The Jono Ben and Megan podcast, thanks to Dilma.
Goodness really does taste great.
Dilma, making the world a better tea.
Yesterday was having a conversation with Jen, my wife.
And just in any conversation, it doesn't necessarily have to be with your partner.
Sometimes your mind wanders, you know, when you're talking halfway through the conversation.
I know producer Grace, she makes us all hold eye contact with her,
so she knows that we're digesting the information she's related.
me, look at me.
She's like,
and she won't start what she's saying
until we're looking at her dead in the eyes.
I know,
yeah, it's a good theory.
I could tell, you know,
with, yeah,
both these guys,
I can tell when they were locked in or not.
I'm like, yeah,
we'll have that conversation again later
because they haven't quite digested that.
You're like,
yeah, we didn't talk about that 20 minutes ago,
but anyway.
Must be frustrating.
Must be frustrating.
So I understand why you've employed
the remain eye contact system there, Grace.
But yesterday we're just,
we're talking about something.
And again,
my mind wandered to other stuff.
She, Jen, obviously, probably
same as you been, she can tell when I'm soaking up the info.
You glaze over.
She's like, are you even listening?
Because I'm making all the right facial expressions, nodding,
and I think I'm selling the fact that I'm listening.
And she said, are you even listening?
Now you've got two options here.
You can be honest and say, no, I'm not.
I made a terrible mistake.
Oh, you can lie.
I chose option B, lying.
I said, of course I'm listening.
What are we talking about then?
Oh, that was a big question from her, and a fair question, too, to be honest.
Yeah, that was a pretty good follow-up, too.
Do you go into your mind and I try and replay it back through my eyes?
You're like, replay, replay, replay.
Yeah, but you've got a split second.
Yeah, you don't have time to...
Yeah, it's like when a guy's asked something and he doesn't want to answer the question,
he'll just go, huh.
Yeah, it gives you a bit of time for them to hope they repeat the question.
You do that all the time.
Yeah, just buys your three.
four seconds. Now, you know, we're pulling back the curtain here for the guys, but it's a tactic
that we use from time to time. Then I was, I don't know, this is never going to happen again
in my marital career, but I just pulled it out of thin air, guys. I said, we're talking
about the compost bins and what day they need to go out. And I could tell she's like,
you son of a bit. You're just fluked this. Was it a wild guest? It was it, well, it's kind of
Maybe subliminally.
You pick up things.
They've digested it.
I think my wife gets annoyed because I do listen, but I'm quite good at thinking about something
else and multitasking.
And she's like, you're not listening.
But then I've picked up enough to go, yeah, how we're talking about?
Did blah, blah, blah.
She's like, oh, is she?
And you've given her three points.
Yeah, well done.
We all know that you didn't listen.
You've just, you've just bullet pointers.
I don't know how those three things connect.
I've heard keywords over the last little bit.
I'm like, yeah, yeah, good.
I've seen both of those play out in real time.
Yeah.
And I'm talking in the studio.
John will be like, huh?
And Ben's like, oh yeah, you're talking about,
Liam Lawson.
Keyword Liam Lawson, Red Bull.
John O'Benn and Megan, the podcast.
That really throws me as, can I ask a favour?
But they never tell you what the favour is
when they're asking the favour.
So are we, as the receiver of this question,
are we legally allowed to go, well, I'll reserve.
A, can you say no, I'm not in a favour-giving mood?
Or B, how about we tell me?
What the favour is first?
What the favour is, yeah, yeah, it's a good point.
Because it generally is never a good favour, you know?
Because they know what they're doing.
Can I ask your favour?
Yeah, go for it.
Can you help me move on Saturday?
Now, you're in a position where how do you weasel out of that?
You say you're busy.
Yeah, I reckon you can ask.
We need to be like, well, it depends.
Yeah, depends.
But then you look a little, you don't look very giving, do you as a human being?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, no, being put on the spot with stuff.
You know, yeah.
need almost like time you're like thank you for asking me that i'll come back to you in seven to ten
business days or do we go do we have a menu is it a small favor is it a medium favor or is it a big
favor and then they have to go i'd put this in the medium favor carry to green and be like i don't have
time for a medium favor generally if i'm like oh can i have a favor like it's just something little
otherwise you'd say can i ask a huge favor yeah you have the right to go well what is that first
another frightening one is
we got one from our boss on Friday
Can I call you?
Oh God
And I could see Ben's anxiety
playing out of real time.
