The John O'Benn and Megan podcast, thanks to HelloFresh, your home advantage for delicious midweek dinners everyone will love.
Hey, welcome to the podcast. Very special podcast today, as you would have heard.
Well, yeah, we're live from Fiji, which has been incredible.
The whole journey getting Christy and George married over the past week really ramped things up yesterday, as you'll hear on the podcast.
In 24 hours, we went from New Zealand to getting married at Fiji at sunset.
What do you prefer the time was?
Because it's like 9 o'clock now when we're recording this NZT.
Yeah.
8 o'clock FJT.
I kind of like FJT.
Yeah.
But then that does mean you get up earlier,
but then you have more time.
Did we get up...
I don't know.
I'm very confused.
We got up earlier Fiji time, but it's normal time. Did we get up here? I don't know, I'm very confused. We got up earlier Fiji time,
but it's normal time.
For us. It seems to me like I had to
sleep it. This is riveting chat.
No, but I can't get my head around
the time zone. We'll work this out after
the podcast. Can I bring in Sonia
who's sitting here very politely from Tourism
Fiji and just say thank you so much
for everything you've done for the hits,
for us, and also for George and Christy over the last couple of weeks.
Honestly, it's been an absolute pleasure.
Obviously, working with you guys is fun and fantastic,
but I couldn't have been happier for the happy couple.
They're the perfect people,
and it's just great for us to be able to showcase how amazing Fiji is,
how close to New Zealand it is, and
how many amazing opportunities there are here for people, especially those who want to get
married.
Well, watching the service happen yesterday and how they were working together, you know,
with the music, with people, they were practising opening the doors before, you know, Christy
arrived in unison.
It was just, nothing was, you know, it was incredible.
Yeah, I mean, the Outrigger Resort does an amazing job of weddings.
They have a lot of weddings every year,
and they've got it down pat.
But the Fijian people themselves are the most welcoming,
wonderful people.
So no matter where you go, they're going to make your holiday
or your time in Fiji just so special.
I love it when you get off the plane, you go out of the airport
and they're like, welcome home
it's like, oh, okay, I can stay here
we can live here, you can definitely live here
you do that in America, they're like, get back on the plane
get out of here
but it's been a beautiful 48 hours
thank you so much
the time zone thing
Sonia, have we
slept in or have we got up earlier?
Technically, do you think? I think you've
got up at the normal time.
But what's the normal time?
I can't get my head around it.
I cannot.
Do we have more sleep or less sleep?
I'm kind of glad that this is on the podcast.
There was no traffic. We didn't have to go
we walked, you know, that's very helpful.
Now, sorry to Dogleg as well.
We just, you know, the wonderful people here at Outrigger just said,
oh, would you like a coffee?
And we said, yes, absolutely.
Oh, it's been incredible here setting up our whole radio, you know,
studio, little studio in the boardroom today as well.
Yeah.
It was awesome.
And it went flat white, flat white.
Then Megan.
No, you were like, oh, I'll have this.
And then Ben will have this.
And then you were like, Megan, what will you have? And I was like, what will you have and I was like what will I have Jono? Well I've never really kept
Megan's coffee order. You have definitely got my coffee. Flat white with coconut milk. Now
over here listen now you can introduce yourself mate to the audience what's your name?
Now he's done a wonderful job. Both of you have got terrible mic technique.
And you, Jono.
You use it all the time.
It's not really.
Sorry, can we grab your headphones?
Sorry, Sonia.
Now this is the first thing.
No, put your headset on, Jono. Yeah, we can't hear you at all.
We can hear you, but no one on the podcast can hear you.
Did the mic just stop working?
No, you can't hear it.
It's right by your mouth.
He said this is the first time
he's ever heard anyone
putting coconut milk in a coffee.
That's very true.
And how do you feel about it?
Because there's a lot of coconuts around here.
Yeah, it is.
You guys are big fans.
I mean, we, sorry,
myself, I like drinking vodka,
coconut water.
Vodka with coconut water?
Blue turtle gin with coconut water. Blue turtle gin with coconut water.
Blue turtle gin?
But coffee with coconut milk?
Mate.
Well, I don't know where we're taking alcohol orders.
I can give you one of those too.
Do you know, in New Zealand, we're making all sorts of wild milk.
We've got almond milk.
You hear almond milk?
Milk from oats?
Oat is fine.
There you go.
Okay, but coconut milk?
No.
Coconut milk, first time.
First time?
Don't.
I think after this, I'll ask my barista to make me one.
Try it.
Yeah, don't knock it until you try it.
It might be your new fave.
But the thing is, I have to report back to work tomorrow.
I hope I don't get an upset stomach.
Well, thank you for your help today.
No worries, thank you.
Thanks again to Tourism Fiji, Sonia as well.
Jono, Ben and Megan.
The podcast.
The hits.
Live from the Abraga Fiji Beach Resort.
Jono, Ben and Megan on the hits.
Hola.
Hola, good morning.
Wow, it's been an eventful 24 hours, hasn't it?
It really has.
George and Christy, two police officers from Rotorua,
they've been engaged for four years.
We said we're going to send you over to Fiji,
thanks to Fiji Tourism, to Elope.
They came to Auckland yesterday for their dress fitting
and their suit fitting, and then, boom,
classic commercial radio surprise, ambush.
So they knew they were getting married in Fiji,
we just didn't really specify when it was actually happening, Megan.
And the fact that we would all be going on the plane in our wedding attire.
Yeah, so the whole day they got into their wedding attire, the dress, the suit,
and they had to spend the whole day until they got married in their wedding outfits.
Yes, that includes going on the plane in dresses and suits with everyone looking at you
and being like, what is happening?
It has been a whirlwind of the last 24 hours.
My body hasn't been through as much.
I haven't done more.
I've done more in 24 hours than I've done in 42 years.
Do you know the biggest miracle is that Jono didn't spill the beans?
Well, yeah, true.
There was a couple of moments.
Yeah.
Yeah, there was a whole lot of twists and turns, a whole lot of surprises on the way.
But here was the first big surprise.
