November 14. Kia ora, welcome. It's the podcast intro. Jonathan here, Benjamin over there, Joel Harrison.
Good morning.
Lovely to have you around here, Joel. Went to Friday Jams yesterday. You enjoyed that, Joel?
It was an awesome day. Awesome night. Free ticket. Can't complain.
They're saying online, messy. Messy was one review. Messy. The crowd went messy.
I don't know who wrote that one, but there was some messy people in the crowd But hey look they're just having fun
I think I was going to say no one got hurt
But I did actually see one young dude in the back of an ambulance
Which didn't look too good
What did he do?
You don't know
No it looked like he may have had a bit of a substance
A dilemma with a bit of a substance
Which is obviously not nice
But I guess when there's 30,000 people
It's bound to happen to someone
Well that's why you've got to go get them tested
Don't you nowadays? You can get them tested, don't you, nowadays?
You can get them tested.
There is the testing going on at festivals like this, right?
Normally I just trust because Ben's been selling to me for years,
so I just trust.
I just have his good word about it.
I've got my good name to it, mate.
The Ben Boy stamp of approval.
He gets trustworthy.
Out of all the drug dealers you know, he's probably the most reliable,
most concerned about your safety
I'll do one now
just a little bit
see if that's what
I do
that's always what
I do
I'm always one of
those testing people
if they're like
oh yeah this is
no good mate
and then they're
like
yeah they'll have
a hell of a work
Christmas party
they're just
stockpiling it
over 12 months
with the festivals
it does feel like
a set up too
doesn't it
like bro yeah
cool bring him in
we'll get him checked
and then woo, you know?
But it's for the greater good
of safety.
People don't, you know, unfortunately,
you know, depending on which way you
but it's illegal, right?
But people are going to do it and so I guess
if they're going to do it, then it's better to be
safe under the circumstances. You sound like my mate's
mum when we were teenagers. Yeah, I'm saying don't do it.
I know they're going to do it, but if they're going to do it,
they're going to do it under my house.
Yeah, well, don't do it.
I'm not recommending for a second
that people do it, but it's...
But it's, yeah,
putting safety measures in place.
That was awkward to say,
like just a front foot,
but just, you know what I mean?
Yeah, I know what you're saying.
Yeah.
But if you do want some safe stuff,
you know who to go to.
Especially after me just agreeing
with the fact that I've been
thrown under the bus.
And Ben, you went to the Black Ferns
on Saturday night.
Had a wonderful time.
It was awesome.
Awesome.
Not too many people getting sent home in ambulances that I saw.
You couldn't get two more polar opposite events.
It was cool.
It was a really awesome family event.
You know, the crowd, lots of kids.
It was awesome.
As I said to you.
No customers there for you?
No.
Not on that one.
It was a quiet night.
It was a quiet night.
As far as that goes. But such a quiet night. It was a quiet night as far as that goes
but such a great
I'm still going along
with this
but a great night
to be yelling
and screaming
and losing your voice
and what a game
and the crowd
staying afterwards
like as a New Zealand
crowd you know
the poise were there
there were signs
there was chanting
it was just great
it was awesome to see
a New Zealand crowd
like that
so hopefully
it's the start
of many more games like that for the Blackfans.
Would you say it's the best live sporting event you've ever been to?
In New Zealand?
Absolutely.
Yeah.
We were lucky enough, John and I, we went a couple of weeks ago to the Rams game in America.
And that was incredible.
70,000 people.
And we were like, oh, everyone's into it.
And that felt like New Zealand doing that.
It was great to have it.
They have everyone cheering and everyone doing it.
Yeah, it was awesome.
Maybe the All Blacks will open up for them one day.
Yeah.
Well, yeah.
Flip it around.
Yeah.
Why not?
That would actually be a really cool thing to do.
Yeah.
They should do.
Yeah.
They should do it.
Great.
On to it.
And I reckon here's my thing.
Scott Robinson, Black Ferns coach.
Oh, put Razor Ray in there.
Wayne Smith's done a great job with the Black Ferns side, but he's... he's you're saying wayne smith you've had your time well he stepped out
no he said i'm not doing anymore he's only coming in for nine months and that was it so he's like
i'm done i'm out he was pulled out of retirement like one of those action scenes from a movie like
we need you you're back he's like i'm retired he's got a beard and he's wood chopping in the
woods or something like that but they pulled him back and so he's he's out. So I'm like, they need a coach.
Scott Robinson.
Why does it have to be a man?
Why can't it be a female coach?
Okay.
I was just here.
It doesn't have to be.
You're right.
You're right.
You're 100% correct.
But you chose someone with a penis.
Only because Scott Robinson is a supreme coach.
I'm not saying.
We don't want to lose him.
Yeah.
But I'm not saying there's not other worthy coaches of any gender out there.
