Starting point is 00:00:00 Today on the Wild Wild Web, who was originally meant to sing this song? My loneliness is killing me Welcome to the untamed realm of the world's wide web A swirling vortex of weirdness, bullying, and self-obsessed social media posts In this digital jungle, Jono and Vienna are your fearless guides Leading you through the wildest parts of the wild, wild web. This is the wild, wild web. Good morning.
Starting point is 00:00:34 Good morning. Yeah. Afternoon. Evening. Namaste. Whatever time you're listening, this is the wild, wild web popcast. What is it? Oh, that sounds cuter.
Starting point is 00:00:43 Popcast. Yeah. Better than a podcast. We look at something from the internet that's captured our attention. This is something you just discovered before, Jono. Well, it could be a pop cast, Ben Boyce. It is a pop cast. Yeah, all of your favorite pop bangers.
Starting point is 00:00:58 Who these songs were originally meant to be sung by. Now, we're just sort of deciphering the music business. I'm gathering these songwriters and they'll go, hey, here's a great song. Does anyone want to sing it? And they probably shop that song around, I guess, to the artists. Like a script for a TV show or a movie and stuff like that.
Starting point is 00:01:17 They have demos out there, usually of them singing it. It just happens. It doesn't mean the artists don't. Like Taylor Swift, it sounds like she writes all of her stuff herself, right? Yeah. Which is when you look at her body of work. Yeah. Amazing.
Starting point is 00:01:30 Like how many songs has she got? Even on her latest album, it's like 30 songs. It's a double album of, yeah. Yeah. It's incredible. How many songs has Taylor Swift written? All right. Have a guess.
Starting point is 00:01:42 Um. By herself, by herself. She's collabed on other ones Like I think the The Post Malone one And Oh yeah she also wrote with Joel Little helped
Starting point is 00:01:51 Yeah On the Lover album Yeah She has written A whole bunch of songs Just by herself Purely No collabs
Starting point is 00:01:58 Oh like 335 Dial it back Okay So I was trying not to go too crazy Oh really Okay 67 Oh by herself By herself But then A hundred songs She's been part of writing Dial it back Okay So I was trying not to go too crazy Oh really Okay 67 Oh by herself
Starting point is 00:02:07 By herself But then a hundred songs She'd been part of writing Okay let's go Well because you'd get into this A lot of them are just Her and the producer So it would be like
Starting point is 00:02:14 Her and Jack Antonoff Her and Joel Little Her and the guy from the National Can't remember his name Yeah Okay so then Now sorry I'm just dog-legging here
Starting point is 00:02:22 But we can do on this podcast Taylor Swift wrote This is what You Came For with Calvin Harris. Yeah. She wrote that song? Yeah. They were in a relationship, weren't they? Yeah. Were they?
Starting point is 00:02:35 No, Rita Ora was in a relationship with Calvin Harris. No, she was in a relationship with Calvin Harris, because then I think when they released that, they didn't let on that she'd written it until later. Oh, right. I've just clicked onto a website that said, verifying you're a human. I've passed that test.
Starting point is 00:02:49 Megan, you had a theory on that the other day, which didn't work. No, I think it's... Wait, I'm going to... I swear it works. So you get the boxes and you're like, click on the ones with the bridge or click on the ones with the motorbike.
Starting point is 00:02:59 You're like, it doesn't matter where you click. You just need to take your time because a robot wouldn't take their time. So if it's a bot, it just goes through straight away. So they know, okay, well, that's a robot. But it's just the time it takes you to click rather than what you're actually clicking on. I'm sure someone told me that once. It's a completely automated public test to tell computers and humans apart.
Starting point is 00:03:24 But then you said, oh, why does it keep making me do the test? It's a completely automated public test to tell computers and humans apart. But then you said, oh, why does it keep making me do the test? And we're like, well, because you keep clicking the wrong thing. Yeah, you idiot. You don't know which is the motorbike. No, but even when I was clicking the right thing, it was still making me do heaps. The algorithm's like, man, I've seen some dumb people do this, but we're up to take number 22. We'll give it another chance, which is the bridge.
