This is Jono and Ben podcast. Hey, that's us. Brought to you by HelloFresh, the experts and tastes that Kiwis love.
Welcome to the podcast. On a Thursday morning, Megan, you're running off about a four hour sleep.
Oh, less than that probably.
Three hours last night and then four hours the night before because I did a double header.
Lord of the Rings musical, which was fantastic. Gollum was incredible.
In fact, the guy that played Gollum was probably the most incredible thing I've seen on a musical stage.
No, we didn't see Jono there, but then as Gollum, I was like, was that Jono all along?
Pretty incredible.
When Gollum turned up, I said to Andrew, I was like, that guy looks a lot like Jono.
Never seen the two of them in the same room at the same time, that's all I'm saying.
Slapped an eagle on his chest with some boats on his guts.
Well, I did have a lot more tattoos than I remember from the movies.
That was really good.
Maybe it was, Jono.
Then last night, of course, Coldplay, which we get to reflect on a lot.
I talked to the CEO of Eden Park on the podcast today.
Really interesting to see.
I don't know why I've reached that stage in my life where I'm thinking logistics.
When you go to a concert, you're enjoying it,
but you're also thinking,
how the heck do they put this together?
I know, yeah.
There's a lot that goes into it when you look at it.
Even just doing the fan trail.
So you can walk from the city centre of Auckland
to Eden Park and there's just stuff
all along the way for you to enjoy.
That's awesome.
And the Mariah Carey game, it continues on.
We're still trying to avoid listening to Mariah Carey game It continues on We're still trying to avoid
Listening to Mariah Carey
All I Want for Christmas
However as you're going to hear
At the beginning of the podcast
A very mischievous listener
Tash has been trying to catch up
Maddie and PJ in the afternoon
And we get Maddie McLean on
To defend this
Here's Tash
Trying to avoid the Mariah Carey song
All I Want for Christmas
For as long as possible
It's a fun little Christmas game we're playing.
As we keep saying, we love the song.
We just thought it was the most iconic song.
And could we go out and live our lives without hearing it on social media, in shops, wherever it is.
As soon as you hear it, you're out of the game.
You can start playing now if you're not playing.
Yeah, actually I should call this number because someone had a great idea yesterday.
Because we are not allowed to listen to the recorded version of Mariah Carey's.
But there was a suggestion that came through that maybe we get Ben to sing it.
You've been doing such a great job of singing the Venga Boys.
I haven't really, to be honest.
I feel like I'm a punchline.
I feel like you're laughing at my lack of singing ability.
We've got some great singers in the country right now.
Chris Martin from Coldplay.
We had Eddie Vedder from Bell Jam Ben Boyce
The new found talent
You're mocking me, I feel like I'm punched
But someone actually suggested that since we can't listen to the Mariah version
That we get Ben to do a version of it
Alright
Now they text 4487
And this is high risk, high reward stuff
Calling them live on air, I tell ya
Hey, they answered, What's your name?
Ben.
Ben.
Oh, we've got another Ben.
Now, Ben, we loved your suggestion.
A bit of a workaround so we could hear the song of our Ben Boyce singing Mariah Carey.
You know, well, he's a man of the people and he's done such a good job with the Venga Boys.
I thought, you know, what better way to send us out if we hear it with a lovely rendition.
Yeah.
Whoa, we're going to Ibiza.
That's my Venga Boys version.
So you won't want to hear that before nine o'clock.
Oh, yeah.
So we took on your suggestion.
I was like, hey, I'm like Frank Sinatra.
Apparently he only did one take in the studio.
Sometime we regretted that.
So I'm like, yesterday, one take, one take only.
And I did it.
And it wasn't great.
Yeah, but listen.
I don't want a lot for Christmas.
There is just one thing I need,
and I don't care about the presents
underneath the Christmas tree.
I don't care.
Oh, God.
So, Ben, were you happy with the end result?
Oh, as long as people smile from it, what's a better result?
That was a great suggestion, Ben.
I love it.
Okay, so you'll now hear that when you're out of the game.
That's the song, some of it.
So you don't want to be out of the game, believe you me.
Thanks for listening to the show, Ben.
We appreciate it.
No worries.
Enjoy the rest of your day.
You're good.
A lot of people jumping on board with this campaign as well,
and we have Tash, who, a bit of a saboteur, if you will.
Tash, you cheeky little monkey.
Hello, how are you?
We're good. Lovely to have you on.
Thank you so much, firstly, for really being invested in the
We Wish You a Kerry Christmas campaign,
trying to avoid listening to All I Want for Christmas.
You've been trying to sabotage the lovable,
the lovable, relatable Maddie McClain.
Yes.
Well, yeah.
Oh, so what I did is I created a post
and it had like a thumbnail of just like Maddie and PJ's face.
And, you know, and then I said something in the caption.
I was like, this language is not appropriate.
Because then I was like, oh, Maddie will definitely want to listen to this.
Because, you know, it's like getting framed for something he didn't do.
I love it.
So you put this out on social media in the hope that he would view it,
he would listen to it.
It was just like, I left it like for like two seconds silent.
Because then I was like, oh, you'll keep listening to think of it.
And then it went like the start of the song.
And then I was just envisioning his face going, what?
And then it goes, I don't want to love you.
And you can tell when people have viewed a video.
Has he seen it?
Has he left you unseen?
No.
But what he did do is he liked the story and then he unliked it and I have
screenshots of it.
So he probably liked it and then he went
oh, oh, oh.
Do you think he liked it and then texted it?
He listened to it and went, oh, I can't like this.
Oh, Matthew.
And you've got receipts as
they say. You've got the receipts.
You've kept the receipts.
Tasha is so cheeky.
So technically he could be out of the game. It's an honesty thingipts. Tasha is so cheeky. I love it. So technically
he could be out of the game. It's an honesty
thing and he could be out of the game. Tasha, do you suggest
we make a call to Matthew McLean?
Yeah.
Okay. Well, thank you so much
for the intel, the inside word
there, which would mean then
PJ and Maddie and Sarah,
producer Sarah in the afternoon.
The hits, the Jono and Ben podcast.
The Mariah Carey game that we're playing for Christmas,
we try and see how long we can avoid hearing the song.
Once you hear the song, no matter where you are,
no matter if you're just scrolling through social media,
you're out of the game.
