The Hits, with the Jono and Ben podcast.
Cheers to Dilma, making the world a better tea.
And yesterday, about 24 hours ago, I had a pretty shocking moment.
And you were part of this email correspondence as well.
I enjoyed it. I enjoyed it for a number of reasons,
but the main one being that this couldn't have happened to a person
who would get more anxious about what he sent to a stranger.
We don't really know this.
Yeah, we're hosting some stuff for a big company in a couple of months' time.
And as part of the little video that we were doing,
we wanted some silver morph suits, you know,
like the suits you zip up over your head.
And I found some online and the company were like,
I'll just buy them and we'll reimburse you.
So I bought the morph suits and then I went to forward the email
from the place that came through
just to verify how much it was.
On the website.
On the website.
Now, this seemed like, to me, a legitimate website.
I mean, it had the silver morph suits.
They arrived.
It was all good.
We were happy with the purchase.
The transaction was textbook.
But as I sent the, forwarded on the email
to the company, and also to our agents as well,
who are a whole lot of professional people, three or four as well.
Here's the suits, just so you know how much that we'll claim back on.
Yeah, exactly.
It was come back from the website on their receipt.
They had the morph suits on there, the price, which was great.
And then I forwarded it on and I didn't realize until afterwards they had down the bottom
other items from the website you might like.
Yeah, so it was under the category of you may also like, dot, dot, dot.
So because I'd bought these silver morph suits,
apparently according to this company,
I may also like the following items with pictures.
Yeah, thank you.
The appropriate music.
With pictures and models too, modelling the items.
And I had sent this on the email.
It's gone.
And I realised afterwards, oh dear God,
it's got other items you might like
and it's got
shiny black catsuit,
50% off.
Yeah, I've seen that.
I saw the shiny black.
It's very tight
and it's sort of got
studs on it,
like sort of silver studs.
Yeah, with sort of models
modelling that along.
Like if Catwoman decided
to get into dominatrix.
They've got women's sexy lingerie panties 30% off.
And I think there was a lot of material taken off in that 30% as well
because they're very see-through and heart-shaped.
They are heart-shaped.
And then the undercarriage is a pearl necklace.
So it goes, I don't know what the comfort's like on those,
but yeah, that was someone had cut grandma's pearl necklace in half
and attached it to the other half of underpants.
There's also a cat leather, you know, like a leather suit, a cat suit as well,
where a very thin front and back as well.
I don't know how I'm squeezing all my bits into that, but you know.
It was very tight fitting.
And it would be like if someone who would be attending an adult party
was also off to do a 50-meter freestyle in the pool.
Great for that.
And also a woman's choker necklace and some fluffy whips as well.
So these are all things that I've forwarded on to this professional.
Strangers.
I'm like, oh, dear God.
And what do you do?
Because you've sent it.
There's no function where you can retrieve that email.
I should have looked down the bottom of it.
I didn't.
I just forwarded it on because I didn't want to doctor
the receipt. All I'm thinking is, what are those
morph suits used for in another life?
Like, there's zero visibility
in them. I don't know what you're getting done in them.
So yeah, I don't know if we'll have that job anymore.
Let's go.
Jono and Ben with five words
for 5k. Stop any time
to keep the cash. Thank you.
Or play on to win more.
It's a bit of a rain around the country and hopefully we're raining cash. Well we're going
to be raining cash today. $5,000 a guaranteed winner. We've got to give it away and we're
playing it a little different. We're going to just go and try and get to the fifth words today.
There's no money as you go along the way. You don't get that choice because we want to give
away $5,000 so we want to try and match all five words. So it's all or nothing this morning.
So we keep playing until the money's gone.
Yes.
From this point forward.
And let's welcome from Christchurch, Ashley, to New Zealand's Breakfast.
Morena.
Morena, guys.
How's it going?
Lovely to have you on, Ashley.
Christchurch cold.
What's it doing there at the moment?
It's always cold.
Always cold.
It's going definitely be infinitely cold.
A little birdie told me that you probably shouldn't be talking to birdies,
but also said that it's your birthday this weekend.
It sure is on Sunday.
Oh, happy birthday.
And what a treat this would be, $5,000.
It would be amazing, but I would also use it to help some people.
