This John O'Bien podcast brought to you by HelloFresh, the experts in tastes that Kiwis love.
Welcome to the podcast on a Monday morning. A really, really interesting one for you today.
We managed to track down Dylan Bode, who is from America, came to New Zealand to watch Coldplay
because Coldplay helped him wake up from a coma. The fascinating story is going to join you very shortly.
You went along to the Coldplay. You'll also hear how Ben had the awkward moment Of someone was sitting in his seats
They were lovely about it too
But well, that's my wife
Your wife said that they were lovely
You know
How does Ben Boyce deal with
Someone being in his seat?
Well he sends his wife
How many awkward confrontations have you seen Amanda in?
Oh lots, she's a lot better with those sort of things
Yeah exactly, if I can avoid an awkward Situation I will How many awkward confrontations have you seen Amanda in? Oh, lots. She's a lot better with those sort of things. Yeah, exactly.
If I can avoid an awkward situation, I will, you know.
But do you not know what she's saying over there?
No, who knows?
She could be like, that guy over there has sent me over here to say that he's really annoyed.
Yeah, true.
She's like, I don't care about it.
I don't mind.
But that guy there, she's the guy there and I'm like waving politely with a big smile.
That would be a great trick if she does do that.
He's about to go really violent.
They all start glaring over you.
You're like, wait, what?
I go, guys.
Gets results every time.
That's right.
That's probably what happens.
Well, enjoy the podcast.
We'll shut up now because it's such a great chat with Dylan for you right now.
Dylan Bowe joins us in the studio.
Good morning, Dylan.
Great to have you here.
Thanks for having me. Now, Bowe joins us in the studio. Good morning, Dylan. Great to have you here. Thanks for having me.
Now, Coldplay over the weekend was amazing.
I went and saw it myself,
but you have a very special connection.
You got caught up on stage with Coldplay.
So, backstory, you're from America.
Yes.
Sorry about that right now.
No, that's fine.
Don't apologize.
I'm one of the good ones.
Do you want to go back? No.
I'm on a visa right now. Do you want to go back? No.
I'm on a visa right now.
So you're from Minnesota, and you've flown all the way over here to see Coldplay.
That's right.
Well, hey, I went and saw them.
It's probably worth it. Yeah, it's worth it if you don't get called on stage with Chris Martin.
But you got called up on stage.
So you had a sign at the concert.
What did it say?
Yeah, so I said, your music woke me up from a coma.
Can we sing about this magic together? Which, yeah. And Chris Martin saw this. He did see it uh your music woke me up from a coma can we sing about this magic together
which yeah and he did and chris martin saw this he did see it and he called me up god yeah it's
crazy it's still like i can shake just thinking about the moment yeah well you get to relive it
now because someone filmed it and put it on the internet I'm calling you I'm calling you
That's you harmonising with Chris Martin.
Yeah.
That's incredible.
In front of 57,000 people.
I've done it about a billion times in my car.
I didn't ever think it happened in real life.
In front of 50,000 people.
You're just shutting your eyes there, shaking your head.
Does it still give you goosebumps listening to it?
Yeah.
Yeah, it does. So this is a legit story because that's what Chris Martin asked you as well. you're shaking your head does it still give you give you goosebumps listening to it yeah yeah it
does yeah so this is a legit story because that's what chris martin asked you as well he's like is
it legit that you woke up from a coma listening to coldplay yeah and it is a legit story you know
it um i had an incident about eight months ago now and my heart stopped i had about five seconds
and um hit my head pretty bad so So I was in the hospital.
Went into coma for about four days.
And yeah, they told my husband, my family.
I'm from Hawaii originally, actually, from Maui.
So they all flew in,
expecting that they'd have to pull the plug maybe.
They talked about that with my husband, which was scary. And about day three, the chaplain came in.
Now, I don't remember this very well.
Obviously, I was not there.
Yeah, you're on a con run.
I'm all telling you this from what they told me.
And he said, you know, they asked him, what can they do to make me more comfortable?
And he's like, well, put Coldplay on.
It's the only thing that he's loved since he was about eight years old.
I mean, that's when I started listening to Coldplay.
I've been listening to it my whole life.
And like a lot of people, Coldplay's music has helped them through a lot of things.
And then, yeah, so about 24 hours after hearing Coldplay, the first signs of coming back out of this is me playing air piano.
And everything, all the doctors, I mean, people that just changed the whole course of the whole healing process.
I mean, everybody came back in to that room, doctors, neurologists,
everybody were like, he's going to make it.
Because they thought for sure either I was going to die, number one,
or two, I'd be permanently brain damaged.
I mean, either two outcomes.
So they're basically telling your family and your husband there's no hope at this point?
Either there's no hope or that you're going to be permanently brain damaged or there's going to be some severe damage done
and from that Coldplay brings well pretty much helped at least help me back to life yeah I mean
doctors and nurses for sure I love it Chris Martin's like we should give credit to the
medical professionals as well and I agree and nurses are the real heroes for sure I mean I
my nurses there were like the best human beings on the planet and
they'd never get enough credit so you flew to new zealand for this yeah so i flew yeah because you
know after this there's a lot of recovery process occupational physiotherapists
everywhere else in the world and um i knew that this show i'd be ready to fly. And I hadn't flown really at all after this because it's a bit of a recovery and especially dancing and flashing lights and the overstimulation of a concert of this type.
