Starting point is 00:00:00 Today on the Wild Wild Web, the stalker from Baby Reindeer speaks. Welcome to the untamed realm of the World Wide Web. A swirling vortex of weirdness, bullying and self-obsessed social media posts. In this digital jungle, Jono and Vienna are your fearless guides. Leading you through the wildest parts of the Wild Wild Web. This is the wild, wild web Yes, welcome along to the show It's wonderful to have you with us, the wild, wild web And tell you what, something that's been all-consuming for Megan Pappas
Starting point is 00:00:37 During the live linear radio broadcast Has been an interview that Piers Morgan's been having I never thought I would say that Not a big fan of Piers Morgan And I don't know why she's chosen him to do the interview, but the stalker from Baby Reindeer, if you've watched that on Netflix, her name is Martha in the show, but her real name is Fiona Harvey. Here's a trailer from Baby Reindeer. You say this woman is stalking you?
Starting point is 00:01:01 Yeah. Like six months, maybe? Why'd it take you so long to report it? I think she needs help. She comes to my work, my house. She sends me emails like all the time. Are any threatening towards you? You've got really manly hands, haven't you?
Starting point is 00:01:14 Chiseled jawline. Should we run away together? I haven't seen it, but I know it's wildly popular and yeah, you became obsessed with the... So talk a story. So if anyone hasn't seen it so he is a comedian and the guy who uh the story is about plays the lead role so he wrote it directed it starred in it his name is richard gad uh so he's a comedian it was kind of like a
Starting point is 00:01:35 show he was doing right called baby reindeer these turned into a series but based on what he claims is what happened to him in his life yeah so, so he was doing comedy shows, and this woman came along, started stalking him at his place of work, would come to his shows. The bar that Amy Winehouse used to frequent, apparently. Was it? That's what I read, yeah. Oh, local. Oh, there we go.
Starting point is 00:01:54 And so she, this lady, would turn up to all his comedy shows? Yeah. But I haven't seen the first episode of Bambi Reindeer, and then it wasn't for me. But lots of time going to the bar every day, right, on the show? Yeah, she'd go to the bar every day. She wrote him allegedly 41,000 emails. She eventually got his phone number and text him.
Starting point is 00:02:16 She was calling his family. She was doing, like, threatening. She attacked his partner. She attacked him at one point. It's a pretty hard watch, but they claim that... I'm pretty sure they said it was a true story. They didn't say based on. They said it was a true story.
Starting point is 00:02:34 Does based on buy you a little bit of creativity? Yeah, I'll get Liam in here quickly. Liam, who's been working with us over the last couple of days. I'm sorry, I've got to try Has he got the hard facts has he Liam if we could just check you on that Microphone there just real quickly Now we're just talking about baby reindeer
Starting point is 00:02:52 Now you said before something you'd seen Online about the way they phrased it Not based on a true story It was what Oh I needed my phone it was something like We can edit it bro Sorry I just threw you in the spot um i can't think of what it was like captured or something or not or
Starting point is 00:03:12 oh i've said it's actually quite interesting because apparently it's like the vitamins oh really boy ah okay okay there must be love so lawyers are having like a bit of a hiss On TikTok at the moment Because the main page says A capturing true story Which means that like pretty much Everything that's in there
Starting point is 00:03:35 Has to be factual If it was based on a true story It could be like a couple of lies in there And that sort of thing Right So this chat Creative license if it's based on a true story. Today is like, his lawyers are like, if she can prove everything is incorrect,
Starting point is 00:03:51 he's going to have like a lawyer storm coming to him. Oh, jeez. Wow. And he would have been a lot of money off the show, I imagine. And Netflix as well, too. Oh, yeah, go Netflix. If it's true, who knows? I mean, the whole thing seems very very
Starting point is 00:04:05 messy she has disputed the fact that she sent 41 000 emails how many do you think you sent him a handful like what does that mean how many uh less than 10 10 emails not 41 right there's a massive disparity between the two yeah i agree i agree However, Netflix say they've got the receipts. They say they've got all the emails, they've got all the texts, they've got everything. Yeah, right. And some of them they show in the show, they show some of the texts, and they say that's all accurate.
Starting point is 00:04:36 So you'd think Netflix would know what they were doing. Oh, the Netflix lawyers before this even would have got to filming stage, would have double-checked and covered things off legally. She said she's happy for it to go to court because Piers was like, well, if these emails happened, we can easily tell where they came from with IP addresses and stuff.