So, yeah, it would be an amazing prize.
Okay, who are we helping?
Oh, I support people with incurable cancer.
So we do like little treats.
So it would be nice to be able to add like a sports game
when we drop off vouchers and stuff.
Oh, my gosh.
Every birthday, we take sports.
So this would help me do that.
Oh, my goodness.
She's putting the pressure on her.
Who is going into the booth? $5,000 towards people.
Okay, who are you going to send in? Please don't say Ben.
I was going to say Ben.
Ben, boys.
Do it for the incurable cancer,
my friend.
Into the booth he goes. It's the
must-win Friday.
Five words for $5,000.
You thought FIFA and football was the biggest F word event in the country at the moment.
It's not.
It's five words Friday.
Let's get into it, Ash.
Let's do it.
Jono.
Ben.
Ben.
Wife.
Yeah, definitely.
Husband.
Warriors. Oh, definitely. Husband. Warriors.
Oh, that's tricky.
I would probably have to go
with League. League.
Yeah, producer Taylor
loves the Warriors, so
maybe, yeah. I think
she'd go League, yeah. Yeah, producer Taylor
does love the Warriors. She loves them so much
she decided to marry one of them.
Well, that's what I mean. Kardashian,
word number four for you, Ash.
Well, I think of tin when we
think of that, so let's go tin.
Yeah, right. And potato.
Well, if I won, I'd be
buying lots of chips for the weekend,
so let's go chip.
That is bloody rock solid. You've
played a great game. We'll get Ben Boyce
out of the soundproof booth.
No pressure.
No pressure, Ben.
We're just both saying no pressure.
Just think of those people with incurable cancer, okay?
That's all you need to do.
Okay.
All right.
Here we go.
I had a look at these last night because the words were on Instagram as well.
So you can formulate a bit of a plan.
So I've got a plan.
I'm not going to deviate from that.
Did you look at the Hits Breakfast Social last night, Ashley?
Yeah, I did.
So you formulated a plan too
and it felt like
a rock solid one.
We're only doing that
for this first game?
Well, now I'm like
questioning myself
because the funny thing is
I did this for my husband
and he only got two matches.
Oh, okay.
I was like, oh man.
We'll see how we go.
We're just going straight to the go. Word one, $25.
We're just going straight to the $5,000, remember, though.
Jono.
Jono, the first word, Jono, Ben.
There you go.
One from one, Ashley.
Second word, wife.
Husband.
There's two from two.
Okay, good, good.
Warriors.
Warriors, I was thinking league. Three from three. Time for wedding. Warriors. Warriors, I was thinking League.
Three from three.
I'm sweating.
Kardashian.
The obvious one that I was thinking,
well, the one that pops into my head,
is Kim out of the Kardashians.
Oh, we are one away.
Oh, this could be done before it's even started. I'm like almost crying.
Come on. Oh, my gosh. Okay, Producer Taylor's I'm like almost crying. Come on, boys.
Oh, my gosh.
Okay, Producer Taylor's got the cannon, the confetti cannon, Joel.
Okay.
Here we go.
Vote five.
$5,000.
I really wish I told you beforehand where I was going to go because I might deviate now, but okay.
Potato.
What are you thinking?
Potato.
Well, it's good to try and go with what I was going to go with what I decided yesterday, Ashley.
Go with what you're going to go with.
Chips.
Chips!
Oh, we did it!
Ashley!
Ashley!
Ashley!
Ashley, $5,000!
Oh, my goodness
I thought we were going to be here
Until tonight
Oh my god, I am honestly going to
Go out and buy like the nicest
Stuff and spread some love
I'm not just saying that, thank you guys so much
Oh, you've just
Incurable cancer Ben Boyce
That was all the drive we needed
I'm going to definitely, definitely Spend some, because to be honest You've just, incurable cancer Ben Boyce, that was all the drive he needed.
I'm going to definitely, definitely spend some, because to be honest, I spend my own money doing stuff all the time, and so, yeah, I'm definitely going to put $1,000 aside for
that.
Oh, Ashley, $5,000.
Thank you for listening to the show.
Thank you for everything you do for everyone else out there as well.
I'm so sorry to everybody that wanted to play.
