Starting point is 00:00:00 The Hits with the Jono and Ben podcast. Thanks to Challenge, putting the service back into service stations. You mentioned earlier today it was December 11th was World Breakup Day. Most people breaking up on this day. Just looking a little bit more research, a lot of it has to do with, well, 50% of people who break up said pressure to invite people they're dating to holiday gatherings is a big one. Another big one is also gift giving as well well you don't want to buy them a present
Starting point is 00:00:28 especially if they've got expensive taste you're like the stress around that you're worth a necklace yeah so watch out today if you're in a relationship today awkward if you're driving in the car with your partner it could be the day yeah you're right yeah um so i am filling in for jono this week um and i've really railroaded you. I've just written down Ben Surprise. Yeah. That's all I know is just I'm going to be surprised right now. Always makes me nervous.
Starting point is 00:00:51 But then the hits is normally so loving and family friendly, but then you've come along here with your big ideas, and I don't know where we're going. So this, I actually have, this is quite confrontational for me. I have started getting gray hairs okay and i have very dark hair just dark brown hair yeah so it's very obvious so i i've made this deal with my husband i was like if you see a gray hair you have to pull it out so i've been plucking plucking um but he refuses to do it he refuses to get rid of my gray hairs um and so i know that women are supposed
Starting point is 00:01:27 to age gracefully um but then society doesn't lend a hand to us doing that so you're right especially this time of the year like there's people are getting their nails done you're wanting to look your best for christmas when you go home to see the rallies and they're like oh you look like you put on a bit of weight so So everyone's, especially women, put a bit of pressure on themselves to look good. Yeah, it's kind of funny because, you know, like the George Clooney sort of salt and pepper look. It's kind of like, it's revered almost when a dude,
Starting point is 00:01:55 when it comes to females. But sadly, it doesn't seem to be. Silver Fox. Yeah, right. Older men are given a lot more grace. Yeah. I feel like allowed to age more than maybe women. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:08 I get what you're saying. I get what you're saying. But also at the same time, while I'm saying I get what you're saying, I don't know what that means. Where are you leading me? Where the heck are you leading me? And now I'm suddenly subcontracted.
Starting point is 00:02:18 Have I even got that many grays in my hair? Have I? No, it's not so much the grays. I was just like, you say you get it, but I don't know if you do. So I was like, maybe's not so much the grades. I was just like, you say you get it, but I don't know if you do. So I was like, maybe this week since I'm here. What are you doing? And Jono's not here to say no.
Starting point is 00:02:32 I thought maybe this week we could get you to do some of these procedures that women go through to preserve their age. Okay. To look good for Christmas. Right. And some of these are things maybe we do on a daily basis. Jesus, Joel's cracking up right now. What am I, what do you want me to do? Here's where I need
Starting point is 00:02:52 a bit of assistance. So, we do actually have a procedure booked for you this week. Don't say procedure, procedure sounds like a... However, I want to do something every single day with you. Every single day? Jeez, how haggard am I? And so so one procedure has been booked and it is a procedure.
Starting point is 00:03:09 However, I want people to give us a call. Oh, 800 the hits. Especially women. Is there something that you get done? And it doesn't have to be too invasive or just something on the daily that you think women go through that Ben needs to go through
Starting point is 00:03:24 and realise what it is to be a woman. women go through that Ben needs to go through and realise what it is to be a woman When are you going to tell me what this thing is? When are we going to reveal it producer Joel? I don't know but I'd be keen to suggest one for Ben as well You know the thing where you put the pads in your stomach and you like stimulate pregnancy, the pain of it
Starting point is 00:03:40 I feel like that would be great for Ben as well That can't work The hits, the Jono and Ben podcast So we've got Megan pain of it i feel like that'd be great for ben as well okay all right the hits the jonathan ben podcast so we've got megan uh well regrettably filling in for jonah this week because she has been taunting me about a procedure it's scheduled in my calendar for wednesday and all weekend i'm like i told the family i was like i've got a procedure with it what's going on i'm i don't know and this was my daughter indy and my wife Amanda talking about it. So what do we think it could be?