So it took a while to be ready.
And I knew that by this, these shows, I could handle it again.
So I was like, we have to set this date.
We're going to get ready.
We're going to get back.
We can do this.
And, you know, the Coldplay's message that has always been around for a long time is never give up.
I've had this head on probably not every day because I had to try not to lose my hair.
But most of the time since this happened, I've listened to Coldplay and physiotherapy to get me through hard healing moments
and emotional therapy through it to recover.
And so, yeah, I knew I'd make it here.
I tried my best.
Even if I didn't get called on stage with Chris,
I wanted to thank him for saving my life.
Yeah.
So I just wanted to say thank you.
Geez, I tell you what, he's come here and he has charmed the pants
of New Zealand Chris Martin.
Was he?
Because I could see him touching your face and hugging you.
Well, let's do another classic radio stage.
Have you got time just to hang around for five more minutes and tell us exactly what it's like being up on stage with Chris Martin?
Yeah, for sure.
Singing a song with Chris Martin.
It's an incredible story.
I want to keep you around if that's all right.
And also I want to ask you how on earth we tracked you down as well.
The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast.
Dylan Bode, he's in New Zealand zealand he from america he got pulled
up on stage to sing with coldplay friday night he had a sign saying coldplay helped me wake up
from a coma incredible
oh it was a beautiful moment which has made news all over the uh the world and uh dylan has kindly Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do Oh, yes, I do
Oh, yes, I do
Oh, yes, I do
Oh, yes, I do
Oh, yes, I do
Oh, yes, I do
Oh, yes, I do
Oh, yes, I do
Oh, yes, I do
Oh, yes, I do
Oh, yes, I do
Oh, yes, I do
Oh, yes, I do
Oh, yes, I do
Oh, yes, I do you out from the crowd you know i thought there was a slight chance but i didn't know for sure not at all yeah because there's a lot of great signs right he's helped so many people i mean
he's freaking chris martin yeah he just looks out of the sea of his goodwill he's like jesus
you brought back my sight chris martin
and so he calls you up on stage and then you get to sing with him sitting i mean firstly how surreal
was that sitting well first of all he tied my shoe i don't know if you saw that on this thing he tied my shoe i'm like oh my gosh yeah it's it's pretty crazy
it was a little embarrassing maybe but um he's jesus jesus washed feet yeah he's the most kind
man ever probably in the world yeah people tell you they don't like coldplay you hear a lot of
these comments you don't like chris martin whatever i mean i don't know how maybe we can
disagree on music but you can't disagree that he, whatever. I mean, I don't know how, maybe we can disagree on music,
but you can't disagree that he's a pretty great human being.
Oh, yeah.
The most lovely man.
The most lovely person, yeah.
So, yeah, that was crazy.
And then just to see him and he's so sweet and he's so kind and loving
and it's like, oh, yeah, this isn't fake.
It's not a fake act.
He wasn't just trying to get a fan off the stage or, like, hurry it up.
He was just so sweet and kind and uh you
could tell he was in the moment with you yeah yeah did he have any words to say to you that
maybe everyone else didn't hear um he just said i love love you thank you for you know everything
and i hope you continue to do well there was yeah it's just some moments that said um you know
we'll always be together wow yeah so what did that moment
mean to you because i mean obviously you come out of a coma you've gone through so much over the
last while with health you know with your health getting back to to be able to fly you come to
new zealand halfway around the world and then you're on stage with chris martin i mean what
did that mean well and it's deeper than that i think because obviously there's the coma aspect
brought me back to life it's huge right to have the second chance in life and I think that's what it taught me more than anything is I take every moment,
like sitting with you all right now, I don't take anything for granted anymore.
That's definitely not up there with Chris Martin, that's for sure.
No, it's not, but it is actually.
You know, it is because I take every meeting with people now.
Like everyone in New Zealand has been so friendly.
And, you know, all the fans I've also met along the way and like all the stories actually it's all up there in some way but the meeting with Chris Martin was
it's it goes way back before this because you know he's been with me since I was like
eight years old in some way he inspired my musical journey I've been singing since I was a kid and
doing music and and so meeting him you know it's brought me back to every moment I've sang with him
I've harmonized with him since I was a kid.
He taught me, he taught me music.
And so it was like this human being who felt like a best friend of mine in so many ways.
That I've like met this best friend that I never had met before in person.
And I think that's why he woke me up from the coma is because not just maybe the music,
but it's because it was like, hey, that's one of the family members that I've actually
known the closest in some ways.
Wow.
It was meant to be.
It was meant to be.
It was meant to be.
So you've been doing your vocal warmups for 15 years.
You're ready to go, baby.
Put them on.
Put them on.
So anyway, yeah, it was just crazy meeting him.
And he was so sweet and so kind.
And then I got thrown back over the barricade again.
Back out there.
You're back out there.
Thank you so much for being here this morning.
It's been amazing to meet you.
What did he smell like?
He smelled really good from having jumped up and down on stage
and running around for that long.
I don't think any of us would have smelled that good after.
I don't know.
I can speak for myself.
No, you're right.
You're right.
Of all the questions, what did he smell like?
I got that a lot, actually.
That's a really good question.
Yeah, mostly glass. That's very really good question. Yeah, mostly plaster.
That's very normal.
Well, safe travels.
Lovely to meet you.
