Starting point is 00:00:00 This John O'Bien podcast, hey that's us, brought to you by HelloFresh, the experts and tastes that Kiwis love. What's been happening in America, particularly after the Jake Paul, Mike Tyson fight over the weekend, we go live to our New York correspondent, she hosts a radio show over there in America. It's Nicole, good morning, how's things? What's going on guys? We're doing alright, so Jake Paul, Mike Tyson, mean, we didn't pay $30 for it or anything. We all had pretty much Netflix accounts. But what's the talk been like over there?
Starting point is 00:00:29 I mean, I'm still buffering, so I don't know if you are. They better get their butts in gear for Beyonce doing the halftime show for the Christmas Day football game here in the U.S. because they just announced she's going to be performing during the game on Christmas and it's going to be on Netflix. When you say butts into gear. I know, I'm triggered. Don't talk about it. All I can think of is Mike Tyson and a G-string. Why? What was that? Why do I need to see that? And then somebody told me it didn't happen to me, but their Netflix froze on his butt. It was meant to happen though, right?
Starting point is 00:01:06 Because I kind of panned down to his butt cheeks. So it was like purposeful. Someone said on social media, it was like a scene out of The Office, you know, when the cameras are on the move and it's a little awkward and it kind of pans down to it. It felt like there was a lot of buffering problems going on,
Starting point is 00:01:21 particularly in America. Did that happen quite a lot during the fight? Every single person. Like, everybody was complaining. And, like, I eventually went to sleep. My husband was just like, came into bed, and he woke me. He was like, you didn't miss anything. He was going to continue to buffer.
Starting point is 00:01:33 He was like, Mike Tyson, it was pathetic. It made him feel sad for him because he is one of the greatest to ever do it. And he really shouldn't have been in there. Be like the legend that you are. You don't need to fight a dude who clearly could take you. Now, when before, did you see the thing before when he slapped him across the face? I don't know what that was. The press conference weigh-in thing, yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:54 For two seconds when I was watching that, I was like, oh, Jake's done for. Because that was supposed to be a slap. But the sheer power of just a slap from that man, I was like, he's done. But clearly I was wrong. There have been people on social media suggesting maybe Joe Biden could be the next opponent for Jake Paul. What do you think? He probably would just hold him. A million dollar cuddle.
Starting point is 00:02:17 Yeah, a million dollar cuddle. Yeah, I mean, listen, they both made money. And I don't know. For me, I feel like even leading up to it and especially now it's over it feels real set up especially the end of the fight when they essentially kind of bowed to each other and we're like wait the bell hasn't gone the fight's not over yeah but I did give it to Jake for at least showing some respect like he's kind of this cocky jerk right and that's like his whole MO but like he did say after he won like it's an honor to be
Starting point is 00:02:46 in the ring with you you know like you're the greatest to ever do it and he wasn't gloating he was just like i really respect that you got in the ring with me so i thought that part was cool apart from the buffering issues this is probably what the first time that i've seen netflix really dipping their toes into live sports and having a live event which was watched by millions what did you think of Netflix doing it? I mean, I like the idea of it. You said most people have a Netflix account and it feels like that's where something like this should be.
Starting point is 00:03:13 Yeah, again, they need to get their butts in gear, not Tyson's butt, and try to make sure if they want to continue doing live stuff, which I think would be super cool, that they just need to get it, you know, all the quirks figured out. I was going to say, you mentioned Beyonce's, they're planning on
Starting point is 00:03:26 live streaming Beyonce. Is that an interesting choice given what, where Beyonce is at in America right now? Um, yes. I think it's an interesting choice, but money talks.
Starting point is 00:03:37 And that was the first thing I thought of was kind of like, I don't know, you think of like, to me, like a Beyonce, like a Taylor in the way that
Starting point is 00:03:44 they don't need to do these types of things. You can do what you want to do when you want to do it, right? You don't need to like, but I mean, if she's doing it, that means they really, they really offered a lot of money. I still don't understand how Netflix has the amount of money that they do. But I mean, they paid a pretty freaking penny for that. The new movie Wicked is in cinemas as of today. It's the story of the Wicked Witch before Dorothy went to Oz in the land of Oz.
Starting point is 00:04:07 It is awesome. You're green. I am. Welcome you students to Shiz University. Miss Elphaba, you can room with Miss Galinda. Don't be afraid. I'm not afraid. So much hype for this movie
Starting point is 00:04:26 We saw it the other night Megan It was incredible Well worth the hype You won't be disappointed I wasn't And we wanted to know Is that hype all over the world And we've got Nicole with us
Starting point is 00:04:35 She's our US correspondent What's the hype like over there? Is it nuts Nicole? Like nuts Like nuts Because obviously Wicked's here On Broadway forever now And that's probably one of the most popular Broadway shows.
