Jono, Ben & Megan - The Podcast - March 09 - A Harry & Meghan BONANZA
Episode Date: March 9, 2021Golly gosh, it seems right now the only thing in the news is Harry & Meghan's tell all interview with Oprah. And they spilt the TEA! Our royal-obsessed producer Juliet gave us the rundown with the bes...t moments. We also caught up with UK journalist Gavin Grey, who gave his thoughts (very strong thoughts!) on the interview. We then asked you guys if you're team Meg & Haz, or team Royal... SO MUCH DIVISION! Other than royal chat, Ben came home with potentially the world's most annoying dog toy without even realising it. You think the sound of bagpipes or a child screaming is bad, wait until you hear this. Finally, Jono shared why he reckons he's the biggest idiot of them all, and the reason is valid! Jono and Ben, new to your mornings.
Friends of Skinny, New Zealand's most recommended telco.
Happy, happy, happy, oh, oh.
Just when you thought you couldn't get enough of Jono and Ben,
you can have them anywhere, anytime.
Welcome to the Jono and Ben podcast.
Hey, Tuesday the 9th of March 2021, the world's recovering.
It seems like a Megan and Harry hangover.
And everyone's talking about the night before.
Oh my God, you hear what Megan did. Yeah, I know. It's not one Megan and Harry hangover. And everyone's talking about the night before. Oh my god you hear what Megan did.
It's not one of those isn't it? It is.
Yeah you're right. It's like the work party
went on last night and everyone's in the office cosplaying
the next day. It's that same feeling.
Everyone's talking about it. Did you hear what Megan said
about her family?
I don't know why I sounded like $20
Karen. He does.
You'll get your $20.
You'll get $20 Karen. It does. You'll get your $20. You'll get 20 effing whacks.
I was the same as you.
Like a couple of days ago, I was kind of like,
why are they doing this?
Particularly when they were going to the United States for privacy.
But then having watched what I've seen of it so far,
I kind of go, well, at least they've put their story out there now
and I feel sorry for them. It'll be interesting because you do. You feel sorry for them. I haven seen of it so far, I kind of go, well, at least they put their story out there now and I feel sorry for them.
It'll be interesting because you do.
You feel sorry for them.
I haven't seen it yet.
I'm really in two camps, mainly because none of us, no commentators, no body language experts,
no reporters, no radio hosts were there.
Yeah, that's true.
We don't know what's going on.
No one commenting on social media.
No one actually knows and in
disagreements there's always both
sides you find have points.
Yeah, that's true. Yeah, you're right.
I totally agree with you.
Shit, that was sensible. No, I agree. There's
probably points that we were maybe in
the wrong and the others in the wrong but I still feel
sorry for them. I don't think that'll change.
But then you also feel sorry for the raw thing.
Oh, absolutely. Well, this is the way we run it.
Especially now, because it's all their
dirty laundries all over the world, you know?
So yeah, I do feel it's just a horrible
situation all round. Listen, we speak
to, geez, comprehensive rolling
coverage of the interview this morning. Gee whiz,
I tell you what, Blober, it was like almost
ESPN-like, wasn't it?
We spoke to
a royal reporter who is
vehemently in the camp
of the royals. Like, thinks
that it was a self-serving
self-righteous
interview. They wanted their
private life, then why aren't they being private?
Had some very good arguments. Very good arguments.
Like, really, really good arguments. No matter which way you
feel. I was out of it going, well,
he's passionate about it. He makes some great points. That makes you go, oh good arguments. No matter which way you feel. I was out of it going, well, he's passionate about it.
He makes some great points.
That makes you go, oh, okay.
But that is the difference, too, between Americans and British.
British are like shut up, stiff upper lip, very stoic, aren't they?
Suppress all emotions.
Much like New Zealanders.
We like to suppress emotions.
Yeah, yeah.
We're getting better at it, though.
But Americans are kind of the opposite.
Very good communicators.
Anyone you want to run into in America,
you're like,
why aren't you on television?
You're a superstar.
He's like, well, I'm a plumber.
You know?
But I'm very good at,
yeah, you're right.
America's all about the,
it seems to be about the showmanship and being able to talk
and you have to sell yourself
and all that sort of stuff.
It's the opposite for the British.
Maybe it's a clash of cultures.
Who knows?
But you'll hear about that
coming up in the podcast.
What else do we have?
I'm trying to think.
Do we do anything non-royal today?
Yeah, we did a few other things, but that escapes me as well.
You came crashing back down to earth with our game, five words for $5,000.
Jeez, hot off a five out of five win.
I don't think we've ever had a result like today.
No, it was probably the worst
attempt ever. Like, we haven't. No, we haven't.
No, this is the first. Yeah, like the Warriors.
One week they're winning. Next week,
none. The games you thought they were going to win,
they don't win. But anyway, today, yeah, we've
never had a result like this today, so check it
out. It's very enjoyable on the podcast.
Two dads just trying to fill
some airtime. Some may say it's pointless, but
the main thing is it fills in some airtime for us.
That is the main thing.
Jono and Ben, breakfast on the hits.
Now, last night, New Zealand Time, Oprah's interview with Meghan and Harry went out in America and around the world.
It's played tonight, if you want to catch it, on TV3 at 7.30, right?
Yes.
Now, one lady who has been frothing over this
for the past three weeks leading into it.
A lot of froth.
We were almost like, does she need a rabies shot?
So much froth.
But producer Juliet, you're a huge royalist.
Yes.
Was this interview everything you had imagined?
It was because the royal family are very,
you know, they keep to themselves traditionally quite a lot.
So for something like this to come out is a big deal
and for many royalists is like,
because you don't really hear about the inside
and what goes on behind the scenes.
So this is a very big deal and very exciting
for this all to be released.
I couldn't figure out why Harry was on the sidelines
for the majority of the interview.
He kind of came on as an impact player later on in the game,
didn't he?
Why was that?
I'm not entirely sure.
I think maybe Megan, whether it was her decision or his decision or Oprah's decision,
to speak on her own initially.
But then when Harry came in, he came and backed up pretty much a lot of things
that Megan had told Oprah one-on-one.
So Megan, yeah, so not too sure why.
But there are a lot of good moments.
One of the first things they touched on in the interview
was reports that Kate had made, no, sorry,
Megan had made Kate cry.
So this was in the media that this had happened, right?
Yeah, it had been published everywhere.
It was a little bit after their wedding,
Harry and Megan's wedding.
But in fact, it was actually Kate that made Megan cry.
And the issue was about flower girl dresses.
Very, very tense.
That's a crying issue.
I imagine a lot of weddings, that's just the thing that happens.
Everyone cries at weddings.
But you're just stressed about the things that don't, in hindsight, don't matter.
But people like placemats and play things and all that, you know.
100%.
It was probably quite tense, the situation.
Yes.
And everyone's running and basically race cars in the red, aren't they?
Especially at any wedding, but a royal wedding.
A lot more acid on that.
And so Kate did apologise to Megan after Megan cried.
Sent her flowers or something.
Sent her flowers, gave her a note, did the right thing and Megan accepted it.
But the issue was this.
What was hard to get over was being blamed for something that not only I didn't do
but that happened to me
and the people who were part of our wedding going to our comms team and saying, I know
this didn't happen.
And they were all told to say all the time the stories out there you'd made Kate cry.
People around you knew that that wasn't true.
Everyone in the institution knew it wasn't.
So why didn't somebody just say that?
It's a good question.
They were willing to lie to protect other members of the family, but they weren't willing to tell the truth to protect me and my husband.
That's very interesting.
Isn't that interesting?
I remember reading that story, and that gives you a, you know,
maybe like forms your perception of Meghan, you know?
Yes, yeah.
When in her opinion, it was totally false.
I know, I know.
And then as a whole, ultimately the main reason they left the royal family
was because there was a lack of support and understanding from the family
for Meghan and Harry when Meghan needed help.
And so Meghan battled with her mental health quite a lot
with the reports that came out and the fact that the family
seemingly had quite a bit of control over sort of what went on in their life.
Like Meghan wasn't allowed to leave her cottage for two months,
I think, at a time.
And so she felt kind of trapped trapped really struggled with her mental health. These are the
thoughts that I'm having in the middle of the night that are very clear and I'm scared because
this is very real. They said my heart goes out to you because I see how bad it is but there's nothing
we can do to protect you because you're not a paid employee of the institution. So to receive no help at all and to be told continuously,
this is how it is, this is just how it is,
we've all been through it.