All right.
You've really had the last three minutes.
You're a really poor guy.
Poor, poor guy.
I'm on a roller coaster.
He's been stuck in some...
Look at all the calls coming through, mate.
How much do you want?
How much?
Okay, enjoy the podcast.
Have a wonderful Monday.
We'll catch you back tomorrow.
The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast.
The Black Ferns is all that anyone's still talking about since Saturday night.
How good was that?
Oh, what a game.
What a game.
Everyone on the edge of their seats, those final minutes.
My God.
Yeah, it was pretty stressful and tense there.
You went along.
What was it like in the stadium?
It was incredible.
It was probably the best sporting occasion I've ever been to in New Zealand.
You had a capacity crowd.
Apologies to Sienna's weekly netball.
Yeah, I mean, that's great.
I mean, that's great.
But this is, you know, a crowd, which is kind of cool.
It was filled with a lot of families.
You know, there's so many swearing, you know, like. You said outside there weren't as many munters there.
Yeah, which was good.
It was really cool.
We took the whole family along and it was so awesome to see.
I mean, everyone is just so proud of the Black Ferns.
And the way that they obviously play the game on the field,
but the way they hold themselves off the field,
they play with so much joy.
It kind of made me – I think I like rugby again.
For a while, rugby was a bit – for me, anyway, I went a bit high-humber.
Watching them, I'm like, I love it.
They're just happy to be there, aren't they?
You're right.
And to play in front of a sold-out
Eden Park too,
I imagine Kendra Coxedge,
her final game.
Jeez, what a way to go out.
Now have a listen to this.
This was right at the end of the game.
England, who had been amazing
in the Fords,
had a line-out right at the end
and they could have won the game
right at the end.
Have a listen to the crowd
right at the end here.
It's on New Zealand's side! have i could have won the game right at the end have a listen to the crowd right at the end here and they couldn't control it
and in your life have you ever seen anything like it how cool is that that's from the spark
sport but he was in the ground and you know recording that? That's from Sparksport. But he was in the ground and recording that around.
Here's it in the crowd. It's just incredible.
England!
All right, we've got 10 seconds to go.
England!
England have the ball. That's a full-time time.
Have we won it?
They're about to play the line-out.
Oh, the backboard!
Yes!
They win!
Oh my goodness!
They win!
I think we win!
I don't know if we can hear anyone now.
Oh my goodness!
I think we're going to win the World Cup!
Yes!
Yes!
That was amazing.
It was incredible.
I don't want to say your commentary wasn't quite as good as the Sparks.
Why didn't you play Ricky Snell first?
I mean, she's incredible.
Yeah.
Like, why did you do that?
It was just a nice comparison, wasn't it, Joel?
She was great.
I wasn't.
I don't know if we've won it.
Have we won it?
Maybe we've won it.
I was in the crowd.
It was so awesome.
I mean, just that.
It was just inspiring.
As a dad who has a couple of daughters as well,
it was so awesome to see women's sport out there,
the full crowd,
and the people that they can look up to.
It was incredible.
I imagine even five years ago,
the Black Ferns would never have imagined that crowd.
Yeah.
It's come a long way.
It's fantastic for the sport.
One of my favorite things at the end of the game
was I was trying to get a nice rap from my daughters
who reflected on it beautifully,
which I'll play a poem that they wrote. A lovely little poem they wrote for the Black Ferns. I'll play that later. But this was at the end of the game was I was trying to get a nice rap from my daughters who reflected on it beautifully, which I'll play a poem that they wrote, a lovely little poem they wrote
from the Black Ferns.
I'll play that later.
But this was at the end of the game and Indy who, you know, she doesn't get to scream at
home, you know, because every time you scream at home it's, all right, keep it down.
But at the game.
How much screaming do they want to do?
They always want to scream and run around.
And this was her at the game.
She just wanted to scream.
The second title, New Zealand.
New Zealand. New Zealand!
How do you feel, Wendy?
Scream!
That's a scream.
Talk some words for the radio.
This is for the radio on Monday.
Oh, hi, radio.
What a great game.
Yeah.
Pisky Dan, always trying to get radio.
Say some words for the radio mate
She's like I just want to scream
I'm allowed to scream here
And it's fine
And no one's going to tell me off
It was incredible
We want to try and connect some people
Throughout the show this morning
To the Black Ferns
So if you've got any connection at all
Maybe you're mates with them
Maybe you're family with them
Maybe you're part of the squad or whatever
4487 on the text machine
Is this the sound of a radio show
That can't actually get Black Ferns?
Yes Tenuous tie-ins to the team Because they're probably still partying right now or whatever, 4487 on the text machine. Is this the sound of a radio show that can't actually get Black Ferns? Yes.
Tenuous tie-ins to the team because they're probably still partying right now.