Thank you so much for hanging out.
The Hits, the Jonah and Ben podcast.
The weekend, my daughter has just started saying sentences,
which is great.
It's cute.
But she's started to get me into trouble.
So, like, in our house, you're going to cringe.
You guys are going to be like, oh of course. But we don't
Andrew and I don't
we don't go to the toilet like with
the doors open. We don't
like let each other know when you go to the toilet.
We don't like fart in front of each other.
We just keep that. What do you do? Do you clench?
Do you? Well you go to another room
or something. You know. That's fine.
You want to keep it. We just like to keep
that stuff between us
you know
although you never
know what's happening
when you're asleep
and he's awake
you don't know
what he's heard
because I always
fall asleep first
because we get up
early and stuff
and he always
delights in telling
me if I've
lighted up my sleep
yeah he's heard
yeah
but
yesterday
my daughter
and I were in the
kitchen
and my husband's
down the hallway
and I was like this this is safe territory.
I'm just going to do a little dainty lady like.
It's not dainty.
Don't try and paint it as dainty.
Just a little dainty lady like fart.
But everyone's warrior would be Megan.
It was.
It was so dainty.
It smelled like an English meadow.
It smelled like an english meadow yeah smell like roses um but my daughter
looked at me and started smiling and she was like mommy no poopy and i was like no no no no i was
like no no no she's like no poopy mommy and and andrew's like wait what did she say he's like what
did she say oh no and she's like mommy smelly i was like no she didn she say? Oh, no. And she's like, Mommy's smelly. I was like, no, she didn't say anything.
Don't worry.
Don't worry.
So now she's taken to calling me out and can't even fart in front of me.
Yeah, and the good thing is kids can't read a room, too.
They don't know when all goodness is around, do they?
They'll just say whatever is about to explode out of their mouth.
They'll just say it.
She was literally asking me if I'd poop myself.
You sounded like follow through, Mommy.
It's a really bad smell.
Now, on Friday, we're in Christchurch,
weren't we, for the Christchurch show?
And you're sort of traipsing around the place,
paying people to have photos with us.
That's what it's come to.
They've got prize money if you had a photo with us.
Now, there was something that was happening
throughout the day, and whenever you take photos in any setting, family, whatever,
personal, professional, there's always that awkward sort of three
to five seconds of silence whilst posing.
Yeah.
Do you notice that?
Well, yeah, we've all tried to talk through that awkwardness,
and your photos look terrible because you're mid-life, you know,
so it's better just to stop and do what people have done for centuries.
Just smile.
Smile and stop.
Have a moment.
You had a great little thing
that you don't do it so often now,
but it used to make a little noise,
like a little...
Yeah,
just a little...
Like a little balloon,
like slowly letting out air
at the end of a party.
What,
is that to get like a good smile?
I don't know why,
I didn't realise I was doing it.
I used to get mocked for it
at an old radio station.
I'd just be like... I don't know why that's... It was I was doing it. I used to get mocked for it at an old radio station. I'd just be like, eh.
I don't know why that is.
It was like you were on the verge of almost saying something.
But then I'd be like, no.
There's a leak in the balloon.
Yeah, exactly.
So, yeah, I'm not a big fan of the silence.
So I like to, you know, if we're, for example, at a farm,
you go, okay, let's say cows on the count of three.
One, two, three, cows. Now, this is what I let's say cows on the count of three. One, two, three, cows.
Now, this is what
I want to get into.
The count of three,
I experienced over the weekend
my daughter.
She was like,
let's do cookies on three.
One, two, cookies.
Oh, what?
But no, when you think about it,
is she right?
Because we're saying
on the beat of three,
you've got to say the word.
No, but I, generally, everyone would say one, two, three, cookie.
I know, but have we been doing it wrong?
Yeah, maybe we have.
Because you're saying on three, so that is technically one, two, bang.
Also, cookies makes no sense.
The reason we say cheese is because it makes the smile.
Yeah, when you go cows or whatever, who knows what that's doing for us.
You're mixing it up. I'm going to make like an O's at cows. That's why cheese is the thing, because it makes the smile Yeah, when you go cows or whatever, who knows what that's doing for us. You're mixing it up.
I'm going to make like an O's at cows. That's why
cheese is the thing because it makes you smile.
It makes you smile. It's not just pick a random word
that you want. It's like, oh,
we're on a farm, let's go cows. Everyone's like, cows?
I said cows at the show
on Friday, Thursday
and I was like, cows and no one else
said cows. Not even you did.
Because I'm like, my mouth's going to be like, cows, you have to make a wide mouth for those.
Not even Jono said cows.
I was like, cows, by myself.
That's why cheese has been the thing for years.
If you find another word that makes me smile, like makes you look like I'm smiling, I'm happy to do it.
Prune's apparently a good one because it makes you pout.
No, prunes.
Oh, prunes.
Okay, so if you want a pouty photo.
What about courgettes?
Courgette. Courgette. Oh, maybe the jet, so if you want a pouty photo. What about courgettes? Courgettes.
Courgettes.
Maybe the jet part you can smile.
Yeah.
But anyway, there's just a timing on it.
What do you reckon?
Do we go one, two, then the word?
Or one, two, three, then the word?
Yeah, probably could go one, two, then the word.
Because it can throw off the algorithm if everyone's doing it at different times, can't it?
Yeah, one, two, cheese.
