The Hits, with the Jono and Ben podcast.
Cheers to Dilma, making the world a better tea.
We've got Josh Thompson, comedian, joining us in the studio.
Nice to see you, Josh.
Hey, great to see you guys. How are you?
We're doing all right.
Good, good.
It's good to have you here.
You're feeling like you're a little frazzled.
You okay?
I was a little bit late, sorry.
I couldn't find a pair of pants to wear.
Okay.
How many pairs do you have in total?
Well, I thought I had a lot
more than I did, and then I've been renovating
a house recently, and there's been a lot of
mistakes on the pants, like
from chemicals and paints and tearing
and stuff like that, and I just realised I didn't have a pair of pants
that were acceptable for society.
Oh, I see. So you've got that there are,
but I was wondering, what are you wandering
around with in your house?
But you know me, I've got a very low tolerance for what's acceptable on the pant.
What I do love about Josh Thompson as well,
because we've known you for a number of years,
lovable character, but always just at varying levels of frazzledness.
Yeah.
I think that's just generally me.
I've come to realise that.
Do you get stressed?
Are you always stressed?
No, I think I'm just processing
a lot of stuff at the
same time. Maybe I'm just constantly putting
out vibes for everyone to set their bar very
low. Oh, I like it. I do like it.
Because every time I bump into you, I was like,
oh, there's something going on in the poor guy's
day.
He's not on top of the day.
He's found some pants.
Before we get the
New Zealand International Comedy Festival
Which is very exciting
Yes
Yeah I'm doing my first ever show
I've never done one before
And I sort of woke up last year
And I thought
Oh I'm like old now
Like what if I die
And I've never done a
I didn't want to be like
In my grave
Like dying
Falling down
Going oh
I never did the
International New Zealand Comedy Festival
And I never found some pants.
I never found some pants.
We want to do something with all the comedians at the moment.
We've got a toaster in the studio.
We're going to put the toaster down.
It's Vogel, so you've got a bit of time.
Okay.
And we'll put the toaster down, and when it pops up, the interview's over.
So we want to ask you some standard comedy questions about your act.
Oh, this is not just a breakfast thing for me?
Well, you can have some breakfast afterwards.
You want to play?
Okay, okay.
Here we go. Toaster is down
Alright
Describe your comedy act
It's me
I've got a microphone
And I'm talking
That's generally it
But it's pretty good
It's called A Horrible Man
When I'm in a situation
Sometimes I think
Man
This would be pretty funny
If I was a real douche
Like when my wife gave birth
It was for a very very long time
And I got quite tired during it,
but I wasn't allowed,
really allowed to complain as well.
No, you're not.
No, and my wife was lying down.
So I got tired and I did find a chair,
but it turns out it was a midwife's chair.
And then so I had to give it back to her
because she's important as well.
So then I had to sit on a Swiss ball
for about 20 hours.
It was a long time.
And I got like a real –
I love that you're complaining about it.
I don't know if you've sat on a Swiss ball for a long time,
but your core gets a real workout.
And I said to my wife, you know, like, you think this is bad.
Try sitting on a Swiss ball for 20 hours.
Jesus, that would have gone down horribly.
No, no, it didn't go down very well.
But she was also quite busy as well
she's
making a lot of noise
but it is
I'm with you
it's a long time
it's a long time
it's a beautiful time
it's a beautiful time
we can't
you can't complain at all
but I guess
this is what this comedy
comedy show's about
yeah yeah yeah
it's kind of me
just complaining really
what inspired you
to be a comedian
I don't really know
I think I've always been
you do a lot of acting as well as comedy yeah I do a lot of acting I always thought I was going to be a serious actor like I trained to be a comedian? I don't really know I think I've always been You do a lot of acting as well as
comedian
I always thought
I was going to
be a serious
actor like I
trained to be a
serious actor
You don't have a
serious face though
I've come to
realise that I
just don't have it
anytime I get
really angry or
cross people find
it quite funny which
makes it even more
annoying so I've
got to be very
serious and I've
got to really
pre-empt a lot of
stuff with saying
I've got something
really serious to
say and then
people start going,
here we go.
He's going to do it. He's going to be serious.
No, no, I am serious.
This crying thing is pretty weird.
I'm finding it pretty funny as well, Josh.
Oh, the toaster. The toaster
has popped back up, Josh Thompson. We always love
catching up with you. You are very, very funny.
You're very kind. It would be great to
see you as part of the company festival. Yeah, come and see
The Horrible Man.
It's a week in Auckland,
week in Wellington.
It's my first show,
but I'm really, really proud of it.
And I think you'll have
a big old belly laugh
if you come.
Also, have you got any butter?
Because that toast
isn't going to stay hot.
Yeah, there's a little bit
of smoke in the studio,
but we'll get through that.
We all love it.
Don't say anything.
Don't say anything.
