The Hits with Jono and Ben's Burner Phone.
It is our Burner Phone, as we've explained many times.
It's a special podcast we really love doing,
where we clear a message on a phone that we've bought.
The Burner Phone.
I keep saying special so many times.
It is special. It's special to my heart.
It's special to your heart.
I mean, the amount of affairs you've run through this phone,
that's why it's so special.
So you can get that message if you want it.
The phone number, just text Burner or Burner Phone to 4487.
Yeah, leave us a voicemail and we'll tackle a different one a day.
And it's a really enjoyable format, this.
You never know what's going to happen from one day to the other.
The ground we have covered in only a fortnight of the Burner Phone
should be winning us international podcast awards
i it's like those books i don't know if you ever used to read those back in the day the pick a path
books you know where you go you could get to a stage you're like do you want to go here do you
want to go here and i feel like that's you know the book's kind of dictating you and you guys with
the burner phone are pushing us in a direction we don't know where we're going to go yeah we're just
like uh oh i was trying to think of an analogy on the spot characters from our game that you're like where are we going to go
and it's up to you you you control oh you did the picker path thing yeah why was i trying to
i know but i'm giving you another one as well yeah why was i trying to think of it like you
after the the christmas party where you're like come on mate you better get into an uber that
sort of thing yeah yeah that those My nana on her wheelchair?
Does that work? Yeah, that works.
Here's today's message.
Next new voice message from
02108192190
received
on Thursday at
11.40pm.
Oh, yes, Kilda, I just wanted to ring this
number because I'm
basically sitting here thinking
is this a legit
exercise
that
I'm not feeling too stupid
calling about because
I wanted some clarification
because
I wanted to know if this really is a real number or are you just playing funny business?
So mostly what I wanted to let you know is I've been baking biscuits today and I would be happy to give you a batch if you'd like.
But let me know because my number should come up after the beep on this message.
So you let me know.
I'd be more than happy to do it.
But I've done red, yellow, and green icing,
so you're going to have to pick another color.
Anyway, I wish you all the best,
and hopefully this turns out to be legit, eh?
Because I don't want to feel like I've wasted my time doing something stupid.
That's such a great message.
Thanks very much, and I hope you cream it.
Thank you very much.
That's lovely.
What a lovely message.
If you want red, white, and blue ice, forget about it, mate.
Forget about it. They've already done that.
Yeah, red, white, blue.
I mean, what else would you go for?
I guess you can have it like.
Green?
Yeah, green's nice.
You'll have yellow.
That's lovely, isn't it?
Some biscuits could be made for us.
I'm going to talk about the elephant or the biscuit in the room, Ben.
What's that?
Listener food.
It's listener food.
It falls into the listener food category, and it's a topic not widely spoken by the media industry,
but there are moments throughout your career,
little tentpole moments,
where you receive baked goods from listeners.
Now...
So I think, do you know what I think it is?
This is, you've often said,
because you've been in the radio game for years and years.
Radio game for years, mate.
And you're like, you don't eat the first rule of radio,
you don't eat the food from the listeners.
That's the first rule.
Maybe I should have learned other rules for learning before.
Broadcasting school was like, never rig a competition.
You can get in a lot of legal trouble.
That was the beat.
For you, you're like, no.
And I think it's because you started at The Rock.
And The Rock, generalizing here, not the huge baking audience.
So if they're going to bring something along,
it's probably going to be prank or lace with something.
So that's, but I think on the hits,
you're probably 99.9% safety.
In fact, you'll be eating wonderful dishes on the hits.
But in your past, I understand where your stance comes from.
I've come from, yeah,
I've been tarnished in the past with listener baked goods.
You know, some, I went missing for four days.
Yeah. Missing for four days.
Missing for four days.
I was in a wonderful magical land with talking unicorns, Ben.
You see, this is why.
I get it.
But in the hits, as we've talked about before, lovely, lovely audience.
Okay.
Well, should we call this person back? Well, actually, I want to call someone else actually for this.
Harriet.
I'm going to call Harriet.
Because she made, she came in the other day,
she made some stuff for a birthday,
for Producer Joel's birthday.
And she made a wonderful cake and some biscuits.
And I had the biscuits,
and I want to hit her up about something
to do with the biscuits.
One, two.
Because they were lovely.
It was lovely.
This is Harriet.
Now, Harriet started out in the promotional department.
Now the boss.
One of the big bosses here at the radio station.
Yeah, yeah, one of the bosses.
And also taking time out of her day to make cake and biscuits.
Beneath her new managerial role.
What I always get weirded out by is when people your same age or younger than you end up in management roles.
It's going to happen more and more now.
Hey, it's Harriet.
Sorry I can't talk to the phone at the moment.
Too busy.
She's doing management stuff.
And I'll get back to you as soon as possible.
Thank you.
Bye.
Too busy doing management stuff.
That's a tone.
That's what you get when you call a manager.
Buddy, call again.
Harriet, can I confirm to our wonderful listener
that you will be eating the baked goods,
the baked biscuits he's...
Hey, it's Harriet.
Sorry I can't come to the phone at the moment.
But please leave a message
and I'll get back to you.
Do we keep going?
Are we turning this into, we can see her, she's not doing
anything, she's just screaming.
I'm going to be relentless.
We don't stop this podcast until
Harriet answers her phone.
What if...
Hey, it's Harriet. Sorry I can't come to the phone at the moment,
but please leave a detailed message and I'll get back to you. Her shallow, egot break breakfast announces needed something
from her we need to complete the birdify you wanted to call the person which was
the made sense I imagine how many times we keep going we keep going we do hey we'll keep going
it's probably quite an important single hey it's harry
all right all right we'll put it on there let's call the baker back i'm going to come back to Hey, it's Harriet. Sorry, I can't get the phone at the moment. All right. Okay.
We'll put it on there.
Let's call the baker back.
I'm going to come back to that.
I didn't get to say what I wanted to say.
What were you exactly going to say? I don't think you're going to get the chance to say it.
I've got to put it on the record here.
I don't know how many times we can call a poor lady and...
The biscuits were wonderful, but the biscuits were Subway biscuits
that she claimed to bake.
What a claim.
Because I go to Subway quite a lot, and I'm like, these are delicious.
And then after a while, I'm like, this is why they're delicious, because they're Subway biscuits.
That's what I'm going to say.
Oh, I will have no part of the shade.
She is a proud baker, Harriet.
You're coming in here saying she swung by Subway,
picked up some cookies and is
palming them off as her own at a
birthday celebration? Wonderful, wonderful
cookie. If not,
she's
cracked the Subway
recipe. Well, Ben, clearly she doesn't
want to talk to you. So maybe she
is hiding something. We'll get her back tomorrow
on the burner phone. We'll get to the bottom of this.
In the meantime, do we call the baker back
tomorrow as well? Yeah, let's do that tomorrow as well.
Okay, part two of this. Okay, part two.
The bake-off. The great New Zealand, the great Kiwi
bake-off is next on the Burner phone.
