Starting point is 00:00:00 This John O'Bien podcast, hey that's us, brought to you by HelloFresh, the experts and tastes that Kiwis love. Nicole joins us again, how you doing? I'm doing well, how are you guys? We're doing good, always like to see who you've been hanging out with over the last week. Charlie Puth in studio, I saw a good looking guy, he's got Will Ferrell. He was talking to you about how he could just call him up, he's got his number. Yeah, like what a flex, and he like threw that out, he's like actually, he a he's a good friend of mine i was like don't just like toss that piece of information away yeah i mean he's a good friend of mine um but he did get a lot of people like a lot of really big
Starting point is 00:00:34 people to make cameos in this new show that he's got and also we got a uh a little insight into taylor swift calling him out in tortureure Poets Department when she says we, you know, we declared that Charlie Puth should be in Bigger Artists. He said she never called him ahead of time. They haven't spoken since. Like she hasn't called to be like, thank you. That's so cool. She never called to ask for permission. They've just never talked. And I'm like, so you can call Will Ferrell, but like Taylor Swift shouts you out in a song and nothing? Crickets? That's weird that she wouldn't have reached out either before or after to be like, hey, I really
Starting point is 00:01:08 love you. Hope you don't mind that I'm mentioning you in my song. Right. Nothing. I feel like that's like very her style. And if she didn't, I think it's weird that like he didn't be like, hey, let me get on the phone with her. Someone get on the phone with her. And so I can say, thank you. That was really cool. I don't know. But
Starting point is 00:01:23 he kind of likes it. It's just out in the universe and that's what it is. So whatever. Given that you're in New York and you see these celebrities all the time, do you have a flex? Is there some celebrity that you can just call that you have in your phone? No. You know, I had Meghan Trainor for a second. That's awesome.
Starting point is 00:01:39 That's great. Yeah. And then like a year after, like I think she was at an award show and I was like, we were there. And I was like, I got to call her and say congratulations. And it seemed that the line was disconnected. So, I mean, that doesn't mean it was me, but like, I was like, wah, wah. So, next time you talk to her on your radio show, you'll be like, oh, your number. You didn't give me your new number, you know?
Starting point is 00:02:02 Yeah. Hook it up. Put it in. That's very cool now obviously uh the whole world uh you know seem to be talking sometimes publicly sometimes privately about the p diddy um well what's going on with puff daddy p diddy as well and it just seems to get messier and messier there's lawyers talking about other celebrities potentially getting involved but they are they may not be mentioned? I mean, listen, I think that the powers that be are going to do everything in their freaking power
Starting point is 00:02:30 not to let some of those names be released. But you never know if it goes to court, which it seems like it's going to, and goes to trial. It probably will just because it has to, like legally. But yes, I've been sitting with my friends. I've been sitting with the guys on my radio show and trying to figure out who this person is. We've talked about Ashton Kutcher. I've been sitting with the guys on my radio show and trying to figure out who this person is.
Starting point is 00:02:47 We've talked about Ashton Kutcher. We've talked about Leonardo DiCaprio. We talked about just like Usher or Justin Bieber, because we know that he was, they were both there when they were very young and super impressionable. But I mean, I think that there's names that we would never even dream of that won't necessarily come out, you know?
Starting point is 00:03:03 Because I did see the lawyer was giving them the opportunity to yes basically settle so we know that these celebrities have a huge amount of money they can settle they can put forward millions of dollars the settlement has to be agreed upon but if someone's coming to you with millions of dollars we may never know i mean the thing is like cassie sort God bless her, like, finally had the courage to come out and speak. And she might be one of the only ones that is, like, sort of set for life because they settled.