Starting point is 00:03:44 Click on the ones with the bridge I swear I'm right Someone please let me know So sorry This is songs you didn't know Taylor Swift wrote This is what you came for Calvin Harris Rihanna Better Man by Big Little Town
Starting point is 00:03:57 No Not one Two is Better Than One By Boys Like Girls Is that what Taylor wrote yep she wrote that Renegade by Big Red Machine
Starting point is 00:04:08 okay heard that one so it's clearly like it's the PR thing it's not that her songs are like super great you'll always find your way back home
Starting point is 00:04:16 by Miley Cyrus she wrote that oh it's all from Miley she wrote that so yeah she's obviously kept all the big bangers for herself
Starting point is 00:04:22 don't blame her yeah it would be hard in that situation wouldn wouldn't it? When you're like, oh right, this is a good one. Well that's happened, right Jono? You've got some examples of that. Thank you for bringing us back on track Megan, I do indeed. Today's pop cast.
Starting point is 00:04:36 Britney Spears, Baby One More Time. Not originally pitched to Britney Right Britney was picked up the sloppy seconds Of TLC Oh TLC Don't go Jason Waterfalls
Starting point is 00:04:56 Yeah As your friend once thought the song was called It was Jason there Stick around Jason I really want him to stay Please let go TLC were meant to sing that song originally Yeah
Starting point is 00:05:06 They said hey not for us It's hard when you It's like when you These things come out every now and again Going the original actor They wanted for a movie And it's hard to imagine The roles or the songs
Starting point is 00:05:15 Not It would have had a left eye Rap in the middle of it Yeah It would have been Maybe a different take on it Yeah Okay that's good
Starting point is 00:05:21 That would have been cool I would have liked to have heard that And speaking of Britney Britney Spears And Mary J. Blige were both offered this song, but said, na-na, not for me, thanks. That's like her massive breakout.
Starting point is 00:05:41 I could hear both those artists doing that song. Yeah. And Hey Rihanna did a magnificent job of it. Yeah, incredible. Jay-Z, he hopped on, didn't he? See Rihanna, Little Miss Sunshine, we at? Yeah. He did his little thing.
Starting point is 00:05:54 But yeah, you could imagine Britney singing that easily. So I wonder why she passed up on it. Yeah. Since you've been gone. You wonder sometimes too if it even got their way. Like did it even get to Britney Spears or did her people
Starting point is 00:06:06 at the time just go nah nah nah here's a song you know you'd like to think probably her people you reckon yeah later on go
Starting point is 00:06:13 what I could have had oh what I don't think Britney at the height of her pop fame had that much control over what was really yeah I don't think so
Starting point is 00:06:21 and they were just sitting around going okay we're going to go through a hundred songs right now which ones do you like? Yeah. You're like, oh, well, some people probably brought a short list and the long list, that one was probably on there.
Starting point is 00:06:29 Yeah. This one. Kelly Clarkson. Kelly Clarkson. That was meant to be a Pink song. Oh, Pink would do a great job with that too. Kelly Clarkson is a great song. Yeah, turned down the track.
Starting point is 00:06:43 And so did Hilary Duff. Oh, yeah. Hilary Duff said That's enough from Duff No thank you very much This one I found Really interesting Camilla Cabello I never know
Starting point is 00:06:53 Is it Camilla or Camilla It's Camilla Cabello Why do I say Hard L Soft L Why do I say Camilla Is that right Why have I been saying that for
Starting point is 00:07:01 Because it's Cabello The L's are Oh yeah It's kind of like When you do tarayo and then you tarayo the word properly and then you follow the English word and pronounce that in tarayo.
Starting point is 00:07:11 Like, what did you do the other day? Oh, you were reading something. And then you got to say the English word, the tabaco. Tabaco. I said tabaco. Wonderful pronunciation through everything and then you went tabaco.