Starting point is 00:04:55 Are you happy for it to go to court and for lawyers to fact check it all? And she said 100%. They don't exist. Interesting. As I say, I get the people love it um but it wasn't for me like you know i get i just felt very i felt icky watching it because i mean it felt like she the character because it was based on someone was true i feel like you know steve was a lot going on with her she wasn't you know things were right with her and obviously
Starting point is 00:05:21 things weren't right with him either but just felt this was kind of murky and it felt like it was only a matter of time before the internet went crazy and found this person and then death threat she's got and she's not in a great state then what's it going to happen to her i just felt really like oh for me it was just too i just couldn't do it yeah the internet oh geez we get it we get stripped up and remember we got stripped up in tiger king we're invested in that the well they talk about sorry they were just taking the article i was reading before they talk about oh they're like, oh, this lady's a stalker. Well, the people that have gone to,
Starting point is 00:05:47 how much length have they gone to to find this lady? Well, I mean, to be honest, they just went on Twitter and they found her tweets. But then checking in with all the stuff, you know? Yeah. I mean, you know, it's like. So he's, I haven't seen it either, but Piers Morgan was saying, you know,
Starting point is 00:06:01 he's got issues as well, the main character. He's got trauma, which he addresses. And to be honest, he's probably more open than I would have been about his life. What he's been through, yeah. Because he even shared on that show that he found himself a little bit obsessed with her. And he, I don't know how I say this without it being grim as.
Starting point is 00:06:23 Whacked off over it, didn't he? Yeah. There we go. I'll say it for you. He had a picture of Martha in her undies and depicted that in the show as well. Yeah, you're like, hey, well, that's just a youth thing, bro. That didn't have to go out. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:37 He could have left that out. He could have. I mean, in some ways, people would say it was a brave thing he's done. Appreciate the vulnerability. Kind of putting the whole thing. Very vulnerable. I'll be careful with my words here. Do you think it could be a combination
Starting point is 00:06:48 of his trauma he's been through, her mental state, and it's just ended up in this cacophony of wildness? Yeah. Do you think that could be a case? I feel bad saying that I think she's probably lying more than, I think she's probably lying more than I think she's lying But I think he has probably encouraged her
Starting point is 00:07:11 And I think he's a little bit to blame as well Because why would you go on Piers Morgan if Well I don't know if I mean I don't know if she fully understands Or understood the repercussions of it Of the show or going on Piers Morgan? Of going on Piers Morgan I mean, I don't know if she fully understands or understood the repercussions of it. Of the show or going on Piers Morgan? Of going on Piers Morgan.
Starting point is 00:07:30 Yeah, because it feels like you're opening yourself up. Just to tell your story, you know, get out there. Because before it was even aired. The producers would have, like, mind, you know, we've seen it before on those sorts of shows. Not saying it was what happened, but that could have happened. And Piers is a dick, right? So he was always going to, he knew his intention. Well, it's a great get for him.
Starting point is 00:07:47 Yeah, but he was always going to. 500,000 people were watching that live stream. But he didn't care about her. He doesn't care about getting her story out there. That's not why he did it. No, but that's what you say to them to get them on there. It's your chance to tell your side. I mean, I've said it multiple times.
Starting point is 00:08:01 Before it even aired, she went to BBC and said, he's a dick. That's not, he was misogynistic that I didn't it multiple times. Before it even aired, she went to BBC and said he's a dick. That's not, he was misogynistic that I didn't enjoy that interview. He, you know. Hey, we're just going to take a quick break from the Wild Web. We'll be back shortly. Welcome back. So she's not happy with that interview either.
Starting point is 00:08:20 Oh, it's just like, it's so messy. The parts I saw saw he was just asking Some pretty straight forward questions Well we only saw 20 minutes of it So it's like an hour But I mean you can tell in the interview She says she didn't watch the show There's moments where you're like well that seems like you did watch the show
Starting point is 00:08:38 So she's lying about that Then she's like I never emailed him Maybe once, oh no I sent him 18 It's like It kind of seems like she's getting caught up in her own lies. But I honestly think it's two people that probably shouldn't have opened themselves up to the internet. Yeah. Two troubled people.
Starting point is 00:08:55 Or each other. Sometimes you look at the completely different scenario, but the Johnny Depp Amber Heard situation. Both equally probably guilty parties. Just two people that shouldn't have come together or clashed. And then the whole world gets to weigh in on their troubles. A very serious situation as entertainment for the world. Yeah, it was like a courtroom live drama. About domestic abuse and everyone's like, get the popcorn.
Starting point is 00:09:19 It's like, no, that's not what we should be doing, humanity. Yeah, it's an interesting time, isn't it, the world? Yeah. I think we just like to see other train wrecks. To make our miserable lives feel better. Yeah. You're right. Especially when it's celebrities.