We had to find a solution.
Isn't that interesting?
So she had some dark thoughts there.
Yeah, she really struggled with her mental health
and she asked the institutional firm,
which they call it, for help,
but they just kind of said, that's how it is,
we've all been through it.
We can't really help you.
And so that was probably the main reason that they left the family.
They say it wasn't calculated.
It wasn't planned.
I mean, some people will argue that, you know, she's an actress.
She left her family and she left the royal family.
It was all part of the plan.
But I think that she didn't realise the actual true effect
of what being in the family would be like.
So going into this,
were you on the side of the Royals or Meghan and Harry?
And what side are you on now, Producer Juliet?
Okay, the side, I've never been one of those,
I don't like Meghan, I like Kate,
or I, you know, the other way around.
I've always been pretty like, yeah, welcoming them all,
you know, love the Royals as a whole.
Definitely, I think on Meghan and Harry's side on this one. I think
the royal family is very old
school, traditional, and they haven't really changed
with the times that they probably need to.
And, yeah,
that's kind of my thoughts. They also
mentioned that they were going to move to New Zealand, which I
obviously... I know everyone got quite excited about that.
New Zealand, we
wouldn't be able to handle it. We would
combust. But then at the same time,
we're quite chill as well.
Or like maybe I'm not.
We couldn't move here
mainly because of you,
Juliet.
True.
Experts in semi-accurate,
half-remembered information.
Vaguely known information,
but maybe not correct.
Jono and Ben,
New Zealand's breakfast
on the hits.
Now last night,
Oprah's interview
with Harry and Meghan
went global
and it seems like it's all the world is talking about,
particularly here in New Zealand, where we got name-checked.
We love that here in New Zealand.
So we weren't reinventing the wheel here.
We were saying, okay, if this isn't working for everyone,
we're in a lot of pain.
You can't provide us with the help that we need.
We can just take a step back.
We can do it in a Commonwealth country.
We had suggested New Zealand, South Africa.
Take a breath. Canada.
My biggest concern was history repeating itself.
An interview that a lot
of, you know, it seems like a lot of
sympathy towards Megan
and Harry and their situation here in New
Zealand. That seems to be the general consensus,
but we wanted to know what was going on in the UK
because obviously the Royals
are, for many people in the UK,
you know, they're royalists.
They're huge, the royal family over there, right?
Yeah, they are.
And we're joined now by our UK correspondent.
I say that because it makes the show sound far more sophisticated
than it actually is.
We'll cross live now to our UK correspondent, Gavin Gray.
Come on in.
Yeah, I don't know what time it is over there.
Good morning from us here.
Good morning, Ben. Morning, Jono. Yes, good afternoon. Here it is. Yeah, I don't know what time it is over there. Good morning from us here. Good morning, Ben.
Morning, Jono.
Yes, good afternoon.
Here it is.
Oh, good afternoon.
How can it be afternoon there but morning here?
That blows my marbles.
Gavin, what is the UK's reaction to this interview?
Because over here we are frothing for it.
Well, yeah.
I mean, I think it really has further polarized people's opinion about Harry and Meghan.
I think looking at the support she's getting, a lot of that is coming from America or Americans.
A lot of Britons saying, look, you two wanted privacy.
Why didn't you keep your mouth shut, frankly, and disappear?
We've had enough, you know, please, more than enough.
But there's no doubt that this
interview has really stirred things up. And when I first saw it, I thought, well, actually, it's
not as bad as I thought, because I had feared they would name individual family members who
were racist. But of course, then I thought, well, actually, by not naming them, it kind of leads to
a witch hunt, because we all need to know, we all want to know who
was the person who asked about the skin color of the baby, you know, and in what way was
it done?
Was it done in a very racist, hostile way?
Or was it almost asking, you know, I wonder if the baby will have ginger hair kind of
way?
In which case, lots of people would say, well, that isn't racist.
So the people who disagreed with Meghan and Harry leading into this interview,
they will still disagree with them now,
or do you think they might have turned a few people?
I'm not so sure about that.
I think one or two.
I mean, look, when somebody says that they felt suicidal,
your heart goes out to them, whoever they are.
But there are some things which don't quite add up,
or at least I can't understand.
She said she was stopped from getting any help. Well, I can't understand that at all. I mean,
Harry has been patron of a number of mental health charities. He knew people who worked with
mental health and with people who were in distress. He could have put a call in, surely. I
can't believe that that wouldn't have happened.
And also, I really don't think they would have been barred from doing so.
I have to say, a lot of what came over, I'm afraid, was really just very, very sanctimonious.
It was also self-serving.
When they talked about how tough it had been, you know, I'm sorry, and like being in lockdown,
tough is living in a one-bed apartment at the top of a sorry, and like being in lockdown, Tuff is living in a one-bed
apartment at the top of a tower block
in central London in lockdown,
with kids running around screaming,
forgive me, they're in a 20 million New Zealand
dollar mansion
in California. And Harry talks
about how his father had cut him off
from money. Forgive me, his mother
left him tens of millions
of New Zealand dollars in cash.
They are hardly strapped for cash. Thank you for translating it to New Zealand dollars as well.
Yeah, I appreciate it. Interesting your perspective on this, Gavin. Do you think the
royals will respond now that this has come out? Well, I did think, I mean, right the way along,
this has been a stay calm, keep calm, carry on and say nothing kind of thing. And that has always been the Queen's mantra.
Never complain, never explain.
And when you actually look at Kate Middleton, so the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William,
that has pretty much been their mantra as well.
And it has been Prince Charles'.
The opposite is really true of Harry and Meghan.
And they really, I think, have painted the
UK, frankly, as a whole load of racists and America, a whole load of wonderful, homogenized
people who who never have an argument. Well, again, we just know that that is not right.
I'm also really don't understand it. What is it? What is an authentic lifestyle? What can anybody explain? I want to be authentic. I really don't understand this. What is an authentic lifestyle? What? Can anybody explain? I want
to be authentic. I really don't understand what that means.
Well, listen, I tell you what, I'm certainly not leading an authentic lifestyle. I've been
trying for many years, Gavin. I find it so funny that it's a family, essentially, but
it's also a business. You know, the lines can get blurred between the two.
Yeah, except I think what Harry's done is
he's blown up the family. And I
don't know about you, but I just
don't think
you do that to your family, even if you don't get
on with them. I think at the heart of it, though, here,
you're right, it's a family, and yet it is a
business. They call themselves, jokingly,
the firm. But I
really feel very sorry now. I think Harry
has widened the gap between he and Prince
William massively. I think he'll have upset Prince William enormously over those things that Meghan
said about Kate and the crying before the wedding. And I think as well that, you know,
Prince Charles has come out of this very badly. And for that, he won't be thanking his son.
One other side point, that is,
they are now saying that Harry and Meghan are saying they would very much like Archie to become
a prince, because that means he would be entitled to security. At the moment, he isn't entitled to
become a prince, but Prince Charles, on accession to the throne, could actually give him that title.
Well, if Harry was my son, I'm not sure I would give his son the title of Prince after
what he said.
Oh, Gavin Gray, thank you so much for your time.
A very interesting perspective that you've offered us this morning, so we really do appreciate
it.
Cheers, guys.
From stealing Mike Hosking's car to stealing the hearts of New Zealand.
Jono and Ben, New Zealand's breakfast on the hits.
Actual hearts being not bestowed.
Yesterday, Megan and Harry spilled the tea,
the royal tea on Oprah Winfrey,
the interview that the whole world is talking about today.
And producer Juliette,
you have written a spreadsheet with notes
of times where things were said.
Gosh, you must have been a nerd at school.
I actually was, yeah.
It's quite embarrassing.
She's got a 29-page document with time codes of certain moments in the interview,
lines that were said.
It's great, though.
It's great.
So no one knows more about this interview than you.
Not even Oprah.
She would have forgotten.
Oprah, that was at 30 minutes, 49 seconds when you asked that question about his father.
So some of the things that everyone needs to know, whether you've seen it or not,
what would you like to bring up now?
So something that was quite interesting to hear about, it was quite early on in the interview, was that Harry and Meghan, obviously they got married on May 19th, 2019, I think it was.