Starting point is 00:07:23 But it does. You're right. Your brain's already like. Because you're doing two different vowel sounds, right? Tobacco. Tobacco. Beautiful language. Should have tickled me, though.
Starting point is 00:07:36 God, that tickled me. Beautiful language. Tobacco. Yeah, I know. I mean. Well, it was that, you know, where we mocked the person at that ceremony, the graduation yesterday. Mispronouncing words. Yeah, it's for things like Thomas and stuff like that.
Starting point is 00:07:50 Tomasa. Tomasa. Did you hear that? No. Oh, my gosh. It was a graduation ceremony. And it was words that you would, you know, names that you'd think most people would get. But hey, you know, maybe she was just pronouncing other names and then got to these ones.
Starting point is 00:08:03 Got overwhelmed. Yeah, Tomasa for Thomas. Not like Thomas. Was someone correcting her? I think someone was watching along and then correcting. She's going to take a quick break from this song analysis and be back after this. Welcome back to the Wild Wild Web.
Starting point is 00:08:22 This one I found really interesting. Chainsmokers, Halsey, Banger That's a good song Yeah, Camila Cabello She actually recorded the song Really? With the Chainsmokers Yeah, but then she was like Oh, I'm in another band, Fifth Harmony
Starting point is 00:08:40 And they're doing their thing at the moment And I don't like to do my solo projects Or release solo works When I'm also releasing Fifth Harmony and they're doing their thing at the moment and I don't like to do my solo projects or release solo works when I'm also releasing Fifth Harmony works so out of respect to the group she said I'll pass on this thank you that's interesting because you know they had massive beef eh that whole band
Starting point is 00:08:58 Fifth Harmony yeah they're not harmonious they hated Camilla and I know that for a fact because we interviewed them in studio and she was super lovely and they were so rude to her. Oh, really? They were icing her out and even she'd answer questions and they'd roll their eyes and we were like, what's happening here?
Starting point is 00:09:16 That was right before they broke up. Oh, wow. But it's interesting that you say she cared that much about releasing her solo stuff. Yeah. She cared about them, they didn't care about her. No. Oh, that's a, releasing her solo stuff. Yeah. She cared about them. They didn't care about her. No.
Starting point is 00:09:27 Oh, that's a bit of an insight there. What's been the most awkward interview you've been a part of? That probably would be up there. Was it? Because it was so obvious to everyone in the room that there was beef. And I was like, you know when people are arguing in front of you and you don't know what to do? You're like, ha, ha, ha, ha.
Starting point is 00:09:41 Also, there's very famous people. How do we act? And there's like five of them. So all four of them were kind of ganging up on her oh that's mean i was like oh you think they might have been jealous of her solo success maybe because she'd starting she'd started to do solo stuff yeah remember we had an interview with uh a couple i think one of those reality shows and they were in a relationship at the time. Gaz and Charlotte was in it. Oh, yeah. And we had a great interview.
Starting point is 00:10:07 They were great. And then we left the studio to go do something and the two of them weren't there and then they had quite a big argument in the studio. Oh, they were kicking off and we were in the next room and we could hear because the mics were still on. Did they not realise you could hear?
Starting point is 00:10:18 It wasn't broadcast or anything like that. No, we would never put it to air. We were just like, oh, they were firing up. And we're like, we want to go you know, we want to go back in, but we can't. We've got to give them a moment. No, we had the radios, the songs were running out,
Starting point is 00:10:30 and we're like, yeah. Yeah. But very animated. Yeah. Yeah. They seemed like a passionate couple. They were loving each other. They loved each other.
Starting point is 00:10:38 It was full boys. It was, you know. When they would be humping. High highs, low lows. They'd be humping hard. Yeah. But then the arguments also come with the same amount of passion. We're like, oh, this is awkward.
