Starting point is 00:00:00 The Hits, with the Jono and Ben podcast. Cheers to Dilma, making the world a better tea. Crossing live to New York now, New York City, where we speak with our friend Nicole, who hosts a breakfast radio show over there. Nicole in New York. I love it, is that like my title? Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:00:17 Nicole in New York? Nicole in New York, it's like sex in the, well it's not like sex in the city, but it's the same, it's just as catchy. Nothing like sex in the city. Nicole in New York, yeah. Oh my God, sex it's the same. It's just as catchy. Nothing like Sex and the City. Nicole in New York, yeah. Oh, my God, Sex and the City?
Starting point is 00:00:28 Don't even get me started. Like, if you ever likened me to Sex and the City or anything, like if you said that when I was fresh out of college, I might have fallen in love with you. Like, nothing better. Did you feel like when you first moved to New York that you were a cast member of Sex and the City? Was that, like like everyone's vibe? Yes.
Starting point is 00:00:46 It's like not even a joke. I know that's so freaking cheesy. But like, yes, it was like, I'm here. I made it. Who? Like, are you Samantha? Are you Charlotte? We all did that.
Starting point is 00:00:58 It was so lame. I traipsed many years ago with my wife. We went to New York and we were walking everywhere to find Carrie's stoop, the staircase up to the house that they use from the outside. And I keep going, this one, this looks the same. No, it's not the right one. And we kept walking all over New York. I was like, jeez, have we got there?
Starting point is 00:01:16 I was like, oh, I guess they look like the same as 50 other thousand of them, but we got a photo anyway. What's so funny is that nobody knows. Like if you're not from New York City, you think that like that's normal. Carrie's stoop? No, but no Carrie Bradshaw could afford anything that you saw on that freaking show.
Starting point is 00:01:36 Oh my God, the stoop alone. To have the stoop alone, it wouldn't have happened, but it was still fun to pretend. It was a fun show. So what is a stoop alone you wouldn't have happened but it was still fun to pretend. So what is this is a stoop just a staircase? Yeah like an outside little classic American sort of you know you see the steps leading up to the apartment sort of thing yeah I don't
Starting point is 00:01:56 know we don't reuse the word stoop here but that was Carrie Stoop yeah. You know it's funny because obviously everybody has different money here most people rent, but there are the Richies who obviously have some like sick condos, have amazing townhouses. And the ones that have the townhouses have that stoop.
Starting point is 00:02:14 So my daughter, she went to gymnastics and got close with one of the girls. They went to play at her house one day, went to pick her up. And I was like, Oh my God, what is it? So she comes. And I was like, oh, my God. They're stupid. So she comes out.
Starting point is 00:02:27 I was like, how was it? She goes, they have way more hide and seek places than we do. It's literally a house plopped in New York City. It's $6 million. And I was like, honey, we will never have that kind of money. So I hope you had fun playing hide and seek there. Yeah. Stay friends with them, though, honey. So kind of money. So I hope you had fun playing hide and seek there. Yeah, stay friends with them though, honey.
Starting point is 00:02:46 So you do it. Oh, 100%. Yeah, I mean. Obviously the Olympics, they've ended. The sort of calm down of the Olympics before the Paralympics starts. I mean, Snoop Dogg, what's happening? I haven't got my daily Snoop Dogg updates. No Snoop Dogg updates.
Starting point is 00:03:01 He is done. He took his bajillions of dollars and ran. But right now what everyone here is talking about and I can't blame you but it feels like I can blame you for this freaking breakdancer and I am going to air quote
Starting point is 00:03:18 breakdancer. She's Australian but I feel like it's still your fault that this chick even was in the conversation. We'll shirk some responsibility. She's copped a lot of sort of backlash of it. And I feel sorry for her. But at the same time, it did seem unusual she was there.
Starting point is 00:03:33 Well, my question was, like, it's cool. Like, you do you, boo. But, like, how I feel like with the Olympics, like, you have to qualify. And I'm hearing she didn't qualify. She knew a guy. And he got her in there. and we watched her do some weird, I wouldn't even call it breakdancing. It was kind of like an Australian interpretive dance, wasn't it?
Starting point is 00:03:54 A little. But in that moment, never have I felt more like I could be an Olympic athlete. Like I was like, I can, you know, that's the thing. I can do this. Yeah, I can do this. I mean, I understand why they're not letting us do breakdancing in LA. Yeah. It was a one and done for the breakdancing, wasn't it?
Starting point is 00:04:11 But then I was reading an article today. She is due for millions, millions and millions in endorsements. But she needs to take advantage of it now because, like, she's got that viral moment happening. It's like the hot tour girl. You need to, like, you need to make sure that you take as much advantage of the insanity to make the money and get the heck out of there.