Starting point is 00:04:08 Something that I need? Maybe plastic surgery. I was joking. I was joking. You need a lobotomy. I don't know what that is. Or how about Botox? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:19 What do you keep saying something about? Anyway. Okay, so what are the conditions, though? No filler. No filler? My birthday's on Wednesday, so try not to come home, like, looking goofy and be embarrassing, okay? Yeah, I know, because we're going out for dinner Wednesday, okay, for your birthday. You're getting your ears pinned.
Starting point is 00:04:36 So, anyway, now I'm feeling pretty self-conscious. So how about I find out what it is tomorrow on the radio, and then I talk to you about it at night, and then we come back 24 hours later and decide if I'm going to do it. Okay, cool. You act like there's a choice. This is already booked in. It's happening. That was risky business asking your family, though.
Starting point is 00:04:56 It was. It really was a humbling experience, wasn't it? What things do I need? They're like, well, here's the list. So basically you're going to have a week of beauty regimes, beauty treatments that women go through, especially this time of year. Everyone's getting their nails done. Everyone's wanting to look their best as they go home for Christmas.
Starting point is 00:05:17 I'll get my nails done. I'll have to get my nails done. We want to know if you have any ideas on what we can do for Ben this week, apart from his one procedure that is definitely booked in. Okay. Caroline, good morning. What's your idea for Ben? Caroline?
Starting point is 00:05:32 Caroline. Oh, sorry. It's all right. I had bikini wax. Is that from a year? You know, beach, looking glamorous. None of those things. Listen to the nervous laugh.
Starting point is 00:05:43 Oh, jeez. A bikini wax. Do you know, I've actually looked into laser for you, for a Brazilian, but I got told that a lot of places don't do it because it's too painful for men. Really? It's like a hot rubber band flick on the... Okay, can we cross that one off the list? I can confirm that is not your procedure that's happening. Okay, all right, here we go.
Starting point is 00:06:01 When are you telling me about this? You're liking this. You're enjoying this too much, aren't you? I am so into it. You're going to go through several things that women have to go through. Well, don't have to, but a lot of things that women go through in order to reverse the aging process or just look their best. Am I going to look better by the end of the week?
Starting point is 00:06:21 I was going to say, by Friday we could do an after photo and you might really enjoy some of them. It might be the new ben really okay producer joel's nodding would you do the procedure that we have booked for him i'll leave it to ben obviously i think it's probably more more ben's forte you know but would you would you like would you would you be happy to get it done probably not to be honest be honest. I'll say no. Oh, really? Not my thing. What does that mean? When are we going to find out? I love watching you squirm.
Starting point is 00:06:49 Oh, well, hey, great to have you a part of the show. Not regretting this at all. And if you do have any ideas, text us in. Let us know. Oh, 800 The Hits. The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast. You're a big Christmas fan. Massive fanatic.
Starting point is 00:07:04 I know that this time of the year is stressful for some people, but I'm into it. Everything about it. When was your Christmas tree up? The, I think it was the 1st of November. Wow.
Starting point is 00:07:14 Yeah. Ready to go. Well, there's Christmas tree shortage. I imagine yours is not a real. It's a fake one. We end up leaving it out for like a quarter of the year, three months.
Starting point is 00:07:22 So I don't think a real one would last. So we go the fake one. But is there a shortage of real Christmas trees? A shortage, which is kind of cool, people getting into the Christmas spirit. Yeah. There's actually an interesting thing. We're going to talk more about at eight o'clock this morning that you do, a Christmas tradition that I've honestly never heard anyone do, and it's to do with the Christmas tree.
Starting point is 00:07:41 We've done it since 2014. Yeah. Yeah, it's pretty cool. Well, no, we'll get more into that after eight o'clock this morning. Join us for that. We need to motivate you first. It's just another motivational Monday.