Rightfully so.
Very loose connections to the Black Ferns.
We'll take anything over the next three hours.
Well done to the Black Ferns.
It was incredible.
What a win.
The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast.
It's just another motivational Monday. Yeah, right. So we're in the changing room of the week. Everyone's just had Motivational Monday.
Yeah, right.
So we're in the changing room of the week.
Everyone's just had a shower.
We're going to get you out there.
Get you out there to straddle the week.
Juice you up.
Now, Obama.
President Obama.
You look online.
He's just got motivational speech after motivation.
The guy was just dripping in motivation.
And this is a speech he was giving to a bunch of students,
which I think will be applicable to
everyone listening in particular you ben boys okay where you are right now doesn't have to
determine where you'll end up no one's written your destiny for you you write your own destiny
you make your own future that's why today i'm calling on each of you to set your own goals
and do everything you can to meet them but whatever you resolve to do, I want you to commit to it. I want you to really work at it
I know that sometimes you get that sense from TV that you can be rich and successful without any hard work
That your ticket to success is through rapping or basketball or being a reality TV star
Chances are you're not to be any of those things.
The truth is being successful is hard
and you won't necessarily succeed at everything
the first time you try.
That's okay.
Some of the most successful people in the world
are the ones who've had the most failures.
So there you go.
My point that I wanted to make to you is
give up on your rapping basketball reality TV career.
But I wanted to be a rapping reality star.
I know you'd booked studio time to do your gangster rap album.
You'd applied for STD Island or whatever it is,
the reality show.
But it's time to give up on those dreams, Ben.
Okay?
Okay.
Isn't he bloody good?
He is good, eh?
Oh, compare him to old buddy,
have to go to sleep at 4.30 in the afternoon, Biden.
He wasn't good.
He might get to the end of the chase, Biden.
He might do.
5.30 is a late night.
I might just go watch the end of the chase with Bradley Walsh.
Motivational Monday.
Hopefully they get you juiced up for the week.
The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast.
Scrolling through your feed.
Welcome to Two Guys Pretend.
They know what they're talking about.
Scrolling, what's happening, Ben?
Well, it was a massive weekend in sport.
The Kiwis in the league just lost.
It was a heartbreaking loss to Australia in the semi-final of the Rugby League World Cup.
The All Blacks this morning, if you missed it, just beat Scotland.
Scotland were up by quite a lot.
Israel Adesanya as well lost his UFC belt, his middleweight belt, over the weekend.
Yeah, which looked like he was leading on points, right?
Yeah, and geez, it's a brutal sport, eh, when you watch it.
My daughter Poppy was watching it with me.
She's like, turn it off! Turn it off!
I was like, Dad's paid $39.95 for this.
You can't just look outside or something.
I know it's hard to watch.
Hard to watch for Drake, too, the rapper.
He put $2 million on Israel to win.
And only paying, I say only paying $2.9 million.
But it's a big risk, I would say.
Doesn't Drake have a jumbo jet?
Yeah, I know.
I think he's a rich chuck of coke.
I know, it's a lot of money.
Israel will be back, though.
It's a shame to see him lose.
But all the talk this morning, and we're going to continue that talk all morning about the Black Ferns.
It was so good to watch over the weekend.
And Black Fern star Ruby Toohey, she gave a medal away,
which is a pretty awesome thing to do at the end of the game.
She encountered a fan who she'd met a couple of weeks back.
Lucia is her name, who just recently recovered from leukemia.
Lucia's dream was to be a Black Fern.
Ruby remembered her.
The story had stuck with her.
And after the game, she gave her Rugby World Cup winning medal away.
What a wonderful gesture.
Did she just stumble across her in the crowd?
She was walking around and then she saw it and she handed it over.
So it was a pretty incredible thing.
I think it was a lot of tears from the family.
And also how cool was this at the end of the game?
Ruby Tuohy getting the crowd to bust out some song.
That's pretty awesome, eh?
How did she end up with the mic?
At the end of the game, they were sort of passing the mic around
and having a chat to the crowd like that.
So that's what she did.
She is awesome.
She is wonderful.
And she did a wonderful speech in an interview after the game
saying this is not just our team,
it's all the players that have gone before us.
This is for them.
That's really cool.
They're the ones who paved the way and did the hard yard, she said.
So congratulations again.
Jono and Ben will continue to say congratulations
until nine o'clock this morning.
Oh, it was so awesome.
I mean, you're just reflecting on just an amazing, amazing night.
And also we're tenuously tying people into the Black Ferns victory today.
So if you are associated with the team,
maybe you birthed one of the team.
Maybe you made them a coffee at a cafe once.
We'll take anyone.
Over the next three hours, 0800 THE HITS 4487.
Our celebration of the Black Ferns continues all morning.