Starting point is 00:04:32 We were talking about the Hot Tua came quick and left quick. Oh, she's still around. She's definitely all over my feed. Maybe you've just fallen out of Hot Tua. The algorithm. I feel like I'm seeing her every day on another podcast, appearance somewhere. She's got merchandise, all sorts.
Starting point is 00:04:45 I didn't know that, but now I blame you for her insanity. Hey, we can't blame us for the Australian stuff. It's like us blaming you for Canada's stuff. You know, we're not blaming you. Yeah, like I like to have someone to point the finger at. The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast. So I asked one thing about New York because I went there recently and what I saw on the news over there was the wheelie bin.
Starting point is 00:05:08 Now, the wheelie bin is new for New York. Now, we've had wheelie bins in New Zealand for ages putting our trash inside. And I saw on TV they were like, it was like, I think it was the mayor showing everyone how a wheelie bin works in New York. In a matter of 30 seconds, you just said wheelie bin 14 times and I couldn't tell you what that means if my wife just had mine. Have seconds you just said wheelie bin 14 times and i couldn't tell you what that means if my wife so have you not got a wheelie i don't know what a wheelie bin so i'd like to teach you new zealand lingo so i love it instead of a trash can here we'd say a
Starting point is 00:05:37 bin for a rubbish bin and so this is like a portable a portable trash can you can wheel around on wheels it's got a lid on the top. You put your trash inside. You leave it out the front. The rubbish trucks, the trash trucks come around. They tip it in. They leave it back there, and you fill it up again. We don't put our trash in sacks and leave it on the side of the road type thing.
Starting point is 00:05:57 Are you guys big on recycling? No, what you guys are doing over there to ruin the planet, we're trying to undo it. You know what? As long as there's somebody that's trying to counteract all the damage that the Americans are doing over there to ruin the planet, we're trying to undo it. You know what? As long as there's somebody that's trying to counteract all the damage that the Americans are doing, I feel like we're okay. That's right, we're balancing it out.
Starting point is 00:06:12 Hey, listen, I just wanted to talk about Kanye West. We haven't spoken to you about Kanye West before. His partner, Bianca, who, coincidentally, is Australian. Oh, she is? Why do I not know that? Do you not know she's Australian? I didn't know that, but now I blame you for her insanity We can't blame us for the Australian stuff
Starting point is 00:06:28 It's like us blaming you for Canada's stuff, you know, we're not blaming you I like to have someone to point the finger at He takes her out, you know, dresses her up in sort of glad wrap and cellophane If that, if that A little bit of gaffer tape
Starting point is 00:06:44 Have you met Kanye? And what is he like as a person? He is not a normal person. He's not a, I don't want to say he's a mean person, but he's not nice. Like he's not friendly. He is exactly what you would think. So even before he was, and I'm air quoting,
Starting point is 00:07:00 canceled, he was always, he always marched to the beat of his own drum. He always would come when he felt like coming. He said the most insane things like you would ask him a question it would be like so what did you have for breakfast this morning and he'd be like listen so like the clouds and you know the baloney like he does not he does not he's not on our wavelength yeah so and i respect that and i think that's one of the reasons he, you know, before he started saying such hateful things, I was obsessed with him. He was one of the,
Starting point is 00:07:30 he is. Genius. One of those talents. Yes, he's a genius. But yeah, he lost the ability for us to be like, oh,
Starting point is 00:07:37 we can let the rest of it go. After he started saying things that was like, hey, I like these horrible dictators. Is he kind of off the radar now in America? Yeah. Really? Not just off the radar. Like, very much off the radar. And the last time he was at
Starting point is 00:07:55 SiriusXM, do you guys know Sway? He used to be on MTV. Yes, yes, yes. So he went on with Sway a while ago and he got in a massive fight with him, screaming, you don't know Sway. You don't know. And he was going nuts. And Sway is like a big teddy bear.
Starting point is 00:08:10 You could mush him. And it went viral because he was going after him for no reason. Yeah. He's not well. And I don't ever want to make fun of somebody who obviously is not completely there. But at the same time, he's got to be held accountable for some of the insane things that he's said and done. People get cancelled all the time in America.
Starting point is 00:08:30 Like, if someone got cancelled here in New Zealand, you wouldn't see them again. Okay, but what would a cancel be? Trump, for example. That's what I'm thinking. If we had a politician who had been involved in a sexual scandal and had been caught on microphone saying things that Donald Trump had said,
Starting point is 00:08:43 you would never see that person again. Probably, yeah, not in the same job. No, but yeah, that would happen. They would have to go into hiding. But over there, you've got a big enough country that you just need a small portion of that audience to go, nah, man, he's the best. It's not really a good look for America, is it?
Starting point is 00:09:00 That we just are like, oh, yeah, yeah, he's done all this crazy stuff, but like, whatever, like he's like the most hateful human ever, but like, whatever. We do a lot of that.