I'm in tears.
Thanks, guys.
This couldn't have gone to a nicer person.
It means a lot.
Wow.
I'm just speechless.
Ashley, $5,000.
Can I just have a little jibe at you, Ashley?
Sure.
We had nothing else planned for the rest of the show.
You want some content?
We do, actually.
You've put us in a precarious position now.
We have.
We're going to keep playing.
Let's just wrap the show up now.
Thanks for listening.
We'll catch you Monday.
The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast.
FIFA, Football Women's World Cup on at the moment.
And it couldn't have started a better way.
Both New Zealand and Australia, the host nations winning their games.
Aussie beat Ireland 1-0, and a magnificent game last night at Eden Park,
wasn't it? Sold out crowd.
How incredible was that? Yeah, over 42,000 people.
It was the biggest football game ever attended by anyone in New Zealand.
And yeah, just amazing.
The first win ever for the football ferns.
Hannah Wilkinson scored that incredible
goal uh which is awesome and yeah just amazing amazing scenes for them to hold on through nine
minutes of injury time as well that's nicely done hand is off after it wilkinson's in the middle
so good you catch it the whole tournament on Sky Sport as well.
Just incredible.
Go along, support some games.
Amazing that we had their first ever after five World Cups.
They got their first ever win against the 12th place Norway side.
Geez, I'd love to do one game of football as a commentator.
Yeah.
Benjamin Moos!
The Spanish commentators, geez, they really give it their all, don't they?
They get right behind it.
Now, we are playing our own beautiful game in no way associated with FIFA.
No.
No, this is our beautiful game where I find an anthem of one of the 32 countries.
Ben, you have to try and figure it out.
I'll give you some clues as well as to what country it belongs to,
but if you can beat Ben on 0800, the hits, you win this morning.
Yesterday, we had the South Korean National Anthem.
And do you know another fun fact about South Korea?
They must legally
use Internet Explorer.
They're not allowed to use Google.
They signed a deal with the devil with Microsoft.
There we go.
Here's today's one.
So So this, they all sound the same.
It feels like back in the day, some composer jumped on a boat and just sold slightly different versions of the same song to everyone.
Wouldn't it be great if you could pick just an iconic song from places?
Yeah.
Like, oh, we want Dave Doblin's Slice of Heaven, or we want, you know,
like what, Macaray, you know. But, okay, we want Dave Dobbins' Slice of Heaven, or we want you know, like, what
Macaray, you know. But, okay, so
I'll enter the hits if you know. Here's a clue.
The country has four time zones.
So it's big.
The flag has 27
stars on it. 27 stars?
They're not prominent. I actually had
never noticed them before. Okay.
Very thrusty dance culture.
Ah. Okay. You'rey dance culture. Ah.
Okay.
You're allowed one guess and one guess only.
Only?
Well, has anyone got it?
Well, I don't know.
We'll go to Cameron in South Auckland.
What are you writing the anthem as, Cam?
Oh, my God.
You've got me stumped here, guys.
Jeez.
Well, thanks for your call, Cam.
Thanks for calling up and saying you don't know
You don't know
I was just hoping
That you'd formulate a plan
At the time it was on
Okay
Claudia on
Welcome Claudia
What's the anthem?
It's Brazil
Brazil
Yeah that's
That is what I was
Was thinking
After your clues
But you could have stopped
Claudia from winning
I know
But I was
You know I was going to try and say it at the same time,
but you said Brazil a lot cooler than I would.
Brazil, so yeah.
Are you from Brazil?
Yeah, I'm from Brazil, yes.
Lovely.
You'll be back in the team?
Yeah, I'll be.
We'll be playing on Monday.
So, yeah.
Love football.
And New Zealand.
Football is massive.
I mean, massive in New Zealand now after last night,
but massive in Brazil, right, that we love football.
Yes, we love football.
We grew up just watching and playing, yeah.
Yeah, and you've got a carnival with 2 million people there in Brazil,
a very impressive country.
And if you could do us a favour, in Portuguese,
could you introduce the next song for us?
What are we doing, Joel?
Macklemore These Days.
Macklemore These Days.
Hand it over to you, Claudia.
Thank you.
Beautiful language.