Starting point is 00:09:34 You're like, ha, your life sucks too. Celebrities used to be like a lot more, it felt like you could take shots as celebrities, right? Yeah, they felt unattainable. And now all of a sudden, you know. Now we learn right yeah they felt unattainable and now all of a sudden you know they had feelings yeah
Starting point is 00:09:47 not all of a sudden but probably over time you know people yeah oh my god they're real people and then you get
Starting point is 00:09:52 like a montage at the start of some documentary with all the fake night comedians making jokes but that's the thing I feel like monsters
Starting point is 00:09:58 and you know anyone can make an unfavourable montage I can whip an unfavourable montage of what you've seen this morning Megan oh god
Starting point is 00:10:04 don't say Megan close up shots music piano music get some cutaways of Ben going she's a nightmare stuff like that easy to make up even with the
Starting point is 00:10:14 roast of Tom Brady what jokes were fine and what were not were probably up to a lot of people's interpretation and obviously
Starting point is 00:10:22 his family and stuff his ex-wife and wouldn't be too happy about some of them so still going through it now although it did feel like in a lot of ways comedy raw comedy was kind of back in that form you know just say what you want in terms of the baby reindeer could he not just have said it was like based on like roughly based on an experience I had and just kept it brief. I guess he's being authentic to his creative vision, wasn't he? Yeah. He's like, this is the story.
Starting point is 00:10:52 I'm going to tell it like it is. He was like, she'll never recognize herself. And when we found out who it was, it's like, well, she looks exactly the same. Just the actress. Yeah. That was like he did say he would take in a lot of things that he wouldn't know. And you're like, well, I don't know if that's quite the case. What do you think the greatest show has ever been released?
Starting point is 00:11:08 Like drama or a TV show? Any show ever released. We'll just go Netflix. Okay? Greatest Netflix show. Oh, jeez. Jeez, dude. I would go Squid Games.
Starting point is 00:11:21 Oh, yeah. In terms of pop culture. And it's because we're locked in our houses. That catched us at a moment, right? Yeah. I don't know if the sequel would go as well. Yeah. Well, yeah, we're probably right.
Starting point is 00:11:31 Yeah. I'm sure it'll still be big, but yeah, that was at a time. It was a perfect time for it, wasn't it? You needed something really grim to make us feel like our lives weren't that bad. Yeah. Just a huge show. I really enjoyed that. Well, recently really enjoyed The Gentleman.
Starting point is 00:11:46 I thought that was a really, really good show. Are you saying the greatest show ever? No, we're talking Netflix. Just Netflix. I know, for Netflix. Yeah. I'm just saying off the top of my head what I've seen recently. You?
Starting point is 00:11:55 Yeah. Okay, I'm going to Google Netflix's biggest shows and you try and figure them out. I do think Good Place was great. Okay. What do you think is the most watched Netflix show of all time? Friends. Squid Game. Is it? Friends. Squid Game. Is it?
Starting point is 00:12:07 Yep. Number two. Number two. I'll give you a clue. Give me a genre. I'll give you a clue. Hellfire Club. Hellfire Club.
Starting point is 00:12:18 How's that a fucking clue? Is it? Is it Hellfire Club? Is it part of Sons of Anarchy or something or not? No. Hellfire Club? Is it part of... Is it like Sons of Anarchy or something or not? Hellfire Club. Yeah. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:12:32 If anything, you'd probably throw me off. Stranger Things. Oh, yeah. Of course. Yeah, that's a huge one. Yeah. Number three. I wouldn't have picked this.
Starting point is 00:12:44 Wednesday. Oh, yeah, that was pretty big with the, you know, particularly the younger generation. I wouldn't have picked this Wednesday Oh yeah that was pretty big Particularly the younger generation Who's that actor She would have been over here right General Tager Wednesday Then number 4 Dharma
Starting point is 00:12:58 The Jeffrey Dharma story People love their true crime Megan loves her true crime Was it the second episode? Money Heist was number five. Bridgerton number six and seven. New season of that coming out. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:14 Interesting. I enjoyed Suits. Suits is good. Isn't Suits still like one of the most streamed shows? Yeah, well, it kind of got back into, you know. It runs like Megan Markle. Oh, listen. Sorry. Okay. So that was television know. It runs like Meghan Markle. Oh, listen, sorry.
Starting point is 00:13:25 Okay, so that was television series. Then they've got movies most watched. Red Notice, the number one on Netflix. Is that the... Is that Helen Mirren? Ryan Reynolds one, isn't it? Yeah, Ryan Reynolds, yeah. Oh, right, no, wrong way.
Starting point is 00:13:37 And then Don't Look Up was number two. Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah, that was movies. And Bird Box, I haven't seen Bird Box. Oh, great movie. Is it? It's Sandra Bullock, wasn't it? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:51 And she had to drive blindfolded. Yeah. To whatever. Yeah. Seriously had to drive blindfolded. Like, what for? Oh, because it was. Was it Aliens?