Starting point is 00:03:32 And then that opened up, like, sort of Pandora's box. And, like, now they're saying that they, in the, like, the last week, they've gotten 12,000 calls regarding people saying that they had been a victim of Diddy. So this guy is definitely not a good guy. I don't think like, where there's smoke, there's fire. I don't, I mean, listen, innocence will prove him guilty,
Starting point is 00:03:52 but I just feel like there's not that many people saying the same exact thing about you, and it's not true. That's just my opinion. But I guess just because you've gone to a party at his house or something doesn't necessarily mean you were involved in anything. I'm sure there was some parties that people went to that didn't quite end in sort of freak-offs and things like that. Well, if you believe the rumors,
Starting point is 00:04:14 the freak-off part maybe started at a certain point of the night. Right. I think like once it's like after hours or something. So there could have been people there enjoying, like you used to have these like bougie white parties, right? That's like Diddy started that whole thing. People were there, they were schmoozing, they were drinking, they were having fun.
Starting point is 00:04:30 Then they go and then the real freaks stay for the freak off. I mean. Jeez. Just talking about it, it's so wild. Yeah. And as like pop radio DJs, it's very hard to find other celebrity news right now. Well, that's what we're thinking.
Starting point is 00:04:46 That's not this. It's so annoying. And what about on your station in America and other stations? Like, has his music been taken off, or is that innocence until proven guilty, and we'll see what happens in the trial? I think we're seeing certain people. Like, I think, like, the key to – he was given, like, the key to Miami. They rescinded that since these allegations.
Starting point is 00:05:06 We don't play any Diddy because it's all current music, but I actually don't know. I need to look into it. Maybe I can find out and let you guys know next week because I wouldn't be shocked if certain stations that play on SiriusXM that play his stuff are like, maybe we should take that on rotation for a little bit. Just not a good look.
Starting point is 00:05:26 Yeah. And then coming out of the bed that he saw, that's, um, yeah, uh, some prison at the moment. Uh, yeah. I mean, I honestly, I feel terrible for his children. Like, you know, like, because then, like, I mean, even if they knew stuff, like, they probably didn't
Starting point is 00:05:42 know the extent of it and are probably like, who is this man that was our dad? You know, like, that's got to be a hard pill to swallow. We've got Nicole joining us from New York. We love catching up with Nicole every week. Now, we're messaging over social media. You were saying in response, because I've been doing these silly videos, as you know,
Starting point is 00:05:56 embarrassing my kids with a whole lot of Gen Z slang. I can't get enough. I can't get enough. And you were like, this is great. And I'm like, well, you should do it. And you said your daughter would what oh my god what did i write i don't even remember i think you said like my daughter would you said your daughter would murder me sorry she would you know why because i showed
Starting point is 00:06:16 her and i was saying this is like one of our friends from new zealand and she said to me i would murder you that was like her exact words like when I showed her and I zoomed in on the billboard, she was like, she had like, you know, when you have like secondhand embarrassment, she felt embarrassed for them. So you really killed it. I don't know if you've reached that sweet spot in your parenting life where you can just embrace the fact that you embarrass your kids and you actually enjoy it. Oh my God, there's nothing better. We were leaving to go away for the weekend and I had to pick her and my son up from school. And so we were just waiting outside
Starting point is 00:06:50 and I was honking and all the windows open and I was going, Parker, it's me, your mom. Hey, yeah, hi. She was like mortified and I loved every second of it. Okay, so we want to talk about Joker, the new movie, Folie uh joaquin phoenix lady gaga i saw it and i enjoyed it you did but i did i'm not a huge like batman fan so i wasn't expecting a huge blockbuster um but yeah i think there's a lot of talk that maybe it's going to
Starting point is 00:07:22 lose some money people walking out in movie theaters, we're hearing. It is flopping. And the thing is, Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga are both brilliant, like, just entertainers. They're brilliant, like, artists, right, in their own right. And I think that they probably are brilliant in this. And, Megan, you can, like, tell me what you thought. But, like, it doesn't mean that their brilliance, like, translated.
Starting point is 00:07:45 And I think that there was a lot of buildup. And I don't know if the musical thing was the right route to go. And that might be, that's a hard thing. I even thought with Mean Girls when they went that route, like the new amalgamation of Mean Girls being a musical. I didn't know if that would work. I don't, not everybody loves that. So I'm wondering if that's the issue.