It is the hits. You got
John Owen Benn.
The hits. The John Owen Benn Podcast.
Bonnie Jansen, New Zealand Herald Sports
Journalist. What a night.
Oh, I'm just
can't even believe it. I'm sitting.
Did you go to the game?
Yeah, I was there
I was there working
But it was just amazing
Amazing
I've never witnessed anything like it
It looked like the stadium just
Started to convulse when that goal went in
Yeah
The fans had some hope
Like throughout the match
We were dominating the game
And then when we scored
It was like, okay, this is actually happening.
We could cause a massive upset here.
Yeah, because football is one of those games that you can beat teams
who are better than you.
But the TAB odds, I think, were like $12 for the football ferns to win.
They're 12th in the world, Norway.
I mean, this is a huge upset.
Yeah, it's huge. I mean,
I'm an optimistic person, but even I was going into the match thinking we were going to lose
3-0 and that would be a good result. I think we're all just like, it's nice to have it in
New Zealand. Yeah, but incredible. Our first ever victory. We've been to five World Cups,
the football fans, but the first ever victory in front of a sellout crowd.
I mean, it's incredible.
Yeah, it's going to change football.
In New Zealand,
I'm pretty confident of that.
It was,
even to the players,
it just means so much for them
and gives them a confidence boost
for the rest of the tournament now.
Now, the good thing is about
having never won any games
any previous tournaments.
We're already doing better
than we expected.
So anything from here on is...
But we must have a chance now of going through the next round.
Yeah, well, we're now talking like a top-of-the-group finish,
which means they'll play their Round of 16 match in Auckland,
and that's certainly possible, knowing who we've got next.
But I think Key's going to be not getting too complacent
after that historic win.
So who are the other teams in the pool?
We've got the Philippines next,
and they're the bottom-ranked team in the group.
However, we only...
Easy, walk over.
Walk over to victory.
On to the next one.
We only beat them 2-1 last year,
so it's not a walk in the park.
And then we've got Switzerland, who are ranked 20 in the world.
But again, we beat 12 in the world.
The Swiss, they're too neutral.
Another walk over.
What was it like last night?
Because it was tense watching on the screens, but being there,
and then they added nine minutes of extra time to the end of the game,
and you're like, oh, jeez, just hold on,
just hold on.
Yeah, well, the new VAR system, they add on the proper extra time,
and when Rhea Percival missed that penalty, which is redundant,
we're not talking about that.
No, she played awesome.
She played like, oh, she was one of the best out there, I thought.
Yeah, she was by far the best player.
So, yeah, that nine minutes of extra time we were holding on,
but we got the job done.
The VAR system, which we're all familiar with.
Well, I'll just get you to explain.
No, why don't you explain it, Jono?
You know, see if you've got a good handle on it.
No, if I do it, it sounds like it's mansplaining.
Oh, okay.
We'll get Bonnie to explain.
Yeah, okay, right.
The VAR, they walked it back in the VAR room,
but usually the signal when they're going to overturn something
is when the referee will run over to the side of the pitch
and watch the screen, and then you know, okay,
they're going to give you what you want.
Ah, the old VAR system, which we know and love.
Are all EFERNs games in New Zealand?
And then obviously when they get to the finals,
the semis and the big finals, they're played in Australia?
How does that work?
Yes.
So the round of 16 match, if they get there in the quarterfinals,
will both be in New Zealand.
But then, yes, the grand finals in Australia.
But New Zealand have one semifinal.
All right.
Well, we'll be watching them in the final in Australia.
It's all done and dusted.
Bonnie Jansen, New Zealand Herald sports journalist.
Thank you very much.
Thank you.
Incredible moment.
Well done, the football ferns.
Now, every household that you live in,
after a while you figure out what the bugbear or the bane of that house is,
isn't it? Like whether you've been in a flat or you've out what the bugbear or the bane of that house is, isn't it?
Like whether you've been in a flat or you've moved into your first home,
eventually there's one thing that starts bugging you about the house.
And Oscar, my son, I've seen before, he's obsessed with basketball.
So we've got a basketball hoop, but it's by the kitchen.
And the kitchen's got a whole lot of windows on it.
So when he's shooting the basketball and he's off and it bounces off the rim,
it'll go bang!
