Jono, Ben & Megan - The Podcast - FULL: Stacking Cans To Win Ca$$$$$H!

Episode Date: February 3, 2022

Today we were out at a Resene store doing our Resene Can Can Challenge. We stacked a bunch of Resene paint cans on top of each other, with each can representing $250, and gave away the total amount of... money before the paint cans toppled over. Lucky Emily ended up winning $6,250! What a wonderful moment! Ben also reckons he's been outsmarted by his kid, and Jono reckons he knows a subtle way to make everyone in your office listen to you. Starting point is 00:00:00 Birds with the Jono and Ben podcast. Hi, Jono, Ben, podcast. Welcome along to the podcast. You know, I want to start the podcast with a little something there. A little message I received on something we did on the radio. Now, the other day you, this week you did a poem for Auckland. Like a lovely poem. I thought it was a pretty heartfelt poem.
Starting point is 00:00:20 Well, it wasn't. You just basically made jokes at Auckland's expense. The city that you love and at the end you're like, you're really great, Auckland. That was the gist of it. Yeah, it was like your gangs with their guns and apartment city slums. It was Gary McCormick-esque. I know that's his territory, that's his game. I'll do it once, and that's it.
Starting point is 00:00:37 Now I'm out. You dip your toes into it. But anyway, we put a little video up on our social media of that, and I was in it. How long was I in it for? Because it was your poem, probably four seconds across the poem. You actually actively tried to distance yourself from the get-go. I mean, I wrote it, and I sent it to you on the weekend,
Starting point is 00:00:55 and you're like, oh, this is great. It can be Bill's and Jono's poem, not Jono and Ben's. I just kind of went, ugh, and laughed my way through it. A conscious effort to make yourself. Come on, you can't make a joke about the warrior. Oh,
Starting point is 00:01:08 that was me. But anyway, we put it online and Aunty Sally, my Aunty Sally that lives in Toronto got in touch and not,
Starting point is 00:01:14 you know, obviously she doesn't understand any of the Auckland jokes so she wasn't upset at any of those but she was upset at me
Starting point is 00:01:21 for the t-shirt I was wearing. She's like, you're wearing a New York Giants T-shirt. And she got in touch with me. She's like, what size T-shirt are you? That's the message I get from Sally.
Starting point is 00:01:33 And I'm like, medium, large is good. I'm buying you a T-shirt, new T-shirt. I don't want to see you ever wearing a New York Giants T-shirt again. That was her major issue. She's like, I'm getting into Toronto. She lives in Toronto. Toronto Raptors t-shirt. And I'm like, oh, OK.
Starting point is 00:01:49 And I guess I did, you know, normally when I wear a t-shirt for a sports team, I normally like the Lakers. But this one I did see, and I fell into that trap of going, oh, that's a cool-looking t-shirt. Not really a huge New York Giants fan. You're not a big American football fan. No. Like, I could probably name you one player who played for them
Starting point is 00:02:03 and doesn't play for them anymore. Odell. Odell Beckham Jr. He used to play for them but doesn't anymore. I fell into that trap of oh that's a cool t-shirt I bought up but she wasn't happy
Starting point is 00:02:11 and so now she's like But she's wanting to replace your American football t-shirt with a Toronto basketball t-shirt. Yes, yeah. But you're like
Starting point is 00:02:19 I'm a football guy. Well no, to be honest I'm more into the basketball so I'm just like the design. Yeah, yeah. So that was her big bugbear, which I thought was quite amusing with your pom.
Starting point is 00:02:29 So she wasn't offended in anything. It was about a 90 second onslaught over the city of Auckland, but the 4 second of Ben Boyce in a New York Giants t-shirt. She's like, yeah don't wear that again. So apparently It's a really funny thing the quirks that annoy people about.
Starting point is 00:02:48 You know, when you watch someone, you're like, oh, jeez, I hate it when they do. I'm sure there's many for us. Yeah. You know, my mum always has a go at some broadcaster who keeps just going, no, tell us more. That's their interview tactic. I like that, though. Yeah, tell us more is great because you don't actually have to have any questions. Yeah. Good morning, how are you? I'm good, tell us more. Now that's the interview tactic. I like that though. Yeah, tell us more is great
Starting point is 00:03:05 because you don't actually have to have any questions. Good morning, how are you? I'm good, tell us more. Oh yeah, I've had a good day. Tell us more, it's good. Because it puts the ball back in the interviewees, the interview subjects court, where you're like, I am very ill prepared for this,
Starting point is 00:03:19 but I'm just going to keep going, tell us more, tell us more. You're like, I've told you everything. Tell us more. So we're opening MIQ in October, tell us more, tell us more. You're like, I've told you everything. Tell us more. So we're opening MIQ in October. Tell us more. It's a five-step program. We've got to give it. Tell us more.
Starting point is 00:03:31 Well, we're... Makes you kind of question your thing. You're like, ooh, they've really put me on the spot here. Yeah, like I haven't told them enough. Yeah, so that's what we're going to do more. Tell us more. Really, really fun show today. We're at Resene. We were at Razine. We were balancing paint cans to try and win some money.
Starting point is 00:03:49 But the jeopardy, the big thing was if they toppled over, no money. So we had to really gauge it with your help, how high it went. And geez, it got high. It got really high. Yeah, people were wanting us to pull out at the $3,000 mark. We went well above it. And it was reckless. It really was of us looking back on it.
Starting point is 00:04:06 You know, it's like one of those things you do the night before and you're like, hmm, we shouldn't have done that. Shouldn't have done that. Shouldn't have done that. Glad we dodged a bullet there. Yeah. And we missed a trick too, not having the can-can music. Oh, can-can music.
Starting point is 00:04:16 Can-can. Oh, you're right. We'd have to go back and do that again. Well, maybe we will. Maybe we will. Well, tell us more then. Tell us more. Well, I'll kind of talk to them about scheduling it maybe at another time.
Starting point is 00:04:28 Okay, tell us more. Okay. Well, I'd be very interested to go back and do it again. I thought it went well. Okay, you've told us enough now. Thank you for coming in. The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast. Thank you, Justin.
Starting point is 00:04:44 It is The Hits, Jono and Ben, 6.09. We're coming to you this morning from a car park. We're sitting outside. It's still dark. You think we're joking. It's pitch black, Ben Boyce. We're not joking. We're in a Resene car park next to a timber yard and a power pole making a very unsettling,
Starting point is 00:04:59 crackling noise. Like, you can almost hear the cancer coming off the power pole, can't you? But we're here this morning. It is a very exciting morning here on the Hats because thanks to Rosene, we've been set a bit of a challenge with Rosene paint cans. We're going to see how many we can stack. Each can is worth $250. You guys can help us to see when we should stop or not because if the cans tumble over, we don't give away any of the money. So we've got to kind of get to a point and decide that's enough. And it is windy.
Starting point is 00:05:28 It is windy today. We haven't factored in the wind conditions. It's windier than being after a tikka masala. So we're trying to work out if we can actually go somewhere a little bit more sheltered than the middle of the car park. But from 7 o'clock this morning, make sure you tune in because as soon as we get to a point with the cans that hopefully
Starting point is 00:05:46 they don't topple over we'll give away potentially thousands of dollars to the first caller on 0800 The Hits that's right so there's no limit to the budget
Starting point is 00:05:54 Razine have said keep going you can keep going up until the you can make it higher than the Sky Tower they've got a scissor lift there for us
Starting point is 00:06:01 they're like use that so they're expecting it to go very high they've got a lot of money that we could give away. So thanks so much, Zine, for having us in this wonderful car park this morning. But in all seriousness,
Starting point is 00:06:14 thank you so much for this amazing prize that we have to give away this morning. Maybe they've invested it all in the prize and not the broadcast location. Yeah. Look, I'm worried that eventually someone will back a truck and they won't see us here at the broadcast location. Yeah. Look, I'm worried that eventually someone will back a truck and they won't see us here at the car park. But at the moment, you know, it's a little bit quiet.
Starting point is 00:06:32 The store doesn't open until 7 o'clock this morning. I always feel so sorry when we come to these shops and we do the show. I feel sorry for the proprietors of the shop who have to get up early, open up the shop for us, and then sort of we inconvenience their morning for about three hours when they're like, mate, we just need to get up early, open up the shop for us, and then sort of we inconvenience their morning for about three hours when they're like, mate, we just need to get the day started. It's a Friday. We all want to knock off the Savo.
Starting point is 00:06:52 You're putting us three hours behind. But yeah, the Rosine have a huge range of paints ideal for decorating everything from roofs and decks to ceilings and floors and everything in between, inside and out. So from 7 o'clock this morning, we'll be stacking paint cans and hopefully winning someone thousands of thousands of dollars heading into the long weekend. She said, win some to pick up now. I'm worried about stacking these cans.
Starting point is 00:07:13 Hey, next on the show, big news yesterday. Kiwis can come home. Yes, that's right. It's all open. Come home. Come home from October. Don't come home yet. But except if you're an Aussie, you can come.
Starting point is 00:07:23 It's confusing. We'll explain it all next. Jono and Ben. Coming to you from a car park at Razine where we can potentially win you thousands of thousands of dollars after seven. Do you know what has been probably the most joyous thing of this morning, Ben Boyce, is watching producer Bea Humphrey, Bea Humps, set up the broadcast equipment. I mean, we just got it sorted before six o'clock. There was a lot of stress going on.
