The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast.
And now producer Joel here, just as I was saying moments before,
has issued us a challenge to do with your help this morning.
Feels like it's way too early in the morning, I'll be honest with you for this,
but hey, let's take it on board and let's see if we can do this together.
Now this is fresh off his Can You Name 100 Simpsons Characters Challenge,
which we navigated our way through, I think we did.
We did that on radio, off the, we also did 100 Warriors League players.
Past, present.
Yeah.
That one wasn't for radio.
Yeah, but you got there in the end,
didn't you?
We did, eventually.
Yeah.
Went deep into the archives.
Deep into the Hydro Ocasini.
Yeah, all sorts.
Sean Hoppy.
Today, he's issued us a challenge.
He's like,
can you, with the help of only the text machine
or 100 of the hits, no Googling, and obviously what we know,
100 countries.
Can we come up with a list of 100 countries?
It's actually tough.
I reckon I'm good to go for 20 to 25.
Might be able to get past 30 on my own,
but when you watch the Olympics
and the number of rando countries walking around the track
at the opening ceremony.
I always wonder if New Zealand is that country for a lot of people.
Oh, probably.
They're like, what's a New Zealand?
Yeah.
Where's that?
What's that?
And we get offended.
They don't know where we are.
And we're like, well, we don't know where, you know, Turks and Kaios is or anything.
So 4487
we'll compile
our list
now how do
you want to
approach this
are we going
alphabetically
have we got
some sort of
system or
are we just
spraying fecal
matter at the
wall and
seawater
I don't know
if we're doing
that last one
but I don't
know I don't
know I feel
like we'll just
take whatever
on the text
you know
okay well
Joel you can
kick things off
I'll go
Marshall Islands
to kick it off.
Next one.
Okay, Marshall Islands.
So again, I would, yeah, okay.
I'm glad you got that one.
So there's 198 countries in the world.
For some reason, I feel like there's more, but there's...
It depends.
It depends who recognises the country.
I know the United Nations, I was reading this yesterday,
recognises 251 countries and territories.
Oh, right.
The US only recogn recognizes fewer than 200 but
then they do say the best average answer is there is 196 i know six sorry okay all right i've just
okay okay so it all depends what i guess your uh your parameters are for a country it's really
weird though because online there's not one definitive answer because it says 195 198 196
so i don't know
would you say
it's been the ballpark
well because the Vatican
is considered a country
right but that's just
sitting in Rome
isn't that just like
a little portion of Rome
Vatican City
okay so
geez we'll start
with some rando ones
okay I'll put New Zealand
in there as well
obviously let's go
Australia
let's go
should we go around
the Pacific
at the moment
you know like
yeah
okay Australia
Tonga
Samoa
Fiji
Tahiti Samoa. Fiji.
Tahiti.
Samoa.
Tahiti.
Okay.
Raro.
Papua New Guinea.
Oh, yeah, that's a good one. We've got a good start.
Text 4487.
Have you done New Zealand?
Yeah, I put New Zealand.
That was number two between Marshall Island and Vatican City.
We started random there.
Okay, I went over the hits.
4487, let's see how many we can name.
Can we get to 100?
Let's say by 7 o'clock this morning.
Now, Producer Joel issued us a challenge
that you're helping us out with
is to list 100 countries.
Off the top of our heads,
with only the help of text and the phone this morning,
we can't go on the internet.
Now, I thought we'd start with the big bangers.
What did we start with?
We started with Marshall Island.
Also, Vatican City was in there as well.
And through the text machine, what I love is just so,
like countries that I'm struggling to spell,
I'll be honest with you, but it's great.
Do you put that down to racism?
What do you put that down to?
I just put it down to trickiness for me.
I just don't.
Uzbekistan.
Yeah.
Turkmenistan.
Yeah.
All the stans.
I think we've got someone who suggested some of these on the phone right now.
Anna, welcome.
Morning.
How are we?
Oh, we're doing well.
Rattle them off.
All right.
So first of all, there's the big Scotland.
It's which it's where I'm from.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Have you got Scotland?
I have got Scotland now.
Yeah.
And then we've got Georgia.
We've got Azerbaijan.
We've got Uzbekistan.
Okay, we're just going to listen to Ben
spell out Azerbaijan.
Just letter by letter there, Ben.
I'll come back to that one.
Okay, yeah.
Yeah.
We've got Azerbaijan, sorry, Turkmenistan.
Turkmenistan, yeah.
Uzbekistan.
Afghanistan.
Uzbekistan.
Afghanistan.
Pakistan.
All the great stans.
There's a gaggle of stans, isn't there?
And then all the other stans of which there are loads. Yeah, you're right.
You've gone to areas that I didn't think we'd get to straight away,
but that's great.