So, Jono, the two of us,
we went down to Barkers, and
George was in his suit,
getting prepared for the wedding, and we surprised him
with the fact we're going to Fiji
that day, yesterday, to get married.
Wow.
That's a lot to take in. The electric reaction.
Can we come? Yeah, of course you can.
Thank God you said yes, because we've
already booked the flights.
You're getting married at first flight, George.
We're off now to Fiji to get married.
It's all speechless.
It's a lot to take in.
It is a lot to take in.
And I went with Christy.
That's the most you're going to get out of George, by the way.
We were working our asses off.
He's awesome.
He's amazing.
But yeah, it was...
He's a man of few words.
Compare George's reaction to Christy's reaction. So's amazing. But yeah, it was... He's a man of few words. Compare George's reaction
to Christy's reaction.
So this is when you
surprised Christy, Megan.
So I went with Christy
to Yours Truly by Trish Peng,
beautiful store,
to pick out her dress
and she's wearing the dress
that she chose
and I told her
that we're hopping on a plane
to go to Fiji to get married.
That's insane.
So am I wearing this on the plane?
Really?
If it makes you feel any better, I'm wearing a dress.
The boys are wearing their suits.
We all look like a...
Are you guys coming with us as well?
We are coming with you.
Let's go.
Great.
Great.
More energy than George.
He's a bit overwhelmed.
But it's...
Yeah, now we're in Fiji.
And over the next three hours,
we're going to bring you up to speed with what has happened.
You can follow it too on,
so we're going to upload some social media.
Yeah, across social media.
Now that we're here, we can actually tell you
what has gone on over the last 24 hours
involved helicopters, planes, transfers,
a whole lot of getting out of the way
of some really rough weather as well,
but we got it all done.
A naked, greasy man with great abdominals as well.
We don't want to know about what you do in your spare time.
Jono, Ben and Megan.
The podcast.
The hits.
We are sitting in the Buller boardroom at the Outrigger.
We are still in our suits and waiting in time.
Well, the two of us are.
We're all like, hey, we should turn up in the morning
and our suits from the wedding.
It'll look funny.
Yeah, Megan hasn't committed to the bits. I'm like, why are you dressing in a bag? And I all like, hey, we should turn up in the morning and our suits from the wedding. It'll look funny. Yeah.
Megan hasn't committed to the bits.
No.
I'm probably dressed in a bag.
And I was like, actually, I'll get changed and we can do a funny photo.
I wore that thing for the longest time.
I'm not going to spend another second in it.
Well, yeah, we did.
We stayed in our wedding attire all through yesterday because it was an epic day going
from the studio in Auckland trying to get to George and Christy married in Fiji.
No greater way to draw attention to yourself in an airport than walking through there with
a bride and groom and us in our wedding attire as well.
Really all eyes on you.
I loved it.
It has been an incredible journey and we wanted to bring you up to speed with not just yesterday
but the whole couple of weeks as we got to know George and Christy and prepared their wedding to get married at first flight in Fiji.
How would you like to get married in Fiji?
Oh, my God.
That would be amazing.
I would love that.
George.
Gorgeous George.
George.
Will you do the honours of marrying me in Fiji?
Oh, s***.
Okay.
I can't believe it.
George got down on one knee,
but then he freaked out a bit
and pretended he was tying his shoe.
Good save, George.
Good save.
And then he came and sat next to me again
and then kind of was like,
oh, yes, so will you marry me?
And then we got up and had this big hug
and I was crying
and then this random lady
interrupted us and asked us if we could move
out the way so she could walk past
and she didn't want to get to see us.
George, if you could describe Christy in three
words, what would they be?
Cheerful, beautiful and loving.
Oh, that is lovely.
Christy, what are your three words
for George?
Hilarious, thoughtful
and gorgeous.
Michael here from Diamonds on Richmond.
We just want to look after you guys and help you out
to give you a couple of rings there
for your big wedding day.
Sorry, I'm already crying.
Thank you so much.
Hey George, to kind of
keep you in the gorgeous
George state of mind,
we'd like to get you into parkas, do a little bit of a fitting,
and make sure you're suited and booted.
Oh, wow. Really?
Hey, mate.
Really blown away by you guys, man.
Thank you so much for helping us out.
I am Trish Peng.
I am a wedding dress designer and the founder of Trish Peng and Yours Truly.
And we would love to gift you your very own wedding dress.
Oh, my gosh.
Oh, sorry.
Oh, wow.
To be perfectly honest, I never even dreamed that I'd actually have a proper wedding dress.
Like, if we were getting married, like, that just didn't seem like.
Oh, I'm going to cry.
Oh, that's awesome.
Thank you so much.
Oh, pleasure. I love love. Sorry, I'm going to cry. Oh, that's awesome. Thank you so much. My pleasure.
I'm sorry.
I'm going to ugly cry.
George and Christy, they're getting married,
and they're in the studio.
We're meeting you guys for the first time.
Great to have you in there.
Thank you for having us.
Now that you're here, and we're doing fittings today and stuff,
how are you feeling?
I don't know how we're even going to explain that.
It's just crazy, yeah.
We were talking about it last night when we got here,
and we were just like, it's actually real.
Like, this is really happening.
We're going through the motions now.
This is really cool.
What I can't believe is, what, less than seven days ago,
this wasn't even on the agenda.
Yeah.
We were looking forward to work and stuff.
George actually came up to the brief on Valentine's Day,
and then I was feeling very, like, loved, I guess.
And then I was scrolling on Facebook
and I saw that competition and I was like,
oh my God, like, let's do this.
You picked out the rings last night.
Yes.
Thanks to Diamonds on Richmond for that.
And they're perfect.
So it's been a bit of a frantic week, to be honest,
trying to organise rings, suits, dresses,
and thanks to Barkers and Trish Peng as well.
Found out from Megan. You're a prominent player in the wedding dress game, suits, dresses. And thanks to Barkers and Trish Peng as well. Found out from Megan.
You're a prominent player in the wedding dress game, old Trish.
I found out from everyone too.
They were like, do you realise?
And I was a little bit starstruck talking to her on the phone.
