On this episode of the Wild Wild Web, everything you know about the Titanic could be an absolute lie.
Welcome to the untamed realm of the world's wide web.
A swirling vortex of weirdness, bullying, and self-obsessed social media posts.
In this digital jungle, Jono and Vienna are your fearless guides.
Leading you through the wildest parts of the
Wild Wild Web.
This is the Wild Wild Web.
Yes, you're welcome to the Wild Wild Web.
It's lovely to have you wild, wild characters sitting alongside us.
Ben Boyce, wild.
Megan Pappas, wild.
Are you wild, Megan?
Yeah.
What's the most wild thing you've done? Roll a doobie, probably. Yeah, appas, wild. Are you wild, Megan? Yeah. What's the most wild thing you've done?
Roll a derby, probably.
Oh yeah, that's pretty wild sport.
Yeah.
Bungee jumped.
Aggressive sport.
It's wild.
Yeah.
Yeah, bungee jumping.
I've done it a couple of times.
I'm not thrilled to be hanging off the edge of a building or a bridge.
It looks like they've got this new one in New Zealand.
Have you seen that where you're almost like they've got this new one in New Zealand.
Have you seen that?
Where you're almost like they untie the clip.
You just kind of free fall down into a sort of net thing.
I know I haven't, I've only seen it on Instagram.
I haven't really delved deep into it.
Wait, so you're not attached?
It looks like you're not attached,
but I was like, surely you'd have to be.
What, just chucking people off?
I was like, as I say, I've only seen it on Instagram, so I haven't done a deep dive into it.
God.
Feels like a harness.
I wouldn't mind one in that scenario.
I think it was on the...
Some form.
I don't think...
I did a bungee jump once
and I hated it.
I'll never do it again.
No, it's not, yeah.
And the rope,
when it goes over the edge,
feels so heavy.
Heavy.
It's just going to pull you down.
Yeah.
I mean, once you do it,
it's fun. It's just going to pull you down. Yeah. I mean, once you do it, it's fun.
It's rewarding.
Is it?
Yeah.
But some people love it.
They love it.
They jump off backwards and, you know, blindfolded.
And always the bungee people are always like, shaka.
You know, they're so chill.
Almost too chill.
Yeah.
You know, sometimes we jump off, they're like, oh, I forgot to tie up that.
And they do all these gags
To make your experience
Ten times more terrifying
Have you found it?
I'm sorry
Okay so I found it online
I didn't see this top shot
So there's someone here
Hanging out over the edge
Oh they're dangling
Yeah
Dangling like that
And do they cut the rope?
And then they just
Unclip the rope
Sort of like
Lining them up
Over the net
Down below And then they just Free fall Down rope. So instead of like lining them up over the net down below,
and then they just free fall down into the net.
Wait, are they completely unclip?
It seems to be.
Like, I don't know.
As I say, like, it seems.
That feels wild.
That is wild.
You're out in the open too.
Like, you know, any wind gusts feels like you could be put off.
Like the net's not abnormally big.
It doesn't seem massive, though, is it?
But anyway.
Let's put that up on the Hitspref's Instagramally big. It doesn't seem massive, does it? But anyway. Just put that up
on the Hitsprefers
Instagram.
Wow.
Nope.
Not for me.
Nope.
Not for me.
Where is that?
I think I've got one
in a velocity
valley in Rotorua
and I think I've got
other places around
the world.
Yeah,
so I think,
yeah.
Who's signed off
on that?
It's obviously
safe and healthy
or else you wouldn't be able to do it in this country
that's for sure.
We're kind of like the home of some extreme sports aren't we?
AJ Hackett was kind of like
first person to give that a bash
on a big scale. He mad dogged it off
the Eiffel Tower. Eiffel Tower, yeah.
Like a publicity stunt sort of thing, right?
Yeah, crikey dicks. They're pioneering
that game. Sorry, that's just my
calendar invites coming through there.
I've got to play something off my laptop, which is a nice lead-in to this.
The Titanic, are you familiar?
The boat, yeah.
Or the movie.
Well, everything you've learnt about the Titanic, get ready to unlearn it.
Back after this.
Welcome back.
Here we go.
Excuse the dramatic music, too, in the background titanic never sank i thought it was a load of rubbish until i heard this the ship's owner jp morgan owned two vessels the
titanic and the olympic the olympic was older than the titanic and was in awful condition
supposedly jp JP Morgan intentionally planned
to sink the Olympic because he knew he would be able
to collect a large sum of insurance money.
