Thanks to Challenge, putting the service back into service stations.
I got called out for doing something by my wife,
and it's something she's like, you always do this.
And I brought Producer Taylor in to get her opinion as well.
But last night we were...
Do you want Producer Taylor to agree with you?
No, I just want to know.
And I'm sure you're probably in the same situation in the story,
because it happens a wee bit.
Last night we were going out to watch the football ferns my wife uh came back from work
she was getting ready really quickly and as she got ready she was like and i was like stress
like i've got to get there watch the game it's getting a bit late she's like oh how's my hair
and i says look all right and i said yeah it's good and she's like you didn't even look up
you didn't even look up from your phone you just said yeah it looks good and you didn't look up and
i said well what's i mean in that situation i'm like yeah it looks good i'm just giving you the
moral support that you need to get out the door and but do you actually want to know my opinion
in that situation yes absolutely because i was like it didn't look good it didn't look good
like i looked at it and i was like it looked good maybe you're just like it looks good all the time
that could be the saving comment.
It's like when, you know, when they come out and go,
should I wear this or wear that?
I mean, yeah, that looks good.
I mean, do you want to know the opinion of your partner?
Absolutely.
God, the worst thing ever as well is when you go, oh, how do I look?
Yeah, fine.
Do not ever give fine as a answer.
Oh, really?
Don't say fine?
That is the worst thing ever.
Just as bad as what you've said.
Yeah, it looks good without even looking at it.
What if we come back with a little bit shabby?
You're like, how honest do you want to be?
Yeah.
Because it can't be.
Yeah.
We understand there's a field you want to play in.
Yeah.
You're like, oh, jeez.
I might go by myself.
It doesn't get to that level.
Yeah, no.
Can you keep 20 metres behind? And that's not going get to that level. Yeah, no. Can you keep 20 minutes behind?
And that's not going to happen.
Yeah.
No, definitely.
Just look up and go, yeah, you know what?
Even just a bit of like more than just two words as well.
Why does it look good?
Yeah, that looks really good because I like what you've done with your friend.
Yeah.
It did look good.
You didn't even look up to see if it did.
But I knew.
I knew.
I could do it.
We've been together, so I knew it looked good.
And I knew that when the football ferns were starting.
You've been telling me for 20 years my hair looks good too.
This is why she doesn't believe you.
I realised he was bald the other day.
She looked up at my phone.
I'm like, oh, my God.
Okay.
So good?
Noted?
Yeah.
Okay.
Opinion?
I'll pass it on.
Please do.
The Hits.
The Jono and Ben podcast.
Heartbreaking loss last night against the Philippines.
A bit of an upset for the Philippines to win at a packed Wellington stadium last night.
And we've got our football reporter from the New Zealand Herald, Bonnie Jansen, this morning.
Good morning.
Hello.
Who do I have to sleep with round here to get that call reversed?
Oh, I know.
I know. I know.
Wasn't that heartbreaking?
It was.
I mean, when you look at it this morning,
there's lots of stills around,
and I feel like we've all overanalyzed that photo that's going around.
But it was like if Hannah Wilkinson's feet
was behind the other player,
or like her arms were behind the other player.
It was just, yeah, but anyway, that's the rules.
Yeah, I mean, to be fair,
I didn't even know it was a rule
because you barely ever see something like that.
But yeah, head and shoulder just slightly in front of the player,
which seems like a joke, to be honest.
What are we thinking? Corruption? Match fixing?
Where are we at? Where are we at, New Zealand?
Oh, goodness, I don't know.
It's just one of those calls that happens in sport
and makes for the game on Sunday to be more exciting.
You're right, Jono.
Yeah, exactly.
But the players said last night, you know,
that that shouldn't have been a game-changing moment.
They should have been putting away earlier chances
and chances after that.
You know, it wasn't a performance they were happy with
and I don't think many people were happy with.
So they'd better come out firing against Switzerland on Sunday.
So it is a big game on Sunday.
There's still a really good chance of them making the next round of 16 teams.
And I know mathematically if we lose, there is still a chance.
But really, we just want to win this game on Sunday.
Yeah, we need to win it now.
We can still get through if we draw depending on other results and
things like that. But yeah, it's a must win and it would be nice to see some goals.