Starting point is 00:07:45 It's one of those occasions where you don't want to say anything because you don't want to add to the stress. And he was sort of wandering around muttering to himself, cable, XRL, cable, microphone, microphone. And then he phones the tech, the lovely tech Ashwin. Hey Ashwin, how you going? I don't even know why he asked how Ashwin was going.
Starting point is 00:08:02 No, because he gave Ashwin no time. We didn't hear what he said, but he gave him no time to respond. He just barreled straight into, the microphones aren't working. Hey, Ashwin, how you going? I don't give a crap. Okay, so these cables. Let's look at some of the big news happening in New Zealand and around the world. We proudly present the only news update coming to you live from a paint shop car park.
Starting point is 00:08:23 And that is a guarantee. Your move, Mike McRoberts. I want to see you at a Resene this afternoon. This is grassroots news, baby. Now, the big news yesterday, we all would have heard New Zealand's international borders will be reopening in five stages. It starts from February 28th, firstly to the Aussies, the Kiwis and Aussie, and then basically at the five-step program throughout the year.
Starting point is 00:08:42 So the rest of the world by October, MIQ removed for most travellers, replaced by self-isolation. So now we put the whole thing, it's back in our hands. It's a trust, it's a game of trust. And I know what we've learned through the last two years is you can trust people. You can. Can't you, Juliet?
Starting point is 00:08:59 Oh, some people. Yeah. People are trustworthy. But what else could we do? You know, what else could the government do? They're like, you wanted this? All right, some people. Yeah. People are trustworthy. But what else could we do? What else could the government do? They're like, you wanted this? All right, all right. Over to you.
Starting point is 00:09:10 It's like when your parents sort of give you an ultimatum and you're like, they know you're going to screw it up. They're just waiting for that moment. Yeah, but a lot of very, very happy Kiwis. It was really awesome on the news last night. So a lot of emotional Kiwis saying how they're going to reconnect with family. Haven't seen family in a couple of years. And some of the things I thought was really cool,
Starting point is 00:09:27 some of the things people had missed about New Zealand, there was a lady who wanted to go to places like Burger Fuel. Burger Fuel with, like, some good George, Doris Plum Cider. There you go, good plug for Burger Fuel and good George there on the news. So that's something that's being missed. And then the next cab off the rank.
Starting point is 00:09:45 I just want to get home, see the sheep. Oh, Jesus. I do love it, though. But it does nothing for New Zealand on the world stage and that whole rumour about us and sheep. It does nothing for that. I do know when I'm abroad, I miss the sheep more than I do my family. That's what I've always said. But, you know the sheep more than I do my family being divorced.
Starting point is 00:10:06 That's what I've always said. But, you know, no mention of family in either of those grabs. No. The first lady was missing hamburgers more than she was her parents. There were some other people talking about family. We've just picked out the comedy ones. You were saying yesterday 8,000 flights were booked. Yeah, instantly.
Starting point is 00:10:23 Yeah, as soon as the announcement was made, which is great. You know, it's good. It feels like a step towards normality. And we were talking to Craig Bruce, a very respected radio consultant in Australia yesterday, Ben. You weren't able to attend the meeting. You had a previous appointment booked. But he's in Adelaide, and he said he's been surrounded by people with Omicron. He hasn't contracted it yet.
Starting point is 00:10:46 But he said for the most part, it's just like a light cold. His friend had a headache and just thought he was a bit tired. But then it's not the same for everyone. There's some elderly people. Mate, I'm talking it down. There's some elderly people in the population. I just don't think you're, what are you, Donald Trump? Everything's fine. Free Brian Tarmac.
Starting point is 00:11:00 Oh, jeez. Oh, he's free already. And that is, I'm going to wrap up. Lock him up and free him again. I'm going to wrap John up there. The board is opening a five-step plan. That is good news. Good, exciting news for New Zealand heading into a long weekend.
Starting point is 00:11:13 Hey, next on the show, this is an amazing place that, you know, we're trying to do good deeds this month. Yeah, we're doing 28 good deeds over the 28 days of February. And someone got in touch with us and mentioned a lady who's left her full-time job of 20 years to do something remarkable, and we're going to get her on the radio next. It is the hits. You've got Jono and Ben. The hits. You're on the hits, Jono and Ben.
Starting point is 00:11:35 Friday morning, heading into a long weekend. We're on a mission this month to do 28 good deeds in 28 days. That's right. Yesterday, we washed some windows on a high-rise building in town, abseiled down, and I want to take this time to send a massive shout-out to Spider-Man. Spider-Man has been slinging off those high-rises
Starting point is 00:11:54 for years. That's terrifying. Listen, he makes it look pretty chill as well. And the only thing I would say after being a high-rise window cleaner, Ben Boyce, is those webs would leave nasty smudge marks over all those buildings. Yeah. Someone's got to clean up like us.
Starting point is 00:12:10 We were yesterday. But we've tracked down some people doing some amazing things. We want to showcase them doing some good deeds for New Zealand. It's not just us. We can't take all the glory. Well, no, these are people that have been doing it for a lot longer than us, four days into it. On the phone right now is
Starting point is 00:12:25 Sarah Page, and she's from the Kindness Collective. Sarah, good morning. Hello. Kia ora. How are you guys? Kia ora. We're doing well. We're doing well. I can feel the kindness coming from you. Do you know what we're doing, Sarah? I've heard a little bit about it, but tell me some more. Oh, you've heard about us in the kindness
Starting point is 00:12:41 community, have you? Oh, well, about some good deeds you're doing. Yeah, words travelling. Okay, it've heard about us in the kindness community, have you? Oh, well, about some good deeds you're doing. Yeah, words traveling. Okay, it's getting out there amongst the charitable people of Aotearoa. We're doing 28 deeds in 28 days. We haven't decided if they're all good or we'll chuck a couple of bad ones in there. No, we're trying to do good deeds, trying to help some people out. But you've been doing this for a while.
Starting point is 00:13:00 Yeah, a few years now. So what is the kindness collective? And, you know, you've been doing it a few years now. So what is the Kindness Collective? And you've been doing it a few years now. Do you want to tell us to stay in our lane? No! More people in all the lanes, the better I reckon. Fill up that motorway of kindness. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:13:16 So we are a big group of people and businesses that work together to provide time, tools, resources and money to Kiwis in need. So we connect children and families with the things that they need in life, like the everyday essentials, to the all-important moments of joy. Like last Christmas, we just provided everything that you'd need for Christmas for about, I think it was just over 5,500 families.
Starting point is 00:13:43 5,500? Wow. Yeah, and we did 23,000 toys through the Christmas Joy Store that we opened, which was essentially just like a free toy store that ran all throughout December. Why did I not know about this when I was doing my Christmas shopping? Well, I don't know. So over a million dollars worth of kindness has been invested into community donations through the Kindness Collective, I was just reading as well.
Starting point is 00:14:07 Yeah, yeah, I think we're up to about 1.3 now. But that's everything. And that's just all the different projects that we do throughout the year. We do some really big projects. Like, for example, we're about to start building a community garden at a local school. And then we're about to start our PJ project which is getting over 5,000 pairs of warm winter PJs for kids all across the country
Starting point is 00:14:30 What a great thing to do Now what were you doing before you were kind? Before I was kind I'm sure you've always been kind What horrible things have you done in the past that's led you down this path? How did you get into it? How did this all come about? There's actually probably a few horrible things I've always did you get into it? How did this all come about? There's actually quite probably a few horrible things.
Starting point is 00:14:46 I've always wanted to get into politics, but I've always said, oh, I probably can't because I was a bit of a menace when I was in my early 20s. No, so I've been in marketing and events for a really long time and then was working essentially two jobs for the last three years and went, nah, I'm going to do this full time. So I left my career of 20 years last year and now I just spread the goodness.
Starting point is 00:15:09 What a great thing to do. You always want to have purpose in life with what you do. I don't know what purpose we have here, Ben, boys, but... We try and do that, all cringe, but yeah, but it is. But what you do is amazing to hear. It must bring you a lot of joy, what you're doing. Yeah, it it is. But what you do is amazing to hear. It must bring you a lot of joy, what you're doing. Yeah, it really does. And I think, you know, you're really lucky if you can find something that brings you joy in life
Starting point is 00:15:30 and you get to do it every day. And not many people have that. And I'm incredibly grateful that I get to do this every day. And especially after the last couple of years, it's been pretty tough for a lot of people. And I'm over it. I'm over COVID covid i don't know that you guys yeah covid's not over us unfortunately that's the thing is it wants to stick around i'm having a lot of fun here how do people listening right now uh if anyone wants to help whether
Starting point is 00:15:57 they're a business or an individual is any ways that people can donate items or money or things like that so if you head to our website which is simple, it's just kindness.co.nz we have all the different things that we do and the ways that people can get involved, but we have so many different projects coming up over the next 12 months that people can donate time and money and resource to
Starting point is 00:16:18 and there's always things that we list on our Facebook and Instagram pages as well of what we get up to. What a wonderful initiative. Congratulations. Really do appreciate your time, Sarah. And well done on all the good you're doing. Thank you. And I look forward to seeing what you guys do over February
Starting point is 00:16:34 as well. And we will tell you what we did for today's deed after 7 o'clock. I got quite emotional. There were tears. I teared up. It was very, very cool. Right now though, it's AJR. It is The Hits. You've got Jono and Ben. Here we go.
