The Hits, with the Jono and Ben podcast.
Cheers to Dilma, making the world a better tea.
Monday on 3, there's a new series called The Far North.
It's based on the true story about how a comically inept gang
smuggled half a billion dollars worth of meth into the Far North,
only to have their plans ruined by a local couple.
Yes, and two of the stars of the show are acting royalty.
The one and only, they're in our Auckland studio at the moment,
the one and only Tim Oda-Morrison and Robin Malcolm.
Welcome to the show.
Thank you. Thank you for having us.
Thank you for having us.
I can't believe you two are still working in this business.
I used to dodge you guys.
We're the Kameleon, to be honest, Tim.
I used to dodge you guys back in the day.
We used to harass Tim to come on the show,
and he did a good job of avoiding us for seven years.
Robin, you couldn't escape us.
Yeah, Robin, we wore you down eventually, didn't we?
Yeah, you did.
You did.
It took a couple of years, I think.
I must say congratulations for these two guys for still being here.
I know.
No one's more surprised than Tim Morrison.
Tim's like, I thought they were dead.
Unbelievable. What's the, I thought they were dead. Unbelievable.
What's the opposite of a national treasure?
Hey, all right.
Not everyone's gone on to Hollywood like you two.
We keep waiting for Hollywood to call back.
They made it on that big show.
Graham, what's his name?
Oh, Graham Norton.
I couldn't believe it.
I couldn't believe an episode,
and I saw these two on Graham Norton's show.
Well, you beat me, boys.
You beat me.
So, look, congratulations.
Congratulations.
We haven't been at Star Wars.
I wouldn't be surprised if you turn up on Star Wars in some galaxy far, far away.
But, look, I must congratulate you guys because for two guys that really had no talent whatsoever,
man, you guys have done remarkably well.
And there's something in persistency, I guess, or keeping it up.
In defecitability.
Just being annoying pests and hanging around.
There was something to be said for that.
That's right.
What's the cake you're making?
What are you doing?
So we're trying to make every single cake.
Do you remember the Women's Weekly Birthday Cake book that every child in New Zealand seemed to pick cakes out of growing up?
Well, we're trying to make every single cake from that book
over the next couple of days.
Well, didn't you, Robin, didn't you, speaking of cakes,
didn't you take a cake as a child and not into a wee bit of trouble?
Yeah, I did.
I stole a cake when I was five.
And it was from the church group or something, I think.
It was from a church sale across the road in Motueka
what a monstrous act
stealing a cake from a church sale
I love it
congratulations on the new show
it looks fantastic
because I mean it was
yeah it was a 2016 wasn't it
where they were probably inexperienced people
trying to import half a billion dollars worth of meth
yeah and they nearly succeeded
had it not been for these two.
For the couple that you play in the series.
Yeah, amazing couple.
And really, you know, there's such a massive meth problem in New Zealand.
And what they did was just amazing.
Stopping that amount coming into the country was extraordinary.
And they did it from the perspective of um they were
just simply kind people who were trying to help out and they got embroiled in something that they
had no idea of until their spidey senses started telling them that there was something else was
going on it's a good yarn it's very funny true story and we've got a good mix of uh talent yeah
so if you're doing nothing next monday 830, TV3 right after the John and Ben show
hopefully
I've got some
news to tell you, you're going to take this
quite hard to take I imagine Tim, but no longer
are we on TV
who would have thought it eh?
there's still time
you could help them out Tim
these guys are actually good, they're very very funny
not that I could understand any of their jokes but they're very
you both have done such amazingly well uh over the years uh you know going on to star in your
movies tv shows in new zealand overseas i mean a lot to do with talent but also luck as well
i was reading tim that you you got your role in Star Wars because the casting lady was staying in the same hotel as you
and you got talking to her.
I mean, there must be luck as well as talent
that come into getting these big roles.
Yep, yep.
Sometimes you've just got to be in the right place at the right time.
It's only been really the last three, two years
that I've actually really been busy.
It's never been like this before.
You know, in our game, you sort of go out there out there do a movie and then you wait a year before it
comes out again but there's also that year waiting around where the phone's
not ringing so yeah so it's just like what you and Ben and John oh no already
is just hanging in there staying in there and patience and. And one day, one day it'll happen.
Plus you've got faces that deserve to be on TV.
Most DJs should be on the radio.
But you guys are fortunate.
You're the pretty boys of New Zealand radio.
That's right.
Listen, this has been a fine line between an interview and a roast.
I love it.
On a bit of a serious note, your colleagues and no doubt many of your friends are part of the actors strike in the US.
What do you want to say on that?
2,000% support it.
The industry is changing and actors are not being protected. is that the 86% of actors over there who can't earn enough money to get medical insurance
are really being starved out by those billionaires
who run those companies.
And, you know, I just love the fact that SAG
is such a strong union and it's supporting them all.
Oh, that's awesome.
Well, it's so nice to catch up with you.
Far North looks incredible.
Two of the great New Zealanders.
Congratulations on this series and look after yourselves.
Thanks, Maxia.
