The John O'Ben and Megan podcast, thanks to Dilma.
Goodness really does taste great.
Dilma, making the world a better tea.
John O'Ben and Megan, coming to you live from Eden Park this morning
as we are gearing up to kick off Kids Campbell for 2025.
Yeah, we're trying to raise a million dollars for Kids Can.
If you don't know what kids can do, they provide jackets, shoes, food for schools across
Altaire, over 1,500 schools they service.
There's over 50 on the wait list.
And these kids, they need to be warm.
to be fed to be able to learn.
And yeah, we were there when we dropped off jackets.
We got to actually do the jacket drop off and their faces.
It went to every single kid at the school.
Beautiful.
Beautiful faces.
It was weird when I said that to the kids, though.
It was.
Your beautiful little faces, sweet, sweet faces.
Now, you might be noticing that there's a skinny broadcaster missing at the moment.
Ben Boyce, he will be with us after 7 o'clock, but at the moment mentally and physically
preparing for handball.
I know what he's like with these.
things. You know, people come into these challenges at different, from different positions. Ben
likes to steer the ball down, steer the handball, deep into the handball, so I'll become one with
the ball. And that's all I had to tell on that. I was nervous yesterday when he was like,
what time do we have to be there? We can have a little sleep in, can't we? I was like, ah!
Well, in all honesty, the 24 hours starts from 8 o'clock. That's when we kick off. And just
to set the scene, Eden Park, empty stadium. Imagine Eden Park, but imagine no one
it. Like when the blues we're playing
and they're losing.
Wow!
And now on the billboards.
We're on the huge
billboard. 24-hour
handball-a-thon. Wow.
There's no one here to see it.
It's breakfast. Yeah. It's like we're doing
a concert and no one's turned up.
I've never been in here before.
The room we're currently in. Is this a
commentary box? This is a
conference room. This is what you do.
This is where you come if you own a business.
Okay. If you're successful in life,
You come here and you eat cold meats, hot meats, and you drink the finest of wines and watch sport.
So you will be bringing you up to date with where we are with kids can.
So far the donations, you can text kids to 9-3-3.
That's an automatic $3 donation.
Yeah, even though we haven't actually started playing, that kicks off at 8 o'clock.
You can make the donation now, kids to 9 through through the instant $3 donation.
Should we give an update next?
Yeah, we'll tell you where we're at.
We're starting at a pretty good base.
A million dollars is the goal over the next.
24 hours you know a million dollars 24 hours this is Mike Hosking money we're
trying to make over the next day we can do it has anyone put a call through to him we
will we will bully Hosking all right to make you donate John O'Ben and Megan the
podcast that's we are live from Eden Park this morning a beautiful picture this
morning isn't it yeah lovely frost on the field the Garden in Eden and the Garden
and Eden and the massive billboard the digital billboard here just got our giant
Big gorgeous faces, plastered all over.
It's a lot to stare at first of the world.
I think I was attempting a moustache too, which was regrettable.
But now I can see it in 4K.
You can see that.
Yeah, I'd picktales.
There's lots.
Really large.
Anyway, I was hoping that we weren't going to use that photo.
But anyway, we have now, but we're here for a very important cause.
24 hours of handball.
It's going to start 8 o'clock this morning for 24 hours as we try and race as much money
as we can for kids can.
A lot of donations coming through already, which is great.
We did want to give a tele-up date.
I think we're over, are we $95,000 already, Troy, producer Troy?
$95,000, there we go.
$95,000 we haven't kicked off yet, but if you do want to make a donation,
you can do that, kids, to $933.
That's an instant $3 donation.
There was a big 40K dump overnight.
Oh, wow.
Yeah, from an anonymous donor.
I don't care where it comes from, where this cash comes from.
I have no scruples when it comes to charity.
Who dumps 40K and doesn't say anything?
A legend.
Like, I would be like, guys.
I'd put in 40, that.
You want some...
Well, that's because we're soulless media people.
You know, there are just some decent human beings out there
who'll do it for the love of charity.
I see overnight, too.
Luxo, Prime Minister,
had a photo with Donald Trump
at the ASEAN conference.
Now, the first comment...
It was APEC.
APEC, sorry. One of the conferences.
One of the acronym conferences.
And the first comment on Luxon's Instagram
was like, it's great to see Luxon
visited the Madame Tussard's Wax Museum.
It looks like he's having a photo with a wax figure.
It's just because Trump's doing like a grimacy smile.
And the thumbs up too, right?
Yeah.
He is, I know it's just the source of common comedic banter,
but boy, he really faked hands that face, doesn't he?
Yeah.
When you see it in photo form like that.
Because I think they were talking about if he, if he's not meant to get another term,
but he would be the oldest ever president, older than Biden if it happened.
So he's, you know, he's close to Biden's age.
But looks very, like, it actually looks.
Well, I guess it's a smokescreen of all the fake tan and all the orange stuff really makes them look a lot younger.
I feel like there's about 14 pegs behind his head just holding that face in place.
Maybe we should have gone with that technique for the Kids Campbell billboard here.
Yeah, looking at that, I don't think we can talk right now.
To be honest, he looks better than I do up there.
You are our Biden.
Yeah, thank you.
Thank you.
Not too bad yourself.
