It is our Burner phone where we check a message every day
And if you want the number and want to leave us a message
You can do so, just text
The easiest way is to text BURNER to 4487
We'll flick you back the number and then you can call us up
Any time, day or night
That's right, now
This one I've already heard
And I think this will touch your heart
Ben Boyce
It's a message specifically about one of the teams that you support
And it's very simple, it's 1.8 seconds long
Okay, okay
The shortest voicemail in the
This is the whole message, is it?
Here we go
Up the Warriors
Oh, that's it?
Okay, up the Warriors
No other, nothing at the beginning going
Hey, they've had a great season
Or hopefully they're going to make the grand final.
Nothing.
Just up the Warriors.
Now, is this the common saying?
Up the Waz is kind of the new one.
It used to be let's go on Warriors because it was a sign that was –
I don't know if it was a gag or if it was unintentional.
I don't know what, but there was just a sign saying let's go on Warriors.
It was meant to say let's go on Warriors.
Yeah, or let's go Warriors or something, but it went let's go on Warriors. Maybe it was meant to say, Let's Go On Warriors. Yeah, or Let's Go Warriors or something.
But it went, Let's Go On Warriors.
And maybe it was a gag.
I'm not sure.
But that took off for a while.
Now it's Up The Waz.
The Waz for the Warriors.
Should we get Producer Taylor in here?
Because I feel like I shouldn't.
I'm no longer qualified to talk about the Warriors. You're not the Warriors expert on the show now.
Producer Taylor is our Warriors contact now.
Ben Boyce used to be the number one Warriors supporter,
but now just due to marriage, you are by default
the number one Warriors supporter on the show, Taylor.
What an honour.
I mean, I'd marry all of them if I could.
You have lines, bro.
I would marry all of them.
The reserves?
Would you marry the reserves?
All of them.
There's some good reserves.
The under-19s?
Oh, an under-19 gets a bit weird.
That's how I got in.
It gets a bit weird.
I'm a grown man.
Don't want to go Philip Schofield on it, mate.
Okay, so, Taylor, you're married to Marcelo Montoya.
Yes.
He's done wonderful since he's been at the club, hasn't he?
Yeah.
He's played fantastically.
Yeah.
Now, you've spent time in Australia when they were stationed over there.
What was that like?
Because obviously the Warriors.
Yeah, it would have been really hard.
It was really hard, especially because it was kind of living by month to month,
especially with all the COVID stuff.
It was never like, okay, you're going to be here for nine months.
We never got that much security.
It was kind of like every four weeks looking at how COVID was doing over here.
And in Oz, it was kind of like, oh, still locked down another four weeks.
Still locked down another four weeks.
That'd be frustrating not having a finish line.
Yeah.
Yep.
So how isolated were you like through that whole time?
So the first year when they first moved over, we were based in Terrigal,
which to put it into perspective, it's kind of like an hour and a half away from Sydney,
so kind of like a Hamilton vibe, I guess.
So not a major city.
It's kind of in its own little bubble.
And it was all the players living with each other,
so we roomed with two other players, which was fun.
You're choking up on something.
This is the burner phone, mate.
Emotional story.
It really sounds like i'm crying it does
it's good we need some tears on the burner phone yeah um and then that lasted for two seasons and
then you really are choking up and then we went to it's gone it's done now you've done it yeah
and then we went to gold coast which was amazing um and then brisbane had you been to new zealand
before that and um you know had you been to New Zealand before that?
And, you know, had you been living here and then had to go across there with some of the other lads or not?
So we were lucky in the case that Marcel was playing with the Bulldogs and then signed with the Warriors.
And we were like, awesome, we'll sell everything because they're moving to New Zealand.
And then COVID hit.
So we never made the move, but we were prepared to.
And there were a couple of Aussies in the team that had never been to Auckland,
never played at Mount Smart, but had played for the Warriors for almost a year.