Starting point is 00:16:49 It is The Hits. Jono and Ben, on your Friday morning. We're coming to you live from Resene. We're in the car park right here. Without a word of a lie, we are in the car park. It is hard to say that without having a laugh in your voice, isn't it? But it's a very exciting morning. We've got thousands and thousands of dollars we could potentially win for you after 7 o'clock.
Starting point is 00:17:05 That's right. Now, Ben Boyce, I don't know if you've noticed, there is an individual around work who shall remain nameless. Is that because you don't know their name? Classic. Like, I'll name them. I can't, so they shall remain nameless. Fair enough, I like that. I'm saying it's for shall remain nameless. Fair enough. I like that.
Starting point is 00:17:27 I'm saying it's for privacy reasons, but you're right. Be someone that you go up and you call buddy or mate or legend or something, as John would. Yeah, nail on the head there. But they whisper. She whispers like a mouse. Do you know what I'm talking about? Yeah, I know. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:44 And yesterday I said, you're very quiet. Or are we? We're just probably obnoxiously loud. Yeah, because you do notice that when you get home from doing a radio show, you feel like you're about four or five levels above the rest of the household. Hey, guys, how you going? And they're like, oh, tone it down, mate. Just, mate, chill. And it's because you've been wearing headphones and fake laughing for three hours.
Starting point is 00:18:02 It really gets the vocal levels up there. And she said, I actually do this. She talks quietly around the office and in meetings. So people listen to her. Because you actually have to really concentrate and listen to her whisper. You kind of lean in, don't you? I thought she was raised by a family of adorable mice. Just quiet whispering mice.
Starting point is 00:18:24 But that is a great power play in the office. It is, actually. Talk quietly. Maybe we should do that on our radio show. Maybe we'd have more luck if people were like, hey, welcome along to the hits. The guys, what are they saying? It does make you kind of lean in.
Starting point is 00:18:36 Well, you have to. Yeah. Yeah. Isn't it? Because otherwise a lot of people stick at the same level. We all talk over each other and don't really listen. And it gets louder and louder and louder. So I had a look,
Starting point is 00:18:45 a list, a look through the list of some of the most wonderful power plays in humanity. Yeah. And someone who pulls
Starting point is 00:18:55 into your driveway for the first time they come over to your house and they just park into your driveway. I do that as well. You're like, wow, okay.
Starting point is 00:19:04 You're a driveway parker. A driveway parker, yeah. You're not, you park. No, that's something you can park in the driveway. It's something you wait for someone to say that. But yeah, that's a power play, yeah. Yeah, another great power play. And it's a power play we've suffered from the media, from print media,
Starting point is 00:19:17 is when they put quotation marks around your profession. Comedians. Jono and Ben, comedians in quotation marks. Broadcasters. You know what we're talking about, Juliet. Yeah. That's a great power play. Really puts you in your position.
Starting point is 00:19:34 Starting early on the hip-hip-a-ray of the happy birthday. That's a good power play. Yeah, but then what happens is sometimes that power play gets out-power played with another individual who kicks off the, for she's a jolly good fellow, which is a wonderful one. Someone who says, my office door is always open, but the office door is always closed 100% of the time. Well, yeah, because technically the office door is not always open. Yeah, they're appearing friendly and welcoming, but they're appearing powerful and scary at the same time. Well, yeah, because technically the officer was not always open. Yeah. They're appearing friendly and welcoming,
Starting point is 00:20:05 but they're appearing powerful and scary at the same time. I hear you. When you're on the phone to someone, and this happened to me a few weeks ago,
Starting point is 00:20:14 where you're giving your details and they say, whoa, whoa, whoa, buddy, slow down. I'm making you appear to the masses frantic and frazzled and rattled.
Starting point is 00:20:27 Yeah. Whoa, whoa, whoa, buddy. Slow down. There's a wonderful power play. It is. It is. You're right. And one that I like to do, Ben, you don't like to engage in this so much, but you're sort of collateral.
Starting point is 00:20:38 When you cross the road and the green man hasn't even signalled. And he signals halfway through your crossing, letting the whole intersection know you know the phasing of this piece of... Yeah, but if you get that wrong... If you get it wrong, it's bad. You're stuck in between two lanes of heaving traffic on either side of you, and that's a lonely place. They are some great power plays. Some of them I would not recommend trying today,
Starting point is 00:21:02 but something I would recommend, sticking around after 7 o'clock this morning. We're at Resene, and we could win you thousands of thousands of dollars as we start stacking paint cans. We'll tell you how after 7. Make sure you're listening. Jono's Internet Wormhole. That is the Internet Wormhole.
Starting point is 00:21:18 We'll get to it very shortly. I know, Juliet, we don't usually do this on air, but you were concerned about microphone levels. How's it been compared to mine? How's it going? You seem a little bit quieter now, John. That's good. I think it's for the best.
Starting point is 00:21:30 How have I turned myself up now? How's that? Yes, that's brilliant. We are broadcasting this morning from Resene. After 7 o'clock this morning, we're going to be stacking paint cans. And Juliet, you're back in the studio. We're on location. That's right.
Starting point is 00:21:41 And we're working through some technical difficulties. But I think we've got there. I reckon the journalist should do this on the news a bit more. Yeah. Do I need my mic a bit? No, that's coming through all right. You're coming through. This is warts and all stuff.
Starting point is 00:21:54 Yeah. It's the internet wormhole, and Justin Bieber actually wrote the song, Holy, Holy, Holy, about me getting lost in the internet wormhole. Someone call the Westpac helicopter, because he's trapped down another wormhole. And because of today's can stacking attempt, if you don't know what we're doing, we're stacking Resene paint cans as high as we can. Each can worth $250.
Starting point is 00:22:15 We could win you thousands of dollars. But the only thing is if they collapse, we win you nothing. Now, we managed to talk to people here at Resene because we were outside in the car park and we were like, it's a little bit windy. Too dusty. And they've kindly let us come inside into the storeroom. Now, we managed to talk to the people here at Resene because we were outside in the car park, and we were like, it's a little bit windy. Too gusty. And they've kindly let us come inside into the storeroom.
Starting point is 00:22:28 So the wind won't be a factor, which is quite good in winning you guys lots of money today. That's right. So I got into a bit of a research project yesterday about cans in general. Now, Ben, you're looking at me like going, dear God, are we going to talk about cans for two minutes? I might just clear some emails or something. Do you want to turn my microphone levels down, actually? Off. Completely off. Or do you want to off, actually? We're going, dear God, are we going to talk about cans for two minutes? I might just clear some emails or something. How am I? Do you want to turn my microphone levels down, actually? Off?
Starting point is 00:22:47 Completely off? Or do you want to off, actually? If these don't... Okay. If the first one doesn't well, yeah? That's it. That's it. Okay.
Starting point is 00:22:55 All right. Here's the first one. This is about cans. Cans in general. Cans in general. Now, believe it or not, they're not just used for drinking out of and Juliet and her mates smoking whatever they smoke out of. Excuse me? Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:23:09 The slander that they were. Now turn this mic off. Yeah, yeah, yeah. There we go. So did you know the strength of four six-packs of cans? So 24 aluminium cans. Do you know the strength of 24 aluminium cans can support a 4,000 pound car body? So a car can sit on 24 cans and they won't crush.
Starting point is 00:23:30 What, full cans of like, say, beer or whatever? Yeah. Really? All right, 24 cans. Now we're going. Are you okay? All right, continue with your cans. Okay.
Starting point is 00:23:40 Did you know in the USA, Ben Boyce, have you heard of the USA? I have, yes. They consume enough cans per year to go to the moon and back eight times. Eight times. So Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, they don't need to be building rockets. They build an aluminium can tower and just climb up like Jack and the Beanstalk. Is this cans, you know, like a can of spaghetti and things like that as well? Yeah, aluminium cans.
Starting point is 00:24:09 Yeah, right. Yeah, gotcha. Did you like that one? It was good. Yeah, I enjoyed that. You keep going. One more. Did you know the can, the aluminium can?
Starting point is 00:24:18 Probably not. I probably don't know, to be honest. I've known none of these facts. It's actually only 40 years old. It's as old as me and looks way better. Oh, so it's only been around for 40 years? Only been around for 40 years. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:33 And it was... Oh, you're losing it. Yeah, that one wasn't... Yeah, okay. That one is good, that one. Oh, yeah, right. And did you know, me boys, that there's 1.52 trillion cans consumed every year.
Starting point is 00:24:46 They get recycled, obviously, but globally, 1.52 trillion cans. That is crazy, and that could stretch to the moon more than 482 times. Wow. Did you know, did you used to do that back in the day? Did you used to collect cans? They used to have a place in Marduk. Yeah, they'd pay you like five cents for those. Oh, yeah, you'd collect.
Starting point is 00:25:04 You would come by with these big rubbish sacks full of cans. You're like, it's taking me weeks. They'd be like, that's $1.20 you get. You're like, what? I've been working. You're like, that's child labour right there. Why do we keep banging on about the people in the factories in China? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:17 What about the kids here in New Zealand? That's right. There we go, and that was the internet wormhole about cans. Next on the show, why one of the judges stormed off the masked singer. Well, two of the judges in the USA. It was high drama. We'll tell you what happened next. That is the hits.