Yeah, that's beautiful, Anna.
Appreciate that.
We're going to give you some hell pizza, eh?
Thank you so much.
Oh, awesome.
Thank you so much.
Good luck.
Thank you.
Together we're doing this, the team of 5 million, before 7 o'clock.
Can we name 100 countries?
What are we up to, Ben?
We're up to 29 at the moment.
Giuliano.
Hey, how are you all doing? Oh, good. Coming in with an exotic accent. Where are we up to ben uh we're up to 29 at the moment juliano hey how are you guys oh good coming in with an exotic accent where are we here but a south american flare are we what are
we chucking in country-wise yeah well uh i got a couple from brazil oh brazil yeah i can't put
brazil down i'm south america i got brazil chile chile yeah nice argentina i guess we can check in I'm South American I go to Brazil Chile Chile yeah Nice
Argentina
I guess we can
Check in there
Venezuela
Venezuela
Hey are you from Brazil
Are you there Juliano
Huh
You're from Brazil
Yes I am
Tell me
Is the Brazilian
Waxing technique
As popular as
We're all led to believe
Say it again
The Brazilian
Waxing technique
Yes to believe? Say it again. The Brazilian waxing technique.
Yes.
It is.
So it is a thing.
I just thought it was, you know,
like something they would be branded with,
stereotyped with,
but it is popular in Brazil.
Yeah.
Well,
one more time,
can you say it again? I was lost here a little bit.
That's all right, mate. You've done your part, Juliano. You've been fantastic. You and your Brazilian one more time can you say it again I was lost here a little bit that's alright mate
you've done your part
Juliano
you've been fantastic
you and your Brazilian
go and have a wonderful
day my friend
yes
thank you
legend
around there
Colombia
I guess as well
Puerto Rico
then you dot through
Europe
there's like
bang bang bang
lots of European
texturing out right now
4487
let's go Europe.
Let's focus on areas at the moment.
Let's focus on Europe.
Now you're trying to bring some systems to it.
Oh, because then, jeez, I feel like we're dotting all over the world right now.
It's not good for, I mean, great for airports, but not great for, yeah.
We'll kick off Europe with Lichtenstein and San Marino.
Someone's text through.
Great.
San Marino, my spelling will be okay with that.
This is really testing me.
First thing in the morning. See if we can
all together list from the top of our heads
with no Google, 100 countries
in the world.
Anywhere, seems like it ranges between
196 to 200 and something
countries. Depending on where you live and
what you believe in as a country.
What you think. The United
Nations, they've got 251.
They accept all of them.
Not good.
The US, a little less so.
Around about 196.
So 0800, that's text 4487.
The only rule is we can't use Google.
Yeah.
Can't use the internet.
Even though it's at our fingertips,
I reckon we could probably, the way we're tracking,
where are we sitting, Producer Joel?
69 we're currently at.
I reckon we're going to get to 100 easy
I'm pushing
let's get up to 190
Mate
not by 7 o'clock
but we can try
what has impressed me
so far with the
hits audiences
just the knowledge
you know
I feel like some
we've ignored
some of the big banger
countries for ones
that people are like
hey I know this
which is great
good to get the minnows
out of the way
and we can deal with the big bangers
as we race towards the finish line.
Every now and again, someone will be like,
oh, have we said such and such?
And we're like, England or Japan or whatever.
And we're like, America.
We're like, no, we hadn't.
We didn't have them on the list.
Jack, we'll get you on from Otorohonga.
You want to chuck some countries into the mix?
I'm going to try and round up the whole of Scandinavia for you.
So we've got Denmark, obviously, Sweden, Norway,
Iceland, Greenland
and I think that's
it. We'll add those to the list.
That's really good. That's a great summary.
Also, I've got a few interesting
facts about Greenland while I'm on air.
Yeah, okay. Greenland is
also an island.
Sorry, the biggest island on
Earth and it's also the biggest island on Earth. And it's also the
biggest island in the country
with the most green
in its name on Earth.
Yes.
That's a fun fact.
I also think there are way too many countries
and I think New Zealand should take over
a couple.
Bring the number of countries down because there's too much
admin involved with that number of countries.
So it's an admin-friendly thing.
I think we need to bring the number of countries on earth down.
Okay, he's got a political view.
Yeah, thank you, Jeff.
You know, there has been talk about whether we're going to be
Aotearoa New Zealand or any stage.
I don't know.
The new government's probably not going down there.
But it would be handy when you're scrolling down,
you have to choose your country and you're getting postage from overseas. New Zealand's quite far. That is, yeah, when you buy it would be handy when you're scrolling down, you have to choose your country on your getting postage from overseas.
New Zealand's quite far.
That is, yeah, when you buy online.