We're very proud of you.
It is THE HITS.
You've got Jono and Ben.
THE HITS, the Jono and Ben podcast.
Big weekend in the Canterbury region.
We were there at the AMP show in Christchurch.
I went along the agricultural show.
Huge few days, obviously, with Cup Week and then the agricultural show.
It's a great time, Christchurch.
Yeah, we're the
travelling chip salesmen,
Heartland Chips.
We've got our chips out there.
We turned up in our solar system,
very flamboyant suits
for a rural A&P show.
They are very bright, aren't they?
You don't remember,
you kind of forget how bright they are
until you turn up somewhere like that
and everyone's got their sort of,
you know, the swan dryers on.
Collars up.
Stubbies.
Stubbies. Yeah, yeah. You said, you know, the swan dries on. Collars up. Stubbies.
Shirts.
Moleskins.
You said, don't worry, we'll blend.
Blend in.
That's what you told me in the car on the way there.
Yeah.
Well, we didn't.
We didn't in our solar system suits.
Then we had a photo with a real life unicorn.
Yeah.
There was a mini little unicorn there.
Horn and everything.
Yeah.
Looked like a My Little Pony.
Yeah.
It was adorable.
So we know that.
Us with our solar system suits and that unicorn,
it was too much colour. Too much colour in one photo. So we went over there. Us with our solar system suits and that unicorn, it was too much colour.
Too much colour in one photo.
So we went there and we gave away some of our Heartland chips.
Of course, you can get one $10,000 with a chip pick as well
if you find our Heartland chips in store and take a photo.
But you did something that embarrassed us.
And this is the two individuals that were wearing suits
that were covered in planets and space.
We look like travelling children's entertainers when we wear those suits.
We did.
Just going from one birthday to another.
But yeah,
we're walking through a field of horses.
They were having sort of an equestrian day and,
you know,
the parading of the horses and whatever.
And I'm not entirely across the protocol of how to compliment a horse and its owner.
Yeah.
I don't know if you need to compliment the horse as you go.
This is my point.
Because as you keep going along, we pass many people on horses.
Brushing their horses.
Walking their horses along.
You kept saying.
That's a good looking horse.
You keep saying it.
Then we'd see another one.
You'd go, oh, that's a good looking horse
but the way he'd say it would just made me go well oh no i was trying to blend in and clearly
hitting on horses wasn't the right approach no made me just keep made me feel weird and
icky inside i was like what's he want to do these horses yeah i mean they were definitely on the rt
after we passed through the stables weird man hitting on horses back here you can tell they
didn't know how to take it either.
You're like, oh, that's a good-looking horse,
and they'd be like...
Well, what do you say?
What do I say?
Good morning.
How's it going?
You know, enjoy the A&P show.
But they were good-looking.
They were like the Harry Styles of horses, these horses.
Well-groomed, handsome, good-looking horses.
I was starting to worry about you.
People were like, oh, thanks, I guess.
The owners.
Yeah, they were...
They didn't know how to take it.
They were quite put off by it.
Oh, I just never look one in the mouth and always give them a compliment.
That's what I've learned about horses.
The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast.
Joining us right now from Australia is a man who's inspired me to come up with something,
a similar idea, which I'll tell you a wee bit more about later.
His name is Josh Eastwell.
He traveled around all 280 Bunnings stores in Australia,
Bunnings Warehouse stores in Australia.
I mean, it's such a big country, so many Bunnings Warehouse stores.
And he ate a sausage and bread at every one of them.
He joins us. Good morning. How are you doing?
Yeah, very well, mate. Yourself?
Oh, we're good. Nice to talk to you.
Now, you have achieved something pretty incredible.
We're in a big, huge, without a word of a lie, admiration for what you did.
Explain to people that didn't know what you achieved in Bunnings stores in Australia.
Yeah, sure.
So basically, the whole crux of it is I got a sausage in bread from every Bunnings store in the country.
So this is off your own bat.
You've financed your way around Australia and had a sausage at every Bunnings.
Now, how many sausages in total?
How many stores did you visit?
It was 300 or something like that.
It was quite a few.
Every now and then you'd grab a cheeky second snag,
but it was quite a few.
So you could have tipped over the 500 sausage mark
if you've had two at a location.
Yeah, definitely.
Yeah, definitely threw back a few snags.
500 could be in there, but at least 300 I'd decide.
So, wow, there's hundreds and hundreds of bunning stores in Australia.
How long did it take you to go around and visit them all?
It was supposed to be an eight-month stint.
So basically I just mapped out the country, eight months, easy,
knock it off, and then COVID hit.
So it dragged out the two years.
So it definitely wasn't the ideal scenario,
but two years to get it done,
because obviously the snags only operate on the weekend.