So he switched the names of the Titanic and the Olympic
to make it appear that the Olympic had sunk
while actually claiming it was the Titanic
and pocketing the insurance.
JP Morgan's competitors were on board the ship
and none of them survived. However, coincidentally, J.P. Morgan was not aboard the ship as he
cancelled his reservations just minutes before departure. Lucky, right? There was a man named
James Fenton who worked on the construction of the ship and survived the sinking.
On his deathbed, his final words were that the Titanic
never truly sunk.
He had known the secret for a
long time, but had been threatened
that something terrible would happen to him
if he revealed the truth.
What do you think about that?
So where is the Titanic thing?
So explain to what happened that it was switched.
The name was switched.
The guy had two boats and he could claim more insurance money
if the Titanic had sunk, not his other boat.
But then he switched the names of the boats
and the Titanic is still there.
The Titanic never sank.
It was another boat.
Right. And he did it to get insurance money. And then all sank. It was another boat. Right.
And he did it to get insurance money.
And then all his buddy competitors were on board.
So the Olympic or whatever was an older boat.
Yeah.
It had been around for a while.
A bit run down, yeah.
So how was it possible that that was so big?
Because the whole point was it was a big new boat, right?
And it was massive.
Oh, look at that.
It was bigger than,
no one's going to be surprised
if the Olympics is out on the water again
because they're like,
we've seen that.
Yeah.
Associated Press have done a deep dive into it.
I don't know if you've done,
have you done any more deep diving into it?
No, I just put,
did you hear?
Just that TikTok video.
They said false,
according to them.
Irrefutable evidence exists
to prove the Titanic is lying
at the bottom of the North Atlantic Ocean
and maritime historians agree it would have been impossible for the Titanic and the
Olympic to have been switched.
Hold on.
I'm feeling this.
This guy.
It's just a name.
The Titanic never sank.
I thought it was a load of rubbish until I heard this.
Until he heard this.
That guy with the voice in the...
There's also this conspiracy claims on TikTok's been played more than 58,000 likes.
The TikTok video's been viewed over 12 million times.
Jonathan.
You always play these on face value,
and then you say, you go around telling everyone these things
without even once, the quick Google.
The whole point of the Titanic was that it was bigger than anything
that's ever sailed before, as in the Olympics.
It took me longer to find the bungee jump thing
than it did to find the...
They would know there's more than just the name
that made the Titanic.
You can't take TikTok on face value.
TikTok's just like what you say on radio.
Half of it's not true.
You've got to fact check some stuff
before you go around.
Someone's taken the time out of their day
to put that up,
and I'm going to believe it.
Why else would you put the effort into it?
Views.
How many pranks and things have you done
over the years
and duping people, you know?
Yeah.
And people take them, you know?
Is anything real?
Is anything real?
Probably not.
No.
Well, there you go.
I won't.
Lesson learned there.
No, but it's not, though, because we say this to you often.
And then you'll find another ticket.
Oh, that's another thing.
But, hey, if it brings you joy to, like, watch that and believe it,
then go for it.
It does.
It does.
Yeah, that's fine.
It's just don't go around saying it's facts.
Listen to this yarn.
And then more people know it's the fake news situation.
Well, then that's a huge, very defamatory towards JP Morgan.
It would be if that was the case.
Hey, buddy, no.
No.
I double booked myself.
At the last minute, I had to cancel.
I don't know.
Anyway, that was a quick thing. But how do you minute I had to cancel. I don't know. Anyway, that was a quick thing.
But how do you know what your reading is?
I don't know.
The Associated Press might be pranking us.
I just feel like in terms of massive boats,
it would be more than the name that would throw people off, you know?
It's not like the America's Cup where they've got two boats,
one's a practice one, the other one they can flip the net.
They chuck out the old one on the water and just go,
Oh, Titanic.
We wrote on it, Titanic. They're like, yeah, Titanic. They all turn up and they're like, Oh, the photos on they can flip the net. They chuck out the old one on the water and just go, oh, Titanic, we wrote on it, Titanic.
They're like, yeah, Titanic.
They all turn up, they're like, oh, the photos on the internet
looked a lot better than the...
It looks bigger than this.
Oh, it's the way they take the angles of it.
Team move.
Always make it look better, like the Airbnb you stay in or something.
Mind you, then I'm just looking at the first comment on TikTok.