Starting point is 00:07:54 Two weeks till Christmas and everyone needs a bit of motivation, particularly it's, what, 6.20 in the morning, right? Yeah, and everything's weighing on your mind. Christmas presents, the food. We'll just talk about that with Producer Joel. Now, Megan's done all the Christmas shopping, not surprising. And Producer Joel, you've done?
Starting point is 00:08:10 If my girlfriend's listening, I've finished it. But if not, nothing yet. Well, normally we do the motivation. But hey, it's the end of the year. We're tired. We're getting to the end of the year. So we thought we'd find a place. And this is an iconic building.
Starting point is 00:08:22 If you've ever headed to the airport near Auckland, there's a side of the building, Main Freight, they always have a motivational phrase on an electronic sort of sign out there. I quite like looking forward to what they've got up there. They have really good motivational quotes. So we'll give them the call first thing in the morning and they can motivate us with their sign. Welcome to Main Freight, Catherine speaking.
Starting point is 00:08:43 Oh hey Catherine, it's Jono and Ben calling from the Hits. I'm here with Megan at the moment. How are you doing? Good, how are you? Good. Now, one of the best things we love about your building
Starting point is 00:08:51 is the motivational sign when you drive past on the way to the airport. Yep. Now, who comes up with this? Some of the team every day, yep. Every day? Is it like an email
Starting point is 00:09:03 that goes round and you're like, who's got an idea for the sign today? A little bit, I think. Do you know what today's one is? Because we're trying to motivate people today and we thought, what better way to do it than from the main freight electronic sign? No, I'm not sure what they've got on there today.
Starting point is 00:09:19 Does it literally change every single day? Every day, yep. What's your favourite one then if we don't know what's on today? What would be one of my favourite ones? What's your motivation? A big task here, you're trying to motivate the nation for another work week. Well, I say the nation, not everyone's listening, but let's not get into ratings. A couple of people at least.
Starting point is 00:09:40 At the moment, children are our biggest blessing. Children are our biggest blessing. Oh, that's lovely. And it's great for the hits too. That's wholesome. That's family entertainment. To be fair, I are our biggest blessing. Children are our biggest blessing. That's lovely. And it's great for the hits too. That's wholesome. That's family entertainment. To be fair, I don't feel motivated. Do you think that sometimes your children don't feel like your biggest blessing too, Megan?
Starting point is 00:09:54 Yeah, that's why we've got to keep reminding ourselves. Sometimes the children are the things that make my life twitch. But they are your biggest blessing. We see them as a guy some days, you know? Yes. Hey, well, that's lovely. Lovely motivation. Hey, one day, can we come up, well, can we get a message up on the sign if it gets approved?
Starting point is 00:10:12 If it gets approved, I'm sure. Not like listen to us. Like we could come up with a motivational message. Yep. Our own one and see if that was good enough for the team. Exactly. We could probably also do with a listen to us, I think. Yeah, we should.
Starting point is 00:10:27 Just a little plug at the end of it. Children sometimes don't feel like your biggest blessing, but also listen to us on the hits, maybe. But we'll work on that. We'll work on that. Hey, you have a wonderful week. You too. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:10:38 Nice talking to you. The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast. Megan Pupp is filling in for Jono, and you just mentioned casually when we were chatting the other day in the office about Rihanna, who we just played, that you hung out with her pretty much for a week. Yeah, so back in, this was 2012, her Unapologetic album,
Starting point is 00:10:55 she did a big promotion where she flew the world's media on a 777 for seven days, seven countries, seven concerts. It was an amazing experience. Preface it with that because I don't want to sound ungrateful. It's a wild schedule going to seven countries in seven days. What, and she performed each night?
Starting point is 00:11:14 She did, yeah. And then you were, like, you're just on the plane and you're gone. Literally. So you'd go to these, we went to Stockholm in Sweden, we went to Mexico City, Paris, London, you know, all around the world. But you go to the concert and some of the places we didn't even stay the night. So you'd get back on the plane afterwards. So it was a hectic schedule.