All right.
next we'll continue on leading into the 8 o'clock kickoff kickoff kickoff pat off
bounce off yeah probably not the last one bounce off bounce off sounds good
this morning if you want to donate as megan said before you can just text kids to 933
it's an instant three dollar donation you know depending where you buy your hot drinks in the
morning that's half a price of a hot drink and we're not asking you to sign up for 12 months
or anything like that just a one-off donation and if you can give more go to kitts campbell
dot org at nz we
John O'Ben and Megan, the podcast.
The Hits.
The Hits Kids Can Ball.
Yes, we are raising money for Kids Can.
For 24 hours, we're going to be playing the schoolyard game of Handball.
Four Square.
We're calling it Kids Can Ball today, and it starts at 8 o'clock.
We're going to go nonstop to try and raise as much money as we can to help out Kiwi kids in need.
And a whole lot of celebrities are going to be joining us throughout the day.
And I think we've got one of them who came last year joining us on the phone right now.
Yeah, it's Ganesh Raj.
You know Ganesh from Eat Well for Less.
morning welcome thank you so much for having me y'all what's the plan what's going on
well we've managed to talk you back into playing handball again you came out and joined us last
time and you know played some handball got a massage as well from the massage table and
it helped us raise a lot of money for kids can my massage personally helped raise a lot of money
for kids can yeah you're on that message table for at least 90 minutes that was saving children
alone and so can we sign you up for another shift I have a few questions
If that's okay
If that's okay
And based on the last time
You guys did such a great job
And by a great job
I meant the massage table
And what I want to know
This year is
I just want to know a little bit
About the actual massage technique
And the qualifications of the mousseau
Which one of you three has that info?
I don't even know
Have we even got a masseuse?
Have we got confirmation on a
Because
Oh look I'm not
I haven't been in charge of booking it
I don't know
Nice
Wait a minute
This is what I've been looking
forward to
I'll bring some deep heat along
I'll give you a rub
if it gets desperate
right
We want them to do it
Benjamin
Benjamin no
Ben it'd be big on the
chopping technique
Yeah
Well that sounds like
chopping's good
Shiaatsu
Yeah
Ben can you chop
Can you chop
Can you chop Kinesh
No
Yeah
God
It would be so fast
It'd be like
Is this done
There you go
That's enough
I'm not a big massage
person
You know
No one's got
Top of that
I massage
Where you stand on my back
And you do
that kind of
rocking with your knees dug
into my rear hamstrings.
While we're playing handball for the kids,
Ganesa's going to get massaged for the kids.
I don't know if you want to say that.
I feel like, let's put it this way.
Once again, I want my massage
to raise the most amount of money
for kids. I can't wait, team. I'm going to come in the
afternoon just to gee you guys up, you know,
because you've got that 2 o'clock,
2.30. Are you going to bring us some
food? I was going to, until
you blew the surprise.
Oh, because I had a serious question,
because I was pestering a lot of celebrities
about coming down in Hamish Kerr, who won
High Jump in the Olympics.
He was like, I can't make it, unfortunately, I'm away,
but have you got a nutrition plan?
And I was like, oh, no.
So what does that mean?
What's the nutrition plan, Ganesh?
Leave it to me.
Oh, good, okay, guys.
No, look, but I will bring special treat,
but only for the three of you,
that's right.
Well, last time you gave Ben a special treaty
He went missing for a week
Yes
Yes, he did
And it was his fault
We need you down there with this energy
It's coming
Oh, okay, Ganesh
There we go, not just here for the massages as well
Well, make sure there is a massage
Don't talk all the talk
And then no master
Oh, Ganesh, look forward to seeing
on Thursday, mate, thank you.
Absolutely, guys, have a fantastic
Thank you, man.
And that is Ganesh Raj.
One of the many celebrities
are going to pop down and join us today
as we play 24 hours a handball for kids can
from 8 o'clock.
But next, because we're in a stadium,
an epic stadium, we thought we'd throw things back
with stadium anthems this morning.
Oh, I reckon I've got a goodie.
You do.
Yeah, she's probably going to win.
She's probably going on.
We'll find out.
Next, it's up to you.
John O'Benn and Megan, the podcast.
The Hats.
Playing 24 hours a handball from 8 o'clock this morning.
We get into it with our mate.
Jordan Watson, how to dad.
We're raising money for Kids Can.
Trying to help out Kiwi Kids in need.
We're trying to raise a million dollars,
which is a huge uphill battle for us,
but nothing in comparison to what so many kids are going through
each and every day around the country.
So that's happening 8 o'clock this morning.
If you can help out, there's text numbers.
You can text kids to 933, make an instant $3.3 donation
or give more at kidscanball.org.n.
Head to that's breakfast, too, if you want to see all the imagery.
I know radio is a multifaceted medium nowadays,
and it's amazing here.
Eden Park, we're broadcasting out to the big empty field.
We're going to be on the side of the field.
Right by the goal.
Yeah, one end of the pitch there.
And really excited to rip into it at 8 o'clock this morning.
We were going to talk to an ultramarathon runner.
But unfortunately, she's like, sorry, I'm out running an ultra marathon.
Can I call you afterwards?
So I don't know how long they take, but I imagine they take quite a while.
So she will hopefully join us soon.