We had Tash before who set some sort of parent trap situation
for Maddie McLean, right?
Yeah, she'd set up a burner account and posted a picture of him and PJ going,
I can't believe you would say this and then had given the soundtrack or added the soundtrack
of All I Want for Christmas and hoping that they would click on it.
And Maddie joins us on the phone now.
Good morning.
Hello.
Good morning.
Lovely to have you on.
Have we been pumping iron getting the cardio happening this morning?
No, it's a chill morning this morning.
Relax, you've got to have your rest days.
Exactly.
You can't push stuff too hard, Jono.
And I don't, and I don't.
Listen, the Mariah Carey game, it's been fun.
PJ's out.
She was listening to it in some chia cake shop in Marserton.
And now you're the last one
standing in the afternoon.
It feels like a lot of pressure on my shoulders
I'm not going to lie. It's a scary
prospect. So you're still in the game?
You're still in the game 100%? I'm still in the
game. Okay so well that's okay.
That's your story that you're
sticking with? That's my story.
What do you mean? Now listen
Tash has got in touch with us.
Tash has
been a little tricky.
We promised as a show, we promised
to play nice, as your
show, so that we've had nothing to do with this
other than it's come across our
desk, even though we don't have a desk. Makes it sound
more powerful. Say that. It's come across
our desk. A big mahogany desk.
Okay, this is from Tash. Okay, have a listen so what i did is i i created a post and it had like a um thumbnail of
just like maddie and pj's face and you know and then i said something in the caption i was like
this language is not appropriate because then i was like oh maddie will definitely want to listen
to this because you know it's like getting framed for something he didn't do.
It was just like, I left it for like two seconds silent
because then I was like, oh, he'll keep listening to like,
and then it went like the start of the song.
And then like, so what he did do is he liked the story
and then he unliked it.
And I have screenshots of it.
Oh, so he probably liked it.
So many.
Yeah.
Okay.
Can I just say, where have all these narcs come from?
Hey, we have some loyal listeners.
This is great.
This is outrageous behaviour.
Okay, answer the question.
Would you like to change your response?
Yeah, answer the question, Mr. McLean.
No, I am sticking to my response.
And here is the very sad thing for Tash,
who should not be doing that,
because I thought we agreed Sabotage was out.
Well, we did, but I guess the people listening, yeah.
The listeners never agreed, I guess.
They're on their own.
We can't be responsible for everyone.
The sad news for Tash is that I don't care
for listening to people's stories on loud.
Oh, so you didn't hear it.
I never have the sound turned up.
So I did not hear a single thing.
But you're not tempted to go, what language was I using?
No, because here's the thing.
This makes so much sense because I saw those.
I did see the stories, but I kept waiting for a video to appear
and so when no video
appeared, I kept thinking, so I
didn't even realise there was sound
attached to it. So why did you
like it and then unlike it? I don't think I
did like it. There's screenshots, babes.
Yeah, we got my seats. Well, maybe I did.
Look,
all I'm saying, I feel like I'm tripping
over my words here. Yeah, no further questions, Your Honour.
Look, I'm pleading the fifth.
I'm pleading the fifth.
This is one of those moments they get a little rattled,
they get a little frazzled, then the lawyer goes,
no more questions.
You're like, oh, they're guilty.
They're guilty.
You know what?
I'm calling it now.
I'm out of the game.
I'm going to go and play Mariah by myself.
No.
No, because now that feels like you've flipped the Monopoly board
and you're like, I don't want to play anymore.
We want you in the game.
This is exactly it,
and this is why you should never play a competitive game with me.
Let this be your lesson.
We want you in the game.
We want you in the game.
I want this as a televised trial like the Johnny Depp ever heard.
Okay, so at this...
Let's say Matty's in the game
I reckon yeah
Let's keep him in the game
I assume he just hearted it
Out of his generosity
It's kind of heart
Unhearted it
Because
He was like
I don't know what I hearted
I'm on your side Matty
Well I'm going and bloody
Blocking Tash now
I mean
Blocked
Tash is awesome
I love how riled up you get
Just teasing you Tash is amazing We love you Matty I love you too I love how riled up you get just teasing you
we love you Maddie
I love you too
I love you too
but I'm winning
this bloody game
alright Maddie McLean
still in the bit
still got something
in the something
still in the game
oh for something so
Christmassy
it's really turning
quite tense isn't it
the hits
the Jono and Ben podcast
play last night.
It was incredible.
Megan and I were lucky enough to go along.
It was just an amazing experience.
The light-up bracelets, the huge balloons, the fireworks, confetti,
even 3D glasses at one stage.
Just joyous.
Just incredible.
Isn't the concert already in three dimensions, though, in real life?
Well, yeah, they added another.
No, so you put the glasses on and they make every light
you see a heart.
Yeah, or stars as well
for some of them.
It's really, really cool.
It's beautiful.
Yeah, it's amazing
what they did
and if you get a chance
to go along
the Friday, Saturday night
Eden Park,
get tickets.
It's just incredible.
We said it was worth
a light assault
or the threat of an assault
if you're waiting.
Yeah, like if you're waiting
outside the gates
of Eden Park,
go, hey buddy, I could
get a bit fisty-cuffy if you don't
give me your tickets. Don't actually follow through,
but it's worth that, you said.
Well, I reluctantly said that.
He brought joy
and love, and Chris Martin was just...
I don't feel like that's the vibe.
No, it's definitely not the vibe.
Pickpocketing. No one gets it.
It's not worth any white-collar crime, like some sort of tax evasion. Crime or violence is not the vibe. Pickpocketing. Pickpocketing. No one gets it. It's not worth any. White collar crime, okay?
Like some sort of tax evasion.
Crime or violence is not the Coldplay way.
No, exactly.
So you could, you know tickets, you know how they copy money?
Could you do that with the tickets?
White collar stuff.
Get some tickets legitimately and enjoy it.
It's amazing.
Chris Martin, you actually recorded some of it.
Yeah, this was Viva La Vida last night.
The crowd singing along.
That's my husband singing along.
He's a good singer.
I found a little self-conscious standing next to him at some stage too
because I was like, oh, he can sing.
I can't.
Clearly, you've heard me this morning.
But everyone getting into it.
It's so cool to see Kiwis up and about.
So cool.
It was incredible.
