Starting point is 00:00:00 The Hits, with the Jono and Ben podcast. Cheers to Dilma, making the world a better tea. I was reading a lovely story about a guy, a dad in America, a stepdad, and he has become a Swifty. And it's a new wave of parents becoming Swifties to bond with their kids. Has he crashed the website? He probably was. He probably has. Played part of crashing the website.
Starting point is 00:00:21 And he went to a lot of effort. He's got a stepdaughter. She's a huge Taylor Swift fan, and he wanted to bond with her, And he went to a lot of effort he's got a stepdaughter, she's a huge Taylor Swift fan and he was like, wanted to bond with her so he went on Reddit, he got people from around the world to help school up his knowledge on Taylor Swift, then he started dropping in, you know, rumours, talked to her about Taylor Swift rumours and conversations and lyrics and all that sort of stuff and
Starting point is 00:00:37 they've now got this amazing bond, they've gone to the concert together as well and he's like, I would recommend to any parent in the world, you know if you find something your kids are into and you become into together as well, and he's like, I would recommend to any parent in the world, you know, if you find something that your kids are into and you become into it as well, you can really create a lovely bond with your kids. Oh, that is, yeah, that is really lovely. And I know Jen, my wife, she took Poppy to Harry Styles,
Starting point is 00:00:55 and now she's a Harry Styles fan. She is style maniac, whatever they call them. Yeah, it happens, right? She's got piles for styles. But you, the thing is, you never want to be left alone as a 40-something white cis male at a Taylor Swift concert. You always want to have your kid with you. Yeah, true.
Starting point is 00:01:11 Don't you? I mean, it happened to poor Ben boys. At Benny, didn't it? Benny and Little Mix. Yeah, yeah. You were left holding a sign at Little Mix. I heart Little Mix. I thought it said, like, I've got a little something for you or something.
Starting point is 00:01:22 No, no, I heart Little Mix. I've got something little for you. But we want to know this morning, because I imagine everyone that's been a parent has got into something because their kids are into it, have tried to form that sort of bond and now becomes a bit of an expert about something that they would not have known about had it not been for their kids. It kind of gets subconsciously manipulated into your mind, doesn't it? Like a long form sort of prisoner of war torture.
Starting point is 00:01:47 Yeah. I mean, I've been banging on about it the last couple of days. But, of course, my daughter's been in Cats, the musical. We've been listening to that for months. And now I know all about Mungo, Jerry, Rumble, Teaser, Grizabella, Skimblescats, The Railway Cat, all the stuff that I didn't know about before because of my daughter. It's like songs and lyrics I know about.
Starting point is 00:02:06 Hopefully that information will serve you for some purpose somewhere along the way. Who knows? But it has served me. Maybe there's a cat's pub quiz or something. Served me the purpose of bonding with my daughter, which has been cool. Something that she loves is something that I have enjoyed being part of. Okay, what have you become an expert in thanks to the younger people in your life? Yeah. You've become a mega fan of, maybe there's the oldest Justin Bieber fan listening right now.
Starting point is 00:02:31 Yeah, maybe you've been to motocross or tractors or something because of your kids are into it, or superheroes. A lot of parents are all of a sudden huge Swifty fans as well, to bond with their kids and to have something in common. So we wanted to know this morning, what have you got into? Because of your kids, what are you now an expert on on 0800 The Hits? Yeah, that's the telephone number. You can text 24487. Thanks to Oscar, my son's obsession with basketball. I've been brought up to speed with all of the latest players' shooting stats,
Starting point is 00:02:59 their assists, the trades. They had the bloody draft on the weekend, didn't they? Oh, yeah, and that's a whole other thing right? And it's really taken our relationship to another level Ben too because you are a self-confessed basketball nerd and I can talk about all the intricacies of all the big trades going on. You can top line stuff
Starting point is 00:03:15 which is good. I can top line I can't dig much deeper. No that's good I appreciate it. I can give you a headline and then. Oh I see such and such. You're like yeah yeah then I say it back and then you're like I don't know any more than that but it's good but it's it. I can give you a headline and then you... Oh, I see such and such. You're like, yeah, yeah. Then I say it back and then you're like, I don't know any more than that. But it's good. But it's all right.