Starting point is 00:25:33 Spy. The What's Up. Spy.co.nz. Hand you over to the umbrella, because she's about to throw some shade at the celebrities. Juliet, what's happening? So on last week's taping of The Masked Singer in the United States, Rudy Giuliani,
Starting point is 00:25:48 who is a former mayor of New York and lawyer for Donald Trump, was apparently revealed to be under one of the masks. Now, you probably remember him being in the news, I think, mainly last year. He was kind of a dodgy guy. He was under federal investigation for, and I don't know what this means,
Starting point is 00:26:03 but it sounds smart, for violating lobbying laws. And he was also in Borat 2, in that scene with Borat's daughter, and it was a bit sort of dodgy looking what he was doing. That's right. Do you remember that? Yeah, Sacha Baron Cohen, almost in trap, almost in trapment. Yeah. He had the other famous moment as well, where he was talking about Donald Trump as his lawyer.
Starting point is 00:26:23 I remember his hair dye was sort of running down his face. It was quite hot. The black hair dye. It was a streak of it. Very famous moment, yeah. So this unveiling on The Masked Singer caused a bit of outrage. And the judges, Ken Jeong and Robin Thicke, they stormed off stage in protest because they were so annoyed that he was kind of allowed to come on The Masked Singer
Starting point is 00:26:42 because of the sort of dodgy things he's done in the past. But one article I was reading says apparently Rudy Giuliani is A, against wearing masks, and B, can't even sing. So I'm unsure why he was on The Masked Singer. But the episode doesn't come out, I think, until next month. So we'll have to probably wait and see. I saw the final last night on three of this season. And who won that? Oh, Nick Lachey from the boy band.
Starting point is 00:27:10 It was a boy band. It was 98 Degrees or something, right? And there's some really good celebrities. Wiz Khalifa was third place. That's so cool. And it's like when they do their guesses, they're like, Oh, I reckon it could be Kelly Rowland under that mask. And you're like, well, I reckon it could be, you know, Kelly Rowland under that mask. And you're like, well, it very well could be.
Starting point is 00:27:27 However, they've got their hamstrung in New Zealand when they do it. Well, New Zealand now the borders are open. Maybe it could be Kelly Rowland. She'd have to isolate at home for 10 days. But that's her commitment to the mask thing in New Zealand. I reckon that could be Michelle Obama under that cicada mask. Oh, my goodness. That would be amazing.
Starting point is 00:27:45 The New Zealand one's masks were great. When they first said they were going to do the show, I'm like, dear God, they're going to have bloody balaclavas and a screen mask. But they actually, the costumes were incredible. It looked amazing. Yeah, it looked incredible. Yeah, it was a very good show, wasn't it? The format's genius because you hang around regardless if you think you know or not.
Starting point is 00:28:01 Yeah, to see if you're right. Yeah, totally. And that's your Spy Update for this morning. For more you can head to the hits.co.nz. Very shortly we start putting down paint cans here at Resene. We're trying to stack as many as possible. Every can's worth $250. When we decide we've had enough
Starting point is 00:28:15 with your help, we give away the money. All going well. If it doesn't topple over after seven, you could win big on the hits. Breakfast with Jono and Ben. This morning we're at razine razine paint cans and paints are all designed and made in new zealand with expert advice you need from your razine color shop and we're about to hopefully win some people some money that's right so they've issued us a challenge to stack cans as high as we can each can worth 250 dollars however
Starting point is 00:28:43 if it topples over if it all comes crashing down like Juliet the next day after a festival then there is no money, no money for anyone now for months, I think it's about six months would you say Juliet Ben has been going around the office telling people to get their cans out
Starting point is 00:28:59 Jesus, you've really besmirched the good name of Juliet and myself in the last 30 seconds. But you played the long game, and it was all for this promotion. We now know what you're talking about. Get your cans out, and we have,
Starting point is 00:29:13 and that's what's happening today. So we need your help this morning on 0800THETS to tell us when we should stop, and we've decided this morning that everyone that texts RIZINE to 4487, to text the word RIZINE to 4487, to text the word Resene to 4487, will go in the draw for the money when hopefully we decide to stop with your help and we say we have this amount of money to give away.
Starting point is 00:29:32 Now, Mr. Head of Construction over here, Ben Boyce, has decided that we form a base of four cans. Yes. Now, that's an easy win off the bat. There's $500. So let's start doing that right now because that's not going to be that exciting radio. So I've got a Resene Daredevil can.
Starting point is 00:29:46 Okay, we've got the Resene Happy Paint. We'll put it here. Okay, that's one. So we can do a base of four. Resene I Dare You and we're getting
Starting point is 00:29:53 these paint colours beautifully, seamlessly integrated into the So we've got three along the bottom right now here at Resene and we've just put another one down.
Starting point is 00:30:01 We haven't even started stacking them up and already that's $1,000 we've got to give away. I know you say let's paint the town red. I say let's paint it Rasine Puhutukawa. Oh, lovely.
Starting point is 00:30:09 Okay, so there's four cans down. Okay. Now that's easy. That's four. So I reckon right now we can probably go three on top of that, right? Like a pyramid, because we're allowed. Go on. So we've got $500 at the moment.
Starting point is 00:30:23 No, that's $1,000. Oh, that's $1,000? Yeah. $1,000 already? Each one's $250. I don't know how you'll mass that. What school did you go to? Jeez.
Starting point is 00:30:30 Okay. So there's another $250. Now we've got $1,500. Just like that. So we're going to throw it over to you now, because we don't want to shoulder all of the responsibility for this. $0.800 the hits. $4,487.
Starting point is 00:30:43 Do we continue on? It's safe now? We've got a safe amount of cash? Ben Boyce is still loading cans on. Well, there's $2,000 right now, and we've only it's not going to topple over. We've got to keep going. I mean, $2,000 is a lot of money. This is a rock-solid foundation we've built here.
Starting point is 00:30:59 But, you know, that's... He wants to get higher than the sky today. Yeah. Alright, 0800 the hits. We've got $2,000 just sitting there in in front of us We could give that away very shortly to anyone that texts Resene to 4487 Or we could keep going and try and win some more money 0800 the hits give us a call next You decide how far we go I think we keep going
Starting point is 00:31:19 Look at it It's not going to move It's not like you to keep pushing things through Well yeah for a little bit But am I right? It's all up to you. It's not like you to keep pushing things through. Well, yeah, for a little bit. But am I right? It's all up to you. 0800 The Hits.
Starting point is 00:31:29 The Hits. You're on The Hits. Jono and Ben, we're in the Resine. It's a Resine store this morning. We're stacking paint cans. Every can that we stack is worth $250. And then we'll give that money away. Well, unless it all topples down.
Starting point is 00:31:45 Yes, that's right. There is more tension in this warehouse this morning than a divorced couple forced to reunite at a family gathering. So far, how much money have we got on the tally? Well, they allowed us, the CompuRazine allowed us to put together some sort of pyramid-type base. So we're allowed to put four along the bottom. So that was already $1,000. Pretty stable.
Starting point is 00:32:09 Now we've put another few cans on top. We're already at $2,000. So we've gone four cans, then three cans. We definitely can put another two and one, surely, on top without anything toppling over. Now, to distance ourselves from disappointment, we're involving you. It's a radio play. You become part of the team. You become the decision maker maker and we're going to go to you on 0800 The Hits. Do we keep stacking cans? Debbie, you're on New Zealand's Breakfast. Morena. Good morning. How are
Starting point is 00:32:34 you, Debs? Good. How are you guys? Living a lifelong dream of broadcasting out of a paint warehouse. That's how we are, Debbie. And I don't want any follow-up questions. Excellent. You keep going, guys. You can do it. So keep going.
Starting point is 00:32:46 So another one, I've got a Resine Eye Candy. That's a great name for a paint, but I'm going to put that on. So I put that on next to the other one. Yeah. There we go. So that's another $250, Debs. We're at $2,250, and things are pretty stable. Four cans, three on top, and then another two on top.
Starting point is 00:33:02 Things are looking good at $2,250. Now, Daryl, welcome. Are we playing it safe, Daryl? Are we pulling out now and giving away the cash? It's a lot of money. No, I need rhino surgery. Can you put some more cans on? Okay, put some more.
Starting point is 00:33:20 You need what surgery? Rhinoplasty? Yeah, I've got a four-inch nose. I come around the house before I even get there. Okay. Daryl needs his money for his nose operation. Well, we've got Rosine Red Hot. I'm going to put that on top right now.
Starting point is 00:33:37 There we go, and that's for Daryl's plastic surgery. Okay, so we've got a good little base so far. Now we can only go one on one of the other. You can check it out on the Hits Breakfast on social media. It's kind of like the top of the Empire State Building now. Yeah. You know how it sort of goes up in a triangle? Now we're one on top of another.
Starting point is 00:33:54 And the thing is, too, that we need to factor in New Zealand, and at the risk of sounding like Austin Powers from 1990s, it's not groovy, baby. It's not groovy, baby. There are no grooves in the cans that slot into the top of the can. It's just flat can on top of flat can. So factor that in. We've got money
Starting point is 00:34:12 hopefully to give away very shortly. Stick with us. We'll decide together, New Zealand, where we stop stacking cans. It is the hits. You've got Jono and Ben. Jono and Ben. Breakfast on the hits. Jono and Ben, we're doing 28 good deeds in 28 days throughout the month of February.