Chris Martin, when he travels the world,
and he talked about this last night on stage,
he said, I got a bit of grief, not quite how you'd describe it,
but a bit of grief when he arrived in New Zealand for doing this
because he kisses the ground before he leaves on a plane and when he lands.
Because you were telling me about this before the show last night,
and then he mentioned it at the show that when he arrived, he kisses the ground.
So he still does it.
The tarmac of the runway, doesn't he?
Yeah.
I think he had a flight that he didn't think he was going to survive.
He felt lucky to be alive.
And so now he's kind of a little, I guess, a superstition
and also being thankful for landing.
He kisses the ground.
His lips would taste like rubber and aviation fuel.
I feel like he's a kiss the earth kind of.
Like I feel like he gets off the tarmac and then kisses the dirt.
Oh, because the concept, you can power it with bikes and all sorts,
and you can jump on these little trampolines that'll power it as well.
The power floor.
He's definitely hugged a tree.
He's definitely wrapped his hands around the tree.
But I get that, you know, if you didn't know the backstory of it,
that it actually came from a harrowing experience.
Just a guy going, you know, because if we're catching a Jetstar flight
and you're like, what's he doing at the airport?
If I do it today when we get to Christchurch.
Why don't you?
Yeah.
We'll all kiss the ground.
You know, once Ben starts something like that,
it's going to,
because don't you touch the plane before you go on?
Yeah, I do.
I touch the plane door as I go on.
So you're going to cuddle the plane before we go
and kiss the ground when we land.
You're right.
That wasn't from me.
That was from a friend of ours, Jeremy.
He's like, always touch this.
Good luck.
You've got to touch the door on the way in.
Is he getting to third base with the airport?
No.
Do you need us to leave?
It would be nice if we could have some alone time with the planes and stuff.
That would be great.
So we want to know, oh, under the hats, we started this a couple of days ago.
Like Chris Martin, why are you lucky to be alive?
Yeah.
You can give us a text too, 4487.
We'd love to get your calls and texts on you.
And there's been some incredible stories.
The gentleman we spoke to the other day rolled his car seven times.
Yeah.
Then he was like, oh, can't be late for work.
Got his skateboard out of his boot.
Skateboarded.
80 k's.
Yeah, 80 kilometres to the farm.
Did a 12-hour shift on the farm.
Then was like, oh, a bit sore.
That's an amazing story.
Realised he had been concussed all day.
Multiple broken bones.
And legend.
Yeah, just incredible.
So those are the types of stories we want.
The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast.
Talking about why you're lucky to be alive.
It's been a special three-part series this week, isn't it?
Traumatic three-part series.
Awesome people, some wild stories.
Just incredible.
They keep coming through, the texts and the calls.
Michelle, how are you?
Hi, I'm good.
How are you?
Good.
We understand you're lucky to be here.
I am, yes.
When I was 13, I got caught in a rip out in Piha.
Oh, wow, yeah.
I've never been caught in a rip, but I imagine panic stations,
which is not what you meant to do, is it?
No.
Yeah, after getting bashed around for quite some time,
it felt like I went into an air bubble.
So it was like, it felt safe.
Oh, my God.
So you're thinking you're going to die?
Yeah.
After choking and coughing and trying to be, you know, help, help, help,
you know, another wave came down and, you know, took me right under.
So that happened quite a few times.
Yeah, it kind of just felt like I was safe in this air bubble underwater.
And then finally came back up again,
and a surfer came and put me on his board and took me back in.
Oh, my goodness.
So there was an air bubble under the water?
Is that what you're saying?
Well, yeah, it felt like I'd gone into a big air bubble, like a balloon.
It just felt like, okay, yeah, I feel safe now.
Do you think that might have been you nearly going?
Nearly dying, yeah, I really do.
And I'm 42 now, and I was 13 when that happened.
And that surfer, boy oh boy.
Honestly, I'm scared of that beach.
And to this day, I really, really regret not saying thank you to that guy.
Oh listen, I don't think he would blame you.
You had a lot of stuff going on. It took me probably
I'd say 25
years to go back to Piha and
even now I will still only go
knee length and my kids are
out there surfing
but yeah no I'm still too scared to
go. Not surprised yeah.
And from a mother's point of view too and
I'm not a mother but I imagine it's quite hard after
you've gone through an experience like that
to let your children then go out.
Oh, I'm always right there.
I'm like, oh my gosh, like I get so nervous, but I just let them.
Yeah, you've got to.
Let them do it because I don't want to be that helicopter parent,
but, you know, it doesn't take long to get swept out.
No, mate.
And so what would your advice be
after being caught in a rip if anyone
finds themselves in that situation?
Try not to panic, I guess.
There's not really much you can do.
Well, I think you're supposed to swim
diagonally towards the beach,
but I didn't know that at that time.
No, and you're not thinking. You probably don't know what direction you're in.
Oh, yeah. Thanks again.
Thank you for sharing. I do appreciate it. You go and have a great day. That's alright. You too, guys. See ya. See ya, Michelle. Mandy and you're not thinking. You probably don't know what direction you're in. Thanks again. Thank you for sharing. I do appreciate it.
You go and have a great day.
That's all right.
You too, guys.
See you.
Mandy, you're lucky to be alive.
Yeah.
Eight years ago when I had my baby, I lost three-quarters of the blood in my body.
Three-quarters?
Jeez.
Yeah.
I didn't look so good.
I had to be in ICU for a couple of nights.
And luckily, there were some good doctors and nurses on hand who saved my life.
And my baby and I were okay.
Was it a caesarean or was it a...
No, it was a caesarean, but they didn't realize that the placenta was attached to the uterus until they opened me up.
Do you actually remember it?
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, it was pretty hectic.
What do you feel like with three quarters of your blood
draining from your body what are you are you kind of you kind of feel really woozy and like on your
way above your body out of kind of like out of out of life out of body experience it did feel like
that yeah wow and so what do they do in that situation are they trying to put pump blood into
you as it's draining out or they have to stop the bleeding and then they yeah they had to obviously
try and stop the bleeding first and then luckily there were blood donors that had donated blood and
pumped a whole lot of blood into me jeez and that's why that's so important yeah at what point
were you like this is this is going bad When did you think something... Because I imagine they would all start to get quite panicky around the table.
Yeah, when they started calling for extra doctors.
You're like, why? Why?