Now, what do we know about Switzerland? Very neutral country. They export a lot of machinery
and pharmaceutical products. What else do we know?
What about football?
Yeah, great, great stuff. What about when it comes to football as well?
Yeah, what are we thinking?
Yeah, I think they're 21 in the world,
so they're not far off New Zealand.
They did beat the Philippines 2-0,
who we obviously lost to last night,
and then they just drew with Norway,
who we beat last night.
But they've got some really great players
who play in the English Premier League,
and yeah, we can't take them lightly, that's for sure.
And a superstar of, I was watching the game last night,
and she didn't actually play in the game,
she was on the bench, but a superstar.
Is that like huge on social media,
bigger than Roger Federer when it comes to Switzerland,
the social media?
Yeah, is that Alicia Lehman? Yeah, the boys love her, I think.
Oh, classic Ben. Classic Boise.
I didn't know. This was on the commentary last night. They were talking about how she's
more popular than Roger Federer, who is an icon in Switzerland.
Did you make her more popular with a follow?
No, I haven't followed. No, I haven't.
Another fun thing about the Swiss?
Toblerone.
Toblerone, big export of the country
there. So it's really hard to pick
given we beat Norway, they've drawn with
Norway, but then they also beat the Philippines.
Could be anyone's game.
It could be and this is what we love about
World Cups, you know, these upsets and
now we go into the final round
and it's anyone's game, which is exciting.
It's just a shame that it's in New Zealand's group
that this is happening, but yeah, it's exciting nonetheless.
Is it going to be hard for the Ferns to pick themselves up
from that game, because obviously the high highs
of winning that first game, and then a game
that they wanted to win last night,
they probably should have won last night, and they didn't.
You know, is it going to be hard to pick themselves up
before Sunday, which is a quick turnaround.
It's been a real emotional rollercoaster
for them.
They were, you know,
they came crashing back down to earth
last night and yeah,
I mean, are they going to be able to?
I don't know,
but they're going to have to
if they want to make history
once again and get out.
But I think, yep,
Clint Covey, the head coach,
is going to have to go back to the drawing board
and really consider her line-up because last –
yeah, on Thursday it worked really well,
but last night it didn't work at all.
Well, this is when we really need to support the team.
It's all fine when you support them after a win.
This is when we bandy together, New Zealand.
And I had another really great question, but I forgot it.
Oh, yeah, worst-case scenario, New Zealand. And I had another really great question, but I forgot it.
Oh, yeah, worst case scenario, we lose.
What happens then?
We could still get out, but it comes down to, like,
the second or third tiebreaker,
and it will go down to our match between Norway and things like that.
But it would make it very tricky.
Yeah, because... Yeah, it's not possible.
If we draw, that could suffice if Norway beat the Philippines,
which is also on Sunday as well.
But let's not think about it.
Let's not think about it.
Let's just say on Sunday we need to beat Switzerland
and we'll be continuing to support the football ferns.
Exactly.
Good on you, Bonnie Jensen.
Appreciate your time, mate.
Thanks, mate.
The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast.
It was a heartbreaking loss for the Football Ferns
last night against the Philippines.
They had a goal disallowed there.
Looking at the replays,
I mean, controversially disallowed.
It would have evened things up in the game.
It felt like there was a single strand of hair
that might have been offside.
Yeah, exactly.
But that is the football, and the Philippines
shocked the world by beating the football Ferns.
Not cleared, though. The Philippines still there with it.
And it comes, and it's in!
The Philippines stun!
The huge crowd here,
and it's Serena Bolden!
Yeah, so the Philippines,
so that means that with their win last night,
the Football Ferns still have a chance of qualifying to the round of 16.
They've got a big game against Switzerland.
They need to win against Switzerland to guarantee qualification on Sunday.
A draw will also suffice if Norway beat the Philippines.
But let's not worry about that.
Let's just say win, Sunday, you're through,
and we're all behind them still.
But, jeez, it was tense and heartbreaking. i love being boys has been doing some digging uh into
the filipino team none of them born in the philippines i don't know that for sure no i
haven't been digging that no i haven't a mate said that was the case i haven't been able to verify
that whether it's true or not you keep putting it back on me i'm like well it doesn't matter
i want you to go to ancestry.com they all qualify i mean we've got players that play
it's look at the all blacks and other teams they're all from you know go to Ancestry.com. They all qualify. I mean, we've got players that play. Look at the All Blacks and other teams.