And, you know, you get a little bit worried going into these things
because, you know, it's a long time to stay away.
There's no real way to prepare yourself.
for them. I think, Megan, I don't know.
Well, you guys did it last year.
I tapped in and tapped out.
So this is the first time I'm officially doing 24 hours, but...
Your major concern is your week-week pelvic floor.
Yeah.
How many times you can have to go to the laboratory?
You've mentioned it multiple times.
I don't know how many times you've been this morning, but I've already been a few.
But I was...
I think I'm slightly prepared having two little kids.
That's true.
I don't get a lot of sleep on driving at the time.
What, looking after us, do you relate to two little kids?
Yeah, yeah.
But I say that now, ask me tomorrow.
I get worried too, you know, because, you know, when I was young as you used to,
and I've just had something in my head for about the last week,
because last week we did our alpha quiz live, a pub quiz at the pub.
And, you know, it was lovely.
We went along and we're talking to everyone that came along.
And one of the ladies who was there, you know, having a, I think a white claw drink
or something in the hand was like, hey, I used to watch you guys on TV.
And you're like, oh, that's cool.
That's nice, you know, and have a conversation.
And then she goes, yeah, I stayed up late.
you're like, okay, okay, right, and then...
The 10 a.m. show, 10 p.m. show.
You're like, okay, all right.
I'm thinking while she was, how young.
She said, yeah, I think I was about eight or nine when I would stay up late.
And nothing makes you feel older that when someone is sipping back on a white claw,
alcoholic drink, and saying, it used to watch on TV and is now drinking,
and obviously was eight or nine at the time, you're like, wow.
Yeah. We always said that there were, you know, a lot of children watch that show,
and that was shocking parenting on behalf of their parents
to let them.
But I'll tell you who makes me feel old every single day.
Producer Grace.
Producer Grace was probably a fetus, a fetus when,
maybe a fertilised egg, when I was having my 21st birthday.
That concerns me, Grace.
Do you want me to comment on this?
Yeah, too.
Yeah, no, 21st, yeah.
I wasn't even born.
I wasn't around.
It's kind of our age works, John.
I always say, John is old enough to be my dad.
I just want everyone to know that.
I just want to put that out in that atmosphere.
They argue like it too.
Yeah, a dad who made a terrible life decisions when he was...
Whoa.
And I regret having you, okay?
I regret every part of it.
Well, hopefully we're making good life decisions today.
We're trying to play handball.
I'm going to my life, Grace.
8 o'clock this morning, stick with us.
John O'Ben and Megan, the podcast.
The hits.
We're about to embark on 24 hours of Handball,
raising money for kids can, a fantastic organisation.
And there helps Kiwi kids around the country with jackets, with food, with shoes.
And Megan, yeah.
I was just going to say one of the fantastic principles we spoke to,
the line that always sticks with me is that children shouldn't bear the burden of poverty.
Yeah.
Because they're just kids.
We just need them to enjoy themselves and live life
and not stress about stuff they shouldn't even be thinking about.
Yeah, don't start stressing until you're our age, okay?
That's what you should be doing.
Now, we are talking to some finely tuned athletes heading into this mammoth event over 24.
four hours and one of those finally tuned athletes.
I'll tell you a lot of athletes let themselves go after their professional career.
This guy's got muslier and fitter.
It's Monty Beatham from the Warriors, Morena.
Morning, Timor, just so heartwarming and so inspiring hearing you guys speak about the cause
and the purpose and what you're doing.
So congratulations, you guys are absolute edges, man.
Let's go!
Oh, thanks, bossy.
Now, Monty, you played in your big international league games, big Warriors games,
your boxed as well.
I mean, I'm not going to compare what we're doing by any stretch to that.
But what gets you through those times when things are tough?
I think purpose.
I think purpose really does.
It's the last thing on your mind, but you go bed at night.
The reason you get up for in the morning when you talk about these kids,
and I can hear it sort of in your voice and even quivering on the lips at you.
You really care about these kids.
You want to make a real difference, and that's what you do.
You know, talk about athletes and time and what they've been able to do
and give some people some joy.
But what you guys are doing in this 24-hour period is absolutely huge.
I'll tell you something, Mark Graham, the absolute legend of rugby leg across.
It was a tough man, played with all the injuries under the sun.
He used to tell us in our debut year, and I played for the Warriors back in 1999,
he said, mate, just tell you what, there's no better place to die there on the field.
So if you get to that point where you can't continue and you die, you'll go down the legion.
So at the Field of Dreams, which is Eden Park, I'm not saying you should go out there and die,
please don't do that, although you'd be martyrs forever.
I'm not going to lie.
That's not where I thought that was.
Where you feel like falling over perhaps or just feeling a little bit sick or maybe just, you know, losing consciousness at times just to show how much you care.
That's good, Monty.
Well, the ironic thing is we're not actually allowed on the grass.
So if we die, it would be a side of field.
I'll get a fine.
I'll get a fine.
Next two, end of park.
He died on the astrotube.
Now, Monty, I know you're a father as well and it must be a heartbreaking view to hear stories that kids like this are going to school with, you know, no warm clothes, no food in their stomachs.
No, absolutely.