I was like, who's Trish?
Trish Peng.
I just thought it was a lovely lady named Trish and she was lovely.
What are you most looking forward to about being married to each other?
I don't know.
I'm just excited for their extra level of commitment and love.
And I don't know.
Let's call you my husband.
I think I want to marry you.
They are the most beautiful couple, George and Christy.
It's been amazing to get to know them over the last couple of weeks.
And yesterday was one epic day when we surprised them with the fact that we're getting married in Fiji.
By the end of the day, it involved helicopters,
it involved planes, it involved a race against time and weather.
A lot of tears.
And a lot of tears, you're right.
A lot of tears.
Bring you up to speed.
That was just for me.
Jono, Ben and Megan, the podcast.
The heads.
There was a sour little Ben voice as we were in the airport.
You're travelling the whole way.
I don't want to look sour because this has been an incredible experience
thanks to Tourism Fiji.
And I want to say I'm not being ungrateful for the fact
that we got this opportunity.
But we were going, well, all week I've been like going,
oh, these people going to the Warriors game in Las Vegas.
I love the Warriors.
The universe has been taunting you on social media
with all of their footage and content.
They're like, look at us at the dome.
People from work are going along as well.
You're going along.
People are texting me.
I'm like, no, I'm not going.
I'm not going.
Why do you seem so aggrieved by other people going?
I'm just jealous of these people.
And as if they couldn't rub it in your face anymore, yesterday at the airport was just
a sea of Warriors merch.
It was like Where's wally except with warriors colors
yeah so many people going to the game in las vegas and everyone will come up like are you guys off to
vegas are you just going to be like no we're going to be jesus we're going to be here that's how you
said it feel sorry for me i'm going to and then i'll get you like he's the most depressed person
i've ever seen go to feed him a lot yeah and it is incredible don't get me wrong but you're like, he's the most depressed person I've ever seen go to Fiji in my life. Yeah, and it is incredible, don't get me wrong.
But you're right, we ran into so many Warriors fans, and here's just a couple of them.
So now, the collateral of being at the airport, Ben, is that the Warriors trip is being rubbed in your face.
Oh yeah, I'm not going.
I mean, great, we're going to Fiji, but you guys are going to the Warriors.
Yes, we're going to the Warriors, yes.
It's always good to go to Vegas as well, but you can't miss a good wedding, though.
You're in so many people here in Warriors, excited about the game.
It's going to be incredible.
It's going to be awesome.
Absolutely awesome.
We've been a year in the planning.
Really?
So how long has the wedding been in the planning?
At least seven days.
Is it a shotgun wedding?
How many of you
are going over?
Six of us.
Oh, six of us.
Now, are you
up to us people
or are you not up to us people?
We're up to us.
We're up to us people.
Yeah, great.
I'm not a plastic warrior.
How do you think
we're going to go
on Sunday though,
the Raiders?
Well, Sunday,
New Zealand time.
How are we going to go?
The Raiders have
shot themselves in the foot.
They've already started
fighting amongst each other
the Warriors are gonna kick ass yeah we'll be up by 20 26 points
unfortunately that's what happens when you send NRL players to Las Vegas
what's the other plan outside of the Warriors game what's one thing you're
gonna do in Vegas? The Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Shooting Guns, Michael Jackson sir
We might try and squeeze in a titty bar as well
Just one
Enjoy the trip guys, enjoy the trip
Can I get a photo?
Yeah of course
Shall I put it in? I can hold up my selfie, shall I?
We want you guys on.
Did he run to know they asked?
Awesome.
Thank you.
I'm very jealous of those Warriors fans.
People are going to be there this weekend.
So up the wars on Sunday.
Apologies, that audio should have finished about 30 seconds earlier.
I'm going to go and get my phone.
I'm going to go and get my phone.
I'm going to go and get my phone.
I'm going to go and get my phone.
I'm going to go and get my phone.
I'm going to go and get my phone.
I'm going to go and get my phone.
I'm going to go and get my phone.
I'm going to go and get my phone.
I'm going to go and get my phone.
I'm going to go and get my phone.
I'm going to go and get my phone. I'm going to go and get my phone. I'm going to go and get my phone. I'm going to go and get my phone. I'm going to go those Warriors fans. People are going to be there this weekend.
So up the wires on Sunday.
Apologies, that audio should have finished about 30 seconds earlier.
Jono, Ben and Megan.
The podcast.
The heads.
George, Christy, we've got to know them over the last couple of weeks.
Been engaged for four years.
Have, for various reasons, not got married.
So we decided to make it our mission to get them married in paradise here in Fiji.
Surprise, yeah.
It has happened.
We surprised them yesterday by getting them in their wedding attire and then jumping straight on a plane.
Yeah, it was a lot to take in as we surprised them yesterday that we're going to get married by the end of the day.
Okay, we're about to go into Barker's.
George is getting changed.
And I'm actually a little nervous.
We're going to surprise him with a big surprise.
So many surprises. You didn't think about the ascenders for a few seconds. No, no, no. I'm nervous. I'm nervous. How nervous. We're going to surprise him with a big surprise. So many surprises.
You didn't think about this?
No, no, no, I'm nervous, I'm nervous.
How's he going to react?
Walking through the shop now and he's here.
He's looking good.
You look good, lovey.
Who's the lads? How are we going?
Classic black suit looks great.
Yeah, I'll stick with the traditional way.
You look fantastic, George.
I tell you what, you couldn't think you could get more gorgeous, Ben.
Gorgeous George is the name that stuck, right? Do you need a hand? You're fantastic, George. I tell you what, you couldn't think you could get more gorgeous, Ben. Yeah, gorgeous George is the name that stuck, right?
Do you need a hand? You're all good?
We're just gonna wait here. You just show us when you're ready.
We're ready.
I'll do a grand reveal. Ready? 3, 2, 1.
Ah!
Oh, fuck.
I didn't know I had Mum and dad here. Oh wow.
Thank you.
You look amazing.
I think you need some wine.
Now we must admit we've screwed up your wedding planners.
We've had our heads elsewhere.
Now I don't want to say anything about the wedding.