Oh, it's all three of us at the same time.
Oh, three of us.
And then Harriet, our boss didn't give anything back to you either.
That sounds scary.
On a Friday afternoon.
Don't come back on Monday.
Can I call you?
And at least in that it is that you go,
yeah, what about?
Can I have some little entree?
Yeah, it's not.
It's just about, yeah.
You didn't get that.
didn't got nothing until the phone call came through.
I had to text and say,
I'm at the doctor, I'm at the doctor,
I was thinking I'd get out of it.
And she said, well, call me back when you have time.
I was like, oh, God.
It needs to be a voice to voice.
Yeah.
Right afternoon.
Not great time.
Monstrous acts.
John O'Benn and Megan.
The podcast.
The Hits.
Did he rail link going about?
We went and saw it on Friday
when they had the opening before it was open for the public.
And amazing, hey?
Like, it was really incredible.
Yeah, it is a very major fetish.
of engineering and that doesn't usually get me jazz
but it's like really big
under the city
yeah it's beautiful everyone's feel everyone keeps going
it feels like an international city
but then to international people we are an international
yeah true it's very New Zealand
comment is like do we deserve to have something this nice
in New Zealand yeah it looks so international
it doesn't look like it should be here
because usually we're just like cultural cringe
we'll just get what we're given
I know it's really flash it is flash
you can see why it was over budget
we all expect to just a pop up 10 from the warehouse
The house is the train station, but they've outdone themselves.
Anyway, I was asked along by Oklahoma Mayor, Wayne Brown, to be the town crier.
The traumatic event.
Now Brownie's saying get over the trauma.
We've got more to do.
We've got work to do, mate.
You're on the campaign trail with Brownie.
Is it a campaign for him?
It feels like you're part of his...
I'm running on Brownie now?
Browntown, downtown Brown.
Is it a Brown Pryor for 2026?
Electric is it?
You're running together?
Code Brown.
Yeah.
Code Brown.
It's going to be the name of our campaign.
But yeah, we did this on Friday
in front of every person who makes important decisions about this country.
Prime Minister, leaders of every party, they're all there, right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Oh, God, it gives me like flashbacks.
You know, when you're gone to those poor fellas who went to Vietnam
and they get triggered by flashbacks.
Please don't compare that.
No, don't.
What it feels like.
This is what it feels like to me.
It was like I'm in a war zone out there.
Oh, God.
Okay, Captain Phil.
Feather Sword, that's what they're saying in the comments.
There's some really colonial comments.
A lot of people like really the cosplay of what you're doing,
James Cook.
I thought James Cook was killed in Hawaii.
How's he ended up back here?
You know, stuff like that.
So you really are the face of, yeah.
Colonization.
I mean, that's fine.
I mean, if you're going to pick a great face for colonizing Ben,
what about this one?
Yeah, well, yeah.
So afterwards, that went down.
We're all a little shell-shot and rattled,
and we sort of talked to.
There was a few leaders going past and stuff.
Winnie?
Winston. He witnessed it first hand. He was only a meter away from the town prior.
Winston, how's the town prior? He did a very good job. He said that, but he wouldn't stop to talk.
He was busy. He was a walking and talking situation, Winston, so I don't think he wanted to be seen with the town prior.
He didn't actually look impressed when you were doing it. I don't know if you've glanced at Winnie's face.
I am not watching that video back. You can rest assured. But then you said something even more horrific happened
after the town prior.
Yeah.
No, you talk about it.
I don't even want to talk about it.
I don't even know what you're talking about it, so I can't talk about it.
Well, there's a guy that we have, we've run into a couple of times before.
We've talked and he's visually impaired, right?
And we had a, you remember, had a conversation with him afterwards.
I know what you're going to say.
He has a guide dog with him.
Yeah.
I know what you're going to say.
Don't worry, I knew what was happening.
And as you sort of went up and said, hello, did you know what's happening?
You said, and I get, you know, you're, this.
This was, with all good, you didn't mean to say this.
The intention was not there, but you said, good to see you, mate.
And we all went, oh, did he just, like, in our heads, we all went, oh, did that what John did say?
I did that in my head too, yeah.
But did you, because at the end of it, Megan and I were like, is Johnny going to realize what he has done?
Yeah, I thought, surely, in that moment you'd be like, oh, foot and mouth, I'll just carry on,
and then I'll just say, you know, bye.
And then at the end, when we were saying goodbye, you were like, it was great to see you, mate.
I think it's like, three times, I think we counted.
