having the best weekend?
We do this every weekend
on a Friday.
Connor from the South,
Hayley from the North,
they pitch why they think
their island is having
the best weekend.
And Megan,
we always put it on your shoulders.
Yeah,
why is it always my decision?
I feel like the bad guy.
I don't know why we decided that you were the scapegoat on this segment.
But let's go to Connor in the south this morning.
Morning, Connor.
Morning, guys.
First and foremost, well done.
That $415,000 in the end, was it?
That's still climbing.
$416,000, almost $417,000.
It's just mind-blowing.
It's very emotional here at Right Hand Now.
I reckon we stop counting it and take whatever comes in now
for ourselves being voiced.
Yeah, what do you think?
Yeah.
Yeah, no, it's incredible.
So thank you to everyone for the donations.
And yeah, Connor, mate, is it a big weekend in Christchurch
with the South Island this weekend, my friend?
Yeah, well, I hate to distract from one charity to another,
but we do have a charity event happening in Christchurch here this weekend,
the big annual Cancer Society fundraiser.
The Christchurch Relay for Life at some hallowed grounds at Lancaster Park,
of course, where our big old stadium used to be.
So it's a big day, obviously, 10am to 10pm.
Not quite 24 hours, I grant you, not quite 24 hours,
but 10am till 10pm, friends, family, work teams, a whole bunch of people walking around
and running around Lancaster Park raising funds for cancer society with SORC.
What a wonderful cause.
I thought you were going to say the charity was the Crusaders
trying to win another game in the Super Rugby.
Oh, they won.
Hey, hey.
They won one.
They won one.
They beat the Chiefs, mate, last weekend.
What more would you want?
All right, what else on the South Island, Connor?
This is one of my favourite events every year in Sumner.
It's called the Single Fin Mingle.
It celebrates longboarding, the traditional hang five, hang ten, or whatever it is.
Basically, a whole bunch of people wearing corduroy pants and Doc Martens descend upon
Sumner, drink beer lattes and watch people surf and buy vintage clothes. There's a big
party at the end with Christchurch
band, the butlers performing live, food,
a whole bunch of stuff. It started yesterday
and it finishes up on Sunday, so I'll probably
send them some there. That sounds
way too cool for me. A lot of craft beer
consumption as well there?
Yes. Hazies.
Hazies out the wazoo.
Sounds like a lot of hazies.
All right, let's go to you, Hayley.
Let's pitch to us why you think the North is having the best weekend.
Hello.
Tricky to segue from such a big charity event to then kind of super filious events in the North Island.
But we have gone for a small town theme today
where I've got two small local events.
One is part of the Flavors of Plenty Festival,
food festival celebrating Kai coming out of the Bad Plenty.
Waihi Beach Farmers Market on Saturday,
they have got the top chef, Brad King,
who's award-winning, amazing food creation.
He is kind of taking over that whole farmer's market
with Bounty for Bites,
so you can go and get some flavours of the bay of Plenty.
You know what? You know what?
That sounds bloody good, but you're right.
It's hard to segue off a charity event like this
into a farmer's market.
Really hard.
Yeah, I hear you, Hayley.
I mean, you've got the porcelain, you've got the wire tart,
and then Connor came in with a charity event,
and then I'm looking at my Whakatane night walk,
and surely it pales.
And that sounds lovely too.
Do you want to hang up right now, Hayley?
Don't make me do it, Hayley.
Do you want to give this one to the South?
All right.
The next event I have is going on a Kiwi walk in Whakatane
where the disclaimer is it's highly unlikely to find a Kiwi.
So let's go.
All right.
The mainland have got it, I think.
She's thrown in the towel on this one.
Okay.
Well done, Connor.
You've got the victory this week.
Thank you very much.
Go to Stewart Island.
You'll see a Kiwi up here in a minute.
You guys have a wonderful weekend. We always love
catching up with you. Next, we need to
talk to Jordan Watson. Howdy, Dad.
He came up with this whole idea
of coming up with the 24 Hours of
Handball and getting right now.
Has it ticked over again? It has.
