Starting point is 00:00:00 The Hits with Jono and Ben's Burner Phone. Welcome along to the Burner Phone, the fifth episode. Jeez, we've got through a week's worth, Ben. That's unlike us to commit to something for so long. It's been a lot of fun. So if you're first time listening to this, we bought a Burner Phone. We bought a phone from the gas station. If you'd like to get the Burner Phone number, we must say text Burner Phone to 4487.
Starting point is 00:00:22 It'll bounce back the exact 022 radira number yeah we need to learn it but we don't need to because you can just text burner to 4487 you'll get a bounce back um and then we get to clear it we get to get your message whatever you want to say you can ask us a question you can do whatever it's been pretty random but it's been quite fun clearing the messages so let's clear another one received at 12 32 12.32pm. Hey, mate, James here. Just wondering if you've learned how to clean the money yet, mate. The bank's wondering, you know, what's going to happen. So, yeah, I wonder if you can get them off my back, mate.
Starting point is 00:00:54 You know what I mean? Let me know. So, the money laundering call. I hope this one wouldn't make its way to the podcast. It sounded like a misdialed number, didn't it? It sounded like he was trying to call someone else in the underworld to clear money, to clean money. Have you ever laundered money?
Starting point is 00:01:11 No. Hidden money from anyone, from anyone. Do you hide money from your family? No, I don't. I'm not a really big cash person. I do remember the one time I had a lot of money. I basically put a $5 bet on. This was a few years ago at the TAB,
Starting point is 00:01:29 and there was two games on that day. There was the All Blacks were playing and the Kiwis were playing. It was back-to-back overseas, and 500 to 1 odds was on both games being a draw. Both games had to end in a draw, and I was like, I'll put $5, and I hardly even do sports betting or anything. Yeah, whatever. No, I hardly did. I put five bucks and I hardly even do like sports betting or anything but yeah whatever yeah no I hardly did I put five bucks on watch the first game was the draw and I'm like oh wonder wonder if it'll be a second draw I was like the chance is very slim obviously 500 to one odds second game draw what for five bucks I got two and a half grand two and a half it's
Starting point is 00:02:01 just like that was after that I'm like I'm never gonna be able to beat this before but then at the same time you're going if only i put 20 bucks on it but you know that's the thing once you have a win where you're uh you know the pokies or the gambling or you always like i should have put more on but i had but i went in and got the money i had to get the money out from somewhere and then take it i think i might have got and take it to my bank and then i had to walk through some busy streets with two and,500 cash, which was a lot of money. And I was so worried about having even that amount of money in my pocket. Everyone you look at, you're like, are they going to mug me? Are they going to, do they know I've got $2,500 in my pocket?
Starting point is 00:02:36 Well, you're a paranoid man at the best of times, let alone wandering around the streets with thousands of dollars. So that was the closest I've had to money laundering, just feeling like I was, oh God, I've got to take it to my bank to put it into my bank account so I didn't have $2,500 just sitting in my pocket. So that was very, that was. Did that give you the bug for gambling where you're like, oh, geez, I could tap into the kid's savings here
Starting point is 00:02:54 and that sort of stuff? No, if anything, it's made me go, that was probably my. Your height. That was my height. That was a $5 bet that turned into two and a half grand. If anything, I just buttoned off and gone, oh, that was nice. That was nice.
Starting point is 00:03:06 My friend of mine, we went to the casino on a Friday night. Yeah. And he won the, they give away a car. You know, if you gamble away, you might win the car. He won the car. He won the car on a Friday night. Just perfect conditions. Not great conditions to drive the car back home.
Starting point is 00:03:23 No, shocking conditions. But then they say, oh, would you like the car, or would you like money to the value of the car? Oh, that's nice. And he's like, I'll take option B, thank you. Yeah. And boy, oh, boy. Oh, did he get it on the night?
Starting point is 00:03:35 On the night, yeah. Even if he didn't get it on the night, he knows he's got that money coming. Yeah, it was hotel rooms. It was just. It was a hangover Auckland, wasn't it? I'm still recovering from that night 12 years ago. Woke up with Mike Tyson's tiger.
Starting point is 00:03:49 It was a heck of a time. That is so. But that's interesting. When you're in the car, they go, oh, hey, would you like the cash to the value of? I've always thought that was a, but they must do that all the time with car competition. Even Lotto might do that, wouldn't they? When they give away, you know, here's 59 Fords for Father's Day and that sort of thing. Maybe they do.
Starting point is 00:04:05 I remember listening to Oprah on a podcast, you know, her one famous, you know, not her one famous thing, but one of her biggest things she did was she gave everyone a car. You get a car, you get a car. Everyone in the audience. It was huge. The whole audience all got a new car. They went nuts.
Starting point is 00:04:21 But her saying on this podcast afterwards was actually behind the scenes. It was a shambles because in Americaica yeah i think you get taxed on everything even even winnings and stuff so all these people got taxed on it and there were a lot of people were like well we can't even afford the tax to get the new car we just can you give us the money they're like well no we're giving you the car but we're like well we don't want the car because we're now we're going to pay all this tax to actually get the car. And so it was all this logistical thing. They didn't want the bad word getting out. They go, Oprah promises a car.
Starting point is 00:04:49 So yeah, I can't remember exactly how it ended. Oprah's like, I just gave 112 people cars. What more do you want me to do? You paid the tax. Just pay the tax so you get this car and it's worth more than the tax. Did they end up paying the tax for the winners? I can't remember.
Starting point is 00:05:02 Maybe they did just to try and make. I'll have a Google. Yeah, do that. Did Oprah pay the tax for the cars she gave away? That drives my wife insane when I type and talk. Yeah, do it. Type and talk. However, she didn't pay a cent of the cost for the car.
Starting point is 00:05:22 South of Pontiac donated every single car. However, Oprah did pay for the registration and outright taxes on the cars. Oh, well, there you go. She did come to the party. So, they hadn't obviously intended to come to the party. Denise in the promo department
Starting point is 00:05:39 in the office didn't think about the taxes. Oh, God, everyone cars. Everyone cars. Why everyone? This is going to be a great, and it was a great moment. It just, behind the scenes, Oh, God, everyone cars. Everyone cars. Yeah. Everyone cars. Why everyone? This is going to be a great, and it was a great moment. It just, behind the scenes, it was a shambles. Much like this show, behind the scenes of shambles. Do you remember that show, Pimp My Ride, with the rapper Exhibit? Yes. X to the Z.
Starting point is 00:05:56 He would come over and he'd be like, yo, turn your Corolla into a mobile fish tank. Yeah. And the sharks were swimming around. Just ridiculous stuff. Sw swimming around in the boot. I don't think you'd pass your WAF after getting that, right? No, it wasn't. Oh, I've turned the back seat into a disco floor. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:14 I just want to get to exhibit. Thank you, but I just need to get from A to B, mate. Anyway, you do all these crazy things to these cars. And the problem was they were so, they were on television, obviously, in the area they lived in, and people would just come and steal their cars. Like, oh, you took my rollercoaster car.