I mean, the kids are our future and, you know, you just go out there and it's quite often,
you know, when you're doing, done through hard times yourself and you're just feeling a little bit down,
you go out there and you go past schools or you're walking in the park and you hear the kids scream
and you hear their innocence and you see how much they love life and they live for life
and how innocent they are.
And, you know, you know, when you come home to your kids at night and you think you've had a hard day,
it puts everything into perspective.
So what you're doing for these wonderful kids in the next generation is absolutely huge over you out there.
text i've already texted a few and i shouldn't be doing that because one in z is my phone
sponsor uh through the warriors so i'm going to be in trouble i want to get in a lot of trouble
the next uh month or so we appreciate we'll keep that of mind why are we doing it great cause and
also uh keep in mind uh luke mccuff's thinking around for the warriors that's some good news as well
too that's been keeping me happy over the last week absolutely i hope you got you
jump underneath mate they'll drive you through and of course the uh the double header the kiwi
league double header this Sunday to at Eden Park
as well.
I thought to get a plug into that.
Sure. It's going to be great. Can't wait.
We'll be down there. I'll be calling the game live, the action
live, so it's going to be a lot of fun. But in the meantime,
the main event is you guys doing your thing.
Fantastic job. Keep it
up and everyone out there. Texas support
a wonderful course. Well, thank you
Monty. Appreciate your time and you're
great advice this morning.
Thanks, Tim. Thanks, Monty. There we go, Megan.
Leave it all out. If you're going to die of no better
place than here. I actually got a bit
teary at the start of that, and then he was like going
into dying and I was like oh no
what? If you are going to die
can you just do it in the toilets over there
please because I don't want to see it
I don't want you to bring the vibes yeah
let's have a bit clean up
John O'Ben and Megan
The podcast
The Hits
I'm from Eden Park playing 24 hours
a handball this morning
raising money for kids can next
another sporting legend joining us
Ruby Toey
Wow Ruby Toey's going to be coming on the show
I don't know why I sound surprised
I know that's written in front of you
I got the calendar invite
Hopefully she knows that
Then we'll find out if Ruby joins us next, here on the hits.
We've got Shannon with us on the phone.
Now, Shannon is here to inspire us.
I can inspire your dead cold hearts, you too.
Shannon, you run an ultra-marathon every single day before work, you legend.
Hey, how are you? I do indeed.
Yeah, we've spoken before.
Yes, we have.
It's incredible.
What are you up to now?
How many ultramarathons in a row have you done?
Well, I've done 668 today is 669.
Haven't started yet.
Got a bit of work to do.
over in Bali so time difference is a bit of a change five hours behind so I will start
to have to do a bit of work and then I'll get out there so you're on a holiday and you're still
running ultramarathons five hours is it 2.30 in the morning 2 30 in the morning yeah oh my god I'm so
sorry okay so you've got and you've got work to do you're talking to us you're doing an ultramarathon
sorry how long is an ultramarathon like for anyone listening right now how long is that
An ultramarathon is anything long than a marathon.
So it's more than that.
But for what I'm doing, I'm doing 50 over 50K a day, so I do 51K a day.
So really the definition is like more than 50K.
And were you trying to hit 700?
I'm trying to hit 700.
Yeah, I've got 30 November.
So number 700 will be running Fangare with a whole bunch of people, which will be fun.
She's running 350 7Ks a week.
That is...
It's wild.
And you're doing a job as well.
You're a lawyer, right?
I am, yeah, I'm a criminal lawyer, so, yeah, it's a lot of work.
But at the moment, I was taking a couple of weeks out in Bali.
It's still doing a bit of work, but having a bit, you know, right from New Zealand.
And, yes, rainy season over here, but that's right.
Yeah, no good, sorry, the old rain's affecting the cell phone there.
But I think we've got, how's Ben's case going, too, that you're...
I've been running away from him.
an ultramarathon away from that.
Dude, if anyone on the show had a case for you, what do you talk about?
I'm trying to divert.
Don't talk about my case.
For the courts to decide.
For the courts to decide.
Hey, well, Shannon, congratulations on, you're amazing.
Can I ask, you know, because it's going to get tough for us.
And I'm not, again, not comparing what we do, what we're going to do to compare to what you do.
But what do you do?
What gets you through those times?
Because it must be tough.
Some days you're feeling sick.
Yeah.
You're pushing through.
What advice have you got for us?
It is tough.
I think that once you've started, you'll be able to be able to be.
be fine, but
maybe just don't make of the end
and just realize that the time
is going to pass by anyway
and just try and live in that moment.
I know it's really hard to do,
but you try and not
turn to head and just know that
the very bad at the same.
So you guys will do great.
Thank you.
I think that the old coverage there
I've got about 70% of that inspiration.
We're not enough of it too.
It would be enough to pull me through.
But listen, Shannon,
really do appreciate your time.
Enjoy, enjoy Bali.
And thank you for getting up at bloody
two, three in the morning.
Shees.
No, thanks.
for getting me up, guys.
I appreciate it.
You're very welcome, geez.
Well, she goes through a pair of running shoes every 10 days.
That's great.
I've had the ones I'm wearing for like three years.
John O'Bennon and Megan, the podcast.
The Hits.
And now we're getting some advice from people that have achieved great things in the
sporting world.
This is as close as we come, Megan.