I think it's a bit too much.
I think it's a bit too much.
I think it's a bit too much.
I think it's a bit too much.
I think it's a bit too much.
I think it's a bit too much.
I think it's a bit too much.
I think it's a bit too much.
I think it's a bit too much.
I think it's a bit too much.
I think it's a bit too much. I think it's a bit too much. I think it's a bit too much. I think it's a bit too much. I think it's some wine. Now, we must admit we've screwed up. Your wedding plan is...
We've had our heads elsewhere.
Now, I don't want to overwhelm you even more, but...
Now, you're getting married in Fiji.
Tick, right?
We didn't tell you, though, you're getting married today.
Once this dress is fitted and sewn,
we are going straight to the airport.
Oh, wow.
And you're getting married today in Fiji.
You're getting married at first flight.
Wow.
Yeah, that's a flop.
Take it.
We're in a bit of a time crunch
because we are going straight to the airport
and today is your wedding day.
That's insane!
So am I wearing this on the plane?
Yes.
Can we come?
Yeah, of course you can.
Oh, yeah.
Thank God you said yes because we've already booked the flights
if it makes you feel any better i'm wearing a dress the boys are wearing their suits
we'll look like him are you guys coming with us as well
wow there we go you can kind of remember some of this it was a lot we've done a lot over the
last 24 hours and uh throughout the, we'll bring you up to speed
with the adventure to get them married in Fiji
at the end of the day.
It was pretty incredible.
And Mum there as well, Megan, with the dress fitting?
Yeah, so we surprised Mum and Dad were there.
It was perfect timing.
She went behind the curtain, put on her first dress.
She was opening the curtain to do a reveal.
It was just me and Trish
Ping, the designer, and her parents who had snuck in.
And she was just a bit overwhelmed, but very grateful that her mum could have that moment
with her.
Oh, that's amazing.
A funny story about the parents.
So we've gone way over time probably, but they were staying at a hotel, George and Christy,
but we had put the parents up at the hotel next door and the people in the hotel next
door were like, hey, would you like an upgrade? We can put you in our new hotel, which is the same hotel as Christy, but we had put the parents up at the hotel next door, and the people in the hotel next door were like, hey, would you like an upgrade? We can put you in our new hotel,
which is the same hotel as Christy and George. And they were like, no, we do not want an upgrade.
They did not get an upgrade. They said the lady behind the desk was like, I think this is the
first person in history who has vehemently denied an upgrade. Well, you don't want an upgrade.
Well, that's the reason why it was a beautiful moment and we'll have more of it throughout the morning, but
next, Megan, we learned something about you yesterday
on the flight. Yeah, there is something that I find
quite terrifying on the flight. It's not
turbulence. I'm with you. I'm with you.
You are? Yeah. Okay.
You are? Yeah. Okay.
John O'Bannon, Megan. The podcast.
The hits. Now we are in Fiji,
broadcasting live bullet from the
boardroom. Yeah. Can I say this live bullet from the boardroom.
Can I say this is the most amazing boardroom I've ever been in because look out the window.
It has like view of palm trees.
We can see the ocean.
We can see the sunrise.
It's pretty epic, isn't it?
It is beautiful.
It's an epic way to start our day.
It's been an epic 24 hours all thanks to tourism Fiji.
Yeah, but it did involve a plane flight, obviously, to get here yesterday.
Yeah, we had to take George and Christy from Rotorua
who didn't know they were getting married yesterday
on a plane. And Megan,
one thing that terrifies you about planes.
Well, I don't like turbulence, but it's not the
turbulence per se. It's when you
go to the toilet,
you're in that tiny little confined
space, and then you have to flush
the toilet.
First of all, where does that go?
Don't think too hard. One of the last things.
And it sucked me in.
I reckon it could suck a fully grown adult in.
That is the suction power of 420 Dyson's that thing.
Yeah, but I don't know what it is because you're in like that little confined space
and then you press the button.
You know it's coming too, right?
But there's a pause. You have to wait, like you push it and you wait and then it's like
yeah it feels like technology has advanced in so many aspects of our lives but not with the
plane toilet well you look at the humble domestic flush yeah very you know peaceful yeah a slight
wash not that one that scares the crap out of me always try and flush it
and run
so this was me
confining the toilet yesterday
okay
I like
press flush
and then I run
here we go
get me out of here
does that
does that
quite as bad as can I say the iPhone probably did me dirty because of the noise reduction situation.
Yeah, we probably shouldn't have played that.
If anything it was fine.
I snuck into the business class toilet and I looked at John and I was like, am I allowed
in here?
He's like, yeah, it's fine.
It's fine.
But it did say business class passengers only.
So maybe they have like new toilets in there.
A better class of waste going down there.
Do you think the wonderful staff on Fiji Airways were like,
why is that lady talking to herself in the toilet?
She's like giving herself motivation.
A little pep talk.
You can do it.
You can do it.
Oh, here it comes.
Here it comes.
It's a bit quieter than normal. I was in there for such You can do it. You can do it. Oh, here it comes. Here it comes. It's a bit quieter than normal.
I was in there for such a long time because I wanted to record it.
And as soon as I got in there, they played like this biosecurity announcement.
And I was like, I'm trying to record audio, guys.
Jono, Ben and Megan.
The podcast.
The hits.
Now, of course, we've been on this epic journey to get George and Christy married.
We told them yesterday morning they were going to get married in Fiji.
By the end of the day, that was our promise to them.
And it involved us in their wedding outfits, getting on the plane with them.
And then because it was getting close to getting nightfall, we were like, we need to get them on a helicopter ride.
Because it was a sunset wedding.
And anyone who's had a wedding as well, you've got to get the photos done before it gets dark.
We were on a real time crunch.
But the one thing you can't control on a schedule
is the weather. Yeah.
There was a severe weather system coming in.
Cyclones they were talking about.
And we got to the helicopter
place. Very charming, dapper
British gentleman. It was
like we were in a military operation.
He was like, right, we need to get you out there. I won't do the accent
because that would be controversial. We need to get you out there. I won't do the accent because that would be controversial.