Starting point is 00:13:59 Whatever it was, yeah. I'm like, great movie. Can't tell you what it was about. Whatever it was, you couldn't see, could you? Yeah. No, you had to keep blindfolded, otherwise they'd get you. So you didn't try and get away. It sounds stupid now.
Starting point is 00:14:09 It does sound very stupid. Unseen entities wreak havoc on humankind. So if you're blindfolded, they can't see you. Okay, that's high concept stuff. High concept stuff. Oh, there you go, Netflix. Yeah, that's changed the game, hasn't it? Netflix, when that came out.
Starting point is 00:14:26 There is a thing now, though, they're saying, I think I heard it this morning driving into work, that there's now so many streaming platforms now that it feels like the streaming platforms aren't going to do as well
Starting point is 00:14:35 because there's too many. It's split. Chasing a small slice of a big pie. I know, because at the start it was probably like, you did Netflix and then maybe one other. Now you've got so many and there's more and more coming out. And they've just got to stick at it,
Starting point is 00:14:48 right? And then only the strongest will survive. Yeah. I mean, honestly, if you had all the big players, $100, hundreds of dollars a month. Yeah. Isn't it? Yeah. You like to dot between the free trial months, don't you, and the free year? I did for a while. That's a lot. You've got to be on top of that.
Starting point is 00:15:03 Oh, yeah. I did did one I used to try it's just too much pressure what have you committed to? at the moment I've just relaxed because I would get something and I'd go okay I've got this and I need to watch all of Ted Lasso in a week and then you're just going to be stressed like come on we've got
Starting point is 00:15:19 three more episodes to get through no one is going anywhere before it gets to another night I pay for another week what happens does that mean it just automatically charges your credit card episodes to get through you know no one is going anywhere before it gets to another night I'm like pay for another week what happens does that mean it just automatically
Starting point is 00:15:28 charges your credit card so now I'm like chill out about that I think bang for your buck Disney's probably your bang for your buck isn't it with all they have on offer
Starting point is 00:15:36 the different channels Megan's squinting I'm like bang for your buck how much is Disney because isn't Amazon like 8 bucks and they have movies as well
Starting point is 00:15:44 they have really good movies. Oh, I've got Amazon. And really good shows. Yeah, you watch, yeah. Yeah, I think my daughter was talking about Trinidad. She's like, can we get Amazon? Because it's something she really wants to watch on that. Is it Amazon Prime?
Starting point is 00:15:54 Yeah, and it's like $8 a month. Yeah. It was when I signed up. It might have gone up. I think that's pretty good. They do that. They get you in, and then they'll just go, eh, just a little more.
Starting point is 00:16:03 It's got that Anne Hathaway movie on there. They make a lot of content as well. They've got good shows. Netflix feels like the OG one, the one that got it first, right? Well, they were lucky because they could just bloody splurge everyone's content and then everyone who was making the content was like,
Starting point is 00:16:18 hang on. Disney were like, we'll keep our movies for ourselves. Thank you. But remember when a Netflix movie was real shit? You're like, oh. But now they're like, you know, getting Chris Hemsworth doing big block. Just making movies for Netflix.
Starting point is 00:16:30 Yeah. Well, yeah, Adam Sandler, that's all he does now is make movies. Well, not all he does, but that's his main thing. And they're huge. They make it, you know. You don't have to worry about, you know, like, oh, yeah, the Fall Guy, which I thought was a really good movie, apparently not doing that great at the movies.
Starting point is 00:16:44 But you'd think if it was on Netflix, everyone would have watched it. It's really good. The Humble Movie Theatre might be an interesting future, wouldn't it? Yeah. I still like going to the movies. I'm going to go watch that today, The Fall Guy, at the cinema. Yeah, and it's called the cinema because it's worth it for the action and stuff. Yeah, and Ryan Gosling.
Starting point is 00:17:03 You want to see Ryan Gosling on the big screen too. You don't need him. You do. On a small screen. Hey, well, listen, we're off. We're going to go do some other stuff
Starting point is 00:17:12 but you're going to have a great day. Thanks for listening to the Wild Wild. Have a happy Mother's Day. You've been fishing for us to say happy Mother's Day
Starting point is 00:17:18 to you, Megan. To all the good mothers and Megan. Accurate. Accurate. What do you want for Mother's Day? Just a perfect Mother's Day for you.
Starting point is 00:17:26 Quickly, what would you do? Breakfast in bed without the kids. Just take the kids away for a couple of hours. Okay, there we go. That'd be great. Enjoy your Mother's Day.