Playing 24 hours of handball here at Eden Park.
Someone who's won World Cup at Eden Park joins us right now.
Ruby Toey, good morning.
what's up my friends how we're going we're nervous ruby we're nervous we're going to have to stay awake for 24 hours it's not even taking into account i don't know really how to play handball well you're gonna learn i guess how are you
Oh look I'm really excited
Hey I'm so stoked you guys
Are kicking this off man
And it's at the home of the greatest sport in the world
So locations pretty lit this year
Yeah well Eden Park
I mean yeah
It's intimidating walking out here right now
Because it's such an epic stadium
And there's no one here
What's it like where there's a full crowd
And everyone's cheering or booing
Oh look one thing I really like to do
Is actually go to the stadiums before anyone fills it up
And you know
Just take a deep breath in
and feel, you know, the environment, the aura, the place.
Have you had a couple of RAC-ups this morning already?
Well, no, that's what we're hoping for you.
Well, we've had Monty Betham.
He gave us a pretty good pep talk, but he told us not to die out here.
Yeah, well, he said if you're going to die, it's not a bad place to die.
That's what a warrior's coach once told him.
What's some good advice that we can take from you, Ruby, heading into this?
Oh, hey, look, guys, I just, you know, remember that when you go out there,
every time you get tired,
every time you're going to put your hands on your knees
and be like, oh, I don't know if I can do this.
Just be like, who could do something like this?
Who can?
And I want you to say, kids can.
Kids, yeah.
I mean, because you have over the years,
you've worked with Kids Can and been a great supporter of them,
you know, because it breaks your heart to see that there are Kiwi kids,
you know, going to school even today,
that are hungry, that are cold, you know,
and they have bad shoes or no jacket.
Absolutely.
and I don't know if you've ever done school pick-up
when it's absolutely bucking down
and it does suck when there's a couple of kids
you know, you're just like, oh, I hope they forgot them
but the reality is they didn't forget them
they actually don't have them.
The shoes, the jackets, the food items,
it's crazy the amount that kids can is given already.
But the cool thing about this is it's, you know,
handballathon, it's a Kiwi attitude,
what can we do, there's always something we can do
so if people can jump on that hotline, text through,
you can go on the website, you know,
and help make our country a better place
because the reality is
we've seen it with our own eyes
there are kids out there that just need a little bit
extra help to do things like

I might pop in later in the afternoon.
We'll see.

I'd love a red streak in my hair like yours, Rooms, all right?
Past a look sharp or something.
Grab me some temporary die.
Ruby Toey, joining us.
Next, we're going to get things underway.
I think we've got a very special anthem.
Because, you know, we're about to play here at Eden.
John O'Bennon and Megan, the podcast.
The hits.
Oh, it's getting close.
hours of handball we're about to get underway here at Eden Park raising money for kids can
and being at Eden Park you know we thought you know what happens at Ian Park with big
games before a big game yeah and we're going about to pay 24 hours of a big game of
handball right yeah and national anthems happen at Eden Park so here we go oh no no no not
you can we haven't even get past the first oh no we know where it's going it's
Pitchie from the first night.
Joining us is Jaya, good morning.
Good morning, good morning.
Lovely.
Now, Jay is 15 years old, and you're from Alfredson School, are you, Jayah?
Yes.
Now, Jayas has sung the national anthem on this very turf a couple of times, haven't you?
Yes, I have.
I can't really remember what game when I did it.
I just know, because usually when I sing, everything's a blur.
I just, like, know that I've sung, and then, like, that's.
Like that's it.
That's like me.
That's like me after every show.
That's like me after six beers, Joe.
I know I was singing.
Can't be aware I want.
I want to suck.
Do you get nervous though coming out, you know, in front of a car?
Do you remember that feeling at all?
Yeah.
I feel like at any performance, I'm always nervous.
But I think it's a good thing.
It just shows that I really want to do well.
And especially for the national anthem, it's a big thing to sing,
especially for my country.
And so it's just a privilege.
And I think being nervous is a great thing.
a great thing. Nerves show you care. That's what I always think.
Exactly. What an amazing young young adults you are. Now kids can you know it's a great
charity isn't it? It's beautiful. I did have um a song where kids can literally
sponsored me so I'm like anything for the kids I'm a kid myself so like a kid doing it
for the kids yeah damn right well thank you for being here today it means a lot for us
and for kids can we're about to get underway we
I thought, yeah, it'd be great to have the anthem, so if you want to take it away right now, the anthem.
Here we go, Jayah, 15 years old.
I know, ah,
that's all the other than I,
oh,
I know,

24 hours of handball
Raising money for Kids Can
We're making our way
To the Handball Court
Let's kick things up again
Here on the Hits
10, 9, 8, 7, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
Live from Aiden Pack.
The hits Kids Can Ball, 24 hours to go.
Yes, we're getting into it right now.
It starts for 24 hours raising money for Kids Can.
Megan, look, puffed you just walked from the tunnel to the handle court.
No, that was a sign.
Like, I'm actually terrible at handball, but okay, here we go.
John O'Benn and Megan, the podcast.
The Hats.
Playing 24 hours of handball here at Eden Park in the middle of a handball game.
I'm out.
Am I out?
I don't know.
