Starting point is 00:00:00 The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast. It's the cliffhanger. Cools do enjoy this part of the show, Ben, don't you? I do. This is where we get someone's, what they claim is their best story. We stop it at a point and then we decide, together, 4487 on the text, you want to hear the rest of the story. 100% of the time we always decide we want to hear the rest of the story. Or maybe today we won't. Maybe we'll stop it.
Starting point is 00:00:25 Just for once, I would like to not, but then I don't know if I could go on with my day not knowing the full story. We're going to bring Tyrone into the program. Welcome to New Zealand's Breakfast. How are you, Tyrone? I am good, and yourself? Yeah, good. Thank you very much. Thank you for joining us this morning. Where are you calling from?
Starting point is 00:00:42 I'm a truck driver. I'm on the road all over the place, all over Auckland. All over the place, okay. And you've got a story that you think is willing of a cliffhanger call, worthy of a cliffhanger call. So we'll get you to take it away with the first part. Several
Starting point is 00:00:58 years ago I was a policeman back in South Africa. So I was driving past a pub and I heard glass breaking so I stopped to investigate. I found this gentleman standing on the roof of a motor vehicle kicking in the windscreen.
Starting point is 00:01:16 So I was alone so I just stood there and watched him. Eventually he noticed me and turned his anger on me. I walked away. I told him, look, just smash up your car, and I walked away. And that's when he attacked me, and I knocked him down. Is this where the story stops? No, no, no.
Starting point is 00:01:41 So then he ran. He then jumped up and ran back in to fetch some friends. Uh-oh. So I just... Oh, no. Tyrone. Oh, Tyrone, he's gone. Oh, we've lost him.
Starting point is 00:01:56 Tyrone. Tyrone. We've actually ended on a cliffhanger. Oh. Cell phone. Tyrone? Tyrone. No, I want...
Starting point is 00:02:06 What? Already it had more details than a lot of stories. Okay, so we're on a double cliffhanger. A, will Tyrone's cell phone reception come back into play? B, what happened to Tyrone? Is he still with us? Will we know the answer to that question? 4487,
Starting point is 00:02:28 of course you do. You want to hear the rest of the call. Oh no! We've lost him back. Hopefully. Will we have Tyrone next? It is the hits. Tested safe for listing from home. Jono and Ben on the hits. I am back.
Starting point is 00:02:45 Because you left us on a heck of a cliffhanger. If you can just recap your story. Yeah, so after I started walking away from this guy, he came running at me and I turned down and knocked him down. And then he went running back into the pub. So I decided to vacate their premises as quickly as possible. But before I could get to my vehicle, So I decided to vacate their premises as quickly as possible. But before I could get to my vehicle, him and his mates came charging out of the pub.
Starting point is 00:03:17 So I then decided to try to slow them down by drawing my pistol and firing a warning shot. Oh, so you're firing in the air, are you? Not towards them, obviously. No, directly into the dirt and the ground just to try and get them to slow down so I could get into my vehicle and get out of there. Yeah. Jesus, this is scary. But that didn't even slow them down.
Starting point is 00:03:38 They just overpowered me and just on being threw my pistol to one side and then started to beat me. Oh, my goodness. So while they were beating me, a woman came along and said they need to kill me. What? And for one of them to go fetch the pistol and come back and kill me.
Starting point is 00:04:04 Oh, my goodness. Are you like, hey, lady, can you stay out of this? Yeah, well, at the same time, I'm still getting beaten. So they then decided, so one of them went off and fetched the pistol. Oh, my God. Well, then I remember hearing them say, okay, step back, I've got the gun, step back. Oh my goodness. So when they stopped beating, then I looked up directly into the muzzle of my pistol.
Starting point is 00:04:36 Oh, jeez. So at this stage, you're like, I'm done for. This is it. Yeah, yeah, pretty much so. What are you thinking in this moment? I wasn't thinking much at all. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:52 So, anyway, I looked up into the muzzle of this pistol, and the person squeezed the trigger, and it went click. Oh, dear God. So there was no bullet in there?
Starting point is 00:05:07 You had shot the last bullet? No, it was a full magazine. So the only thing I could, at the time, I thought, oh, misfire. And so they also realised that and they decided, well, put another round in the chamber. So they then put a fresh round in the chamber while they started beating me again. Oh, my goodness. Tyrone, this is harrowing. So then the guy yelled for them to step back again.
Starting point is 00:05:39 So, again, I looked up into the muzzle of my pistol, and again, the loudest sound in the world, it just went click. Again, the gun was malfunctioning. So they then threw it to one side, and at that stage, people came running out and chased these people away. Oh. So you could have been dead. I should have been dead, yeah. You should have been dead. Someone was
Starting point is 00:06:12 looking over you. Well, when I got out of the hospital, I went to the Omara to fetch my weapon. And it turns out when they disarmed me and threw my weapon, the angle the weapon hit the tar seal snapped the firing pin.
Starting point is 00:06:36 Oh, jeez. That's the only reason it wouldn't fire. And that's the reason you're still alive today. Yep. Mate, that is just the wildest story. Man, that is crazy. You floored us. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:56 Tyrone, well, thank you very much for sharing that with us this morning. I'm glad you're safe. I'm glad you're in New Zealand. Much safer. Yeah. Carving trucks for a living. Stay safe out there. Thank you for in New Zealand. Oh, much safer. Yeah. Driving trucks for a living. Good on you, Tyrone. Stay safe out there.