Starting point is 00:03:29 I can't get into the gritty basketball banter, but I can kind of loosely brush over the top of stuff. We're going to go to Imogen. Welcome. What you became an expert in late in life. Hello, how are you? We're doing well, are we? Did I tell you about Victor Webber-Namo, mate?
Starting point is 00:03:43 Number one draft. Off to the Spurs. I have no idea who that is. John O'Failly knows as well, but it's a big use of basketball, it is. Imogen, what did your kids teach you to become an expert in? Well, my dad actually became a fan of Justin Bieber because of me. Oh, your dad did? Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:06 I actually won the tickets from you guys a couple of years. Oh yes. I went to see him last year but he cancelled. That's right I remember your dad was I don't want to age but he was probably what? 62. 62? Yeah that's right. 62. Oh and he was a salty old not salty old but a hard-working man in Australia. Yes, yep, that's the one. I remember now. And he wasn't probably your typical Bieber demographic? No, no, no. He didn't actually like him, and I became really obsessed with him when I was in my teenage years,
Starting point is 00:04:37 and he had no choice but to start liking him. And then, yeah, I think he liked him more than me in the end. That's pretty cool. Overtook your obsession able image image and that's a great call. Hope your dad's doing well and you're going to have a wonderful day in Christchurch. Thank you guys, see ya. And we'll go to Tasman, we'll get you on. You became an expert in what, thanks to the kids?
Starting point is 00:04:55 Tasman? I sure did. I got my firearms licence so I can get pretty active with rifle shooting and hunting and then we noticed that my motorbike licence and I'm now sitting on my restricted, and I'm hooning around on a little Rebel motorbike. What, with your kids? With my kids, yeah. Oh, that's cool.
Starting point is 00:05:16 You big bogan. I love it. I know, I am. That's a great way to bond, though, isn't it? Yeah, that's very cool. Especially when your kids are older, like late teens, early 20s, if you don't find something in common with them, then I suppose you could potentially drift apart.
Starting point is 00:05:33 So what do they think when mum's doing burnouts on the two-wheeler? Oh, my daughter particularly just thinks it's awesome. Mum, you're such an inspiration. Oh, that's awesome. That's very cool. Bloody guns and bikes, you're such an inspiration. Oh, that's awesome. Bloody guns and bikes, you're like the common cheeros, mate. Love your work, Tims, and you're going to have a great day. The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast. And yeah, the year, Guess the Year is basically a game we like to play every week
Starting point is 00:06:01 where we play some iconic moments from a particular year. And today, Jono, you've got to try and guess the year. You can only say the year once. I want to take one answer. You can't guess multiple times. I feel like we flounder around so many times going, it could be 2024, it could be that. So now I'm just going to say when you think you've got it,
Starting point is 00:06:21 guess it once and guess it once only. But if you think you've got it before, Jono 0800 the hits, we've got some hell pizza up for grabs He's streamlined the format That's great Ben, it needed a bit of tightening up So I can, to be honest I can barely remember what I did at 5 o'clock this morning Let alone 90.95
Starting point is 00:06:37 So we're going old school this morning This particular show first aired In October that year, high school students Who weren't actually high school students in real life. Beverly Hills 90210. Yeah, that's right. Brandon Walsh. Da-na-na-na-na.
Starting point is 00:06:50 Bloody hell, Dylan had more lines on his forehead than I do. Yeah, Brandon, Brenda, Kelly, Dylan, Steve. You know, they were hanging out at the Peach Pit. Shannon Doherty, Luke Perry. High drama. I remember someone was a drug addict after smoking weed once we're drug addict now it's like what really
Starting point is 00:07:07 he's just tried some marijuana but anyway it was high drama that was legal yeah Steve Sanders so what was the year that that was first aired
Starting point is 00:07:16 Beverly Hills 90210 do you know me and my friends we all tried to dress like the cast of Beverly Hills 90210 and you had those light blue denim jeans
Starting point is 00:07:24 with a white t-shirt tucked in Doc Martens folding up the sleeves just a little bit as well what an era, Kate's phone through from the Wairarapa, Kate yeah nah yeah, do you remember Beverly Hills 90210 no not really, well good luck to you
Starting point is 00:07:39 I never watched it you never watch it, there's nothing else to watch apart from Country Calendar. Okay. I used to watch Charmed. Charmed? Oh, yeah. That was a great show as well.