They're all from, you know.
It's easy to win when you field a whole bunch of people that aren't from the Philippines.
We're not saying that.
They played really well.
They did.
They played really well, particularly in that first half.
The Philippines were awesome.
They were incredible.
And that's the joy of the tournament, isn't it?
Anyone can win on the day, if I could phrase that, steal that cliche.
Now, Producer Joel, we wanted to do an angle on the Football World Cup where we're like,
let's talk to some parents of the players. Proud parents.
Proud parents, because no doubt they are.
And the amount of commitment
it took during the younger
years to get their kids to the point
where they're representing the national side.
Producer Joel comes in, he's like, I've got the perfect
guest. He's got a relative, your godmother
is the mother of one of the players.
Yes, yes. One of my
long-time family friends.
And I thought, look, I'll bring
an awesome guest to the show.
He hasn't managed to do that, though. No, look, we had it teed up,
but for some reason, the phone lines,
we might have to get the team down and sort these out
because the phone lines are jamming up at the moment. Too many
callers coming through. So we can't get through to
the mother. Who's she the
mother of? Amalia Stamets, ets a great oh one of the big guns yeah great yeah right well it would have been
lovely to talk to her well i was i was kind of there grew up alongside her as well so if you
want my take what it's like to sacrifice being a friend of the family as well is that it's not
really i mean it's lovely that you offered that but not quite what i mean there's a it's a story
probably in every household across.
You said, please don't tell me you've just,
she's just come through.
We'll try and get her on very shortly.
Producer Joel, typical of Joel,
he'll come through at the last minute.
But every household in the country
would have a story of the commitment of parents
having to drop, because I started weightlifting.
I went to a weightlifting
tournament in new plymouth we drove six hours to discover the lifting part of weightlifting i
wasn't too good at and my parents are like jeez we've wasted an entire weekend at the weightlifting
nats here wow i was like i'm gonna be a weightlifter and i tricked them into thinking that uh
my tennis prowess was a lot better than it actually was.
And it's hard when you're an only child growing up, which I was.
You've got no one else to compare yourself to.
All you're doing is hitting a ball against a wall.
You're like, well, I'm doing pretty well at beating myself off.
Yeah, well, okay, so we want to know,
so obviously the Football Ferns parents, they're successful,
but what about more people like your parents?
Yeah, the ones when the commitment didn't pay off.
I mean, your mum, Jenny Boyce.
Oh, see, she watched a lot of cricket games.
Saturday, all day Saturday, all day Sunday.
I mean, I got to rep level in the wider upper, but never really, you know,
like I never made any money out of the sport, never went on to big things.
Those are years.
You didn't score a lucrative contract at the IPL, did you?
No. Those are years that Jenny Boyce will never get back.
The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast.
We are proud of the football ferns.
They're doing so well.
They've captured the hearts and the imaginations of all the fans in New Zealand.
And also their parents must be so proud.
They would, yeah.
And these are parents who they would have dropped off at trainings.
Imagine the amount of Saturday mornings, 7 o'clock out there, freezing in the blistery conditions.
It's all paying off now, you know, the national side.
But for 99% of parents, that commitment never pays off.
No.
Okay?
Kids, if you're listening now, you're probably not going to make it.
Why?
Probably not.
There's a handful that will.
I'm an example of this.
Again, another sport that I made my poor parents.
Basketball.
Right.
I've spent an entire season sitting on the bench of the basketball team.
I was a vibes guy.
Okay.
I was good at patting bottoms.
You know, good on you guys.
Keep it up.
I'd pat bottoms.
Yeah.
High fives.
Have towels.
We are handing towels and stuff to the good players.
End of the season, coaches, I'd go and take a couple of free throws.
Took two free throws.
One over the back of the backboard.
He's all right.
Sit back down, Pryor.
You're a vibes guy.
Pretty much.
You're a good vibes guy.
Keep that up.
Keep the vibes up.
Keep him around, man.
He's good for the vibes.
Yeah, you just explained the amount of hours you made poor Jeannie your mom sit.
Oh, yeah.
