Starting point is 00:00:00 Thanks to Challenge Petrol Service Stations, this John Owen Bean podcast brought to you by Challenge Petrol Service Stations. Challenge! Why don't you challenge the norm? You've made up, you keep making up slogans for the best fun, I'm sure they appreciate it. So, thank you for coming on board for the podcast. Yeah, it's great. We were just actually Talking about podcasts Weren't we In the world The competitive world Of podcasting nowadays Ben Boyce
Starting point is 00:00:29 And actually producer Joel You dip your toes Into a basketball podcast Every week How's that going Oh we do it John's number one Is it
Starting point is 00:00:36 I saw another thing Someone else had a number one Podcast Well they're lying mate It depends on what time Have you released I mean you know So everyone's at number one
Starting point is 00:00:43 At some point Yeah You just need to strike At that goal Not John and Ben Depends on what time you're released. I mean, you know. So everyone's at number one at some point. Yeah, yeah. You just need to strike at that golden hour. Not John O'Byrne. We're not number one anywhere. We've been teetering around sort of 125 on these charts. A lot of people do listen to it, though, which is awesome.
Starting point is 00:00:58 We get a lot of messages through, and we're saying we're giving shout-outs now to people that DM us on Instagram at The Hits Breakfast or send a message on 4487. Yeah. Leonie, who we shouted out to yesterday. She gave us great – I mean, we've had two days of amazing stuff on the radio, all thanks to what she offered. Yeah, thank you. A gift to me.
Starting point is 00:01:16 Thank you, Leonie. Jono, you'll hear it again. We reflect on it again today. You'll hear it on the podcast. Something happened poolside at a hotel, and I was – you just think you're in your own privacy don't you not not publicly by a pool but but like i'd imagine if you were sitting in the bathroom or something and this happened yeah absolutely but no or on the step outside your house if you don't know what i'm talking about i was cutting my toenails beside a pool it made it sound A lot worse actually And I just
Starting point is 00:01:45 I told you I was like What's the People have to cut Their toenails But not by the Bar What's the deal
Starting point is 00:01:51 Why does it make it So grotesque Doing it in public In public It's just not So what if I was Cutting my fingernails It's slightly better
Starting point is 00:01:59 But still no So just no nail cutting Happening in front of strangers Is that what you're saying In a public setting By a pool. I mean, imagine that. We've got a meeting, a company-wide meeting,
Starting point is 00:02:08 and an old mate pulls out his feet and starts clapping his toenails. Imagine that. I'm not doing it. I'm not doing it in a boardroom. But you're doing it in a public, by the pool. Well, my feet are out of the pool. Well, people are out with it. I could see my feet more.
Starting point is 00:02:25 And I was like, you know, when you're in a border, you've got your shoes covered. So I'm not going to start cutting my claws there. But anyway, so apparently you're not allowed to do that in public. Any shout outs there, Joel? You know, there was someone that invited us to the graduation, the biggest theology graduation in the world. 100,000 people graduated. 100,000? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:42 It was in November, though. So we might have. It was on Zoom, but yeah, we missed that. It was in November. Yeah, it's a shame when you check the DMs and you're not over them and you're like,
Starting point is 00:02:49 I checked one from you, it was how many years past it? Five years. Yeah, and it was a video message you asked me to do and I'm sorry I missed that message. There's actually one here, it could be big for you, Ben.
Starting point is 00:03:00 They're trying to get us to promote their alcohol brand for festive season. Oh, yeah. What's the alcohol brand? Do you want me to say it yeah uh rinse vodka soda it's actually a really good and quite reputable vodka soda brand unreputable ones yeah sometimes we do talk about a lot of unreputable uh things you've got some bootleg stuff guys yeah okay let's all play a game let's check our dms because i never check i'm shocking on social media check our ds and read the first message that pops up. I've got one here from Susanna Gillies.
Starting point is 00:03:34 Hi, is this genuine with a link? Okay, this is dangerous. Don't click on that link. I'm going to click on it. Oh, yeah, no, it's me saying that Susanna's won $100. All she needs to do is contact me. Yes, it is. It is genuine, Susanna.
Starting point is 00:03:50 Please, your credit card details and your three-digit pin on the back. And we will deposit that money at Jono Prior Enterprises into your account. Oh, I've got one from Joel Harrison. I sent you a funny video. What was it? The guy getting crushed by a tree. I'm watching it. Did that just go to your request?
Starting point is 00:04:10 Yeah, I'm watching it. At least you don't follow me, John. That's probably why. I don't follow you. Oh, no, I don't. There you go. I'll follow you, John. Oh, there you go.
Starting point is 00:04:18 You've got a nice one. Can I just say, a video of a guy getting crushed by a tree. Yeah. Hilarious. No part of that The best thing If you like it You get all of them on your algorithm as well
Starting point is 00:04:28 So just Give it a like Share it around to a few people But yeah No it's Sorry I haven't really got anything I've also I've also seen on here
Starting point is 00:04:35 I've sent a lot of famous people messages On my Do you want to Do you want to talk Who I've sent a message to Oh you Yeah Okay
Starting point is 00:04:43 Let's go through The famous people you've sent messages to Israel Adesanya Same here I've sent a message to. Oh, yeah. Okay. Let's go through the famous people you've sent messages to. Israel Adesanya. Same here. I've sent Israel Adesanya four messages. Four messages. You DM him? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:53 Oh, okay. Oh, no, he doesn't follow me. No, no, that's what I mean. But, yeah, so you DM him. Yeah. Okay, you don't just comment below, this is a private. I said this is before his last fight that he had a few weeks ago. Good luck luck champ.
Starting point is 00:05:05 You make us proud. Oh that's nice. The good luck champ sounded a bit condescending but the make us proud sounded lovely. But he's the champion. Oh he is. He is. You wouldn't lose whatever he is. He is a champion. I love him. The day after the fight I said proud of you mate. You're a legend. Keep up the good work.
Starting point is 00:05:22 So that was pre and post fight. He's awesome. Famous person you've DM'd there, Producer Joel? I actually DM'd Israel Adesanya on the 22nd of July 2018. This is a while back. I said, happy birthday, mate. Can't wait to see you at the top of the game. Keep killing it, brother. True story. 2018.
Starting point is 00:05:38 Didn't get back? No, no, didn't. No, well, he's busy. I mean, he's got millions of followers. This is before he was a champ. I think I might have predicted something big here. And if they're not following you back Unfortunately it slips into the section That they don't see They have to You know it's a bit of admin
Starting point is 00:05:50 To go out and Yes Another one here To Stacey Flula Who was the In the Black Ferns Black Ferns yeah She said congrats legend
Starting point is 00:05:58 A lot of mine are just Congratulations Legend Congrats legend You make us all so proud I basically I am just like Copy paste.
Starting point is 00:06:06 Ruby Tooey, mate, so happy for you and the team. You're a bloody legend. You make us so proud. They don't reply to you. No, again, they're probably getting a lot of messages, but essentially my messages are just of the tone of a very proud parent. And the kids don't text me back. Yeah, well, that's lovely, though.
Starting point is 00:06:23 There are lots of people making you proud today. I did the same thing you mocked me for with KJ Arpa a few years ago. Got home, watched. I had a few drinks, but I got home, watched some Riverdale, and I was like, jeez, he's good in this, like a Kiwi actor. He's really good. I'm going to DM him, probably along the same lines, like, good on you, champ.
Starting point is 00:06:40 You make us proud or whatever it was. It was along those lines, yeah. Nothing bad. That's fine. But you brought it up whatever it was. It was along those lines. Yeah. Nothing bad. That's fine. But you brought it up the next time we talked to him on radio going, yeah. And he still gave you that. He still didn't message you back, did he? Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:06:52 He waved through again. He's millions of followers. That's the thing. You know, he's not going to wade back through looking for his good luck champ sort of message from me. So, yeah. So, yeah. But lovely thing you're doing. That's lovely.
Starting point is 00:07:02 You've just got to wish. You've got to be positive on social media. I did that on Twitter for a while. I tried to turn the tide of Twitter because I found Twitter a very negative spot and I was like, hey, I'm going to do a year of positive tweets. Every day I'm going to tweet about someone that I think is awesome. Publicly, like, same thing you're doing.