Yeah, wild.
Yeah.
Wild.
And I had never been to New Zealand except for Dunedin,
because Marcelo debuted in Dunedin when he played for the Bulldogs
against the Warriors.
That's an interesting choice.
You were one and done in New Zealand.
You went to Dunners.
Yeah.
So when you knew that maybe he was potentially coming here,
did you get to come over and check it out or anything?
No.
Nothing?
Just like, oh, sign for the Warriors?
He literally had a meeting with the coach over Zoom.
I think it was Nathan Brown at the time.
Yeah, over Zoom on a Friday and then signed the contract by Sunday.
Wow.
Is it awkward when a player signs with a new club,
but they're still with the old club?
I think so, yeah.
Yeah, I can imagine that would be awkward.
It would be like when we signed for coming over here,
and we still had to work across the road for a couple of months,
and then they're trialling new people,
which you're absolutely fine with.
It's part of the process.
But we were sort of sitting out in reception.
Yeah.
We would do an hour of radio in the afternoon and
then you know trial people for the remaining part of the show so they're like oh we're really sorry
we just need you to do an hour a day and we're like okay yeah it's fine it's fine to be honest
but yeah you're right it was kind of a weird time because you're not really part of it you're not
going forward there's no conversations you're having because they're like well and i then I'll tell you guys what we're doing, which is fair enough.
And in league, it's kind of similar, I guess,
because some players do get dropped to the lower level
so they give the up-and-coming players who's taking that position
kind of a time to shine and see how they do with it and stuff.
So, yeah.
And I think we asked you this on the radio.
Do you get worried when he's playing?
Every game, are you on the edge of your seat?
Yeah.
I hate it.
Like the off-season is so good because I just get to relax
and enjoy my weekends.
The worst is when I'm at home watching it and they're overseas
in Oz playing because if something does happen,
you can't just kind of run.
Yeah, I can imagine that.
So let's say that something happens, he gets injured,
and what do you do then?
Do you have to wait until he contacts you or can you text someone
at the ground or what?
They don't have their phones in the dressing rooms.
It's a strict no phone policy.
It's like a stag dude.
Yeah.
So I would just keep ringing everyone I know,
I guess like the doctor.
I've got her phone number.
Yeah, right.
So I'd just keep ringing her.
But then I'd also, when he was playing at Bulldogs,
he did, what did he do?
He did his knee and I didn't like know until like half an hour later
because I was driving him to the hospital.
Why?
Yeah, it was kind of like someone had to come get me in the stands
and go grab him.
Yeah.
You said you walk onto the field at the end of the game
and it's always awkward.
It's so awkward.
Yeah.
Yeah, because we don't have kids.
So if you've got kids, it's great because how amazing,
like your kids get to run on the film.
All the kids.
Yeah, they get to run away.
Me, it's just like I'm carrying my jacket and I'll just be like to him,
I was like, hey.
And he's like, hey.
Anyways, I'm going to go walk around the stadium.
You chill here.
And I'm like, I just sit and he's like.
He should hold you like a baby.
Just on his waist, you know.
When he's being interviewed by the.
Thank you.
We'll try that
Yeah, maybe that's a less awkward thing
Check it up and down like they do to the kids
Yeah
Listen, we're going to bombard you with questions
You know this
Yeah
And are you enjoying your time in New Zealand?
Yes, yeah, we love it
It's nice to have a bit of more independence away from the family
Yeah, right
Yeah, because we lived
So where we lived
In Australia
Sydney
Cronulla
To narrow it down
Was across the road
From my brother
And his wife
And they've just had a kid
So I can imagine
I would have been
Hands on deck
With the new baby
Yeah
Not ready for that
Yeah no not ready
You're over here mate
You're having to baby us now
Yeah
I look like a big baby
That's what Ben always says
So
It's the closest thing
you'll have to babies
in New Zealand.
Great.
Thanks for that, Taylor.