Smash against the window.
Like these windows,
they've been through more stress
than the bloody windows in the new crane.
They are holding on for dear life.
Oh, so he hasn't never broken one?
Never broken it.
But it's teetering.
Like the windows,
they're like,
there's not much more I can do, buddy.
I can't take much more of this. It has three years of just relentless banging every time we're always like
we say the same thing every time we don't move the hoop we don't try and adjust
the setting but and i was thinking there's probably not one professional ball based athlete
who hasn't smashed a window yeah on way to becoming, hitting the big leagues.
So whenever he's playing for the bloody Los Angeles Leopards
or whatever they're called in the basketball tournament, Ben,
that's when this will pay dividends.
I do remember many times playing sport in the backyard at home,
various houses that we lived in, breaking so many windows.
And it's always just having to go in.
You normally go in.
Parents know.
But I remember one time my dad was out with i am with my stepbrother we're playing cricket i had a beautiful beautiful off
drive everyone glory shot we all watched it so it means nothing to anyone listening straight
through a window we're like oh you know and we got in trouble because we've broken a few windows
and so we didn't want to have that conversation when my dad got home to go, hey, sorry. So we're like, hey, we've got time.
We can go down to, you know, Iglesia and get a window.
But we only had bikes at the time.
This is ambitious.
So you were going to carry a pane of glass back
between two bikes?
Yeah, so this is, yeah.
So we measured it, the size of the window.
We were like, cool.
And then we went down on our bikes.
I love the optimism of children.
I know.
And then we were like, cool.
We bought that out of our own money, bought the glass.
And we actually, for some reason, we're like, well, we shouldn't really bike back.
So we stupidly left our bikes there.
We're like, why don't we take our bikes?
And we carried this plate of glass for ages.
It took us about 40 minutes to get all the way home.
So the bikes were back at the glass.
It really was.
If we were the Ocean's Eleven team, we would have been kicked out.
George Clooney would have gone, mate, you haven't thought this one through.
And we got it back inside.
We measured it up.
We were like, this is great.
It all fits.
And we put it back down.
And then my stepbrother stood off the stool as he stood and stood straight on the glass.
And then that went everywhere as well.
And you're like, oh.
Just as they pulled up the driveway.
How were you planning on unseating the glass?
I don't know.
I don't think we were going to go, oh, the wall window fell out
and it just landed like.
But it didn't break.
It's a miracle.
It's a miracle.
We should call someone
to put it in though.
The hits.
The Jono and Ben podcast.
Jusor Taylor
has come on in there.
She said something's pretty exciting
you want to tell us about.
You're a little bit flustered.
What's going on, mate?
Yeah, sorry.
Just trying to find a little plug
For my headphones
But no
Big news
Yeah
So what's the movie
Everyone's talking about at the moment?
Barbie
Yes obviously
Yeah Barbie movie
And who's the lead actress
In that movie?
Margot Robbie
Yes
Yeah
And obviously you know I'm Aussie
So I have a few connections down under
Yeah
Pulled some strings
And we are chatting To the Margot Robbie on Monday.
Oh, wow.
Awesome.
Massive, eh?
That's cool.
You've pulled more than a few strings, mate.
You've yanked a rope.
I know.
And honestly, I don't think I get paid enough for these kind of strings I'm pulling, eh?
And so with that, I begged and begged to get her to record a little.
Did you beg on about your pay to her or not?
No, no, no.
I kept it really professional.
I didn't want to lose it.
Margot, mate, I don't get paid enough to talk to you.
Organise this rubbish.
And I begged her people to get her to record a little tease for our show.
Just, yeah, to build the excitement for us all awesome hey it's marco
robbie here and i'll be speaking to john on ban about all things barbie tune in monday morning
on the head oh hey that's awesome all right she sounds like she's on painkillers well all the
press she's been doing probably exhausted mate okay be exhausted, mate. Okay, very cool.
Margot Robbie, so that's what Monday would be playing on the Hits?
Yeah, you're welcome.
Yes, indeed.
Connor and Hayley.
Connor representing the South, Hayley the North.
They work for the Hits.
They're so competitive, they refuse to live in the same island as each other. We get them on every week to spout off propaganda about either island,
and then we decide who's having the best weekend this weekend.