Starting point is 00:07:17 I'm like, Israel Adesanya. I'm like, if it was someone like that, I'd tag him in going, he's awesome. Proud of you. Proud of you. And I did that for a while. People would even start bullying me for that as well. You got mocked out of doing a positive thing.
Starting point is 00:07:29 Everyone's like, who's going to be you? I was like, mate, I'm just trying to turn that in. But to be fair, Ben, why did you think you, Ben Boyce, would turn the tide on the tone of Twitter? It wasn't probably turn the tide. It was just to be a small little beacon, a ray of sunshine in an otherwise bleak environment. That's right. You got mocked and bullied out of it.
Starting point is 00:07:51 You didn't even get past two months, did you? No, people were like, oh, yeah, oh, yeah. Oh, you've done such and such. Oh, you're thinking of the daily thing. People around the office, man, he faced the face bullying about it, too. I was like, oh, I'll retire. I tell you, I know you made no impact on Twitter. I tell you who does, though. Elon Musk. He's making some stuff. He's making waves at Twitter, mate. I don like, oh, I'll retire. I tell you, you made no impact on Twitter. I tell you who does though,
Starting point is 00:08:05 Elon Musk. He's making some stuff. He's making waves at Twitter, mate. I don't know if I'm coming back. All right, enjoy the podcast. The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast.
Starting point is 00:08:14 It's going to be a big weekend. There's everything going on. There's concerts, Christmas in the park, the World Cup football, quarterfinals happening on TV as well. But last night, you know,
Starting point is 00:08:23 everyone wanted to watch the Harry and Meghan doco. It started on Netflix. We're going to fill you in with some of the big highlights in about 10 minutes time from what was there because I understand
Starting point is 00:08:31 it was late last night. It dropped. Some people might not have seen it. So we'll fill you in. We all watched it. We were all like, we'll watch it. And,
Starting point is 00:08:38 whoo-wee, Sleepy Jono. Oh yeah, I was going to say, how many, five minutes into that, you would have been there. I stuck with it for about ten, then my head
Starting point is 00:08:46 started doing the nod, and Jen's like, have they lost you? My wife, she's like, have they lost you already? And then I had to regroup this morning with the remainder of it. But yeah, we'll bring it up to speed. It will be, but last night, because my wife, I was very excited about, you know, well, very interested to watch
Starting point is 00:09:02 it, and so my wife and I, we're going to watch it, but of course, I've been bringing you up to date with my credit card saga, how both my wife and my credit cards were basically hacked. Both of them? Yeah, yeah. I didn't realise hers was as well. So yeah, so we're both waiting on replacement credit cards. So that means that...
Starting point is 00:09:15 I'm sorry, the numbers were there on your screen at work. I just thought, well, here's a low-hanging fruit. So we don't have a credit card. So that means that you get these little emails popping up throughout the week where you're waiting for credit cards going uh this payment's overdue we've now held this this is spent so netflix netflix is gone you know because we haven't been able to pay our bill throughout the last week but then a couple of months ago i was in the bank with my daughter sienna just doing something for myself and she was sort of going hey could i get a debit card next year because i'm going to a new school maybe you could allocate some money from time to time to put in
Starting point is 00:09:48 so i don't have to have cash if i'm going to get something for lunch i'm like this seems like a great idea what a conversation these are conversations 12 year olds are having nowadays yeah i think it's time i get a debit card so i was in the back oh yeah that seems that all seems very reasonable to me we're in the bank right now the guy's like yeah we can get that all seems very reasonable to me. We're in the bank right now. The guy's like, yeah, we can get that all sorted. I was like, great. Get home and my wife's like, these are the conversations we should be having together as a parent. It just felt like a debit card is quite a big,
Starting point is 00:10:14 it's a pivotal moment in a child's life. Yeah, and I was like, but it all seemed like a good idea at the time. She put a good case forward. The bank guy was keen. Yeah, of course the bank guy was into it. But then last night when we didn't have a credit card for netflix hey who had a credit card in the house and i was like to amanda i was like oh there you go hey we get to watch because of the decision i made a couple of months ago we could watch megan and harry on netflix Netflix. Who came home to a spicy environment in July?
Starting point is 00:10:46 But who can watch the doco now because of a decision that I made? Was it praised upon you? No, not really. It was one of those things like, don't bring it up now, mate. But you want to revel in it. Because those moments do not happen. As a husband, you don't get to enjoy those moments often. And when they come up, no one gives them enough attention.
Starting point is 00:11:04 So Ben, well done. I'll give you the praise you deserve. Great decision, getting your daughter a credit card. I don't know if it was, actually. When I came home to the conversation, I was like, oh, maybe this way. Anyway, she's got it now and it paid off last night. Yesterday when you said you were in the vape store with her
Starting point is 00:11:18 and she's like, I should take up vaping. And I was like, oh, I don't know, but maybe it'll pay off next year. No, that didn't happen. The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast. Now, one thing that I've always said, Ben, I don't know, but maybe it'll pay off next year. No, that didn't happen. Now, one thing that I've always said, Ben, this show is lacking. Rural news, you know? The rural sector, it's the backbone of this country. It is.
Starting point is 00:11:35 It's the backbone of this radio show. Well, it hasn't been, but it will be from now on. Oh, no, we had a lot of fun at Field Days the other day. We went there as well. We've been to the rural games before. And actually, this next guest who's joining us, we've actually hung out with him at both those occasions. and uh manua too he took us uh milking uh tangaroa walkers his name and uh we milked some cows with him and he squirted milk all over my all over my face straight from the cows udder it was strangely erotic i didn't
Starting point is 00:12:00 know what was what was happening uh it was doing things to me and it being it weeded you out although you got a little bit in your face as well. But he's a wonderful representative for the dairy farming community. He's become a social media superstar for posting his videos farming here in New Zealand and around the world.
Starting point is 00:12:17 A huge following. Yeah, he does. Sunday afternoon, 3 o'clock, TVNZ1 with Ali Pugh. He's hosting the New Zealand Agriculture Show. Tangaroa, good morning. How are you? Good. How are you? Yeah, good, buddy.
Starting point is 00:12:28 Nice to talk to you. Likewise. Likewise. Now, Tangaroa, you do some wonderful stuff for farming across New Zealand, particularly dairy farming as well and recruiting people who would otherwise maybe not consider it as a vocation. And you're back on telly this weekend, mate. Yeah, look, we just shot the NZ Ag Show,
Starting point is 00:12:47 myself and Ali. We hosted the show second year running, but this time we had people at the show. Last year we shot it during COVID, so this year it was good to see. I think we had about 115,000 people come to the front gate. That's awesome. So that was in Christchurch recently?
Starting point is 00:13:04 That's the one, yep. I think it's one of the oldest, it's the oldest A&P show in New Zealand, if not the Southern Hemisphere. They're very old, a lot of history there. Now you, because you go around to a lot of these things and you're a wonderful representative for the industry but you must be stressing out every time
Starting point is 00:13:20 you're away that your farm's getting out of hand. Yeah. 100%. You know, all eyes are on my farm, obviously, with my social media platform. I've got a lead by example, and sometimes I'm not here, but fortunately I've got two awesome leaders who
Starting point is 00:13:35 I work with, and they make sure that nothing goes missing when I'm away, so it's awesome. Now, the New Zealand Agricultural Show, it's going to be on this Sunday, 3pm on TVNZ1. You've met some amazing people by the looks of it for the show. Who's one off the top of your head that stands out? For me personally, one of the awesome things
Starting point is 00:13:56 is finding out that former racehorses are helping put lives back together again. So some kids might be struggling with a few issues and they're sort of reusing horses or professional athletes, being the horse, to get out and meet these kids. And, yeah, it's just a really cool connection with the kids and the horses. Oh, awesome. Do you know what?
Starting point is 00:14:19 I was playing a little game at field days and I'd walk up to people and go, you'll be voting for Cindy next year. I was playing a little game at field days, and I'd walk up to people and go, you'll be voting for Cindy next year. And it got a range of responses, Tangaroa. A different time. Did you play that game at the agriculture show? You'll be voting for Cindy next year. Yeah, unfortunately, I probably would have been kicked out, mate.