Why don't you just go everyone say cheese
cheese
I reckon the awkwardness
is a lot to do with
the photographer
like the photographer
can help
if you get a great photographer
who talks through
alright guys
here we go
let's look
you're like
there's no awkwardness
but as soon as someone stops
and says nothing
because otherwise
you're just standing there
cuddling strangers
in silence
can't even hear the click
these days on a phone
you know so you're like have they taken the click these days on a phone, you know?
So you're like, have they taken the photo?
They're like, yep, they handed your photo back.
One of my favourite moments is when a camera is handed over
to a less than qualified photographer.
And they're fumbling through.
We had a wonderful guy, Siggy Dangling, out of his mouth.
And his wife was like, let's have a photo.
And I was like, you can get in too, mate.
He's like, nah.
And then he was just sort of standing there with the phone for a while.
And I was like, oh, I notice his thumb's not moving or his fingers aren't moving he's just sort
of holding it and he's like i don't know what to do and so then she then they have to come out of
the embrace and then go and do a bit of a crash course in instruction don't they it's an all good
moment the hits the jonathan ben podcast uh hi lo buffalo are we doing this again this is a part of
the show you introduced three or four weeks ago uh although we do it yeah so it's your high of the week your weekends your
low of the weekend or your buffalo which for some reason is the funny thing but if we found out if
we each go high low buffalo it takes too long too much so that we can just choose one loads of weeks
with the content probably does that as well too right uh so what are you gonna go megan um i
probably should go high, right?
You can do whatever you want, mate.
I'm going to go low then.
I poured hot water on my hand yesterday.
On your carpal tunnel hand?
Yes.
Which I was okay with because then I was like,
it's still only one hand that's munted.
Might I say that bandage is looking incredibly manky.
Oh, really?
I'm really embarrassed about it.
No, don't be.
I like it.
It's got a character.
He's coming off today.
Well, two now, because he's definitely noticed it.
It's looking yellow and dirt.
I was thinking, considering it's been on for over a week, it's not too bad.
It's travelled.
It's been all over the country.
It's been to an A&P show.
It's ridden lawnmowers.
Petted animals, all sorts, isn't it?
And it looks like it. With that in mind, it doesn't look that bad, right? Cold play, it's not everything. Exactly Ridden lawnmowers Petted animals All sorts So with that
With that in mind
It doesn't look that bad
Right
Cold play
Start everything
Don't sniff it
I've noticed that bandage
Has done a lot
Over the last week
I know
Don't sniff it
It definitely looks like it
Now I've poured
Water on my hand
Mind you
I would have
Sanitised the bandage
Yes
Exactly
Did you get a blister
No
What did she have
What are we talking
Boiling water
Or just sort of?
It was literally straight, I'd boiled a pot of pasta
and then as I drained it, I decided to drain it on my hands.
That's probably my low yesterday.
Okay, that's a low.
What about you, Jono?
High low or buffalo?
I'm going to go buffalo.
Okay.
And my buffalo was, I spent probably about 45 minutes
in a hole about buffalo.
Researching buffalo.
Oh, did you?
Yeah, I was like, I don't know much about them.
The buffalo the animal
or buffalo the place?
Buffalo the animal.
Okay.
57km an hour they can run.
That's a lot.
That's like,
that's over the...
Do you see how bleak
is your weekend?
This is the one thing.
Is it a high or a low
or a buffalo?
Well, I feel like
none of us go buffalo
so I figured someone
needed to go buffalo.
Six and a half feet tall
wow wasn't it your birthday weekend yeah the greatest birthday wish i could ask for
learning about buffalo well there you go and it's what he did this weekend i'm gonna go
i went to coldplay again uh with my took my kids which was awesome um but then i thought
saturday on the morning sunday morning i'll have a sleep oh you know i'm gonna have to treat myself to sleep and i've been a big week bloody bird there's a bird i
don't know what sort of bird it is but it was like a you know just making a constant noise almost like
when the smoke alarm goes off and you're just like it's there and it's there and i just listen and
from early in the morning no one else in the house was like did everybody in the bird no one else did
everyone asleep winding me up there's probably some native bird
too what's the bird noise i'll try and record it because it was like yeah and i hadn't heard it
before but i was just like what is that noise what is that noise it's when you zero in on it yeah
yeah you wait for it yeah there it is again i woke my wife up she's like i can't hear it i'm like you
can hear it this is a guy sleeping is just not for him him resting is not for him clearly I was
like I've got to
rest guys I need
the rest
so what time did
you end up getting
up
I was after seven
so it was a little
bit more of a
sleeper than normal
so yeah
so that was my
it was Geese
it was kind of a
buffalo also a
love of the week
next
the hits
the Jono and
Ben podcast
it's just over a
month's time and
we're playing a fun
little game and
you can play along
to the Mariah
Carey game you just have to see how long you can play along to, the Mariah Carey game.
You just have to see how long you can go avoiding hearing
All I Want for Christmas from Mariah Carey.
To her rendition.
Yes.
So not any great covers like Ben's rendition.
Oh, jeez.
I don't want a lot for Christmas.
There is just one thing I need.
And I don't care about the presents.
Oh, God.
Okay, so you can listen to that.
I don't know why you'd want to, but you can listen to that.
Last week, we had Kaylee Bowen.
She's got a new single out called Cowboy Up.