Starting point is 00:11:37 But the start of the flight. So we were under the impression that we would be hanging out with Rihanna. We'd go to her shows. You know, we'd all get on the plane together. We'd get some sort of little interview with her. I don't know. Because we got on the plane and she did a lap of the plane pouring everyone champagne.
Starting point is 00:11:55 Great. Amazing. Yeah. She was right in front of me. She poured me a champagne. I was like, this is going to be the trip of a lifetime. We're going to be besties. We're going to do each other's nails.
Starting point is 00:12:05 Yeah, exactly. And I didn't really see her again on the plane. I think she was on the plane right up the front. The only reason I got that impression was because in Paris, we waited on the tarmac for six hours. That sounds like a joke, but we waited. No food, no water, no nothing. Six hours.
Starting point is 00:12:24 And then paparazzi images came out of her going lingerie shopping in Paris. So this is the world's media. We're talking like the Perez Hiltons, the TMZs. Wow. And we were just waiting for Rihanna to go lingerie shopping.
Starting point is 00:12:39 But in saying that, when we got on the plane as well, we had these incredible goodie bags that had like a diamond necklace in it and had like headphones like rihanna branded like beats headphones it was an amazing goodie bag so again at the start all this promise and then we were like you know being tortured by sleeping on the floor of a like bunker type concert hall in berlin it was freezing. I mean, she's incredible.
Starting point is 00:13:07 Yeah, I still love her. What was it like seeing the same concert over and over again? If I'm honest, I did ditch it a couple of times because we were in Paris and we had no time in Paris. I was like, I'm going to ditch the concert and go sightseeing. But no, it was good. But after about the sixth time you're like oh okay same thing similar similar type of thing not jet setting around the world but Jason Derulo for
Starting point is 00:13:33 years ago when we were at the edge radio station he was at edge fest and so we kind of traveled it was jet star he was on the same jet star plane as us and going to different events but it was quite funny seeing him in concert he was incredible incredible. But the first concert he was like, the record company don't want me to play this song, but I'm going to do it for you tonight. And then he sang the song. Everyone went crazy. And the next day he was like, the record company don't want me.
Starting point is 00:13:53 I was like, hang on. I've been talking to your record company people. They're here with you. They haven't spoken to you. Surely they'd come up to him and go, hey, Jason, mate, you did it last night. You can't do it again. But good play, though, from him.
Starting point is 00:14:03 Yeah, you lose a little bit when you say the same thing over and over. It's like, you're the most incredible audience. It's like, you said it last night. You can't do it again. But good play, though, from him. Yeah, you lose a little bit when you say the same thing over and over. It's like, you're the most incredible audience. It's like, you said that last time. You said that to Christchurch last night. Now you're saying it to Wellington again. Pretty incredible. The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:17 So actually, it was the last time I was here filling in for you, Ben. I spoke about having to call the ambulance for my daughter. She's fine now. But calling the emergency service is a very stressful thing and you're like should i be doing this am i wasting someone's time well because i imagine you know because you're already stressed in a situation thinking about it but then you're like is this the appropriate place to call which in hindsight the ambulance very appropriate should have been done my daughter's fine but she she needed it this time i was like, I am absolutely taking the piss,
Starting point is 00:14:48 and I'm wasting people's time. Doing the pickup from daycare, I have a two-year-old and a one-year-old, and I don't know how this happened because the car isn't supposed to lock with the keys in it. So I put bags and keys, unloaded everything into the car, shut the door, and then proceeded to put my daughter in the car. And in the time it took for me to shut the door and get around the other side, my son had shut the door with him and his sister inside and lock it with the keys in the car. So you couldn't get in?
Starting point is 00:15:21 I couldn't get in. Now, he's two. So this was outside daycare, and he found the horn, which he thought was hilarious. So a scene that you don't really want to create a scene, he's creating more of a scene by tooting the horn. I was like, this will be fine. I'll be able to communicate to him.