Starting point is 00:08:03 But I mean, I don't know. And they were brilliant. No, I don't think anyone's uh disputing the fact that they were incredible in this the acting was amazing but it kind of cruised along it cruised along it definitely was not a blockbuster and uh there's not a lot of like joker action shall we say yeah like I want to see and I haven't seen yet but i plan on it but i want to see them both being like their weird selves and like taking on these characters i don't need them singing to each other like it's just like that's my that's for me and when you sell lady gaga as harley quinn i feel like you expect to see that right which we kind of didn't to be honest she's
Starting point is 00:08:40 just she dips her toe in at the end you didn didn't see the cray cray? Like you need as much as you wanted? I needed more cray cray. I got you. That's a very good way to put it. Now we have, I don't know how in touch you are with the Royals, but given that Harry and Meghan live in America, we've seen a lot of chat that they have been doing, and this has been going on for years,
Starting point is 00:09:03 so you can pour water on this fire, yeah that they've been traveling a lot separately harry's been doing a lot of engagements without megan and there are rumors that they have been spending time apart oh the cracks in the relationship you think listen i think that there's no way and i hate say it, because I kind of loved this whole story, that he was like, screw the royals. Like, I'm marrying for love. I'm not doing this. I'm not being a part of this circus anymore.
Starting point is 00:09:33 But there's no way I thought, even from the beginning, when they were so sweet, that this was going to be long-term. They come from two different worlds. And as much as they tried to make it work, a lot of things flopped, right? Like, they made deals for podcasts. They made deals with Netflix. They did all these things. And as much as they tried to make it work, like a lot of things flopped, right? Like they made deals for podcasts. They made deals with like Netflix. They did all these things and it never translated, never worked. So I could, I mean, I'm hoping for the best for them, but I would not be
Starting point is 00:09:54 shocked if this did not, if this is not like a 50 year marriage. But to be honest, so do you really want to go to your partner's work things? If you've got the option, it doesn't mean there's cracks in the relationship. It just means, hey, it's your thing. You do that. I'll stay home in my mansion in Hollywood if I was Harry, you know, or Meghan, you know? But also, like, there's two kids now as well.
Starting point is 00:10:15 Two kids at home. Maybe she doesn't want to traipse them around the world. Maybe she doesn't want to leave them with people. No, I'm sure they've got enough money. They've got the nannies. And I'm sure they don't want to make a spectacle. And when you're that famous and you've got paparazzi constantly following you, you're just asking for trouble.
Starting point is 00:10:31 And they had so much scary stuff that happened with the paparazzi when they first came out with their relationship. But they're probably traumatized. And when they show up together, it's that much more of a circus. Do you get a lot of Harry and Meghan stuff? I'm just like keen to know. Americans, they just don't care. I mean, we care, but like surface level.
Starting point is 00:10:53 Like no one's going deep like people from England are, right? Like we're not like in it. I'm not invested in it. It's fun to watch. It feels very like, is this real real life like i feel like the royals it's like i mean not to be disrespectful but like the fact that there are still royals in the world makes me laugh yeah yeah well but new zealand though we always get excited by celebrity at the moment conan o'brien the american talk show he's in the country we're getting daily updates
Starting point is 00:11:20 he's singing karaoke in small bars around you know that's news in new zealand that's big news yeah yeah conan's the best he um have you have you got a good look at that hair he is i don't know how he makes it that high apparently he's really tall a friend of mine met him briefly the other day and he's very very tall oddly tall oddly tall and actually a really nice guy behind the scenes like i thought he'd be kind of like like, obnoxious. Like, kind of, like, I don't know, give you a hard time. And kind of, like, you know, just get you a little bit. No, I know what you mean. He's really, really sweet.
Starting point is 00:11:51 I kind of got that vibe, too. It's nice to know that he's a good guy. Yeah, he's sweet. Are you a one-directioner from Wayver? I mean, we were the first people in North America to ever interview them. Oh, were you? Yeah America to ever interview them. Oh, we did. Yeah, and to play them. So we had them all when they were like little bitty babies.