I know what you're saying.
Yeah.
You know?
Yeah.
Because even below like, is it Nui and things like that?
Yeah.
You did right, Ben Boyce.
If you start with A, you're at the top.
Yeah, we're like, oh, cool.
There we go.
I'll do it on New Zealand.
It's why in the phone book they've got like triple A plus plumbing and things.
It would be a good benefit.
Fiona,
you want to chuck
some countries
into our mix?
We're trying to get
a hundred
of the finest countries
in the world
without using the internet.
Okay.
So I've got the book
standard England,
Scotland,
Wales,
Ireland.
Okay,
we'll chuck those down.
I think they're in there,
are they Joel?
Yep.
Iceland,
Norway,
Croatia,
Macedonia,
Mexico, Ecuador, Colombia, Norway, Croatia, Macedonia, Mexico, Ecuador,
Colombia,
Chile, Peru,
Argentina.
You would have been, guys, I know you're in the Navy,
you would have been to many. I've been to quite a few, but my husband's been to more.
He's been to every continent in the world.
That's impressive.
Yeah, he's
pretty well travelled as well. That's nearly as impressive as two radio hosts, yeah, he's pretty well-travelled as well.
That's nearly as impressive as two radio hosts fumbling their way through a six o'clock
hour trying to name 100 countries.
Really, between the two of us, we might have named four.
Yeah.
But you guys are helping us out.
This is great.
Thank you, Fiona.
I appreciate that.
Keep them coming through.
We can knock it on the head next, I reckon.
I reckon we might be able to get close to 100.
What are we now?
75.
So we've just got one quarter to go.
That was ambitious.
But, okay.
We'll try and get there.
Okay, 4487, the countries that you know,
any areas you want to focus on, Joel?
I reckon Asia.
We haven't really touched Asia yet.
Stefan, good morning.
How are you?
Not too bad yourself.
Are you doing all right?
Now, apparently you've got some countries that we might have left off the list.
Yeah, I've got some African countries for you.
Oh, great.
Okay, who have you got?
Cote d'Ivoire.
Okay, okay.
Joel's on the spelling too.
It's Ivory Coast as well, right?
Yeah, Cote d'Ivoire.
Yeah.
Yes.
Democratic Republic of Congo.
Gotcha, yeah.
That's a good one.
Congo itself, or just by itself.
Eritrea.
What was that one, sir?
Eritrea.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Egypt.
Oh, of course, Egypt.
We haven't even got Egypt.
We've done Kenya, Tanzania.
I'm trying to think.
Tanzania, Gabon, Mauritius, Chad, Central African Republic.
This is good.
South Africa, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Botswana.
Oh, geez, you're really Uganda off the top of my head.
Algeria, have you done Algeria?
You're right, there's a lot of African nations.
How do you know so much about that part of the world?
I'm from South Africa.
Well, that would make a lot of sense then.
Madagascar, I'm just trying to think.
Madagascar.
Yeah.
Keep going today.
We could keep going.
Are we getting close to 100?
We've got about 10 to go.
All right.
Hey,
you're very,
very,
Cameroon,
why don't you start thinking of an area
you like?
This is great.
Cameroon,
Malawi,
Mauritania.
Mate,
you've almost taken us to the finish line.
We really appreciate it this morning.
We'll send you out some hell pizza.
Good on you.
Johan, welcome.
Trying to name 100 countries before seven.
Yeah, morning, mate.
Unfortunately, he named all the ones that I was going to tell you.
Oh, but he swooped on in and stole your thunder.
He was very helpful.
Yeah, it's all good. Okay, so very helpful. So, okay.
I guess you don't need me anymore. South Africa.
We don't have South Africa.
Okay, we'll check in South Africa. What was the one you were saying, Johan?
Thailand. Oh, Thailand. Have we gone through? Yeah. Yeah, we haven't done that, have we?
Done the Philippines? We have the Philippines, yeah.
China, Japan.
You've got China?
North and South Korea.
Jeez, we must be nearing 100.
That was 99.
Yeah, we just won away.
Won away.
I don't think we even, like, have we touched on the Caribbean?
Haven't even touched the Caribbean.
Touch the Caribbean there.
Get to a hundy.
Yeah, like Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago.
Bang.
Are we there?
Are we there?
Johan, we did it. Well, I mean, you came in and youago. Bang. We're there. We're there. Johan, we did it.
Well, I mean, you came in and you said someone else took a lot of my thunder,
but then you came up with one that got us to 99, Johan.
All good.
Thanks, mate.
Thank you.
Have yourself a great day.
Appreciate everyone's texts and calls on that one.
That was a lot of fun.
Crazy.
Yeah, 196 countries in total, over 7,000 languages.
What a world we live in, eh?