Why do we need more doctors?
Because you have that big curtain up and you feel everyone working on you,
but you're not aware of what they're doing.
That would have been terrifying.
And my poor husband, he didn't know what was going on.
Because when an ethertist went out to tell him what had happened, he didn't know what was going on because when an ether test went out
to tell him what had happened
he said he had such a poker face on
he thought that it was the end for me.
Jeez.
Keep saying this to everyone. So glad that you're
safe and well now and
you made it through that ordeal. Yep.
Yeah, all good.
Now Megan, you showed us
a photo of Sabrina Carpenter
singing a song next to Taylor Swift.
Now, Sabrina Carpenter, what is she like, three foot five?
The start of that song is like,
I leave quite an impression, five feet to be exact.
She's like five foot.
Oh, she's giving us her measurements.
It looked like Gandalf and Frodo, you know, like it did.
She's very petite, isn't she?
And Taylor Swift isn't overly tall.
She's pretty tall. isn't she? And Taylor Swift isn't overly tall. She's pretty tall.
Taylor Swift is pretty tall.
She's 1.78, so she's taller than me.
It looks like she was doing a duet with a toddler, didn't she?
And she was wearing massive heels too, so she's even smaller than that.
She can write a hell of a song too.
Yeah, it's a great song.
Now, I don't know about you guys, but there's one.
I enjoy a conversation.
I love a conversation.
But there's one place I'd rather not talk and that's in the bathroom but when you're in the bathroom it feels like that
if there's a conversation going on between someone who's outside the bathroom and you i'm like the
house better be burning down that's the only time i want to have a conversation when i'm in the bath
you're not solving the big world issues in the back no israel and palestine you're not going
to knock that off on the side of bathroom but you know but every parent listening right now will know that kids, for many years, kids will just, for us, kids will just burst on it.
They don't have barriers.
They've got to ask you something that's not important.
It's just another room in the house to them.
Yeah, but I thought maybe my time of bathroom conversations had stopped.
You know, like the conversations where you've just, you know, and I like to think sometimes if I need to go to the bathroom,
I like to think, have I had all the conversations with people in the room
before I take five minutes for myself just to do what I need to do?
And I did this over the weekend.
Jesus, did you do a five-minute shower?
You're a prolific guy.
You can get stuff done quickly.
Oh, yeah, and whatever you need to do in the bathroom.
But, you know, over the weekend I'd been to the supermarket.
My daughter had some friends around for a party and stuff.
So I'd done all that, put the food away, done all some things.
And I thought, well, you know, I'm just going to go to the bathroom get sorted do what i
need to do you know let's freshen up yeah freshen up treat yourself and then i get a conversation
while i'm sitting there for my wife i'm like this better knock it this better be important
after i've been told to get fruit and a list of things and been getting things off my list i'm
like oh this is important the house burning down is like she's like don't tell me you paid twelve dollars for half a watermelon this is the conversation oh god did you know
can we talk about this later yes I did does this have to be a conversation right now like right
now and then I was like well no I won't tell you I paid well like what do you want me to do like
clearly I did so this is a red firstly it's a conversation I don't want you I paid. What do you want me to do? Like, clearly I did.
Firstly, it's a conversation I don't want to have.
And a redundant conversation.
You clearly have seen the price.
So why are we doing this conversation?
It's definitely a lead-in, isn't it?
Don't tell me.
You're like, well, yes, I did.
And it's in a situation I don't want to have a conversation in.
So I'm like, well, I won't tell you that then.'t tell you that then why can we not wait until I've come out
and did you continue the conversation on afterwards
I came out and I was like what's with that
we could have had that conversation now
that's definitely guys consider
that your me time eh
that's your special time
I don't have a special but it just feels like
you always spend a lot of time in there
you take your phone in there and you stew
and you stench it's just weird nice to have a little bit of time in there. You take your phone in there and you stew and you stench. It's just weird.
Nice to have a little bit of time out from everyone.
But anyway.
Discuss the price of watermelons.
Yeah, and I did.
I paid way too much for a half a watermelon.
But there's no good way to bring that up with you.
Because if you came out and she was like, hey, so in future, let's not pay $12 for half
a watermelon, that sounds passive aggressive.
So does what?
Please don't tell me.
Is it $24 for an entire watermelon?
I guess so.
That is wild.
I was in the market for a full one.
But her question stands.
What were you thinking?
I wasn't.
I was in my just get stuff done phase.
I was like, what did you want?
Watermelon, done it, in the trolley.
And I shouldn't have paid that much.
It's way too much.
I know that.
The supermarkets know that.
But I did it.
I'm the sucker that did it.
The Hits, the Jono and Ben Podcast
I don't know if anyone
else does this
but do you experience
in your day to day
that you've got
stored in your
in your brain
little one liners
you'll give for any
any situation
that may pop up
I don't have that
but I'm not surprised
you do
do you not have that
like a lot of the times
it's like a common question
that you have
where's Jono
I'm like in the car
with the window down
do you do that
I do that last night do people always say. Where's Jono? I'm like, in the car with the window down. Do you do that? I do that.
Last night, do people always say to you, hey, Jono and Ben?
Yeah, quite often.
It's like, no, that's just Ben.
No, but no one knows the difference.
Otherwise, they'll take a stab and go, Jono, I don't mind.
If they say my name's Jono.
They literally call you both of them.
Yeah.
Hey, Jono and Ben.
You're like, yeah, well, that'll do.
I'll do the same.
Yeah, I'll be like, hey, where's Ben?
I'll just go, in the car with a bag of chips. Now, the problem is, I've said that where's Ben I'll just go in the car
with a bag of chips
now the problem is
I've said that line
so many times
that the kids
in my family
are like
they've got to the point
where they go
he's in the car
with a bag of chips
that was a genuine
laugh from me
well thank you
yeah good
I mean you're hearing it
for the first time
that's what I have to
tell the family
I'm like these people
new audience
you've got to
you know
Chris Martin from Coldplay
he's not going around
doing different songs every stadium he goes to.
He's in the same song every night.
Except for Bryn, who's going to every show.
He's probably got a new audience every night.
Yeah, Bryn, our night host.
But yesterday I tapped into a beauty for the birthday yesterday,
and I road-tested it on you guys early in the morning.
You said, happy birthday, and I said, yep, getting old now.