It's a great country jam.
It's a great single, and we pitched it to her that she should get involved with the game.
I would love to play it.
You just have to let us know when you're out of the game.
At some stage, when you hear it, it might be scrolling through social media.
Oh, no, and then you're out.
But then you get to listen to it freely.
Yeah, that's right.
Okay, okay, okay.
Are you in on the game now?
Yeah, I'm totally in with this.
Okay, cool.
So the only condition is you need to let us know when you're out of the game, okay?
Yeah, cool, okay.
So that was on Friday.
Now, Kaylee Bell messaged us over the weekend.
She sent us a voice memo.
She's on tour at the moment with Kane Brown in Australia, but here's her message.
Hey, guys.
Well, I was very excited to play the Christmas game.
Love Christmas.
But I'd probably give it about an hour after I was on air with you guys,
jumped in the car, and a Christmas ad came on the radio.
And I was really sad.
She's out.
Because I knew my road to the game was done
And
I mean it's great now
Because I don't have to worry
About hearing the song
But
I just
I don't know how you guys
Are still in the game
I hear that song all the time
She's out
Well I'm out
I'm out too
You were scrolling through
Instagram were you
On Friday morning
Yeah coincidentally
After we just spoke to
Two people who were out
And I was like idiots
And then I started scrolling.
I don't know how I'm not out of the game because I fizz everything Christmas
and I haven't been actively trying to avoid it.
No, you say that every time.
You forget that you're playing the game.
Yeah, I just keep going to the supermarket and I'm like scrolling
haphazardly on social media, but I haven't heard it.
It's going to come for us this week.
Mariah's coming for us at some stage.
It's like COVID.
Remember when you were dodging COVID
for that sweet little period?
Have you got it?
No, no, no, no.
You're like, oh, it's just at the mall.
They were saying where people are.
It's a location of interest.
I heard Mariah.
After I left, they played it.
Also, the Farmers Santa Parade is this weekend.
Oh, we're all going to that.
If we don't hear it there.
It'll be a miracle.
A Christmas miracle.
It will.
Yeah.
That is the epicenter of Mariah Carey all over for Christmas.
We'll be running the gauntlet all day.
So 4487 on the text or 0800 the hits.
We'd love to know because it's your game too.
We'd love to know are you playing it and are you out or are you still in the game?
Because how long have you been playing it for?
I'm surprised you and I are still in it, Megan.
We spoke to Nicole who's our friend in the US.
She hosts a radio show in New York.
She had a personal experience with Mariah Carey,
who's a magnificent artist and also a well-publicized diva.
And she's got every right to be.
She's hugely successful.
But have a listen to this.
Oh, yes.
So Mariah Carey left us waiting for four hours.
And my boss never was like listen like you guys
this is disrespectful this is wrong like we our thing is like when people are late like you would
never be late for live television like why like this is not okay but it was like mariah so it was
like this big deal and it was late it was much later in the day so we're waiting we're losing
our minds we're like playing games we're trying to wait then they have everything come in like
like a big platter of all her favorite things and the whole thing they said this she has to have
this it's demanded that she has this just like almost like on a rider and backstage of a show
what are some of her favorite things that need to be on a planet it was like these special crackers
this like fruit plate it was like nothing that's special but like specifically catered to her. Right. She finally comes in like nothing, like she hasn't left us waiting.
Like it's no big thing.
Sits down, takes the platter, pushes it to the side and goes,
why is this here?
Like.
Oh, wow.
Really?
And it like fits on the ground.
Like she pushed it like, I don't want this crap here.
Four, I mean, four hours Is wildly behind schedule
Isn't it there
Well and so obviously
All she wanted for Christmas
Was not that platter
In that instance
All she wanted was you
She keeps saying it
She didn't want that platter
So there we go
You two keep going
You keep us alive
Alright
Amazing concerts
You would have seen it
All over social media
And the news as well.
In New Zealand, over 150,000 people got to experience Coldplay.
I wish they would never leave the country.
It was wonderful.
The country just seemed 15% happier when they were here.
And boy, oh boy, you really were flying from Christchurch on Friday.
And you go, the stimulation of the local economy.
Ben and Megan, I'm sure you would agree.
Everyone on the plane when we were flying back to Auckland
was going to Coldplay.
Everyone was.
Everyone.
Chris Martin just came over here and just sprayed stimulation
all over our economy.
It was so good to see.
Incredible concerts.
You were seeing the light-up armbands, everything like that as well.
And actually, after 8 o'clock this morning, he joined us before 7,
but we want to play it again.
Dylan Bode, he's from America.
He was in a coma, and Coldplay helped him out of the coma he got to sing with chris martin over the weekend
that was a champagne it says your music woke me up from a coma uh can we sing about this magic
together did you have any idea that chris martin would would pick you out from the crowd you know
i thought there was a slight chance but i didn't know for sure not and he's got an amazing story
uh and not only only being on stage with
Chris Martin but when he was
in a coma and how he came out of the coma.
He'll be with us just after 8 o'clock.
Bryn Rudkin does the news and the night
show here on The Hits. Now you've seen Coldplay
three times. Yeah.
I know and I'd see them again.
They are just so good. You'd go a fourth?
I would have happily gone to all three.
I went twice.
I was lucky enough to go through work on the first night
and then we'd bought tickets for the Saturday night
to take the kids.