We need to get you out there.
We need to beat the weather.
If you don't get there, he's going to might have to turn around and come back.
And it's the pilot's call.
No one questions the pilot.
I'm like, yes.
Yeah.
So the people at the Island Hoppers helicopter place is, well, yeah, they were getting to
get us there.
And I'm a little nervous.
I'm a little nervous at the best of times, to be honest, guys.
But when there's a weather system coming through and they're talking about, well, it's on the pilot's call, which is great, experienced pilot.
But when they say, well, we'll give it a go.
Yeah, they did say, they said, we'll give it a go.
If you hit some weather, we can always turn around and come back.
But the give it a go made Ben very nervous.
I came up to our boss, Matt, DJ Mando, and I said, I don't know if I like give it a go.
I don't love give it a go.
I just bought in the exact words where you leaned into me and said, I don't love give it a go.
I don't love give it a go.
No, I don't love give it a go.
But give it a go is the attitude that you need when you're hopping into a helicopter.
It's the can-do attitude that'll get you there.
So as this weather system was coming through, were you ever going to try and take some photos of them outside?
Yeah, well, that was their first time in a helicopter,
so I was like, stand in front of the helicopter,
I'll get a photo, and that's when our boss comes running out.
That's because I had James Bond screaming at me,
get them in the air.
You're like, we need to go now, we need to go now.
Go now, go now.
To the chopper.
And so we got on board,
and here is the star of us inside the chopper.
So we're sitting in the helicopter.
Hi Drama, it's a race against time.
The cyclone's coming in.
Will we make it to the venue in time?
I tell you what a perfect mode of transport is for this weather.
Ah, helicopter.
How's everyone feeling?
Fantastic.
This is absolutely crazy.
Yeah, it is.
Do you know, after we did that, didn't the pilot say, silence, please?
Silence, please, yeah.
And then he keeps recording stuff.
He's like, what, five minutes of silence?
I'm like, give the guy five minutes of silence.
I get Jono commentating in the back.
So the helicopter's taking off.
Megan's worried about some life admin.
Now, this is your first time in a helicopter?
It is.
Great weather to debut in.
Are you feeling nervous, Ben?
Oh, look, the worry meter is very high right now for me.
If I'm honest, me and Ben have exchanged a few glances.
But hey, professional, you know what you're doing.
He's going to make a call if we can't get all the way through.
It's fine.
Robin's chill as. He's a true pro, aren't you, what you're doing. He's going to make a call if we can't get all the way through. That's fine. Robin's chill as.
He's a true pro, aren't you, Robin?
We'll soon find out.
I love that.
We'll soon find out.
Now, Robin was incredible.
An amazing pilot from Island Hoppers.
What makes you more nervous?
We'll give it a go or we'll soon find out.
It's going up in the air.
There was a horrible system that we had to fly through
for about five minutes where we couldn't really see anything.
For me, that was a bit traumatising.
I looked at Megan.
We literally were in pea soup.
Like, we could not see any reference to land.
But he was talking to the control tower,
and I did actually feel very comfortable with his experience.
Do you think they made it out alive?
Well, let's have a listen.
Say sorry, Megan.
My life insurance, I haven't paid it yet.
If anyone's listening from AIA,
what are you, Southern Cross?
Partners Life.
Partners Life.
Just renew the insurance now.
Put that payment through, please.
You made it.
We made it.
Woo, go, Robert.
Woo, go, Robert. Go, Robin.
Yeah, Robin.
And it turns out Robin wasn't professional. He was like, don't let my baby face fool you.
Yeah, he did.
He said that.
It was incredible.
So thank you to the wonderful people at Island Hoffers for getting us here safely.
It was an epic experience on our way to get George and Christy married.
John O'Benn and Megan, the podcast, the hits.
We had them on the plane, George and Christy, they were in their wedding attire as well.
We had a wee surprise for them over the loudspeaker from the pilot.
That is officially in the air today at 40,000 foot.
Please welcome Christy and George on board, who today were surprised by John O'Benn and Megan
from the Hits Radio station.
To get suited up in wedding attire,
they'll be getting married in Pigeon today.
Christine and George, we wish you a lifetime of love,
laughter and zero achievements in your marriage.
And to everyone else on board,
please join us in giving a round of applause
to our soon-to-be new guests.
You gay got a laugh.
Yeah, can I say, because we were like,
can you write something for the pilot to say?
I've expected more from the zero turbulence in the marriage shit, you know?
You wanted more.
Ben hit my arm and he was like, yep.
It was a plane where the people gave nothing to that.
There was a modest laugh.
Solid material.
Yeah, I mean, it's a cold-ass audience on a plane.
Yeah, they're not expecting comedy, are they?
Shout out to that pilot, too.
I think maybe the first pilot in aviation history where you could understand every word he was saying.
Beautiful, clear diction in delivery.
Yeah.
We'll have the wedding for you after 8 o'clock this morning,
and we're going to have George and Christy come and join us
live on the air to talk and reflect on their wedding day
and maybe the wedding night.
How much detail can we get into, Megan?
What?
I don't know.
But we do have a little surprise for them as well.
Jono, Ben and Megan.
The podcast.
The hats.
It's been an incredible, well, a couple of weeks
with getting someone married at first flight.
We had this idea with Tourism Fiji to send someone who was engaged to Fiji
to get married in tropical paradise here at the Outrigger Hotel in Fiji to send someone who was engaged to Fiji to get married in tropical paradise here
at the Outrigger Hotel in Fiji.
Yeah, and we blindsided the wonderful Christy and George, who are two police officers.
Yesterday they were at their fittings, and we said, these aren't just their fittings
for the dresses and the suits.
This is your wedding day.
Hop on a plane.
We're coming with you.
It's all go.
Whirlwind of a 24 hours.
We're still in the same clothes for god's sakes
and they are joining us in the bullet boardroom this morning good morning congratulations christy
and george thank you how are you feeling good great yep does it feel surreal the last because
it feels surreal for us you know both helicopters planes you guys traveling in your suits and your
dress it's it's surreal for us.
It is very much surreal.