Starting point is 00:14:42 I'd go on it, to be honest. Well, listen, you keep up the good work, mate, everybody. One of the great people of this country, Tangaroa. And this Sunday afternoon, you can catch it, the agriculture show, Ali Piu. Wonderful Ali Piu and Tangaroa Walker are going to be hosting that. Good to hear from you, mate. Awesome.
Starting point is 00:14:58 Good to see you guys again. Now, what's something else we love here in New Zealand, we talk about quite a lot, is we love famous people saying favourable things about New Zealand. Yeah, we were hoping one day to create some sort of collage or a montage of all the times, you know, Tom Cruise has come here, Ed Sheeran's come here, Bieber's come here, and they've all said, yeah, that's a really, it's a beautiful country, oh, I'd love to live there one day, all that sort of stuff,
Starting point is 00:15:24 playing into our sweet spot. Now, Avatar, the new movies have been filmed in new zealand uh it's out before christmas and kate winslet you know her you know obviously titanic many other movies but she is an avatar guess what guess what but please tell me she said some stuff about new zealand oh good she's favorable playing beautifully into my insecurities. Yeah. Have a listen. This is Kate Winslet from Hollywood, the actor, talking about our country. I mean, I love New Zealand. I love New Zealanders.
Starting point is 00:15:54 I love the country. I actually have family there. It's just there's a sort of, I don't know, there's a sense of fun. There's a sense of togetherness. There's a, I don't know, there's a sense of fun, there's a sense of togetherness, there's a spirit to New Zealand that's really hard to describe. It's really embedded in nature and I think the respect for the country and the landscape that you can see that people really love it and appreciate it and want to look after it. And that's a really important thing. Oh my God, is that the best one yet? That could be the best. The best one.
Starting point is 00:16:27 Can we just play the beginning three seconds of that? Yeah. I mean, I love New Zealand. I love New Zealanders. I love New Zealanders. I love New Zealanders. Tourism New Zealanders. Everything you want.
Starting point is 00:16:37 You're right. That's the best answer to that question as well. It's all a small island nation can hope for at the end of the world. My sister lives up north around Russell, you know, up in the Bay of Islands. There's a lot of chatter about her. Maybe it was while she was here, but she went to one of the restaurants up there. Up there. Oh, Kate Winslet was there, you know.
Starting point is 00:16:54 So that was, yeah. So maybe that's why she was in the country. So she got to enjoy the... Well, yeah. They all come here and they say, jeez, it's the most beautiful place. Yeah, because you're probably staying in $10,000 a night luxury resorts while the rest of us are battling away. But let's not pretend.
Starting point is 00:17:10 It's all like that. Put on the good show. Bring out the good China for the celebrities. The rest of us are stuck on the bloody Southern Motorway for three hours a day. The Hits,
Starting point is 00:17:19 the Jono and Ben podcast. Now, Harry and Megan, the whole world's talking about that, the Netflix doco. That's six episodes. The first three dropped on Netflix last night, about nine o'clock last night. Yeah, now we all were invested in it.
Starting point is 00:17:31 We were like, okay, we're going to do a three-pronged velociraptor attack. We didn't really plan it that well, though, because we all should have taken an episode, or me and B-Hump should have taken an episode and half each. Jono would have watched 10 minutes and fallen asleep. We knew that was going to happen. But you picked up something this morning as well.
Starting point is 00:17:47 I did. But if you want my honest opinion, it felt like I'd gone over to a couple's house and they were regaling me with the world's most boring tale about how they met. I found it really fascinating. I'm not a royalist, but I found it quite fascinating. Yeah, they lost me. Oh, really?
Starting point is 00:18:05 Yeah. And it felt like it was a documentary set up and edited and everything was directed and all the content and the direction of the documentary is done by them. Which is fair enough. Yeah, which is fair enough. It's the chance for them to tell their story. It's like an autobiography. You get to tell the side of the story.
Starting point is 00:18:22 I found the relationship side of things. Lots of cute, you know, lots of footage, lots of footage from phones, from them behind the scenes. And them talking about their, I don't know, they were explaining how they met. But meeting over Instagram I found quite interesting. First time Harry ever laid eyes on her was over Instagram.
Starting point is 00:18:38 And it was, she had the dog, the dog, the Snapchat, you know, the filter with the dog face on Instagram. I was scrolling through my feed and uh someone who was a friend had this video of the two of them's like a snapchat oh gosh isn't that whole thing it started like dog ears that's what he saw of me yeah so they met on instagram first date harry was late i thought it was interesting as well. And the fact that after only going on two dates, they went to Africa, stayed in a tent
Starting point is 00:19:09 with no bathrooms and whatever for a week. I thought that was very much a real test of whether a relationship was going to blossom or not. That's really ramping it up, isn't it?
Starting point is 00:19:16 From a restaurant to, do you want to come to Africa and, you know, defecate in the desert next to a lion? Yeah. There was elephants all roaming around and stuff as well.
Starting point is 00:19:26 Yeah. But the scrutiny was probably the big thing for me. The fact you're living under that microscope. And he's lived since he was little. Obviously the horrible, horrible stuff that happened with the worst case scenario with his mum, sadly passing away. That was, yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:39 And I said I was completely bored out of my brains. Maybe the relationship part of it bored me. But the stories about him being sort of paraded out as a four-year-old or five-year-old and having to really try and get his head around understanding who are these hundreds of people taking photos of me he they were on a um ski trip i think and prince william was having to prince william was probably only seven or so guiding out him and Eugenie and Beatrice to come out and sort of parade themselves in front of the media.
Starting point is 00:20:07 Yeah, and Harry was saying that they did that spot with her in front of the paparazzi, hoping, you know, the understanding that that was going to be it. They could have some family time after that on the ski slopes, but it didn't happen. And there was a moment where Princess Diana came up and she accosted a paparazzi who was filming their family. As a parent, could I ask you to respect my children's space?
Starting point is 00:20:32 Yes, certainly. Yes. That's probably the tool. Because I brought the children out here for a holiday. Right. And we'd really appreciate the space. I understand that. And I'm sure as a... It wouldn would be possible to just get a picture of
Starting point is 00:20:45 no afternoon and then we can totally leave you alone just like you just do that and i'll leave you alone no we've had 15 cameras following us today i haven't been one of those no but as a parent i want to protect children yeah you can see yeah you can see how pushy they are as well he's like we just want a photo of you. But that's what everyone, the whole world. Yeah, so I really, you know, like I can see the understanding. You know, I can see why Harry and Meghan have left the rule, you know, that limelight, that micro soap. You know, it would be horrible.
Starting point is 00:21:15 Yeah, well, you do want to leave that micro soap, Ben. Oh, sorry. Yeah, you do. If you're under that, that soap. Yeah, sorry. Microscope is what I meant to say. And he was always worried about, too, finding a partner because he was like, everyone I would date,
Starting point is 00:21:30 within a week or so, they were at the centre of a paparazzi storm. And then they were like, oh, this is too much. I've got to move on. So he was like, am I just going to be single? Who can I actually bring into this world who will be able to cope with the microscope? Yeah, the microscope. I mean, you lose all your your privacy you
Starting point is 00:21:46 just be like a horrible horrible existence yeah so i did i did feel very sorry for him on that part we'll have more throughout the morning as well as laura mcgoldrick who is a fanatical royal fan and her thoughts on megan not great yeah no she she's probably the president of the megan markle hate club isn't she did last night's stock go change your mind? We'll find out this morning after eight on The Hits. The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast. Last night, Guns N' Roses, GNR in Wellington. Saturday night, Auckland to Eden Park.
Starting point is 00:22:18 Epic, epic to have them back in the country, right? Yeah, they are a wonderful band, Gus. They've got some great songs, don't they? I'm surprised they're still all here. They're still all functioning as human beings, just given the life that they've led. And I went to see, I saw them actually last time they came, and Axl Rose, obviously you get older.