It said, so I suppose they also organised the iceberg.
Yeah.
Because, I mean, it was an accident right
Yeah
Okay well listen
What you've just heard
Absolute nonsense
Well it might be
It might not be
I just wanted to balance it out
That's fine
It was a fun chat
Yeah
Well don't I feel like an idiot
Came on there
I was like got some great content
For the wild wild web
Must have been a waste of everyone's time
Every time I see one of those videos on TikTok I go to the comments Came on there, I was like, got some great content for the Wild World Web. That's been a waste of everyone's time.
Every time I see one of those videos on TikTok, I go to the comments and usually there's like a thing down the bottom that's like debunked or,
or you can just Google it, Jono, if you believe it that much.
Okay, okay.
Well, listen, tomorrow I'm not going to bring anything from TikTok to the Wild.
It's the Wild World Web.
That was wild.
Yeah, TikTok is the Wild.
TikTok is the Wild World Web the wild wild web that was wild yeah TikTok is the wild TikTok is the wild
wild web
served the purpose
have you seen
those mermaid videos
on TikTok
no
there's like
one
there's one
yeah and it says
it's been verified
by like people
who do videos
that it hasn't been
doctored and stuff
can you show me
oh you know how
like when you see
videos of people
swimming in mermaid suits and have knees?
That's the giveaway, right?
Whereas this tail and the water doesn't look like it has knees.
So I reckon it's an actual mermaid.
Yeah, there's a lot of people on TikTok that believe, and apparently this is a science guy.
There's a lot of people on TikTok who just believe the video I play too.
So let's take it with a grain of salt.
Maybe, Ben, you can go to the Associated Press.
We'll just fact check the mermaids on TikTok.
We've always discussed the mermaids would be a lot less appealing
if they had a fish head and normal legs, wouldn't they?
A fish head and what do you mean?
Well, if you swapped her around the other way.
So, yeah, she's got a fish bottom.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
Not as attractive attractive are they
but then we seem
pretty chill
hooking up with
half a fish
yeah true
yeah
the little mermaid
was all basty
right
yeah
it's the better way
around of the options
though isn't it
it is
the more sort of
appealing
fish heads are not
who did she hook up with
it was
Eric wasn't it
the prince Prince Eric yeah so if you're like if Eric said They're not. Who did she hook up with? It was Eric, wasn't it? The prince.
Prince Eric.
Yeah.
So if you're like, if Eric said, hey, meet my missus.
But she wasn't a mermaid when they first fell in love.
Oh, yeah.
But then he at some point discovered she was half fish.
Yes.
And was still pretty sure of that.
Yeah.
That would be a big red flag for me.
She didn't talk at first, too.
She had no voice as well, right?
Well, he fell in love with her singing voice
and then when he saw her again,
she wasn't talking.
And he's like,
oh, she's all right.
I like that.
I think she doesn't say much.
Not too lippy.
And then I guess
you'd have to be careful.
If you're in love,
you're in love.
If you are in love with a fish.
Yeah.
We've done a lot of padding here, Megan.
No, but there's like
creepy mermaid videos. I can't find the, yeah. Have you found, we've done a lot of padding here, Megan. Oh, no, but there's like creepy mermaid videos.
I can't find the one that I'm.
Well, we'll.
No, that's someone faffing around in the.
Okay.
Well, listen, if it's, I believe you.
Oh, look at that.
I believe it's on there.
What's that?
This is a different one, but I think that one looks like it's got legs.
But wait for the face.
Is that meant to be a real mermaid?
Yeah.
Oh.
That's creepy, right?
Yeah, it does.
Wait, wait, Ben, wait for the face.
That's not a human.
I don't know.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh, look at the creepy face.
It looks like a dog face.
It is a, yeah.
It's quite a creepy looking face, isn't it?
Yeah.
Oh, could that be AI?
Yeah.
It kind of looks like a...
It was going quite slow, wasn't it?
So it wasn't like someone struggling away.
You ever tried to do Butterfly?
Yeah.
Yeah, it's a really hard, you know,
and that's kind of essentially the kick,
the mermaid kick.
The butterfly kick, yeah.
She looks like something that would have
a horror movie series base around her, doesn't she?
Mermaid, one, two, three, four, five.
Yeah, well, that's been us on the Wild Wild Web today.
Go and have a wonderful day,
whether you're a mermaid or just a fully functioning human being,
and we'll catch you tomorrow.