Don't pretend like you don't know.
This is coming off the top of your dome.
And they, in fact, actually got married three days before in private.
Three days before our wedding, we got married.
No one knows that, but we called the Archbishop
and we just said, look, this thing,
this spectacle is for the world,
but we want our union between us.
So like the vows that we have framed in our room
are just the two of us in our backyard.
I love the music behind that one.
It's like an episode of The Bachelor, isn't it?
It is.
Very surprising details.
They're having a girl as well.
Having a baby girl, which is very exciting.
A boy and a girl.
And I think the whole premise of the interview is
you realise the reason they left the royal family
and the reason they left was because of the lack of support
and understanding when Megan needed help.
Because when she kind of asked for help,
she didn't receive it in perhaps the way that she wanted to.
And I think there's a lot of, you know, in the royal family,
they look all perfect and they look all, you know, happy families.
And I think that's because there's a lot of probably inside control
that goes on.
A bit of pent-up frustration.
Yeah.
Like a marriage at the end of a tether.
Yes.
And I think there's so much
control because the family
don't want to be seen sort of in a negative
light and Harry addresses this.
But I also am acutely
aware of where my family
stand and how scared they are
of the tabloids turning on them.
There is a level of control
by fear that has existed
for generations.
The institution survives based on that perception.
Because what the press publishes, the public reads.
And, of course, if that's negative, then...
True.
And I've also found it interesting, he's tried to call his dad,
but Charles won't return his calls.
I think they're okay now, but for a while it was quite,
yeah, the relationship was not good.
It's like he's in his 70s.
He probably doesn't know how to return a call.
And he probably did and left you a voicemail.
Check your voicemail, mate.
Yeah, stating the date and time at the beginning of the message too.
But stuff that Megan talked about that a lot of people talk about today,
so the mental lows that she had over all this that was going on,
living in this royal family under this sort of structure
and obviously dealing with the media.
You feel really sorry.
Well, I did in particular.
I felt really sorry for her.
You do.
And she said that at times she didn't want to be left alone
because she was scared of what she might do to herself.
Like she had to go to engagements with Harry,
had to be with him all the time.
Yes, she had to wipe away her tears,
put on makeup and front to the media and look happy.
But behind the scenes, she was really struggling.
And that with the lack of the help was the reason they left.
And now they're in California in a lovely mansion, which people like to point out.
But the thing is, you might have all the money and the fame in the world, but if your mental health's not right, then...
That's right.
And it's easy to go, they're rich. They don't have a care in the world. But they do. These people do have cares in the world, but if your mental health's not right, then, you know. That's right. And it's easy to go, they're rich, they don't have a care in the world.
But they do.
These people do have cares in the world.
And we spoke to a UK royal reporter before 8 o'clock.
Now, a lot of people sympathising with Meghan and Harry.
Ben, you thought that was the popular opinion.
Well, not, according to Gavin Gray in the UK.
When they talked about how tough it had been, you know, I'm sorry,
and like being in lockdown,
tough is living in a one-bed apartment at the top of a tower block in central London in lockdown
with kids running around screaming,
forgive me, they're in a 20 million New Zealand dollar mansion in California.
And Harry talks about how his father had cut him off from money.
Forgive me, his mother left him tens of millions
of New Zealand dollars in cash.
That's Gavin Gray,
who we spoke to before 8 o'clock.
I feel like Gavin's...
Interesting points.
He is.
And he's far too good for this show.
He's on another level.
But what we wanted to throw open,
after what you've seen or consumed on social media
or heard on the radio so far,
from both sides,
what team are you on?
Team Megan and Harry or Team Royal? Jude?
I am Team Megan and Harry. I saw
this on Twitter and I thought it was very
interesting. The Royal family
announcing investigations into Megan's behaviour
and bullying claims and not Prince
Andrew's affiliation with Jeffrey Epstein
is all you need to know about this organisation.
Boom! Mic drop!
Do you share the same opinion?
Are you Team Megan and Harry or are you team Royals?
Where are you, Ben?
I've lost sympathy for Megan and Harry after watching that interview.
We'll go to the phones.
Fiona, you're on from Auckland.
Sorry, more dinner.
How are you?
More dinner.
I'm good, thank you.
How are you?
Yeah, good.
I detect an accent.
Yes, I'm British.
And your thoughts?
I've been living here for 12 years.
I'm team Royal all the way.
She knew what she was getting into.
She claimed that she didn't.
But if you look back through
her history, her friends
that she's now disowned
said that she wanted to be a princess.
She was obsessed with Princess Diana.
Her saying that she didn't know who Harry was.
That's a crap.
He was the most eligible bachelor going.
She knew exactly what she was getting into
and she didn't like having to conform.
So you think she's been playing the game.
Now, someone raised a point.
She's estranged from her family now,
estranged from her friends,
now estranged from the royal...
Where were all her friends and family at the wedding?
It was all celebrities.
Oh, but to be honest, though,
if I could invite celebrities
over people like Jono, I would.
If I could hang out with
Idris Elba and... George Clooney.
I would. I mean, we all want George
Clooney, don't we? I think George Clooney
was like, I've never even met her, but I'll turn
up anyway. I like asparagus rolls.
Hey Fiona, well listen,
you're very passionate and do you think that would be
the general consensus of
people in the UK?
I would say probably about 80%. I'm not
saying that what she's gone through
I mean it must be hard
being in the limelight
and having people surrounding you
all the time but that's part and parcel of being
a member of the royal family.
Everybody wants to see them everybody wants to
know what they're doing i mean look when they came here you know the crowds that they pulled
that's what they pull in the uk as well that's what they pull around the world everybody sees
it on the news so for her to say that she didn't know what she was getting herself into i just find
that one really really hard to believe and from all all my family and friends that are back in the UK,
they're all Team Royal as well.
You know, it's what the Queen does,
not only for Britain, but for the Commonwealth.
She's a fabulous woman.
She really is.
God bless the Queen.
That's what we say, isn't it, right now?
God bless the Queen.
Hey, good on you, Fiona.
Thank you for your call.
And a really interesting point.
It's the one thing that I just can't get over
is the, we want a private life,
but then go and dredge all this stuff up,
you know, two years down the track.
And I, hey, I'm not in her shoes
where the media is constantly writing
speculative articles about her.
So I don't know how I would react in that situation,
but that doesn't sit quite easy with me, you know?
Yeah, I was definitely thinking that going into it,
but now that I've watched, well, what I've seen of it,
I kind of think, well, now they've said what they wanted to say
and you kind of get their point,
and now they can probably go do their private thing.
Because up until then, now I'm like, oh, yes, there was a lot going on.
I can see why you've done this.
Yeah, Sally's on from Christchurch.
How are you, Sal?
Good morning.
Bloody good to have you on Mustang, Sally.
You tell us, you tell us, Team Megan and Harry or Team Royal?
I'm definitely Team Megan and Harry.
What in particular?
I just think that it's about time.
I just think the Royals are definitely living in the dark ages now
and I think it's time to update a little bit
and just get back into what we're living
now and today's ideals.
Yeah, get an Instagram account.
Jump on TikTok. Yeah.
Get the Queen on TikTok. I want to see the Queen on Instagram.
She was on Zoom the other day, the Queen.
She's going to be on TikTok next week.
Good on you, Sally. Really appreciate that.
Well, tonight, if you want to watch it all for yourself,
it's on TV3.
Yeah, 3. They've got a 7 o'clock today.
The time you finish watching that, it'll be the next day.
It's a marathon effort.
Ben's like the length of the interview daunting.
It gives him anxiety.
But I've heard Patricia Juliet has all the best bits,
so we'll be talking through those this morning.
And we'll continue to do so.
For the next 12 months.
Ben and Jono call this show Jono and Ben. Breakfast
on the Heads.
Jono, I've spoken many times on the
radio about our dog,
Bo. We've got a big, white, fluffy dog
called Bo. Big, white, fluffy
Samoyed. It's a lot of fluff.
That must really moult in the house,
does it? You come in covered
in white hair. Yeah, all through.
It's through your bag. It's amazing the places
that the white fur
does end up with.
It's like you've been
living with Santa Claus
and rolling around
with Santa Claus.
I mean, I love Bo.
He's a shambles of a dog
at the best of times.