Yep, that's a great word for this.
Well, we're going to take you through and we can recap together.
It's like the hangover, isn't it?
We wake up and we're like, what just happened the last 24 hours?
But this was moments before you got married, I think, Megan.
You were travelling together up on a golf cart.
I was the lone bridesmaid.
And, yeah, we got a little buggy up to
the 360 degree chapel view but this was us riding up a very special moment just before the wedding.
You look stunning. Thank you. I don't even know how to put what I feel in words like everything's, this whole day has been like incredible and oh yeah we're coming to this part but it's just it's also overwhelming in the best possible way like don't get me wrong best possible way but it's just like.
Raining.
Stop raining.
I can see some, look there's sun over there oh my gosh.
Alright deep breaths let's go get you my gosh. All right, deep breaths.
Let's go get you married, girlfriend.
Yes, get married.
So, yeah, we were waiting in this wonderful chapel, top of a hill.
And I tell you what, get the bullet tissues out, Christy.
Get the bullet, bullet tissues out, baby.
Because here was your wedding. Thank you. So, Christy's standing at the door.
George has turned around.
Tears are flowing, Megan.
Oh, she looks beautiful.
She's very emotional, understandably.
Tears of joy streaming down her face
as she's walked in by two Fijian warriors
into this beautiful chapel on top of the hill,
360-degree view.
This is special
George, do you take Christine to be your loveful, well-wired wife
To love and respect her
Be honest with her through life, whatever may come
So you can happily share your life together
I do
Christine, do you
take George to be your
love-worthy husband, to
love and respect him,
be honest with him through life,
whatever may come, so you can
happily share your life together?
I do.
Since it is your intention to get married,
please face
each other as you say your vows.
I love how you embrace my weirdness.
You laugh at my really bad jokes and you eat all the pickles from my burgers.
You always know how to care and look after me, especially when I'm hungry or tired.
Whether it's feeding me or wrapping me up in your arms, you know exactly what to do and I appreciate you so much for it.
Thank you for cheering me on through all my crazy ideas, like entering insane contests.
Who knew that my wild entry would win us this incredible fairy tale winning accompanied
by these absolute legends.
Together we can take on anything, partners in solving crime and in love, ready for every adventure. I love you George and like yesterday and the day before I choose to love you today
and every day to come knowing knowing that with you, every
moment will be an adventure worth starting.
We started as best friends nine years ago, now we've come all this way. I just want to
say I love you. And I promise to look after you and protect you. And hopefully're a good husband. Sorry, my vowels. They are sharp and sweet, just like you.
So, I love you.
I love you too.
Thank you so much.
For the first time ever,
Miss Mo and Miss Israel!
Woo!
Woo!
Woo! Woo! Woo! So there we go.
That was the wedding.
What's it like hearing that back, Christy?
There's a few tears.
I mean, people sit around and watch their wedding videos,
but not many people sit around and listen to their wedding.
It's been an intense session.
And you said to me afterwards as well, you're like,
I have no idea what just happened, which is often the case.
You say the vows, you're like, I don't know what I said.
I don't know what happened.
Oh, it was beautiful.
We need to talk more about the last 24 hours very shortly.
And I know it's been 24 hours of surprises.
You know, you didn't know you were getting married.
You didn't know you were going to be on a helicopter. You didn't know you were coming to this resort. You didn't know we were coming, too. You didn't know you were getting married. You didn't know you were going to be on a helicopter.
You didn't know you were coming to this resort.
Didn't know we were coming, too.
Didn't know we were coming.
We've got one more big surprise to tell you about very shortly.
Jono, Ben and Megan.
The podcast.
The hits.
You guys are loping.
You've eloped in Fiji with us yesterday, which is pretty incredible. But obviously some family and friends could be with you for this.
But what we have is some messages from your family and friends,
from your sis Tanya, from Lionel, your dad, Rosemary, your nana,
your brother, Ethan.
I haven't even played the messages yet, mate.
I haven't even played the messages.
We're reading our names.
So here is some words from your loved ones.
Hey, little sis, Christy, and Mr. George.
Hey, sorry we cannot be there today for your special day.
However, the HITS team didn't invite us.
Ha ha.
Hey, there's beautiful Maori whakatauke that is used often in ceremonies,
so I thought it's appropriate.
Blessing for both of you, the beautiful couple in your future marriage,
and also acknowledging our whenua.
So it goes as,
And it means may the calm be widespread, may the surface of the
ocean glisten like the
greenstone, and may the
shimmer of summer dance across your
path forever. Dad will be looking
down on you today, saying
yep, he's the right boy for my
girl. We always say how Dad
orchestrates things amongst his
heavenly adventures. This wedding
gift literally fell from the heavens.
Even when Jono rang the wrong guy instead of TJ,
it was a guy named Tony, which is of course Dad's name.
Simply amazing, just like you.
Te aroha, te aroha.
Lovers love sis.
Wishing you both a fabulous wedding day.
We'll be here when you get back to party.
We love you both infinite and beyond.
Cheers.
Love yous.
Hey, so this is a shout out to our son George
and our soon to be new daughter-in-law, Christy.
All the best getting married over in Fiji.
You're really, really lucky people.
And you know we love you fellas.
Me and mum, we give you all our love.
Have a good time over there.
Hello, Christy and George. You know we love you fellas. Me and Mum, we give you all our love. Have a good time over there.
Hello, Christy and George.
My favourite granddaughter and her lovely husband-to-be.
We are very happy for you both.
We wish you a wonderful time in Fiji and a very happy wedding.
Lots of love from Nana and Papa.
Hey, Christy and George.
Just want to wish you guys both the happiest of days.
Christy, you're not just my sister.
You're my best friend.
Forget that TJ guy.
And I'm so happy that you're so happy and found somebody who's made you this happy.
George, I'm proud to call you my brother,
especially now on paper.
You're the best thing that's ever happened to Christy,
so look after her.
Otherwise, just enjoy your day, guys.
Lovely, wasn't it?
I don't know these people and I'm crying right now Beautiful messages
Yeah, we've got some more to play
too, but I think we'll have a breather from the message
Can't wait for me too
Ben's crying, we're crying over people
we've never even met before.