I don't know how it is in New Zealand,
but in Australia, it's only a weekend situation.
The innocent victims of COVID.
Just a sausage-eating record.
It just goes by the wayside.
Two years, you've got to put the whole thing on pause.
Do you know, we were talking about this when you made news and it was being read out i could see
my friend ben here he loves going on these ludicrous missions you and him would be great
for you and i could tell like he's gonna drag my sorry ass around bunning stores around new zealand
to have sausages and i'm gathering that's why you've got Josh on the show today. Let's just say right now.
We're just talking to Josh.
If there's some ideas that
may eventuate after this conversation,
they may happen, but right now we're talking to him
about Josh. I blame you, Josh. This is all on you.
Mate, it's quite a journey.
Get into it, I reckon.
Oh, you think? Well, if we were
hypothetically going to get into it,
did you get sick of sausages at all?
When I was doing Victoria, I did 25 in one day.
I mean, bro, that day I was pretty sick of it, yeah.
25 in a day?
That's huge, isn't it?
You push through it.
You get the job done.
How much do you think it cost you, Josh?
This must have cost thousands.
It's definitely up there.
Well, doing Western Australia, I drove to Western Australia from Sydney.
So it was three days across the Nullarbor and five days from Perth to Broome.
That trip alone in fuel would have been up around five grand, I think.
So did they know when you turned up there by the end of it?
Well, you know, there must have been like,
you must have been a bit of a local hero around all the Bunnings stores.
Well, we finished up in Darwin and actually all the locals got around it.
So it was a pretty big finale event up there in Darwin.
Oh, that's pretty awesome.
We went around every bunning store in Australia, had a sausage,
hundreds and hundreds of bunning stores.
Which way does the sausage need to sit in the bread?
Not straight up the middle, corner to corner.
Corner to corner?
Oh, diagonally, yeah? Yeah, yep. Sausage need to sit in the bread. Not straight up the middle. Corner to corner. Corner to corner?
Oh, diagonally, yeah.
Yeah, yep.
Do you do bread rolls or slice of bread up that way?
Slice of bread normally at the bunning stores that I've visited around the country.
Yeah, that is the correct way to do it. And you get out to Sydney, Australia, and sometimes I'll do them like that.
They'll cut the sausage up and put it between two slices of bread.
It's absolutely ludicrous.
Diagonal on the bread, bit of sauce, done.
You're at least at a sausage connoisseur where you would be.
You've eaten hundreds of sausages around the country.
Listen, I tell you what, you've got Nicole Kidman, Hemsworth,
Josh, Australian heroes, all Australian heroes.
He doesn't know how to take it.
He's humble as well.
I don't know if I live up to that calibre.
We'll take it.
Oh, Josh, it's been lovely talking to you.
Do you mind if we...
Here we go.
Here we go.
I just want to say, hypothetically,
I was going to drag my mate along
and visit every Bunnings store in New Zealand.
You've got Australia.
Could we look at New Zealand, that territory,
and go around and get a sausage at every Bunnings?
Mate, go for it.
Eat your heart out.
And the sausage.
Oh, Josh.
So nice chatting to you, buddy,
and congratulations on achieving something bloody incredible.
Thanks a lot, gentlemen.
It means a lot, you know.
It's up there.
A man who ate 280 sausages at every Bunnings warehouse store in Australia
gave us our blessing to do it in New Zealand.
We'll have more on that tomorrow.
More on that tomorrow. We'll see if we can get
some wheels in motion
The Hits
The Jono and Ben Podcast
That's a heck of a tune
it's thirsty murk

The Black Ferns
what an incredible performance
Saturday night
in Eden Park
and this morning
we're trying to connect four people with a game of Connect Four to The Black Ferns, what an incredible performance Saturday night in Eden Park and this morning we're trying to connect four
people with a game of Connect Four to the Black Ferns.
Connect Four. We've mentioned a few
amazing people so far. Someone
who was an organiser who helped bring the World
Cup to New Zealand. Which is the appearance
of the players. Yeah.
And now we're going to speak to Spark
Sport commentator, Ricky
Swinell-Morena.
Morena, how are you?
We're doing all right.
How's the voice?
It's actually, well, not too bad, surprisingly,
because it's been a big few days, to be fair.
I can imagine.
It's been a big tournament.
So incredible to be there.
But you did such an amazing job.
Here was the final moments of the Black Ferns winning the World Cup
on Spark Sport.
And in your life, have you ever seen anything like it?
From the depths of despair to World Cup winners once more.
New Zealand are the champions.
Oh, rock solid commentary there from Swinell.
Do you write that stuff or is that just all freestyle?
No, well, you kind of, you sort of, before a game like that,
being such a big game, you have to think through
what the possible scenarios are and then hope that
when it comes to the moment, you don't completely
ball it up, basically.