He's got a lot of fur
and one of the tricks
he loves to do
at the moment is to
because he knows
how big he is.
So if you go,
hey, Bo,
you need to go outside
and he doesn't want
to go outside.
He just lies down.
I'm like, oh, well played because I can't
Can you pick him up, literally?
I can pick him up if he's standing up, but from a
like, for me, from a squat
position to, you know, I'm like, yeah.
The dog to body, to human body
ratio is off. It's off kilter.
It's basically like
a pack and save stick man buying a horse.
So I love
the dog, Bo. Yesterday we were in the pet store.
We went down to get some pet food and the kids were like,
they just grabbed this toy and they're like,
how can we get a toy for bone?
You know, when you're at the counter and kids are grabbing stuff,
you're like, oh yeah, yeah, yeah, sweet, chuck it in.
It was like a sort of rubber looking sort of chicken thing.
And I was like, yeah, sweet, chuck it on, it'll be fine.
Give the dog, you know, something fun.
And I didn't realise until I got home, we gave it to the dog,
that when the dog bit into it, it made this noise.
Oh, no.
So this is yesterday.
When you played this before,
I thought your high-fibre diet was playing up again.
So all last night as the dog would chew,
and it was a chew toy, it was just like constantly like, yeah!
And you're like,
oh my God.
It's the most...
Does the novelty wear off
with toys and Bo?
Because I know he's...
You can give a dog anything.
He, in the past,
has stolen the underwear off
the neighbour's washing line,
which you are still vehemently back
that it was the dog.
But I'll just play with it.
Does he get over stuff?
Will he bury it?
I could imagine that...
Yeah, I was waiting for him
to get sick of it
because they talk about dogs not liking high-pitched noises.
I mean, you want to hear that noise again.
I mean, that's...
Ooh, that must be testing you.
Yeah, but he was quite enjoying just sort of chewing away on this noise
and you're like, oh, we found one thing more annoying
than listening to Jono and Ben, I think.
It's this toy.
Want more Jono and Ben?
You can catch up with the boys anytime. Just search Jono and Ben? You can catch up with the boys anytime.
Just search Jono and Ben on Instagram.
Now, 7.45, you know what that means?
Five words for 5K on the hood.
You're only five words away from a massive payday.
And it can be done.
Our Game of Word Association,
five grand on the line each day at this time.
Yesterday, oh, absolute scenes as Jono Pryor won the money for Mel.
Jono Pryor, the final word today in five words for 5K is...
Purple.
There's one that's just floating around in my head.
It's a Prince song.
Purple Rain.
So what? Mel,. Purple Rain. Show!
What?
Mel!
Mel!
Oh, it was so good yesterday.
That is our fourth winner on Five Words for 5K,
so it can be done.
20 grand given away so far,
and surprisingly, we're still playing this game.
Oh, two from two in the winning stakes.
We've got two stakes each on our plate,
and there's a lot of steak to consume.
We're going to bring in Abby from Christchurch.
Mordena, welcome to New Zealand's Breakfast.
Abby.
Mordena.
How are you, matey?
I'm good, thank you.
How are you?
I'm doing well.
How's the commute in Christchurch this morning?
Backed up?
Oh, no, not really.
It's a bit chilly, though.
Oh, there we go.
That was a very vague traffic report from Christchurch.
Traffic's okay, but it's a little bit
chilly. Abby, $5,000.
How would this change your life?
Oh, it would be amazing. I have
two young children and
we would go probably on a holiday
around New Zealand somewhere.
And you can probably hear them in the background.
Where do the kids want to go?
Where do you want to go, Brooklyn?
You want to go to preschool.
Well, that's not really a holiday.
Well, that's a cheap holiday.
That's a good holiday.
Preschool is a lot of fun.
All right, Abby, you've got to choose one of us to go in the soundproof booth.
Are you going to take Jono on a hot streak or Ben on a cold streak?
Who are you going to take?
I think I'll go with Jono because of yesterday.
Yeah, of course not.
See how I swayed the witness?
We both don't like going into the soundproof booth
only because we feel bad when we let people down.
Yeah, I know.
So we genuinely try our best in this competition
because we want to give away money.
But we are shallow radio announcers
who don't like offending anyone, really,
at the end of the day, do we?
No, Jono's making his way over to the corner of the studio
as he does to get in the soundproof booth.
I've been sent through the words from producer Ben B. Humps,
and Abby, I'm going to say these words to you
and see what you lock in for five words, all right?
Okay, then.
Today's first word is curly.
Curly.
Yeah.
Curly hair.
Yeah, that makes sense.
I notice there's a lot of hair-related ones
every time Jono gets into the soundproof booth,
which I am enjoying.
The next word is bunnings.
Bunnings.
Bunnings.
Bunnings.
We can come back to it if you want.
What pops into your head?
I'll come back to that one.
Okay, come back to that one, Abby.
That's all right.
Your next word is 12.
The number 12.
12.
Producer Juliet, what's popping into your head right now?
Clock.
12 o'clock, okay.
Oh, yes.
O'clock or clock?
Let's go O'clock.
O'clock, okay.
That makes sense.
Yep.
The next word is university.
Study.
Study, yeah, that's good.
And celebrity is the final word, but we'll come back to Bunnings.
Celebrity, crush. That's a to Bunnings. Celebrity crush.
That's a good one.
I like that one.
These are toughies this morning because there's plenty of options for some of them.
And how are you going with Bunnings?
Let's go home.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
All right.
That's a tough one.
Tough one. A tough one Tough one
A tough one all round actually
So I'm going to bring Jono back out of the soundproof booth
He looked like he might have had a wee micro nap in there
It looks like he's back
He's refreshed
He's ready to go
One day I want to go into the soundproof booth
And come out emerged as a superhero
I'll luck out like the stars in your eyes situation
Yeah
Tonight Matthew
How did
How did...
Sorry, have you rudely talked all over you?
They were tough.
They were really actually quite tough words today
because there were options.
I'm not feeling confident.
She's not feeling confident, but you never know.
You never know what's going to happen right now.
Well, it sounds like I'm probably going to let her down.
Let's go on with a winning attitude, Abby.
Okay, yeah.
All right, we're going to do this.
Like Ben said, Team New Zealand, don't get out there All right, we're going to do this like Ben said.
Team New Zealand, don't get out there and go,
we're going to lose to Prada.
Yeah, these are the five words today, Jono.
What is the first word that pops into your head?
Will it match up with Abby's when I say curly?
Fries.
Maybe we should have gone in with a losing attitude.
Oh, Abby.
Abby.
Fries. Curly fries. Oh, Abby. Abby. Fries.
Curly fries.
Right.
I love them.
They're the best fries.
What did you go, Abby?
Here.
Yeah.
Curly here, mate.
That's not even on my radar.
It's not in my wheelhouse.
Not my zeitgeist.
Oh, look.
Okay, we're going to go through the other ones.
I'm so sorry, Abby.
Oh, Abby, I'm sorry.
But it's better to lose now than, you know, four down.
Yeah, I guess you're right in some ways. Okay, Bunnings. Oh, Abbey, I'm sorry. But it's better to lose now than, you know, four down. Yeah, I guess you're right in some
ways. Okay, Bunnings. Warehouse.
Okay, 12.
13.
University. Scholarship.
Celebrity.
Treasure Island.
Oh, not a single
one in the bunch.
What?
Hero to...
What did you say, Abby?
Sorry?
I said I think I'm the worst person that's been on this show.
No, it's not you.
It's me.
No, it's not you at all.
I feel like I'm breaking up with you.
Abby, hold the line.
We're going to send you out something, all right,
to try and make your day a little bit better.
What would make your day better?
You name something.
Oh, gosh.
It can't be $5 better? You name something. Oh, gosh. Oh, my God.
It can't be $5,000.
Name something.
How about, why don't we shout you and the kids dinner tonight?
Okay, that would be great.
All right.
Well, we've got that.
That's on us.
That's on us.
We'll sort that out, okay, Abby?
Curly fries all around, all right?
Enjoy those.
They're proud of New Zealand.
Woo!
Go New Zealand!
If only New Zealand was proud of them.
Jono and Ben. New Zealand's Woo! Go New Zealand! If only New Zealand was proud of that. Jono and Ben.
New Zealand's breakfast.
On the hits.