I was about to say I'm really impressed with you, talking and playing.
Yeah, and I think I'm out.
I'm thinking about, guys, but we're doing it for a great cause.
Kids Can, if you want to donate, you can text Kids to 933.
But right now, a very special surprise.
The Hits Kids Can Ball.
It's the Cookie Time Power Hour.
Cookie Time will match every.
Every donation you make this hour.
Cheers, cookie time.
Yeah, it's the power, power, power hour.
Now, cookie time.
We have, is it the cookie muncher on the phone?
No, cookie muncher is busy making cookies right now in the factory right now.
Someone's got to do it.
Yeah.
So we've got the cookie time munches right-hand man guy with us from cookie time.
How are you, mate?
Oh, good, thank you.
Hey, how exciting it is to be in the power hour at the early phase of the 24 hours.
Oh, this is incredible.
So people are donating over the next hour, what are cookie time going to do?
Well, this hour is, we're cookie time doubling.
Any donations that are given.
Cookie time is doubling.
And the reason we can do that is because of the money that we've raised from Christmas cookies over the past few years.
Oh, that is incredible.
Now, I've always see those, you know, students hooking off the bus, the mini cookie times, which are just addictive.
They're shocking for me.
I can
apricot chocolate
Oh my god
That apricot chocolate
It's a small number
It's a small percentage of our sales
But the people that love apricot
Absolutely love apricot
Never take apricot away
There'll be a riot
It's kind of like the Turkish delight
Of the cookie world isn't it?
People who love it love it as well
No, that's good
It's so good
Well that's amazing
Thank you so much for your support
As I just get out of handball right now
Turns out of handball and talk
No, I doubt at the same time.
That means so much cookie time.
So if anyone wants to text right now,
they can text Kids to 933, make an instant $3.3 donation
or go to kidscampbell.org.n.zad and give a little more.
And cookie time will match the donations this hour.
That's incredible.
Yeah.
Well, we're thrilled to be doing it and go hard over the 24 hours.
The shenanigans have only, I'm sure, have only just begun.
I mean, Handball just brings out all those amazing memories of us older people,
school and the things that used to go down on the handball call were just uh yeah they're just legendary
yeah no it's good it's all downhill from here guy let's be honest but thank you so much really do
appreciate cookie time who are a platinum platinum partner with uh kids can doubling all donations
this hour already over a hundred thousand dollars which is phenomenal on the goal on the way to a
million yeah that's right that's why we're doing it for kids can uh so we'll get back into some
handball and we're back next we've got an olympic weightlifter with us at the moment oh you just got him to
move some stuff
we'll find out
he's feeling
John O'Bennon and Megan
the podcast
The Hits

It's hard to do both

We're here with
Olympic athletes
David Lettie
Welcome my friend
What up
What up
What up
Now David
David's professional
Weightlifter
And I apologise
We had to move a bench
Before and I thought
Well there's no better
person to move the bench
Thank you for that
No worries, no worries. We had a lot of help here, so it's all good.
What are you up to this weekend? I do need to move a few things around home.
Oh, sorry, and now I've got him out because I was interviewing him.
Sorry, David. Now, supporting kids can, important to you, mate?
100%. It's touchy, or what would you say, like a project for me, so I'm happy to be here and support and help.
Good on you, because a lot of kids need, need jackets, need shoes, need food.
It's sad to see and it's hard to see it happening.
But yeah, what the boys and the team here are doing is a great cause and very happy to be a part of it.
Well, thank you for coming down and supporting David Letty and Ben and Megan with the man who, this is his brainchild, how to dad, Jordan Watson, who came up with this whole idea.
Yeah, mate, yeah.
Are you regretting it now?
Yeah, man, no, no, you know, we're six minutes in and I've got this weird pinch in my left buttocks, but I'm feeling real good.
We did this last year, of course, and we've really stepped things up with Eden Park this year.
Can you believe we're here right now for 24 hours at Eden Park?
I don't know who you guys talk to, how you've made this happen, but look, I feel like an All Blacks rugby player, but actually, like, a level up from them.
I'm not a professional rugby player. I'm a professional handballer.
Well, we're doing it for a great course, Kiskan.
I mean, so much to you, Jordan.
You've been such great ambassador for this charity.
Yeah, I mean, I've been with them for seven years trying to throw my social weight behind it.
And the hardest thing is just getting cut through to people online and trying to get them to donate.
And, you know, you've seen around the world when you can come up with an idea and get like a radio station on board just helps it lift it that much more.
And this was the big brainchild of mine.
And it's come to fruition.
We've got schools on board that have been fundraising all month of October.
We've got you guys helping me harp on about it.
I'm harping on about it
and all this harping
makes a beautiful song on the harp
and it makes you donate, doesn't it?
Right now we're in the middle of the cookie time power hour
every donation until 9 o'clock
this morning will be matched up to $10,000
by cookie time which is incredible.
It does seem like a mammoth target million dollars
but I keep on harping on saying
if everyone just donates three dollars
if everyone just chucks in
$3, we know that times are tough at the moment
if everyone did that we'd hit it easily.
John O'Ben and Megan
The podcast. The Hits.
