Starting point is 00:00:00 The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast. We've got the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern joining us. Welcome. Hi, how are you? It's your favourite two broadcasters. Who are your favourite broadcasters? If you're going to list them off one to five. I just can't play favourites like that. Okay, I'm going to make you top five. I reckon Hoss goes at number one.
Starting point is 00:00:22 That's why I can't name names. It's been a while since we've talked to you on the radio but i did actually talk to you a few weeks back at my daughter's one of my daughter's schools you came and uh very kindly gave you time to open up something and uh you know there's new things at the school you came and cut the ribbon or i undid the ribbon but one thing i i said to johnno do they not trust you with scissors nowadays does Yeah, does that something they do these days? They undo ribbons, not cut them? I have the full range. So there are still ribbon cuttings.
Starting point is 00:00:51 I've got health and safety gone mad. I still use scissors in schools. In fact, at a recent school opening, they hadn't quite mounted the plaque, but they had the plaque. And so I had to unwrap the plaque. But unfortunately, those plaques are sharp. So I came away with quite the bleeder from that.
Starting point is 00:01:14 Oh, geez. Okay. Well, because I was impressed with you not only being there, but also your question to the kids. You got on the mic and you're like, what do you think the prime minister does for a job? What's their main job? I was like like risky question if it wasn't for kids oh and every time every time i say hey let's just do some questions you can see the teachers and the principal just sink into the ground oh okay that's always my favorite part
Starting point is 00:01:43 kids actually you can see they're way more observant about these things than you'd expect. They come up with great answers. That was very good. Now, we're good on you for doing that. I remember you telling us a story when you were first starting your political career. You were at a public event and you might have thrown it to the floor as well. Anyone got any questions? Risky game again.
Starting point is 00:02:00 And you said, was it your grandmother that started heckling you? That's right. I was at a, what I can only describe, my first seat was a very rural seat. So I was at a public meeting and I got asked a question. I actually got asked a question from the floor and I gave a very passionate answer. It was about climate change at that time and the room booed and I was absolutely convinced that my grandmother was one of them. Leading the boo. Did my grandmother boo at least? No, Jacinda Ardern, you've been very busy.
Starting point is 00:02:31 Well, you're the Prime Minister, of course you're busy, but you went to Antarctica. The plane didn't quite get you back, but anyway, how was that experience in Antarctica? I mean, it's an incredible, incredible place, but I think one of the things that I would just love New Zealanders to know about that place is just the incredible work New Zealand does.
Starting point is 00:02:49 There's about roughly 80 people there during the high point of the season. Predominantly, they're scientists and researchers looking at what is happening to the sea life, looking at what's happening to the sea ice and what that means for climate change. They do great work. Yeah, because is it the sort of place,
Starting point is 00:03:07 and feel free to answer this diplomatically, that you go there and you're like, it's beautiful, it's amazing, but are you done with it in an hour? I could have stayed longer at the store. I'm just going to put that out there. Oh, brilliant. We've got Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister, with us. A lot of rumours swirling around at the moment, Prime Minister.
Starting point is 00:03:24 Are you stepping down and are you going to announce it on the Hits Breakfast with Jono and Ben now? Oh, God loves a trier. No, as I've said, no, no, I am not going anywhere, nor I can confirm as well, nor am I buying a house in New Plymouth. This is just, nor do I have a farm in Southland. Oh, is that another rumour? Oh, yeah, no, that one's done the rounds. in New Plymouth. This is just, nor do I have a farm in Southland. Is that another rumour? Oh, yeah, no, that one's done the rounds.
Starting point is 00:03:50 Nor do I have a home on Waiheke Island. So let's just bosh all the rumours for it. And nor do you have a full back tattoo, which we asked you about previously. No full back tattoo either. But you still haven't shown us your back. What are you hiding from us, Prime Minister? No tattoos and just stock standard piercing.
Starting point is 00:04:06 Now, Prime Minister, there's been a lot of polls lately. Do they affect you and your day-to-day, or do you just ignore them and keep ploughing on? Look, you know, of course, you know, we're politicians. You know, when they come up, I mean, we ask questions about them, so of course you register them. But behind the scenes, we have our own. So I have a bit of an idea of what's happening. Now, that's not so that I make decisions based about them. So of course you register them, but behind the scenes, we have our own. So I have a bit of an idea of what's happening.
Starting point is 00:04:26 Now that's not so that I make decisions based on them. How the public are feeling about things that we're up to. So I treat them in that way. But I also know, and I've said this, look, ours is a bit different to what's out there at the moment. So that also grounds me as well.
Starting point is 00:04:41 So at the moment on ours, we're neck and neck with the national party. Yeah, right. You must, you must be wanting to put yours out there. How did you get our one? We've got a good poll too. You know that
Starting point is 00:04:52 people don't want you to be. They just want you to go and do your job. Well, we thought we would do our own poll as well. We didn't think there were enough polls out there. This is the John Owen Bean, Colmar Brunton News Hub Read Research One News Hits poll that we're going to do now, Prime Minister. And we'll just ask you a few quick questions. Who will you be voting for in the're going to do now, Prime Minister. And we'll just ask you a few quick questions. Who will you be voting for in the next general election?
Starting point is 00:05:08 Yeah, good question. I'll definitely be voting for the Labour Party. Oh, there's still time to think about that one. There's still a little bit more time. Anyway, OK. Favourite politician not from your own party? Actually, I don't want to give a long answer. I don't know the opposition as well as I used to because my role has changed. OK, we'll put you down for David Siebel.
Starting point is 00:05:27 I feel like I can probably be clear that wouldn't be in my top ten. All right, let's quickly roll through a couple of quick questions. Last series that you watched? Other than, obviously, Clark shows. Let's put you down for Clark show. Yeah, just put me down for that. Fish of the day. Last text you sent, and I don't care if it was sensitive,
Starting point is 00:05:46 it needs to be brought up. What was the last text? The last text that I sent I think was probably to Clark. Yeah. It's not exciting for you, is it? Well, it's good. It's what it was. Hey, how's our house in Waiheke doing?
Starting point is 00:06:02 Shall we go there this weekend? Have you looked into the Southland Farm? I can confirm, like every other relationship, it was about logistics. I appreciate your time as always, Prime Minister. You're going to have a great day. Look after yourself, guys. See you. Take care.
Starting point is 00:06:14 Hey, next, my dog got some publicity, but he had a little too much on display, I think. What's happening next is the hits. You got John and Ben? The hits. Legend has it.