Starting point is 00:34:28 Jacinda Ardern's also doing it as well. Her good deed is opening up the borders to New Zealanders. Oh, she can have one on the belt there. Well done. But so far this week, we've had a week of mowing things, washing things, and what I have figured out is that being a good person takes up a lot of extracurricular time, Ben. Time that I don't know if I can be bothered giving. But anyway, we're here. It being a good person takes up a lot of extracurricular time ben time that i don't
Starting point is 00:34:46 know if i can be bothered given but anyway we're here it's a good feeling i mean what we're about to play right now wasn't it you were a skeptical you were you know you've been a bit skeptical about this whole thing well because you've come back you look we've got to be better people we're gonna well you see we've got to look like better people is what you said when you came back from holiday and i was like what dark stuff did you get up to in January, mate? But anyway, if you need us to babysit, house-sit, bull-sit, we'll do anything. If you've got a herd of cattle that need to be looked after, we can do that.
Starting point is 00:35:12 You can just text 4487. But yeah, yesterday after the show, we got in touch with this wonderful lady. Hello, Rowan speaking. Rowan? Yes? It's Benjamin and Jonathan from the Hits radio station. Hello, Rowan speaking Rowan Yes It's Benjamin and Jonathan from the Hits radio station Hello
Starting point is 00:35:30 How are you, Rowan? I'm good, thank you Have we caught you at a good time, bad time? Yeah, I'll just go downstairs so I'm not annoying people at work Okay, alright What do you do, Rowan? I work in a crystal shop Oh, crystal shop My work in a crystal shop. She runs crystals.
Starting point is 00:35:46 Oh, crystal shop. My kids love a crystal shop. Oh, you need to bring them in. But I'm always on edge and nothing makes me nervous as being in a crystal shop because I'm like, they could break anything at any stage. You'd be probably safer taking a bull into that
Starting point is 00:36:01 crystal shop. Don't pick that up. What happens if you do break a crystal? Do you have to pay for it? Probably, yes. Yeah, right. Now, crystals are good for all sorts, aren't they? Healing powers and...
Starting point is 00:36:15 Yep, healing powers, making you feel good. What if I've got a crystal that I can rub on top of my head? No, I don't think there's any crystal for that. Sorry. Hey, Roanne. Yes? I don't know if you know this, but Ben and myself are on a mission to become great people.
Starting point is 00:36:31 Right. Yeah, to undo all the horrible acts that we've done in the years gone by. Yes. And you actually messaged us and you said you've got a school camp that you need to pay for. Now, talk us through,
Starting point is 00:36:42 last year it was, what, $50? This year they've really ramped things up. Yeah they have. It's $250 this year. Jesus, where are they going? Camping in Hawaii? I think it's Kintui that they're going to. Kintui or the Hawaii of New Zealand. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:58 So $250 is well that's $250 John. Sorry. Are you still there? Just ignore that. Yeah I don't know, it's quite a lot of money. I thought it was only going to be $50. well that's $250 are you still there? yes I am I don't know it's quite a lot of money I thought it was only going to be $50 but we see we're still going to do good
Starting point is 00:37:11 it'll be nice does she sound like a $250? I don't know if I want to spend $250 on her can you still hear me? yes I can did you hear the bit of how I don't want to spend $250 on you? that's fine. No, we do.
Starting point is 00:37:27 I'm overriding it. We want to pay for your child's camp. $250 on behalf of the Hats. Oh, my gosh. That is so amazing. Thank you so much. Oh, I'm crying now. See, this is the feeling.
Starting point is 00:37:40 This is a good feeling we don't get too often, John. This is doing something nice. Are you okay? Yeah, I'm fine. Thank you so, so much. Oh, you're very welcome. Now, can I just do a little quick consumer survey? Don't, hang on.
Starting point is 00:37:53 Would we also have had tears with $50? This is just amazing. But yeah, $50, I would have cried with that as well. Would have had a cry over $50, Ben? No, no. We're paying you for the whole thing that Would have had a cry over $50 Ben No we're paying you for the whole thing $250 You sound like you deserve it I hope your daughter has a wonderful camp and that's on us
Starting point is 00:38:14 Oh my gosh thank you so much It really means a lot to you It's just amazing thank you so much You're very welcome. Geez, it feels good to do good deeds. It does.
Starting point is 00:38:27 It does. We should do this more often. No, it feels, yeah. Well, thankfully for you, my friend, we've still got months worth to do. Yeah, true. Oh, listen, you're an absolute champion, and I hope your daughter enjoys the school camp, okay? Oh, she will.
Starting point is 00:38:40 Thank you so, so much. No, you're very welcome. We really do appreciate you listening to the show as well, all right? So thank you. Thank you so much. No, you're very welcome. We really do appreciate you listening to the show as well. All right, so thank you. Thank you so much. All right. Have a lovely day. Bye.
Starting point is 00:38:50 Oh, my gosh. That was, you see, how good I said this is what I wanted us to do. Good deeds. That felt good. That did feel good. Rowan, that meant such a lot to her, so that was really cool to do. Yeah. So that's three deeds down, and we're also trying to win you money here at Resene.
Starting point is 00:39:05 Oh, my God. Jesus. If we're not Kiwi Back New Zealanders of the Year next year, then. I mean, Jesus, step aside. Step aside, mate. You can keep doing your water to wine thing, but look at us. Look at us here in a Resene paint shed. We are trying to win you money, as John O said, at Resene, stacking paint cans.
Starting point is 00:39:23 Next, with your help, do we stack more cans? We've already got $250, $2,500, sorry, to give away. Next, you decide if we keep going on the hits. You're on the hits, Jono and Ben, on a Friday, a long weekend. Winter Olympics start tonight. The opening ceremony happening about 2 o'clock in New Zealand time. But right now, we're at Resene, performing our own Olympics of some sort, balancing paint cans. Yeah, great comparison there, Ben Boyce.
Starting point is 00:39:52 Appearing at the Olympic Games. Okay, they've trained for many, many years. They're the peak people. We've trained for many, many minutes for this. So what we are doing, if you've just joined us, stacking Resene paint tins, one on top of another, each worth $250. If they topple over, there's no money for you. Okay? Nothing. 4487 is the text if you want to just text Rosene and you'll be in the
Starting point is 00:40:14 draw for that cash. And we're going to you. We're going to you for advice because we don't want to do this on our own, do we Ben Boyce? No, that's right. So, so far we've got two and a half. I don't know why I keep using your full name. That's nice, Jonathan Pryor. We're at two and a half thousand dollars is what we've won so far because it hasn't toppled. But as you said before, if it does topple, we have no money to give away. So it's getting a bit tense now as we sort of put cans one on top of each other
Starting point is 00:40:37 and things start to get a little rickety. Thanks, Ben Boyce. Samantha, you're on the air. Can you believe it, babes? Oh, my gosh, hey. It's a game-changer, mate. It really is. How's your weekend going to go this weekend, Samantha?
Starting point is 00:40:51 Hopefully excellent. Yeah, yeah. What are you doing? Just relaxing at home for the weekend, hopefully just after I finish work today. And hopefully you're relaxing on a bit of money that we're going to win you. Okay, Ben Boyce. Yes, thank you for using my full name again. Samantha, are we putting another
Starting point is 00:41:09 can on or not? Do we pull out now? Do we play it safe? Try for another. Try for another. So this is going to take it up to $2,750. I'm putting another paint tin. Razine Mother Nature on top. You are a risk taker, Samantha.
Starting point is 00:41:25 We love it. It's on safely. It is on safe and sound. Thank you very much. Charlotte, welcome. You're on. 0800 the hits. Charlotte, do we put another can on, add another 250 to this pile of money?
Starting point is 00:41:37 What do you reckon, Charlotte? Great chat, Charlotte. I reckon, Juliet, was Charlotte going to go yes or no? She was going to go yes. Okay, let's do this again. Resin Twilight Zone is the name of this paint can. Hi, Debra. How are you this morning?
Starting point is 00:41:51 Yeah, good morning, guys. Ben Boyce has very gentle hands, soft hands. I would love those hands to do some stuff to me because he is placing these cans on like a true pro. He is becoming slower and a bit more calculated. I'm getting a little bit more nervous right now. Debs, are we putting another 250 on top of the Resene pile? Oh, yeah, definitely.
Starting point is 00:42:12 Don't be so nonchalant about it. This poor guy, he's under the pump. His anxiety is at an all-time high. He hates letting people down and loud noises. Two of his fears, and he's placed another one on Debs. I think we stop there. I think we give people time to text Resene to 4487 if they want to win the money.
Starting point is 00:42:31 We'll come back very shortly and we'll see if we want to put more paint cans on or if we want to stop. Just a little breather. Composure. 10 deep breaths. Have a light hour. Meditation. So funny. It's very stressful. Yeah. A lot of money is literally in our hands right now. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:42:47 Well, not literally, because the painting's literally in your hands. But, you know. Okay, okay. Metaphorically, there is money in our hands. We'll be back very shortly with more cash. Five words for 5K on the hits. You're only five words away from a massive payday. It is our Game of Word Association.