Starting point is 00:04:47 And like Beloved. It's like the characters are very beloved. And I mean, the cast alone is insane. And just like all of the costumes. I just feel like it's going to be like this magical experience. It's going to be so beautiful. I'm very much looking forward to going to see it. But it's pretty nuts. It's something that you probably, well I'm very much looking forward to going to see it, but it's pretty nuts.
Starting point is 00:05:06 It's something that you probably, well, Kiwis listening probably don't understand, you know, having gone to New York and seeing Broadway and seeing, there are so many shows and they're on all year round. Like, we get a show in New Zealand, like, if we came to New Zealand, it'd maybe be here for two weeks, but these shows are on pretty much six, seven nights a
Starting point is 00:05:22 week, all year long. Yeah, like, sometimes when I'm complaining about, like, being stressed out or tired from working, I'm like, think about somebody like on Broadway who literally gets up, does the exact same thing night after night and has to like give it their all. Like it's their first performance because there's always like a new audience. But yeah, it's there's something very cool about, you know, because our office is near Broadway. And when you actually go to that area, it's sort of surreal, like all the different shows lined up. And it's a very cool thing.
Starting point is 00:05:48 So whenever anybody can get to New York, you have to come see a show or two. Even if you're not into Broadway, it's definitely an experience. Yeah. We actually got to see it. Ben and I, we got to see Wicked. And I had a very vocal group of people in the theater. So there was lots of clapping, cheering. Not singing, but just reacting a lot to cheer.
Starting point is 00:06:07 My wife did a bit of singing, and I was like, oh, mate, I want to hear. No one came to hear you, Amanda. I want to see Cynthia and Ariana do their thing. I mean, my wife's great, but I was like, all right. But there was one moment. There's one moment there, and it's when Ethan comes on. Who does Ethan play?
Starting point is 00:06:23 Bok. Bok, yes. Explain that for me, because I've kind of forgotten about this going on, Megan. So this is the relationship. Ariana Grande is now with Ethan, whatever his face is. Ethan Slater, yeah. Slater.
Starting point is 00:06:33 And they, I don't know the timeline. No one's sure of the timeline, but pretty much he had a wife and a baby. Nicole's making a face. I know for a fact that the timeline is cheating happened. Yes, I know for a fact. Cheating happened. And now they're together. And they have been together for a fact that the timeline is cheating happened. Yes, I know for a fact. Cheating happened. And now they're together.
Starting point is 00:06:46 And they have been together for a while now. But the first time they appeared on screen together, there was like a little bit of love interest. And everyone kind of gasped and was like, ooh. And it's funny seeing them do all this press. Like she keeps being like, I'm so happy people are getting to know him. Like she knows that he probably got so, I mean, he did. He got so much bad press and sort of looked like the bad guy and all of this.
Starting point is 00:07:09 Doesn't seem like she was like anyone pointed the finger at her. It was all like him. Like, how could he do this? I guess because he was the one married with the kid. But yeah, yeah. She seems very excited that they finally can like be out in public together and that people know who he is. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:22 People know what he did. And people were groaning and like making wincing faces in the simmers. But it was still good. It was an amazing, amazing movie. I can't wait for everyone to see it. My theory is, though, what do you reckon about this, Nicole? Now, they're going to do part one. They're going to do part two.
Starting point is 00:07:36 They've already said that. And then they'll remake The Wizard of Oz with some of the characters from Wicked playing their roles in the new version. What do you reckon? Yeah, and then they'll do a prequel and then they'll do like a reunion. Yeah, I mean, Hollywood likes to milk things until it is bone dry.
Starting point is 00:07:51 It's going to do huge numbers. And as soon as that happens, it doesn't matter if it's good or bad. They decide a way to do more. Yeah. Who would play Dorothee then? Because that's got to be the most coveted role. It's only ever been Judy Garland.
Starting point is 00:08:03 Like a Sabrina Carpenter maybe. Because she's short and got that little girl thing going on and she's got to be the most coveted role. It's only ever been Judy Garland. Like a Sabrina Carpenter, maybe. She's short and got that little girl thing going on and she's got pipes. They'd have to dye her hair, but whatever. I think we'd just cast. That's great. I like the great casting decision, Nicole. That's great. Yes. Do you want to know a fun fact about Dorothy? One year,
Starting point is 00:08:20 many years ago, I was Dorothy for Halloween and this was when I was still single. So I was, you know. And this was when I was still single. So I was, you know, dating around. And I may or may not have done the walk of shame in my Dorothy costume with a little Toto and one pigtail for one beautiful Sunday when everyone was out having brunch and just looked at me like,
Starting point is 00:08:39 it's like, shame on you. Why didn't you pull the other pigtail out? I don't know. i just was like trying to focus on getting home because that was all i had to wear it was clear a lot of shame
