Starting point is 00:00:00 This John O'Bien podcast brought to you by HelloFresh, the experts and tastes that Kiwis love. We've got a brand new entertainment reporter to tell us all the things happening in the entertainment world. Nicole Ryan is her name. Alright, we're going live from the Big Apple to the Rotten Apples of New Zealand radio. Nicole, welcome. What's going on guys? Tell us about yourself because this is the first time chatting to you. We really appreciate you coming on and talking about what's happening in America.
Starting point is 00:00:24 You work in radio in America? yes i work on serious xm on hits one um our show is the morning mashup and we do breakfast radio just like you guys i do all the entertainment reporting and um gosh we've been doing this for oh i don't want to date myself maybe 18 years doing a show for 18 years yeah i mean i basically started doing it right out of college so can you tell us does life get any less bleak having to wake up at four o'clock in the Doing a show for 18 years. Yeah. I mean, I basically started doing it right out of college. Can you tell us, does life get any less bleak having to wake up at 4 o'clock in the morning? No. Okay.
Starting point is 00:00:53 And everybody always says to me, like, oh, you must be used to it by now. I'm like, no. I have a freaking mini tantrum every morning when the alarm rings. Like, I have to convince myself that this is the life that I want and I will get up and I will go outside even though the sun has not come up yet. Positive affirmation, yeah. Driving in in silence, I'm always like, name five good things about what you're about to do. That's all that pulls me through. How are things in America?
Starting point is 00:01:16 Because obviously there's a massive election coming up later in the year. Trump, Biden. It's wild. A country so big, so many people. You've got these two. I don't want to age shame anyone, but these people, they're a little bit older. I mean, let's call a spade a spade. We have really crappy options. They both kind of suck. They're both not ideal.
Starting point is 00:01:32 One is like senile and one's like a sociopath. So they're both really not good. And then the sociopath was just convicted of some felonies. So I'm pretty sure you can't even work at McDonald's if you have a felony, let alone be the president.
Starting point is 00:01:47 But clearly, maybe we'll change that. Is there like a third option? Like, we only hear about two options. I'm going with Taylor Swift. I feel like at this point, Taylor Swift, I mean, I feel like we all kind of agree that she could bring us all together. She could fix the world.
Starting point is 00:02:02 Now, and you've been doing your job for 18 years. You must have come across Trump. Yeah, he's been up it serious. I've never interviewed him. But yeah, he was up there when he was promoting his reality shows and, you know, running around saying you're fired. But yeah, like, I mean, he just used to be like this cool, rich business guy that, yeah, you'd see at parties or at events. And you didn't really think too much of him. He was just a rich dude. And then when I heard that he was running for president I was like no he's not this is BS there's no way this is true and I ended up eating my words because it was quite true he's very good at turning stuff around
Starting point is 00:02:35 you know like for a lot of people a controversy like this being convicted would be the end you'd be off and cancelled but for some reason it feels like he'll make this kind of work and even get more popular out of it right yeah because he kind of appeals to like the everyday moron and we have a lot of those in the u.s and like he says things that people wouldn't normally say and i think some people kind of like that like he's not super presidential and also he's good at just like talking in circles like he just says a lot of words and then you're just like oh yeah okay oh yeah that sounds good yeah so i mean he's got a lot of words and then you're just like, oh yeah, okay. Oh yeah, that sounds good. Yeah. So, I mean,
Starting point is 00:03:06 he's got a lot of people fooled. He'd make the perfect radio host, wouldn't he? Just saying some words. Hopefully they make sense somewhere along the line. And the other thing I wanted to ask you too about Donald Trump,
Starting point is 00:03:16 no one's really worried about the fact that he's clearly cheated on his wife. How's Melania feeling about all of this? I don't know. She doesn't speak. She's sort of,
Starting point is 00:03:23 I mean, she might be like a wax figure or Weekend at Bernie's. I'm not sure she's even still with this. I don't know. She doesn't speak. She's sort of, I mean, she might be like a wax figure or Weekend at Bernie's. I'm not sure she's even still with us. It's very bizarre. I do feel bad for her. She's very stoic, but she literally is like a frozen woman that just kind of is there.
Starting point is 00:03:35 And I don't think she wants to be there, but doesn't really have a choice. She's, I mean, as every day passes, she's a day closer to the big payout, I guess. Maybe. Yeah, you have to hope that that's what's going to happen. You have to hope that she's going day closer to the big payout i guess is maybe yeah you have to hope that's what's going to happen you have to hope that she's going to get a large sum of money and then run away and sail off into the sunset live happily ever after it was all worth it in the end
Starting point is 00:03:53 a prediction for us you know like the early stages a lot can change over the next couple of months but who do you see like who could take this out i i have a bad feeling it's going to be trump even though i feel like, even though that's scary, I just have the feeling that ever since he got convicted, more and more people are like, no, this was wrong. They want to prove it wrong and that somehow
Starting point is 00:04:15 he's going to end up in office and I'm moving to another country. Can I come move there? Come do the show with us. Yeah, we'll fill out the immigration forms for you, mate. The hits. The Jono and Ben podcast. Daddy, or P. Diddy, had been in the news quite a lot recently, subject of several lawsuits, including for sexual assault, a whole lot of very serious allegations against Puff Daddy.