24 hours of handball raising money for kids can in the middle of the cookie time power hour before now at nine o'clock everything you donate will be doubled up to ten thousand dollars thanks very much to cookie time which is incredible it's the power hour
the hits kids can ball it's the cookie time power hour cookie time will match every donation you make this hour cheers cookie time yeah thanks so much to cookie time and that adorable cookie muncher himself uh for doing this he loves he loves munching cookies uh
Well done, Megan, who's moved to the position of King on the handball court.
And you're straightaway, you're out.
There we go.
As we line back up to go back out there again.
She's been dethroned like Prince Andrew.
I don't know how to serve anyway.
You can text Kids to 933 if you want to make an instant $3 donation.
But if you can give a little more, go to kitskhanball.org.
And donate right now.
Yeah, if you have donated, we'd love to hear from your 0-800.
The Hits the telephone number.
But we're joined now by the big dog, the big boss, the, what,
I was going to say, the prince.
Yeah, we can call him the Big Daddy.
Hello, Big Daddy.
Nick Becker from Auckland FC.
JBM, how are we?
It sounds like there's a lot.
There's a lot going on there, isn't there?
There is quite a lot going on.
It's quite hard to do radio and handball at the same time,
but it is for a wonderful cause, Nick.
It is a fantastic cause, yeah.
So well done for that.
It's awesome.
We should look to get it at one of our games.
You could do it across one of our games next year.
Handball.
That's a great idea at the Auckland FC.
Yeah.
That's a great idea.
Get you in the fans own there.
You could be part of the match day show.
This is why he's the Big Daddy.
He's an ideas, man.
Ideas like that.
Now, Auckland, FC, such an incredible first season last year.
They were minor premiers heading into the finals, which is awesome.
And back again for season number two, which is pretty exciting.
Absolutely, yeah, yeah.
We've had a great start in the season.
We were away on the first round.
We went to Melbourne, picked up a point there.
We still haven't lost at Amy Park, so pretty happy about that.
And then we won last week at Go Media in front of a fantastic crowd
of about 15,000 Auckland Sea fans,
and we're looking to go back to back with another game this Saturday.
Oh, that's lovely.
Now, Nick, I must ask you, and I hate to do this live on air.
How much will you donate a Ben Boy streaks across Eden Park right now?
Streaking for the kids.
It's got to be more than the fine we'll get.
You can name his price.
Yeah, I think we can work on something else, surely, Nick.
Is there something else that we can do?
Maybe that's a lot less embarrassing for me?
No, I think you should do it.
He's like, you know, we've got some tickets
so we can maybe donate or something,
but you're like, no, just streak.
Okay, so the safer family-friendly option,
can we auction off a double pass to an Auckland FC game, Nick?
I think you can.
I think you can do a couple for such a fantastic cause.
That's a great idea.
And we'd love to push out what you're doing too.
So we'll share it across our channels as well
because I think it's such a fantastic cause
that you're raising money for.
Oh, that's amazing.
In fact, anyone who's going to donate in the next couple of minutes,
if you donate more than $20,
give us a text to 4487.
Tell us you've donated and you want those tickets
and we might send them your way to see the Auckland FC.
John O'Ben and Megan, the podcast.
The Hats.
That's why we're doing it here today.
And Dame Julie Chapman joins us right now.
You started, Kidscan.
You were telling us in your garage.
Yes.
Over 20 years ago in the garage in Greenhouse.
wanted to make sure that kids had what they need to get to school so education
equals opportunity how did you even start like you say in your garage but like how do
you even bring that to fruition I think you know I look back now and I think actually
I can't really remember but it was you know working with a whole lot of low
desal schools finding out what they needed I had this real sense of I've got a sense
of fairness and I felt that it was really unfair that kids just didn't have the things they needed,
like the clothing, the shoes, the food, to just go to school like any other kid. So literally
just got started, started talking to sponsors, partners, anyone that would listen. And we started
off with shoes, food and, you know, fast forward to now. And we're in almost over 1,400 schools
in early childhoods, which isn't something to celebrate, but I guess what I do love is that
we can support them, and that's part of why we're all here today to raise money, to get as
much of that stuff to 10,000 children.
Yeah, it's incredible what you do, but you're right.
We would love nothing more than kids can to not exist in many ways, you know, and have
these kids to go to school with just the basics that you talk about.
What's the difference you've made to kids' lives for kids can now?
Where do you see that?
One of the things that schools tell us in early childhoods is when we put food in, behaviour
is better, learning is better, there's less fighting, there's less, I guess, kids being
upset because they're hungry, there's less shame, shoes help kids to participate, otherwise
in activities they might otherwise get left out of.
So it's actually just giving kids dignity and just allowing them to just get on with being kids
kids shouldn't have to worry about where their next meal is coming from
or how they're going to get a decent pair of shoes
or whether they're going to be warm.
That's one of the saddest things for me is the dignity aspect
because a lot of them are feeling shame
so much so that they pick up empty wrappers of food
so it looks like they've eaten before they even get to school.
Kids shouldn't have to carry the burden of that
cost of living crisis we're all going through.
Yeah, and that's something we're hearing more of
with kids pretending that they've had something to eat
by picking up empty packets.
I also think it's really important that people know
that parents are doing the best that they can.
I haven't met a parent in the 20 years
that doesn't want better for their kids,
and so it's really important that we don't judge
and no matter what family you're born into,
it's a lottery, so it's all of us getting behind kids
to make sure they can get an education.