I know the world yesterday was glued to watching illegal downloads of the Megan and Harry interview
like you, producer Juliet.
Did you do that on the work Wi-Fi?
Uh, yeah.
Yeah, okay.
Interesting.
Anyway, radio content.
That's what we needed it for.
Well, I had my own issues going on.
Granted, Megan and Harry are going through their things at the moment.
But there's pales in comparison.
Okay?
Because yesterday, I managed to lose two wallets in one afternoon.
Two separate wallets.
Really?
I lost my wallet and my son's wallet in one afternoon.
Oh, so you were responsible for both these wallets.
Both these wallets go missing and
I'm officially the biggest loser.
I could,
and I'm no good at finding stuff once
it's lost. You know, I get
into a fluster. I don't methodically go
where was I last? You know,
I walked out of the car. You do get into a bit of a panic.
Depending on what it is, you kind of get into
a bit of a panic.
It throws you right out. As soon as you're running short
on time, you're like, I need my wallet to walk out the door.
You just rip the whole household apart.
A lot of times,
I'd be a shocking search and rescue worker.
I'd be like, oh, they're not here. We'll just move on.
Email their family.
We're never going to find them. Did you find them?
Both again? Oh, my wife did.
And she found both.
I didn't even find one.
And I always get accused of, oh, you're having
a man look, and then I get offended, but then when I
think about it, I'm five levels
below the man look. Like a legally
blind person would be able to find something before
I would. Are you a good finder?
Oh, okay, but I do
get it, but depending on how much time I've got, you do
get a bit flustered in those situations.
I always love a one, and my mum does it from time to time.
She goes, my glasses.
And you know, on your head.
It's always my favourite ones.
Because they're all like, you found them within a second.
Everyone has a laugh.
Those are funny search and rescues.
Yeah, those are the great opportunities that you love, right?
But not when you're lucky.
I've actually misplaced my wallet, and I can't pay for this thing.
My problem is too, once I've lost a wallet, because I've lost about four or five throughout my career.
And swipe cards, you lost swipe cards the other day.
Oh my God, yeah.
And I'm shocked and I'll be like, oh, that's gone.
24 hours later, have to order new cards.
So then I'll order like new EFTPOS card, credit card,
driver's license, AA rewards card.
I mean, there's so many rewards cards.
Brumbies, you know, my Brumbies reward card, the bread place.
Oh, the bread place, right, yeah.
And then as Murphy would have it with his crazy wild laws,
I get all these cards sent to the post office.
I finally get my full wallet of cards back.
Then I find the wallet.
Yeah.
And now I just look like an international con man
with multiple driver's licenses, multiple credit cards.
Multiple Brumbies bread.
He's trying to get all the bread, this guy. With multiple driver's licenses, multiple credit cards. Multiple Brumby's bread.
Trying to get all the bread, this guy.
So, yes, I don't know what the point of this was.
He's lost his place here as well.
Lost his marbles.
Lost my way even in this chat bit.
And I can't find my way back. Paid to talk words and stuff into a microphone.
It's New Zealand's breakfast.
Jono and Ben on the hits.
This is just devastating.
19-year-old couple, both 19 years old.
They buy the same numbers for Lotto every week.
So they just do it online and then their tickets,
because it's the same numbers, automatically refreshes each week.
I'm gathering it takes money out of a credit card or something
so you don't have to worry about the admin of getting a lotto ticket.
They won $182 million.
Their numbers were the exact same numbers that won the £182 million, actually.
So probably $900 million New Zealand dollars.
You can buy all of New Zealand for that, probably.
Yeah.
And Great Barrier.
Yeah. And Stewart Barrier. Yeah.
And Stewart Island.
And they went to collect, and unfortunately, they didn't have any money on their credit
cards, so it didn't automatically purchase the ticket.
Oh, no.
Therefore, didn't have the numbers.
182 million pounds.
But they'll be like, we're good for it.
We're good for it.
You know, you've seen us.
We've picked the numbers for the past.
We've got the money now.
You just pay it.
I mean, they're basically millionaires without the niggly part of having all the millions of dollars.
Oh, my goodness.
So we wanted to do this.
We wanted to open up a song to find where we put pressure on ourselves,
unnecessary pressure, to find a person who almost won the big one.
How did you almost win the big one?
It doesn't necessarily have to be lotto.
No, it could be anything, any prize at all.
How did you almost win a massive prize?
Will someone call within the next song?
I don't know.
We'll find out.
We've got one involving a vehicle and one involving lotto.
Who do you want to go to first?
Let's go lotto first.
Okay, Ginny Moreno, you're on from Auckland.
You almost won the big one.
Yes, yes.
Similar story.
It was a big draw, I think $13 million.
My husband had a lot of confidence in me.
I was cooking in the kitchen and he thought while I was distracted,
I could just find the numbers and I found five of them.
I was one off the six and I was also one off both of the Powerballs.
So, yeah.
So you must have won something with five numbers.
Only a couple thousand dollars, I'd say only.
But, yeah, my husband still feels like we were this close to winning $13 million.
Sounds like this has been a bit of an ongoing marital discussion
between you and your husband, Ginny.
Well, he still tries to recreate that moment.
Remember when you almost won, Mato?
Can you just do it again?
So you were one number off all those millions of dollars?
Yes.
Oh, my goodness.
What goes through your mind?
When you were actually going, I thought he was teasing me.
I thought he was playing a trick on
me when the numbers were coming out. He's like, oh,
oh, and we got up to six, and then he was
like, his face dropped, and I thought,
oh my God, we've won. We've won.
And he goes, we're one off.
I was like, oh, so we haven't won.
Oh.
Wouldn't your heart just sing?
And all the way through, you'd be like, once you got
three or four numbers, you'd be like, ooh.
Ooh.
There it goes.
There it comes.
You'd make noise noises.
Ginny, I'm sorry you didn't win Lotto.
And unfortunately, we got nothing to give you.
But thank you for contributing to the show.
That's all right.
You go and have a lovely day.
Thank you.
See you, Ginny.
We'll go to Laura.
We'll bring Laura on from Auckland.
How are you this morning, Laura?
Good, guys.
How are you doing?
We're doing well. Almost won the big one, they tell us Laura on from Auckland. How are you this morning, Laura? Good, guys. How are you doing? We're doing well.
Almost won the big one, they tell us.
Oh, yeah.
When I was like 12, I entered, you know,
like every competition under the sun, as you do.
Yeah.
And I never, ever read like the fine print terms and conditions.
I was 12, you know.
Listen, I'm 39 and I still don't read the terms and conditions.
I never won anything until one day we got like a call
from the guys at ZM actually.
And they asked for me and they were like asking me all these weird questions.
They were like, where's your favorite spot to drive to?
And, you know, do you drive your parents to the store?
And I was like, no, you know, bearing in mind that I was 12.
And they were like, well, now you can.
You've just won a brand new $44,000 RAV4.
You won a car. You won a car.
I won a car.
Yeah, well, I nearly won a car.
Oh, so what happened?
Because you were 12, you couldn't get it?
They, like, spoke to my mom.
We got all excited.
We, like, spent the day, you know, telling our friends and family
that we'd won this, like, brand new family car.
I was, like, the favorite daughter.
And then, yeah, they called us back later that night, they were just like no like laura's 12 she doesn't have a driver's license
it was in the t's and c's the monsters did they give you any consolation prizes well well you
know being there i did complain i was like you got us all excited so i called them and they were
like yeah yeah yeah okay, yeah, okay.
We're going to give you some things out of our prize cupboard.
So I was like, oh, my God, amazing.
Imagine what's in the ZM prize cupboard.
So they turned up to my house, two CDs.
Two CDs.
I tell you what.
Now, that is a consolation prize.
You want something that's going to be around forever.
CD.
Not a car.
What were the CDs?
Do you remember?
Oh, I can't remember. I want to throw Do you remember? Oh, I can't remember.
I want to throw out Ben Lummis, but I can't remember.
Lummis.
That's a good album.
That's a great album.
I thought even like a Now That's What I Call Music.
Yeah, that would be great.
Hits from all over the place.
Oh, that is.
I am so sorry.
And you know who I blame?
I blame Fletch and Vaughn.
Yes, no doubt it was them.
Yeah, blame Fletch.
You had a similar incident, Juliet, with The Edge.