Starting point is 00:15:37 Just press the button down here. Just get the key. It was not easy. He wasn't just tooting the horn. He was sitting on it. So it was like, beep. So we had all these parents coming out from daycare. We had the teachers.
Starting point is 00:15:51 The teachers brought out chocolate to show him through the window, being like, hey, do you want some chocolate? I'll push this button and it'll open the door. Oh, right, yeah. And initially it was funny. But after 45 minutes. 45 minutes? Not even joking.
Starting point is 00:16:04 It's like a hostage negotiation Yeah and he thought it was fun and then he started sweating and he started getting upset and my one year old's in her car seat and she's starting to get upset
Starting point is 00:16:13 and that's when I'm like okay no this isn't funny it's hot in there I need to get them out and I'm stressing and my So when do you think
Starting point is 00:16:23 about breaking a window? It had crossed my mind But we'd tried the coat hanger down the side But no one was experienced in breaking into cars But maybe we needed you there I can show you how it's done Okay good, maybe I need to know And my husband was at work
Starting point is 00:16:43 So at this point he's racing home to try and get the spare key, but he's still like a good 20 minutes away. And at the daycare, one of the dads is a volunteer firefighter, and he was like, honestly, I'm going to call the fire brigade because they'll come down. It's fine. He actually told me. Let's create more of a scene. Yeah, it happens.
Starting point is 00:17:01 They reckon they go to a call out twice a week having to unlock kids out of a car. And they said, honestly, if you find yourself in that scenario, please call them because they're quite happy to help and they have the tools. They don't need to break your window. They have the tools to do it. But my husband, we could hear the sirens of the fire brigade coming.
Starting point is 00:17:21 I don't know why they needed the sirens. Yeah. And my husband turns up and unlocks the door just before the fire brigade coming. I don't know why they needed the sirens. Yeah. And he, my husband turns up and unlocks the door just before the fire engine gets there. They arrive, sirens jumping off the truck
Starting point is 00:17:30 ready to go. Which is worse because I'm like, now I have wasted your time and you should have, like, my husband. It's almost worse
Starting point is 00:17:36 locking the kids back in the car just so they look like they've done something. Yeah. And I already feel, I feel terrible, right? And my husband's like, just for the record,
Starting point is 00:17:43 I never put the keys in there before I get in there myself. Thanks, Andrew. Thank you for that. Don't need that right now. Awesome. All right, let's make Megan feel better this morning. Your stories are being locked out. Have you locked yourself out of something?
Starting point is 00:17:56 Have you locked your kids inside something? The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast. So relived very well. It would have been traumatic at the time. At least you can talk about it now. I can laugh about it now. My son locked him and his one-year-old sister in the car for 45 minutes outside their daycare as he proceeded to toot the horn and let everyone know about the drama that was happening.
Starting point is 00:18:18 My mate, he got locked out of a hotel in his room and he had no clothes on, went to the toilet in the middle of the night and did the thing where you're kind of like a bit disorientated and kind of ended up in the hallway, not the bathroom. And then could not get back in. And yeah, he said that was a very awkward walk to the elevator. And luckily there was like a chair outside the elevator with a cushion. So he was like, I'll grab that and cover. And then riding the elevator going, please, please, no one else get in the elevator. Got down to reception. Sort of poked his head out the elevator window.
Starting point is 00:18:53 Help, help. And then no one was there. So he had to walk up to it. And then they were just kind of like, okay, lock yourself out. Now, I think they've seen a lot of that before. Probably seen it, for sure. Probably seen a lot of things. Yeah. So Katie, apparently she got locked out. Katie, I think they've seen a lot of that before. Probably seen it, for sure. Probably seen a lot of things. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:05 So, Katie, apparently she got locked out. Katie, what happened to you? Oh, mate, I was quite young and a bit foolish, and I boosted my calculus exam without my scientific calculator. So I had to turn back and see if I could get into the house, but no one was home, unfortunately. So you needed this calculator, so you're like, damn, I can't. Well, calculus, I imagine that's quite a big thing, a calculator.