See you again?
I mean, it's at that moment,
like I did clock it actually
and I was like, geez, you really don't,
you really don't factor how many times
you say good to see you in a conversation
to people.
Well, you, especially.
Even after the first time I was like,
he's going to say something else at the end,
like catch you later or something else.
But no, three times,
three times in the one conversation.
Yeah, I, yeah, I was getting,
yeah, there was a lot of trauma happening there
and I was probably not on my A game
when it came to the conversation.
Yeah, I did realize three.
times I did say, I made reference
to visualness
during that conversation.
And there was no, you know, the intention
was not there to, you know, like it was, but
yeah. It did, yeah, it did
feel a little bit like you were.
But, I mean, technically, I could
see him.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So I'm not lying.
Oh, true.
Like, I'm not saying,
I must be good for you to see me.
Yeah, yeah, true. Yeah, true. Sometimes
just say less, like, hey, mate.
mate, yeah.
That's it, and then start the conversation
and see you later, mate.
I know, afterwards, I'm like,
could this day get any worse?
Well, but yeah, I don't have a good.
You guys left without me.
We got to get away.
We went in a different exit.
Yeah.
I carried a hugely heavy table
just to get out of there.
John O'Bin and Megan,
the podcast, the hits.
So it was in Sephora.
I'm sure you get dragged around.
the mecas and the Sephora's of the world been
done my time in those stores
so many many times
I like just kind of
wandering around meandering
I sort of let Poppy
my daughter do what she needs to do
in those shops
and I noticed at Sephora
that on some products
they have a rubber band
wrapped around the product
and on the top is like a little alarm device
all right okay
and I was just holding up
it was some perfume
and I was like
how does this work
how does this alarm work
now at which point
you know most responsible adults
would go
I'm sure it's a great security measure and put the thing back on the shelf.
Yeah.
I was like, no, I've got to try this out.
It was a packed shop too Sunday.
And so what I did is I kind of just pulled the rubber band off a little bit to see what would happen.
Oh, right.
Yeah.
Don't do that.
Oh, really?
Boo, boom, boom.
And then I'm left holding this like 50-mill perfume with this alarm going on.
Oh, is it activated like that?
Yeah, like even if you just try and slide the rubber band on, like it comes off easy enough.
Wow.
But boy, it really draws attention to you.
Oh.
And then at which point, obviously, your staff member comes over,
and I'm like, I'm far too old to be in this situation.
That's what I'm thinking in my head.
And I'm like, I'm sorry, man, I just knocked it.
I could kind of tell in their eyes that they've seen this 100 times before.
I feel like the truth would have been more believable.
You're like, I actually was just like pulling this thing to see.
To see what it did.
And now I've found out what it does.
Yeah.
So, hey, well done you guys.
That was a great investment from Sephora International Limited.
Well yesterday after the show I was telling Megan this story
And she was like well you need to come clean
Just to Dan Megan you know the theme of that was come clean be honest
Yeah
So we phone Sephora
So for a new market how can I help
Hey Diva
Good thank you how are you
I'm good
Hey listen I need to come clean
It's John O'Bin and Megan here from the Hits radio station
I came into your shop yesterday with my daughter
Yes
And in your shop around some products
You've got like, it's almost like a rubber band with a security tag on top.
Yeah.
I was really intrigued by them, and I was like, I wonder what these do.
Because they don't look like they're very effective.
And then I tried to pull the rubber band off.
And then the alarm sounded.
Okay.
One of your friendly team came up, and I might have lied and said,
oh, sorry, I accidentally knocked it.
Ah, was it on the perfume?
Yeah.
Uh, yeah.
Do you remember the incident?
I wasn't here, actually, but that's interesting.
She heard about it.
Yeah.
Did you?
Did you hear about it?
No.
Oh, that was really good delivery from you.
So that was, that was Sephora yesterday.
And you know, in a small, this country's too small,
Twister Fader got message last night from one of the mothers from the basketball team.
She's like, I think you prank called my daughter at Sephora today.
Oh, really.
New Zealand's too small.
Can't get away with pranking any.
What don't even pranking?
And you called her, Deva.
That was on Grace's.
That was, producer Grace was like, as soon as you answered the phone,
you'll say, hey, diva.
That really got things off to a weird start.
I think she liked it.
She was like, hey.
So, yeah, don't try and pull the rubber band security tags off at Sephora.
They work.
They do.
I've done God's work for you.
John O'Bin and Megan.