Oh, yes, I did.
I was a tween and I wanted to win.
I was in the draw to win a meet and greet with Justin Bieber over in LA.
And they allocated all the people in the draw golf balls.
And then they picked a golf ball out for the winner.
And in the lead up to announcing the winner and picking the golf ball out,
they were like, oh, let's just do a trial one.
Like, just see, you know, who it would be.
And they call out my name as the practice one.
Why would they do a practice draw?
I didn't announce the winner.
No, and then they announced the winner
and then I was just fuming.
I think I threatened them somehow,
but like I was, you know, 13.
So what did I threaten them with?
Well, hopefully nothing too dark.
Well, you know who I blame?
I blame Fletch and Vaughn for that one as well.
That is Teo.
Thank you for your calls.
Real Kiwi blokes with soy lattes.
Mmm.
Shono and Ben, breakfast on the hits.
Bye.
Brought to you by the Rainbow Explorer train.
Getting you to Wellington's Pride Festival.
More info at thehits.co.nz.
All right, her job is to stay in touch so we don't sound out of touch.
Producer Juliet, you're coming in with some spy.
What have we got, mate?
So the Harry and Meghan saga.
Oprah has now come out.
I mean, you probably haven't missed it,
but a big bombshell in the interview was that there were conversations had
pre-baby Archie being born about what the colour of his skin might look like
and if it would inherit darker skin tones.
And they wouldn't, Harry and Meghan wouldn't say who it was.
They said that's one thing we just do not want to say
because it would be very damaging to that person or those people.
Overnight, Oprah has now come out and said
and ruled out a couple of people of who that might be.
Yes, and he did not share the identity with me,
but he wanted to make sure that I knew,
and if I had an opportunity to share it,
that it was not his grandmother nor his grandfather.
Do you reckon it was Charles?
Oh, why am I speculating?
Who am I?
Why are you doing that?
So it wasn't the Queen, it wasn't Philip,
that's what they're saying.
But you're right, it's speculation all around.
We just spoke to a royal reporter
and he went in on Meghan and Harry.
He has no sympathy for them whatsoever.
But he was like, by not naming,
you then cast doubt across the whole family.
Across everyone, right?
Who could it be?
Finger pointing, you know?
Yes, yes, exactly.
And I think Piers Morgan had said that as well.
He went on a bit of a rampage.
Harry just lets his wife trash his family.
But they are...
Portraying them as a bunch of ruthless,
bullying, racist...
No, sorry.
I'm not going to hold on.
They're also very positive about the Queen.
The Queen's lovely,
but we hate everything she stands for.
Is it hell?
That's not why they left.
They left who didn't fancy doing
Wednesday Royal Duty.
They fancied living in an $11 million
California mansion.
They've got everything they wanted. They've got hundreds11 million California mansion. They've got everything they wanted.
They've got hundreds of millions of dollars.
They've got their happy family.
They've got their celebrity chums.
And yet they're still whining.
It's a point.
It's a point whether you agree with it or not.
He's very passionate about his points.
Both sides of the argument, as we said before,
both Meghan and Harry and the royals have points.
I tell you what, the most exciting thing for me was
that they thought about moving
they thought
about New Zealand
not only thought
about New Zealand
thought about moving
I know
I was like
where would they live
with Lennox Castle
where would they go
I would eat myself
with excitement
you think you'd do that
what would I do
yeah I know
Juliet would end up
eating me
with excitement
but yeah no

bills edition
let's smash another one
we are getting ready your bills
yeah
getting ready your bills
it's quite weird to come in
to hear like a motorist
waiting for an intersection
You're like, oh, can I go?
Oh, no, hang on
Oh, yeah, I know, yeah
Those things always trip me up, those introductions
Because, you know, you kind of just want to
As a radio announcer, nothing brings you greater joy
Than coming in straight off the words
And you just, I don't know when the words stop
You came in with confidence, that was the main thing
Very fumbly start. My apologies.
But yes, we're getting rid of your bills like an amputated duck.
And if you want to send them through, you can just text bills and what it is to 4487.
That's our text number, isn't it, Ben?
Yeah, it's quite exciting.
We'll call at 8.30, 1 o'clock and 4 o'clock each day.
A bill-busting call.
And we'll pay someone's bills for them.
As John has said, just text bills to 4487. Let's makeusting call, and we'll pay someone's bills for them. As Johnna said, just text BILLS to 4487.
Let's make a call now.
Let's pay someone's bill.
Hello?
Hello?
Hello?
Hello?
Yep.
Hello?
Yep.
Hello, are you there?
Yep, I am.
Are you there? Yes. Hello? We've made this awkward. Hello? Yeah. Hello, are you there? Yeah, I am. Are you there?
Yes.
Hello?
You've made this awkward.
Hello?
Who is this?
Who is this?
Who's calling me?
Oh, look, it's Jono and Ben calling from the Hits radio station.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
Linda.
Yeah.
Linda Hanna.
Yeah.
From Waitoa.
Yeah.
They tell us you've got a bit of car repair issues.
I have.
$210?
Yep.
Well, guess what?
What?
We want to pay it for you.
Oh, sweet as.
How good's that?
Yeah.
I needed some good news for that.
Well, there's your good news for the day,
apart from that awkward start where we all said hello, hello, hello.
I don't know why we did that.
I don't know about the hang-up. Hold on, he's pinning don't know why we did that. Jono committed to that.
About the hang up?
Hold on, he's pinning me for that.
Oh, you really committed to that.
Linda was playing along as well.
Oh, I could hear Linda perfectly.
But Linda, yeah, $210, we're going to pay that for you at the hits, all right?
Oh, thank you very much.
Were you having a bad day, Lindy?
Yeah, a little bit of one.
What's going on, mate?
What's happening?
Oh, no, not much. Things might
have got off to a shaky start this morning,
but I tell you what, Jono and Ben on the
hits have turned them round. Thank you.
No, very much. No, you're welcome.
It's nice to get your car
all going again, all good.
Yeah, all good. So I know nothing
about cars. I was going to say,
I was going to say,
get your car going again
all good. Even like
dancing around, we don't even know
I just couldn't even say car properly.
I get really nervous. I have mates that know about
cars and they're like talking about cars and I'm like
oh yeah. Oh they'll scrotinate it.
Oh yeah but I don't know what I'm talking about.
Yeah so there. Ben, and if I can
echo Ben's touching words
I hope your car gets going good again soon.
Oh, that's great.
Thank you very much.
All good.
Let's live free.
That's how it works, Linda.
Oh, great one.
And tell us, who's your favourite radio show?
Ben and Joel.
Ben and Joel.
Ben and Joel.
Love them both.
Close enough for us.
We love it.
Love your work.
See you, Linda. Have a great day, mate. Okay, thanks. Close enough for us. We love it. Love your work. See you, Linda.
Have a great day, mate.
Okay, thanks.
Want more Jono and Ben?
You can catch up with the boys anytime.
Just search Jono and Ben on Facebook.
Now forget about the royal coverage because...
Oh, we'll just break away from our rolling royal coverage
just for a brief moment because...
There's some important things,
far more important things to talk about this morning, right?
Bigger issues.
Bigger issues.
Jono's put this on our combined sheet at the moment.
I'm like, are we really talking about this?
I mean, it's a great story.
And nine times out of ten, I'd back you on this one.
But this morning, it feels like, is this what we're going to talk about?
Yeah, it is.
When there's so much stuff to talk about?
Yeah, it is.
It is.
I mean, me and Harry got their issues.
I've got mine.
Okay?
They've had their platform.
When do I get my time to talk?
So I was walking back yesterday, Ben,
where we parked the car a couple of blocks away
and someone was walking towards me
and they were waving
and I arrogantly thought,
well, surely this wave is meant for me.
And so I started waving and smiling back.
They continued to wave and smile back
and then I noticed that their vision wasn't directly staring in my eyes.
And I had a sneaky suspicion that there might be someone behind me
that this person may be more familiar with than they were with me.
Then I turned around and I was like, uh-oh, that wave wasn't meant for me.
I'm misfired.
And there is no greater shame in a human's life
than realising, because you can't save it.
You kind of put your hand down.
Yeah, I know.
At least you were walking.
At least you weren't moving away from it.
I've had it happen at a restaurant cafe.