Starting point is 00:43:02 We play it every morning around about this time. Match all five words with our five words words and you win $5,000. You say that every day. Do you end up saying that in your sleep? I know. It's like ingrained in your memory. It is, yeah. When you're old and senile and he's having flashbacks,
Starting point is 00:43:16 it's our Game of Word Association. Match our five words with our five words. What's wrong with old man boy? Oh, don't worry. He's just got some post-traumatic. He's trying to match five words again. Sitting in the Ryman rotting away oh yes indeed let's give away
Starting point is 00:43:29 $5,000 joining us on 0800 the hits right now is Imogen she's a sales rep she works with dairy cows and I bet they're good colleagues Imogen they're great colleagues g'day guys lovely to have you on bit smelly but they don't talk back or give you much grief yeah correct correct now Imogen you've got to decide right now Jono, Ben or Julia Lovely to have you on. A bit smelly, but they don't talk back or give you much grief. Yeah, correct, correct.
Starting point is 00:43:45 Now, Imogen, you've got to decide right now. Jono, Ben or Juliet, who do you want to step into either the soundproof booth or step away from the location we are at received? Well, maybe we'll go into the soundproof spray paint booth. Oh, yeah, there's one of those. Yeah, yeah, okay. Okay, Jono, you can head into the soundproof spray paint booth. Yeah, well, just don't turn it on, Ben, okay?
Starting point is 00:44:06 I don't want to come out looking like a smurf. Oh, I really want to do that right now. But I'm not because Imogen, he's around the corner. His headphones are off. He can't hear us. I'm going to say the first word this morning and see what pops into your head when I say happy, happy. Ooh, I'm going to go sad.
Starting point is 00:44:27 Yeah, I was thinking the opposite. That popped into my head. Real estate is word number two, real estate. That's hard. Would you go agent or would you go house? Let's go agent. Real estate agent, yeah. Producer Julia, are you matching two from two so far?
Starting point is 00:44:45 Yeah, so far. Here's one that's quite fitting. This thing is, we're at Rosene. The next word is paint. Paint. Rosene. Rosene. Yeah, well, hopefully he's got a...
Starting point is 00:44:57 You got our sponsor in there. Hopefully Jono will. We'll find out in just a few moments. Tear. T-E-A-R. Tear. Oh. Okay. we'll find out in just a few moments uh tear t-e-a-r tear oh um okay um t-e-a-r so like tear paper or um yeah let's go paper it's here paper and finally the final word is lamb. L-A-M-B. Lamb. You've got more experience with cows by the sound of it,
Starting point is 00:45:28 but lamb? Yeah. Let's go lamb chop, because everyone loves the chop. Yum. Lamb chop or chops? Oh, gosh. Let's go chops. We'll make it fun. Chops with an S. Okay. Alright. You played a really good game. I'm going to run around the corner now and try and... Come on. There you go. He's coming back.
Starting point is 00:45:44 You can't see me when I wave, so I had to come running around for you. Yeah, you did. How did Imogen go? She did really well. It'd be interesting to see, particularly on Word 3, if you say the same word as she did. And I'm hoping you do for the sake of your job. But anyway,
Starting point is 00:46:00 let's get into it right now. Okay, I mean, let's do this. Let's win you 5K for the long weekend, eh? First word I said to Imogen this morning was happy. Okay, the first word I'm going to say to you is sad. Well done. One from five. Let's try and win money for heading into the long weekend.
Starting point is 00:46:16 Real estate. Agent. He's coming in really confident. I've been sniffing paint back there. I feel great. Well, speaking of paint, paint is the third word this morning. Paint. Resign.
Starting point is 00:46:29 Yes. Oh, well done. He got the sponsor in. Imogen got the sponsor in. Everyone's happy. Well, it's been good when we're back there sniffing it all. It's been great. Maybe they're not so happy now after that.
Starting point is 00:46:39 We are three from five. Tear is word number four. T-E-A-R, tear. I'll go tear drop. I see why you thought like that. Imogen said paper. Oh, Imogen, I'm sorry. It's okay.
Starting point is 00:46:58 Oh, mate. I've got some tears right now, too. I was feeling good. They're crocodile tears, though. Yeah, I was feeling good. And finally, the last word was feeling good. Crocodile tears though. Yeah, it was feeling good. And finally, the last word was lamb this morning.
Starting point is 00:47:07 Lamb chops. Oh my God. So close, Imogen. WTF. Oh, Imogen, I'm so sorry.
Starting point is 00:47:16 We didn't quite work out today. Hey, you know what, Imogen? Yeah? I like the cut of your jib. I like the way you milk those cows. So we're going to give you $250.
Starting point is 00:47:26 Okay, Rosine. Oh, my God. My friends at Rosine back there, when I was huffing away, they said, hey, give Imogen $250. Where did this come from? I don't know. I've just done it now. So we're going to give you $250.
Starting point is 00:47:35 Are we? Are we? $250 for you, Emmy. Oh, thank you so much. Okay. All right. Okay. Although I will take one of the tins away from our challenge
Starting point is 00:47:44 because next we return to the Tower of Paint Cans. Each can worth $250. We're going up higher. Do we add another can to the pile? If you want to win this cash, 4487 on the text. Just text REZEEN. It is the hits. You've got Jono and Ben.
Starting point is 00:48:01 It is Mitch James, Jono and Ben, 7.55, heading into a long weekend. Both of us had to fill up the cars on the way this morning. Jeez, petrol's getting expensive now, isn't it? I used the six cents off per litre voucher that I got from the supermarket. Big player, big player. Big player, baby. Oh, yeah, stay with Jono. That's why I stay with Jono.
Starting point is 00:48:16 He always treats me to stuff like that. So good. Let's see some Spy. Spy. No WhatsApp. Spy.co.nz. He was me for my discount vouchers That's right
Starting point is 00:48:26 Alright we'll hand it over to Judge Juliet Who's about to sentence these celebrities To three minutes of harsh judgement What's going on Jude? Kiwi actress and comedian and someone that you guys Used to work with Rose Matafeo She was on Graham Norton So we did speak about this last week but the episode
Starting point is 00:48:42 Hadn't been released I actually managed to try, and I still don't think it's been released, but there's been a video released of the I think it was last night on TV3 Was it last night? Was it? That came out. Oh, wonderful. Well, I thought I was like ahead of the times managing to track down. No, no, no, your generation
Starting point is 00:48:57 is not watching network television. Stop pretending. So there's a thing called network TV and basically they tell you what you should be watching. Ah, I see. And then you get the extra added bonus of commercials in between the show. Oh, it's a wonderful time. And it's a race against time when you're watching the commercials live
Starting point is 00:49:15 and then the show starts back and you're in the bathroom. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But sometimes the commercials are too loud and you need to turn them down just a little bit. Or Jono has them on mute. So when he first introduced Rose, are too loud and you need to turn them down just a little bit. Well, Jono has them on mute. So, when he first introduced Rose, he basically ended up roasting New Zealand
Starting point is 00:49:30 to do with the red chair. Rose, by the way, we've had so many New Zealanders on the show, but they're normally, at the end of the show, on... Oh, come on! Graham! We did just **** on my country. No, it's very true. It is very true. But they're like lemmings. They just queue up for that from the pink chair. Why is it always New Zealanders in the red chair? I don't need to just **** on my country. No, it's very true. It is very true. But they're like lemmings.
Starting point is 00:49:45 They just queue up for that from Pink Tray. Why is it always New Zealanders in the red chair? I don't know. Because they experience the most messed up stuff, I think. You know, New Zealand is a very, very small, lovely place. But you've been to New Zealand, haven't you? Never. What the hell?
Starting point is 00:49:58 Why would I? They all come here. She's doing so amazingly well, Rose. I was very proud to see her on that. I know. I was so happy for her. A surreal moment. We got to obviously work with Rose for a while,
Starting point is 00:50:10 and I think every comedian's got that time where they go back and go, oh, God, I did that. And we are that moment for Rose. Yeah. Now, we have that footage, Rose, and we will release it. We're just waiting for the right moment. Those dark, dark tapes. We're not on Graham Norton next week,
Starting point is 00:50:25 then there's got to be that stuff released. We've got nothing to lose. We can put those tapes out. You know what we've got of you. Some pretty dubious pun-based sketches. Oh dear God,
Starting point is 00:50:33 be worried. Oh God, so awesome. It's so cool. And that is your Spy Update for this hour. For more, you can head to thehits.co.nz.
Starting point is 00:50:40 After eight o'clock, stick around New Zealand. We are balancing paint cans here at Resene. Every can is worth $250. So far, I think we're over $3,000 we have to give away. But if the cans topple over, we give away no money. Now, we've brought in the scissor lift.
Starting point is 00:50:54 And producer B Humps is operating the scissor lift. It's getting high that we don't want to risk the tower toppling over. So we're going to be putting this to good use after 8 o'clock this morning. Thousands of thousands of dollars we have up for grabs, all going well, and all going well, the sizzle-up will be working. Oh, yeah, it is working. It's beeping, it's making noises, back with cash after 8. Jono and Ben.
Starting point is 00:51:16 We had the hits back to school roll call thanks to Slingshot, and someone heard their name, and I think we're going to chuck them in the drawer for five grand a year's worth slingshot, and those Chromebooks as well. $100 is all yours too, Marie Thomas. Awesome. Lovely. You're in that drawer, eh? Brilliant.
Starting point is 00:51:33 And you know what you need to go and do, Marie Thomas? You promised me one thing. What's that? You go and lead your best life. But still listen to us at the same time. But still listen to us, yeah. Don't go leading too. Don't go away.