$434,000.
$434,000.
He went up by another, what, 15 in that
K in that conversation.
Incredible. How is he feeling right now what, 15 in that conversation. Yeah.
Incredible.
How is he feeling right now?
We'll find out from him next on The Hits.
The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast.
We've come to the end of 24 hours of playing handball nonstop
through the night here to raise money for Kids Can.
It was an idea that our old mate, Jordan Watson,
who's how to dad, came up with.
You probably approached us
last year on this idea Jordan
I did, I was randomly at
NZME which is the beautiful building
that houses your radio station
and I saw a
shirtless Ben and Jono getting dressed
weirdly we had to share changing rooms
and I was getting a photo shoot
I saw Ben and just threw it out there
I was like hey man I've got an idea.
I want a radio station to throw their weight behind this idea,
and I think you guys would be perfect.
And basically then and there, you were like, love it, mate.
We're pretty keen.
Yeah.
Yeah, and I mean, it's 24 hours of handball.
It's a fun thing, playing handball.
It means to be fun, yeah.
24 hours, you go a bit delirious, and it's tough through the night.
But it's for an amazing, amazing cause,
and that's what we really love about being part of this.
And could you believe that when we started, we wanted $350,000.
Right now, we've got over $435,000.
And apparently more is to come.
So they're adding up things like Trade Me auctions
and bits and pieces that have been out there in closing.
It's just an insane, insane amount of money,
which is going to make so much change in so
many little Kiwi kids' lives.
Yeah, well, there's schools on the waiting list that Kids Can haven't been able to service.
So you can imagine an enormous amount of schools now are going to get inside the Kids Can program.
Yeah, it takes a lot of schools that are on the wait list, it takes them off.
And every school on that wait list has a heap of kids in that school.
So you just think about being able to change.
For me, you think about being able to change one kid's day
by giving them lunch and shoes or one kid's year.
We've done it for hundreds of kids.
It's huge.
It's huge.
We're all pretty emotional, I think, at the end of that.
No, no, I didn't cry.
A lot of people were saying I was crying.
I wasn't crying at all.
You and me were blubbering into each other's shoulders
at the end of it, weren't we?
Well, I was staying professional and doing Pick a Pantry.
Okay?
I wasn't going to let that slip, mate.
I'm glad you're coming up with the plan.
Where's Jono?
I was giving lovely heart-solid speeches to Jono Embiid.
I was taking the speeches.
I was like, he's off to pick a pantry.
Like the legend he is, mate.
No, it's been a shamblesles but it's been a fun shambles
enjoyed every minute of it well done mate on coming up with such a fantastic idea um yeah
we spoke to julie before from kids can the founder of kids can she said you put the fun back into
fundraising yeah oh mate really if you just i feel like you've just come up with that it's a great
but my big thing is i get annoyed they run oh well done you come up with this you came up with this idea, but it was never, ever going to be possible.
The whole idea was we needed the weight
of an awesome radio station behind us.
You guys aligned with Kids Can
and with the idea I had so much.
So thank you to the Hits Fano,
everyone that has text through,
everyone that's checked out the website,
everyone that shared the socials.
Without you guys,
we would not have hit this total.
It's a big family planned event.
Not family planning.
I don't know.
I'm tired.
It's been 23 hours.
I've got pregnancy control now.
He's changed gear now.
Guys, it's very important.
No, I know what you mean.
It was awesome to be part of
and you're just really, really special
to see that number up there
on the screen right now.
It's going to make a huge difference
all thanks to your help
and we really do appreciate it.
And it's probably the last time
we can play the world's most bearable song.
We haven't played it that much, have we?
No, the Kids Can Can Thank You Very Much Can Can song
for the total of, at the moment but still climbing, $435,132.
Thank you.
Thank you very much from Kids Can.
We are now a big fan.
A donation that can, can, can, can, can, can, can
Help those that Kids Can
Help them with their grand plan
Helping kids you know that you can
Yeah, that song will haunt you forever.
All right, Jordan, you go home, have a sleep, have a shower?
Yes.