The podcast.
The Hats.
Raising money and awareness for the Child Cancer Foundation.
They do incredible work around.
the country helping families for everything from fuel and groceries to counseling and emotional support
you can text whig to three four five seven and make an instant three dollar donation or visit
wigw Wednesday.org.n.n.z. to donate any amount and we'll have some special things tomorrow to
hopefully raise as many funds as we can because every dollar helps families facing childhood
cancer and helps them feel less alone. Wonderful cause here we had some people from the child
cancer foundation in last week and geez great work that they're doing.
Whig, yeah, text wig to $3, $34,573.
Now, I mentioned it, oh, it says about six months ago,
I had written a letter into the council
entering my old man era.
Not a handwritten, Lisa, though I.
No, it was an email.
It was an email letter about the light phasing near my house.
The light phasing was favouring one side of the traffic,
and it was blocking up a whole road.
And they came through, they changed the light phasing.
And the flow, oh, clear is when you sort out your process.
state issues.
Free flowing.
Every time you drive up to that phasing, do you think, do you feel like you're on a horse?
I'm like, you're welcome, everybody.
You're welcome. I'm wondering if we name it.
Do you sing that in your head?
The Jonathan Prime Memorial intersection.
Doing work for the community out there.
Well, I've done more community work.
Now, this involves video footage too.
So I noticed there's like a side street that people take a few rights out of.
But then on the main road, cars can park right up to the.
the corner of the main road.
So you can't actually see what cars are coming
towards you as you're turning right.
Right. No yellow lines.
Okay.
So I'm like, someone's going to lose an eye here.
I've nearly seen it multiple to multiple times.
And so then I thought, oh, well, yesterday I'll do something about it.
I've got nothing better to do.
So I was like, hey, look, look at this at multiple angles,
like the Martin Scorsesio of traffic safety.
Not photos, videos.
I was like and as I was filming
it nearly happened there was nearly an accident
perfect it was like I'd orchestrated
the scene and I was like someone
someone's gonna lose an eye here guys and I was doing
commentary over the top
and so we'll see what the results of that are so we don't know
results pending on that council video
but that's doing that's that's trying to save someone
from hurting themselves yeah that's nice
that's not just inconveniencing you
slightly for 30 seconds of lights
yeah no I mean
yeah that's right that's actually I'll just
obnoxiously pull out in front of anyone
and take it right. You've got to have confidence, you know?
Well, there was that hero that was getting
the potholes removed, remember, by he was spray
painting things that, you know, naughty things.
Male genitalia. Oh, yeah.
And they were like, well, they didn't like that, so they'd go
fix the potholes, but that was getting results,
wasn't it? Maybe that's what I'd do.
Just spray genitals all over the road.
And you go, here's where the yellow lines
should be, so cars can park a bit further back so you can
see what's on coming. When you're, like, retelling
this now, do you still feel like
as passionate about it, or is there a bit of, like,
No, it was one of those moments where I'm like, you know, you're probably the same where you get really involved in a certain topic.
Yeah.
You're like, geez, I got in too deep there.
Did that require three video angles?
Hyperfixating, yeah.
And now you're like, oh.
I could probably an hour and a half out of my day by the time I'd we transferred the videos to my email.
Oh my God.
Drafted an email.
Sounds like something both you guys would do.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So, uh, there we go.
You can hear me overnight on News Talks, Z'd be three in the morning I'll be calling in with some more issues.
John O'Benin and Megan.
The podcast.
The heads.
Yeah, like I said yesterday, I don't know if it was after Sunday night's loss.
It was in a vulnerable state yesterday.
I know you were too, Ben.
Oh, yeah, and it still carries on with now that the referee being stood down for the decision.
Now the NRL's like, yes, no, he did make a bad call.
It's too late.
It's too late.
You're like, leave us alone.
What have we done to you, people?
It's too late.
And anyway, the riff did pretty well, I thought, for most of it.
But anyway, it's hard.
Well, I'm glad you didn't see this video yesterday,
so I don't know if you'd be able to come into work today.
Right.
And so, listen, I know how these work.
Get a little bit of this.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
So it popped off on my feed yesterday.
You're glazy-eyed already.
Well, because I guess it's the stage of life we're in where, we're being you and me, kids a little bit older.
Yeah.
And our parents are a little bit older.
And it's how a child sees his father at every age.
So five years old, dad is a superhero.
The strongest and cleverest, the best on the planet.
10, he's the defender.