Starting point is 00:22:38 Look at me. You know what I'm trying to say. And after every song, he was going off stage, and everyone was going, where's he going? But then I found out after the show, he was going off stage And everyone was going Where's he going But then I found out After the show He was going off stage Huffing on oxygen Oh I imagine
Starting point is 00:22:49 Some of the vocals He has to do Is pretty incredible Oh take it out of your bed Take it out Actually in between Every voice back We do on the radio
Starting point is 00:22:57 During the songs I'm huffing on oxygen What a life support machine Right now My wife we did that same one as well Her mum loves Guns N' Roses You know I'm a huge fan That's her,
Starting point is 00:23:05 like her song, she's like at my funeral. She wants November Rain to be the song. Joyce does. Yeah, Joyce, you know,
Starting point is 00:23:10 I've seen her before. She's quite petite. But she was up on people's shoulders. She was having the time of her life. November Rain is a lot, it's a long one for a funeral,
Starting point is 00:23:19 about eight minutes 43, isn't it? Yeah, it is. But that's what she's asked. She put her request in for. Well, there'll be a lot of reflecting about joyce when november 8 is uh but guns and roses actually uh just dealing with a bit of a trademark infringement lawsuit at the moment
Starting point is 00:23:33 because there's a texas shop called texas guns and roses and guess what they sell guns and roses yeah they've got a it's a flor, and also if you want to buy firearms, you can also buy both as well. And Guns N' Roses have said, hey, you've also, fair enough, you've breached our name, Guns N' Roses, and also we kind of don't want to be associated with a shop that's selling guns with roses, you know? So you can say, I love you, and shoot someone at the same time.
Starting point is 00:24:03 There's not enough shops providing that service, are there? So Guns N' Roses, enjoy it if you're heading on there Saturday night. The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast. Out of that new tribe, baby, the further you fall Even with all the money in the whole wide world Please, please, please don't pass Please, please, please don't pass It is Jack Johnson Flake. He is in New Zealand playing Saturday night at Western Springs in Auckland. Sunday night at Church Road Winery in Napier.
Starting point is 00:24:39 There's still some tickets available at ticketmaster.co.nz. Can't wait to see him. He's awesome. Yeah, and I hope he surfed all the way over here, Jack Johnson. We caught up with him very recently, and you asked him, every time he comes to New Zealand, what does he do? I mean, it's hard to say to so many. It's just when we're there, the last time around,
Starting point is 00:24:55 we got to do a nice camping trip. We have friends kind of all around the country from the surfing world and just from music and whatnot. So I would love just to see all our good old friends. So I miss a lot of them. Getting in the ocean is always fun. It's always a little cold. I got to acclimate again,
Starting point is 00:25:10 but the waves are good enough that it's worth it. I should know the proper name for it, but the hot water beach where we dug a hole and we got to sit in like a little boiling hot tub on the beach. I think we call it hot water beach. We sure, yeah. We're not very inventive with some of our names sometimes. North Island, South Island, things like that, you know.
Starting point is 00:25:26 I got it right. And I heard in New Plymouth last time you played there, everyone went a bit crazy and ended up in the duck pond. Oh, yeah, yeah, that was fun. My favorite part of that is my good friend who's actually on tour with us, one of my best old friends. He's our promoter down there. So he was the one who had to get on the microphone
Starting point is 00:25:45 and tell everybody to get out of the pond, you know? And then everybody started getting back into the pond again and I would just look over at him and he would kind of raise his eyebrows, like hoping that maybe I would say something. I would just shake my head. I was like, I'm trying to act cool up here, man. I'm going to make you be that guy
Starting point is 00:25:59 that has to get everybody out of the pond. And he'd have to be the bad guy again. Yeah, you're like, I'm not doing the public service announcements, man. He's on star here i leave all the psas to him yeah i've seen that duck pond before it looks toxic yeah it's not a good idea to get in the duck pond to begin with you know what i mean now you say it now you'll say it no i won't say it you've got uh you've got teenage kids from what we understand, and they were very stoked. One of them was stoked that one of your songs blew up on TikTok the other day.
Starting point is 00:26:29 Is it kind of weird that, you know, having your kids find your music and be impressed that way? I don't know if he was stoked. It was kind of like, you know how teenagers are. It's always hard to tell if they're stoked or not, but he informed me. He kind of just, at breakfast time, as if it was anything else, was like, oh, Dad, one of your songs is viral on TikTok.
Starting point is 00:26:49 And I'm not sure if he was stoked or disappointed in his father. Hard to read, aren't they, the disgruntled teenagers? Yeah. Do they think you're cool? Surely they think you're cool. I think they do think I'm cool, but not in the way of, like, how we all define the word cool. But I think they think I'm a hangable not in the way of like how we all define the word cool but i think i think they think i'm a i'm a hangable dad like they like hanging out with me
Starting point is 00:27:08 but they also like quite often like pointing out how dorky i am or like they think it's pretty funny that uh that i can gather a crowd of like 10 000 people in one place you know they just to them i'm just a dorky normal dad who kind of hangs out with them and we surf we jam music around the house and whatnot and then when i go on tour and they see it actually happening they're like wait that's not just something you tell us you can do you can actually people show up you know it's like my dad my dad plays the guitar and sings not to the level of you but he enjoys it but i knew as a kid whenever he brought out the guitar and you're at someone's place it was like oh we're sleeping the night on the couch here because he's going to be playing at 2 or 3 in the morning.
Starting point is 00:27:45 Is it the same with your kids? You bring in the guitar and you're like, oh, here he goes again. Jack's got his guitar out. That's really funny. Yeah, you know, and I make my kids sleep in a lot of weird places, not only for that reason, but just when we're on tour sometimes. And kind of your question earlier, you're catching up with old friends. They were in New Zealand and we're out to dinner
Starting point is 00:28:03 and we're having a few drinks or something, and you don't want the night to end when they're real little i would kind of just tell maybe i'm tired and i would say all right there's a good spot under the table there you know whatever it's so like that sounds horrible i don't always mean it's what you're having a drink but it's just more about when the times are fun we kind of make home wherever we are that night you know and they just don't find a good place to crash. You know, and if you're sleeping under the table
Starting point is 00:28:26 of a restaurant, so good. It's not in the bar very often. Thank you, Jack Johnson, for your time this morning. Can't wait to catch up
Starting point is 00:28:34 with you when you're here. Yeah, hopefully we can meet up when I'm down there. The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast. We want to know this weekend, who's going to have
Starting point is 00:28:42 the best weekend because there's a lot of stuff on. Everyone's watching the weather. The weather is a little bit dodgy because Guns N' Roses, they're know this weekend, who's going to have the best weekend? Because there's a lot of stuff on. Everyone's watching the weather. The weather is a little bit dodgy. Because Guns N' Roses, they're here this weekend. Last night they played in Wellington. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:52 And as that news story came out that they were in Wellington, remember we did Mums N' Roses? That's right. And we formed a group of mums and they were a Guns N' Roses cover band. I was like, we should have done Mums N' Roses again. We should have put Mums N' Roses out before Guns N' Roses this. Family-friendly Guns N' Roses. Everything's wrapped was like, we should have done Mums N' Roses again. We should have put Mums N' Roses out before Guns N' Roses. Family friendly Guns N' Roses.
Starting point is 00:29:07 Everything's wrapped up by 9.30. The kids are in bed. It's Saturday night Eden Park, Guns N' Roses which will be lots of fun. Christmas in the Park
Starting point is 00:29:14 on this weekend as well. Also Jack Johnson Jack Johnson in Auckland on Saturday night and in Napier over the weekend as well. I love Jack Johnson. I'm going along with the family.
Starting point is 00:29:26 Looking forward to that. Well, you say you're going along with the family. It's meant to be your anniversary date night. Yeah, well. It's just turned into another night with the family, which is a bit of a bone of contention. It is a wee bit, but anyway, it's going to be fun. So I'm looking forward to my weekend.