So then what's cricket games? Well, Dad ended up having to umpire many cricket games as
well i mean that's that's that's not how he wanted to spend his saturdays and sundays no wendy you're
on from christchurch how are you this morning hi yes bloody good to have you on now this wasn't you
you were doing the ferrying around yes i've got um six younger siblings. Oh wow. So we had, I think about four of them played
soccer. So I was kind of in charge of it. Two of them played up to four games on a Saturday.
Up to four games? Yeah, they were on like under 16, under 18, but then men's and men's.
It was the race between games of chucking them in the car
and then race to the next game.
And so this was all on you.
How many hours on a Saturday were you spending doing this?
Probably at least eight.
Yeah, right.
Now please tell me your brothers Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Nah.
One had a knee injury and that stuff, that one,
and the other one just plays rugby now.
Yeah.
There you go.
So this is the level of commitment
that everyone across the country is doing over the weekend.
Producer Taylor, you were saying you were obsessed with dance
when you were a child.
Yes, so probably from the age of three to about 21,
I was dancing full-time straight after school,
and my dad would take me every single day after school.
And my dance school wasn't close. It was like 25
minute drive away from school.
So yeah, big commitment.
I'm in that boat now. Poppy, my daughter
loves dance. I said we should start a show
Dance Dads.
Just dad sitting in the car waiting.
Bloody 15 minutes late.
Dragging on. Some good text coming through
on 4487 as well when the commitment
didn't play off.
I made my parents buy me a pony
I thought I wanted
to get into equestrian
about a month later
I realised equestrian
wasn't the sport for me
and they still got the pony
still had me to feed the pony
that's a huge commitment
huge commitment
I feel like maybe
there should have been
some sort of trial
with the thing before
can't I just buy a pony
another great text here.
I made my parents buy me a very expensive guitar.
I had one lesson, realised I was no good, and I gave up.
The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast.
You discovered something in your attic when you were clearing out,
cleaning out your closet like Eminem did.
You did that over the weekend, didn't you?
Yeah, an old box.
It was the iconic Woman's Weekly birthday cake book.
Yeah, it brings back so many memories.
A lot of texts and calls and even messages on social of people going,
oh, I remember having the ratty ratty, the duck or the whatever they had
back in the day at a birthday party.
And after the show yesterday, we gave your mum Jenny Boyce a call.
Now, Jenny made many a cake out of this book.
She does.
Except she had PTSD. So this is Jenny Boyce a call. Now Jenny made many a cake out of this book. She does. Except she had PTSD. So this is Jenny Boyce yesterday.
Hello?
Hello? Hello mum, it's your son here.
Hello. And it's your radio son
Jono here Jenny. Oh hello, hello, hello. How lovely
to hear from you.
What a nice surprise.
Now, we're looking at the iconic Women's Weekly Children's Birthday Cakebook
and we want to put in some requests
for our birthdays coming up.
You want to whip up?
I don't want to make that train ever again.
Oh, did you make the train?
I kept saying that you hadn't made the train.
Did you make it?
Yeah, I think it was birthday number four. Oh, see, I don't remember that. You besmirched the good name
of Jenny saying she refused to make the train. Yeah. How long did it take you to make the
train? Yeah, well, it's a good day's effort. Yeah, it's almost as long as it is to make
a real train. Very intricate design, isn't it? Now, what was your favourite creation you made out of the book there, Jen?
Oh, I think I always wanted to make that doll, you know, with the skirt.
I did that once.
You did that for my sister, I think.
The Barbie one.
Not for you, Ben.
Not for you, Ben.
It was a Barbie doll.
I'd happily take that one.
It looks like a delicious cake, and Barbie's very in right now.
You could have made it.
It was in the girls' section of the book, mate.
Yeah, boys' cakes cakes and girls cakes.
I do remember you making the cricket
pitch for me with the coconut
green and the little
chocolate fingers around the outside.
Oh, Jenny, what would you say if
we were going to make every cake
out of that book? Oh, goodness.
I would think that that would be quite
a task. Are we?
How many cakes are in there?
I think there's 100, 106 if you count some.
There's some ice cream cakes I've forgotten about too.
Hey, Jenny, you could do a cake for us?
Of course I would.
There's only one, no.
I'm just looking at the candle cake.
A cake made into a candle.