Starting point is 00:19:32 It needs that one, eh? Yeah. Can't pull those answers out. Yeah, but the only window open was the bunny toilet, which was unfortunate, but I thought I'd give it a nudge. How big's the window situation? How high? Talk us through it. Mate if you look at your wrist and to your fingertips to your elbow back in the days and real high up big drainage old old-fashioned house yeah I skimmed up that drain like I was a
Starting point is 00:20:00 teenager which I was. We can only dream of doing that now, right? Mate, I look at this dunny toilet window thinking, I can't believe I fitted through that hole. I've just done a measurement, fingertips to elbow on my body, and I'm like, oh, I don't think so. I'm not going to go there with you, Megan. But all right, but you did it. You're a teenager.
Starting point is 00:20:21 You did it through, and all good? No, no, it went a bit bad actually because I got halfway through the window before my sense of ability to think kicked in and I didn't realise gravity was so strong. So I skimmed my way down and I had half my body through the window and I thought I could hold it up with my arms
Starting point is 00:20:42 either side of the wall. But that doesn't work either. So eventually I came screaming down and took a big knock to the side of the head, narrowly avoiding the fluffed feces that was there earlier. And sort of boosting out the door with my calculator. So you pretty much ended up in the toilet? I took a chip to the side of the head, yeah, but I didn't get a face full, so that was good.
Starting point is 00:21:08 And how did you go on the exam? Well, I had a good excuse for failing, I tell you. Probably concussed at the time, but yeah, it wasn't my best effort, I will say that, but I'm doing alright now. Oh, so good. The Hits, the Jono and Ben podcast.
Starting point is 00:21:24 I don't know if you've had this from time to time when you have a conversation that's very innocent and then to anyone listening it sounds incredibly dodgy okay but it happened to me to me uh last week i was doing a little bit of filming on a beach and i was wearing that the lady who was in charge of the wardrobe was like oh could you put this on it was one of those am i wearing pajamas or am i going to a festival type outfits you know matching board shorts and the shirt you know the combination looks kind of pajama pajamory yeah and then a t-shirt underneath she's like can you just go behind this little curtain we're in this caravan and try it on so i put it on it was fine but what i noticed was the cords for the shorts you know the the drawstring. The drawstring, yep. Very long.
Starting point is 00:22:06 I've never encountered them as long as this before. Okay. Poking out the end of the shorts. Why was it not tied up? Well, yeah. Well, even with tying it up, they were that long. They were so long. And then you'd have to tie them up in quite a big bunch.
Starting point is 00:22:21 Yeah. And then tucking them underneath. And it looked like quite bulgy if you tied it up. Oh, right. And I didn't know what to do. And she said that the classic thing that people do when they're outside a changing room going, is everything okay in there? And I went, oh, okay. But first time ever I said, oh, actually I may need some assistance. And so she came in behind the curtain. I was like, look, the jawstring is too long, but I, what I use, I couldn't think of the
Starting point is 00:22:43 word jawstring. So I started using the word thing and I didn't realize that someone had just arrived outside the curtain for me and all they heard was me going my thing's too long and she went oh yeah you're right it's poking out the edge of your shorts and I was like she's like have you tried tucking your thing under and I was like yeah I have but it gets quite bulgy near the top and we're having this conversation totally innocent conversation about the drawstring yeah until we hear this lady out so i go what are you talking about behind here and we had to pull the curtain back and go oh sorry we're just talking about the draw but it did sound very very dodgy i know to be honest being like no one's thinking that with you. There was no confusion.
Starting point is 00:23:26 Hey, what did you want to say? There was no confusion. I was like, hey, if we could just get the word around that it is, my thing is, that would be very good. But it's not. It's clearly not.