Starting point is 00:29:37 Do you know, last time we did speak to Jack Johnson, I don't know if you've noticed this, and it's happened about six times throughout our career, Ben, where the superstar that you're interviewing wraps up the interview with something along the lines in the ballpark of, love to catch up when I'm down there. Because often we talk to them before they come to New Zealand
Starting point is 00:29:56 to help promote their show, whatever you write, and then sometimes we're like, we'll catch up when we're in the country. Sometimes we initiate it. Yeah, but it's been a sentence that's happened a few times throughout the career, and it feels like, you know, when you see maybe an old schoolmate in the supermarket, you have no other way to wrap up the conversation, so you go, well, hey, we'll catch up soon.
Starting point is 00:30:14 Did Jack Johnson say that to us today? Again, you might have initiated it, but have a listen. It's going to be awesome. We'll hope to catch you soon when you're in town as well. Yeah, hopefully we can meet up when I'm down there, hopefully we can meet up when I'm down there. Hopefully we can meet up when I'm down there. Now, my question is, what's going to happen if we meet up? Like, I feel like we would just turn it into an interview.
Starting point is 00:30:34 Yeah. A hangout. We wouldn't be, you know. How do we do it? Should we maybe book a restaurant tonight somewhere and let Jack know that we're going to be here at 8 o'clock, book the table, come down and see us, that sort of thing? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:45 Like, rather than, yeah. Or maybe the meetup is us with 38,000 other people inside the stadium. Maybe that's what they're meaning. Yeah. I mean, it's a nice idea, but there's no like, no, there's no just cell phone numbers are exchanged. I don't know how to get hold of these people. We're just waiting for Jack Johnson to hang out. Under the hits, 4487, who's having the best weekend? We want to know next.
Starting point is 00:31:05 Every caller that gets on the air gets a ham, thanks to Farmland Foods. But also this morning, we got a $250 The Warehouse giveaway. The doors are back open at The Warehouse Tarapa after a recent fire, and the team would love to see you guys back there. The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast.
Starting point is 00:31:21 We're heading into a busy, busy weekend right around the country, and we want to know on 0800 The Hits, who's having the best weekend? Everyone that gets on the air gets hams, thanks to Farmland Foods. But also today, Jono's going to decide who's going to have the best weekend, in his opinion, and someone
Starting point is 00:31:35 will win a $250 warehouse voucher to spend there. You can do your Christmas shopping from toys to clothes, stocking fillers, and it's awesome that the warehouse Tarapa is open again after a recent fire, so you can head on back there as well. Some great events on this weekend, just looking through the calendar there,
Starting point is 00:31:51 you've got the Star Trek Laser Show in Carterton, Ben. Oh, okay. The pantomime of Pinocchio in Wellington. You've also got, as we said before, Guns N' Roses, Jack Johnson, Christmas in the Park. The Underground Jelly Wrestling Tournament in Gore. No, I don't know if it's on there. The National Wet T-Shirt Champs in Ipikago. Okay, okay, there we go. The Dry T-Shirt Champs in Dunedin. Okay, I don't know if it's the National Wet T-shirt champs in a vocabulary.
Starting point is 00:32:06 The dry t-shirt champs in Dunedin. It's all happening, mate. Now let's get Vienna on. Welcome. Best weekend, Vienna. Yes, hi. Good morning. Lovely to have you on, Vienna. Now, there's no friends in business, and there's no friends when it comes to competing for the best weekend on the Hits Breakfast.
Starting point is 00:32:21 So what is it for you? My one is just very simple because the training in auckland so my plan is to take my two teenagers to the lego exhibit oh a lego exhibition in the altia square i think right they've got some new things yeah yeah i'm more excited than them though so oh you you froth over le, do you? Yeah, I just like the displays. Yeah, they do look good.
Starting point is 00:32:47 When you see them, you're like, oh man, I'm so inspired to build these things. Then you start and you're like,
Starting point is 00:32:51 ugh. Oh, you give up easily. Remember when to build that piano? Yeah, I got to the end
Starting point is 00:32:56 of mine. You did. It was like a 9,000 piece piano and I stopped about 40 minutes. I love it, man.
Starting point is 00:33:01 The satisfaction of doing it all. You just got to keep on going through it. I like starting things and not finishing them
Starting point is 00:33:05 that's my forte hold there Vienna we'll see if you're going to have the best weekend we'll head to Taranaki Denise you're on
Starting point is 00:33:10 welcome how are you I'm great thank you what are you doing this weekend why are you having a banger
Starting point is 00:33:16 well 6 o'clock tomorrow morning I fly out from Wellington and I'm taking my 83 year old mum to Melbourne to see my sister.
Starting point is 00:33:26 First time since COVID. First time since COVID. Years since your mum's seen your sister. What a sweet thing to do. How's it travelling with an 83-year-old? Yeah, well, she wouldn't go on her own, so I had to take her. I know what it's like. I travel with Jono.
Starting point is 00:33:41 Jono falls asleep in the car. You'll have to help him out. I know exactly what it's like. I travel around the country with him. He slept five times without a word of a lie in the same day. Every time he'd get in the car, he'd nap. Yeah, so that's good practice for travelling with an 83-year-old. Yeah, I could do it.
Starting point is 00:33:57 If he can't do it, I'll take it. Hey, hold there, Denise. And we'll take one more Best Weekend, Lani and Taupo. What is it? Guns and Razoses sounds good, but we've got our moko's first birthday on. Oh, grandchild. So I'm gathering tomorrow night kids be bouncing from the walls. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:34:17 Bouncing moko. Okay, geez, we've got some big week here. Everyone gets ham? Everyone gets ham this morning, which is great. Put them all back on. Everyone gets a Christmas ham. And now it's over to you, Jono. Only one will get a $250 warehouse voucher.
Starting point is 00:34:29 You sound like wonderful people, all of you. Vienna, Lani and Denise. You going to acknowledge the compliment? Mate, they're just waiting for you. Acknowledge the compliment. Come on, Simon Cowell. Just make your decision. Well done.
Starting point is 00:34:41 You've all won a chunk of ham. Thank you. Thank you. There we go. The only one losing out of that is the pig.. You've all won a chunk of ham. Thank you. Thank you. There we go. The only one losing out of that is the pig. You guys have all won ham. The winner of the warehouse voucher, $250, is... Lani!
Starting point is 00:35:00 Thank you. Lani and Topo with Mokko's first birthday. Well done. Well done, Lani. And well done Mokul's first birthday. Well done. Well done, Lani. And well done to everyone who rang up this morning getting a ham. We've got plenty more hams to give away. It's going to be a great weekend for everyone right around the country. Good luck at the jelly wrestling in Gore, the wet t-shirts in Ipikago,
Starting point is 00:35:17 the dry ones in Dunners. It's going to be a fantastic weekend. The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast. Last night, Harry and Megan, the first three episodes of their brand new documentary uh was on netflix the whole world is talking about it today uh we we worked our way through uh most of it last night to try and play you some of the bits and as i said before early in the show i really feel for them like living under you know they lose all your people feel for them they made the documentary, you feel that freedom is lost,
Starting point is 00:35:45 all the things, the paparazzi hounding them. So I do really feel for them. Although one particular thing just wound me up. I don't know why, but throughout, they had these little nicknames
Starting point is 00:35:54 for each other. H is in London and I'm here. So H. Is that what you call them? H. H and he was like M, M.
Starting point is 00:36:04 And I was like, H and M, I mean, maybe it was like M And I was like H and M I mean maybe it was the clothing I was like have they sponsored this to H and M The clothing store or what's going on? Well they're not in the royal pocket anymore So maybe it's a bit of integration Into the documentary which is a smart play
Starting point is 00:36:15 I don't know what it is It just sort of wound me up It's patronising for some reason But it's not I mean it's a cute name If you went over there for dinner as a couple When you were driving home you'd be like Oh my god they call themselves h and m all night you
Starting point is 00:36:27 know you'd be bitching about them in the car yeah wouldn't you i see that now the thing is i know people will be hating on them and their approach to it and i think the feeling towards harry and megan would be a little different because they the reason for departing from the royal family was privacy so i think the feeling towards them would be a little different because the reason for departing from the royal family was privacy. So I think the feeling towards them would be a bit different if they were actually living a private life, you know, down in bloody Huntley, Huntley, next to the coal station, just keeping to themselves. But then they've gone out and done a huge deal, hundreds of millions of dollars worth of money for a Netflix deal. Well, to tell their story, because their story,, as she said, was being told by other people.