Starting point is 00:51:44 Have us in your ears somehow. I don't know. Don't go leading to, don't go away. Have us in your ears somehow. I don't know. Technology. Marie Thomas, love you babes. Oh, wow.
Starting point is 00:51:49 We really went from one zero to one hundred there, didn't we? Have a great weekend, all right? Thank you. Hey,
Starting point is 00:51:54 now we are broadcasting this morning from Resene. We are stacking paint cans. Every can that we stack is worth $250 and we'll hopefully give that money away before nine o'clock
Starting point is 00:52:04 this morning, unless, of course, things come crashing down. Now, this has captured the hearts and imagination of Aotearoa Ben Boy. So many texts coming through if you want to win this money. 4487, just text the word REZEEN. Another $250 potentially to go on top of our tower. It's starting to get a little left-leaning.
Starting point is 00:52:24 It's almost sort of Green Party-ish. Sort get a little left-leaning. It's almost sort of Green Party-ish. Sort of James Shaw lefty. It might swing back the other way, might get David Seymour by the end of it, who knows. So we're at $3,250. Shall I put another one on? Shall I try and put another one to get us to three and a half grand? Should I do this? Ben Boyce has become the official placer of the tins and as we mentioned before there's no grooves that slot into each other. So there's no locking mechanism. But that right there is the sound of literally nothing but $250 on top of the pile.
Starting point is 00:52:55 Yeah. So we hope you hear no sound because if it comes crashing down, we can't give away the money. Yeah. It's just very nerve-wracking. Even that felt a little flimsy because they're empty cans, empty paint cans here at Resene. That was a Resene white pointer can, but no paint inside. Beautiful integration of the colour there too. So 0800 the hits.
Starting point is 00:53:12 We've put this over to you, Aotearoa. Do we place another can on? Do we keep going? Do we risk it toppling over? Do we play it safe? I don't know. These are all questions you need to answer right now on 0800 The Hits. 4487 is the text, and
Starting point is 00:53:27 hopefully we're going to be giving away thousands. We're going to be making it rain money, and not paint by the end of the show. We even have a scissor lift, so that's how ambitious we could go with these paint cans. Give us a text, Razine, 4487. It is The Hits. The Hits. Now we're broadcasting
Starting point is 00:53:43 this morning from Resene as we try and stack paint cans on top of each other. Each can is worth $250. We could potentially give away thousands and thousands of dollars, but if the paint cans come toppling over, nothing. We are in the Resene warehouse right now where
Starting point is 00:53:59 dreams and paint come true. That's what happens in this room right here. And right now there is more tension in this room than being my hamstrings on Tuesday night Pilates class. This is intense. So 0800, if we keep adding cans to the pile, obviously the dollar value goes up. However, if it topples over, there's nothing. And if you want to win this cash, you need to text 4487. And I need to stipulate, if you are the person who says stop on the phone, it doesn't
Starting point is 00:54:25 necessarily mean you win the money. No, we're going to call someone back from the text machine. I need to stipulate that, Ted. It was a stipulation. I know it really meant a lot to you, this. I was like, give me some of your time to stipulate. Thank you for that. So we're about $4,000 now, I think. Things are getting a little bit wobbly,
Starting point is 00:54:41 but it's still going okay. I reckon we can push it for a few more if we want to keep pushing it, but it's up to you, I know, Andrew. Again, to the political references, before it was swinging to the Greens, it went back towards ACT. Now it's kind of teetering in between National and Labour. Sort of centre, isn't it, at the moment? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:54:57 But it's not a solid centre. It could swing either way just to get the public vote. I'm on the sizzle lift right now. I've never used one of these before. Bamboo's a wearer. Just what I've never used one of these before. You look bamboozled. What I do is push that thing there. Did you teach him how to use the sizzle lift to produce the beer? No, we didn't.
Starting point is 00:55:12 But okay, should we go to the phones and see if we should put some more cans on there? Let's do it. On 0800 the hits right now. We're joined by Mike. Welcome. How are you? Hey, mate. I'm good, thanks. Mike, your thoughts. Are we going one more? Are we pushing the limits on this can tower? Yeah, chuck one on there, mate. That'm good, thanks. Mike, your thoughts. Are we going one more? Are we pushing the limits on this can tower? Yeah, chuck one on there, mate.
Starting point is 00:55:28 That's another 250. Okay, Ben Boyce, he's trying to manage a microphone, a paint can, and a scissor lift at the same time. Here we go, here we go. Steady hands, steady hands, steady hands. He's higher right now than he was at Rhythm and Vines in 2015. Stop talking, stop talking. It's a gentle, there we go, Mike.
Starting point is 00:55:44 It's good, it's good, it's good. Okay, it's good. There's a slight wobble. Okay, this is good. It's a gentle... There we go, Mike. It's good. Okay. There's a slight wobble. It's waving back and forth. It wouldn't get a building consent of the council turned up today, but thank you very much, Mike. Make sure you text Razeen to 4487, Mike. You could win that money. Hopefully all going well. We'll get Trina on the air. How are you, Trines?
Starting point is 00:55:59 Hello. First question, do you mind being called Trines? I like being called Trina. Oh, yeah, Trina. Sorry, make it official. Are we going another 250 here, Trina? Why not? Why not?
Starting point is 00:56:11 Let's go for it. Why the hell not? Now, this is all on you, Trina, if it topples over. No money for the nation, okay? She's willing to take that risk. Oh, here we go. I'm going up higher in the scissor lift. We're going above it.
Starting point is 00:56:21 Here we go. Can I just say how painfully slow the scissor lift is? And here we go. He's putting it on quietly. Gentle, gentle, gentle. Yes! Yes! It's like a game of reverse Jenga where you're adding stuff to it.
Starting point is 00:56:35 Oh, my gosh. Okay, so what are we sitting on total? I think now we're just 250. We're one can away from $5,000 if I've done my maths correctly. I think Harriet's here as well. Yes, okay. So we push it to 5K. 0800 the hits.
Starting point is 00:56:50 We'll come back next. The tower is... Head to our social media, the hits breakfast, because you can see how high it is. You can gauge whether we add another can to it. All right. Can we do it? A can-do attitude here at Resene.
Starting point is 00:57:02 Hopefully giving away that money if things don't come crashing down. It is the hits. Breakfast with Jon come crashing down. It is the hits. Breakfast with Jono and Ben. It is the hits, Jono and Ben. We're at Resene this morning. We're balancing paint cans. I'm up a scissor lift at the moment, very high in the Resene garage, as we try and balance cans.
Starting point is 00:57:18 Each can's worth $250 that we hopefully will give the money away unless the tower of paint cans topples over. Then we have nothing. So we've got to gauge when we stop. We're at $6,000 so far. We're not far away from the warehouse roof, to be honest. And I, for one, I'm not adverse to ripping this roof off and continuing to build.
Starting point is 00:57:37 Raise the roof. Jono, you came up with the genius idea, because we've been doing this on social media. We had bigger paint cans. We had the four litre tins. And now you're like, well, they didn't stipulate what size. So we've put some this on social media, we had bigger paint cans. We had the four-litre tins. And now you're like, well, they didn't stipulate what size. So we've put some smaller ones on top, and that's got us another $1,000. We've gone from $5,000 to $6,000 in the last outcast song.
Starting point is 00:57:54 With the one-litre cans. Now, the decision is in your hands, old Te Arawa. Do we keep stacking, or do we pull out? Remembering, if it collapses, there's no money. We'll go to the phones right now on 0800. This is high-pressure stuff. My palms are honestly sweating. I'm nervous.
Starting point is 00:58:14 My heart's beating. It's really tense up here. Unfortunately, yes, he did have mum's spaghetti last night, and it's all over his hits top. It's not pretty. But let's go to Kelly. Welcome. Are we pushing this further?
Starting point is 00:58:24 We've got the one-litre cans we can add on, Kel. Welcome. Are we pushing this further? We've got the one-litre cans we can add on, Kel. Yes. Keep going. Oh, Kelly, you mad dog. Really? This is, you know, the country could turn on you like they have Jacinda, Kelly, if this goes bad.
Starting point is 00:58:37 This is going to happen. Okay, okay, okay. Put the mic down. Kelly says put it on. Ben Boyce, very gentle. I feel like I'm commentating a golf tournament here, as he takes the can and places it on, it's wobbling back and forth no one in here breathe
Starting point is 00:58:53 no one, a breath would blow that thing over right now, Kelly it's on, it's on, it's on you've added to the prize pool $6,500 $6,500 Tetrazine right now, 4487 because you could be winning that money provided $6,500. Oh. Text Razine right now, 4487, because you could be winning that money,
Starting point is 00:59:10 provided, of course, we stop at the right time. We'll bring Debbie on the air, shall we? Debbie, you're on New Zealand's Breakfast. No, don't even breathe. You can't breathe, Debbie. If you breathe through the phone, it could blow this tower over. What are we doing? Are we pushing it or are we stopping?
Starting point is 00:59:24 It's time to stop. It's time to stop. It's time to stop. Stop the madness. You've are we stopping? It's time to stop. It's time to stop. It's time to stop. Stop the madness. You've had your fun. It's time to stop. We're stopping at 6-5, Debbie? I think so. I think it's better that someone wins that than no one wins anything.