It's a very fair point.
I know my family are hugely embarrassed
to be associated with me.
I mean, I would be.
So you can donate now, Kids to Nine-N-R-3, automatic $3 donation.
Thanks to cookie time, it's the power hour.
They're doubling every dollar donated.
And if you have donated, we'd love to talk to you, too.
0-800, the hits.
Yeah, but right now you can text Kids to 933.
Just an instant $3 donation.
As simple as that, we're not going to sign you up for months and months of payments,
but you can make another payment if you want.
A little bit more at KidsCampbell.org.
Back next, we thought, because we're at Eden Park,
we need to get a bit of commentary going on.
We're live at Eden Park playing 24 hours a handball.
Ben's just trying to give our Olympic weightlifters some tips on how to squat.
I was like, you just squat a bit lower, man.
I was showing him good form too.
And he was quite impressed with my form because you didn't quite get down to that one.
Now I'm out of the game.
That's justice.
There we go.
That's justice.
Yeah, we are here doing 24 hours of handball for kids can.
It's the power hour thanks to cookie time.
So every dollar donated cookie time will add a dollar to it.
Over a hundred thousand dollars so far.
Geez, I tell you what, if we get to a million by 5 p.m. tonight, that'll be ideal.
It'll be a classic 9 to 5 workday.
$108,000 just over that.
So thank you so much to everyone that's donated.
We're a long way off a million, but if we can keep going right now, it'd be great.
We've got someone on the line who is about to donate quite a lot.
John Wong.
Johnny, how are you, mate?
Yes, I'm good.
How are you?
We're doing really well.
Listen, your generosity is incredible.
How much are you dumping, John?
I'm donating $4,000 today.
That's incredible
Now is this from you from a business
And if it's not from the business
You can claim it yourself
Oh it's from my business
You know structures for good
We're structural engineers
Oh John
That's amazing
Structures for good
It's our J square
Oh it is
You're our J square John
Yeah we've got a sponsored square
On each one of our four square
squares
A mansplained that one
This morning
So there we go
John's like yeah I know man I sponsored it
Well thanks so much John
That is incredible
Incredible. $4,000. Thank you.
That's great. Awesome.
You look after yourself, Johnny.
Now, we have a commentator.
Ben demanded a commentator.
He's like, we're doing this morning of Eden Park.
We need a commentator.
That's what you want it.
A commentator.
A commentator.
The best commentator.
Where's the love?
You know, it goes Stephen McIver.
Morning.
Then it goes Nisbet.
Let's rank them all.
Let's rank them all.
Let's not get into a ragging.
Stephen's like, please don't do that.
McHate.
Thank you, Ben.
now Stephen McIver
but we must say last year you
were probably the standout
guest played for
I'd say 12 hours in total
you did
oh come on
you played for all day
and you went home and you went home
for dinner then you came back
you came back
but you did say you
had a bit of an injury afterwards
mate I'll tell you
well I didn't stretch last time
I couldn't walk the next day
still that bending over
my
what are these past
there are your hamstrings
Steve
they got your hamstring they didn't know
what they were
Yeah, I played handball last year.
Yeah, I found out about those.
I was absolutely wrecked.
It was a lot of fun, right?
And this venue this year, I reckon this is a bit more of a challenge.
Yeah.
Outside, one o'clock in the morning, and it rains.
I mean, don't jinx it.
Now, Steve, you've obviously been doing some fantastic commentary for a number of years.
He's probably commentated almost every sport that is playable, have you?
Yes, yeah.
Have you ever commented handball?
No, and haven't they never done rugby?
That would never let me near that, which is okay, by.
is a different one but we've got in here so we've got Ben sitting in the
Griffin Square the King David Litty one from here I tell you I've already I had a
little rap with him earlier just he's he's mean yeah David Litty he's very
competitive he's not nice he's an Olympic weightlifter he's got to be competitive
and then you've got how to Jordan who's basically telling people how to play how to
he tells you how to play at a great rate of knots he's like the expert in handball
and I don't know how he does it in the jandals he's jandals for 24 hours too which
is a great commitment yeah well it
He must have very strong calves.
Can we get, yeah, not hamstrings.
Oh, can we get a close-up on his calves?
Can we please get Megan in there too?
Can you commentate Megan's technique as well?
Actually, you know, this is first time I met me?
She's tiny, tiny.
Come join us.
She's fine, you mean.
Because she's photos, she's quite tall.
Yeah.
No, it's because I got sneakers on.
I wear big shoes.
So here we go.
Let's have a look at Megan.
No, nice stuff.
She hasn't played handpool before.
No, she's taking it easy.
Lizzie, through the legs.
Nicely, gets it back.
No.
Cross over the back legs, not cool.
No pain showing.
Cookie time in, two cookie times.
Steve McCoyne, commentating.
Let's see,
Palm Ford.
Oh, I'm going to say how to,
out, out.
Oh, he's called it.
Stephen McIver commentating.
Hey, hey, hey, don't get my face.
There's a bit of an argument going on.
Hey, it's all for charity, guys.
It's all for charity.
Lissy's competitive.
For the kids, it's for the kids.
We'll be back very shortly.