Starting point is 00:37:08 There's been books written about them that she's had nothing to do with. There's people, there's horrible, horrible stuff being said about them online. They lost all their freedom. And what happened to Harry's mum, obviously, just the worst case scenario in that situation, just horrible. And there was a moment last night, we played it earlier this morning, where Diana actually approached some paparazzi who would not leave the family alone on a ski trip. They're done.
Starting point is 00:37:29 They paraded all the kids out there in front of the paparazzi and then they just kept hounding them. And this is Diana sort of going to talk to one of them. As a parent, could I ask you to respect my children's space? Yes, sir. Yes. That's probably true. Because I brought the children out here for a holiday.
Starting point is 00:37:47 Right. And we'd really appreciate the space. He got an adult telling off, didn't he? He did. He did. But then he kind of said, apologies for that, but can I still get a photo too? I said, no, mate. No.
Starting point is 00:37:57 No. Nothing feels worse than being told off as an adult. You know what I'm loving? Is behind the scenes here, we were like, oh, let's get Thomas Markle Jr. on, Meghan Markle's half-brother who we've spoken to previously. Producer B-Hump's last 24 hours back and forth, talking turkey with Thomas over Instagram. What's an appropriate fee?
Starting point is 00:38:15 Ra-di-ra-di-ra. Do you know who's coming in? We said exclusive. Ben Huffrey demanded exclusive content. Exclusive, Markle. You talk to no one else. It was agreed upon now who's coming
Starting point is 00:38:26 at the ninth hour who's he now Ben Huff Ben Huff he's in a bidding war with Piers bloody Morgan well I think it was exclusive New Zealand
Starting point is 00:38:33 I don't think we can't cut him out the rest of the world yeah oh so exclusive but Piers Morgan he's like I can't talk to anyone
Starting point is 00:38:39 until I've spoken to Piers Morgan fair enough you were talking to him first Ben Huff was in there before Morgan well yeah now I imagine Morgan's paying a lot more oh and maybe he's not until I've spoken to Piers Morgan. Fair enough. You were talking to him first. Ben Hover was in there before Morgan. Well, yeah, now, yeah, because obviously... I imagine Morgan's paying a lot more.
Starting point is 00:38:48 Oh, well, maybe he's not. Maybe he just wants to tell his story. But I found the other thing I thought was really interesting because a lot of people was like saying, you know, maybe this was Megan's dream all along, that she wanted to be in the Royals. It was calculated. She wanted to be a princess.
Starting point is 00:39:03 This is some of the awful stuff that's been said about her but there was a footage that they played last night right at the start of the documentary she was getting quizzed it was like because she was obviously an actor she was getting quizzed about um you know things that she would choose between have a listen to I don't know. Harry. Harry. Sure. Sure. Sure. What year was that? October 2015. October 2015?
Starting point is 00:39:33 Less than a year. Before we met? Honey, I'm sorry. I, of course, choose you. So that was them reflecting on it and seeing that moment. But she had no idea who they were. So, yeah. So I feel for them. I feel really sorry. But now the pessimists to me would go stop it they've put that in they've dated it they've gone it's a
Starting point is 00:39:50 year before we met no don't just feel for these people that are going through this or anything stop feeling for them it's fun to bully people no the hits the jonathan ben podcast wrapping up the year and we're joined in the studio right now by the leader of the National Party, Christopher Luxon. Good morning. Good to be with you guys. Nice to have you here. Now, you've just played
Starting point is 00:40:10 a nice little trick on me between the two of you. Explain. Basically, Ben, he's always mocking us for looking the same, Chris Luxon. That's very unfair, isn't it?
Starting point is 00:40:19 So, at the moment, Chris and me are wearing the same clothes. I said I'm going out to go to the loo. Chris Luxon came back in a grey jersey and a cap, same one I'm wearing. Exactly what you're wearing. And I was so engrossed in this Megan and Harry documentary
Starting point is 00:40:32 on Netflix. I was trying to find this bit of audio where they call each other by their nicknames, H and M, and stuff like that. I was like, yeah. And you came back into the room. I didn't even clock it. It was you. We thought there was about a 10% chance that he'd probably get us.
Starting point is 00:40:44 I just kept going sorry man I'm just trying to find this thing because I'm frantically trying to find that and then when I looked up I was like oh my goodness
Starting point is 00:40:50 yeah we are at the moment we actually do like twins like twins that our mother and they dress the twins the same don't you think it's unfair though just because you're bald
Starting point is 00:40:56 that you end up looking exactly the same it's a stereotype that we all have it's discrimination it's a stereotype let's get that through forget three waters mate
Starting point is 00:41:04 let's get the bald bill through now 12 months has it been 12 months yeah it has been it's been 12 months in the job and um is that the longest leader since John Key in the national party it's been stable but it's uh but no look I mean honestly we've made great progress in the 12 months and it's we've got a great team and um but you just I mean it's a pretty special job actually because I try and go to two or three towns or one, two or three towns each and every week and you meet lots of amazing people up and down this country doing incredible things
Starting point is 00:41:31 and it's pretty inspiring actually. Because you do mention towns and Te Puke, one of your favourite towns. Well, that's why I brought you guys some Christmas cheer this morning. These are not bog standard chocolates. These are actually Hawaiian host chocolates that I secured on my trip to uh to tepuki via honolulu so um i thought you might
Starting point is 00:41:49 enjoy these thank you from the famous trip that is from hawaii oh this is great oh thank you very much they're not kiwi fruit flavored though are they not kiwi fruit okay now uh this three waters thing excuse my ignorance i know it's a thing. And I know it's to do with the ownership who controls who runs the water throughout the country. Why is everyone getting so fired up about it? Well, look, the problem is that these are assets that ratepayers have paid through their rates over the last 30 or 50 years. And they want to be able to have local influence and control over those water assets. So if you have a water quality problem, you want your local council to be able to have local influence and control over those those water assets so if you have a water quality problem you want your local council to be able to deal with it and the government's
Starting point is 00:42:28 proposing to take all those assets out of ownership of local councils put them into four big mega entities create a whole bunch of bureaucracy you just know you're not going to get that local response and we sort of have seen the same model with all the polytechnics you know the 16 poly techniques across new zealand got sucked into one big organisation It hasn't been very successful We're starting to see it with the DHBs getting Sucked into one. It seems like no one wants, the Green Party Don't even want it. No it's just All the political parties are opposed to it
Starting point is 00:42:54 And it's essentially just The fact that the assets have been taken out of local control And local influence. Why do you think they're just Why are they barrelling on with it then? If the majority Don't want this to happen. Yeah well The government's very fixated on sort of centralisation and control. And we sort of just have a different model, which is we believe in what's called localism and devolution. You just push the ownership of those assets and certainly actually work with local people on the ground to solve the problems that we've got.
Starting point is 00:43:18 And so it's just a difference in philosophy. But it's just, again, it's going to create huge bureaucracy and not actually going to, I don't think, lead to good outcomes. So you've said you'll undo it if it does go through. How easy is it, if you do win the next election, how easy is it to come in and go, I'm undoing everything? Yeah, yeah. It's a challenge, right? But there's some big things that we'd have to undo.
Starting point is 00:43:37 You know, the Radio New Zealand TVNZ merger is another one. This won't probably be in full implementation, so I think there will be a period of time from when we win to actually these entities taking shape in the middle of 2024. So there's plenty of time for us to expand. When we win? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Is that coming with confidence?
Starting point is 00:43:54 You've got to talk positively. No, we've got a long way to go. Probably the election's maybe a year away, so there's still a long way to go. But, yeah, we've made good progress. We are out and about listening to New Zealanders and understanding what the concerns and challenges and opportunities that we have.
