The Hits with Jon is you just text Burner
to 4487 and you'll get a phone number back.
Remember the old days when you had to get a phone number out?
And you didn't have a pen or a paper?
You just had to remember it.
You just had to repeat Ben's landline number
over and over again. 06378.
Yeah, you take a little address book
around or something, a little contact book.
What it did provide though is a generation
of people who could remember numbers.
Yeah, you're right.
Numbers like my old landline, 021
521 9055. I know that's my friend
Mark's, his old landline.
021 575. Oh no, 021.
Why am I saying 021?
It's so not, yeah.
I can remember my friend's landline.
521 9056. Right.
Yeah, I call that all the time.
He's back home.
Hi, Mrs. Gable, he's back home.
I know, you have to go through the parents normally.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Oh, I'll just go find them, we'll put them on.
If you had two phones in the house, I'll get it from the other room.
Sometimes you would encounter a disgruntled sibling would answer the phone.
Yeah.
Oh, hi, is Mark home? Yeah. And then they would would answer the phone. Yeah. Oh, hi, it's Marco.
Yeah.
And then they would pick up the phone halfway through the conversation
because they wanted to talk to someone else.
Yeah.
Get off the phone.
My sister would pick it up and try and listen to the conversation I was having.
I would be like, get off the phone.
I'm talking.
Probably just nothing.
It was important that I was talking about, but you know.
And then they're like, I've hung up.
Then they pretended to hang up, but you knew they were still there.
And they had their hand over the mouthpiece.
So they could listen along.
And did you get the old extension cord cable
where you could walk your phone around?
Yes, yeah.
And then the game changer, which is the cordless.
That did change the game.
So there we go.
There's some outdated telco banter there for you.
And let's get into today's message for the Burner phone.
What have we got?
G'day, Ben.
Oh, sorry.
I'm stoned as.
Sorry.
420, because it's a long weekend.
Four days off.
My question, though, is...
Oh, yes.
Do you guys ever sit down and constantly...
Do you ever sit down and think,
well, why are we doing this?
What's life about sometimes?
The hard questions that were hard to answer You know like
I'm just going to
I've got to go
Do you ever ask
Why are we doing this
And when
If he's talking about
The burner phone
And I hear messages like that
I'm like yes
I do question
Why are we doing this
But that was
That was great
That was one of my
Favourite messages ever
And you couldn't get
You couldn't summarise
A smoker up In one voicemail even better.
What was I going to ask you again?
And a very deep question.
Yeah.
A very deep question.
I feel like you could talk for hours in that state particularly about, you know.
The meaning of life.
Do you ever think what we're all put on this earth for?
I do sometimes think, though, is there something that you should be doing
that you have neglected?
Yeah.
That's often a thing.
Are you fulfilling your purpose?
Because we're all here for,
I believe we're all here for a reason,
to use whatever skills, ability, or talent
that you may have,
whether you and me,
clearly we're not in the right.
Yeah, you look at, like,
I think people that are doing amazing things
in New Zealand.
I mean, off the top of my head, someone like Sir John Keown.
David Letelli.
David Letelli.
Mike King.
The Briscoe's Lady.
Yeah, all successful people.
Yeah, I mean, the Briscoe's Lady is great, but I was going to say,
she's been the Briscoe's Lady.
But let's say she's great and they're out of the conversation just for a second.
She's amazing.
Don't get me wrong.
Tina from Turner's.
People that have been successful in one thing,
hugely successful in one thing,
like Mike King was one of the top comedians
of the game on telly and stuff.
John Kill in a great all black,
David Letalli, a boxer as well.
And then have made this whole other amazing career as well,
which is really fulfilling for them as well
and for the country.
Helping others.
Helping others others which i think
is awesome you know like and you sort of go well sometimes you know how did they know or did that
just happen you know that they went from being these amazing things in one thing and then going
well now i'm this amazing thing somewhere else that's pretty impressive that is impressive yeah
but uh you know like you know if they had just carried on doing like my king could still be
you know he's still hilariously funny.
Like, he could still be doing stand-up.
He could be still on TV.
He could still be doing, you know.
But he's chosen now to do that and for the good of the country.
Okay, if you've met someone who's never been here before,
they land on Earth and they're like, what's this whole game about, mate?
And you had to tell them, okay, the goal of life is to do this.
This is the game that you need to play.
What is it?
Oh, jeez. Is it have a family? Start a family? No, I don't life is to do this. This is the game that you need to play. What is it? Oh, jeez.
Is it have a family?
Start a family?
No, I don't think that's, no.
No, that's not the goal of life?
I think the goal of life is to start a family.
Does it get a job?
Well, yeah, it does feel like you need to, yeah,
you do need a job at some stage.
So I need to go find myself a job, do I?
Yeah, I heard a good thing on a podcast the other day
where people, Stephen A. Smith, he's a ESPN commentator.
He's great.
He's so passionate.
If you know Stephen A. Smith, he's just, he gets, he said, you know, people work for, you either work as you got, you either got a job or you've got a career in his minds.
You know, you've got a job.
And he said, either one, if you're happy with either one, that's fine.
That's great.
But some people got a job.
They go to work each day.
They do their job.
They pay, they do it to pay their bills, to support their family. fine that's great but some people got a job they go to work each day they do their job they pay they do it to pay their bills to surprise their family and that's great but he
said but other people want a career and they have their job as part of that career and they're on
that career path and you can you know he's like you know and he encourages his kids to not just
get a job but get a career yeah that's quite a quite a cool way of looking at it but he said
equally you know if you're if you're happy with the job and that fills up your cup
and you've got other stuff outside of your work,
then that's great too.
That's what I was about to say.
Maybe
the meaning of life, the whole reason
that we're here is to do what makes you
happy.
Whether that's...
It might not be your career.
You might love the ocean ocean you might love the golf
course yeah you're right but i'm folding washing like i do it at night you know like that is fun
maybe that's the meaning of life to get to the bottom of the giant mound of washing tell me
about it so you may be the meaning of life if you say someone who's just landed here boom naked
they're butt naked and they're like what do i have to do here what's what's the landed here, boom, naked, their butt naked. And they're like, what do I have to do here?
What's the goal here?
We would say, make yourself happy.
Yeah.
Be happy.
Be happy.
But in doing so, there's probably some things you have to do along the way.
Firstly, put on clothes.
Yeah, true.
If you're naked, I mean, if being nude makes you happy,
then we have three places you can go for that.
We can send you.
You can't just sit there on the street.
We can send you there.
If you need to wander by things as well, you need some money, so that requires a job.
So those things, you know, there's some other things.
You can't just go around going.
I want to be happy.
Yeah.
But you're right.
There's things that you need to do to make yourself happy.
But you're right.
But that's to find that thing that makes you happy.
And probably we'll go get you some clothes now, shall we?
Yeah, that'd be nice.