Starting point is 00:12:12 So I wouldn't say I'm a One Directioner. I don't stand them. But I mean, I love them all, and we followed them, and they've all been up. We know them all individually. We know them all. I'm dying. her heart rate's increasing right now what's harry like i'm gonna get to my point in a minute but what's harry like
Starting point is 00:12:30 oh harry's the sweetest most like you want to you want to like hold him like a baby he's just like this charming little nugget and he's so sexy and he can freaking wear whatever he wants he's one of those people you're right he can put whatever on and he looks great hey he just pulls it off and then you if i went if i could end up wearing that everyone would mock me a reed sequin jumpsuit i would mock you you're right harry does it it's amazing yeah like he if my husband ever wore what he wore to the last live event i did with him i'd be like like, nah. But with Harry, it works. So my question is, there's a lot of chat, and this has come from social media, where Liam Payne's ex has been exposing secrets of the band.
Starting point is 00:13:15 So Liam obviously won of One Direction, if you're not a 1D fan, and what? So what's she's exposing? So Liam has said in the past that there was someone from One Direction that held him up against a wall. And she has said that person was Zayn Malik. So she's exposing some of the secrets from the band when they were together. Plus saying Liam Payne was not a good guy to her.
Starting point is 00:13:36 And I don't know if that's going to cause more drama. I mean, listen, I'm sure it is. I'm sure he'll deny, deny, deny. But I'm sure she knows a lot about the skeletons. And I mean, it tracks timeline wise because they were together when he was going through his like addiction issues, right? So I'm sure he wasn't completely being himself. I'm sure that he was struggling.
Starting point is 00:13:55 And maybe, you know, we don't act like ourselves when we're in. If you're like an addict and deep in the throes of that, you might get violent. You might not act like yourself. You might do and say things that you wish you didn't. So there's something about it that I'm like a kind of believer. I don't want to. Obviously put together by Simon Cowell, very successful. We're actually talking about Simon Cowell on our show because David Williams, he's a
Starting point is 00:14:19 UK comedian, writes books. He was on a talent show with Simon Cowell and he told a great story about the fact that Simon would turn up. Well, three hours later, they'd get a call. After call time, the audience was waiting. Simon was still in bed. Four hours later, Simon was in the bath. Five hours, he'd eventually turn up, have a cigarette and an IV drip, and eventually get on stage, and they'd rather be waiting five, six hours.
Starting point is 00:14:40 Have you dealt with Simon Cowell? Have you had any dealings at all? Oh, yeah yeah around then yeah so we're just trying i'm so sorry i'm so sorry that's all right i thought you're like yeah like i was telling a little story and you're like yeah cool story and you're like you're left no i was like was it a shit story no that's right yeah something's wrong with my computer so i have no video but um let's just finish that so basically i was telling a long-winded story about simon cowell but it's all right and and it ended uh with, have you had any dealings with Simon Cowell,
Starting point is 00:15:08 yeah, over your time? Oh, gosh. I think he might have been up once. We had Randy Jackson. We had Paula Dulick when Idol was like, American Idol at least, was new. But he kind of stayed in the background. Like, he didn't like to do a lot of the press because he was too busy,
Starting point is 00:15:25 like bragging that he had put them all together. Right. Yeah. Or he's, um, he's not a very punctual man. Yeah. Not very, we've got a great story about how he kept everyone waiting to sort of five, six hours every time they were filming in the UK. Yeah. I mean, we've done that before. I've had it with multiple celebrities. I've had a boss that made me stay. I've just upped and left when I'm like,
Starting point is 00:15:50 I mean, like, it's just disrespectful. Like, my thing is I always, when we have a celebrity that's coming, you would never be late for live television. So please don't be late for my live radio show. Yeah, right. I mean, and yeah, I mean, we had, Christina Aguilera was super late.
Starting point is 00:16:03 Justin Timberlake was super late. Mariah Carey left us waiting for four hours. It's rough. And it's like, this is a transactional relationship. I want you on my show and you want to promote yourself. So please be, you know, polite. Yeah, just because we don't have visuals, we're still live. It's very roach.
Starting point is 00:16:21 Yeah. Yeah. We understand. Oh, and Nicole, thank you so much for your time as always. It's always great to catch up with you and we'll do it all again next week. Yes, absolutely, guys. Have a good one.