Someone walks in the door and goes,
hey, and I'm going, hey, way back.
And then they've walked past me to the table behind me.
And then you're like, you're all going to have to sit there
right next to them for the rest of the meal.
And you're like, oh.
And you kind of, you try and lower your hand,
but as in pretend you're scratching an ear.
Maybe I was waving at someone behind you,
but there's no one there or something.
Why did you think I was waving at you?
It brings great shame upon you and your family,
doesn't it, when you miss fight.
And in public too, because traffic was busy.
So some people would have seen that wave
and that would have brought a smile to their face.
We play a game here.
We've got a giant window at work,
which opens out onto a foyer.
And one of our favourite hobbies is waving at people
and them being very confused as to why we'd be waving at them.
Yeah, they're like, is that wave for me?
Some people will wave back and other people will just be like...
They kind of look around and then they point to themselves and it's like, me?
You're like, yeah, you.
And then you get about 50% wave back from people,
even when they kind of realise it's for, I guess it's us.
I mean, if it's other people.
Yeah.
I mean, the trick is just don't, just keep your head down,
stick to your own business, you know, like the royals do.
Stoicic stiff upper lip
don't say anything
about anyone
oh now they might
have to right
I mean yeah
surely the royals
are going to have to
come out with something
hey hey hey
we're not back to the royals
mate
this one was about me
don't try and force
Megan and Harry
into this one as well
I want to talk about
the royals
I don't want to talk
about your wave
your accidental wave
add these two men together
and somehow you get
three quarters worth of a normal man.
The Hits with Jono and Ben for breakfast.
Scrolling through your feed.
What's got two thumbs?
Magnificent head of hair,
a flawless complexion and dreamy eyes.
Harry Styles.
Oh yeah, he does.
Yeah.
In the meantime.
I was thinking that wasn't a compliment for me.
I was like, where's the joke?
And here it comes.
In the meantime, here's my beaten up old mate, Ben Boyce,
just scrolling through your feed.
So you've challenged me not to talk about Megan and Harry talking about Oprah.
Well, there is some big vaccine news that was announced yesterday
by the Prime Minister.
The government has secured an additional 8.5 million doses of Pfizer's vaccine.
So having already ordered 1.5 million doses, the new order mean there'll be enough
of Pfizer's vaccine to cover all
New Zealanders. Oh, that's incredible.
And it's free, isn't it? You can get it for free.
Yeah, so I mean, the
government, I think Jacinda was saying, they haven't
said how much they paid for it, whether
they got into a trade me bidding war or anything, I'm not
sure. But she said that basically
the cost of it is nothing compared to
human lives
and also what
happens to the businesses
every time we go
into a lockdown
and all that stuff
and for the economy
so I think it's
a great investment
and yeah
when does that arrive Ben?
From mid-year onwards
everyone's like
release the schedule
open the borders
release the schedule
show me the schedule
I want the schedule
I just bought the thing
it's like everyone
when you get engaged
everyone's like
when's the wedding?
it's like
alright we just bought the vaccine we shouldn't have everyone, when you get engaged, you're like, when's the wedding? It's like, all right, we just bought the vaccine.
We shouldn't have told you we bought it, actually.
I know.
Just waited.
Share me in on the Google Doc.
Put me on the calendar.
I want to know where I can get a vaccine.
We should get a vaccine expert on this week.
We should, actually.
To talk about all the...
There's a lot of myths surrounding it on social media, isn't there?
A lot of questions as well you have flying around your head.
Can you say someone was spouting off that the vaccine
is made up of baby fetuses?
Yeah, I think that is something that
a lot of medical, there is something
and I'm going to start saying something and I don't know the full
story, but a lot of medical research comes from
stem cells from things like that. So there is
a lot of things that actually outside of vaccines, I think
that come from that. And people just
when you break it down go, oh, that's a bit odd.
Right. But yeah, but I think it's the initial thing that they create stuff from.
And clearly I don't know what I'm saying,
but there is something to do with that.
So a lot of people, you know, and the chips, microchips and all sorts,
they think the vaccine's got.
So what, they're going to inject in us and then they.
The government's going to be able to track you.
And you're like, well, you're carrying around a phone.
You're pretty much on CCTV everywhere you walk.
Now, you've challenged me to find Megan and Harry news,
things that aren't Megan and Harry news.
Now, I've looked in the UK, you know,
because obviously that's the big news over here.
I've got some non-Megan and Harry news.
From the UK? This is good.
Was it hard to find this news?
It was incredibly hard to find.
How many pages did you have to scroll through?
So many pages.
But there's a kids' play centre, kind of like a Chipmunks.
It's called Big Fun.
And they're doing adult nights,
nights for adults to release their inner child.
So you can have an evening full of beer, banter, and ball pits.
So if you ever took your kids to Chipmunks,
you're like, I would love to go wild in this place.
I'd love to go playing in those urine-soaked balls in that ball pit.
Basically, no kids.
It's an R18 event.
There's a happy hour.
You buy one drink.
You get one free during the happy hour
and you can just go wild in the place.
There's going to be a lot of injuries.
There's going to be a lot of ACC claims.
There is no place worse than hell
than Chipmunks on a Sunday morning at 10am.
But the kids love it.
They do love it
and thankfully I've made it through the trenches.
I'm through that passage of life.
Ben Humphrey, producer Humphrey,
he's got a baby on the way. Prep
yourselves for chipmunks, mate.
On a rainy day,
you'll be like, oh, let's just go, and the kids
go, yeah, you'll be sitting there with a coffee
and with every other mum and dad
in Auckland. You're like, end me now.
You can't even hear yourself thinking chipmunks.
Oh, yeah.
Imagine working in chipmunks.
God, now those are frontline workers.
Doing great work.
It's great to have a place like that
because what would you do otherwise?
Play with the knives and scissors and stuff.
No, you're right.
What would you do otherwise?
Well done, chipmunks.
You're doing God's work.
They are. They are. Yeah, yeah, no. Yeah, no. Oh, there you go. No, you're right. What would you do otherwise? Well done, Chipmunks. You're doing God's work. They are doing God's work. They are.
They are.
Yeah, yeah, no.
Yeah, no.
Yeah, no.
The whole movie.
Yeah, no.
She'll be right
and at the end of the day.
Jono and Ben,
breakfast on the hits.
There's a song that we play
here on the hits quite a lot.
It's an awesome song.
It's by BTS.
It's called Dynamite.
Mm.
Now, BTS just announced
yesterday they're performing at this year's
Grammy Awards. They're a South
Korean seven-member boy band
and it's the band's
first single ever in English.
Fully in English. It's an
amazing song, actually. I was reading an article here.
A lot of the members learned English by
watching Friends. Yeah. A TV
show. So they're basically, BTS are easily the biggest
and most successful name in K-pop.
They've got millions and millions of fans,
not just in South Korea where they're from,
but all over the world.
But the song is impressive,
but we want to do something with it right now.
So we thought we'd play a little game.
You like games, don't you?
Yeah, I like games.
Name me some of your favourite games.
Cluedo.
You've been playing a lot of Cluedo lately.
Monopoly.
You're a fan of Monopoly?
Yeah.
We've got Simpsons Monopoly at home.
So it's quite good.
Burns Manor is the one that you want to get.
That's the most expensive house.
The tail tends to drag on Monopoly though, doesn't it?
Yeah, like a lot of set up, a lot of admin.
Keeping all your money tidy and your cards.
I'm not good at that.
Have you just got them all in a big jumble?
Yeah, a big pile, you know.
A flustered property owner.
So the game is that there's a very high part of that song,
and it's towards the end where things really kick up again from BTS.
He's nailing it.
I don't even know if that's like auto-tune or anything.
Like, that's high.
That's incredible, eh?
Then it kicks up another gear.
Sheesh, they're going to another level.
It's another level,
and it's a level that I'd like to see you go to, Ben.
Okay.
So what we've got is your phone connected to headphones.
All right.
And we've teed it up to this part of the song,
this phenomenally high part of the song.
Oh, jeez.
And Ben is going to sing a cappella.
But I can't sing normally.
You could be the seventh member of BTS.
This is Ben Boyce singing BTS a cappella.
Light it up like that.
Cause I, I, I'm in the stars tonight.
So watch me bring the fire, set the night alight.
Oh, jeez.
Shining through the city with a little funky soul.