Solves things.
Still a hero, but no longer a magician.
You start noticing he gets tired.
15.
He's behind the times.
His advice is old.
His rules are infuriating.
His jokes, not funny.
20.
Dad is in the background.
He can.
calls you decline. He texts, you answer in one word. You grew up, you're forming your own life.
25. Turns out the advice was right. The annoying advice. The warnings come true. What sounded like
nagging turned out to have been experienced. 30. Dad is a person. Not a God, a man who was scared,
who got things wrong.
finally see him for who he is and love him.
Forty, time is running out.
You notice the grey, the slower walk,
the pauses when he loses the work.
And then afterwards, Dad is inside you for good.
He's gone, but you catch his gestures in yourself.
His phrases, his look in the mirror.
That got me yesterday.
Bloody Warriors.
I think you got me.
And Ben's just sitting there
without a tear.
I think it's like it's good.
That's really well written.
Yeah.
So, hey.
Good perspective.
Yeah.
Love your parents.
Yeah.
Exactly.
That's some really good stuff this morning.
It's the hats.
John O'Benn and Megan.
The podcast.
The hits.
Interesting in this, Ben.
I see a cute little six-year-old girl from China.
smashed a Rubik's Cube record.
Oh, like three or four seconds.
Incredible.
Like, yeah.
They are elite, aren't they?
It's just a better nation, China.
You can't even...
No.
I learned it once for a TV thing we're doing,
and it's all about algorithms and learning, like, patterns and stuff.
But to do that in that amazing...
Even if you knew, that's still in a...
Oh, yeah.
So fast.
I'm like, I'm like, like, L to...
The...
You got there in the end, though, which was impressive.
Well, after a month.
subsequently trying to learn. Now I've forgotten it.
But yeah, like, I think it maybe would have
got down to if I was good, like a minute,
but then most of the time, like five minutes, it would take
me just to slowly work my way through.
This adorable or six-year-old girl will be laughing in your
face. Three seconds.
Wild times.
Well, I spent, speaking of all things
time, 45 minutes yesterday in Bunnings.
Now, you know, sometimes
with, like, we've got a white shelf,
which is in the sun, and there's a
strip of the shelf that becomes
yellow, you know? Yeah. And so, I's
doing some research and it says what you need is melamine tape.
And then you can iron on the tape over the top of the yellow strip.
And Bunnings had melamine tape.
So you go in there and they're always so friendly.
And one of the skills of every member, every team member of Bunnings is they know where every goddamn item is in that way.
Yeah.
So that's incredible.
They're not even taught it.
They just, just absorb it.
Oh, I thought that was like how they, you know, like that's the entry induction.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
get a quiz.
Yeah, I couldn't even tell you where stuff is in this office.
We're like, where's a stapler?
Oh, I don't know.
But yeah, as you do, you go in there and you ask a friendly team member.
I'm after Millermine tape.
And bang, straight back, aisle 10.
You need to go aisle 10.
Now, this is where the embarrassment kicks in.
Because, like, there's nothing more that Bunnings could do at this point,
apart from walk escorting me to the tape.
I've got the information, go to aisle 10,
and I couldn't, for the life of me, find this tape.
and I was walking up and down
both I was like I was like
I was got to be here somewhere
so then I'm like well I can't go back
to the first person last
that's embarrassing
so then I find another friendly team member
do you know with Melomite
your aisle 10 mate
went back to aisle 10
I thought maybe for the first person
or could have made a rare mistake
a rare mistake yeah
but no it was definitely
oil 10 went back to old 10
I went through four different team members
going back
yeah but why didn't you say to the second one
I looked in aisle 10 but I couldn't find it
thing called street cred megan
A little thing called street cred.
Do you help me find it?
Yeah, you've got to keep up your credin budding.
Right.
So you want to look like, even though I don't look like I belong there,
you want to look like you're part of the team.
And eventually, team member number one saw still be wandering around like a lost child.
It was like, did you not find the tape?
And I just had to, I had to save face.
I was like, oh yeah, found the tape.
Don't worry about that.
Just looking for some other stuff.
But you haven't found it?
Well, I wasn't holding the tape.
Oh, Jonathan.
And I was, I know where the tape was I was going to go get back in.
So then I walked out of the tape was.
there without the tape.
Oh, you didn't go?
No.
So we don't even know if the tape was in there.
Pride.
Yeah.
So now the shelf's still yellow.
So my wife got home. She's like, why is the shelf still yellow?