Just incredible.
Like the best concert, hands down.
Absolutely.
They're such a great live band.
I am a bit obsessed with them,
but I actually don't listen to them a lot.
But I think they're just the best live band.
So many of their songs are just made for a live show, right?
You would save so much more money if you just did more listening to them
and less purchasing the concert tickets.
I know.
Well, actually, what I did do is I searched up their careers page.
I'm like, how do I join the tour?
How do I go?
Did you?
Yeah, yeah.
Have they got a careers page?
Job vacancies?
Jobs at Coldplay.
What's going?
Yeah, nothing.
I'm not surprised actually as well
the singer is
I think they might be
looking for an accountant
or something you know
I wouldn't put it past you
to learn accounting
to then go and join Coldplay
incredible spectacle
as I said before
with the light up bracelets
you've got confetti
you've got balloons
you've got fireworks
everything right
on the confetti
so I queued up
for six hours
outside the stadium
on Saturday
just so I could get as close to the stage as possible.
I managed to get right up front, and I was next to the confetti cannon.
I thought I was going to die.
That thing just went off nonstop.
Was it just blowing confetti in your face the whole time?
The whole night.
I feel like it was the last show of their tour this year.
I'm like, right, we've got – I think they were like,
we've got excess confetti.
Let's just get rid of it. We don't want to take any of it with us you'll be able to ask this
question for me though because it does go off multiple times in the show and it goes off with
different colors and stuff yeah is there someone like reloading it packing it in yeah and like
swapping out the um compressor tanks everything wow are you still pulling pieces of confetti
outside i have so much confetti They say it's biodegradable
So I'm going to do a wee bit of science
Of course
At home
I'm going to see how biodegradable it is
My husband ate some to make
He was like is it potato starch or something
It's not
It's not
I love it
They're like we can't take all this confetti back to England with us
Got to get rid of it
So six hours
That's a commitment
You've travelled to Perth to see them as well
Yes
A year ago today actually
Wow Yeah Has he ever paid to see them as well? Yeah, a year ago today, actually. Wow.
Yeah.
Has he ever paid to see you, Chris Murray?
No, but I think he did see me in the crowd very briefly.
Did he?
Yeah.
Did he give you a smile?
I think he did.
It might have been someone else, but I'll take it.
Thanks for taking the hit on all the confetti tonight, mate.
The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast.
The All Blacks losing a close one to France by one point over the weekend, 30 points to 29.
I saw they wore the white tops.
Yes.
And that harked back to when they lost the quarterfinal at the World Cup.
Maybe it's the white tops.
They're called the All Blacks.
It doesn't have the same mana.
It doesn't.
You're right.
Yeah.
But it's quite confusing if they play in their black and then France play in the really dark blue.
Plus a nightmare for grass stains as well. True. It's quite confusing if they play in the black and then, you know, France play in the really dark blue. It's like, yeah.
Plus a nightmare for grass stains as well.
True.
Nappy saying you'd have to get that out, wouldn't you?
Sorry, that was the wrong one.
It's time for the New Zealand Herald Daily Quiz with our,
now I feel like you've done this long enough, you deserve a title, like the Quiz Queen, the Quiz Mistress, the Quiztress, Quiz Khalifa.
What do we put here?
Quiz Queen?
Quiz Alifa?
Oh, yeah.
Quiz Alifa.
Alifa.
There we go.
Is that all right?
It's your name.
It's your name.
You roll it.
You're the judge.
All right.
The New Zealand Herald Daily Quiz.
There's 10 questions.
We try and get 10 in a row.
And to be honest, it's a bit of a roller coaster.
Sometimes we hit 10, sometimes we go out at one.
All right, question number one for a Monday.
What is New Zealand's most popular pet name in 2024?
Is it Luna?
Did you read the article?
I did.
Did you read the article?
It's Luna.
Oh, Luna.
Okay, lock it in.
That is correct.
There we go. Nice. I just thought that was a crazy. It's Luna. Luna. Okay. Lock it in. That is correct. There we go.
Nice.
I just thought that was a crazy wild guess from you.
Nah.
All right.
You claimed it.
It was good though.
One from one.
All right.
Question number two.
The Prado Museum, known for its Spanish art collection, is located in which city?
Is it Seville, Barcelona, or Madrid?
That's up to you guys.
I came in with number one.
Yeah, you did.
Before the options were even given.
I'm going to go Barcelona.
I feel like that's a place where you'd have an art museum.
Yeah, well, I guess it's, yeah, I'm sure they have one.
Yeah, so why not?
Is that your final answer?
Yeah, go on.
It's the final answer.
I'm committing to it.
That's incorrect.
That was Madrid.
Yeah, well, there we go. Oh, well, there we go.
Oh, well, that was surely.
I think I did my bit.
Yeah, you did.
Well done, Megan.
You did.
Thanks, Luna.
Not so well done, us, but there we go.
That's how it happens.
And you can play along at thenewzealandherald.co.nz.
You can continue to play.
Out of interest, what would we have done on the third question?
Just out of pure interest.
The next one was, Maroon 5's Moves Like Jagger features which female pop star?
Cardi B.
Beyonce, Rihanna, or Christina Aguilera?
Damn it.
So not great.
There's the answer.
What have you got on the next one?
Christina.
Is it Christina Aguilera?
I like how confident you were on that one as well.
