The Hits with the Jono and Ben podcast. Thanks to Challenge, putting the service back into service stations.
Superbowl's on today and we cross now to a Kiwi who's going to be there. He's part of the action right now. Ben, good morning.
Hi guys, how are ya?
Here we are, live in Vegas.
That's me, here I am in Vegas.
What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas normally, so can we talk about the Superbowl?
Yes, I've gotten permission from the head of Las Vegas and I
can talk to you.
Now, explain what
you're watching right now. It must be
mayhem in the city. I've got a sea
of red because both teams wear red
jerseys. So, just
non-stop red merchandise. Lots
of security. There's a hotel that's normally
an Egyptian pyramid that looks like a
giant Dorito at the moment. It's a hotel that's normally an Egyptian pyramid that looks like a giant Dorito at the moment.
It's just non-stop
madness, to be perfectly honest with you.
We've seen stuff on Instagram, the gridlocked
traffic. Oh yeah, last night
was just complete madness. Not only
on the roads, if you're taking
an Uber somewhere, but also in the casinos.
It was almost just gridlock of just
everybody just out to all different
parties, or just going from one casino to the other. I've been to Vegas casinos. It was almost just gridlock of just everybody just out to all different parties or
just going from one casino to the other. I've been to Vegas a few times for different events,
and it's nothing like what has been happening this week. Wow, sounds wild. Taylor Swift,
do we know, has she made it? Is she going to make it? Okay, so one of my other views,
I can see the private jet airport that's just across the street here. There's over a thousand
different private jets that are going to be parked there today.
Taylor landed in LA yesterday.
Some rumors that she might have snuck into Vegas last night.
Others say that she spent the night at her place in LA.
She's going to fly in today.
But we haven't got confirmation just yet.
I can't see any private jets in the sky just yet.
We're quite disturbing that we're doing a report on the Super Bowl,
and the thing we're leading with is, has Taylor Swift arrived?
Yeah.
That's all I care about.
She must have made a monumental difference to coverage
outside of normal football fans.
Oh, yeah.
The Super Bowl is normally a pop culture event,
but this is just to another level.
The amount of young women, young girls that are with their mum and dad
or they're with their girlfriends and they've got Swisher team jerseys on
that just might not even be going to the game,
but are just here to enjoy it.
It's brought in a completely different audience
and everybody is just loving it,
especially people that are placing bets on how many times
she's going to be shown in the coverage today.
Do you feel a little bit for Usher?
I mean, Usher, a huge international superstar
playing halftime, but he's sort of
the attention's been given to another music star.
Yeah, a tiny bit, I do.
Like, when they announced it, I was like,
Usher, that'll be fun.
And then it's like, lol, jokes, Taylor's dating her.
Her play is going to be at the Super Bowl.
It's like, oh.
But Usher does have, like, a bunch of different
collaborators that he's going to bring out.
Like, Bieber's in town, so they're thinking
that Bieber might come out.
Alicia Keys is locked in, little John maybe.
So hopefully he gets that 15 minutes where everybody is actually watching him,
and then we can go back to turning our heads and looking into the sleep.
Are you going to the game?
Yes, I am.
I'm about to walk into the tailgate, and then I'll go into the game.
So I'm really pumped.
So the tailgate, they all just preload, don't they, in the car park?
Yeah, pretty much.
It's just everybody just having a great time in the car park.
Although it's a bit more official.
I think Gwen Stefani is playing at this tailgate.
So I don't know how they roped her in to just a tailgate in the car park.
Hardworking busking musician, Gwen Stefani.
Yeah, that's right.
You just could not trust a New zealand crowd to tailgate could
you sensibly we couldn't be trusted just to it's in a car park drinking out of our cars no they
just wouldn't let you just be if there's the moment that one person suggests that you're going
to do it you know the first person that yells out up the wars you feel like okay please take him
away we don't want to be proud we can't trust these guys. Now, I know the New Zealand dollar, not that great
at the best of times, but what does it cost
for like a hot dog or a beer or
something in the game? What are you expecting?
Okay, so it's going to be about
like, just for a beer,
upwards of like from $15 to
$25 American. Hot dogs
are going to be super expensive. They say
it's going to be like over 100,000 beers
and 16,000 hot dogs are going to be consumed expensive. They say there's going to be over 100,000 beers and 16,000 hot dogs are going to be consumed
just in the stadium.
So $15 to $25, to put that in perspective,
about $900 New Zealand, is it?
Yeah, I think that's what it looks like.
That's $40 for a beer.
That's exactly right.
That is incredible.
And are you going to be staying on afterwards?
Yeah, well, the good thing is because of the time zones,
the kickoff is going to be like 3 o'clock in the afternoon,
so I can go all night.
It's going to be great.
But the thing is, my friends have tickets to one of the team's after parties,
and we're discussing, like, we kind of feel obligated to go
because we got a ticket, but what happens if they lose?
It's going to be almost like a wake.
Like, no one's going to want to go to this after party if they lose, right?
Wait, which team, say the Chiefs?
No, the 49ers.
Unfortunately, I don't have Chiefs tickets as The 49ers. No, the 49ers. Unfortunately,
I don't have Chiefs tickets as much as I'd love to sneak in there.
Ben, if you don't mind me asking, what do you do?
How have
you got these tickets? How have you got into the Super Bowl?
Okay, I'm not going to lie. I work
for a radio station here in the States, and
this is going to sound absolutely ridiculous,
but one of the owners of an NFL team
listens to my radio show.
And so I've got to tell you, I called in so many favors
to try and get these tickets and magically got a face value ticket.
I didn't have to pay $11,000, so I'm very grateful.
Wow.
So, geez, you pulled a big favor there.
That's incredible.
I can't ask anything ever again.
I've pulled in the one big favor, and that's it.
Well, could you do us a favor?
Could you send us a video of you at the Super Bowl saying,
from Jono and Ben, up the waz.
Oh, yeah.
Can you chuck out an up the waz?
Oh, I have to get everybody up to speed because the NRL is coming here in Vegas
in, like, what, three weeks or something.
There's no Warriors there, but, like, I have to try and get everybody on side,
don't I?
Oh, Ben, enjoy the game.
It's been so good talking to you.
We really appreciate your time.
And maybe we can call you tomorrow and find out how the after party was.