Good news is, Can still run for the
President of the United States
Oh yes I did hear that one
I heard a weird chuckle
I did laugh at that
Yeah no that was
And I was like
Girl this is some good
This is some good fodder
For my birthday
So if anyone
Throughout the day
Says to me
Hey happy birthday John
I was like good news is
Can still run for the
President of the United States
And it was killing it
It was killing it
All over town yesterday
It was
Smashing it
In the swing states as well
It was polling well.
It was all going great.
Went out to the school.
Now the problem was
outside Poppy's school.
Someone said,
oh, I heard on the radio
it was your birthday today.
Ba, ba, ba.
President of the United States.
Mm-hmm.
Bit of a light laugh there.
Now then I went to dance,
Poppy's dance later
in the afternoon.
And picking her up too.
Again, someone said
happy birthday.
Delivered the line,
delivered the comedy again for the eighth or ninth time yesterday.
And someone else overheard it.
No, also at school as well.
He said that this afternoon.
Someone had already been to the show.
Not happy.
Not good when someone hears it twice.
They call you out on it too.
At least just laugh.
They go, yeah, well well you said that joke already
but anyway.
That's right.
It was great to be called out though.
That's what you want.
Just a little warning there.
If you are doing one-liners
throughout your day,
just be careful
you've delivered them too.
You've got a year to come up with.
Maybe you have a list
for next year.
You can use a few.
Five or six.
Alternate them.
Or something like that.
The hits.
The Jono and Ben podcast.
Coldplay.
First of three nights at Eden Park last night.
57,000 people, as the delightful Chris Martin said on stage.
It was incredible.
Megan and myself went along.
Just unbelievable.
Like, the best concert.
Spectacular.
Just, yeah, joyous would be a word I'd use to describe it.
Britt Ruckin.
Wholesome.
Yeah, who reads the news here and does the night show at the Hits.
You went last night and you're going all three nights.
I am.
I'm not obsessed, as some people might think.
Would Chris Martin consider a restraining order, you think?
Maybe.
Maybe.
But, you know, he's getting a lot of money out of me this week.
I've paid you a lot of cash, Chris Martin, so I deserve to stalk you.
Now, you went to Perth to see this show. But you're like, I've paid you a lot of cash, Chris Bunn, so I deserve to stalk you. Now, you went to Perth to see this show.
But you're not obsessed.
Yeah, not obsessed.
That was this time last year.
They went to Perth.
And I booked that trip before they announced they were coming to New Zealand.
Why did they play a rando Perth show?
Because they got lots of money for it.
They got Brins money and they also got Perth money too.
That sweet Perth cash.
The quokkas came through that live in Western
Australia.
There's some cash. So compared
to this
multi-million dollar Perth show they got paid to do
to the Eden Park one.
I mean, last night was incredible.
Slightly different to the Perth show because
they released a new album this year.
So there were about three songs from that album they played last night.
But, oh, ethereal is the way that I'll describe it.
It was like a spiritual.
Can you use a word we all understand?
Yeah, it's a big word.
When you say spiritual, I kind of got a little bit.
Yeah, there were times when I was like, what's in my drink?
Like putting the bracelets are genius.
You know, having the light up bracelets. It just feels like everyone's in my drink? Like, putting the bracelets are genius. You know, having the light-up bracelets.
It just feels like everyone's in.
All you need to do is hold your arm in the air
and it looks like everyone's just up and dancing.
Yeah, forget the phone flashlight.
You know, you've got the wristband.
Also, there's one moment where he was like,
put your phones away
and we're just going to experience this together.
And, like, everyone did.
Except for the girl next to me.
Your wife.
No, no, no.
I was making sure my wife didn't do that. But next to me, I was like, oh, mate's not doing it. But, yeah, pretty, everyone did. Except for the girl next to me. Your wife. No, no, no.
I was making sure my wife didn't do that.
But next to me, I was like, oh, mate's not doing it.
But, yeah, pretty much everyone did.
He said, put your phones away.
Chris Martin.
Because we're all going to experience this together. The charming Chris Martin told us to put the phones away.
Literally, yeah, for the start, for the most part,
everyone's phones were down.
And we were all, like, in the moment.
It was really sweet.
Not me, because I knew all the bits.
Having seen the show before
I was like
oh no
he's telling us to put it away
because they're about to do
something amazing
yeah
so did you kind of
spoil it for everyone
I did
in fact there were two guys
sitting next to me
who
I didn't know
but I ruined the whole show
for them
one of them was on
FaceTime the whole night
to his girlfriend
who was at home
and I was like
oh actually
don't FaceTime her yet.
After this bit, they're going to do the fireworks.
Were you directing their personal FaceTime call?
Don't be bothered with this part.
She won't want to watch it.
That's a long FaceTime call as well.
Everything like they had big mascot heads they put on.
There was puppets.
There was all sorts.
They just threw everything at it
I know, that's the moment where I was like, what's in my drink?
There was some puppets on stage
Glasses, love heart lights
Yeah, you're right, 3D glasses
pretty amazing
I think
the crowd, probably one of the best
concert crowds I've ever been to
everyone was just
so into it.
You couldn't have had two more different shows back-to-back, Eden Park?
You had Travis Scott, and then you've gone with Coldplay,
which is all about love.
Especially in the area where we were.
A few more blazers than at Travis Scott.
Blazers and t-shirt combos?
Yeah, a few more blazers around.
A bit casual casual but smart
you know smart casual
it was nice
yeah lovely
no very very cool
couple of boat shoes
yeah exactly
oh Bryn enjoy
Friday and Saturday night
thank you
and you're going again
yeah I'm going again
with the take the kids
on Saturday
so I'm looking forward to that
oh amazing
yeah I'll be the person
ruining it for them
I'll be like
oh put your phone away
wait for the fireworks
here it comes
oh thanks for coming in Bryn
the hits
the Jono and Ben Podcast
I always like to start the day
With the New Zealand
Herald Daily Quiz
To see if we can get
10 out of 10
As soon as we get one wrong
We stop
And produce Ellie's in
With her facials
That she kind of leads us
Into right answers
From time to time
No I don't
What are you talking about?
It is 90% luck
And 10% facials
This game Can I Now We love playing it luck and 10% facials, this game.
Now, we love playing it.
Don't get me wrong.
Love playing this game.