Don't give yourself the
I got that right sound
She got it right again
And that's the New Zealand Herald Daily Quotes
We'll be back again tomorrow doing it
From the same time on the Hits
The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast
I was mentioning just before my daughter
She was scrolling through her social media
And it was one of those, I think they're automated
Voices where they're like,
you will never believe what this is about.
We haven't quite nailed that AI, have we,
with the presentation of those voices.
But it was a list of people who lived a lot longer
or died more recently than you think.
Rosa Parks, mentioned her three or four minutes ago.
Rosa Parks, she refused to
give up her seat on a bus to
a white passenger. This was on a
segregated bus where black people
and white people couldn't sit together. It was 1955
this happened. Huge
moment in civil rights.
She was still alive in
2004.
Well, she was very young, wasn't she, on the bus?
Yeah, 2004. So she would have been young, wasn't she, on the bus? Yeah, 2004.
So she would have been around for the premiere of Lost.
In 2004, she passed away.
Okay.
Now that's a lot more. I would have thought she was gone years.
Right, yeah.
You don't seem overly surprised.
No, just because I know that she was very young with that one.
So that one.
That one doesn't overly surprise me.
She would have been watching Shrek.
She would have seen Shrek.
I love that Lost and Shrek are your benchmarks. Toxic by Britney surprise me. She would have been watching Shrek. She would have seen Shrek. I love that lost in Shrek are your benchmarks.
Toxic by Britney Spears.
She would have heard Toxic.
Thank God.
Oh, that's good.
Okay.
Now here's a good one.
Pablo Picasso.
Yeah.
I thought he was like sort of Michelangelo era.
When do you think Pablo Picasso passed away?
1972.
70s.
Wow.
Oh, really?
Exactly. Who's alive wow. Oh, really? Exactly.
Who's alive the same time as you?
I thought it was the centuries.
He would have seen the Godfather.
I would have thought he would have outlived me, Pablo.
He would have seen the Godfather, Pablo Picasso.
What's the Godfather out there?
That was 1972.
Wow.
The Queen Mother.
Now, we all know when she died, but this is the span of what this lady saw.
She died.
She was pretty old, wasn't she, when she died?
2002, yeah.
So she was alive for Hitler and also Reese Witherspoon's motion picture masterpiece,
Sweet Home Alabama.
It's a great movie.
It's a great movie.
It is the broad spectrum of the Queen Mother's tenure.
She'd seen some stuff.
Yeah.
And, well, that was it.
I feel like these aren't that impressive.
Fading out on this now I've lost confidence.
The Picasso one was.
Did that impress you?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
All right.
Yeah.
The final one is woolly mammoths.
You know, woolly mammoths were still around when the Egyptians were building the pyramids.
Oh, but they went to die at the Ice Age.
Amen, brother.
Yeah, right.
Amen.
Okay.
Did that one impress you?
That one surprised me, yeah.
Yeah, good.
I got an eyebrow raised from it.
It did surprise me.
I wouldn't have thought they'd be still around by then.
Good.
That's all I yearn for.
How'd they die then?
Eh?
How'd they die then?
I didn't do any further research.
You researched buffalo a lot this morning, but not that.
The buffalo run 57 kilometres per hour.
We're playing a Mariah Carey game for Christmas.
You can play along too.
You can start right now.
It's fine.
All you have to do is try and avoid listening to Mariah Carey's All I Want for Christmas.
For as long as you can.
It needs to be Mariah's rendition of the song, her professional recording of it,
and not this one.
I don't want a lot for Christmas.
There is just one thing I need.
You know, I feel like this version has more character.
Charisma.
Yeah.
It makes me smile.
But yeah, Mariah's one.
Like a turd you just want to polish up,
but you enjoy the turd it's pretty
shocking and my singing so you can't listen to any other version you just can't listen to mariah's
if you're caught uh in a mall or a shop or on social media and you do hear it like jono was
on social media on friday and he was like i'm out yeah just it catches you completely unawares and
it's just like that you know it was a? Korean show we're all watching in lockdown?
Squid Game.
Squid Game.
Just brutally eliminated contestants.
And Kaylee Bell, country music superstar.
I'm going to call her a superstar.
She was playing along with us too.
She's like, damn right, I'm in.
She wanted to play.
And she was out as quick as she joined.
Hey, guys.
Well, I was very excited to play the Christmas game.
Love Christmas.
But I'd probably give it about an hour
after I was on here with you guys, jumped in the car and a Christmas ad came on the radio and
I was really sad because I knew my my road to the game was done and I mean it's great now because
I don't have to worry about hearing the song but I I just don't know how you guys are still in the game.
I hear that song all the time.
Bless her for listening to the radio.
It's the radio that got her out.
Yeah, but she's free from the shackles now.
I know.
She can just wander around.
Great song and peace.
Carefree.
I'm a little bit jealous, actually.
It's still in the game, but I'd love to listen to it.
It's like you guys trying to avoid paying tax The IRD will always
We'll catch up with you
At some point
And we do have a Santa parade this weekend
I know
The Farmer Santa parade
Which you're gonna
One of the floats
We've been that float in the past
That have had Mariah on loop
So we do have a Christmas song on the hits float
That's going on loop
But we've been guaranteed it's not Mariah
I hope so.
We need to get into that, don't we, at some stage?
Because I don't know.
I don't know.
We can't.