So then I hit up like dynamite.
Uh-oh.
Ah, ah, ah.
So watch me bring the fire, set the night alight. Oh, ah, ah. So watch me.
Break the fast at the nightlight.
Oh, that's so high.
Shining through the city with a little fucking soul.
Ah, it up like dynamite.
Oh.
Oh, my God.
Hey, come back.
Can you come back to me?
Jeez.
That was awesome.
Oh, that was so good.
No, it wasn't.
That was so good.
Do you want me to play you what your version was? No, no. I'll play you. No, it wasn't. That was so good.
Do you want me to play you what your version was? No.
I'll play you.
I don't want to hear it.
Plug your headphones back into the studio.
That was amazing.
Here was your version.
Okay, this was you singing.
This was it.
He's a good guy.
I couldn't even tell the difference.
There's a bit where they just really ramp it up.
You nailed it. Just do me a favour. Yeah. Just don't listen back the difference. There's a bit where they just, they really ramp it up. You know it.
Just don't, do me a favour.
Yeah.
Just don't listen back to this.
Okay.
Okay, just, just, okay.
Just because you're like, I'll never get that awesome again.
Okay, all right, good.
It was, you sounded like you were impersonating your mum.
You know, when you're like, hey, it's my mum calling.
Hi, mum.
I think he was so loud, I couldn't hear what I actually sounded like.
Like normal, like, yeah, it was like, oh, jeez.
To everyone pulling a sickie today, you're not fooling anyone.
Jono and Ben, breakfast on the hits.
Bye.
Brought to you by the Rainbow Explorer train.
Getting you to Wellington's Pride Festival.
More info at thehits.co.nz.
Juliet is here, ready to tell us all on the Oprah tell-all
where Megan and Harry told all.
Here she is with the tell all, Juliet.
Thank you.
So there will be a little bit of Megan and Harry news shortly,
but in the meantime, Chrissy Teigen and John Legend,
they're kind of the it couple, it seems.
They're kind of everywhere in the news.
They decided to go on a little date night
and they decided to rent out a struggling restaurant in New York
just to
help it out during the pandemic.
Paid them a bit of money, probably quite a lot of money.
Dined there. Wine and dined. They
decorated it with balloons. Chrissy was wearing an
amazing outfit. Posted it all on the gram
just to support this little restaurant
which was quite a nice little thing. Oh, like a little
neighbourhood restaurant. Yeah, yeah.
I liked her post. I'm going to try and
find it for her because obviously they had a photo of them sitting in the restaurant.
Yes.
She's so good on social media.
She says,
Before your panties explode, thousands of dirty little wads,
we rented out this restaurant and supported this lovely Lower East Side establishment.
Because everyone would be going,
Oh, why are you ever, you shouldn't be out and about in a panty, you know.
Before your panties explode.
Trust me, when you first started reading that story,
my panties were almost exploding.
I thought that was pretty awesome.
She's like, all right, here you go.
Before you come and weigh in on us,
what are you doing out there?
You should be just like,
we rented this whole thing and we supported the restaurant
and we've got this whole, you know.
They did a good thing.
They did a good thing.
So that's what the internet's come to.
You have to front foot things.
Predicting the reaction.
Even though she knows that, you know,
she would have a good excuse if someone said,
oh, hang on, you know, but she's still...
God forbid anyone actually think,
oh, maybe they just rented it out and supported...
Why would anyone think like that?
That's too reasonable.
Yeah, exactly.
And in Harry and Meghan news,
which we all knew I was going to get to eventually,
they've announced that with Meghan's second child, they're having a baby girl.
It's a girl.
Just grateful.
Like, to have any child, any one or any two, would have been amazing.
But to have a boy and then a girl, I mean, what more can you ask for?
What a combo.
I was lucky to have the same combo.
Just cut it off afterwards.
Your job's done. You've got a combo. There was lucky to have the same combo. Just cut it off afterwards. Your job's done.
You've got a combo.
There's no need for any more.
You hear about those families that just keep going and keep going until they get the other gender.
They end up with like 10 children.
You've got a, but Ben, yesterday you were saying your whole family, you're surrounded by women.
Yeah, my granddad and grandma had six daughters.
Only daughters.
I'm one of, I'm basically the only boy really around because I've got three sisters. I've had daughters. Only daughters. I'm one of, I'm basically the only boy
really around
because I've got
three sisters.
I've had daughters,
my sisters had daughters,
Amanda's side of her family,
her brothers have all
had daughters.
Wow.
Have you ever thought of
one last rodeo?
No,
to be honest,
I'm totally,
I love what I got.
I wouldn't change it
for the world.
Aw.
Good on you.
Because it'd be awkward if you said you would change it right now because your family might
be listening.
But again, I would be, I'd probably want another daughter because, yeah, it's been nothing
but awesome things.
Yeah.
Girls are a lot tidier.
Yeah.
They just seem a little bit more advanced, don't they?
Yeah.
Girls are great.
Yeah.
There's some alliteration for you.
Yeah, exactly.
So, very exciting.
I hope they post a photo. I mean, you know, they say they want their privacy and they do an Oprah interview. It's some alliteration for you. Yeah, exactly. Very exciting. I hope they post a photo.
I mean, you know, they say they want their privacy and they do an
Oprah interview. It's a bit contradicting. But I really
hope they post a photo of the baby girl when it's born,
Harry and Meghan, because I need to see that.
Anyway. I'm sure they will.
I'm sure at some stage. Yeah.
They did release a little
clip of Archie running along the beach
with their dog in the middle of the
interview, which is quite cute.
Seeing him walk along and them just...
What sort of dog have they got?
They've got a beagle.
Oh, yeah.
Beagles, led by their noses, those beagles.
They'll eat anything.
There's a beagle in our family,
and it's one Christmas ate an entire Christmas cake
when no one was looking,
then spent four days on his back with his legs in the air.
Like, you could hit his stomach and it was like that.
Just full of cake.
That is why I love dogs.
It's a stodgy cake anyway.
Yeah.
And that's five.
For more, you can head to the hits.co.nz.
We apologise in advance.
Sorry about that.
Sorry about that.
I'm sorry to rope you into this.
Sorry you've been dragged into this.
Jono and Pam.
Breakfast on the hits.
The hits.
The hits.
Wrapping up our show with some positivity.
Yes.
End the show on a good note.
Give you a pat on your tush and send you on your way.
Let's go to Shay.
What's it going to be?
Good day in Carpenter, Shay?
Hey, I'm going to have an awesome day.
I've just started a new job for a place called Positive Behaviours as a dog walker.
It's a beautiful sunny Tuesday.
I'm not stuck in an office.
I'm out walking five, six, up to ten puppies.
Ten puppies?
That's a lot of puppies.
What's a good number to come back with when you go out with ten?
Oh, you want to come back with the ones you're left with generally.
Yeah, generally the rule, I imagine.
It's really in the job,
but I imagine that's one of the first rules of puppy walking.
Oh, puppies are a time waster.
We've had some puppies roll around the office in the last week or so,
and you just end up scratching their bits and pieces, don't you?
Oh, they just love it.
But how can you be miserable when you've got puppies?
Oh, good on you, Shay.
We're going to send you out some hell pizza, all right?
You have a great day walking those puppies.
Awesome. Thanks, guys.
And we'll take one more quickly.
Chelsea from New Plymouth.
What are you doing in Taranaki today, Chelsea?
Why is it going to be a good one?
I'm just about to finish work for the day.
Oh.
So then I get to go home and do whatever I want.
Ditto.
What time do you start in the morning?
4.30.
Oh, there you go.
All done and dusted.
You enjoy the rest of your day.
You've got the whole day ahead of you to do whatever you want.
Yeah.
It's time to go be a mum, I think.
Oh, well, you go be a mum. Be a mum good, Chelsea day ahead of you to do whatever you want. Yeah, it's time to go be a mum, I think.
Oh, well, you go be a mum.
Be a mum good, Chelsea.
And thank you guys
so much for listening.
We're back tomorrow from six.
I'll catch you guys then.
Have a great day.
Want more Jono and Ben?
You can wake up
with the boys' weekdays
from six on The Hits
and via the iHeartRadio app.
Jono and Ben
on The Hits Breakfast.
Friends of Skinny.
Happy, happy, happy, oh.
Oh.
