The Hits, with the Jono and Ben podcast.
Cheers to Dilma, making the world a better tea.
He's a celebrity personal trainer, a businessman, star of The Bachelor Australia, Sam Wood.
Come on down.
Thanks for having me.
Nice to be here.
Producer Taylor, who works with us, she's Australian.
She's like, oh Sam, he's a big deal.
He's buddy big deal.
So, you know.
And you guys have no idea who I am, eh?
We got The Australian Bachelor over here,
but I don't know if we got your series.
I was a long time ago.
So I was season three back in 2015,
which was a pretty amazing story.
I met my now wife, Snez,
and she had a little nine-year-old.
We fell in love, got married,
and we've had three more girls.
So we've now got four daughters,
and it all started from a ridiculous reality show.
That's called Batchy Babies.
Batchy Babies. Batchy Babies.
That's right.
I was reading the article in Australia.
I was like, that's pretty cool.
How did you find that experience going on a reality show
and being manipulated by TV producers?
I didn't love it, to be honest.
Yeah, I mean, I get where you're coming from.
I love the outcome, but the actual process was not being manipulated,
but it's pretty grueling.
But, yeah, I'll never regret it, meeting my wife and Evie so yeah it's good I thought
you said gonna say I'll never do that again I was like that's a good thing to say
given you're married 10 year reunion I'll be back
So you're a personal trainer as well and over 50,000 personal training sessions over 15 years that's a lot of wiping down equipment
It is, a lot of wiping down equipment i've been in the industry now for 23 years i did it for 15 years before the show and uh i'm still
doing it now i've got a gym down in melbourne and an online fitness program which we launched
been pretty big in australia we've had nearly a million australians do the program so yeah it's
been crazy what is the program uh it's called 28 by Sam Wood and it's all about quick, easy workouts
that you can do from home
that are 28 minutes or less
and really quick,
easy, convenient recipes.
We've got heaps of mums
that do the program
that, you know,
consistency is really important
for results.
Anything you can do
to reduce those barriers
and get people working out
and it's really expanded.
We've now got myself
not just as the trainer,
we've got Pilates
and yoga
and boxing
and low impact workouts and low-impact workouts.
And we've always had lots of New Zealanders sort of organically join the program,
but we're here to find a New Zealand trainer
and we're here to get some New Zealand recipes
and get a New Zealand nutritionist on board
and get more New Zealanders to take part.
I'll nominate a New Zealand recipe, the pavlova.
One of my favourites.
One of my favourites. One of my favourites.
We claim that.
We claim it too.
That was a dig, wasn't it?
What's the future of the fitness industry and weight loss?
Can we get a robot to lose the weight for us?
How are we looking, Sam?
What's the future look like?
Well, it's a scary future, isn't it?
I think from a tech perspective, wearables are really big.
Giving people immediate feedback, not just your steps and that kind of stuff it's really
progressing further you know sleep feedback and how much you're resting and you know everyone's
jumping in an ice bath these days so you know the future is really interesting there's a lot of you
know even the weight loss injection thing is gone bananas overseas that hasn't really gotten to our
shores yet what's's that, sorry?
Yeah, the ozempic stuff's really, you know, you say, what's the future?
That's gone absolutely gangbusters overseas.
I mean, my concern with it is they're not really trying to transition you off the drug.
It's like, just keep taking the drug and you'll lose weight. But there's no sort of lifestyle intervention happening there.
I think it needs to be definitely accompanied with walking or low impact.
So you might take it to get your start,
but then eventually you wean yourself off it.
I think that's really important.
There's some really cool things that you suggest that I see online as well.
Like there's a $6 resistance band you got from Kmart.
It doesn't need to cost the thousands for Jimmikund.
100%.
Yeah, I think a couple of sets of dumbbells,
a couple of $6 Ks a couple of yeah six
dollar kmart resistance bands maybe a mat and it's amazing how effective it can be you can get such
good results like the results that we see with people they all say i thought it was all about
the workout and i realize it's actually just moving my body consistently and the fact i can
sort of roll out of bed in my daggiest pajamas and do a workout while the kids are playing or
the kids are still sleeping is super convenient and and it's been a game changer uh what's been the greatest fitness
fad you've seen because they come and they come hard and they go because i got sucked into a
bloody ab circle pro and i'll show you one of them in the garage still very unprofessional abs i've
got on me uh there sam the one that I've seen, late 90s,
which shows how long I've been in the industry, kangaroo boots.
They were the spring-loaded, ridiculous shoes.
They used to have these ridiculous people bounding down the road like Skippy
and somehow convinced them that this was going to give them
toned buns of steel.
People were nearly breaking their necks as they waved through traffic.
But yeah, there's been some rippers out there.
So the kangaroo boots didn't stand the test of time.
No, they didn't.
They didn't.
Awesome that I meet you today, Sam Wood.
Great to meet you guys.
If someone just wants to take part in the program, how can they find it?
To celebrate the launch in NZ, we've got 60% off our next 8-Weck Challenge,
which starts on Monday.
And you just head to our website, which is 28bysanwood.com.
I'd love to work with you.
The more New Zealanders we get on, the better.
And, yeah, if you are a trainer in New Zealand or a recipe creator
or a nutritionist, make sure you reach out to me.
I'd love to speak to you.
Sam Wood, he was a celebrity trainer and also was the Bachelor in Australia.