Or is that day exemption from it?
No.
No.
That is that Christmas day.
Okay.
Why don't we put like a space helmet or something over your heads?
I'll be wearing earmuffs the whole time.
Yeah, it might be cheaper than a space helmet.
Yeah, walking around.
Yeah, so I'll enter the hits. 4487, are you in or are you out of the game?
Scotty, you just phoned through.
In or out, buddy?
I'm out now, guys.
Yep.
My wife was yesterday just on the couch.
So I look at this video of these kids and there it was, right there.
Right there.
She got you out.
I don't do social media.
I don't listen to anything.
I just listen to the hits,
you know,
and it's like,
that's it.
I thought I would have lasted way longer.
Wow, Scott.
And that's the thing,
you know,
you do have that,
the stages of grief
I was talking about
before 8 o'clock.
Denial at first.
You're like,
no, this isn't,
surely this is not happening.
You know,
eventually you accept it
and go,
oh,
at least I'll get on
with my life now.
Yeah,
I threw her a bit of a tantrum
and she just didn't know
what I was talking about
pretend you didn't hear it
you don't understand
it's not how it works
though is it
it's an honesty policy
it is
the hits
the Jono and Ben podcast
now we are
in the midst of our
Mariah Carey
trying to avoid
listening to
All I Want For Christmas
the song
for as long as you can
and when you're out
you just come forth
with your honesty
transparency and honesty which you're and when you're out you just come forth with your honesty, transparency and honesty
which you're doing Katrina, are you out?
Yeah
You can hear the disappointment
Devastated mate
What happened?
How did you get caught?
I was just casually going through
TikTok
Yep, and Christmas food came up
and I was like, Oh I might watch this recipe
No I shouldn't have watched it
Shouldn't have watched
You know
And it hurts doesn't it
It does
I've felt the pain
I'm out
I'm in a week of mourning now
Yeah I'm sorry
But now again
As we keep saying
You can listen to it as well
And the commiseration version
For you
No no no
It makes it worse
I think
It's just like
It's hurt Yeah No no no I'm with It makes it worse, I think, Gay. It's just like,
it's hurt.
Yeah.
No, no, no, no. I'm with you.
I'm with you.
It's not for everyone.
It's air bleeding material.
Yeah, no, I'm with you.
I've no offence taken.
I'm the one singing it
because I agree.
I agree.
It's amazing to me
that people are so disappointed
by getting out
because there's no prize to this.
No, it's just like,
how long can you stick in?
How long can you stick in?
It's personal willpower, isn't it? And in the afternoon, we're playing with Maddie and PJ to introduce us to this. No, it's just like how long can you stick in? Personal willpower, isn't it? And in the afternoon
we're playing with Maddie and PJ too and producer Sarah.
Both Sarah and PJ are out.
Maddie McLean, the only one left standing
in the afternoon. Even after he was
accused of maybe being involved in a cheating
conspiracy with a listener
who had set up a fake burner account to try
and lure him in.
We're on Maddie's side. We believe he didn't
have the volume on.
And if he did,
well, then he's got to rest with that
for the remainder
of his days.
First, you're breaking
the rules of a Mariah Carey
competition.
Next thing,
you're human trafficking.
It's a slippery slope.
It really is.
You're right.
Now, we're going to get Joanne.
Joanne, you're on.
Hello.
In or out, Joanne?
I am still in,
and I have this thing in my head
that I'm actually subconsciously in the competition, but I'm not.
Oh, okay.
So I'm thinking, nah, I'm not in the competition.
I still go into supermarkets.
I still go into things.
I don't dare change radio stations.
That's just a big no-no.
Yeah, right.
And, yeah, so I'm
just consciously in it, but
I'm actually not. So,
yeah, I'm
just going about my daily business, and
I don't go on TikTok. I'm
not a TikTok girl. But that's a good
approach. Reckless. You're taking
the reckless approach. I think that's what I'm doing, too.
Just reckless abandon.
If you worry about it,
it's going to catch up with you.
Very good call, Joanne.
Appreciate that.
And Amanda.
Hi.
Are we still in the Mariah Carey comp?
I am still in.
Yes.
It is killing me too
because it's my favourite song.
My favourite Christmas song.
There's still plenty of time though.
It's the 18th of November.
37 days till Christmas.
Yeah. We've got a while. All my still plenty of time, though. It's the 18th of November. 37 days till Christmas. Yeah.
We've got a while.
All my Christmas decorations are still already up.
Oh, wow.
You've gone early.
You have gone early.
I really love Christmas.
Do you scroll TikTok, Instagram, social media?
No, I don't.
I scroll Facebook.
And nothing's popped up so far?
No, it hasn't popped up yet.
Well, Amanda, you keep going strong.
Kia kaha.
Do it for the rest of us.
Great text here.
4487.
Team, I have been dreaming about this competition.
I had a dream that I was listening to the hits in the car
and Mariah Carey came on and I woke up in a cold sweat.
That's the second person that's texted about a dream.
That was Wendy.
We're getting into people's dreams.
It's subconscious.
I know. I'm a duty manager at a Wendy and another. We're getting into people's dreams. Subconscious.
I know.
I'm a duty manager at a pub, and me and the team are still all in in Nelson.
There we go.
We'll keep our up to speed.
Megan and myself, we're still on it, but I feel like one of us or both of us will fall this week.
