Coterie, an awesome New Zealand band, you'll know them from hits like Cool It Down.
They're a band of brothers, actual brothers that live in Perth in Australia
and come over here from time to time and they've teamed up with Dave Dobbin
to remake this, the iconic New Zealand song.
Yes, 660 have signed them to their record label and they join us in the studio now.
Welcome team.
What's goody? Thanks for having welcome team always in such a good mood and
always looking so good too looking good and hard not to be when you guys are here you spruce yourself
up for us that's good yeah that's nice uh and i don't know how you are in such a good mood because
your schedule at the moment seems relentless you just got back from the uk that's right it's all the act we were utterly devastated with our lives
who came up with the name coterie because there's actually quite a cool meaning behind it right like
i was looking last night a unifying group common interest you know uh you know a coterie of artists
which is quite a nice name for it for you guys right thank you that was my idea yeah yeah that's
nice the most researched interview
starter i've ever heard it's also a brand of diapers too now too apparently
funny story that company actually purchased the instagram handle coterie oh did they and we were
at a bidding war with them offered 50 bucks and they offered five grand and then I offered 55 and they stayed at five grand.
So you were playing hardball there were you? Really hardball.
I was hoping you'd be somewhere in the middle. We're just extremely wealthy musicians.
We're going in low. How has the journey been for you? Because it seems like a whirlwind of
12 to 18 months. That is exactly what it's been. It's been pretty cool though.
Yeah, well good talking about,
you know, last time I think you guys,
fans of 660,
covering their songs
and hanging out with them as well.
They signed you to the label.
Now you guys are borrowing clothes
I'm reading from 660 as well.
Underwear too.
Underwear.
I'm legitimately wearing Machu socks right now.
Oh, they're nice socks too, aren't they?
We're just your local boys
who wrote songs in our garage
and people liked it.
So now they're listening to it and buying tickets to it. That's why it's working. Yeah. tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, tō, Did you have to call him sir while you were recording with him? Did you have to refer to him as sir? Yeah, we called him sir, Uncle Dave.
You actually didn't respond unless you said sir.
He demands it.
He's a lovely gentleman.
He really is.
He's the GOAT.
He's the GOAT.
So how did this come about?
Because you guys play Slice of Heaven in concert,
and then did you just kind of reach out to him?
That's how it happened, bro.
We were touring Aussie,
and we thought we'd throw in
Like an iconic cover
For all of our Aussie and Kiwi fans
And we played it first at a festival
And I think we were three da-da's in
Da-da-da
And 20,000 people erupting
And this is when we knew
This is the best song we've ever written
It was the highlight of our set It was the highlight of our set Way more than Elm Street does It's written. It was the highlight of our set.
It was the highlight of our set.
Way more than Elm Street does.
It's probably going to be the highlight of our career.
And you got Sir Dave Dobbin in the studio with you as well to record it.
We have to thank the fans, bro.
They did a lot of the groundwork.
We actually, we were talking about it behind closed doors
and our fans just kept sending it to Sir Dave,
being like, this is the best version since yours.
The music industry has a rumor.
There's been like 150 attempts to remake this song.
Really?
It's Sir Dave's blessing.
And yeah, it just never felt right for him.
And so this is the first time out of 150.
Wow.
Did you give him $55 that you were going to give to the Nappy brand?
$56, bro.
You may now call us Sir Couture.
Because you guys have done,
you put a wonderful spin on the song as well.
Thank you very much.
Yeah, with your vibe.
What did he say about it when he heard it?
Look, we sent him a couple,
well, we sent him one version
and he just replied back saying,
I love this and I love how dancey it is
and how coterie it is,
which was cool, you know,
because there's a bit of weight
when you touch something as iconic
as Slice of Heaven. People have been telling us it's like the second anthem for the country. It's kind of like, yeah, you know, because there's a bit of weight when you touch something as iconic as Slice of Heaven.
People have been telling us
it's like the second anthem for the country.
It's kind of like, yeah, you're right,
our national anthem in a lot of ways.
And so to touch it, to play with it,
you've got to be respectful,
but we also had to be like true to what we are.
Is that nerve wracking for you guys?
You know, with someone who's a knight,
who's Sue Dave Dolbin,
playing his song to him in the room.
Bro, we're nervous to be here with you guys.
Nah, jokes. here with you guys. Nah, jokes.
I love you guys.
Hey, well, well done, boys.
Congratulations on your huge success.
Lovely down-to-earth human beings.
And we're going to play you a version of Slice of Heaven now.
And you want to introduce it?
What's goody, fam?
It's good to be here on Jono and Ben.
We are Coterie, and this is our new single, Slice of Heaven, featuring Sir Dave Dobbin.
Let's go.