Love the fact it sucks up, you know,
six or seven minutes of radio first thing in the morning.
Do people like listening to it?
Can we get a poll going?
Text 4487.
Are you playing along in the car?
I hope you would.
What are you going to do if they say, no, it sucks?
Yeah.
Otherwise, is it just like listening to someone play a pub quiz?
Well, you can play along with it.
And we do ask for your help at some stage.
But yeah.
Hey, let's just do a little bit of market research.
Focus group, they call it.
Well, I mean, the Alpha Quiz, only one person gets to play every day and everyone else has
to listen to it.
Hey, that's fine, mate.
That's great.
We all love it.
Yeah.
Yeah, do you?
4-4-8-7.
First question.
All right.
Question number one.
What is the capital of Puerto Rico?
Is it San Salvador, San Juan, or Santo Domingo?
Oh, they all start with San.
I say the last two.
Okay.
Any reason why?
They just sound most familiar.
Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico.
What was that last one?
Santo Domingo was last.
And then San Juan.
I feel like it's San Juan.
Yeah, same.
I feel like I've read that in the news.
Yeah, playing Carmen Sandiego back in the day.
You could end it up there.
In Puerto Rico.
Carmen Sandiego.
She was clocking up
the old airports
wasn't she
yeah
alright we're locking
in San Juan
yeah
that is correct
nice work team
you know what I think
I think one of the
bloody
the Jake Paul
or one of the Paul brothers
they live there
because it's a tax haven
oh
interesting
no tax in San Juan
really
no
so why don't we all
move over there
yeah alright question number two what New Zealand TV series It's a Texan San Juan. Really? No. So why don't we all move over there, eh?
All right, question number two.
What New Zealand TV series is hosted by Jane Keighley and Paul Glover?
Is it Location, Location, Location NZ, Country House Hunters NZ, or The Block NZ?
It's not The Block.
It's just recently they just hosted it.
Jane Keighley and...
Yeah, Jane Keighley and Paul Glover.
So it's not a block
So what's the other one? Location, location, location
Or Country House Hunters NZ
Is it our version of location, location?
Yeah
Isn't there one person though?
No, because there's always two and they're competing
About they're trying to take the families
And convincing them to
I'm going to go location, location, location
That is correct.
Yay!
Nice.
Okay, question number three.
Which character does Tom Cruise portray in the Mission Impossible movie series?
Ethan Hunt.
Yeah.
Nice, guys.
Well done.
Three from three.
Beauty.
Are you enjoying listening to this?
Four, four, eight, seven.
There's a few texts come through, actually.
Yeah?
And what's the vibe?
Yeah, I love you guys playing the New Zealand
Herald quiz
I root for you every day
and pitch in when you
ask for help
someone says
I like the morning quiz
with you my friends
someone says
you ruined the test
for me
oh yeah
yes
someone said
no it's shit
yeah
hi I love it
did you see
someone say yes
but mix it up
with Bandle please
oh Bandle was too hard
too hard for me I'm not mixing it up with another, Bandle was too hard. Too hard for me.
I might mix it up with another quiz.
Bandle was too hard.
Just because it was too hard for you.
I loved it.
Well, you were good at it.
Thank you for your feedback.
Really appreciate it.
Let's get one more.
Question four, then we'll go to a break.
Okay.
Which player has made the most appearances in Premier League history?
Is it James Milner, Ryan Giggs, or Gareth Barry?
I only know Ryanyan gigs yeah i've
only heard of ryan gigs as well does that mean he's made gareth barry sounds like a name i'd
make up to do a prank on the radio but then it could be like an old school sort of yeah
let's throw it out to the audience some are playing something at the shit let's throw it
out to them some we're ruining it for others know. Real mixed bag on the text there.
The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast.
Starting the day with the New Zealand Herald Daily Quiz.
Which 85% of the audience love listening to.
We've done the polls.
We have done some polls.
A few people not as keen, but hey, that's always going to be the case.
They are more accurate than the US polls, I tell you what. The presidential polls.
Now back to producer Ali, the quiz master.
All righty. What, the quiz master. Alrighty.
What, this is question number five, what is the name of Batman's
primary vehicle? Is it the Batride,
the Batmobile or the Batwing?
The Batwing. The Batwing?
Who's getting
that one wrong?
You've had two hours of sleep
I was like, are we going Batwing?
Batwing. Or maybe it's a new thing or something Are we going Batwing? Batwing And then I was like Maybe it's a new thing
Or something
I was like
Batwing
Batmobile
That is correct
I was like
You can't do sarcastic comedy
When you look so tired
Like that
Sorry
We're going to take you as serious
And I came in so blunt
Yeah
Okay
The silence between us all
Just
Really?
Our friends are dumbass
Oh no Hey that's a great answer But we might just put that one aside For a second The silence between us all just... Really? Our friends are dumbass.
Hey, that's a great answer, but we might just put that one aside for a second and let the adults talk it out for just a bit.
All right.
We're five for five.
Yes, nice work.
Okay, question number six.
Mount Karinchi, or Karinchi, I'm so bad at pronouncing,
is the highest volcano in which country? Philippines, Malaysia, or Karinci, I'm so bad at pronouncing, is the highest volcano in which country?
Philippines, Malaysia, or Indonesia?
Now it's spelt K-E-R-I-N-C-I, so it could be Karinci, Karinci, Karinki.
I love a confident quiz master.
That's what I love.
That's not even the question, how to pronounce the name.
It's more about where it's located.
So the Philippines, what were the other options?
Malaysia, did you say?
Yeah, Philippines, Malaysia, or Indonesia. It feels like an Indonesian thing, Malaysia or Indonesia?
It feels like an Indonesian thing, doesn't it?
You feel it in your loins?
Might be a little bit of casual racism there, but it feels Indonesian to me.
All right, you can lock that in.
That is correct.
Well done.
It's not Indonesian.
Okay, question number seven.
You're being Indonesian vibes, as the Gen Zers would say
Alright, question seven
How many inches are there in one metre?
Is it 26.55 inches, 39.37 inches or 50.21 inches?
No, inches
In a what? In a metre?
In a metre, yeah
And it's the 21, 26.5, did you say?
Yes, 26.55 or 39.37 or 50.21 in one metre.
Quick maths.
Do your quick maths.
Jeez.
I feel like I'm out of this game.