So awesome.
It gives me goosebumps just listening to that again.
It must have been incredible to call the game.
I mean, it was incredible for me to be there, but for you to call it,
it must have been just so special.
Yeah, it really was.
Before the game, people kept coming up,
like, oh, you're doing a World Cup final at New Zealand home.
I was trying to keep it pretty level.
And then I think afterwards it was quite overwhelming
because the whole situation was overwhelming, I think.
And so there was probably a massive blub of tears
at about three o'clock in the morning after the final.
But yeah, like it was just a special night all round.
That was, yeah, those were 10 seconds, those final moments.
Ricky Swinell with us, Spark Sport commentator.
What does it mean?
This whole, it's more than just winning a trophy.
Yeah, it is.
I've kind of been trying to put my finger on it
for the last 24
hours or so, even the last
weeks of what's changed because
eight weeks ago I wasn't convinced
that people were going to show up.
So yeah, it
feels like a moment. It feels like something
has shifted. I hope
that everyone who has come along for
this ride can keep coming with us because
the Women's game's
only going to grow and get better and these women as we've all seen they are as good a people as
they appear to be they are exactly that they are fun they're friendly they will do anything for
for their whanau for their for their fans and for the game and um yeah so i i hope everyone just
laps it up and enjoys it and they can they can enjoy this moment as much as they seem to be anyway.
And Mia, I took my daughters along who love the game.
It was so awesome to be there and they were so inspired by it.
But having yourself commentating,
having the team do so well on the field and off the field as well,
I mean, hopefully you guys have changed sport in New Zealand for the better.
Yeah, look, I hope so.
We get so caught up in sport, right,
and the winning and the losing all the time
that we forget sometimes that it's just an inherently good thing.
And, you know, we want kids to be playing sport
and they don't have to be black fans or all black, whatever,
just getting out and having a rock about with your mates is cool.
And there's so many jobs, like for your girls,
you know, they might not be the best players,
but they can be commentators or they can be camera women.
Yeah, I feel like we've probably got to
that point. It's taken a while for
people like me who've been around for a bit. You're like,
oh, alright, we're here. This is cool.
What are your thoughts
and feelings on your white heterosexual
male? Where are we?
Big stand
on white heterosexual males.
When are we going to get a break?
Middle-aged, middle-aged.
Stop it.
It's not about you.
It's not about you, Bri.
That was the coolest thing, though.
Like, that was what I never expected to see.
Kiwi, middle New Zealand, swinging poi.
Like, hello?
When was that ever going to happen?
Oh, it was scary.
And just loving the game for what it is, right?
Like, the women play a different game.
They don't compare it to the men.
And getting amongst it. So, I reckon you'll be okay. Yeah, mate, hopefully we'll play a different game. They don't compare it to the men and getting amongst it.
So,
so I reckon you'll be okay.
Hopefully we'll get a great one.
Now Ricky,
you did an amazing job commentating.
You did.
Now my friend Ben here,
he went along to the game.
He took it upon himself to just do some commentary for some reason.
In the grandstand.
Behind the scenes, we're like, I'm going to be in the crowd
and you guys record some stuff of the game, you know,
just so we can play it on Monday morning.
I'd like to get a professional commentator's feedback
on your commentary.
Let's have a listen, Ricky.
Here we go.
All right, we've got 10 seconds to go.
Here we go.
England have the ball. That's a full-time sign.
Have we won it?
They're about to play the line-out.
Go back to it!
Yes!
England have we done it?
No.
A little confused, not sure what's going on.
What do you think?
Well, that's probably the first point is knowing what's going on.
Everyone has to start somewhere.
He's got potential.
Yeah, look, I'm very emotional.
I'm an emotional fan.
There was tears.
It was a few beers deep as well.
It was an amazing atmosphere.
That never helps.
Don't commentate.
Trust me.
Ricky Swinell, well done on a fantastic tournament.
It was so inspiring to be there and to hear your voice on the broadcast as well.
Well done.
Thank you so much.
Thanks for having me, guys.
Anytime, mate.
Literally, we've got a lot of air time to fill.
We'll take you again this time tomorrow.
The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast.
Friday Jams live yesterday in Auckland looked incredible at Western Springs.
Yeah, 30,000 people as well.
Macklemore, unfortunately, a TLC.
Someone had COVID in their party, so they couldn't come here,
which is a bit of a shame.
It is a shame.
Now, Producer Joel, you went along.
Yeah.
One word to sum up the event.
Movie.
Movie?
And I'm not going to ask any follow-up questions.
Just give a word to... Now, can I ask you another question?
Did you just pluck the first word that came to your head?
It was a movie, Mark.
It was something out of a movie.
It was...
Okay, let's speak of your movie.
Well, listen, while you were enjoying the likes of Drew Hill
and Macklemore on stage yesterday.
