Now the Paralympics on at the moment and a couple of great performances by the Kiwis over there,
including Lisa Adams, who over the weekend won gold in the shot put.
Lisa Adams, world record holder and world champion.
She's just pushed it out past 15.
Oh, that's pretty big. Set a new record, and world champion. She's just pushed it out past 15. Oh, that's pretty big.
Set a new record, got a gold.
Wonderful moment.
Sister of Dame Valerie and Stephen Adams as well.
And she joins us.
She joined us yesterday over Zoom.
Holy shit, it's actually you.
Holy shit, it's actually you, you mean.
How are you?
Ben, do you remember me?
I fangirled over you and asked
my sister to take a photo of me and you.
Oh, who Valerie did?
Yeah. Was that at the Helbergs?
Yes. Yes, yeah, yeah.
The Helberg Awards. That was a few years ago
though, right? What was I wearing then?
He always talks about
what you were wearing that night, actually.
I'm always talking about it.
It was five years ago.
Jeez.
Hey, congratulations.
Thank you.
It was so awesome.
You said, I'm on TV last night.
It was freaking awesome.
I felt like maybe you were holding back a swear word.
And who would have blamed you if you had have sworn?
Because it was such an awesome moment.
Thanks.
Yeah, yeah.
I was holding back a sweater.
Why don't you say what you want to say now
and I'll beep it out.
I don't trust you to do that.
You don't trust me.
I wouldn't trust him either.
I used to watch your show religiously.
I don't trust him and I work with him.
I don't trust myself.
I can't even find the beep button.
And you've got another event this Saturday, right?
The Discus as well. So it'll be a while since you're home.
Yep, that's it. So yeah, doing
Discus. Discus is our fun event. It's just
something nice to do away from shot.
So yeah, just go have a jam at that.
See how we go. Go and have a jam.
Go and have a jam at the Olympics with that.
I mean, it's pretty crazy. I mean,
what is it, three years, Lisa, you've been doing
this and you're world record holder, world champ,
and now Paralympic gold medalist.
I mean, has it sunk in?
Do you know what?
I got asked that a lot, has it sunk in?
And it hasn't, and I don't think it will.
Wait, because, like, it doesn't change anything.
I'm still the same person.
I just have this.
Oh, you just got this gold medal.
Just this gold medal, just hold that up.
Yeah, just got this old thing.
It's cool, yeah, very
what do you call it? I've worked
really hard for the last three years
to get here and this was
the goal and we cracked it and it's like
cool, just, yeah, I had my moment
last night and I cried like a little bitch.
Got to hug and cry into the most muscular last night and I cried like a little bitch. I've got to
hug and cry into the
most muscular shoulders
of my sister.
Yeah, no, we'll get on.
And she must be so proud.
She is. She so is.
And I think it was extra special
for me because she is so amazing
as my sister.
And I've watched her do
what I done, you know what I mean?
I used to sit at home
on the couch and I've watched
her go and smash it
and then be on the top
of the podium, watch
the flag, you know, do the
buzz and I got to do that last
night and it's incredible
like the thing, the whole
feeling, it was amazing. Well you wouldn't
have wanted to share that moment with anyone else
I wouldn't imagine. No and here
I am sharing it with you. If you just joined us
we're talking to Lisa Adams, she
won gold in the shot put at the
Paralympics. Now your sister Dame Valerie
what does she say to you? Because
I noticed in between throws you'd run over
and sort of talk to her in the stands. What is she saying to you Dame Valerie? noticed in between throws, you'd run over and sort of talk to her in the stands.
What is she saying to you, Dame Valerie?
Oh, it's fully technical.
That was okay.
How do we make that better?
Or like that wasn't so okay.
You know, how do we fix that up?
It's pure technical stuff.
But you know, I enjoyed myself the whole time.
The whole time it was incredible.
Like the stadiums, I mean, there was so much atmosphere,
even though the stands were empty.
She echoed through the stadium as well.
But yeah, the whole thing was just fun, eh?
Oh, that's awesome.
That's what people dream of and I got to go and taste that.
So that was cool.
You got to do it.
And geez, you must get a lot of cool free stuff.
You got a heap of cool free stuff?
Yeah, we've gotten a couple of things, but you know if you're going to just come here of cool free stuff. You've got heaps of cool free stuff? Yeah, we've got a couple of things,
but you know if you're going to
just come in for the free stuff,
then you're probably in the wrong spot.
I'm just
doing that for the free stuff.
Yeah, like, we do,
you know, we get a few
bits and bobs. It's not like saying at a hotel,
John, I'll take the little shampoos and stuff.
Pretty much, eh? Like, why are you
even bothering me?
Oh, you're awesome.
I'm just going to train for
four years so I can get a free phone, mate.
So your family are awesome.
Obviously yourself, your sister,
your brother Stephen as well. Have you heard from Stephen?
Yeah, yeah, I have.
We have a family chat, eh, messages. But yeah, I have. We have a family chat, messages.
But yeah, I have all my family, you know, nothing too handy.
Just an emoji.
Did he just send you an emoji?
A shaka emoji.
A shaka emoji.
Is that all he did?
Or thumbs up.
He sent me these emojis.
Oh, the praising hands.
Oh, that's awesome.
Yeah, those are good emojis.
That must be New Zealand's most successful WhatsApp family chat.
The Adams.
Probably the world's most successful family
WhatsApp chat. We're going to just jump in
there from time to time, eh? But actually
earlier in the week, Valerie
jumped in there just checking
in the deets about my
comps and stuff and, you know, just the
old hit her up if you've got any questions. But it's
pretty tame in there.
So where's she staying?
Is she obviously, is she not in the village right now?
Or she is in the village?
Not at the moment.
She's at the track, but she's in Tokyo.
Has she gone home since the Olympics?
No, I think she stuck around, didn't she?
No, she stayed on to coach me.
So, and then you guys will be doing MIQ on the way back?
Yeah, yeah.
Hey, well, listen, to be honest, at the moment,
there's not much to come back here for.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
That's for sure. We're kind of in
limbo doing nothing.
Maybe sign up for a few more events
like your discus. Hey, so nice to talk
to you, and it was so awesome seeing you win gold
last night. New Zealand is so proud of you.
Congratulations. Thank you very
much.