Starting point is 00:04:37 Yeah, we head to New York now. Entertainment reporter Nicole Ryan from Sirius Radio over there in the States says Diddy done. Diddy is done. He is done. And he better keep himself very, very quiet because I don't know. I mean, I'm hoping that he's going to get convicted
Starting point is 00:04:52 of some things, but like there's just so much just accusations. I mean, now that we have the video of Cassie, which is horrific and like broke my heart and I think everybody's heart. I just don't know if that, I think like the statute of limitations is too long. I don't know how they're going to convict him,
Starting point is 00:05:08 but there's no way they're not building a whole case against him because he's an animal. What happens with a station like yours? I imagine you would have played a lot of Puff Daddy, P. Daddy songs over the years. What happens now? Yeah, back in the day. And I mean, he came up, I have a very vivid memory.
Starting point is 00:05:21 I was telling this story recently of him coming up. He opened up the studio door. He looked at me and my co-host and he went, oh, hell no. And then he turned around and walked out. I don't know what we did. Maybe we didn't look cool. But guess what? I'm pleased at present day that we never had to interview him and that nothing ever came out because God knows we probably would have said something that would have like sounded incriminating. So what you were meant to interview him and he just walked in and turned out we were yep what and no one ever told us why or what but i mean like i'm okay with it so we just laughed about it it was like you know you guys have probably crazy stories about celebrities that was one of our crazy stories we
Starting point is 00:05:55 were like okay guess we're not doing diddy but i'm fine with that now yeah a lot of people did he do do a lot of people didn't he did he did yeah yeah and so you you feel like all the rumors that we are hearing which are just rumors at the moment there's there's probably a lot of truth to them yeah i mean i've been hearing rumors of all sorts of things regarding him and not great stories for years now but i mean i feel like you hear a lot of these things with like rappers like the illuminati and they've all in this like i, you hear all this crazy stuff and you chalk it up just like, it's like legend. It's like an old wives tale. But yeah, I've heard these things
Starting point is 00:06:29 for a long, long time stories. And then you realize what happened. I think he either killed people because those things were going to come out because that's a rumor that all the people that started Bad Boy with him back in the day that were there from the beginning, there's only one person that's still alive.
Starting point is 00:06:44 What? Yeah, I mean, again, this is all alleged that he kind of took out the people back in the day that were there from the beginning, there's only one person that's still alive. What? Yeah. I mean, again, this is all alleged that he kind of took out the people that could come out and say anything bad about him. Wow. And it's amazing that people can get away with it for so long.
Starting point is 00:06:54 You know, Weinstein was the same. Yeah. I think that there's been a lot of, I don't think those types of things or people can exist that much anymore because of social media. And like, people are like,
Starting point is 00:07:03 and they're, they're willing to talk now. They're willing to come out and be like, this is not okay that this happened to me. And this is not okay that this person in power did this. And I think that's becoming a bit of a trend and probably for the good. Oh, we'll throw one more at you.
Starting point is 00:07:14 Let's go Eminem. Cause he's kind of back now with an album that kind of throws back to some original sort of Slim Shady, Marshall Mathers sounding songs. He seems like he's always been one to kind of almost court controversy. What do you think of his new album? Do you think he's going to be cancelled or is it just kind of Eminem?
Starting point is 00:07:39 No one's cancelling him. And I don't know why anybody's like surprised that this new song came out and that the rest of the album's probably going to be exactly the same he is him this is what he does no one's cancelling him he's very used to quote-unquote backlash but again that's who he is and guess what all like the kids now they like they could care less about him it's all the like the 40 and 50 year olds are like he's back, bro. Eminem's back. You're like, well, have you seen Ben's hair?
Starting point is 00:08:09 He's actually dyed his hair blonde. We call him Ben and Em. Wow, yeah. Let me see. Oh, you're looking good. I like it. Thank you. Everyone's like, you're having a midlife crisis?
Starting point is 00:08:18 Maybe I am. No, I dig it. I mean, I don't know what it looked like before, but I think you look great. And he's pretty happy Eminem's back too. Old Stan over here. Suddenly become more relevant. Hey, Nicole, listen, thank you so much for your time. Lovely to meet you.
Starting point is 00:08:33 Of course. Hey, we'll do it all again next week. I would love that.