Starting point is 00:59:35 And that's a sensible approach, Debbie. Are we stopping? We're stopping. Well, can I add a little spanner in the works or a paint stirrer in the can as it may be? I've found some test pots here, Debbie. Again, they didn't stipulate how big. Or we could put that on top. Do you want to put a test pot on or not?
Starting point is 00:59:49 Do we want a tiny little test pot, Debbie? Just a little test pot. Nope. Nope. Tiny, tiny test pot. No, no. Okay. Okay, well, Debbie's made the call.
Starting point is 01:00:00 We're pulling pin. What would have happened? Okay, so $6,200. Thanks to Razine. $6,500. $6,500. Have we got to $ five yeah no six two five no you're massive terrible all day six thousand two hundred fifty dollars we could go to six five if you want debbie no no okay okay so razine text razine to four four eight seven someone will win that next but you
Starting point is 01:00:22 want me to try one more what would have happened if we had pushed the limits? Did Debbie make the right call? Could we have got to... Oh! Debbie! Debbie! It toppled over like a poorly constructed tower of paint. Oh, Debbie, you made the right call.
Starting point is 01:00:45 Well done. Alright, so text 4487, text Rosene, someone is going to win $6,250 next. It is the hits. You've got Jono and Ben. The hits. You're on the hits, Jono and Ben, 8.33 on your Friday, heading into a long Waitangi weekend.
Starting point is 01:01:01 Now, Rosene have a huge range of paints, ideal for decorating everything from roofs and decks to ceilings and floors and everything in between, inside and out. And this morning, we have been stacking Resene paint cans, one on top of another. Each one is worth $250. We had to decide when to stop because if it toppled down,
Starting point is 01:01:17 we had no money to give away. And Debbie, she's a cool head. She always makes great life decisions. She phoned us up and said, stop the craziness. You know, it's been enough. You've gone on. You've had your fun. You even said a little test spot. She was like, no, don't risk it. We've ended up with $6,250
Starting point is 01:01:31 and Ben Boyce just 10 seconds left of that wonderful Pink song. You know the bit where a kid starts singing. You demanded that Juliet get audio of the tower collapsing over and she's like, listen, I can't do that. You're like, get it woman. Your job's on the line. You'll never work in this town again. I had been trying to go, Juliet, Juliet, Juliet, all through the pink song,
Starting point is 01:01:47 but she finally listened to us. She did say, you'll never work in this city again thing. But anyway, we don't have audio of it collapsing, but just imagine... No! That's what it sounded like. So Debbie made the right call. We shouldn't have pushed it one further, which means now someone who's texted
Starting point is 01:02:03 and resigned 4487 is going to win $6,250 or as Chris Hipkins would say about five million shots of Pfizer but we didn't disclose how much we don't know all right let's make a call everyone there's so many texts that come through to Resene at 4487? And we'll call someone back right now and see if they answer. It's been a fun morning. It's been really fun. I felt a lot of nerves, though, trying to pass those fake hands. Hi, who's that? Hi, it's Emily.
Starting point is 01:02:35 Hi, how are you? Hi, Emily. It's Jono and Ben here from the Hits Radio station. Hi! Hi! No one's ever that happy to hear from us. Normally it's like, what do you guys want? Yeah, or...
Starting point is 01:02:48 Oh, I thought I was just another bill calling or something. No, it's us. You've been obviously listening this morning as we've been stacking our paint cans at Resign. Yes, I have. I've been sweating. I've been having anxiety. It's like I'm watching a real-life movie going,
Starting point is 01:03:02 stop! No, don't! What are we doing? Well, we stopped at $6,250 just before. I thought it was going to count as $500. No, I screwed up the bet. It's my bad. I'll take that one on the chin.
Starting point is 01:03:16 Yeah, yeah, sorry. Don't get ahead of yourself. Pull it back. Well, you have won $6,250 thanks to Rosene. No way! Oh, my God! You have won! Congratulations.
Starting point is 01:03:33 Just by texting Rosene and just by coming along for the ride with us. Just to confirm, $6,250. Oh, my God. Thank you, Rosene. Thank you. Thank you for being a beautiful place. Thank you for standing down an outstanding guy for us. Honestly, this means so much to me and my family.
Starting point is 01:03:51 So thank you so, so much. What's the money going to go towards, Mary? Oh my goodness. I've got more to explain now. I'm just joking. It's going towards renovation for our business. We've been struggling quite a bit. We've been doing reno for the last four months. It's been costing so much more than we anticipated,
Starting point is 01:04:08 and we're just at the red line at the moment. So that money's going to go towards just paying back all the bills and helping out with the renovations for our business. So thank you so much. You tell me what paint you've been using in those renovations. Don't say too much. Resine. No, resine. Yes, there weux. It's Rosene. No, Rosene.
Starting point is 01:04:26 Yes, there we go. That's right. That's right. The best paint that, you know. The paint that professionals use. Yeah, no, that's good. Well, it sounds like you really need that money, and it couldn't go to anyone more deserving, so enjoy that, and thank you so much for listening to the show.
Starting point is 01:04:40 Thank you. Emily, are you having another child? Oh, no, no no make another one and name it Rosene what a way to start a long weekend all thanks to Rosene and it's the hits you got Jono and Ben Jono and Ben breakfast on the hits
Starting point is 01:04:59 brought to you by Rosene New Zealand's most trusted paint Kiwi made since 1946 that long weekend to do before, Jono, but yesterday I got outsmarted by a kid. And it left me rattled. It's a great day, actually, in your career as a child when you realise you can manipulate others around you
Starting point is 01:05:23 and then you spend the rest of your life doing that. It's a wonderful realisation. But look at me around you, and then you spend the rest of your life doing that. It's a wonderful realization. But look at me. Look, I don't have a lot of strength. So I would say I couldn't even have more strength than the kids. So I'm like, but surely I've got more intellect. Surely that's the one thing that I've got more experience on, more life skills. Just because you've spent more time on the earth than they have.
Starting point is 01:05:41 It's a default thing, isn't it? But my daughter, Indy, last night after dinner came up and she was like, can I have some ice cream? Can we have some ice cream? Now, this is the same girl who wrote a questionnaire for Santa. Yeah. Pretty in-depth one as well. She got into some pretty tricky questions for Santa.
Starting point is 01:05:57 She's got a good track record of doing due diligence on stuff. You tried to buy her a Def Leppard t-shirt. It's cotton on over the weekend and she started buy her a Def Leppard t-shirt at Cotton On over the weekend and she started questioning who was Def Leppard. She wouldn't purchase the t-shirt without listening to the Def Leppard's back catalogue and she ended up not getting the t-shirt. She wasn't sure about this. So she came up to me last night and she's like, can I have some ice cream now?
Starting point is 01:06:16 I know you often say that I like to eat healthy and you like to, but you know, everything in moderation. You need that bloody 0% ice cream. What is that, one zilch? You ice cream what's that one zilch maybe sucking back on some zilch the kids but the thing was in this occasion that the kids had already had i'd already got them a treat in the afternoon that i had a treat that had a chocolate treat so i was questioning whether ice cream had a quarter of a piece of a cadbury
Starting point is 01:06:38 so i was like hey you've had a treat in the afternoon maybe ice cream you know maybe not tonight but maybe tomorrow night. And then Indy came up with a phrase, a reason why she should have ice cream. And I was like, oh, my goodness, I need to record this because this is a fact that I don't know. Have a listen to this. What rubbish are you trying to tell me? That Albert Einstein said that children need an ice cream every day. Albert Einstein.
Starting point is 01:07:03 This is Albert Einstein, one of the smartest people in the world. One of the greatest physicists ever. And he took time out of his research to say, hey, you know what? By the way, children need ice cream. One a day. How many, Albert? One a day. One a day.
Starting point is 01:07:16 I'll just get back to this physicist stuff now. So I kind of went, OK, Albert Einstein is a great factor for radio. I could play that tomorrow. And I was, all right, you can have an ice cream. And then afterwards, I was like, well, maybe I should do a bit more Googling around Albert Einstein. Can I already answer this question for you? Albert Einstein definitely didn't say kids should have an ice cream every day. No, he didn't.
Starting point is 01:07:34 Like, there's no record of that, even on the internet. Like, yeah, apparently he loved ice cream. That was the only thing, like, you'd have the occasional ice cream. But nowhere on the internet is Albert Einstein saying that children should have ice cream every day. Yeah, well, he was pretty occupied with quantum mechanics, I think, Albert Einstein, to worry about kids' ice cream consumption. Later, as I put my daughter Indy to bed, I was like, that Albert Einstein thing, did you learn it at school?
Starting point is 01:08:00 Where did you get it from? Did you overhear that? Because I couldn't find it anywhere. I Googled for 25 minutes. She's like, oh no, I made it up. I was like, oh, she's outsmarted by a kid. And I had to appreciate it. You're so gullible, Ben.
Starting point is 01:08:11 I'm so gullible. And it does sound like some propaganda that Margaret Tip Top said one day just to shift some trumpets to kids. You know, I would have thought she'd have one of these a day. Did he? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:08:22 No, take my word for it. Buy a trumpet. Get out of here. Yeah. So outsmarted by a kid. Not a great feeling. Not a great feeling for me? Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, take my word for it. Buy a trumpet. Get out of here. Yeah. So Art Smarter by Kid. Not a great feeling. Not a great feeling for me. Hey, next on the show,