Starting point is 00:44:08 And our job over the next year is to earn the trust of New Zealand people. And singing songs as well throughout the year. Singing songs, I'll try and avoid that, I think. Now we're going to play a little clip right now of you singing Bill's, which was, I think, when your puppet was unveiled. I think I got set up. And because I'm so new to politics, I've been there two years, I think the journalist said, oh, no, it's very much a tradition that everyone has to sing their song
Starting point is 00:44:29 when they get a new puppet at the backbench. You're like a stitcher. I wouldn't know that from... Media stitcher. Here's a clip. About halfway through the singing, I realised it was a problem. It sums up how New Zealanders are feeling across this country. Got bills I've got to pay.
Starting point is 00:44:46 So I'm going to work, work, work every day. Yeah, but then it's kind of become something you've run with because I saw you the other day at a school singing along with the students. Yeah, there's an amazing school, Manurewa Intermediate, and the kids actually sung the song and their own version of it. And they just, they did it with so much energy. And then it turns out Lunch Money Lewis, who actually did the original one, he's got sort of involved in it all and followed it all.
Starting point is 00:45:07 And it's been great. Oh, really? Yeah, he's been awesome. Well, listen, we do know that there is history with the National Party and plagiarising popular songs. You know, there's, I don't want to bring up Eminem. As I said to my guys, make it more than fairly legal. You don't want Lunch Money turning up with his hands.
Starting point is 00:45:23 Wanting his lunch money. Wanting his lunch money. And so highlight for the year for you, Chris Luxon. I think in general just the progress we've made in 12 months. Think about where we were as a party. Think about where we are now. I think we've got a lot more work ahead of us to make sure we propose good ideas for New Zealand to take it forward.
Starting point is 00:45:40 But man, we've got a great country and got amazing people and that's pretty inspiring stuff. Hey, Christopher Luxarkson, thanks for coming in. Hey, well, thank you, guys. Congratulations on having a good year as leader of the National Party. And you have a wonderful – what do you do for Christmas? What do politicians do for Christmas? I just want to get in the shorts and T-shirt and go to a beach somewhere, really,
Starting point is 00:45:57 for a few days and just chill with the family and friends. To Pukii Honolulu. To Pukii Honolulu by Hickey or somewhere. But I just say to you guys, thanks so much for bringing so much fun to people each and every day. You guys are awesome and you do a great job. But importantly to all your listeners, just go have a great break, refresh, recharge,
Starting point is 00:46:12 spend time with your loved ones and gear up for another year next year. Chris Luxon, thank you very much. And also we'll put that video up. Oh, it's a video of me, is it? Yeah, we're filming at Mades Radio, buddy. Multimedia nowadays. I wasn't paying any attention.
Starting point is 00:46:24 I look like an idiot. Good. You'll see Ben looking like an idiot confusing Chris Luxon for me. I'll put that up on the Hits social media channels later today. The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast. Jono and Ben, and let's give away some cash. Let's go. Jono and Ben with five words for 5K.
Starting point is 00:46:42 Stop any time to keep the cash. Thank you. Or play on to keep the cash. Thank you. Or play on to win more. It is our Game of Words Association. We play it every morning at this time on The Hits. This is your sixth to last chance this year to try and win some money. That's right.
Starting point is 00:46:55 You can forget about the cost of living because the cost of living will be free if you win 5K. Hey, Calder joins us on New Zealand's Breakfast. How are you, Calder? Good. Lovely to meet you, mate. Although apparently we did meet.
Starting point is 00:47:07 We met in Palmerston North. Yeah. On the Bunnings Sausage Sizzle Tour. It was great to meet you there. Thank you for coming down. Yeah, you're welcome. How old are you now, mate? Nine.
Starting point is 00:47:18 Nine. So you're going to get the family to help you out with this one this morning? Maybe. Maybe. We'll see. What's your birthday today, someone said. Yeah. Nine's birthday.
Starting point is 00:47:28 Happy birthday. Yay. Yeah, it's all downhill from here, Calder. Here's a cherry thorn for your Friday. Okay. Who do you want to send into the soundproof booth, mate? Jono. All right.
Starting point is 00:47:40 Jono's going to head in there, Calder. Obviously, you know how the game works. He's in there right now. Let's go to our first word. What do you think when I say but? Simpson. Simpson. Yeah, that's what I was thinking.
Starting point is 00:47:54 Nappy is word number two, Korda. Nappy. Diaper. Diaper. Drum. Drum. Set. Like a drum set. Oh, drum set. Yeah. Set. Like a drum set.
Starting point is 00:48:07 Oh, drum set. Yeah, okay, drum set. Stop is word number four. S-T-O-P, stop. Go. Stop, go. And ship is the final word. S-H-I-P.
Starting point is 00:48:22 Cruise. Cruise. Very good options there, Korda. We'll get Jono out of the soundproof. The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast. About, I'd say, well, six or seven weeks ago, we launched something pretty exciting, didn't we?
Starting point is 00:48:35 In times of uncertainty, what we need is more uncertainty. Uncertainty, like a packet of confusingly flavoured chips. Chips like no mouth has ever tasted before maple bacon sour cream and chives and salt and vinegar john owen ben in association with heartland chips in association with space will launch their chips into all good retailers and then live from christchurch send them out of this world into space.
Starting point is 00:49:07 Jeez, was that only six weeks ago, our space trip? You forget about it. So you go to space and you just forget about it so quickly. Yeah, we sent the chips into space. They're an out-of-this-world mashup. Thanks to Heartland Chips, some maple bacon, sour cream and chives, sprinkled with salt and vinegar. And all you had to do was grab yourself a bag,
Starting point is 00:49:22 send us a picture of you enjoying the chips, and you were in the draw for the grand prize of ten thousand dollars yeah pretty incredible a huge amount of money uh you know you put all your chips in on this competition we got so many photos thousands of photos so thank you to everyone who sent us so many fun photos some some naked photos some inappropriate photos there was you know the chips got up to some stuff i didn't even know that it was possible for chips. Now, it's just a random draw at the moment because there were so many great photos. So, producer Behumps has gone through them all and we've just pulled out one at random.
Starting point is 00:49:53 So, we're going to give a call right now with a $10,000 call. Hello, Jess speaking. Oh, hello, Jess speaking. Hello. It's Jono and Ben speaking from the Hits Radio station. Hello, Jono and Ben. How's your day going? Oh, yeah, it's pretty early.
Starting point is 00:50:11 I've been up listening to you. Oh, good. We're just going through the spreadsheet. We've got a spreadsheet of everyone who's purchased our chips over the last four weeks, and we're just going through one by one, meticulously just getting consumer feedback. What did you think? They were delicious. They were very tasty.
Starting point is 00:50:27 Well, I'm glad you said that because guess what? What? You've just won $10,000. Oh, my God. $10,000. $10,000. Oh, shit. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:50:39 Well, beep, beep. Sorry, I was a bit late on that one. Just pretend there was a beep when she said that. Oh, my God. The Sex, the Heartland Chips, New Zealand's chip from our farm to you, and they are giving you $10,000. Wow. I mean, that's a lot of money.
Starting point is 00:50:53 Holy moly, that's a huge amount of money. Oh, my God, the girls are going to be so excited. Ten? It's a wild amount of money, particularly just before Christmas, Jess. What's it going on? Well, I'm getting married in March, so it'll be going all towards that. Oh, awesome. Well, we will expect an invite to the wedding.
Starting point is 00:51:13 Okay, yes. I'd love you guys to come. If not, I reckon up at the big table. What? Okay. Yeah. What big table? I'll be your bridesmaid, Ben will be the groomsman.
Starting point is 00:51:26 I think there's a variety Of people that mean A lot more to her than that But you know We're up there now Who means more to her Than two people Who just gave her $10,000
Starting point is 00:51:31 No It's alright You guys sold You can be at the top table Oh good See the deal's done Oh well that's awesome Oh my god
Starting point is 00:51:38 What a start to a Friday Holy moly Producer B hubs Because it was just Drawn at random Yeah The picture But he's just sent
Starting point is 00:51:45 through the picture to us over email right now you've got a photo look like you've got the whole team around enjoying who are the team?
Starting point is 00:51:51 So it is my nurses we're vet nurses and we are at Vet South in Invercargill so yeah we decided to take a photo with your chips
Starting point is 00:52:01 and our flash new scrub tops oh they are the purple sort of scrub tops aren't they? yes the purple sort of scrub tops, aren't they? Yeah. Yes, yep, yep. Very fancy.