Starting point is 00:10:45 Then the web guy was like, can I record this? And we're like, no, you can't. Oh, the web guys are like, well, release this. And we're like, no. They don't. Yeah. Yeah, but. I remember hearing an argument with Jessie J.
Starting point is 00:10:57 And I think it was her tour manager or someone from a company. And she was in the hallway. We were waiting for the interview in the room um and she just lost it at this person and we were about to interview her and i was like oh my god i'm terrified and she was so nice she was so nice to us in the interview but she kicked off at someone outside right like fucking up in their job wow i, whoa. I suppose in that role too, and can I just do a side note, back to Gaz and Charlotte, absolutely hilarious listening to people argue in a Geordie accent.
Starting point is 00:11:33 That brought us a lot of joy. But I suppose in that role, you need to probably be firm about what you want. Yeah. Well, it's your image, right? Yeah. You are the brand. Sometimes people go, oh, they're divas, they're divas, and's your image, right? Yeah, yeah. You are the brand. Sometimes people go,
Starting point is 00:11:45 oh, they're divas, they're divas, and I kind of step back and go, well, are they? Or are they just, they've worked so hard to get to where they are. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:52 They know what they stand for. They know who they are as an artist. And who does everyone blame when it goes wrong? Yeah, true. No, not the person who was getting yelled at
Starting point is 00:12:00 in the hallway. Yeah, no. It would be on her. You're right. So, hell, you don't, you don't sometimes, some of those. You don't know the situation of what happened. You don't know why. Yeah, no. It would be on her. You're right. So, hell, you don't, you don't sometimes, some of those.
Starting point is 00:12:05 You don't know the situation of what happened. You don't know why. No, he probably did stuff up. You know, it could have been a monument, you know, like, you know. So, you don't even know
Starting point is 00:12:13 until you know the full story, right? Sometimes we just sit here on the radio and go, oh, they're divas. Or someone goes around as such and such and they were a bit standoffish or whatever and they,
Starting point is 00:12:20 who knows what day they were having or, you know. Yeah, and that's what I, I thought, oh, she's going to walk into the room and be like a real cow but she like
Starting point is 00:12:27 switched it on and was like nice as to us we had a great interview first question we were like what the hell's going on in there
Starting point is 00:12:32 no we had to pretend we didn't just hear it I was like oh what oh hey well that that's been the the wild world web today some songs that
Starting point is 00:12:42 almost were sung by other artists and you didn't say the Ed Sheeran one. Oh, yeah. Shape of You. Yeah, he was writing that in his head. He was like, I am writing this song for Rihanna.
Starting point is 00:12:53 And then he said there was a line where he was like, oh, she's never going to sing that. And so then he just persisted with, what was the line? Sorry. It's got that cool feel to it. They ended up signing away rights to tlc didn't they he said i started putting in lyrics like putting van the man on the jukebox and he was like well she's not really gonna say that she was like who's man that made a little bit morrison who is the man
Starting point is 00:13:18 i love that he just got to himself he got in his head and he was like she's not even gonna want this i'll just talk myself I just find it really interesting that whole that whole world because you said Sea arose Diamonds by Rihanna yeah
Starting point is 00:13:31 and then she sung it she performed it live I'll have to find that for you to play it to you it was amazing you were playing it before off the internet
Starting point is 00:13:38 that was a recorded version they sound very similar yeah I wouldn't have noticed the difference yeah hey well that's that's been interesting stuff yeah it was thanks Shona version. They sound very similar. Yeah. I wouldn't have noticed the difference. Yeah. That's been interesting stuff.
Starting point is 00:13:49 It was. Thanks, Shano. We should look at some actors maybe tomorrow too. Oh, yes. I love that game. You're like, oh, imagine that movie with that person. You can't. No, you're right. It's like music. Once it's released and you're like, I love that song. I couldn't imagine anyone else doing it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:04 Wait for 30 years and someone else will re-record some of those and you'll go oh that's new version of something but hey well that's uh that's been the world world we've got a wonderful day uh we'll catch you back tomorrow