You're still alive.
You guys are still alive.
You're all good.
Yeah, good.
Next, another big surprise.
We've got a powerful half hour of surprises for you.
Stick with us.
George and Christy, freshly married here in Fiji.
And back next with a... This is going to be a big one.
Jono, Ben and Megan.
The podcast.
The hits.
Live in Fiji is George and Christy.
You came on an epic journey with us,
not only through the last week,
but the last 24 hours where we surprised them yesterday
when they were getting their fittings,
said they were going to get married
at the end of the day in Fiji.
Then we were off.
They stayed in their wedding dress
and their, and the suits.
So did we.
Yeah.
Throughout the day, through the plane ride,
through a very turbulent helicopter ride
that we got there safely
and then got them married at sunset in a beautiful chapel here
at the Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort, thanks to Tourism Fiji.
Yeah, now, you two, it's been an emotional 24 hours for you, hasn't it?
Extremely.
Jeez, I feel like every time we talk to you, we're just making you cry.
I'm so sorry, Christy.
I do have a feeling this break is going to be a bit different.
We feel pretty privileged to be taking the place of your family and friends on this trip.
I inadvertently became your bridesmaid.
And on the way to the airport, I met your mum. You've got to look back at the photos and videos and go,
who are those weird people that were...
A weird, strange bald man crouching down with his phone in our faces
as we were doing our wedding vows.
Recording radio audio.
Hopefully AI can Photoshop me out.
I met your wonderful mum, and she gave you a rose quartz,
which we put in your bouquet so your mum could be with you.
And you have a wonderful stepdad.
But your amazing dad, Tony, he passed away when you were 21.
Now, I have cleared this with Christy, that when you talk about this, there was a beautiful story
that you told me in the car on the way to the airport about how your dad kind of hinted that
you might be getting this trip. Oh man, that sounds crazy to say out loud.
But yeah, no, on Friday morning I was driving to work
and I talk to my dad in the universe sometimes, you know, about things.
And I was like, oh my gosh, how amazing would it be to win this wedding.
And one of the songs that I have on this playlist that I have
for just, you know, when I
want to have a cry and think about my dad, came on, and I just instantly, I felt like, I was like, oh,
hi dad, which is, yeah, I know, crazy to say on radio, but I was like, oh, hi dad, and then I was like, oh, is this
you telling me I'm gonna win, like, you know, are you, are you behind all of this, and then I just had
this weird feeling, like, we're gonna win, my dad's, like, involved, and then we won, and then I just had this weird feeling like we're gonna win my dad's like involved and then we won and then um you guys rang the wrong number and instead of calling TJ
you called Tony and my dad's name's Tony so I was like oh that's so uncanny like it was like
he's really wanting to make sure I know that he's behind this like you know like oh it was just so
cute and it's just another it just felt all perfect and like this is all. Like, you know, like, oh, it was just so cute. And it's just another, it just felt all perfect.
And like, this is all meant to be, you know.
There was an older gentleman named Tony
that we accidentally called who also wished you well.
He had some great words for a stranger on the fly.
In the helicopter ride yesterday,
the bit of a hairy helicopter ride,
there was rain.
And as we were flying,
we were almost landing at the outrigger there was
the most incredible rainbow that went from one side of the helicopter right i'm not even joking
right over the helicopter to the other side yeah and i kind of nudged you and we were like this is
your dad yeah it felt like that it very much felt like that i think you know how rainbows come and
go and they're quite fleeting?
You see a little bit of it.
It was a full rainbow right over the helicopter
and it followed us the whole way.
The whole way there.
Wow.
That's beautiful.
I believe in that stuff.
I'm glad because I don't want to say it sounded crazy.
I talk to the voices in my head too.
I reckon that has genuinely happened
Thank you for sharing that with us
and thank you for sharing the last 24 hours
with us as well
it's been an amazing journey
I hope you've had a good trip so far
It's been unbelievable
and you guys have been the best wedding party too
like honestly
you were taking care of everything
asking me if I needed water
you helped me with my hair and makeup I couldn't have done that on my own you kept George here Like, honestly, you were taking care of everything, asking me if I needed water.
You helped me with my hair and makeup.
Like, I couldn't have done that on my own.
You kept George here.
He wasn't able to run away.
Like, you know, like, it's been great.
He tried a couple of times. Been at the buddy's crack a little bit.
Yeah, we get to be a mate.
But it doesn't end here for you, okay?
You need to go on a honeymoon.
Yeah.
Yes.
And we're going to take you on a honeymoon.
We're not coming.
We're not coming.
We go home today.
You're staying a couple more nights here at the Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort
and then you're going to an island, Castaway Island as well,
for a few nights as well.
It's going to be so amazing, eh?
Oh, it's going to be cool.
Thank you so much.
You're very welcome.
Thanks to Tourism Fiji.
Jono, Ben and Megan.
The podcast. The hits. George and All thanks to Tourism Fiji. Jono, Ben and Megan. The podcast.
The hits.
George and Christy still hanging around with us.
They can obviously leave us very shortly and get on with their lives without us,
which they're probably looking forward to.
Yesterday, started off the day not knowing they were going to get married,
and then by the end of the day, ended up in Fiji married.
Here's how it wrapped up.
For the first time ever, Miss by Mrs. Rose! wrapped up.
Now Megan you're saying the friends and whanau are messaging
in here for 487? We have been
playing some messages from your friends and family
but I got a text from your brother here. It says
Hey Christy, your brother driving Indy to school
and she's really happy that you guys are married now
and she wants a baby girl cousin
to play with, please. So
just letting you know, it begins.
Yeah, now brace yourself
for another tear-jerking montage, baby.
I've got the
tissue box now. Good on you. More of your
friends and family who couldn't make it
of course with us to Fiji wanted
to pass on their messages to you.
Hi Christy, hi George.
This is TJ, your bestie I guess.
I just wanted to say that you two genuinely actually deserve this.