Starting point is 00:52:08 So they're for Casual Friday. So it's going to be a great Friday today. Oh, well, just don't tell anyone else in the photo that. I know, I have to run away now. Yeah, yeah. Whatever happened to you? I don't know. I just fled in for cargo.

Starting point is 00:52:35 So many thousands and thousands of photos who enjoyed our Heartland Chips. And thanks, of course, to Heartland Chips, New Zealand's chip from our farm to you. I think there's still a few more bags around. There's a few at the tail end, a few stragglers. Get those off the shelves.
Starting point is 00:52:48 They're out of this world flavor. We're really proud to be part of this. It's been awesome actually. It was really fun. It was actually
Starting point is 00:52:52 probably the most popular thing we've done. People saying I love them. I love them and they're not talking about our podcast
Starting point is 00:52:58 bed. No, they're not. The hits. The Jono and Ben podcast. Last night it dropped the first three episodes, the
Starting point is 00:53:04 documentary around Harry and Meghan on Netflix. No one sees what's happening behind the closed doors. I had to do everything I could to protect my family. When the stakes are this high, doesn't it make more sense to hear our story from us? Strap yourselves in for a defamation case. Strip yourselves in for a defamation case. All right.
Starting point is 00:53:34 Laura McGoldrick, come on down. What I thought was a pretty soft launch, a soft launch for the Harry and Meghan doco. Well, you only watched 10 minutes of it, didn't you? You fell asleep. So the first 10 minutes were pretty soft. But then it got into, apparently, episode two got into it. Anywayura mcguljic on for brad and laura in the afternoon so i didn't want to watch the doco because i'm only up to season one of the crown i didn't want any spoilers but anyway here we are we get to find out the real story of harry
Starting point is 00:53:56 and megan last night as told by them what do you think um look to be honest i actually don't know how i feel about the whole thing look there's a's a lot. I need a glass of wine. What the thing is. A glass of wine? It's 8 o'clock in the morning. Yeah, you're welcome. So what I think the most shocking thing to me is, part of me felt this sort of empathy,
Starting point is 00:54:19 particularly towards Harry when he was talking about his mother, which was all in the first episode. And I actually found myself getting quite emotional. I was a huge Princess Diana fan. When they had the babies around the picture of Lady Diana and she was saying, you know, this is your grandma and you're like, yes, this is their grandma and this is a family and it's been
Starting point is 00:54:34 it just shouldn't have got to this point and I think that if they told their love story, which they do in the first episode and the second one does go a bit deeper into the racism issue and what have you, if this was the first time we'd heard from them i think that's exactly the overall emotion you would feel it's just this general genuine empathy for what they have gone through now no one asked to be born into the royal family it does look like a hell job but she the way she
Starting point is 00:54:59 pleads ignorance so much in it i find to be hugely frustrating because she didn't live under a rock she talked about you know how stiff and upper lip they have behind closed doors as well it was okay ignorance so much in it, I find to be hugely frustrating because she didn't live under a rock. She talked about, you know, how stiff and upper lip they have behind closed doors as well. Okay, they are the royal family. I don't know sort of what you expect. She kept going, oh, you know, he wanted me to curtsy for the queen. Like, my God. Yes, his grandma, but it's still the frigging queen love.
Starting point is 00:55:18 He best curtsy. Yeah, it was always going to probably give favor towards Harry and Meghan, this documentary. Well, they made the doco, right? They made the doco. Yeah, they did. You're never going to make a doco. You're never going to make yourself favour towards Harry and Meghan in this documentary. Oh, they made the doco, right? They made the doco. Yeah. You're never going to make a doco. You're only going to make yourself look like a doco, yeah. But this is made by them, so it was always going to make you feel sorry for them.
Starting point is 00:55:33 Do you feel the same way about Meghan Markle as you did heading into it? Yeah, I feel no different. Which is what? Which is, look, and everyone goes, well, Laura hates Meghan Markle. I actually don't hate her. I was really excited when she came into the royal family, as they talk about in the second and everyone goes, well, Laura hates me. I actually don't hate her. I was really excited when she came into the royal family
Starting point is 00:55:46 as they talk about in the second and third episode. Like, this is fantastic. You know, this is a way for the royal family to actually start looking
Starting point is 00:55:52 like what the rest of the, you know, Great Britain looks like. You know, this is exciting. She's a breath of fresh air. You know, she's completely different
Starting point is 00:55:58 to what they've had in there and Harry seems genuinely in love. And look, they do seem genuinely in love to the point where you want to sort of be sick watching it and you're not sure how much of it is real. And that is the problem with genuinely in love to the point where you want to sort of be sick watching it
Starting point is 00:56:05 and you're not sure how much of it is real. And that is the problem with her. So much has been made of the fact that she does know how to put on a show and put on a performance. You're not sure what you're watching, how sincere it actually is. And look, it can't have been easy,
Starting point is 00:56:16 her being introduced the way she was. And the media are horrific. Oh, horrible. Especially in Great Britain, if you are part of the royal family. Now, speaking of media hounding poor Meghan, because I felt, you know, I'm really, really sorry for them, but have a listen to this bit of audio that we've uncovered
Starting point is 00:56:31 with the media hounding Meghan. I think this was in New Zealand. Have a listen. Hi, I'm Laura. Thank you so much. Thank you, thank you. Greatest day of my life. Greatest day of my life.
Starting point is 00:56:41 So that was Laura McGoldrick, a Beijing Meghan Markle in New Zealand, saying it was the greatest day of her life. Yeah, no, life. So that was Laura McGoldrick, a Beijing Meghan Markle in New Zealand. Say it was the greatest day of her life. Yeah, no, it was. It was right up there because at that stage, I was fully bought into the Meghan Markle thing. I thought she was great. I loved Harry. Clearly, I love a ginger. You know, Harry
Starting point is 00:56:56 was my favourite royal. I was high up for the two of us to get together. Because she's actually very captivating. She's beautiful. The whole thing was truly fascinating, like the Hollywood romance, you know, Prince meets actress. It was all a bit much for me. I was very excited.
Starting point is 00:57:11 The thing last night they also met on Instagram I found interesting. She had like a Snapchat dog filter on. He was late for their first date. They went to Botswana in Africa after only going on two dates and went camping for a week with no bathroom. All those things I found really interesting,
Starting point is 00:57:26 but I felt sorry for them by the end of it, just that whole life they have to live. And I'm not really a big Royal fan, so it did definitely sway my opinion towards it. So they've done their job for you then? That's what I keep saying to them. The PR spin is just... But he's easily swayed.
Starting point is 00:57:40 Yeah, I am. I'll watch one of the Royals tomorrow, their reply, and I'll be like, oh, the Royals, they've been hard done by. He's a shocker. I just felt like it was two people sitting, like if I'd gone to their house and they would give me a blow-by-blow account of how they met. But you don't know these things.
Starting point is 00:57:53 Half an hour later, I'd be like, oh, man. It felt like you'd gone over to a couple's house and they'd put on a slideshow. They'd lost me. Yeah, and then you're going to go home and have a fight with your wife in the car. She's going to go, why don't you do that to me? Yeah. It was the thing that kept, like, you're like, okay, you want your privacy. Then why the frigging Nora would you do that?
Starting point is 00:58:10 I don't understand. If you want your privacy, you want everyone to leave you alone. Why would you do a six-part documentary? I think they deserve their privacy now. Like, I'd be like, now I'd be like, leave them alone, you know? Like, because of that. Oh, come on. Is that why they did the six-part documentary?
Starting point is 00:58:23 Because they wanted the privacy? Do you think that you'd get more privacy than that? I why they did the six part documentary because they wanted the privacy do you think that you'd get more privacy than that I think they did the Netflix docker because they wanted the hundreds of millions of dollars yeah 200 I reckon yeah that's quite nice
Starting point is 00:58:32 oh I'm sure you'll have plenty more to say about the greatest day of your life and the documentary this afternoon on Brad and Laura thanks guys have a lovely day
Starting point is 00:58:41 you too bud
