The Hits with Jono and Ben's Burnaphone Dites. Dites, as he's known to his friends and family. He's like, don't call me any of those names. Just call him Tom.
Tom.
Lovely guy. Welcome to the Burner Phone Podcast.
Thanks for having me.
Usually, we're going to need a little bit more excitement, Tom.
Thanks for having me, boys.
See, that's good.
Got a little forced the second time, though, didn't it?
So, yeah, normally we clear a message, but today we're not going to even go.
We're not even going to touch the Burner Phone because you just told us something.
And we want to delve into that today on the Burn of fun because we feel like that'd be interesting yeah so you
worked you spent a period of your life in canada yep i saw i lived in montreal yeah is it montreal
a nice city yeah it's a beautiful city rent is very cheap uh wages aren't great but everything
else is it's a real cheap place to live so and it's very beautiful. So it's a lot better than where you currently are. Yep. Yeah.
And you're working for a company, and just what you said about where that company was located, that's what sparked our interest.
Yep.
So I worked in an area called Plum on Don, end of the blue line.
And we shared an office with MindGeek, which is the parent company for Pornhub.
Interesting.
So you're going to work every day.
Are there adult actors walking in and out of the building?
Who are these people that are running a website like Pornhub?
Well, I worked at a different video production company.
Were you into adult film as well?
Yeah, I'm actually the star.
You may have seen me.
That's right. Under the name Tommy D Tommy Big
Tommy Big D, yeah
Tommy Little D
So what is it like?
What is it like? Because you see
On the internet, but I imagine the reality
Of running a business like that would be
Very bleak It would be a business like that would be very bleak it'd be
a business but like any other business in a lot of ways wouldn't it i think it was so it was quite
a contrast i worked at a company that was exclusively managed by orthodox jews right um
so it was quite strange to have deeply religious people in the same space as uh deeply oh yeah
right people well not horny people in the building, but people that were, you know, putting stuff out for that audience.
Yeah, it was just a contrast.
We had a rabbi come around every couple of days into the office.
Was it just to cleanse you all of the filth that you were working with?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Potentially so.
But it was, yeah, it was a contrast.
So a lot of men in white suits
and then a lot of very unhappy looking people.
So I think a large part of who
was working there were the people who were there to kind of go check all the videos to say is that
can this be on our site can't this be on our site check for anything illegal so a lot of uh very
sunken in eyes oh so they just sit there watching it all day all day that would be such an unusual
job you know you become almost desensitized you would
be to think you'd be like oh yeah that's you know it's just it's a business you know but i think
that probably moves over into other areas of your life i think if you're watching that all day oh
it might sort of mess with you a little bit potentially so there were a couple people
at my work who had jumped ship from mind geek uh the deeply religious yeah and had no no they'd
come there editors yeah it'd come to our company after that and they uh their experience was was
pretty bad I like to think well I think I'm just thinking about that now but at the business you
know like if you went to one of those sites here at work they'd be like, but maybe it's the opposite at the Pornhub.
They wouldn't have a firewall.
There'd be no firewall.
Then why are you on the New Zealand Herald site, mate?
You should be, you'd be the opposite.
You'd be wasting your time on sites that weren't salacious.
Yeah, I guess I never found out.
The thing about the people that work there
is they weren't very chatty.
No, they were just like, end me now, I imagine.
And obviously, being exposed to that content all the time
messes with your head, I imagine.
Yeah, I mean, Jono, you tell us.
It explains a lot, doesn't it?
It does, it really does.
So you'd think that that would be a fun job.
Oh, look at this, Larry's working at this place
and he watches all this content all the time, but
I don't know if that dream
would be a reality. It's
not my dream. No, not
your dream. And so the... Is your dream to be
on this Burn a Phone podcast?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
This way we get to spend even more time together.
You started with a lot of enthusiasm. Now
where's the enthusiasm levels for it now?
It's through the roof, boys.
It's going to be Jono, Ben and Tom soon.
He might not sound enthusiastic, but he is.
I can see his face.
He's got an enthusiastic face.
Full of smiles.
What's, because you spend a lot of time filming stuff,
what's the weirdest thing you've filmed?
We've filmed a few unusual things together, haven't we?
As a camera operator,
what's the weirdest thing you've actually captured with your camera?
I was an editor exclusively before I started working with you guys.
So it would be with you.
Do we want to delve into that?
Yeah.
What's the strangest thing you've had to edit?
The strangest thing I've had to edit?
This is quite bleak, but living in montreal during covid times
yeah uh i had to edit a memorial to about to a nursing home where like half the patients had
died and they were doing a graduation for those that had survived where they were getting a little
plaque being like congrats you've survived one year hello guys so they got they got a little
package that normal video package like a little uh certificate like if you do a diploma you know
you go up on stage and you shake someone's hand so i think the state senator of uh of that area
came to the nursing home and he handed everyone a rose and a little
uh placard that said basically like congratulations you haven't died well done on existing yeah and
they're like can we not can we go home now we went to a retirement village once and we filmed
something quirky i think we're doing it was maybe we bought a rock band there we did we bought Villainy yeah which is yeah the really loud rock band we took
to a retirement village was part of the thing putting bands in unusual you know locations that
wouldn't really match up and we were like this we went into thinking that maybe the people there
wouldn't appreciate this and they loved it they loved it they're like stick around why are you
guys leaving this is fun please don't leave us that's literally what a lady she held my arm the sweet lady please don't leave
and we're like oh that's so it's the highlight of their day it was like it was awesome it was
not and you're like oh yeah they loved it they did as long as it wasn't a super spreader event
i don't know if they got a plaque the next year.
Hey Tom, thank you for coming in and sharing your personal story, regaling
tales of overseas.
We appreciate it.