A lot of people listening probably don't understand this but you're genuinely two of the actual best people
moralistically and all of that that I know
and I'm really glad that you finally got to declare your love to one another of the actual best people moralistically and all of that that I know.
And I'm really glad that you finally got to
declare your love to one another
in another country.
This is amazing
and I'm so thankful
to have you guys in my life.
I'm just really glad
that this happened to you.
Christy, love you heaps.
You made some fantastic choices
later in your years
and George is certainly one of them.
He's a good guy.
My time I've spent with him, he's certainly the right choice. Love you heaps. Have a good day. Congratulations George
and Christy. Very happy you guys are finally getting married even though we can't be there
but we do wish you all the best in beautiful Fiji. We love you so much. Congratulations guys.
Wishing you both love and happiness on your wedding day. Begin your new life together as husband and wife.
Hope you have an amazing time in Fiji.
Love you both.
Lots of love, Joanna and Jackson.
Hey, Jordan and Christy.
Dustin here to say congratulations.
Wishing we could be with you to celebrate your special day.
I hope you have a fantastic time and the best day.
You guys deserve it.
I'm so very happy for you,
and I can't wait to see you guys when you get home.
Love to you both from me and Kylie.
It's Mum here.
George, you're going to have to start calling me Mum.
I just wanted to wish you congratulations.
Really happy for you both,
and really grateful that you found each other.
George, you are really good at calming Christy's crazy.
Christy, you're really good at bringing George's up a little bit
and getting him engaged and excited about things.
So I think you make a great couple.
We're really happy for you
and really delighted that you've had this opportunity.
Love you.
See you when you get back.
Hi, Christy.
All the best for the future, you and George.
I know it's all going to be fantastic.
We're so proud of you and Dan could be so proud of you today too. We love you.
Beautiful messages there from family and friends who couldn't make it. They're all wanting to know
you guys can put on a bit of a party when you get back for them to celebrate with you. Yeah,
we'll have to do that. that. Now, I had a speech
to make, but I haven't had a chance to make it.
How long
is this going to take?
Can I just do some highlights?
Highlights, just to think.
But, you know, you worked with the New Zealand Police,
but you've been patrolling each other's
hearts for nine years, and stuff like that.
And now, you're putting your love
under arrest, and you've been sentenced to a life sentence of marriage, you know, stuff like that and now you're putting your love under arrest and you've
been sentenced to a life sentence of marriage you know stuff like that just a few highlights
spent half an hour on it it's okay don't worry quite as romantic uh well thank you so much to
george and chrissy for being uh being up for this and sharing this with us and the country as well
so thank you thank you guys for this incredible opportunity. We cannot
thank you all enough. So many beautiful
messages coming through from people just been listening
to this whole journey. Thank you so much. It's been lovely
to meet you both. Enjoy your
honeymoon without us in it.
Unless you want us to.
And then I'll be happy to stay on.
Can we record one more thing?
John O'Bannon Megan.
The podcast. The podcast.
The hits.
The amazing journey that we got to be part of,
which was really special,
is we brought them over, surprised them over to bring them to Fiji to get married.
Surprised them yesterday,
and they got married in Fiji at the end of the day.
Beautiful chapel here at the Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort.
All thanks to Tourism Fiji,
and a whole lot of people made this happen.
Yeah.
Do you want to do some shout-outs there, Megan?
The rings, diamonds on Richmond.
Thank you so much.
They're beautiful.
The suits from Barkers.
The dress from yours truly by Trish Ping.
The helicopter ride here, thanks to Island Hoppers.
And, of course, the art rigger for hosting us.
And, of course, no, that was all.
That was all.
You can get some more sponsors in there if you want.
Good job.
Lamborghini for providing us some.
For gifting us all one each.
Yeah, when we return.
Yeah, well, that was lovely.
We're manifesting.
Yeah.
Now, we did arrive yesterday and were welcomed.
A wonderful welcoming party.
We came off the helicopter ride and there were some Fijian warriors there.
And Ben was like, abdawaz.
They were like, what?
And you're like, oh, it's a thing.
Anyway, he didn't end up explaining it.
But Josh, we've got talking to Josh, one of the Warriors.
Amazing guy.
Have a listen to him.
Yeah, he's awesome.
Bula.
Oh.
Wait, wait.
Start again.
Start again.
Start again.
Take two.
Take two.
Take two.
Okay.
Bula.
Bula Minaka.
That had some passion behind it.
Oh, yeah.
How are you, Josh?
You all right? I'm good, man. How are you? We're doing well. You gave us a lovely welcome. Always, always. That had some passion behind it. Oh, yeah. How are you, Joshua?
I'm good, man.
How are you?
We're doing well.
You gave us a lovely welcome.
Always, always.
That's how we roll here in Fiji.
You've given us names as well.
You've updated our names.
We've got, like, for George, we've got Chotchi.
Chotchi.
Ben.
Penny.
Penny.
Chonna.
Same as Chonna.
We have them here.
Oh, you have Chonna.
Are they as pasty and white as me here?
Different, different, yeah.
I'm under a shade right now and getting sunburned somehow.
What's your role here at the Outrigger?
The activities guy attended.
We do all the fun parts of the resort.
Cool activities, you name it, there there's a lot even though we also have
our newly advanced park where we have a paintball golf oh wow archery do i tell you what one of the
greatest attractions in this hotel are your abdominals man look at those things you know
this just drink a lot of cover and then you'll have this already Oh, really? Karma is a secret, is it? Yeah, yeah. What's one other thing you can teach us?
Anything you can teach us?
Like what do you mean?
Like a saying or...
Like a saying.
Oh, Fiji time.
Oh, you want to know about Fiji time?
In Fiji, we do not hurry or worry.
We say no hurry, no worry,
because everybody's on Fiji time.
Get that right there, mana.
Do you know what, Josh?
Ironically, he said that to us,
and then a lady came up and was like, hurry, hurry, hurry. We need to get out of here. I know you're there, man. Do you know what, Josh? Ironically, he said that to us, and then a lady came up and was like,
hurry, hurry, hurry.
We need to get out of here.
I know you're not here.
You haven't passed the message on to her.
Well, she was.