Very interesting shape
I don't want to make that one
I won't make that one
I don't want you to make that one either
I did go to a party with the candle cake
just recently wasn't it
can't remember having to put batteries in it
happy baking
thanks Jenny
love you mum bye
love you bye pride of the north Jenny Boyce there Okay. Well, happy baking. Thanks, Jenny. Love you, Mum. Bye.
Love you.
Bye.
There we go.
Pride of the North, Jenny Boyce there.
But yeah, 106 cakes.
Every cake in the book.
This is what we want to do.
But first of all, we want to know if it's achievable.
It's not achievable.
I mean... It depends what time limit you put on it.
Everything's achievable if you dedicate time to it.
So maybe you are a baker. Can you pull. Everything's achievable if you dedicate time to it. So if you, maybe you are a baker,
can you pull this off?
Let's say over a two to three day period.
0800 The Hits,
we'll get some professional advice here,
industry advice,
because if it's too hard,
we'll give up now.
Okay.
We don't like a challenge.
We're not in that stage of life.
We want things to be easy.
The Hits,
the Jono and Ben podcast.
We had a meeting after the show yesterday, Ben,
with Craig, our wonderful Australian consultant.
And there was a point in the meeting where I wrapped it up
and I said, oh, hey, great.
He'd fired out a lot of great ideas, a lot of great ideas.
And I was like, that's a week's worth of great ideas there.
Thanks, Craig.
And he's like, oh, you're wrapping me up well you did a little bit more through your thing you went
oh well thanks very much for that craig that's great stuff this is over zoom by the way this
isn't uh yeah so uh he's definitely wrapping him up like craig's run he runs the meeting i don't
know why you study with oh thanks very much craig that's great stuff you know like like a wrap-up
yeah and he was like i've actually got another three ideas to go through.
And I was like, oh, sorry, I didn't, you know.
Okay, we'll sit through those.
And then after each idea, he's like, have you got time for another one, John?
And I felt like I was being accused of prematurely wrapping up the meeting.
Well, you don't like meetings.
Let's be honest.
No.
You're not a big fan.
I do lose focus in them after sort of five minutes.
And sometimes you can end up having a meeting about nothing.
You know, there's a lot of wasted time in workplaces.
Not to say that our meetings are about nothing, Ben.
Always productive, always going somewhere, always focused.
But I realise, am I just an impatient, annoying human being who's always got something else to do, somewhere else to be,
and rushing people along?
You're the same.
You're the same.
We went to a concert on Friday night.
We watched Robinson play.
Robinson hadn't even finished the song.
Ben started clapping.
The drummer saw it, and he gave you a nod.
I thought that was the end.
I was trying to get arousing.
It wasn't for a second that I was thinking that I wanted to finish. I just thought that was finished. I wanted to be like, yeah, that was the end I was trying to get arousing It wasn't like It wasn't for a second That I was thinking that
I wanted it to finish
I just thought that was finished
I wanted to be like
Yeah that was awesome
You could tell the drummer was like
Have you got something to be here
And we've all made that fatal mistake
At a concert
You never quite know when a song
If you're not fully familiar with
Ends
Yeah
And sometimes they've got the
And you just start going
And they've got another false You know they have a false ending or a
speech or you go to a show or something like that and then you're like then you're a bit gun shy
about when you come in next for a clap you're like i'm gonna have to wait for the other audience
members to leave one thing i've learned never lead a clap no always follow be be the sheep
and the clap yeah yeah i always lead a standing ovation as well. That's a brave soul who stands up at the end of a performance.
What I did like too the other night when they were doing the clap to the rhythm of the song,
which is great.
It was fun.
But then I'm always like, is this the whole song?
Or is this a bit of a song?
Or we just keep going, you know?
When do you pull out of the clap?
Yeah, and it's fun.
But then I'm like 30, 40 seconds into that,
I'm like, I've had my fun with the clapping.
I'm probably done with that now, but I don't want to stop.
Like I've stopped enjoying the song.
There was a stage there where the wonderful Robinson
was doing a part of her song.
And then handing the mic out to the audience,
to specific people.
And I was like, dear sweet Lord Jesus,
do not put that microphone in front of my face.
You know, because these people were singing great.
And I was kind of, I think we had created a safe distance
between us and the stage where she couldn't reach out.