And Shugger.
And Shugger.
His song, It Wasn't Me, in the background, what did he have on the big screens?
They were flashing up photos of notorious cheaters.
You've got Bill Clinton, Tiger Woods.
I don't know whose touch it was.
It wasn't me.
It was a good touch.
I reckon Tiger and Bill are like, mate, it was...
Yeah, keep bringing it down.
It's time to a changed man.
But while you were doing that,
I was out doing charity work.
I don't like, you know, publicly,
I don't like to brag about my charity work, Ben Boyce.
Well, no one else has brought this up right now.
No one else has said,
hey, Jono, why don't you talk about your charity work?
Funny you mentioned that.
Yeah, well, I used to go to a charity.
You're like, Jono Pryor wants to talk about this.
It was a, one of those ones, like a fundraiser,
and you can't say, it was a situation where you can't say no.
Yeah.
You know?
A good course.
You did one the other night too.
Yeah, yeah.
And everything was going swimmingly well, okay?
And then I open up the floor, just some audience banter, okay?
With you, don't do it.
Audience banter, high risk, high reward, the old audience banter. I'd say high risk don't do it. Audience banter. High risk, high reward,
the old audience banter.
I'd say high risk,
no reward when you're doing it.
I've seen you do some before.
And I've got a handsome gentleman
up to spin a winning wheel.
Because I've seen you before.
One of the things you like to do
for some reason
is you like to say,
just get everyone out of your seats.
I've seen you do that as well.
Get on up there.
The Kiwis hate that.
You would hate that.
Yeah, we're at a funeral.
Get up there. Everyone out of your seats. And then when they do, everyone's up there. The Kiwis hate that. You would hate that. Yeah, we're at a funeral. Get up there.
Everyone's so cheery.
And then when they do,
everyone's like up there
and they're like,
how long do we stand up there for?
Do we sit down?
What's going on?
Why does he want us to sit?
Well, I never say
you sit back down, do I?
No, you kind of leave them
guessing and that's
a fun thing to do.
But I got a guy out
to spin like a winning wheel
to win a meat pack
or something
and I was just getting
the banter,
the free-flowing banter
happening on mic,
okay, in front of about 200 people.
And I said,
sorry, everybody,
but he's taken.
I know he's handsome,
but he's taken.
And he's looking at me going,
no, no, no.
He's like shaking his head.
I was like,
oh, he's not taken.
And he's like shaking his head.
And then he's like,
just for me to hand the mic to him.
He's like, my wife passed away six months ago.
Oh.
And that really took the wind out of the sails.
And so I'm like, as the consummate professional,
I've got to keep the show rolling.
So I'm like, well, he's not taken.
So that means he's available.
No. No, no.
And there's not much coming back from that, you know?
No.
How was I to know, though?
You just keep.
Yeah.
Maybe you have like a name badge or something.
Just with what's happened in your life over the last six months.
The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast.
Your chance to get in for the boarding call.
The Hits boarding call with Visit Anaheim, House of Travel and Fiji Airways.
That is an amazing trip, Anaheim, Disneyland.
It would be incredible.
You want to be there.
Thanks to House of Travel, Fiji Airways and Visit Anaheim.
Well, yeah, let's get Stella on from Taranaki.
Morena, Stella.
Good morning.
How are you guys?
Yeah, we're doing well, mate.
You got one simple question to answer, then you could be off seeing Mickey Mouse.
Did you know Mickey Mouse has multiple aliases around the world?
He's known as Moose Pig in Sweden, Me, Lao, Shu in China and Topolino in Italy.
More aliases than men boys on Tinder.
I did not know that. All Alright, here's your question.
How many years did it take to build
Disneyland?
I do know this.
Wasn't it like one year
and one day? It was 12 months
from when they started to when they opened.
Well done. You are in the draw for that amazing
trip of a lifetime.
And I was also going to say, while I'm on,
I can be your last person for the Black
Ferns Connect Four. Oh, do you have a connection?
We tried to
tenuously tie in people to the Black Ferns.
What's your connection?
So my granddad was the first ever Black
Ferns coach and
they played for the O'Reilly
Cup in his memory. Oh,
that's lovely. Jeez. And
Ruby Toohey said in a post-match interview, you know, this isn't just our team who's done
this.
This is all the teams who have gone before us who have paved the way.
Definitely.
And so my mum was black to her number 44, and I can definitely say that they all go
on this journey with them.
And we're so proud of the girls and what they've done for the sport.
And yeah, it's so awesome to see.
Wow, very special for you and your family.
Congratulations.
Yeah, thank you so much.
You have a great day and all the very best for that trip of a lifetime
to Anaheim, Disneyland.
Listen out for the next Hits Sporting Call.
It's Jono and Ben.