A lot of football going on, Ben Boyce, across the weekend.
Amazing scenes last night.
Oh, how good was it, the football ferns as well.
But let's get to a jona, as I like to call them, but between the two,
that means you can get to pick which one we go to.
All right, the Spanish Jona.
Lovely to have you on.
Hola.
Hola, guys.
Hola, guys.
Hola to you.
Hola to you.
What's going on in Christchurch in the South Island this week, Jona?
Well, first and foremost, if you're lucky enough to maybe not have work today
or you have some time around 10 a.m. in Nelson,
get along to Drew Yoga classes with the lovely Fiona.
What a way to start a day. What a way to start a day.
What a way to start a weekend.
And off the back of the school holidays,
I can imagine it was quite a stressful week.
Absolutely.
So get to Drew yoga today in Nelson.
Stretch the hammies with the lovely Fiona.
10 a.m.
So that's your morning sorted.
What else in the weekend?
Saturday, if you can get to Christchurch,
which is the first ever midwinter session or tuktahi.
And it's basically a celebration of all things,
food, wine, craft beer, live art.
Do you know what live art is?
I've never heard of that.
That sounds as boring to watch as live radio.
You know when people come into the studio
and I'm like, Jesus, this must be boring.
Just two people talking
at each other. I imagine just watching someone draw
on a canvas would be
the same. Yeah, I thought
that might have been the case. Maybe a portrait
of some, I don't know. That's 1pm
at Wolfbrook Arena
tomorrow. Look, I just want to tease a head.
I'm not a radio host, but I don't tease a head to next
week, right? I'm going on a wee roadie
around the South Island, okay? Queenstown, Wanaka, I'm going to T your head to next week, right? I'm going on a wee roadie around the South Island, okay?
Queenstown, Wanaka, I'm going to Tiano, Milford Sound,
and then I'm finishing off in the greatest place on planet Earth,
in my opinion, Gore.
So I'm going to have some good content for next week's
What's On on the Weekend, okay?
Oh, he's going to talk about next week.
We were worried about this week, Connor.
You know what that signals to me, the red flag,
is he's not happy with what he's brought to the table this week.
He's having to forecast a week ahead. Let's see what Hayley's got to me, the red flag, is he's not happy with what he's brought to the table this week. He's having to forecast a week ahead.
Yeah, well, let's see what Hayley's got to say in the North.
Hayley, good morning.
What's happening in the North Island this morning?
Oh, I'm feeling confident after that tease for next week.
I know.
I mean, when you start delving into Friday morning 10 a.m. Nelson yoga,
you know things are dire.
That pretty much says there's one thing happening in the South Island this weekend,
and it's the midwinter Christmas, watch someone paint a canvas Alright, alright, well what have you got to beat it?
Well, if you want more tools in one room than your high school reunion
We've got the Mega Tool Show at Auckland
Okay, love it, love it
Ben, that sounds like both of us, we would not be comfortable at the Mega Tool event.
No, but they'd be able to sell you anything.
They would.
They'd say, yeah, yeah, it'll come in handy lots,
and then you'll have thousands of dollars' worth of tools
that you won't know how to use.
Well, I know you do home renos on your place, Hayley.
You'd love the Mega Tool Expo.
I would, actually.
I considered flying up for it.
I genuinely, yeah.
I've got my own toolkit and everything. Okay, so
the Tool Expo in Auckland.
Yeah, we've also got FIFA Women's World
Cup. No surprises there, but Sky
Stadium tonight, we've got Spain
versus Costa Rica.
First game kicked off yesterday, our Kiwis
won against Norway 1-0
as well, so it's going to be a good game
to watch tonight. And then
sticking to the midwinter Christmas theme,
we've got Greytown. You can
drive around looking at pimped out letter
boxes in the theme of Christmas.
It's like the Christmas
lights on the streets, except even the
lazy neighbours have no excuse not to decorate
the letter box. Okay, so we've got
yoga, letter boxes,
people
painting stuff
You can't remember can you
I'm going to give it to the North Island
I think everyone knows the North Island are going to win it this week
Well done Hayley
Thanks guys
Watch out next week Hayley
