Jono and Ben, new to your mornings.
Friends of Skinny, New Zealand's most recommended telco.
Happy, happy, happy, oh, oh.
Now Ed Sheeran, he's got new music out today.
He didn't know about our 90s, all 90s day on the hits.
No, he's ruined it.
Come on in here and ruined it.
And yeah, Ed Sheeran, we spoke to him actually last Thursday night, didn't we?
Now this was all before the news about his COVID came out.
Because the next day he pretty much went public and said,
oh, listen, I've tested positive for COVID.
So he's had to go into self-isolation with his little bubba.
Yeah, I had 14 hours of interviews when we caught up with him that day.
And we've caught up with him before.
We love Ed Sheeran.
But you could almost tell it was, you know, it was quite exhausted.
And now with the fact he had COVID, you're like, oh, I can tell why.
And then having to talk to us. So that's even more taxing and exhausting.
But it was actually one of the coolest chats we had.
A really, really insightful chat we had.
We found out a whole lot about his wife and his family.
And here it is for you now when we caught up with Ed Sheeran over Zoom.
Here we go.
Here we go.
Can we see him?
Can we see him?
Is he there?
How are you doing?
Yeah, not too bad.
How are you doing?
Yeah, I'm good. I'm good uh i'm glad to be doing promo you don't sound it yeah you sound exhausted uh it's do you know what it's been a uh this is like the week before the album
so the schedule's pretty in intense and there's also a uh a baby in the equation so it's yeah
you're in the trenches
you poor bastard
it's not the struggle is real but it's the juggle is real
and I'm trying to juggle both
yeah, Ed you know
we've spoken to you a few times and we love you like
a brother who probably wouldn't give us his
cell phone number but
do you know what I've left tonight to
come to you, it's night time in New Zealand.
I've left my wedding anniversary dinner to come and talk.
This is our commitment to Ed Sheeran.
This is our commitment to you.
And I have my wife, Jen, on the phone.
And listen, I just promised that my mate Ed Sheeran
would pay the bill for our dinner.
So, Jen, Ed's here.
Hello.
Hello. I just said you would pay for the dinner, So Jean Ed's here. Hello. Hello.
I just see you would pay for the dinner, Ed,
as a make good.
I would.
Do you know what?
If you want to send a bill to Warner New Zealand,
they will get that paid.
I told you, Jean.
I told you it was good for it.
Can I just say thank you for being such a strong rock
to your husband.
And we all appreciate wonderful people like you
in our lives that support us in our work, whatever.
So I'm sorry that he left the anniversary dinner,
but I'm sure he will make it up to you.
And thank you so much for being an amazing human.
Oh, he just did.
Thank you.
Oh, there you go.
Age here and save my marriage.
Yeah, John, I forgot a gift,
but that was a great gift.
Yeah.
Oh, thank you. i but but honestly man our jobs are not possible without strong people like that i mean i'm i'm like my my relationship with cherry is very much give and take and balanced and you
know someday she works some days i look after lyra someday i work someday she looks after lyra but
the partnership is is key is key and And being able to understand moments like this,
you're not necessarily choosing like me over your wife, for instance,
but she understands that sometimes work has to come in.
And yeah, she's great basically.
Well, it'd be hard for you in that regard too.
I mean, you've got to go away on tour for months and months at a time,
I imagine, you know, being a new dad.
Does that, that would obviously affect the way you'd look at going into tours?
I wouldn't tour if I couldn't take my family.
I wouldn't do that.
Yeah, I just wouldn't, I just wouldn't do that.
But I will say like the promotion of this album has been pretty intensive and pretty heavy.
And it would not have been made possible
without Cherry being amazing.
Like, every now and then, like, if I'm...
She'll never let me go sort of, like, nine, ten days
without seeing my daughter.
So if I'm going to spend any time more than that,
she'll fly to meet us with Lyra.
And whether it be Los Angeles, whether it be New York,
whether it be Paris or Italy,
she'll come out and sort of take days off work and come with Lyra
so I get to spend time with them.
So she's great.
It must get really hard at times.
What does Cherry do?
Cherry works for a company called Deloitte
and she works in sustainability for them.
She is, yeah, she's amazing.
She's basically saving the planet
and helping Deloitte go green,
helping other people go green.
She's managed to make our entire house
this sort of eco village.
And yeah, she's great.
She's great.
Do you ever get,
did Deloitte ever ask
if you can play their Christmas party?
Or anything like that?
Who do we know that knows someone? There's a separation there. did Deloitte ever ask if you can play their Christmas party or anything like that?
There's a separate, there's a separation there. I mean, sometimes Cherry gets emails from people at her work being like, can I do this?
Can I do that? But like, I'm her husband. I'm not like,
I'm not like her client. Like I just, I wouldn't speak to her anywhere.
Like if I knew someone who's married to someone that could do something for me,
I wouldn't be like, Hey, I think there there should there has to be a professional separation there i think
um and everything you know i have a manager and that's what my manager's for so so the cherry
will always be like this is my husband's manager's details if it makes business sense for him he'll
do it there's us uh catching up with ed sheeran we've got more with him uh next in fact uh we get
him to call a Kiwi fan
who called up her radio show,
had a really great story,
but had a wee bit of a bugbear
with Ed Sheeran.