I'm terrible at anything mathematic.
No, but I don't.
You're not getting 50 of those in a metre.
But that's a metre, right?
Now, this is great for radio.
We're just holding our hands. That's about a metre. I, this is great for radio. We're just holding our hands.
That's about a metre. I've got my fingers out to an inch.
Well, then you measure your fingers in there.
I reckon there's about 20 in there.
Yeah, I would agree.
Okay.
How was that for some science?
Okay, let's go with the 21 then.
26.5. Is it higher? We're going for 26.55?
Yeah, let's go with it.
That's incorrect.
Is it the highest one? No, so it's the 26.55 Yeah let's go with it That's incorrect Is it the highest one?
No so it's the 39.55 So there's 2.5cm to an inch
And therefore it wouldn't be 50 obviously
I worked this out sort of roughly
But yeah it's like 2.5
Alright Stephen Hawking
Stephen Hawking
Big brain on you trying to work that out
How's MC9 mate?
There we go we've dipped out
That's the end of that quiz
It may never be back too
The hits, the Jono and Ben podcast
Coldplay the first of three
concerts in New Zealand, 57,000
people there, Megan yourself
and I went along, incredible, eh? Just amazing.
Where do we even start?
They have those wristbands that everyone knows about
that lights up. Kind of like ankle bracelets
I saw someone write today on a review.
They do kind of look like ankle bracelets.
But every concert should have them.
They're just incredible how it just brings
everyone together and lights up different
songs. Question though,
the lights draw
hearts in the crowd
so it's like
they must be like
geo tagged
or like how does it
know where you are
incredible stuff
AI mate
maybe it is AI
do you have to hand
the bands back
yeah well you're meant to
I mean I guess if you
really wanted to
you could take them away
there'd be a couple of
rogues who sneak a band
away
but they don't work
outside
the whole time you're there
they don't work
until certain songs
and then it comes on
and then yellow
it all lights up yellow and and then it flicks.
So they've timed it.
Not every song has bands.
They've got confetti.
They've got fireworks.
They've got 3D glasses.
Just an amazing spectacle.
Yeah.
Just incredible.
Unbelievable stuff.
I loved it.
So if you're going along, or if you can get some tickets over the next couple of days,
I couldn't recommend it enough.
It is just an incredible experience.
Chris Martin, lovely.
Just a lovely. Just a wholesome guy. It is just an incredible experience. Chris Martin, lovely. Just a lovely...
Just a wholesome guy.
It just seems like that, eh?
He did a part where he reads out people's signs in the crowd
and he brought them up on stage to sing with them.
And then there was another part where he focuses on people in the audience
and does a little song, a little poem about them.
Yeah, here's one I think you've got.
Have we got that one loaded in?
A girl who had a Superman... A superhero. Yeah, T-shirt them. Yeah, here's one I think you've got. Have we got that one loaded in? A girl who had a Superman t-shirt on.
Yeah.
And then he goes with someone else in the crowd
and do a little song of them and another one like that.
It was actually really, really cool as well.
Charming British gentleman.
You want some illicit audio?
I think I've got some audio from when they first came out at the start
with me just prattling away over the top of it.
Kind of like it was radio for some reason.
Are you doing commentary?
Just briefly.
I saw you doing that.
Just briefly.
And then I'd stop.
Yeah, but this is the start of it.
All right.
Here's some recording.
A list of recording from Coldplay.
It's amazing.
About a light.
Got bracelets.
It's going off.
Here we go.
All right.
Chris Martin taking away.
It's Coldplay.
You're at Eden Park.
You're on the hits.
There's a person next to you like, yeah, I can see everything you're describing.
Yeah.
But it just was just an unbelievable experience to go along last night.
Incredible.
And there was one great moment because he's going around the crowd
and he's talking to all the different areas as well.
And then he was like, you over there in the AA insurance part.
And I was like, oh, AA insurance would be loving this.
Oh, yeah.
The guy who signed off or the girl who signed off on that.
Told you that Eden Park deal was going to pay off one day, team.
Chris Martin just side-checked AA Insurance.
I put my good name to that Eden Park deal.
He even said at one stage, Chris Martin,
it's good to be like a British person here on Eden Park
and not be spanked by the All Blacks as well,
which is normally what happens.
Yeah, wonderful.
So get along.
If you get a chance, I talked to someone yesterday
who just got tickets on the day yesterday.
What?
They managed to get tickets on the day.
I don't know if someone couldn't go or whatever,
so there probably is opportunities to get along.
Is it worth waiting outside Eden Park
and maybe beating up someone for their tickets?
Would you say the concert is that good?
I think Chris Martin would probably frown upon that.
Yeah, the vibe is all about love.
He goes around, he thanks everyone from security,
people cleaning the floors, the parents picking people up.
Just heartfelt.
I don't know if it's quite the vibe of beating up.
It's probably worth a court case,
but I wouldn't say beating up someone.
Maybe politely go, hey, I will use violence.
You pitch it.
Don't actually use the violence, but get the ticket.
The threat of violence.
The hits. The Jono and Ben podcast.
Hey, we thought, hey, well, we can't
listen to the actual recording of
Mariah Carey singing. The great song. The great song
that is All I Want for Christmas.
So, Megan, you had a wonderful alternative.
I thought maybe we could almost
treat people to this when
they dip out. Oh, so the loser version of the song.
Since you've been doing such a fantastic job singing the Venga Boys music.
But my Uncle John from Jamaica, he keeps calling every day.
That's my favourite.
It brings me so much joy.
Am I singing a punchline?
My Uncle John from Jamaica, like the opposite of Jamaica.
I didn't know we had an artist in our midst.
We don't.
Definitely not me.
So we present to you Ben Boyce.
Oh, God.
I did this one take, one take only, and my timing was awful.
Let's not play the whole.
Let's play a little bit.
Oh, no, don't stop in the start.
This is the instrumental.
This doesn't count.
Hi.
Don't want a lot for Christmas.
Oh, geez, I've gone too fast.
Is that the... Oh, there is just one thing I need.
And I don't
care about the presents
underneath
the Christmas tree.
That was a lot slower than normal.
I just want you for my own.
Can I say, we don't need the feedback in between the adverts.
Yeah, you should.
Just turn his microphone off.
I'm trying to enjoy it.
More than you could ever know.
Make my wish come true.
