Paddy Gower on vaping.
It's going to be on 3D.
He joins us in the studio.
Great to have you here, Paddy.
Good morning.
Thanks for having me, guys.
Nice to have you here.
Now, Paddy Gower on vaping.
Really, really interesting topic.
Because, you know, it is everywhere, isn't it?
I think there was an article I was reading about you over the weekend
that one vape chain has more stores than KFC.
Yeah, that's the Shosha Vape Chain.
And there's more of them in New Zealand.
And that's just one chain.
And it's the perfect thing to do a documentary on because nobody,
despite the fact that they're sucking this into their lungs,
nobody really knows that much about what they're doing.
That's the thing.
Did you find out what potential long-term health effects are going to be?
Yeah, and one of the big problems with that is we don't really know.
We haven't had time to sort of look at what it does to people in 10, 20, 30 years' time.
And that's the big question around it.
We know from the science that it's better for you than smoking.
Vaping is there to get you off the durries, right?
And that's great.
I know that from personal experience.
My mum was addicted to smoking.
She died of lung cancer before vaping was around.
But the question for me is, what about people who have never smoked
and then take up vaping?
And that's the big question for me,
is these kids or young people
or anyone really in New Zealand
who's vaping without having smoked,
like what are they doing to themselves?
It feels like there's a lot of liquid sitting on lungs.
Like when you hear a vapour cough,
it's like quite a wet cough, isn't it?
Yeah.
The only thing that's meant to go into your lungs
is fresh air you know if you think about it you know you're not meant to put something into your
lungs 50 60 70 times a day you know we went down to the ESR which is the scientific testing thing
here and they test sort of various vape juices on the market and one of them you know there's no
standards to make this stuff or very few standards they They found saliva in one of the vapes.
Saliva, really?
Yeah, yeah.
So that's just showing that whoever made that particular vape juice
didn't have very high standards.
And kids are doing it.
Kids at intermediate, at high school now, you know, one in five.
What is it, one in five teens in New Zealand?
Yeah, yeah.
And intermediates, it's rampant in intermediates.
And then what do you do if your kid gets addicted to vaping?
How do you get them off it?
You know, what's the plan?
And, you know, I go and make a vape juice.
It's easy to make.
I make a brand.
I call it PG.
Parental guidance.
Yeah, yeah.
Because no vape would ever have parental guidance.
And it's pretty easy.
I made raspberry lamington flavour vape juice,
and it's pretty simple to do.
It's not sort of rocket science.
I notice you've got a fancy new suit.
It's obviously selling quite well.
That's right.
This is what you dress like when you become a vape lord.
And, you know, that's it.
I sort of don all this stuff
and we pour in the raspberry you pour in the coconut you pour in the um vegetable glycol
which is the same sort of stuff that goes in a smoke machine you know which is what creates the
the puff and then you go over and get the big canister that's got the nicotine in it you know
and you only need a tiny tiny amount to go into all this juice.
If you have anything more than a teaspoon or whatever,
that's virtually poison,
because that's what nicotine is.
But that's what changes everything.
The nicotine, the same stuff that wrecked generations
and generations of people around the world,
we're literally putting into something,
and we're selling it to our kids at dairies.
That's nuts.
You mentioned your raspberry lamington flavour.
We spoke to someone from the PG on the market now
at all good Shosha shops.
PG Vape Juice, find it at a Shosha shop near you.
Paddy's hooked now after the doco.
We spoke to someone from Life Education Trust.
He said six and seven-year-olds vaping in some primary schools and they're just
the flavour, the berry, the strawberry
it's like designed for children because it's meant
to obviously save lives
I guess in a lot of ways compared to smoking
Yeah and it can save lives
and if my mum was around
and vaping was around, I would have got
her a vape. The problem is we've
gone and we've given that
to a generation that didn't smoke, probably wasn't going to smoke,
and is now addicted again.
So we're swinging it back to the Darys now.
Full circle.
Yeah, yeah.
We're coming.
After doing the doco, what's the solution?
I'm saying that we need to massively, massively crack down,
tightly, tightly control it and make it really, really hard to get.
For some reason, these sort of things happen, Ben,
where we suddenly just do stuff.
We did it with party pills.
We just sort of suddenly do it.
That was a wild bloody time.
The old radio stations were giving them away.
We just sort of do something,
and it just takes a little bit of time for Kiwis to go, hang on.
I'm still coming down from the bloody party pill.
Yeah, mate.
I'm still trying to come back up from the come down bought some of the sandringham dairy and went to the big day out but it's interesting you bring that up it feels like okay you eliminate
one thing another thing comes along yeah then another thing will come along after vaping yeah
that's right so there's you know it's sort of part of human nature. But deep down, we're
addicting people to make money.
That's what's happening with it. We're
addicting people to something to continually make
money off them. And that
sucks. It really does.
Pata Gowar tonight in Catch's documentary
on vaping. Thanks.