You're not your bullshitting, man.
That was her reaction.
Yeah.
When Ed Sheeran talks to her,
he has to make an apology.
He does.
We'll do that next.
We'll do that after new Ed Sheeran
from his new album,
Equals,
and his shivers.
You got the hits.
It is new music from Ed Sheeran.
It's Shivers.
He's got a new album that is out today right around the world.
It is called Equals.
And we caught up with Ed Sheeran the other day over Zoom.
It's always so good to catch up with Ed.
And we got him to make an apology in part to a Kiwi fan. You you'll hear that in just a moment well we are excited about the new album uh equals of course
uh you've done plus you've done multiply divide but you don't i was reading you you failed math
so why all the mathematical uh album names it was more do you know i'm a massive coldplay fan
and coldplay every time they have an album it's like a it's like an event and they change
the way they dress that the stage show changes they paint their guitars differently the you know
the whole the whole feel of the album is one thing and I could say like viva la vida to you and you
would go okay yeah I remember they were doing this this and this and it looked like this and the show
looked like this and I sort of wanted to do that but with symbols and colors so i really
wanted to get to a point where i could put a billboard up anywhere in the world and it would
just be a color and a math symbol and people would go ed's got a new album coming out and i feel like
with divide it was that it would just it was just these big blue posters with a divide symbol and
be like oh because i've seen multiple and plus i know that he's got this album so it's the same
with the same with them equals and it's I just wanted to have, yeah, basically moments of...
You're a marketing genius.
You came to New Zealand a couple of years ago.
You played about 87 shows or something.
It felt like you were here for a long time.
We loved it.
It was great.
We painted a mural.
We maybe came on a little strong and you haven't been back since.
But one moment we wanted to play for you,
we spoke to someone, her name was Tina,
and she rang up our radio show a couple of months ago and she got engaged at your concert in Dunedin
and it made national news as anything like that would do in New Zealand.
We don't have much news here.
But we want to just play you what Tina said to us.
No, unfortunately Ed Sheeran didn't sing our song.
What's the song? What were you hoping for?
How Would You Feel.
And he came up to me and he said, oh, baby, Ed Sheeran didn't play our song.
I said, it's okay.
This was an amazing experience anyway.
So it then turned out that he was about to play his last song,
the most unromantic song Ed has, which is Sing.
And then he got down on one knee and proposed to me in front of a whole crowd of people so that
was that was her proposal oh man she probably came she probably came a year too late because
how would you feel used to be in the set uh like every single day but you know sometimes songs just
kill a crowd yeah no i know i know where you're we know where you're coming from she had this whole
other experience well she didn't know she was going to get proposed so they just were waiting
for their song because that's their song we spoke to her a couple of months ago would you mind if
we called it and we just get a personal apology from ed sheeran about not playing her song
to tina can we call her yeah yeah yeah for sure okay Hopefully she answers.
Ooh.
This could be a gross waste of Ed Sheeran's time.
Yeah, sorry, Ed.
Hello, Tina speaking.
Hello, Tina.
It's Jono and Ben calling from the Hits.
How are you doing?
I'm not too bad.
How are you fellas doing tonight?
We're good to hear from you, Tina. We haven't spoken in a couple of months,
but we did keep your number after the
Ed Sheeran story you told us.
Oh, true.
Yep, that was one epic story.
Yeah, it was. Listen, we've got
someone here who would like to make an apology.
Hey, Tina.
Ed Sheeran here.
We are actually on the phone right now.
This isn't like a pre-recording.
Sorry I didn't play. How'm sorry I didn't play.
How would you feel?
You're not, you're bullshitting me.
No, I'm not bullshitting.
We have Ed Sheeran on Zoom.
Oh my goodness me.
Oh, well, well, Tina, I'm really sorry I didn't play it.
But thank you so much for coming to my gig.
I do, I do.
I'm just, I'm just, I'm just happy that one of my songs is,
is, is your song, basically.
That's great.
I tell you what, myself and my now husband,
because we did get married,
we just absolutely loved that song
and we fell in love so quickly.
So it was always going to be our song
and it was our first dance at the wedding as well.
The first dance song as well.
There you go.
Tina, love your work.
You have a great night, okay?
Will indeed. Absolutely. Thank you night, okay? Well, indeed.
Absolutely.
Thank you so much, Ed Sheeran.
We love your work, man.
Thank you, guys.
Hey, listen, Ed, always fun hanging out with you, mate.
Well, thank you.
Thank you so much, guys.
And I'm sorry you had to miss your anniversary dinner,
but hopefully you can get back and give her some good love.
Give her some good love.
I'll say, Ed Sheeran said, I'm not good good love. Give her some good love. I'll say insurance here. I'm not
good at love. I'll try.
I'll try. You know what?
There's a Jamaican
dancehall remix of my song, Shape
of You. It's called Equal Rights by
Ishauna. Type that into
YouTube. Look at the lyrics of that
and let that inspire you tonight.
Okay. All right. I'm going to be that and let that inspire you tonight. Okay, alright. I'm going to be
trying my hardest to eat, Sharon, tonight.
Eat, Sharon. Love to see you, mate.
Take care of yourself and we can't wait
for the new album.