Starting point is 00:07:50 Alyssa Milano. Shannon, who was Brenda on the same show, right? She was on Beverly Hills as well. Yeah. Yeah. She was on Charmed. Yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 00:07:59 I'm thinking around 97. That's not what I'm locking in. Okay. That's not what you're locking in. What, that's not what you're locking in. What about you? What do you think? What's the year? I'm going to say 95.
Starting point is 00:08:12 No, not 95. Well, keep on going. You've got another clue. Kirstie's on now. Same year. Another huge hit TV show came out. Will Smith. Will Smith.
Starting point is 00:08:21 Will Smith. Will Smith. Will Smith. Will Smith. Will Smith. Will Smith. Yeah. Don't know what ever happened to him. Blemish-free career. Now this is a story all about how my life changed with the time I spent
Starting point is 00:08:25 Like a blemish-free career Coming out of a prison and falling Oh, maybe I'm going back a bit earlier then Yeah, you're definitely going back earlier Yeah You're definitely going back earlier Kirsty, she claims she knows the year What are you thinking, Kirsty?
Starting point is 00:08:41 No, I think it is earlier I think it's the 1990 It is! 1990! Well done, Kirst! It was apparently it was 1990.
Starting point is 00:08:50 That's the first year it started. Yeah, it was a wee while ago. It makes you feel a little bit older if you do remember that.
Starting point is 00:08:55 It did go for a long time. Like, it did go for many, many seasons. Yeah, maybe I caught on to it down the line. We probably had
Starting point is 00:09:01 reruns for years to come. You were there from day one. Day one, oh, there. Day one. Oh, well, there you go. 1990. Jeez.
Starting point is 00:09:07 What else happened that year? Well, this was the biggest movie of the year. Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, they made some pottery together as a ghost. That was the most sexual pottery class I'd ever seen.
Starting point is 00:09:19 The hits. The Jono and Ben podcast. Well, it was a shocking day for fashion for me yesterday. All right. What happened? And I could probably say that for any podcast. Well, it was a shocking day for fashion for me yesterday. All right, what happened? And I could probably say that for any day. Yeah, what was different?
Starting point is 00:09:31 So we had a pretty big meeting yesterday. We met with some people, some executives. We were trying to close the deal, you know? When Ben Boyce gets the taste of blood, he's like a shark. I don't think I've closed many deals, to be honest. Yeah, we call him the shark and I'm the wolf of Bald Street. And we went into a room of people that we'd never really met before, having a conversation, shaking hands, pressing flesh, doing business stuff, closing deals.
Starting point is 00:09:56 You know how it goes. Was I there? I don't know if I've ever been part of a business deal. But, yes, from time to time we do meet with people far more important than far more important than us yeah uh the suits yeah you know meet with the suits and i walked out of our meeting with the suits went home and then i arrived at home and i was like oh dear god god forbid my zipper has been down this entire time. Oh, no. Now, these are difficult circumstances because people would have noticed.
Starting point is 00:10:32 People look, but these are people, like, you should have told me. I didn't notice. If you had noticed, you should have told me. You know, you knew. No, I didn't notice. I probably would have. I probably would have.
Starting point is 00:10:41 We're at that stage of the relationship, our relationship. I would have gone, hey, mate, your zipper's down. Yeah. And you would have told me disc have We're at that stage Of the relationship Our relationship I would have gone Hey mate Your zipper's down Yeah And you would have Told me discreetly Because you do actually You tell me
Starting point is 00:10:49 Like having your zipper down Is like It's the crotch's version Of having lettuce In your teeth Yeah And you do inform me When there's stuff
Starting point is 00:10:58 In my teeth Yeah But the problem is The people that were Meeting with the suits They would have noticed it But they're in a very fiddly position where they're like,
Starting point is 00:11:08 I feel like I should inform this person, but then as soon as I inform them, they're going to know where my eyes have been focused on. At that stage, I'm guessing they just can't wait for you to leave so they can all talk about you behind your back and go, did you see? Oh yeah, I noticed that too. That's the situation they would have been in.
Starting point is 00:11:24 They would have been having a good laugh after we left yeah yeah that's but there's no worse feeling is it when you arrive home or you actually got a moment with yourself and you realize well geez the world's seen a lot more of me than i intended today