All I want for Christmas.
A bit early.
All I want for Christmas. That's why. Oh, I want for Christmas.
That's why I did it a second time, Megan.
Is you.
That took a long time to get into this, Matt.
And then it makes out the bass.
No take backs.
No take two.
I don't want a lot for Christmas.
There is just one thing I need. And I don't care a lot for Christmas There is just one thing I need
And I don't care about the presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I don't need to
Okay, okay, that's enough.
So when you hear that,
when you hear that,
it was not the whole thing.
Dear God, we can't play the whole thing again.
Can you go to the end bit?
I'll try to.
But yeah,
I love the backing singers. We'll try to. But yeah, I love the backing singers
are like,
we'll try to help you out,
mate.
And no.
You can't help me out.
Applause won't make me happy
with a toy on Christmas Day.
Oh God,
okay.
So if you are playing the game,
4487 on the text
when you're out
and when everyone's out,
we'll play the actual version
and not that version
of Mariah Carey.
The hits,
the Jono and Ben podcast.
We'll play incredible scenes at Eden Park.
Started the whole thing with a haka.
So, Megan, you recorded it?
Yeah, they took to the...
I don't even know who to credit for the kapa haka group,
but they took to the stage and everyone was involved.
I know who to credit for that audio.
That is Megan Pappas.
Yeah, recording.
Journalism at its finest.
It was incredible.
From the bracelets they have, the light-up bracelets,
the balloons, the fireworks, the 3D glasses,
everything was there.
Puppets, even.
Yeah, it was.
There was puppets.
The logistics were just like,
what goes on to put together a console like that and to bring it to New Zealand,
to tell us more about it,
is Nick Saundler.
He's the CEO of Eden Park
and he joins us this morning.
Good morning, Nick.
Thanks so much for joining us.
Good morning.
How are you?
We're doing all right.
What a spectacular show last night, Eden Park.
What an experience, eh?
You said, I saw you as I walked inside
and you said this is the one of,
if not the best concert you'd seen.
You'd seen it already
and it did not disappoint.
There is just every element to the show,
and you see young children
and you're seeing grandparents at the event.
It exceeds everyone's expectations.
Well, it's pretty amazing considering
it's such a phenomenal show.
Oh, I can imagine.
I imagine a huge success for Eden Park.
Now, I just live a couple of streets away.
Can you do me a favour and just turn it down a bit?
Friday and Saturday. I didn't realise this was the complaints department. Park. Now, I just live a couple of streets away. Can you do me a favour and just turn it down a bit? Friday
and Saturday. I didn't realise this
was the complaints department.
What are you complaining about? Free concerts?
A little bit pitchy.
No, it was amazing.
What does it take to put on a
concert like that? Because you go along last night, and they
had everything. Light up bracelets,
fireworks, confetti,
just a huge stage of screens.
The bikes to power the thing?
I mean, what are we talking to put something on?
Well, we talk about having a game plan and seven values and behaviors, customer service,
attention to detail, exceeding expectations, all of these things.
Often people come to events and they forget their mortgage.
They come, they experience, and they go.
And in the background, there's 3,000 staff that are delivering that event.
And the relentless planning takes many years often.
When you look at Coldplay, they've been touring since 2022.
They're the biggest rock band in the world.
It's the biggest tour in history.
Their team are just such a delight to deal with. And you just leave
with a sense of pride after a big night and all of us left pretty early. You can imagine
there's a fair bit of cleaning that goes on.
Yeah. So when do they start bringing, like when does the first track arrive with Chris
Martin's clothes and bits and pieces and then you start loading everything in?
So we were about seven days out. You have things like
flooring that goes down for
turf protection. There's a whole
range of elements there. Then you've got to consider
that they had shows in both Melbourne
and Sydney. So it's the logistics of
coming across from Australia. Often
we're either the first or the last show
and we've got to remember that
Eden Park for 120 years couldn't
have concerts. What was just insane.
Oh, people will be very excited about going this weekend after, you know,
everything that everyone said about it, playing this weekend, Friday and Saturday night.
What was the one moment for you?
Did you have a moment?
For me, it was when Yellow came on and all the bracelets lit up yellow.
And I was just like, this is incredible.
And just seeing everyone singing.
But did you have a moment?
Yeah, well, Sky for the Stars was my wedding dance with my wife.
And Coldplay is a band that we've seen previously,
but it was always on our bucket list to get to Eden Park.
So we had a son only five weeks ago, and he was back at house.
My father-in-law had flown over at 2 a.m. yesterday to do some babysitting,
so my wife would come along to the show.
And just to stand there, we were just so proud.
And there wasn't a person that didn't come up to us
when they were leaving and saying,
thank you so much for the experience.
And, yeah, it makes you feel so proud,
and the team at Eden Park and what we've delivered.
You've got to remember this was show number 173.
They've been touring for close to three years.
So to be able to come to a venue that has that mana is
something that um is really special too he said that didn't he last night he's like we had to go
through like 172 your rehearsals just for this gig but i think we're good to go which i don't
they definitely were yeah well that's he said i can tell that this is one of my favorite shows and
um as i say to think that we weren't able to hold concerts. And now the lineup that we've had since,
starting with 660,
and we had a number of band members there last night,
and they were the first band to perform at Eden Park.
And then people talked about the Pink Show
and how phenomenal that was.
But I think last night, that's been my favorite.
It's like putting on a party.
You have people over for a barbecue,
but you're doing it for 57,000 people.
It must be that sense of anything,000 people, you know?
It must be that sense of like anything could go wrong,
you hope it doesn't.
Yeah, you do get nervous because you go,
there's 50,000 people's lives in your hands and you want to make sure that they're safe
and they have a great experience.
Well, there was a lot of love in that place last night
and I think the crowd was so well behaved.
Yeah, everyone had such the best time.
No, thank you so much.
And yeah, there was such great spirit in that crowd.
And the love is something that we talk about our team,
the love that they have for the park.
I'm sure now we have another 50 plus thousand people
who have another connection with Eden Park
and Chris Martin and the team.
We'll be pumped to be back on Friday night.
Well, thank you so much for your time this morning.
Very early after a concert, late-night concert,
so we really appreciate it, Nick Saunders.
Thanks again for helping bring Colby to New Zealand.
Thanks so much, guys.
Really appreciate it.