The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast.
Weekend of sport.
Of course, the greatest moment of the weekend,
the Black Ferns winning the World Cup.
Such an amazing moment in front of 42,000 people at Eden Park.
Something else that's incredible is I've found out that you,
behind the scenes, have organised a little family getaway.
A family getaway, but not one that you're paying for.
No.
One that you've got on the company dollar.
Well...
The hits dollar.
No, it's, you know, because it's not...
Shady backroom deals.
I'm a big fan of cricket.
And they came to it and they were like, hey, would you and the family like to go down to the Hot Springs T20 Black Clash?
In association with Heartland.
It's returning.
Is this a natural conversation?
It's returning 2023.
It is.
And I'm like, will you tell me more?
Where is it returning?
And they're like, well, it's Christchurch.
I'm like, yeah, I'll be there.
And so the trippers, family of four, two kids, two adults, flights, petrol vouchers, accommodations.
Yeah, you had it all.
To the hit zone.
You had it all.
Planting on the haven, you name it.
I'm like, yes, yes, and more yes.
Well, I'm like, no, no, and more no.
But you can't just go off on a free trip without me, buddy.
Why not?
So that's why I'm giving the fine audience a chance
to win your trip to the Hot Springs Spa 2020.
Ben has a family trip booked to the Hot Springs Spa T20 Black Clash.
Jono wants to give it away.
It's Jono and Ben's hit him for six.
Now what's going to happen is over the next five days,
you've been such a big fan of cricket that you should know all of the players.
So what I'm going to do is give you a chance to ask a mystery player
six questions to try and figure out who they are.
If you miss one day out of the five this week, I'm giving away the trip to the next quarter on
0800THEHITS. Well, these are called yes or no questions, right? Yes or no questions,
and we'll welcome the first player joining us right now. Good morning. Good morning. Good
morning. Sounds busy. Where are you at the moment? Always busy. It's hustle and bustle at the office. It's all action, all go.
He hasn't given us much.
It's just at the office.
Okay.
Hustle and bustle at the office.
All right, I've got six questions, yes or no questions,
to try and guess who this is.
Yeah.
Okay.
First question, are you in team rugby?
No.
No.
Okay, so you're in team cricket.
Okay.
Are you a batter?
We all bat.
They all bat.
They all bat.
That's true.
It's part of the structure of the game.
Yeah, but would you be more...
Hopefully not required.
Hopefully not.
Okay, so we're thinking more of a bowler.
Okay, looking at the team list here.
Do you bowl spin bowling?
No.
Fast-paced or medium?
Yeah, fast-paced.
That's simple.
So that's question three.
Okay.
Oh, do you share the name with the lead singer of Coldplay?
No, I do not.
Not Chris Martin.
I'm definitely not Chris Martin.
It's not Chris Martin from Coldplay or the Cricket.
I'm thinking, I'm looking at the other bowlers in this team.
I'm going to lock it.
Are you Kyle Mills?
Welcome to the party.
Yes!
Kyle Mills!
With a ball to spare.
With a ball to spare.
Kyle Mills, nice to talk to you.
Millsy, K-Dog.
How are you? I'm very well, boys. How are you going spear. Kyle Mills, nice to talk to you. Millsy K-Dog. How are you?
I'm very well, boys.
How are you going?
Good.
It's nice to talk to you.
Big fan of yours, Kyle Mills.
How's things?
Very good.
Very good.
So, yeah, early days, getting ready for the Black Clash mode, really.
Sort of starting to get a bit more communication about it.
So, starting to switch into gear.
Have there been no comms up until this point?
No comms since the last game.
The last week or so, it's just upped a little bit.
You start to feel a little bit more pressure because it's two all now.
It's very tight.
And the rugby boys tend to get a little bit cocky because, you know, we possibly should win.
But they did the damage to us last year at the Mount, which was an awesome event.
It was an awesome event.
Hey, let's pull no punches here.
You guys are all pretending this is a serious match.
It's a giant bender.
It's a giant bender for all of you,
disguised as a cricket game.
I must admit, at the Mount last year in the second inning,
I had to question myself whether this was a cricket match or not.
The crowd was going absolutely berserk. And they do a good job, and it was a cricket match or not. The crowd was going absolutely berserk.
And they do a good job, and it was a good time down there.
So now it's Christchurch's time, you know,
to live up to the expectations of having a good time.
Kyle, well, thank you very much for coming on.
Can't wait for the event.
And hopefully you'll see Ben there if he guesses
the remaining four players in the Black Clash throughout the week.
You go and have a great day, mate.
Yeah, mate, get on down, guys, because it is, all honesty,
it's a great event and you'll have a good time.
Well, I'm trying to get there, but my trip might be taken off me.
All the details for the Black Clash are at the hits.co.nz.
